Local communities to receive resort municipality funding Submitted

The government of British Columbia is investing over $10 million in 14 resortoriented municipalities throughout British Co-

lumbia this year to support and promote local tourism economies. “Our government recognizes how important a role resort municipalities play in the economic prosperity of our

province. This initiative provides local governments with the financial certainty to facilitate a great visitor experience and ensure visitors will return,” said Minister of Jobs, Tourism,

and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour Pat Bell. Since 2007, the Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) has invested $61.7 million to support the unique challenges

and opportunities faced by smaller resort-oriented municipalities. Communities will use this funding to enhance services and infrastructure crucial to growing the tourism sector

that drives their local economies, including trail and boardwalk improvements, venue development and tourist information services. Without this funding, resort communities

would not have the means to provide key community assets to advance their primary industry - tourism. “Families, and the communities they live in, are at the heart of the economic and social health of our province. Working with local governments, this initiative provides the tools and support needed to strengthen communities and help make them vibrant, sustainable and economically resilient,” said Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Bill Bennett. The 14 municipalities that participate in the RMI program are Fernie, Golden, Harrison Hot Springs, Invermere, Kimberley, Osoyoos, Radium Hot Springs, Revelstoke, Rossland, Sun Peaks, Tofino, Ucluelet, Valemount and Whistler. Invermere will receive $186,410, with Radium Hot Springs receiving $115,532. Kimberley will get $87,876. All of the funding will go towards supporting tourism infrastructure and programming. Tourism is one of the key economic sectors identified in Canada Starts Here: The BC Jobs Plan. The Province’s new Tourism Strategy builds on the Jobs Plan, providing a framework for government and industry to work together to attract more visitors and create jobs for British Columbians. The strategy focuses on increasing the number of visitors by building on the global awareness generated by the 2010 Winter Games and international marketing campaigns. Since 2007, over $61.7 million dollars has been invested in tourism infrastructure and programs to support local and regional tourism economies. Budget 2012-13 continued commitment to funding for resort municipalities and maintains the same level as the previous year. In 2010, the tourism sector employed 127,000 British Columbians, generated over $13.4 billion in revenue for tourism-related businesses and contributed over $1.2 billion to provincial government revenues. Total tourism wages and salaries were $4.4 billion in 2010, an increase of 37 per cent since 2000.

(From left) Jeannie Kambeitz (RN) joins Chris Thom (Rocky Mountain Diesel) and AJ Brekke (Manager Critical Care) to discuss the major benefits of adding crash carts to the Emergency and ICU units at EKRH.

Crashed Cars for Crash Carts The holiday spirit continues for Cranbrook’s Rocky Mountain Diesel & Autobody Ltd. who is continuing their annual holiday tradition by making a significant gift to East Kootenay Foundation for Health for its Starlite Campaign. “When the foundation told us that they were thanking the region by lighting all the stars at once this year, it didn’t change our mind about supporting health care. After working with Donna we came up with a creative fundraiser called Crashed Cars for Crash Carts which highlights our body shop and the emergency and intensive care units at the hospital,” shares a smiling Chris Thom, Owner of RMD. In honour of its customers and staff RMD is going to purchase two trauma crash carts ($10,000) for the emergency department and Intensive Care Unit for the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. A crash cart is a wheeled cabinet for storing lifesaving equipment which contains all of the equipment necessary for emergency resuscitation, from latex gloves to a defibrillator. Crash carts are conveniently positioned throughout hospitals and some other medical facilities so that they can be quickly accessed in an emergency. The Thom family started their tradition of sharing thanks at the same time the EKFH launched its Starlite Campaign for Excellence in Health Care. Over the past five years, Rocky Mountain Diesel has contributed over $56,500 in funding through the campaign. Their support has been focused on seniors’ facilities in the East Kootenay, support of last year’s digital mammography campaign and now key equipment for the emergency and trauma care areas of the

hospital. The 2012 theme of the Starlite Campaign is you OUR Stars. Thank you Rocky Mountain Diesel for shining your star

to the benefit of others living in the East Kootenay. To make your own Starlite gift visit us at www.ekfh.ca.

On Monday, December 17, Kimberley City Council endorsed a contract with Tourism Kimberley to manage the Kimberley Visitor Centre, on the corner of Ross St. and Kimberley Avenue. The Visitor Centre exists to provide visitors information on activities and attractions in

Kimberley. Sometime in 2013, management of the Visitor Centre will transition from the Kimberley and District Chamber of Commerce to Tourism Kimberley. According to Tourism Kimberley President Craig Campbell “The Visitor Centre is a perfect platform to sell the community to visitors.

We are excited about the opportunity to learn more about visitors coming here and enhance the tourism products in Kimberley accordingly.” Tourism Kimberley is the non-profit destination marketing organization for Kimberley. It has been promoting Kimberley since 2007 through a partnership funding model. The Kimberley and District Chamber of Commerce has man-

aged the Visitor Centre since its days in the old railway station. The voice of business and a key player in fostering a healthy economic environment, the Chamber will continue to focus on serving the needs of local businesses. Member services will be enhanced with the goal of promoting and improving business retention and development. The Chamber will move to a new location that will be announced early 2013.

network in our communities, it was decided to circulate a donation appeal flyer in the Townsman rather than mail out appeals to our previous listed donors. Unfortunately this was not as successful as we had hoped; therefore we are appealing to our communities to please not forget that your United Way donation is still needed, even though you have not been personally asked. The goal of United Way is to have every resident recognize the value of supporting an organization that invests dollars raised in our community to a wide spectrum of community programs; from prenatal and infant programs, such as the Bellies to Babies, through important learning and formative years programming; with Success by Six, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club, the P.A.R.T.Y. Program, Community Living, and Restorative Justice, to community support programs for Seniors and Hospice services. These agencies and others, ensure that our communities continue to be healthy, strong and supportive to everyone’s benefit. Do you believe in your community? Do you believe that its success depends on the people who live in it? That everyone has something to contribute? That everyone deserves respect? That everyone’s potential can be realized? We do at United Way and hope that you do as well by showing your support with your taxable donation. Big or small all donations are important in our community mission. On behalf of our Board of Directors Merry Christmas and wishes to all for a happy and prosperous 2013. Sincerely, Donna Brady Fields Executive Director

One of the Family Pet Care 1996 Inc. has

donated 18 Pet Rescue Kits complete with oxygen masks to fire departments across the East Kootenay and one in Castlegar. The Rescue Kits can be easily carried on the fire trucks and provide firefighters with the ability to provide oxygen to pets ranging from guinea

pigs and birds to cats and dogs. The Marasco Family was inspired to donate the kits after seeing a story in Ontario and was assisted by members of the Cranbrook Fire Department to coordinate getting the kits to the East Kootenay region.

The Club services members in the Cranbrook and surrounding area, with a membership of 40. The Club promotes its interest through functions and activities some which include: garage tours, cruises, barbeques, participating and supporting other club’s activities in the area along with Friday night dinners and socials. With all this activity they also maintain a focus on fundraising for charitable causes. The visit to East Kootenay Foundation for Health included a Starlite gift of $500 to be

dedicated to the area of breast health. While on site, the members also presented an additional $500 gift to the Cranbrook Prostate Support Group. Both donations honour the Club’s make-up of men and women.

Donna Grainger, EKFH Executive Director shares, “What an absolute honour to receive a gift from the Rockin in the Rockies Car Club and to share in the celebration of making a difference in the journey of someone who

will receive a breast or prostate cancer diagnosis. The Club and its members should be so proud of this gift.” The holiday spirit

Recycling Tips That’s a Wrap

Paper based wrapping paper can be recycled in any of the yellow bins in the East Kootenay and in the curbside recycling programs in Fernie and Invermere. From cards and envelopes to wrapping and tissue paper, please recycle as much as possible.

Recyclable: ü Paper based gift wrap ü Cards ü Envelopes ü Gift tags ü Tissue paper ü Cardboard boxes ü Brown shipping/packaging paper

Not Recyclable û Foil based wrapping paper û Envelopes or gift tags with foil lining û Bows and Ribbons

If everyone in Canada wrapped just three gifts in reused paper or gift bags, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 hockey rinks.

To find the holiday hours at RDEK transfer stations and landfills, visit

www.rdek.bc.ca

Recycling 101 The yellow bins in the RDEK and curbside programs in Fernie and Invermere take the following: ü Mixed paper – including Christmas cards and envelopes (as long as they’re not foil) ü Aluminum and tin cans – please rinse well! No aluminum foil, pie plates, etc. Only cans are accepted ü Cardboard – all types; boxes must be flattened. Cardboard covered with wax, foil or soiled with grease or food waste cannot be recycled Plastics – Grocery bags (garbage must be removed from grocery bags) ü and plastics #1 - #6 (except Styrofoam)

Plastics NOT accepted:

û Styrofoam (even though it's marked as a #6) û Unmarked plastics – if it doesn’t have a number on it, it can’t go in the bin. Often the lids are made out of different plastics than the containers, so you have to check carefully û #7 plastics

What You Need to Know About Glass

No Styrofoam

Styrofoam is NOT recyclable in the East Kootenay, even though it is a type of #6. If it can't be reused, it's garbage.

Foiled Again

Please Keep it Clean Our yellow recycling bins are often on private property and it is so important that we keep them clean. Please put all recyclables in the bin. Over the holidays, the bins see a huge increase in volume. While our contactor will be working hard to empty the bins more frequently, sometimes they will be full. If you encounter a full bin, please look for another bin in the area or come back. Never leave recyclables on or around the bins. Thank you for helping us keep our recycling areas clean!

These containers must be well rinsed with lids removed.

Metal lids cannot be recycled in the yellow bins. Please make sure you remove the lids before putting glass containers in the recycling bin. Metal lids can be recycled for free at Columbia Recycle in Marysville.

Both alkaline and rechargeable batteries are recyclable. Drop off locations include:

The following items can be dropped off FREE OF CHARGE for recycling: üComputers – desktop and laptops üMonitors üKeyboards and Computer üMice üPrinters üTelevisions üFax Machines üScanners üDVD and VHS players üStereos and MP3 docking stations üRadios üDiscman, Walkman, MP3 players üEarphones üMicrophones üSpeakers üCable, satellite and PVR boxes üVehicle audio and video systems

On December 25th alone, over 30 million bags of garbage will be thrown out of Canadian households.

Batteries Included

Electronics recycling depots are located at the Cranbrook, Invermere and Fernie Bottle Depots. These depots are for small volumes only.

Products are divided into categories including: kitchen countertop, time measurement, weight measurement, garment care, air treatment, floor care and personal care.

That means only container glass that holds food and beverages. Some examples include: ü Jam jars ü Pickle jars ü Cheez whiz jars ü Olive oil jars ü Iced tea or wine bottles

Electronics are often a hot holiday gift item. Old electronics that are still in good working condition can be taken to an RDEK Reuse Centre; however, if they’re no longer working, they may be able to be recycled.

The Cranbrook and Fernie Depots (not Invermere) also accept more than 120 small electrical appliances, ranging in size from electric toothbrushes to countertop microwave ovens.

The glass recycling bins in the East Kootenay are for container glass ONLY.

The following are NOT accepted in the glass bins: û Dishes of any kind (clear drinking glasses, pyrex dishes, corel ware, pottery, plates, etc). No dishes! û Shower doors, windshields û Lightbulbs û Picture frame glass û Glass trinkets (like candlestick holders and tree decorations)

Reuse Comes Before Recycle Over the holidays many people will receive gifts that will replace perfectly good older items. Instead of throwing good items away, please consider giving them away so they can be reused. There are Reuse Centres at the Cranbrook, Kimberley, Elkford, Fernie and Sparwood Transfer Stations and Columbia Valley Landfill. The Reuse Centres accept household items in good working condition. Everything in the Reuse Centres is available at no cost. Some examples of items that are accepted in the Reuse Centres include: ü Chairs ü Pictures ü Televisions ü Small dishes Light fixtures ü ü Tools Items that cannot be accepted include large appliances, tires, mattresses, automotive parts, scrap metal, wood and clothing.

It’s believed that Boxing Day began as a day when gifts were given to servants and charitable donations made to the poor. Widely celebrated in Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Boxing Day is a great opportunity to do some good no matter where you live. Perhaps you could donate books or board games to a local community center, or volunteer your time at a nearby food bank. You could also spend the day catching up with friends and family, or visit a nursing home to spend time with those who might otherwise be alone. Or, maybe you’d like to surprise somebody with a day-afterChristmas gift. No matter how you celebrate, these area businesses wish you a Boxing Day full of joy.

The rustle of a leaf today The wind that blows the snow astray The drops of rain upon my face The loving thought of your embrace. I see your face, your precious smile The sparkle in your eyes, no guile You watch us intently from above Waiting to hug us and express your love. For you today we cannot see But still you wait indeÀnitely You see from above and not from below A different perspective, a radiant glow. For all is forgiven the future is good If only we knew and changed what we could It’s not only God who sees us this way But Matthew now watches and longs to say. I still love Christmas and wish I was there To laugh with you, cheer you, and say that I care Remember I love you more than you know Feel the bree]e of heaven, it is there that I Áow.
