Splatsin First Nation takes a stand richard rolke Morning Star Staff

First Nations are challenging federal government policies. Members of the Splatsin First Nation rallied in Enderby Thursday to protest Ottawa’s financial transparency act and environmental assessment legislation. “There’s a $10 billion operation (Department of Indian Affairs) and all it does is puts us down. It doesn’t do anything for us,” said Chief Wayne Christian. In terms of Bill C-45, there are concerns that it reverses laws that protect the environment. “It infringes on our rights and terms of consultation,” said Christian. “It changes environmental protection assessment and impacts our traditional territories from coast to coast.” The Shuswap Nation Tribal Council, which includes the Splatsin, is calling on the federal government to meet directly to discuss the issues. “Solutions are attainable if Canada is prepared to listen before acting,” said Chief Shane Gottfriedson, with the SNTC. There have been a number of First Nations protests across the country focused on the government, Among them is a hunger strike by Theresa Spence, chief of the Attawapiskat First Nation in Ontario, who is raising awareness about living conditions among aboriginal Canadians. Christian believes Spence is an inspiration for First Nations people. “We want to support her and what she is doing,” he said. “Our rights are human rights in the international community. We can’t live without the land, whether it is fish, wildlife or natural resources.” Colin Mayes, O k a n a g a n - S hu s w ap MP, defends the steps being taken by the fed-

eral government. “I believe our government has taken

action on many fronts including aboriginal housing,” he said.

“We’ve builts 33 new schools on First Nations land. We want to sit down and see how we can better deliver education. “I was at the opening of the Splatsin health centre and they were complimentary of our government.” Mayes insists Ottawa

is not abandoning its environmental responsibility with new legislation. “There are no compromises on environmental protection. It has simply streamlined it so there is a better (application) timeline than there was before,” he said.

Light A Bulb nears goal Morning Star Staff

A Christmas tradition is closing in on its goal. The Light A Bulb campaign has raised $160,859 or 80 per cent of the $200,000 needed to purchase equipment for Vernon Jubilee Hospital. “It is not too late to make a donation for the 2012 tax year,” said Michael Concannon, campaign chairperson. “Donations must be dated and postmarked by Dec. 31.” The funds will go towards endoscopes for the operating rooms and a colposcopy system used for cervical screening in the ambulatory care clinic. A boost has come from Carmen Perreault, a VJH employee. While operating a floorcleaning machine, she has been asking for loonies and toonies for Light A Bulb. “She, like so many Interior Health employees, recognize the importance of this annual campaign for the hospital,” said Concannon. For more information or to donate, call the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation office at 250-558-1362 or go to vjhfoundation.org.

Dear Santa...

anta Claus heads out on his whirlwind journey of the globe in a few hours, bringing gifts to all of the good girls and boys. And the pressure to perform is daunting for the old elf. Besides keeping up with the latest gadgets and the popular toys, some special requests have found their way to the North Pole. “I want the rural roads to be cleared of snow, and sanded in a timely manner.” — Jackie Pearase, rural Enderby director “I would like a healthy hockey team and a long win streak. I am also having a baby in the new year and would like a healthy newborn.” — Jason Williamson, Vernon Vipers head coach “The one thing I would Richard Rolke like Santa to bring is for the entire community to recognize the value of sport and recreation in terms of community health, and that the region be recognized as the healthiest community in Canada.” — Jim McEwan, Funtastic executive director “If I could ask Santa for anything, I would ask he give my wish to someone who truly needs it. I am one of those fortunate people who have more than they need but have the opportunities to see there are many who are not so lucky.” — Owen Dickie, Lake Country councillor “I would wish for three more companies in responsible industries to choose Vernon for their corporate headquarters. Or Wayne Gretzky’s hockey abilities when I was his age. Or Toronto’s Rob Ford to be the mayor of a neighbouring community to make the rest of us look good.” — Rob Sawatzky, Vernon mayor “My wish is for everyone who is just trying to make it through the holidays, those

That individuals and families would be inclusive, inviting others to experience being welcomed, feeling joyful and being a part of making new hopeful Christmas memories, that no one would feel alone and unnoticed.” — Lisa Froom, Upper Room Mission general manager “Dear Santa, the farming families of the North Okanagan know you like to eat so my request is that their year-long desire for (meat processing ) licenses be tucked in their stockings.” — Patrick Nicol, Regional District of North Okanagan chairperson “I want everything that hockey players have and hockey stickers, but no doubles.” — Lucas VanderVelde, four, inspiration for the book Marshall Plays Hockey. “International peace and stability.” — George Abbott, Shuswap MLA “I would ask Santa to help us all do our best to be more accepting of differences and not only tolerant of young and tolerant of older, but an appreciation of diversity in culture and the contributions that all make to the community.” — Gay Jewitt, executive director of the Whitevalley Community Resource Centre in Lumby “If I could ask Santa for one thing this Christmas, it would be that he turn Vernon into Whoville for one day and all of the residents would meet around a very large Christmas tree in the middle of town and sing Dabu Doray.” — Andrew Allen, entertainer No matter what Santa brings you, I wish you peace and joy. A very merry Christmas and all of the best in the new year.

Christmas, at least, according to the media, advertising, and everything else that bombards us with messages, is about spending time with family and being filled with ‘Christmas cheer.’ That’s OK for everyone who has a family that fits into the mould of the perfect family. Happy faces, laughing children, people who love you, and an abundance of cash, that is. But, guess what? Not everyone has a home from a Sears catalogue. Rather than being the happiest time of year, for many people Christmas is an unbearably lonely time. For those who don’t have family to share food and gifts with, being surrounded by images of merriment and perfect families only highlights the fact that they don’t fit the mould. Canadian statistics from helplines have shown that both the number and severity of calls by depressed persons increases every year through November and December, returning to normal volume towards the end of January. But sometimes, all that is needed is someone to notice a person’s existence. If you know anybody who is spending the Christmas holiday alone, stop by with a card, invite them for dinner, or just knock on their door and say Merry Christmas. How good does it make you feel when a stranger smiles at you for no reason other than to show friendliness? Walking down the street, look people in the eye and smile. Make sure those who are feeling like they have nobody, know that other community members care. —Fernie Free Press

n Sept. 13, our apartment was lost in a fire on Heritage Drive. It was one of the most scariest times of my life as my daughter was home at this time. I believe it was Samantha Paulson who banged on our door, alerting my daughter of the fire. I can't thank you enough for that quick thinking which allowed my daughter to escape. It was all very shocking at this time, but I do know that many neighbours came forward and did what they could to help us. You are all amazing and your kindness and support will never be forgotten. I also want to thank the Okanagan Landing Fire Department and Vernon Fire Rescue for saving the rest of the complex and putting the fire out. Also, thank you to the Okanagan Emergency Management team, Red Cross and the Interior Health Authority for their help

Thank you EndErby The Enderby and District Lions Club kindly thanks the many individuals, organizations and businesses that so generously donated to our 22th annual Children's Christmas Auction Nov. 24 at the Paddlewheeler Restaurant in the Enderby Howard Johnson Inn. Your generosity is truly appreciated by our members, and by the recipients for the funds raised. We also would like to thank the patrons that came to buy the goods and services. We proudly announce that this project produced nearly $12,500 that will be largely used for the children of Enderby and district. We are also proud that we had 39 Enderby Lions members participating in the project, contributing more than 250 person-hours and travelling about 500 kilometres. The retail value of the goods offered was just more than $19,000, so auctioneers Noel Tarzwell and Jerry Sepalla were successful in generating a return of nearly 65 per cent of retail value from the 86 bidders and 69 buyers. Thank you to all for a job well done. John Pavelich, auction chairperson ChrisTmas miraClE Our heartfelt appreciation

goes out to everyone involved in sparing us from a major home fire. There are no words that can appropriately express how much we appreciate everyone's efforts. From the anonymous passersby who noticed the fire and their quick actions, the others assembled who helped before the firefighters arrived, and to the quick response of the Coldstream Fire Department, we will never forget everything you did for us. Thank you just doesn't seem adequate to the firefighters who volunteer their precious time to attend to calls. They are an amazing group of individuals who exhibit professionalism, expertise and empathy as they respond to the community's calls for help. Thank you to everyone for giving us our Christmas miracle. September and am well on the way to recovery. I cannot say enough about the way things came together. For those who have gone through major surgery, you know all of the elements which are involved — consults, X-rays, blood work, CTs, pre-ops, ECGs, etc. I owe a debt of gratitude and my sincere thanks to my family MD, Dr. Botha, and my ortho surgeon, Dr. Dooley, and his staff. These men went above and beyond the call of their profession. I spent three days in hospital and they were there to check on me every day. My appreciation also goes out to the caring nurses and staff of Vernon Jubilee Hospital. You are unsung heroes. You gave me my mobility back. Just a footnote, there is always a certain amount of frustration with patients not receiving treatment when they feel they should, as there is with some who unfortunately fall through the cracks, but the system was there in my emergency. brian reilly ComPassion We’ve all seen the TV ads. to them and you, we have some furniture and household items to start anew. Also, Interlink and the Gleaners supplied us with beds thanks to your donations. Also, a big thank you to Buy-Low for their support and kindness and thank you to The Morning Star and CHBC for getting our words and needs out to the people. It was a great help. I hope I haven't forgot to thank anyone as there were so many of you perfect strangers that helped us in our greatest time of need. Thanks to my family, friends and you, the good people of Vernon, for giving so much when we had so little. I just wanted to take this time to thank you all on behalf of my daughter Katelyn and myself. We wish you all the very best Christmas and new year. God bless you all. kat mackenzie

to see the suffering. Or we don’t know what effect we could possibly have. We’ve heard the stories of so-called charities who are actually just lining their own pockets, and this is probably just another one of those. However, in a recent article on the topic of effective giving (by Bruce Wydick), economists rated child sponsorship as the most effective long-term approach to solving poverty. One of the most highly rated and effective organizations for child sponsorship (and the one we choose) is Compassion Canada (or International). Look them up at the websites of the Better Business Bureau or Charity Navigator to see for yourself (great sites to rate any charity). Now this is no guilt trip folks. It’s a reality check. It’s an opportunity. It’s a reward. Feeding, educating and loving children in the Third World is all of those things and, of course, more. Sponsoring a child through a reputable organization is a wonderful thing for you and your family, and for the child and their family. We gave our sponsor child a birthday gift of $50 last July. She recently wrote back and thanked us for the $441,001 rupiah (Indonesia). This puts things in perspective for me. I really do have

the extra money. I think most of us do if we really committed to it. We talk about investing our money. Think about the intangible yet priceless returns of investing in another human being. Joe harder

last three years to the Pleasant Valley Secondary School’s twice-a-week healthy lunch program. However, policy states the fund can only be used for the same cause two years in a row without a motion being made. Funds were given to the program in 2009, 2010 and 2011. “I’m the new mayor and I would like to do this again, but we need to send a letter apolo-

Christine Fraser stated the letter should also include a suggestion to PVSS to apply for a township grant-in-aid to help with healthy lunch program funding. Council unanimously agreed to the $200 and Fraser’s recommendation.

The policy states that, “the chief administrative officer shall ensure he receives a written request from the Lavington fire hall for presentation to council if they wish to utilize a

Approval will be subject to the fire chief making appropriate arrangements for protection in the Lavington area, when the fire truck is outside the municipal boundaries.” However, Stamhuis says there has been no issue with resources taking away from a fire. “They use an antique fire truck now for the parades,” he said.

There was a feline near a Vernon school but not a wild animal. There were reports of a cougar near Mission Hill Elementary Thursday but based on tracks, authorities believe what was seen was a large house cat. “Fifty per cent of cougar complaints are not actually cougar,” said Brent Smith, conservation officer. It can be challenging to correctly identify a species based on the distance between the animal

and the person and other factors like trees and sunlight. “It’s pretty easy to mistake something that’s not a cougar to be a cougar,” said Smith. Once reports were received Thursday, Mission Hill Elementary administration took action. No children were allowed outside and parents were asked to pick up students who walk home. Also on Thursday, conservation officers tracked and destroyed a cougar near Falkland after it killed a dog. “It definitely posed a threat to other pets and livestock,” said Smith.

You can dispose of your Christmas tree and help people who are recovering from devastating burns. The Vernon Fire Department is hosting a Christmas tree drive-thru Jan. 5 and 6 to raise money for the B.C. Firefighters Burn Fund. “The burn fund is a registered charity established in 1978 by the B.C. Professional Firefighters Association,” said Chris Kulak, firefighter. “It provides life-saving, lifeChris Kulak supporting and life-enriching services to the people in B.C.” Besides assisting burn survivors, the fund increases the public’s knowledge about fire and burn safety issues. The Vernon fire hall is located at 3401 30th St. and the event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Off-duty firefighters will give the public a coffee-to-go and vacuum their vehicle,” said Kulak. The trees will be chipped by members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

Good citizen sought Morning Star Staff

The search is on for Greater Vernon’s next good citizen. the agenda to immediately after the public opportunity to address council. “The purpose of this recommendation is to reduce the waiting time for members of the public who may be waiting to hear council’s debate and final outcome regarding a bylaw,” said Keri-Ann Austin, corporate officer. “Currently, members of the public often have to wait for quite some time before the bylaws are debated by council.” Council members will consider the proposed changes to the agenda.

It’s going to cost more to use Enderby’s Cliffside cemetery. City council has given three readings to the cemetery regulations bylaw, including fees. “They are going up to reflect costs,” said Mayor Howie Cyr. Total fees for a resident adult lot will be $353 starting Jan. 1, 2013 and that will climb to $429 in 2017. The total fee for resident cremated remains will be $171 in 2013 and $208 in 2017. Fees will also climb for Howie Cyr internment services (opening and closing), exhumation and supplies like grave liners and cremation vaults. Cultural support grows Enderby taxpayers are getting behind culture. City council has decided to provide a $500 grant to the 2013 Enderby Arts Festival. “The festival has the largest outdoors artisans market in the Okanagan with 45 vendors,” said Neil Fidler, Enderby Arts Festival chairperson. “The festival is a unique opportunity to showcase Enderby, its rich arts and culture, hospitality and natural beauty.” The anticipated cost of the 2013 festival is $5,000, The arts council funds 60 per cent and 40 per cent comes from outside sources and local sponsors. For students of Vernon’s Alexis Park Elementary School, Santa’s elves wear blue and grey. Representatives of On Side Restoration – wearing blue or grey T-shirts and golf shirts – were on hand at the school Monday to present every student (more than 220) with a Christmas goody bag. “Every year for the past five years, we’ve been doing this,” said Neville Byles, branch manager of Vernon’s On Side Restoration. “We hit up our business associates and friends and ask them to make a donation.” Last year’s event raised more than $11,500 and On Side was able to sponsor four families and give Christmas goody gift bags to kids in Cherryville and at Ashton Creek. In five years, On Side branches, including Vernon’s, have raised more than $38,000 and helped out many kids and their families. “We have a big gathering every year and tell our employees and those attending to come with a full wallet and make sure the wallet’s empty when they leave,” said Diane Prince, Vernon On Side Restoration’s operations manager, before handing out the first goody bags to the kindergarten students at Alexis Park. “This is the fun part,” she added. “Watching the kids’ faces just light up.” One of the gift bags was taller than kindergarten student Jayden Nicholson, who had to drag the bag to his seat on the gym floor. Oh, and the gifts do come with a rule: “You’re allowed to peek into the bag but you can’t take out what’s in it until you get back to your class room,” said Prince. Shopping for the bags falls under the direction of Kim Prince of On Side, and she begins her shopping in January of each year. The company makes contact with a school and is given a needs/wish list of what the kids could use and really want. The gifts include things like Transformers, Barbies, arts and crafts, board games, and stickers.

Get ready for a Komasket music Festival reunion with the return of dance band samsara for a special new Year’s eve party at the Vernon recreation Centre Dec. 31. samsara members getting back together include drummer/percussionist Devaki thomas (left), guitarist Walt musekamp, lead singer-guitarist thomas thomas and bassist Jacob Chatterton.

Komasket revisited for the new year Dance band Samsara returns home for a Komasket Music Festival NYE reunion Kristin Froneman Morning Star Staff

An ocean and a mass of land may separate Thomas and Devaki Thomas from where their heart lies, but that hasn’t stopped them from continuing to bring music to this side of the world. It’s in the middle of a kekuli, on sacred Syilx (Okanagan) land where the Thomases first started what would become one of the valley’s fastest growing and beloved music festivals — Komasket. As the festival’s artistic directors, and leaders of well-known dance band Samsara, the couple have spent the last few years organizing Komasket from London, England, where they now live. Unable to stage the festival this past summer due to personal reasons, they are now ready to return to their old stomping grounds — this time at the Vernon Recreation Centre — to headline the next Komasket dance on New Year’s Eve and to meet with fellow Komasketeers on the future of the festival. “We’re trying to fit in everything while we are in Vernon over the holidays,” said Devaki. “The show is number one; the second is to reconnect with family and friends, and the third is to get together with the Komasket community to discuss the future of the festival.” It was Okanagan Indian Band Coun. Mollie Bono who first showed the Thomases Komasket Park on Westside Road, used for powwows and other OKIB events, more than 10 years ago. They all agreed it would

be a great venue for Samsara to stage a concert. The rest, as they say, is history. From those humble beginnings in 2002, the Komasket Music Festival has grown to welcome both independent and well-known recording artists from around the world. Thomas recalls 2011 as the year when the festival really made its mark. After the 2010 appearance by Jamaican reggae legends The Wailers, headliners Jon Anderson, of Yes fame, and Canadian icon Buffy St. Marie came to perform on the mainstage. “We talk about that year a lot,” said Thomas. “Things came right in 2011. It’s where everyone’s attention was and where I think the purity of the festival really showed itself. Things can shift for all the right reasons and I think our lineup, Buffy and Jon, play music for all the right reasons.” This year started off as an extremely difficult time for the Thomases, with the sudden death of Devaki’s brother Kunja Chatterton. The family needed time to grieve, and so they decided to take this year off from staging the festival and also reassess the future. “We really missed coming back for Komasket this summer,” said Thomas. “When we started Komasket, it was our way of putting energy back in the community for our family and friends. We tried to express that and to share the experience.” Talks have already been held with the Okanagan Indian Band to hold this coming year’s festival, and bands are already being booked, although the Thomases are waiting until they hold a meeting with their crew before they make any announcements. “The talks with the (OKIB) were very positive,” said Devaki. “The land, in our minds, is one of the most positive things about the festival. An understanding came out of the meeting that we want to look into the long-term... We needed to be clear with what we wanted and what they wanted. For

trust to build takes time.” The festival’s intention has always been to show and give respect to the land, especially considering the roots of Komasket Park. In that way, the Thomases and their volunteers have done their best to keep the festival family friendly and keep drugs and alcohol at bay. “It took some time to come to an understanding. I think the community always honoured where the festival was held, but it took us a while to become part of the community. There is a bond there now. We’ve become part of people’s lives. I didn’t know that was going to happen when we started,” said Devaki. The New Year’s Eve show, which serves as a fundraiser for the festival, is another way to bring the community together under the warm Komasket banner. It’s been six years since Samsara played a NYE dance in Vernon, although the band has performed at every Komasket festival since the beginning. Arguably the first calypso, reggae, soca band to ever come out of the Okanagan, a Vernon gig by Samsara is guaranteed to instill some nostalgia — and frenzied dancing. The band started playing shows around town starting in the mid-’90s, and earned its reputation as one of Western Canada’s best loved dance bands upon touring the province and beyond, and releasing three well-received albums. For Samsara’s New Year’s Eve gig, the Thomases will be reuniting with guitarist Walt Musekamp and bassist/keyboardist Jacob Chatterton. The band will also be joined by a special guest for a few songs, who is a well known player in the Shuswap, said Thomas. “I’ve been working on some new tracks, which is ambitious considering we don’t have a lot of rehearsal time,” he said. “We don’t want to come back and just play old

songs.” Joining Samsara will be Wassabi Duo, an electro-ragga dance band comprised of Melissa M3 (percussionist/singer) and Gisto (guitarist/singer/producer) of Nelson’s wellknown dance band Wassabi Collective. “The duo has a distinctive sound,” said Devaki. “We went on a journey with them when they were in the Wassabi Collective that started in Penticton. We hit the B.C. trail around the same time. We kept crossing paths. Having them here will be a trip back in time.” Also joining the lineup will be Vancouverbased DJ Timothy Wisdom, whose original productions, mad turntablism, and vocal skills have been earning him hype among culturally conscious hipsters, post-ravers, neo-hippies and social activists. Wisdom has performed for some of today’s largest festivals, including the Vancouver International Folk Festival, Shambhala, and the infamous Burning Man Festival. Local artists joining in the festivities are Expression World Music Collective, featuring percussionist Angela Roy who heads this six-piece band that mixes traditional songs from Africa and Acadia with upbeat rhythms. “The legendary all-ages artistic atmosphere of Komasket dances is popular with Okanagan crowds and the Komasket crew loves hosting events at the Vernon Rec Centre as the sheer space allows for lots of room on the dance floor,” said Devaki. “We are aiming to make New Year’s Eve feel like people have stepped into Komasketville.” The event will also feature vendors, a cash bar and a silent auction. Doors to the Vernon Recreation Centre auditorium will open at 8 p.m. Tickets will only be sold in advance and cost $40 (kids 12 and under are free), available at the Ticket Seller (549-7469, www.ticketseller.ca) and the Bean Scene coffee house in Vernon.

After a successful sold-out screening of the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour in November, a whole new batch of outdoor adventure films returns to the Vernon Performing Arts Centre for two different screenings this coming weekend. Expect more films on climbing, skiing, kayaking, BASE jumping, mountain biking, along with cultural, humourous and environmental offerings. “Both screenings will have all different films,” said Nikki Sims, Banff Film Festival Coordinator with Vernon Search and Rescue. This is Vernon Search and Rescue Group Society’s 21st year of presenting the Best of Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour. The world tour is produced by Mountain Culture at the Banff Centre, and features winning films and audience favourites from more than 300 films entered in the annual film festival. From these entries, approximately 30 to 40 are licensed for the world tour and offer a broad range of subject matter – all in some way relating to the outdoors. “The Banff festival is Vernon Search and Rescue’s major annual fundraiser. We are a non-profit, volunteer search and rescue

All members are trained in basic search and rescue techniques, with many advancing into specialized rescue areas such as swift water, flat ice, rope, avalanche, and tracking.” Beyond the specific role of search and rescue, the unit assists the RCMP, the B.C. Ambulance Service, the Coroners Office, the B.C. Forest Service, and the Office of the Fire Commissioner in various tasks from evidence searches and body recoveries to traffic control and evacuation assistance.

“Our organization operates on a 100 per cent volunteer basis, with each member donating time and money towards this cause,” said Sims. “As such, we are dependent on donations from the community for the acquisition of capital equipment, including ATVs, snow machines, boats, and trucks, and for allimportant training upgrades.” More information about Vernon Search and Rescue is available at www.vernonsar.ca The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour screens at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre Saturday, Dec. 29 and Sunday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 available at Ticket Seller in the VPAC, phone 250-549-7469 or order online at www.ticketseller. ca.

A Christmas miracle Kathy ZoZula

Special to The Morning Star

When I brought home a new cat, I was asked what I would do if my other cat one day returned. With tears in my eyes, I answered honestly, “She’s gone. Only a miracle could bring her back. But if that miracle ever did happen, we would be a two-cat family. And I would be the happiest person on the face of this earth.” Christmas arrived early this year – my miracle is curled up on the couch, purring. Our story began more than a year ago with a single phone call. Local photographer and friend Brenda Hala wondered if I was busy that Sunday. She had volunteered to take promotional photographs for the Vernon SPCA and could use an extra “critter wrangler.” I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a few hours than hanging out with good friends, surrounded by animals. But I told Brenda – and myself – “Just remember, I am NOT coming home with a cat!” After spending some time with my horse, I dropped my dog Emma off at Wiggle Waggle Pet Hotel for the day and met Brenda and her mom Gertie at the SPCA. We began with the dogs — all so friendly and trusting, I couldn’t help but wonder how they had ended up homeless. Then we moved on to the kittens; it was like being in a room full of furry little ping-pong balls hanging off the backdrop and bouncing off the walls! Still laughing, we finished with the adult cats. And then I held Frisbee. She snuggled against me and brushed her head under my chin and gazed back at me with those amazing green eyes. I was toast. It didn’t take Brenda long to get me to admit that yes, there was one cat that I had felt a special connection to. After that it was only a matter of time before I called the SPCA, visited Frisbee several times and at last brought her home. Along with her new home, Frisbee was given a new name. The name given her by the SPCA was cute, but this cat was so much more than cute. From the start, I felt there was such depth and wisdom to her. Searching the Internet for ideas, I discovered a beautiful Japanese legend, “Maneki Neko” or “The Beckoning Cat.” Given her jade green eyes and the way I had been instantly drawn to her, she became my “Maneki Neko,” or Neko for short. In the days and weeks that followed, I delighted in getting to know this little cat. I found it hard to believe that a former stray had impeccable house manners. She was a little timid, but thrived on companionship and as long as I let her set the parameters, she stayed close by. I smiled at the way she always announced herself when she entered a room. But more than anything, I was amazed at how quickly a cat and a dog became fast friends. I loved how she would rub against Emma’s chest and reach up to brush her face under Emma’s chin. Emma adored her; our little family seemed complete. I was thrilled when Frisbee’s portrait was selected for one of the SPCA banners, and I loved the caption: “Frisbee found her forever home with a loving guardian...”

Kathy Zozula with her dog, Emma, and Neko, the miracle cat that was returned to her after going missing for 14 months. Forever sounded perfect. Neko wasn’t more than three years old, so I was already imagining the next 17 or 18 years with her. I never dreamed that our forever would end so abruptly just one short month later. A friend had kindly offered to kitty sit for me one weekend. I put Neko into her crate and drove the 20 km to my friend’s farm. I felt as upset as Neko and Emma at being separated, but I reassured them that this was only for two days. That was the last time we saw Neko.

“As my hope faded, I was touched by acts of kindness by others, total strangers who were moved by Neko’s story.” — Kathy Zozula Somehow, just hours before we were to take her home, she managed to slip unseen out of the house. We spent the day searching the various out-buildings, surrounding fields, and finally the immediate neighbourhood. As night approached, the reality hit that Neko was in real danger. The next morning I faced the possibility that Neko might be trying to get back home on her own. The thought was terrifying as that journey led through 20 km of forest and fields filled with coyotes and other predators. Neko had been a stray, so she was a survivor. But how useful were the “street smarts” of a city cat when it came to surviv-

ing in a rural environment? It was urgent that I find her as soon as possible. I received so much encouragement and help from friends. Together, we phoned numerous agencies, volunteer organizations and individuals involved in finding strays; we posted flyers throughout the area; notified the media; searched the surrounding area. As the days passed, my search expanded north, along a straight line home. Daily I stopped at farms along the route, asking permission to look around each property. I explained that I had brought my own dog, Emma, because she would pick up the scent if Neko had recently passed that way. I knew it was an imposition and was prepared to be turned away. Instead, everywhere I stopped people were sympathetic, many offered to put their own dogs into the house while I searched, and several even offered to walk with me and point out some spots where a cat might find shelter. Weeks passed without a single lead. There were no numbers left to call, nowhere else to look and winter was approaching. As my hope faded, I was touched by acts of kindness by others, total strangers who were moved by Neko’s story. It seemed there were a lot of people praying for her safe return. One lady responded by making a donation to the SPCA; another phoned the number on the flyer just to ask whether Neko had been found; a friend told a friend whose mother lived in Vernon but drove to Armstrong to look for a cat she had never met. Hearing these stories eased the pain of what now seemed an inevitable end.

cream cheese, softened 1/2 lemon, juiced 1/2 teaspoon dried dill weed, to taste Salt and pepper to taste 1 ounce salmon roe, optional Place smoked salmon in a blender or food processor, and blend

until smooth. Mix in heavy cream, cream cheese, juice of half of a lemon, dried dill weed, salt and pepper. Blend to desired consistency. Transfer to a medium serving dish, and garnish with salmon roe if desired. Serve with crackers or veggies of your choice. Cheesy Spinach and Artichoke Dip 14 ounces canned artichoke hearts, drained, finely chopped 10 ounces frozen chopped spinach, thawed, well-drained 3⁄4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

3⁄4 cup reduced fat Mayonnaise 1⁄2 cup 2% shredded mozzarella cheese 1⁄2 teaspoon garlic powder Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix ingredients; spoon into 9-inch quiche dish or pie plate. Bake 20 minutes or until heated through. Serve with crackers and assorted cut-up fresh vegetables. Special Extra: Substitute 1 envelope (0.7 oz) Good Seasons Italian Salad Dressing Mix for the garlic powder. Awesome Spinach

and Mushroom Dip: Substitute 1 cup chopped mushrooms for the artichokes. Makeover Savings: This made-over version of the popular artichoke dip uses 3/4 cup reduced fat mayonnaise instead of regular mayonnaise, and a blend of Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses instead of the 2 cups mozzarella used in the original recipe. These simple tweaks save more than 50 calories and 5.5 grams of fat per serving when compared to the traditional artichoke dip.

As I readied the house for a second Christmas without Neko, our new cat Barbie began settling in. On the evening of Dec. 4, I received a message from the Kelowna SPCA: they had a question for me and would I please return their call. Our conversation the next morning seemed to confirm that the SPCA was simply conducting a routine follow-up on lost pet reports. “Had I adopted a cat from the SPCA? Did I happen to lose her?” But then the astonishing statement — a lady living in Enderby had found a cat bearing

the same tattoo! This had to be a mistake! Marilyn Wittner called me after work. I e-mailed her a photo of Neko and Marilyn replied, “If it isn’t her, it’s her twin.” Miraculously, 14 months after her disappearance, I received the news I had prayed for. Neko was alive and well, living at a home some 30 km from where she had last been seen. Marilyn had been caring for her since she first appeared at her home in early November, but another month passed before the cat trusted her enough to be han-

dled. That was when Marilyn first saw the tattoo. She had two cats of her own, but hadn’t hesitated to offer a home to a stray she called Rusty. Seeing the tattoo, her first thoughts were how wonderful it would be if Neko already had a family that loved her and if they could be re-united in time for Christmas. I didn’t really believe this miracle had happened until I saw Neko for myself. The instant I brought her in the house, she remembered home. She purred; she lay down and did her happy little flip-flops on the kitchen floor; she rubbed against the furniture. But best of all, she rubbed against Emma’s chest and reached up to brush her face under Emma’s chin. Emma is ecstatic. Neko and her new sister Barbie are getting acquainted and I know that they too will be friends before long. Neko has always been a “talker” but vocalizes more than ever now. It seems she is trying to tell me all about the adventures she had since we last saw each other. I wonder how she managed to survive, how she came to be in Enderby, and how many other people might have helped a little stray tabby along the way? We are grateful to each and every person who showed us kindness through prayers, thoughts, words or actions. God bless you all, and merry Christmas!

Neko’s adventure ends happily continued from A21 Months passed, and I finally ran out of hope. I had to accept the reality that Neko was gone. The worst was knowing that in her final moments I wasn’t there for her. She must have felt abandoned, frightened, hurt and alone. I knew that I should take down all those flyers I had posted, but couldn’t bring myself to do it. Emma grieved as much as I did, but the time came to bring another cat into our home. The house was just too quiet and empty without one.

Campaign targets reporting drivers wade paterson Black Press

It’s less common for witnesses to phone 911 and report dangerous driving behaviour. “The perception we’ve seen is people aren’t calling until it’s too late. We want to stop that driving behaviour before it’s too late,” said Cst. Kris Clark. “We want to stop that offender to ensure their

sobriety and to deal with their dangerous driving behaviour.” Kelowna RCMP will be participating in Mothers Against Drunk Driving Canada’s Campaign 911 by affixing bumper stickers to marked police vehicles that read: Report Impaired Drivers, Call 911. The city will also be putting up a few signs along major Kelowna roads that have a similar message.

Cents slam Snakes at Wesbild Graeme Corbett Morning Star Staff

There wasn’t all that much holiday cheer going on in the Vernon Vipers’ dressing room Friday night at Wesbild Centre. Head coach Jason Williamson may have even added a couple names to his naughty list following the Snakes’ 6-1 pummeling at the hands of the Merritt Centennials in the first leg of a fight-filled B.C. Hockey League home-and-home set. Vernon, occupants of the Interior cellar at 11-15-0-7, visited the second-place Cents (18-11-1-1) Saturday night at Nicola Valley Arena. “We’ve just got to be more urgent and more desperate. They just came in and out-willed us,” said Williamson. “I warned them all week long that was going to be the case and we had a bunch of passengers tonight.” First star Regan Soquila and second star Derek Huisman combined for nine points for Merritt, helping their team skate to a 2-0 lead after one period. Huisman skated the puck in from the blueline and spotted Soquila back door for the first snipe in the fourth minute. Soquila redirected defenceman Charlie Donlin’s point shot for the second tally. “I had my back to the play, but our d-man took a shot, it took a couple bounces and landed on my stick,” said Soquila, a Maple Ridge product. He leads the Cents with 12-23-35 in 31 games. As a third-year player, Soquila has been through the rebuilding process in Merritt and is happy with the direction

Kevin Mitchell Sports Editor

Adam Clark recorded 37 saves for first star as the Salmon Arm SilverBacks bounced the host West Kelowna Warriors 4-1 in B.C. Hockey League action Friday night at Royal LePage Place. Outshot 38-19, the SilverBacks got two points from Vernon product Alex Gillies, who assisted on the opening goal by Brandon Mistal and provided an insurance goal in the second period. Bryden Marsh, from Ryan Schwalbe, and Schwalbe, unassisted, completed the offence for Salmon Arm, fifth in the Interior, and three points ahead of the Vernon Vipers, at 14-15-1-3. Marcus Basara, a former Viper, handled the 12-9-2-7 Warriors’ attack in front of 1,352 fans, assists to captain Max French and Seb Lloyd. Most people celebrate a birthday by going out for dinner or getting together with family and friends. Cliff Acob went a little more hardcore last month. Off the wall actually. He and fellow teacher Aaron Hoffman competed in the World’s Toughest Mudder last month at Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J. Tough Mudder events are 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test your all-around strength, stamina and mental grit before getting handed a beer when you’re done. There is mud, fire, ice-water and 10,000 volts of electricity everywhere as you climb 12-foot walls and crawl through tunnels. Organizers describe the premise as a way of thinking, where entrants unlock a true sense of accomplishment, have a great time, and discover a unique camaraderie with fellow participants. Acob, who runs the High Performer’s program at VSS, and Hoffman, an Okanagan Landing Elementary teacher, qualified for the New Jersey obstacle race by doing well at the Seattle Tough Mudder last summer. The World’s Toughest Mudder is a 24-hour race where you do as many laps as you can, with 40 obstacles, compared to the one-lap (two to three hours), 20-obstacle Tough Mudder. Acob and Hoffman Aaron finished 389th and 340th, respectively, out of the 1,300 participants who started the event. They completed 60 kilometres and 112 obstacles. “It was a neat way to celebrate a birthday (41st),” said Acob, who has done two Ironman Canadas and enjoys mountain biking, skiing, canoeing and rock climbing. “It was my toughest race/event I’ve ever done. That being said, I’m in one piece and I’ll be going back.” Acob, who specialized in the sprints and long jump while at Seattle Pacific University, said his wife, Heather, reminded him that he needed to come home to their four children with his limbs intact. He found the opening 16-kilometre lap rather easy, but he struggled with muscle cramping on the second lap. “Somewhere in lap three (50-km), the 10-foot walls seemed a little more than 10 feet and the water seemed a little colder. My hamstring was very tight – I learned later I had pulled it – but it was my 41st birthday. Pretty funny to hear the most unenthu- Aaron Hoffman siastic birthday song as other athletes tried to celebrate my birthday as they hovered around a portable heater in the medical tent.” Every summer, Acob gets together with university buddies and does the weekend warrior thing. Last year, they mountainbiked for three days in Whistler. The year before that, they climbed Mt. Baker. Last summer, it was Tough Mudder in Seattle. Before Washington, Acob and Hoffman entered the Vancouver Tough Mudder. “We didn’t know what to expect and relied on our current condition to attempt

vernon’s cliff Acob puts his agility to the test on one of many obstacles in the World’s toughest Mudder at Raceway Park in englishtown, n.J. the so-called Probably the Toughest race on the Planet,” said Acob, who played volleyball, hoops and football in high school in Richmond. “After the mud and freezing lake swim, Aaron and I finished the course in two hours. Now Tough Mudder gives you the opportunity to enter your time to see if you finished in the top five per cent (even though it’s not a race). “If you do, you are eligible to participate in the World’s Toughest Mudder. I didn’t think we were that fast, but sure enough, a week later we received an e-mail stating that we can sign up for the World’s Toughest Mudder. It was awesome.” For Hoffman, a 38-year-old former Merritt Centennials’ defenceman who still skates a zillion miles an hour, the New Jersey torture test was just another day in his hectic life. He said the last few months have been completely at a red-lined pace as his family is getting ready to move to Australia for a year’s teacher exchange. “Between teaching, performing power skating lessons, coach mentorship in North Okanagan Minor Hockey Association, playing rec hockey with the boys and occasionally helping out with my daughter’s hockey team, and fitting in training sessions sometimes starting at 10 at night, it really makes you realize how much one can take on in life. This cannot be accom-

plished, however, without support. My family is amazing and helped me a lot. I will never forget my kids cheering me on as I ran at Kal Beach in early November and counted my chin-ups under the dock after every lap.” Hoffman has done six Ironman Canada races, a few marathons and trail runs of various distances, the longest being an 80-km with his wife, Kara, a few years ago in Kelowna. He found the ultimate test in New Jersey. “Simply put, this was the most difficult race I have ever been involved in. It was incredibly challenging and an unbelievable event to be involved in. It was a great atmosphere to be a part of; the people were awesome. Although the day did not go as planned, I know that I will be back and ready to go next time. I had a great adventure with Cliff from the days of late-night runs, to taking on the obstacles at night with head lamps in Coldstream, in anticipation of the big race. “It was a lot of fun working with Cliff on race day. I wish him luck in this year’s training as I am sure he will be back next year to kick it in Jersey. For now, I will surf and have registered for Ironman in Western Australia for next December. It might be a couple years ‘till I get back to Jersey but I’ll be back and next time I will be bringing my wife. She’s the toughest girl I know.”

Other than the Olympics, it is the biggest event a BMX racer can compete in. And five Vernon BMX Club riders were there to take in the 35th annual U.S. Grands in Tulsa, Okla. Ken Botterill, Dean Botterill, Chris Spence and Shylo Orchard, all sponsored by Krapp Weasel Racing, all made the 36-hour trek to Tulsa to ride against the world’s best. Orchard, the newly crowned Canadian girls Cruiser champion, won the Race of Champions, and was runner-up to the world No. 1 in the Grands. Ken Botterill, 70, racing in the 61 and Over division, placed sixth after crashing with a 78-year-old in the first corner. Ken’s son, Dean, raced in a field of 42 in the 46-50 age class. He crashed in the last corner of his semi. Spence battled 48 riders in the 40-45 class, but missed the main. First-year rider Travis Sergeant, 13, missed out on the finals in a stacked field of 42 Novice racers. The event set a new record the number of motos (650+) and riders (5,200+). Krapp Weasel thanked sponsors Skyride Cycle, CanWest Propane, Silver Star Mountain Resort and A&W.

Shylo Orchard left, pedals her way to a Ladies Cruiser title at the Canadian Grand Nationals in Chilliwack. Orchard was runner-up in her division at the 35th annual U.S. Grand Nationals in Tulsa, Okla. It is the largest BMX event in the world next to the Olympics.

The North Okanagan Knights went a little trigger happy in their final Kootenay International Hockey League tilt before the Christmas break. The Knights peppered netminder Tyrell Hamer-Jackson with 50 shots and were rewarded with a 5-2 win over the host Kamloops Storm Friday night at McArthur Island Arena. Nearly half those shots (24) came in a scoreless first period, but the Knights’ perseverance paid off with three unanswered goals in the span of 81 seconds to start the second frame. Derek Andrews started the attack just 20 seconds into the period, followed by consecutive goals by Mat Lambert just eight seconds apart. Lambert, a Vernon product, took a hard hit shortly after, breaking a took in half, which forced him out of the game. The 21-10-1-2 Knights were already without veterans Tanner Burns, Brett Hawrys and Josh Ellis. Head coach Kris Mallette dressed call-ups Curtis Sexsmith of Vernon, Carson Richards of Enderby, and Cole McCaskill of Kamloops. “I had guys with every excuse to quit, but we played a very simple game and we just weren’t making a lot of mistakes,” said Mallette. Third-period snipes by Connor Richards and Andrew completed North Okanagan’s attack. North Okanagan visits the Chase Heat (7-24-3-1) on New Year’s Eve. The Storm are 13-18-2-4.

Bridge by Phillip Alder

BRIDGE KNOWLEDGE BUILDS ON LESSONS Tom Bodett, an author, voice actor and radio host, said, “In school, you’re taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you’re given a test that teaches you a lesson.” In bridge, you are given tests that you might pass by remembering previous lessons; but if you fail a test, hopefully you will remember the lesson for next time. This deal occurred during one of my playing lessons. East opened two diamonds, a textbook weak two. South overcalled three clubs, thinking that to pass with 13 points was wimpish. Then, though, when North advanced with three spades, that was forcing and painted

South into a worse corner. (It is antipercentage to be able to land on a pinhead in these crowded auctions. Advancer must be allowed to investigate the right game without having to leap around.) South had no good bid. Eventually, he gambled on three no-trump despite his inflexible, weak diamond stopper. North also took his time, but finally passed. (Note that four spades should go down, declarer losing two diamonds and two spades.) The defense to three no-trump is also textbook. West leads the diamond jack (higher of a doubleton) and East ducks the trick, signaling encouragement with his eight. Then South has no chance. But note that

if East takes the first trick, the contract can be made. The curious may work it out. In no-trump, whether you are declarer or a defender, if you are trying to establish a suit in which the opponents have one winner, make them take that winner as quickly as possible.

Annie Strutz

July 3, 1910 ~ December 18, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of my mother, Annie, who passed away peacefully at Pleasant Valley Manor on December 18, 2012. Annie was born in Austria and immigrated to Canada with her family. Annie will be lovingly remembered by her son, Richard (Dick) and his wife Marilyn of Kamloops, BC; 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; her sister Pearl (Portland, Oregon) and brother Tony (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). She is sadly predeceased by her husband of 71 years, Michael, sister Rosella, and brothers Bill and Michael. Annie was well known for her lovely flowers and huge gardens. She will also be fondly remembered as the world’s greatest perogy maker. Annie loved sewing, and donated a lot of her time sewing quilts for her church. She remained faithful to God and her church throughout her life. Annie had a kind word for everyone, and will be missed. A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday, December 27, 2012 at Lakeview Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 2850 Dry Valley Road, Kelowna, BC. A Celebration of Life will follow at a later date. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.valleyviewfuneralhome.com. Arrangements entrusted to Valleyview Funeral Home, Kelowna, BC 250-765-3147.

MARTIN, Albert Henry Ray It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Albert Henry Ray Martin on December 19, 2012 in Vernon, BC. (nee Forry)

With sad hearts, the family of Florence (Honey) Gillette announce her passing peacefully in her sleep at home with her husband near her side on Dec. 18, 2012. Mum was born in Bateman Sask, Jan 6, 1919 to Frank and Mary Forry, the second youngest of nine children. The Forry family moved to Vernon in the late ‘30s and reacquainted with the Gillette family which led to a 4 year courtship resulting in her marriage to Harold on August 10th 1940. Mum was predeceased by her mother, father, six sisters, and two brothers. She is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Harold, children, Bill (Carol), Marilyn (Lanny Balcaen), Gary (Arlene), Don (Heather), and Wendy (Gary Clarke). She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews to which she was known as Aunt Honey. Along with raising ¿ve children Mum spent 17 years teaching kindergarten at the United Church from the mid ‘50’s to the early ‘70’s. Mum’s joy was family, gardening, quilting, camping and their cabin at Mabel Lake. When Dad retired in 1979 their desire to travel eventually lead them to Apache Junction Az where they would spend the next 20 winters exploring and travelling as well as cruising in such places as Russia, the Holy Land, the Caribbean, and Alaska. They also travelled to Australia and New Zealand, Europe and the UK. In the early spring they would return to their summer home at Mabel Lake and enjoy the closeness of their family and many friends. For the past 14 years they have continued to spend as much time at Mabel Lake as weather and health would permit and overwintered at their daughter’s home here in Coldstream. Special thanks to Dr. Van Zyl and the Community Health and Palliative Care nurses and staff who have attended her and made it possible for Mum to spend her last days at home where she wanted to be. A funeral service will be held at the Trinity United Church on Alexis Park Dr. on Dec. 28th at 2:00pm. A tea and reception will follow at the church. In lieu of Àowers, donations can be made to Vernon Hospice House. Arrangements are in the care of Vernon Funeral Home 250-542-0155.
