Aldergrove delivers new home to burned out duo

The Aldergrove community went all-out to help a man and his dog who lost their humble home in a fire on Dec. 12. By Saturday afternoon, a fullyrefurbished camper filled with groceries and goods was delivered to the homeless duo. Aldergrove firefighters had responded promptly to the fire about 8:30 p.m. as the camper was parked on the Aldergrove Mini Storage property just across Fraser Highway from Aldergrove Fire Hall #3. They arrived just in time to douse the camper before the diesel pickup truck also was destroyed. The first fire lieutenant on the scene, Robert Vinette, said, “Flames were coming through the roof when we pulled up to attack it. The camper was clearly a write-off but we thought at least we could save the truck.” The owner, Greg Laing, had only briefly left the camper to help a friend at the mini storage and ran back in time to save his dog from inside the camper. However, he lost all his material possessions in the fire. It’s believed that the dog had knocked over a candle, which then caught the curtains on fire. “After we put the fire out he was standing with his dog, almost crying; he lost everything he had,” said firefighter Jamie Shaw. “We were spreading out what we could salvage from inside the camper but there was really nothing left.” Laing had no insurance and nowhere else to go. School shooting prompts review of Langley emergency procedures MONIQUE TAMMINGA Times Reporter

The Langley School District has taken some steps in the wake of Friday’s tragic school shooting in Connecticut, including reviewing its emergency procedures. Grief counsellors are available and school administrators have spent time debriefing on the incident and identifying which students and colleagues might require additional support, said Langley school district spokesperson Sandy Wakeling. The district is also offering advice to parents on the best way to deal with such a tragedy. The specific response the district has varies by school, depending on the grade

range and ages of the students, said Wakeling. Generally however, the following will apply: • There will understandably be some anxiety around this incident and staff and students may have some level of emotional impact from the news. Staff and parents have been asked to watch for any changes in children’s behaviour in the coming days, particularly among vulnerable students, and refer appropriately to school counsellors as needed. • The district has recommended that parents limit their child’s exposure to the media footage of the incident and limit any discussions to the basic facts. • Staff have been advised to refrain from

sharing images or video footage of the incident with students, the district recommends that any discussions be limited to a brief sharing of facts. • The district has shared additional information received from the Ministry of Education with all schools regarding crisis/ trauma response. • Staff have been reminded to wear proper ID tags when visiting other schools, and to be vigilant in ensuring all visitors to their schools sign in and wear identification. • The safety and well-being of students is always the District’s top priority. Staff have been requested to review emergency response procedures and ensure they are up to date.

That’s when the mini storage owner, Jack Dhaliwal stepped in to open up a heated storage locker for Laing and his dog. Dhaliwal had permitted Laing to park the camper on his property for the past few weeks and was one of many in the community who grew to like Laing. “Greg was trying to get work on a farm but had no place to go in the meantime so I said he could stay. He’s a really good guy,” said Dhaliwal. The firefighters were also moved by Laing’s plight, as were the truck drivers from MHL Transport next door. “I figured we could get him some clothes at least because all he had left was what he was wearing,” said Shaw. “And when a couple of truck drivers from

MHL Transport pulled in they came running up, asking if Greg was OK. “So I sent out a text message asking friends what we could do and that’s when my phone went crazy (with offers of cash donations),” said Shaw. Shaw went home and on a whim started looking for a replacement camper on Craigslist. He looked at four campers around the valley area but none were a fit, until he found one in Brookswood that was clean and within reach price-wise at $1,000. “The word got out fast (that cash was needed for a camper),” said Vinette. First to rise to the challenge were the 24 employees at MHL Trucking, who took a collection and presented the fire department with a $700 cheque the next day. The firefighters picked up the camper on Friday and deliv-

ered it to Kustom Koach in Aldergrove, where it underwent a complete inspection, at no charge. Kustom Koach checked that there were no propane gas leaks, re-sealed the roof with silicone caulking and replaced the mattress with a new one. To dispose of the burnt-out camper, a roll-off bin and disposal services were donated by Emterra Environmental. And the firefighters went shopping for groceries and other goods which were placed inside the new camper, for its delivery on Saturday. Extra Foods and Save-on Foods both donated, along with Bosley’s Pet Food Plus, which contributed a coat and food for the dog. Laing had also lost his bicycle in the fire, as it had been leaned up against the camper and the rubber and plastic parts had all melted. Vinette said Laing thought he could restore the

bike but another firefighter, Louie Maragianlo, bought Laing a new bike and helmet. Vinette said fire fighters also replaced the back window of the truck, which had blown out from the heat. “The truck just needs a new set of glow plugs and he can keep on trucking, when he gets back on his feet financially,” said Vinette. And so at 1 p.m., Saturday, firefighters delivered the new camper and goods to Laing. Laing beamed in appreciation as firefighters lowered the camper on the back of his truck, filled with all the food and goods. The community kindness hasn’t stopped there either. “I’m still getting calls,” said Shaw. “Just today (Monday) the veterinarian on Fraser Highway called to say he’d heard about it and offered to provide assistance to the dog.”

The Langley Bypass will be closed late Saturday night (Dec. 22) to allow construction workers to install the steel girders that will carry 196 Street traffic over the busy road. Ken Zondervan, design and construction manager for the City of Surrey, said the shutdown should only last a few hours. It’s another milestone for the project, part of the Roberts Banks Rail Corridor project. The 196 Street overpass is part of the “combo” project, which involves three overpasses and new roads. They are designed to speed train traffic to and from the Delta container cargo port and reduce traffic congestion. The Bypass crossing comes less than two weeks after the overpass girders went across the nearby railway tracks on Dec. 11. That took about two hours, Zondervan said. Work on the different elements of the overpass is on or “slightly ahead” of schedule, he said. Three new overpasses and several new roads are being built as part of the project. The other two overpasses will cross the tracks at 192 Street and 54 Avenue. There will also be traffic lights at 196 Street and 60 Avenue and 196 Street and 64 Avenue, as part of the overall project.

as parenting groups. There are 12 beds there. “Often, women come from the North and drop everything to be here so they come with nothing,” she said. Pederson was overwhelmed that people would want to help someone they didn’t know. “I really can’t thank everyone enough. This means so much,” she said. She also couldn’t believe she “was worthy enough of a story” to make it into the newspaper. “I framed the story and put it on my wall and I have a framed article to put on the wall at Fir Square too,” she said.

Langley residents did it again. A call from Langley resident Jaime Pederson to help lift the spirits of pregnant women taking part in the B.C. Women’s Fir Square program has been answered. Parenting magazines, DVDs, books, maternity and women’s clothing, baby clothing, nursing pillow, baby toys, blankets and cards of encouragement came in to the Langley Times office, even through sleet and snow. Pederson credits the Vancouver hospital’s program for “helping me turn my life around.” When she arrived at Fir Square’s centre, she was newly out of jail, pregnant and addicted to drugs. “When I went in there I had nothing,” Pederson said. Now she is clean and raising her happy, healthy two-year-old daughter. But Pederson has little

Two young men walking to the 7-Eleven in Brookswood stumbled upon a man suffering from multiple stab wounds yesterday (Wednesday) morning. Around 6 a.m., Langley RCMP and ambulance arrived at 200 Street and 37 Avenue to take the man to hospital where his injuries are serious but not life-threatening, said Cpl. Holly Marks. “He is not co-operating with police so we aren’t certain where this offence took place,” said Marks. The man is known to police, she said. Police continue to investigate.

The City of Langley’s new organic green waste recycling program has not yet begun and already the municipality is receiving a bit of backlash from the community. Residents’ main concern seems to be the reduction in garbage pick-up from once a week to once every two weeks, with a limit of two cans per household. “We’ve already had complaints from people not liking the change,” said Mayor Peter Fassbender. “People think it’s a given they should have two garbage cans a week.” However, if households are recycling properly, they shouldn’t be producing that much trash, he noted. Under the new schedule, organic waste, which includes everything from meat and vegetable waste to soiled paper products — the items most likely to generate unpleasant smells — will be picked up every week, with no limit on the number of containers produced by a single household. Councillor Dave Hall asked staff whether there is a plan in place to handle situations

he Missing Women Inquiry, chaired by former judge and attorneygeneral Wally Oppal, was an exercise in wasted opportunities. The inquiry report, made public on Monday, tells the public almost nothing new about the sad case of the dozens of missing women from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Many of them were murdered by Robert Willie Pickton, but he has only been convicted in six murders. Twenty other charges against him were stayed, ironically under Oppal’s watch as B.C.’s attorney-general. The inquiry itself became quickly bogged down with far too many lawyers representing police officers, current and retired, at taxpayers’ expense. The police officers had nothing to fear from any testimony. None of them have been disciplined in any way. The actual victims received minimal attention throughout much of the inquiry, although Oppal tried to make up for it with the title of his report, Forsaken, and some expressions of sympathy at his Monday news conference. This is not a knock at him personally — he is a compassionate man — but the inquiry was flawed from the start, with limited terms of reference and insistence that police be represented by legions of lawyers, who proceeded to take control of the proceedings and bill to their hearts’ content. They slowed it to such a degree that Oppal needed time extensions and had to rush some testimony. One recommendation of Oppal’s receiving some attention is one he’s pushed before — a regional police force. He came up with that in the 1990s while he was still a judge, and was heading up an inquiry into policing called by the NDP government of the day. Unfortunately, there is little in the way of concrete evidence that, had a regional police force been in place, Pickton would have been caught sooner. Police let him slip from their grasp once, and he returned to his killing spree. As Oppal observes, the women of the Downtown Eastside were of little worth in the eyes of police and most members of society, and police didn’t overly concern themselves with those who went missing. If there was a regional police force at the time, how would that have been different? Oppal assumes there would be no turf and jurisdictional wars within a regional force, which is naive in the extreme. This inquiry was launched with great fanfare by Premier Christy Clark, as proof that she was doing things differently. It has ended with a thud.

t’s an unimaginable pain. Only those who have lost someone so close can even hope to relate. Even then, the innocence of six- and seven-yearold children being stolen away in a moment of madness is impossible to fully comprehend. This past weekend, communities across the United States were in mourning. As our neighbours to the south attempt to come to grips with the horrendous tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut, we grieve with them. The mass shooting that stole the lives of 20 children and six adults is one of those rare moments that shakes society in its entirety. Even if you don’t want to think about it, you do. It makes us ask questions at a time when answers are not even possible. It forces us to acknowledge that evil exists. American society — and the way it deals with guns in particular — may allow Canadians to say: “It could never happen here.” But to pass it off as their problem is a mistake. Violence and how we treat those who need help are not unique to the U.S. It’s our problem too. The impact of this tragedy will not wane anytime soon, nor should it. Those who have children will continue to hug their little ones much tighter in the days to come. We should all treat each other with an extra level of kindness, regardless of how different they may seem. As painful as it is, the opportunity to discuss issues coming out of this latest act of violence is important. And try as we might to find answers, we will ultimately fail. The headline in the Sunday edition of Stockton, California’s The Record provides the truth of this moment: “Sadness the only certainty.” — Nelson Star (Black Press)

Editor: I wanted to highlight some of the wonderful people that we have in Langley. My husband and I were volunteering for the Salvation Army Christmas kettles this past Saturday in Walnut Grove. Three excited girls ran up to us with the biggest smiles. These girls were holding two bags full of money which they had collected. “It’s $107.56,” they proudly stated. They told us that they went carolling for an entire day to collect the money, and they had been looking for the Salvation Army kettles to donate the money to. They took turns putting the money in the kettles. I gave them each a high five, and away they went. About half an hour later, they came back and asked if they could sing Christmas carols to us, and they began singing. They sang for awhile and had to leave when their dad came back to pick them up. Much of the money raised by the Salvation Army in this campaign in Langley goes directly to the Gateway of Hope, which provides a range of services to the community, including shelter for homeless people, free meals and a variety of training opportunities and programs to help people get back on their feet. Thank you to all who have donated to the kettles and to the hundreds of volunteers who have helped with this year’s campaign.

Parents grateful for quick responses after crash Editor: On behalf of my husband and I, we want to extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation to all the first responders and emergency personnel that came to the aid of our daughter Dayna, after a very serious car accident in the late afternoon on Saturday, Dec. 15. She was on her way to the Superstore in Langley and was driving on 192 Street just north of 32 Avenue, when she lost control of the car after hitting a pothole filled with water and rolled the car into the ditch. The events leading to the crash were a

combination of a narrow dark street and bad weather conditions. A big thanks to the driver who was behind her. We were told this driver was an off-duty emergency technician, who stopped to assist at the scene before the emergency personnel arrived. We also want to thank RCMP Const. Eric Wilson, who contacted me by phone while on scene and performed in a very professional and compassionate manner as I was starting to panic. He kept reassuring me that our daughter was in the best of medi-

cal care. Lastly, we also give our sincere thanks to all the medical staff at Royal Columbia Hospital in New Westminster for the excellent care for our daughter. Our best Christmas gift this year is that Dayna, our daughter, is healthy, alive and did not suffer serious bodily injury. We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and all the best wishes for 2013. Editor: As we lament over the loss of 26 innocent lives in Newtown, Connecticut, as well as other deaths throughout the world, it is easy to blame our violence-obsessed cultures that permeate most populations. We need only pay attention to international news to learn of all the bloodshed and carnage, the tragic suicides at home due to bullying, and the gang violence due to drug wars, to recognize that violence and death seem ubiquitous. We can attribute this to the availability of guns, the breakdown of societies, the violence in video games, films and music, and a general insensitivity to the value of life itself. But I would like to propose that we examine our own desensitization of death in our everyday actions, something as innocuous as our eating habits. Ninety-nine percent of the human population consumes meat and dairy in varying degrees every day, several times a day. How can we as a species expect peace in the world when our very existence is

directly responsible for egregious violence committed against innocent beings to the tune of 64 billion farmed land animals worldwide per year, and one to three trillion sea animals annually? We are responsible for the confinement, enslavement, exploitation, torture, rape, inhumane living conditions and deaths of 64 billion land animals per year — and that’s just in the name of food. There are also animal beings we exploit, torture, and subject to abject misery in the name of fur, scientific experimentation, entertainment, and vivisection. The majority of land farmed animals we eat are still babies, killed in the early weeks or months of their natural life spans of one to two decades. The less than one percent of vegans worldwide are extreme — but only in the sense that we are extremely reverent of life regardless of the species. We believe that all species have the same inherent right to live their own lives on this earth we all share, without being exploited by humans.

How can we expect peace on earth when humans inflict such unnecessary violence routinely on other innocent beings every time we consume meat and dairy? Particularly in this season of ‘Peace on Earth,’ regularly and sincerely expressed by those who profess this through their religious affiliations, I would urge all to reflect upon the most basic of our actions in order to change society’s values from the inside — from within each individual human being. If we put ourselves for a moment in the animals’ perspective — those animals raised in Holocaust-like environments to simply please our palettes and killed so violently and inhumanely, we can see how the human species can be construed as the most evil of all enemies. But we have the ability to create true and lasting peace in the world — and that change begins with each of us. Let me suggest that peace begins on our plates. Patricia Tallman, Langley

Dubious benefit Editor: While I consider Trinity Western University a welcome part of our community, TWU is in fact a private institution and business — not in any way a public facility. I am astounded that the Township would make this magnitude of commitment (University District) to this private enterprise/institution in the first place. To press ahead in light of previous regional commitments, as well as basic planning common sense, is without clear explanation or defence. I am therefore very opposed to the current plan for the University District as proposed in this amendment. I would also like to add my voice to those opposed to the Wall property being excluded from previous regional planning commitments. I am also very opposed to allowing the removal of this property from the Agricultural Land Reserve on any basis, including what I consider to be a dubious commitment to downstream benefits to agriculture. Poems on trees

Editor: An installation of tree poems by local poets, students, award-winning and established poets, emerging poets, and children from all across Canada is now on display in the forest known as McLellan Forest East in Glen Valley. The Poet Laureate of Canada, Fred Wah, has just added a poem to the mix. The poems will be suspended from the trees throughout the holiday season. This is one of a series of arts initiatives to raise awareness about the possible future sale of McLellan Forest East, on 257A Street just north of 84 Avenue. The public is welcome to come enjoy a stroll through the forest while taking in the images and reflections of poets. She was one of 100 sick children on Air Transat and Children’s Wish Foundation Flight 1204, flying on a very special mission to bring Santa back to Vancouver. For the seventh year, Air Transat and the Children’s Wish Foundation have taken sick kids and their family members on a 60-minute flight full of Christmas excitement and magic. In total, 300 passengers got on board, including family, children and special elves to help the children. Sometime into the flight Santa made a surprise appearance and handed out presents to the wide-eyed children. Along with impromptu singing of Christmas carols, fun was had by all, said Foundation representatives. Air Transat also gave $780,000 to the Foundation. That donation represents two years worth of money collected from Air Transat’s Small Change, Big Hearts program. Each year, thousands of Canadian children between the ages of three and 17 are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Children’s Wish Foundation grants more than 19,000 wishes to help these children, with help from many individuals and businesses.

Purloined jewelry dates back to 1905 Langley RCMP is once again seeking the public’s assistance in recovering some sentimental property, including jewelry dating back more than 100 years, stolen during a home robbery in October. A home, in the 4900 block of 232 Street, was broken into on the afternoon of Oct. 8. The thief or thieves gained access through the back door, which had been pried open, said Langley RCMP. Of particular note in the jewelry box was a woman’s 14 karat gold ring, approximately half inch wide with four rows of four diamonds each, a nine karat gold frame locket pendant with a screw top containing the photograph of a baby and a nine karat rose gold pendant with red, yellow and green stones on a fine chain. Several of the jewelry pieces belonged to the victim’s great grandmother and date as far back as 1905, said police. A stolen pink laptop contained all the family’s photos. To make matters worse, the photographs were backed up on USB drives that were stolen as well. 2012 Coats for Kids campaign a success By Kerry Vital

The Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association is proud to announce that this year’s annual Coats for Kids campaign was a resounding success. “We brought in around 3,300 items,” says GVHBA CEO Bob de Wit. “That’s about 10 per cent more than last year.” Among the items collected were jackets, scarves, toys and blankets, all of which will be donated to the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau. “It was a great year,” says de Wit. “There were so many community members getting involved, including schools and hockey teams.” Next year, de Wit wants to collect 4,000 items. “We are really happy to be part of it,” he says. “It’s really gratifying ... to know that we’re helping.” The Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau is run by executive

director Chris Bayliss, who de Wit compares to Santa Claus. “During their busy season, he’s there working 20 hours a day,” de Wit says, adding, “It’s a labour of love for him and his staff.”

The Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association has a busy calendar for the year ahead, with events for homeowners, builders and other real estate professionals. The BC Home & Garden Show will take place on Feb. 20 to 24 at BC Place. The GVHBA is a partner in the event and presents the Renovation Gallery that showcases before and after photos of professional renovations. The show features local experts in all aspects of home ownership, from renovation to organization, appearances by HGTV celebrities and tons of tips for outdoor living

and gardening. The GVHBA Ovation Awards will be handed out on April 20 at a gala awards dinner. The awards honour the best of the best in newhome construction, renovation and design in the Lower Mainland. The finalists will be announced on Feb. 6. The GVHBA will hand out the People’s Choice Award for the first time, giving the public a chance to vote for their favourite new or renovated project. The annual First-Time Home Buyer Seminar will be presented on March 19. The seminar gives prospective buyers a chance learn from experts on all aspects of the home-buying process. Builders and suppliers are in attendance beforehand to allow you to ask questions. The seminar is

the largest of its kind in North America, and is always wellattended. The GVHBA will also hold its annual Spring Renovation Seminar in May, with the date to be announced. The event is free (though pre-registration is required), and features renovators, designers and suppliers who will guide homeowners through every step of the renovation process. The Parade of Renovated Homes will take place on June 9. The public will be invited to tour professionally renovated homes in the Metro Vancouver area. Evan Campbell was in the holiday spirit on Friday night, following the Christmas mantra that it is better to give than to receive. Rather than shooting the puck, Campbell passed off repeatedly, picking up six assists as both his line mates — James Robinson and Mario Puskarich registered hat tricks — in a 8-3 Langley Rivermen victory over the visiting Coquitlam Express. Robinson and Puskarich also had three assists as the trio finished with 18 points. The BCHL junior A hockey game was played at the Langley Events Centre. And according to Campbell, the game didn’t even begin all that great for his line. “We were struggling at the start, the first 10 minutes of the game,” he said. “Then near the end of the first, things started to open up and everything began going our way. “It was just the way the game unfolded; it seems like every

time we were on the ice, we were making stuff happen. The bounces were working in our favour.” The Express’ John Siemer opened the scoring before Puskarich tied it up a few minutes later. And before the period let out, Robinson made it 2-1. Robinson and Matt Ustaski made it 4-1 before Philip Zielonka cut the lead in half prior to the third period. Robinson then capped off his hat trick 32 seconds into the final period. The Express’ Mitchell Fyffe made it 5-3 before Puskarich scored twice more — completing his hat trick — and then Trevor Cope rounded out the scoring. Robinson, Campbell and Puskarich swept the three star honours. Rivermen coach and general manager Bobby Henderson said it has been a long time since he has witnessed such a dominant showing by one line. “They took control of the game, it was pretty impressive,” he said. “They have been pretty good the past couple of weeks and capitalized on their opportunities and had a pretty good night.” For his part, Campbell said he has never had a game like this before, not even at the minor hockey level.

“This is probably the most points I have ever had in a game,” he said. The six assists are a new Rivermen record, but three shy of the BCHL single-game record of nine assists, which is shared by three players: Ernie Gare (Vernon, 1971), Ken Stroud (Merritt, 1977) and Duane Dennis (Vernon, 1989). “I did take a few shots, but mostly just passes to my line mates,” Campbell explained when asked if he was specifically looking to play set-up man on the night. He leads the team with 27 assists and is second in scoring with 35 points. Puskarich leads not only Langley, but the entire league, with 44 points. His 22 goals are also tops in the BCHL. The eight goals were also a season high for the team, which twice tallied seven times back in the season’s first month. The victory over the Express was the highlight of the weekend for Langley as they dropped a 6-3 decision to the Chilliwack Chiefs on Saturday night before skating to a 2-2 tie on Sunday afternoon against the Powell River Kings. Both games were also at the LEC. Overall, Henderson wasn’t too upset about only getting half of the available six points because

Junior girls champ to be decided at Belmont A championship tournament will be teeing off in Langley this summer. Belmont Golf Course has been tabbed the home of British Columbia Golf’s junior girls’ championship. The tournament will be contested from July 2 to 5.

It is open to any female golfer 18 and younger. Belmont Golf Course was one of 15 sites announced as a host as British Columbia Golf released its entire 2013 championship series schedule. “We are extremely excited for the upcoming 2013 champion-

Gators crush competition to take title The Walnut Grove Gators crushed the competition to take the title at the 2012 Gators Candy Cane Classic. The Gators senior boys basketball team defeated the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers 101-74 in Saturday’s championship final at Walnut Grove. Jadon Cohee earned player of the game honours. The Gators, led by player of the game David Wolde-Mariam, cruised through the semifinals 104-52 over the Centennial Centaurs. Walnut Grove also defeated the St. Thomas More Collegiate Knights 78-44 in the tournament opener. The Gators, ranked fourth in the provincial AAA polls, were scheduled to open the regular season last night (Wednesday) against Westview.

Program delivers holiday joy Envision Financial Angel Tree program benefits children, seniors in need For the third straight year, Envision Financial’s Angel Tree program will be delivering Christmas joy to hundreds of local families. The program brought in more than 1,300 gifts, 3,400 pounds of food and $15,000 to children and seniors in need. Locally, the donations were

distributed to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley. All 20 Envision Financial branches displayed a decorated Christmas tree with ornaments that represented a child, senior or food bank. Community members were invited to take an ornament from the tree and return it with a new and unwrapped gift or non-perishable food item. “We know from the tears, smiles, and hugs that these families are absolutely thrilled and grateful for the help they receive to make their families Christmas just a little better,” said Mary Reeves, executive

director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley. “To everyone that participated, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.” “We were overwhelmed by the support our Angel Tree program received from members of the community,” said Susan Byrom, manager of corporate citizenship at Envision Financial. “The response far surpassed last year’s total of 600 gifts. The students were part of PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs, a six week comprehensive educational program utilizing project-based learning techniques to support an early understanding of money man-
