Family comes together for Children’s By DIANE STRANDBERG Black Press
“How did this happen?” The question on Andrea Howarth’s blog cuts like a knife. One day the Port Coquitlam mom and her husband, Nick, are planning a trip to Disneyland with their two children — Clara, now six, and Brennan, who just turned four — and a few months later, they are plunged into a nightmare from which they are still recovering. As she doles out cupcakes for a treat to her little ones in her comfortable condo off Riverside Drive, it’s hard to believe the story Howarth is about to tell, yet, according to statistics, it’s a sadly common tale for hundreds of B.C. families. Last February, Clara, was struck down by a serious fever that turned out to be Strep A. Later, as the little girl’s body fought the illness, her blood work revealed an even stronger adversary: lymphoblastic leukemia. “It was very scary,” Howarth recalls. Flipping through a binder that logs Clara’s test results, prescriptions and hospital stays, she describes how Clara, then a kindergarten student at Blakeburn elementary, came home from her Sparks meeting with a headache. That turned into flu-like symptoms and a fever of 40 C. “She couldn’t hold anything down,” Howarth said, and with a mother’s instinct, she and husband Nick decided to make the trek to BC Children’s Hospital on Oak Street in Vancouver for some expert advice. They made the right decision. “We bypassed the lineup and were admitted into emergency right away,” she said. In the hospital’s intensive care unit, Clara was given round-theclock care by nurses and doctors who specialize in dealing with children and who patiently answered the Howarths’ litany of questions. Clara’s throat became so swollen with inflammation, she was hard to recognize and a tube had to be placed into her throat so she could take in fluids. Monitored day and night, Clara was kept under the watchful

It took several days for the eventual, shocking diagnosis, but by then, anxiety and exhaustion had begun to take its toll. The couple, well known in Port Coquitlam because they grew up here, fell asleep together in the tiny cot pushed up against Clara’s bed. “It was so tight, there was just no room,” Howarth said. A curtain
divider hung in her face but discomfort was a small price to pay to be near their little girl, who was fighting for her life. Thankfully, they had great support from the staff at BCCH, and their close-knit family, friends and colleagues. Howarth’s parents even cut short a cruise to be with their daughter and Nick, a police officer, was able to get time off work. The diagnosis, when it came about eight days after Clara was admitted, was hard to take. “We were just devastated,” said
Howarth. With leukemia confirmed through bone marrow testing, the family exchanged one cramped room in ICU to another in the oncology ward and Clara began chemotherapy treatments. She started to get better and the Howarths began to look around and see other families going through the same ordeal. One day, they brought a cooler of food because chemotherapy treatments affect children’s sense of taste and they wanted to bring her special
treats. They looked into the ward fridge, Howarth said, and there was no room. “We didn’t realize so many families were living there.” In fact, childhood cancer is surprisingly common, with approximately 850 Canadian children expected to develop cancer this year —100 of them newly diagnosed in B.C. All of the British Columbia cases will end up at BC Children’s, where staff are experienced in dealing with the special needs of children and research is being conducted into new therapies. “I can’t say enough about the staff. They are amazing and they’ve become our friends,” Howarth now says, with some relief. After several weeks of treatment, Clara returned home in the spring and, although extremely weak and with the trademark hair loss, finished kindergarten and is now back at school in Grade 1. Her cancer is in remission, although she still has to receive treatments that are extremely hard on her body. The long-planned trip to Disneyland that would have taken place this fall was cancelled but Howarth is thankful her daughter is doing so well. In fact, she has become a BC Children’s Hospital booster and is supportive of a $200-million capital campaign to replace the aging facilities with a new hospital that will be much more comfortable for families and more efficient for staff. Recently, she toured a mock-up of the new design and can’t say enough about it. “There are families who have to live there and they need this.” Plans call for larger rooms, the consolidation of oncology services on one floor, instead of three, as they are now, dedicated lounge areas and larger shared facilities, including a kitchen. The improvements will be a benefit, she agrees, but for now, being home with her children every day and seeing Clara’s health improve is all Howarth really needs. That trip to Disneyland can wait. Aldergrove Rotary Club gets into spirit of the season By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
The Rotary Club of Aldergrove has been busy spreading the holiday cheer over the festive season. Rotarians have spent over 224 hours manning the Salvation Army kettles at Otter Co-op and
Murrayville IGA, with all the funds raised here in support of the Gateway of Hope shelter for the homeless in Langley. The club also sponsored three Aldergrove families, providing full hampers to make their Christmas more special for each family.
Christmas can be a challenging time for many local families and the comfort of supportiung those in need always rings true with the Rotary Club. Also on Wednesday, Dec. 19, the Rotarians presented two cheques to support local school initiatives.
A cheque for $500 was presented to Diane Saumier, a special education teacher at Aldergrove Secondary School, to provide food snacks and supplies to students who often come to school without breakfast and the necessities to have a productive and functional school day.
The second cheque was presented to the Betty Gilbert Middle School outdoor education program. The $200 will support two or three students who require financial support to afford this wondeerful recreational opportunity, coming up in late spring of 2013.
Sentencing hearing for man who tried to strangle driver in Surrey, stabbed passenger in Aldergrove By DAN FERGUSON Black Press
Steven Fayant told a psychiatrist that he stabbed a Coast Mountain bus passenger because he thought the man was laughing at him and he choked a Coast Mountain bus driver because he didn’t like the way the man was driving. The results of a courtordered psychiatric interview of the 20-year-old Surrey resident was read out in Surrey Provincial Court during Fayant’s sentencing hearing Thursday morning. Fayant, a gaunt, pale man with close-cropped hair and a goatee, sat impassively in the prisoner’s docket as both the Crown prosecutor and his own lawyer said both attacks were completely unprovoked and irrational. Crown counsel Angela Lee said Fayant talked his way into a free ride on both transit buses by pleading poverty. On Feb. 18, he got on the bus near 76 Avenue and King George Blvd. and told the driver he didn’t have enough for the fare. “I’m kind of hurting,” Fayant is quoted as saying. Not long afterwards, the on-board bus security video recorded Fayant lunging at the driver and grabbing him around the throat. The driver suffered a small
nick to his neck, likely from a fingernail. Fayant quickly fled the scene on foot. He later told a psychiatrist that he tried to choke the driver because he didn’t like the way the man was driving the bus. On Feb. 21, Fayant stabbed a 41-year-old man in the back after both men got off a Coast Mountain bus near Aldergrove Centre Mall. The injured man suffered a lacerated kidney and was unable to work for three months. Fayant told the psychiatrist he believed two men sitting near him on the bus were laughing at him and were somehow connected to an 2010 incident where he was abducted and beaten over a drug debt. In fact the victim has just moved to B.C. from Ontario and was talking with his brother. Neither knew Fayant. The psychiatric assessment rates Fayant as a high to highto-moderate risk for violent behavior but there was “no suggestion of a serous mental disorder,” prosecutor Lee said. The assessment did suggest Fayant may have been suffering from post-traumatic stress and possibly drug-induced psychosis.
Fayant has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in the stabbing and common assault in the choking incident. The Crown said given the “very serious” and unprovoked nature of the attacks, Fayant should be sentenced to three years in prison. “These are very serious assaults on strangers,” Lee said. She also asked the judge to ban Fayant from riding transit buses after he is released from prison, saying it was a request of the Coast Mountain company. Defence lawyer David Payne said his client clearly has mental health issues, but has refused to allow his lawyer to have him declared mentally incompetent for fear of being permanently committed to an institution. Payne said Fayant’s behaviour immediately after his arrest was “bizarre” describing how his client would stand stationary in his cell for several hours at a time, just inches away from a window. “We are dealing with someone who has mental health issues,” Payne said. After the 2010 abduction attack, Payne said Fayant’s already fragile mental condition worsened. “His paranoia was off the charts,” Payne said. The lawyer said once the
imprisoned Fayant was sent to a psychiatric facility and medicated, his condition improved. But Fayant has been returned to the general prison population and no longer medicated, Payne said, and his condition is deteriorating. He proposed a sentence that, with credit for time served, would see Fayant freed in about two months to undergo compulsory treatment. The hearing was attended by Fayant’s mother and father, the driver he attacked and representatives of the bus company. Fayant’s parents did not want to give their names or to be interviewed, but the mother could be heard outside court expressing concern about the fate of her son in the regular prison population. She said she would prefer to see him get treatment. “He’s still savable,” she said. The driver also declined to give his name. He told reporters that the incident has left him apprehensive, to the point where he avoids making eye contact with passengers as they board to avoid a repeat of the surprise assault he endured. “It was so shocking and so SUBMITTED PHOTO sudden,” the driver said. Schools trash old ideas about garbage By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star
Langley School District is hoping to be the first in Lower Mainland, if not B.C., to have every school recycling organic waste as well every other kind of recyclables. It’s going to be a huge switch over for both students and teachers, as garbage cans in classrooms will be removed. Students will have to
get rid of their waste in a green bin for food scraps and organic waste, a blue bin for recyclables, and a black bin for everything else. The bins will be placed in the hallways. The program falls on the heels of a successful pilot project at Walnut Grove Secondary and Fort Langley Elementary last year. WGSS was initially chosen for the pilot

tary location due to its proximity to Walnut Grove Secondary. “I feel pretty proud that something that we started here at our local school is now affecting people all over our District and changing things for the better,” said WGSS student River Leuba, who was a part of the original group who lobbied for the program. Some Township staff went “dumpster diving” at WGSS and did a waste analysis. “Seventy per cent of our waste can be reduced by recycling,” said Debby Sansome, the school district’s director of environment. The change means students will be expected to throw their food waste, muffin wrappers, fruit peels, napkins, paper plates and pencil shavings into organic waste bins. Trustees questioned about the smell and bugs that usually come with organic bins. Sansome said the bin will be taken away every two days. She also pointed out that putting a couple paper towels on top of the organic waste absorbs the odour. To get everyone on board, schools will be asked to create Green Teams. This program will be implemented over time this school year, said the district. Already 12 schools have asked to be trained in bringing in the bins. With tipping fees for waste collection set to escalate in the near future, Sansome said the program will avoid future increases in district costs through the diversion of waste while educating our students in environmental awareness.

embarked on a $200-million capital campaign towards the construction of a $683-million hospital expected to open in 2018. • BC Children’s is the main provincial resource for children with cancer; any child in B.C. who is suspected of having cancer is sent to BCCH for diagnosis. • Between 100 and 150 children are diagnosed with cancer annually in B.C., and at any given time BCCH has about 800 children in active treatment. • In 2011, 8,969 children and teens visited the oncology/hematology and bone marrow transplant clinics at BCCH. CHILD HEALTH BC IMPROVES CARE ACROSS PROVINCE A quarter of the B.C. Children’s Hospital fundraising campaign – $50 million – will be earmarked to Child Health BC. It’s a hospital initiative to improve pediatric facilities across B.C. and help improve the standard of care delivered to kids in regions outside the Lower Mainland. Pediatric clinics have been built using the fund’s money at hospitals in Nanaimo and Prince George, as well as an audiology clinic in Prince Rupert and a telehealth facility in Vernon. A higher, more consistent level of care in more remote corners of B.C. reduces the time, cost and hassle families have to endure travelling to the Lower Mainland. more welcoming and comforting to families enduring the worst and most terrifying moments of their lives. It’s critical to meet those emotional needs – not just the medical ones. “The stress families feel is intense,” he said, adding hospital staff feel it too. “Not only are you dealing with a child who is ill, you are dealing with parents of that child who would literally give their lives if they could to save the child.” Forgacs said the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation has raised $155 million over the past four years toward its $200-million target through tremendous grassroots support as well as support from major donors. High-profile donations have come from Vancouver Canucks Daniel and Henrik Sedin and singer Michael Bublé. The biggest contributions have been $25 million from Teck Resources and $20 million from the Overwaitea Food Group. Just as honourable, Forgacs said, is the support from parents whose kids have been through the hospital but who perhaps can afford only to volunteer or simply share their stories. “They look for ways to express their gratitude,” Forgacs said. “For many of them I think it’s almost thereapeutic to remain involved with the hospital.” Forgacs said the foundation is now hoping more donors will step forward to raise the remaining $45 million. “We’re appealing to British Columbians in every income bracket to help us complete the campaign.” FAST FACTS: • BC Children’s Hospital has

Kids fighting cancer will be among the prime beneficiaries of plans to rebuild B.C. Children’s Hospital starting in 2014. The $683-million project will roughly double the amount of space in the hospital and it will also reconfigure the pediatric oncology department, now inconveniently spread out over three floors, onto one much more efficient level. “It will provide much greater continuity of care,” said Stephen Forgacs, spokesman for B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation. The foundation is helping support the new hospital – to open in 2018 – with a $200-million fundraising campaign and Forgacs said the new design is centred around the needs of families. “We’re building exclusively private rooms in the new hospital,” Forgacs said. “There will be no more open ward.” Those private rooms will have their own bathrooms, fold-out beds and wardrobes to accommodate parents who want to stay overnight with their sick, frightened kid. Also planned are kitchen facilities for families, office space for parents needing to keep up with work duties and wifi access everywhere. “In any hospital room you’ll be able to get online, which is great for parents who are away from work,” Forgacs said, adding it also helps kids beat boredom with video games and connect online with friends. Besides improving privacy and infection control, there are advantages to letting parents stay in a private room. They can comfort their child and they know so much about treatment protocols, they’re essentially experts who help back up staff. Medical technology has evolved by leaps and bounds since B.C. Children’s Hospital opened in 1982, when personal computers were a novelty. Diagnostic scanning is light years ahead and minimally invasive medical procedures allow much more use of day surgery rather than overnight stays. The new hospital will be much better designed with all technology needs in mind. Demand has also soared over the years and not just due to B.C.’s growing population. Kids whose conditions meant a death sentence in the 1980s are surviving in much greater numbers – the pediatric cancer survival rate is up to 80 per cent from 20 then. And others who once died young from chronic conditions like cystic fibrosis now routinely live into their 40s. It all means a hospital that was at capacity the day it opened 30 years ago is now bursting at the seams. Forgacs said myriad improvements will make the new hospital

VICTORIA – NDP leader Adrian Dix has completed year-end interviews with members of the legislative press gallery. Here are highlights from my discussion with him. TF: On the Kinder Morgan oil pipeline expansion proposal, federal NDP leader Tom Mulcair says the federal environmental process would have to be strengthened before a project like that could get a thorough enough hearing. Do you agree? AD: The B.C. Liberal government has signed an equivalency agreement that says that the federal decision is the provincial decision on these projects. If it applies to Enbridge Northern Gateway, presumably the B.C. Liberals would apply it to Kinder Morgan. They could have done a joint process, where [the final decision] would have gone to both cabinets. They chose instead to give up jurisdiction. They were so afraid of making any decision on Northern Gateway that they sent it over to the federal government. So what we’ve said is within a week of coming to office, we would end that equivalency agreement, and British Columbia would make decisions about both Enbridge Northern Gateway, which applied in May 2010, and any other pipeline, including the Kinder Morgan proposal, for which no application has been made. Obviously it would have

been desirable for everyone had they chosen a true joint review, as they have in Site C [dam proposed for Peace River], as they did with Kemess North [rejected mine expansion proposal] and other cases. TF: You don’t want duplicated review processes here, you just want a provincial cabinet say in the decision? AD: That’s right. TF: On your relationship with the B.C. Federation of Labour, your caucus is considering a proposal that B.C. should once again do away with secret ballots for union certification. AD: The B.C. Fed makes a case to the government on a series of issues on employment standards every year. Labour law, every year. WorkSafeBC, every year. Trades and training, every year. With respect to [accepting signed union cards for certification], it is a democratic process that the Newfoundland Conservative government just put into place a few months ago. So it’s a proposal from the labour movement and we’re looking at it. For most of B.C.’s modern history, since World War II, we’ve had that card-check system in place. The question would be whether [returning to that system] is a priority for this term in government. TF: So those kinds of things will be made clear in your platform?
AD: Absolutely. TF: You picked up some serious money from the business community at a fundraiser in October. Is that some kind of a record for the NDP? AD: [Laughs.] It might be a record, I don’t know. I think the business fundraiser we did at the Hotel Vancouver netted $350,000. I think what it reflects is, this year I’ve had about 230 meetings with the business community. The purpose of it has been principally to build understanding, particularly on issues of skills training. With the priority I give to skills training, I think I’m much more attuned to their concerns than the government has been. TF: I suppose that kind of success in fundraising might make it more difficult to follow through with your pledge to ban corporate and union donations. AD: I don’t think so. The B.C. Liberal Party has a very high level of corporate donations as a percentage of its total. We’re overwhelmingly dependent on individual donations. We get support from unions, but it’s not even close to what people would think. TF: So you’ll campaign for that, as you have before? AD: Yes. Editor: I am sick and tired of hearing about RV parking issues and people whining about it. Al Balogh stated an uninteresting, redundant argument depicting Langley’s Bylaw Enforcement Officers as ‘Grinch’ visits Langley, Dec. 20. Nothing new here, just another selfinvolved RV owner who thinks his rights should come before his own neighbours and safety. It is really sad when so many go without such luxuries, or even food on the table, that he puts his “Recreational Vehicle” above law and without perspective. If he can afford a RV, he can afford to store it properly. He goes on to attack and belittle the “goofy bylaw” including Council and those who approve of it, like me and the better part of Langley. He claims hardship because of a fine that is an infinitesimal percentage of most RV’s values. This while some people are forced to live in an RV, a car or on the streets. “Emergency Shelter” — are you kidding me? Excuses, excuses! If it is a Emergency Shelter, use it as one and offer shelter to those in need. Here is my solution to anyone owning a luxury RV? Shut up. Pay your fines. Put the RV where it belongs, sell it, move to some fairytale place that doesn’t have laws, but please stop wasting everyone’s time with your bellyaching. Al Balogh is the ‘Grinch’ rehashing this again and falsely claiming hardship. How many times would you have the council waste their time on this? Especially at their gluttonous, self-awarded wages! Don’t even get me started on that! Suck it up buttercup! D. Quiring, Aldergrove
How soon we forget? Editor: I was shocked Nov. 27 when I saw a car, parked in downtown Aldergrove, covered with large German Nazi Iron Cross decals, a Messerschmitt fighter plane hanging from the rear view mirror and a vanity plate that read STUKA (a WWII German Dive Bomber). I am a veteran of the Second World War and was stationed in Europe, fighting against the Nazi party for the rights and freedoms of Canadian citizens. This car was an insult to my sacrifices! Since Remembrance Day has just recently past, I am appalled at how soon they forget. Tom Justice, Aldergrove
Protect water, farmland
Editor: With all the well-articulated and compelling arguments against developing the Wall property that were made in January, I am very disappointed that this issue is coming before Langley Township council yet again. There are many reasons to reject the proposal. As council members know, there is an urgent need to protect our sources of water, arable land and green spaces. I recognize that council members feel obliged to represent developers, as well as members of the public. However, if council says yes to this development, it will be much harder to say no when other under-utilized agricultural properties come up for similar consideration. The land being offered up for the endowment in this proposal can’t be used for farming or housing. The owner of the property should see this riparian zone, as many owners all along the Salmon River do, as valuable fish and wildlife habitat, not a bargaining chip. I urge council members to adhere to Metro Vancouver’s Regional Growth Strategy and reject this spot-zoning application. It is difficult, but important, to think in the long term. The Township deserves great respect for the vital role it will play in feeding the citizens of Metro Vancouver in the near future. We will be the bread basket of the Lower Mainland. Vancouverites will have to appreciate the thoughtful council members in the Township of Langley who stood up to developers’ pressure, in favour of protecting our food sources and green spaces. Sgt. Robert Hartley has just completed work on a book documenting the history of the Royal Westminster Regiment, which will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2013. 21. He was buried in Fraser Cemetery. The regiment had different names over the years, with it being broken into the 47th and 131st Battalions during the First World War. At that time, 6,500 were sent from New Westminster and the Fraser Valley to participate in a campaign fought mostly in the trenches which took a heavy toll. Harley says the 47th Battalion lost 988 members, and that doesn’t count the men who were sent to other units after signing up at the New Westminster recruiting depot. “Most of the casualties came in the last 100 days of the war,” says Harley. That’s because the Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders spearheaded the last actions in taking down the Germans “and were taking the brunt of the war,” says Harley. In contrast, more than 4,200 Westminster Regiment men served in the Second World War with 134 killed in action. ‘ALWAYS A WESTIE’ The regiment, which stretches up to Boston Bar, has never had a problem finding recruits and is one of the largest in the province. In fact, it’s about to move its Aldergrove branch to Chilliwack so it can be expanded. “It’s for the friendships you make, the buddies you have here,” says Harley. “Once a Westie, always a Westie.” He recalls meeting a Westie who served in the Second World War at a banquet in Edmonton. “He talked with me for hours.
There’s just always having that connection.” One of the Westminster Regiment’s commanders, Donald Stanley Montgomery, was the older brother of Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery, one of Britain’s leaders during the Second World War. The museum’s memorabilia includes a tunic donated by ‘Monty.’ Capt. Joe Burr, the grandfather of New Westminster native Raymond Burr, the Perry Mason and Ironside star, was an early Westie in the late 1800s. A favourite display of Harley’s in the museum is the seven medals, including one for bravery, given to Roger C. McDonald, who fibbed about his age and signed up for service in the First World War when he was 17. More than 20 years later, during the Second World War, McDonald lied about his age to authorities again, this time he was claiming he was younger. RESTORATION PIECE Terry Leith, 70, is the new president of the Royal Westminster Regiment Historical Society, taking over from retired Gen. Herb Hamm, who is 82. While Leith helped Harley, he’s been concentrating on another anniversary project. The society recently bought a bren gun armoured personnel carrier from a Vancouver Island military collector. It is currently being restored, along with a cannon, and will be put on a concrete pad for display outside the barracks. The armoury, says Harley, was built in 1895 and is the oldest
wooden free-standing military structure in Canada. There are a few tales hidden in its walls, including a few ghost stories, which even Leith gives credence to. “I’ve been in the building when I know I’m by myself and I hear people walking around upstairs. At first you think you’re hearing things because you know darn well you’re the only one in the building, but lots of guys have said the same thing,” says Leith. SHARING THE STORY So far $30,000 in book sales have been raised for the project. “I was confident from the get-go we were going to raise the money. We were hoping for more from larger organizations,” says Harley. The book is more than 320 pages with about 120 of them dedicated to embarkation lists of regiment members who participated in the Boer, First World War, Second World War and Afghanistan. Individual copies are $80 each with the price going up to $100 in January. There are also limited numbered editions available. They can be purchased through www.vivalogue.ca by going to the Regiment 150th button. The regiment’s museum is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Harley is more than willing to do tours at other times, often giving them to school classes, cubs and scouts, and other organizations because he never grows tired of the Westies’ story.

Sgt. Robert Harley probably heard his first war story while he was still in the cradle. The military is in his DNA. Harley comes from a long line of relatives with connections to the armed forces. Some won medals, including a great uncle, Cpl. Harry Garnet Miner, who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his brave actions that cost him his life during the final months of the First World War. Harley says one branch of his family lost all the men except one serving in the military. So it was natural for him to join the cadets when he was 12 and the Westminster Regiment when he was 17, which was 29 years ago. And it was natural for him to already be fascinated with its history. So fascinated, in fact, Harley has wanted to chronicle its past in book form for more than two decades. When he was put on the committee to develop ways to honour the regiment’s 150th anniversary in 2013, Harley pitched his idea. “This was my chance to jump in there and say let’s do a pictorial history of the regiment,” says Harley as he sits amidst the medals and memorabilia in the regiment’s armoury museum which he runs. Harley’s worked on For King and Country: 150 years of The Royal Westminster Regiment for nearly two years. He and retired Capt. Terry Leith sent the final scans to the printer Halloween night. “The vast majority has not been published before,” says Harley. “It was a huge project, but I love it. I have my own little museum at home.” HOW IT ALL BEGAN The volunteer regiment’s origins stem from a meeting at Hyack Hall on the evening of Nov. 11, 1863. Ten days later, Gov. James Douglas approved establishment of the New Westminster Rifle Company No. 1. At the time, New Westminster was the region’s capital and the prevailing sentiment was the area needed protection. Its first actual action was in the spring of 1865 up the coast at Bute Inlet where the regiment assisted the Northwest Mounted Police in stopping “raiding parties” by Chilcotin Indians against trappers and miners. The first regiment member to be killed in action was Arthur Timleck, who died in 1901 during the Boer War at the age of

mendation medals, The Star and the Victory medal, were issued to all ranks of the Canadian military who saw service during the First World War. The Star recovered is engraved with “R. HIGHRS” and the Victory medal is
engraved with “2374 PT. A. ALEXANDER R. HIGHRS.” Investigators have made inquiries with Veterans Affairs Canada and determined these medals are actually British, likely issued to a British Regiment, the Royal Highlanders who fought out of
Newfoundland during the war. Also recovered was a bag containing several dozen foreign coins. If you have any information that would assist in this regard, call Langley RCMP at 604-5323200.

Kodiaks roar to 7 straight wins By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
The Aldergrove Kodiaks are on a well-deserved Christmas break after a seven-game win streak that culminated with Wednesday’s defeat of one of the top teams in the league. The Kodiaks’ 3-2 win over Delta Ice Hawks on Dec. 19 puts the Kodiaks solidly in second place in the Harold Brittain conference, with 35 points after 29 games. The Kodiaks came out strong and disciplined in the first period at Aldergrove Arena, with a 2-0 lead to show for it. First period scorers were Tyson Solotki at 5:28, assisted by Kenny Prato and Kodi Schwarz, and 39 seconds
later it was Stephen Ryan scoring, assisted by Ryan Simpson. The Hawks notched the second period’s only goal and evened it up at 8:57 in the third, but Kodiak Roshen Jaswal scored the winner at 11:08 on a power play, assisted by Joshua Cronin. It was a nail-biter in the last few seconds as the Hawks had a man advantage and pulled their goalie but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Kodiaks. Jaswal earned the game’s first star and third star went to keeper Mark Menicucci. The Kodiaks outshot the Hawks 51-40. The Kodiaks’ next game is at home against the North Vancouver Wolf Pack, Wednesday, Jan. 2 at 7:15 p.m.
