KTW catches up with people and stories of days gone by By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
Since leaving his post at the helm of the city of Kamloops, Randy Diehl has been taking time to enjoy the little things in life. A good book, a stroll in the middle of the day or the company of a 29-pound Honduran rescue dog named Olive, who has become the for-
Diehl maintaining connection to career mer chief administrative officer’s constant companion in retired life. “My daughter found her as a pup and brought her home and she’s still travelling, so I’m the new owner of the dog,” Diehl
says, noting a knee surgery Olive underwent a few months ago has kept her particularly close as of late. “I’ve been caring for her, babysitting her for the last couple of months.
It’s been great, very relaxing, enjoyable.” That seems to sum up much of Diehl’s life since his final day on the job on May 1, just as he turned 59. Not long after his final day as CAO, he and his wife Ann — and Olive, of course — packed up the trailer and hit the road for two months of camping and hiking in national parks
in B.C. and the U.S. A return to Kamloops brought more camping, more hiking and a chance to correct his slice on the golf course — though he’s already had to do it twice, he admits. For the winter, he’s concentrating on skiing, volunteering as a ski guide at Sun Peaks Resort. “I had a wonderful career and I was very for-
tunate to be able to work and live in Kamloops and have such a good career here,” Diehl says. “But, when you retire, you get a chance to do the things that are just for you alone. “Things like reading would have been a luxury for me before. “I never had the time, or even the inclination, because I read so many technical reports during

? City still getting their goat(s) Story and photos by Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
“T
HESE WERE higher than my car,” Donna Lindblom says, nodding towards the snow-covered thistle stalks that are thick on the ground at the southern end of Kamloops’ Tournament Capital Ranch. These days, many of those stalks are closer to knee height. In some places, they’re barely visible through the snowpack. In the distance, the thistledestroyers move across the ground in a strange, seething swirl, a waddling
mass of horns and fur and teeth. They have, Lindblom notes, gotten much fatter since their original summer debut in the city, when they arrived for what was supposed to be a 10-day pilot project in Kenna Cartwright Park. Thistles are good eating — nearly as good as alfalfa — and the ranch has more than enough to satisfy 350 hungry goats. Donna and Conrad Lindblom, who own and operate Rocky Ridge Vegetation Control, have used goats for weed control for more than a decade. But, before the economic downturn their work mainly took them to forestry cutblocks. When work in that area slowed

down several years ago, they began offering their herd to communities with invasive-plant problems. In June, that led them to Kamloops, where the goats were tasked with grazing 33 hectares of knapweed-infested nature park. At the outset, the city knew it liked the price tag of the herd — $300 per hectare grazed, compared to $820 per hectare to have the weeds pulled by prisoners, or $1,000 per hectare to treat them with pesticides. The real test, says parks supervisor Shawn Cook, was whether the goats could actually make a dent in the weeds. “From what we’ve seen, the results were fantastic,” Cook says.
The goats have a couple of advantages. For one, their digestive systems break down weed seeds, slowing the spread of the plants. They’re also deployable in highly sloped areas, of which Kamloops has a serious supply. By the end of the summer, the
Lindbloms and their goats had entered into a temporary use agreement with the city. By September, they were grazing the Tournament Capital Ranch. They won’t leave until some time this coming spring. Even then, the herd won’t be gone for good. In the new year, Cook says the parks department will bring an invasive-plant master plan to city council that includes goats in a big way. “The plan would be to use them every year, basically,” he says. “You would see them throughout our parks system if we do this in the future. “They would be all over the place within the city.”

Phoenix rises in warmth By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
It’s warm at Phoenix Centre this winter and, more importantly, that ambience doesn’t have to be maintained by staff relighting the pilot of the furnace. A new furnace and hot-water tank were installed this year, replacing a behemoth in the basement that would go out on a regular basis. Sometimes nightly. Sometimes more than once a night. Executive director Sian Lewis said the rehabilitation facility is still raising money to pay the $200,000 bill to upgrade the heater, but were delighted 10 per cent of it came from the community when it held its Turn Up the heat campaign in February. That event, which saw Phoenix Centre staff camp out overnight at Aberdeen Mall to talk about the work they do
(Taxes & installation included)

and accept donations, raised $20,000. Staff also had a presence throughout that month to talk about the work they do. Several other sponsors assisted, including the mall’s guest services, which donated proceeds from its gift-wrap program in February, Purdy’s Chocolates, which donated some of its products for the centre to sell, and East Side Mario’s, which fed staff at the tent event. The Blenz outlets at the mall and downtown donated $1 from all hot chocolates and mocha coffees they sold on Feb. 11 and Feb. 12. The tent event was also sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Rangers, Jasco Rentals, Kamloops Paddlewheelers Lions Club, the City of Kamloops Community Safety and Citizens on Patrol programs, Visual Signs and Awards and illusionist Estry Hiltz, who performed during
the fundraiser. Members of Steelworkers Local 7619 and staff at Ajax Mines combined to donate $5,000 to the furnace campaign. Replacing the furnace could have been a challenge, Lewis said, because the original was installed in the facility in the 1980s — after which the room to contain it was built. However, furnace technology and design has changed in the ensuing decades and the job done by HPF Engineering and Westway Plumbing and Heating went smoothly, Lewis said. Phoenix Centre is a 20-bed medically supported withdrawalmanagement program for adults and youth. It also offers outpatient programs for people living with substance-abuse issues. For more information or to donate, go online to phoenixcentre. org.

‘Nuisance’ abode on its way back By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
It was declared a nuisance by Kamloops city council in late August. Since then, the house at 356 McGowan Ave. in North Kamloops has seen its fortunes improve. The house was deemed uninhabitable by Kamloops Fire Rescue and the Interior Health Authority after a fire in 2008 and was the subject of numerous complaints to the city in the spring of this year. It also sparked a petition from neighbouring property owners, who claimed it had become a haven for transients, birds and rodents and asked the city to tear it down. However, after council agreed to declare the home a nuisance, owner Lynda Watt came forward to refute much of what had been reported about the conditions inside the house. Watt told council she had been working to get her home back up to snuff for several years, spending up to three hours a night hauling away debris and cleaning.
However, she said she was grappling with a mental-health issue, homelessness and other difficulties following the initial fire. Difficulties with a family estate had also held up funds earmarked for larger repairs. City council extended the time given her to complete a property inspection required once a home is declared a nuisance — a deadline that passed on Oct. 11. Since then, city director of development and engineering services Marvin Kwiatkowski told KTW, the report has been completed and one of the major concerns about the home has been alleviated. “Structurally, it’s in pretty good shape,” he said. The house won’t need to be demolished, but smoke and water damage will have to be addressed. The city is working with Watt to set up a timeline for those repairs, but Kwiatkowski said staff are trying to be sensitive with the file and plan to keep those discussions mostly behind the scenes and out of the council and media spotlight.

The new owner of a former Westsyde fixture is hoping the new year will bring a new operation to the neighbourhood. In May of 2012, Duane Henning — who also owns the Westsyder Pub — purchased the competing Westsyde Pump. While the private liquor store on the site remains open, Henning shut down the Pump later that same month. The site remains up for lease. When contacted by KTW, Henning said he’s had some interest in the Pump location. “There’s a few people looking at it,” he said, but declined to offer more details until papers are signed. In the past, Henning has suggested to media the site might work for a family restaurant. Henning said he hopes to see a new business move into the site some time next spring.

Recalling the Great Kamloops Ebola Outbreak of 2013
I
F YOU DECIDED TO barricade yourself in your house just before Christmas in order to avoid the dreaded Ebola outbreak in Kamloops, you can blame me for ruining your planned lastminute Christmas-shopping plans, Blame me — and the Internet and social media and especially the frustration known as autocorrect. Having uploaded to Facebook a nice photo of my daughter in a bookstore, I typed in a little explanation, noting bookstores are a favourite place to visit, even in this age of electronic reading. “We have to keep these places alive, in spite of damn ebooks and such,” is what I typed on my phone’s keypad. Of course, autocorrect could not recognize “ebooks” and naturally replaced it with a word if could recognize, so my post became: “We have to keep these places alive, in spite of damn Ebola and such.” This led to some hardy-har-har responses, with Black Press Victoria bureau chief Tom Fletcher assuming editorship of my Facebook page and assigning me the story: “Look, if there’s an Ebola outbreak in Kamloops, you need to forget the shopping and get a story out on that.” And, befitting a reporter with a keen eye on the story, Thompson Rivers University journalism prof Alan Bass noted: “Remember the great panic in 2012 over Ebola in bookstores? Well, I know how it started . . .” It’s not quite erroneous reporting, but it does illustrate how the Internet and all its creations can be used to change completely the intent of a message, something that happens with regularity. Of course, errors in reporting have existed since the town crier stepped outside in his tricorne hat to shout out
CHRISTOPHER FOULDS Newsroom
MUSINGS news of the day to the populace. It’s the nature of the beast when reporters rush to document facts about a story as quickly as they can. They attempt to do it as accurately as possible as well, though speed and pinpoint precision on facts is, at times, a marriage with as much success as Mike Tyson and Robin Givens. In the pre-Internet era, when morning and evening newspapers constituted the record of the day, minor corrections would be noted in the following day’s edition. Today, print editions do much the same, but the advent of online journalism — with no deadlines and featuring a beast with a limitless appetite for information — means mistakes can be corrected instantaneously, often before many readers even saw the original faux pas. That’s the positive. The negative means the immediacy and reach of online news give errors the remarkable ability to become “facts” that can travel around the world in minutes, spreading like a virus with every eyeball that scans the words. Had the World Wide Web been a dominant part of life in 1948, perhaps Dewey would have still defeated Truman according to the Chicago Tribune’s print edition, but the Trib
could have correctly reported online that Harry Truman had indeed bested Thomas Dewey for the presidency. The Internet’s voracious need to be fed information, and the pitfalls associated with that need, were clearly evident during coverage of the horrific school shootings in Connecticut earlier this month. In particular, online reporting combined with social networks created a tsunami of reports — and not all accurate. I admit to getting caught up in the frenzy, having emailed to acquaintances and posted on my Facebook page a link to the reported shooter, Ryan Lanza, an identity given by a law-enforcement official. Of course, the shooter was Adam Lanza, brother of Ryan. That fact was corrected, but not before Ryan Lanza became the most-despised person on earth for hours that day. There has been much media-tomedia introspection about premature (and erroneous) reports posted with lightning speed to various news sites during that tragic day in New England. Perhaps it will become the catalyst for more patience in reporting, for a collective effort to wait for official confirmation before stating as fact something that might not be. However, with the intense competition to be “first,” with newspapers still trying to find a way to make online news work financially, with “clicks” and “page views” crucial to the bottom line, we have not seen the last of trigger-happy online journalism. On the other hand, curing the Great Kamloops Ebola Outbreak of Christmas 2012 was as easy as disabling autocorrect on the cellphone. Just call me the Jonas Salk of the iPhone generation. editor@kamloopsthisweek.com
The Christmas and New Year’s season is all about spending time with family and being filled with cheer — at least, that’s the view from the various advertisements that appear during this time of the year. That’s OK for everyone who has a family that fits into the mould of the perfect clan. Happy faces, laughing children, people who love you and an abundance of cash. But, guess what? Not everyone has a home from a Sears catalogue. Rather than being the happiest time of year, for many people, Christmas and New Year’s is an unbearably lonely time. For those who don’t have family to share food and gifts with, being surrounded by images of merriment and perfect families only highlights the fact they don’t fit the mould. Canadian statistics from helplines have shown both the number and severity of calls by depressed people increases every year through November and December, returning to normal volume toward the end of January. Sometimes, however, all that is needed is someone to notice a person’s existence. If you know anybody who is spending the holiday alone, stop by with a card, invite them for dinner or just knock on their door and say hi. How good does it make you feel when a stranger smiles at you for no reason other than to show friendliness? Walking down the street, look people in the eye and smile. Make sure those who are feeling like they have nobody know that other Kamloopsians care.

Re: Story: Neighbour wants legal grow-op gone: “Here is another example of Health Canada’s mismanagement. “Health Canada mismanaged the program to such an extent that not only has the program garnered complaints from various sectors, it has been deemed unconstitutional by the courts on eight occasions. “Health Canada wilfully neglects the current program like slumlords willfully neglect property. “It is a wonder that legislation pertaining to the possession and production of cannabis even exists!” — posted by Wayne Phillips
WHEN A GREYHOUND RUNS LIKE A TURTLE Everything that could go wrong did on the weekend before Christmas to guarantee staff at the Greyhound depot in Sahali had their hands full. Station manager Grant Odsen said shutdowns on the Coquihalla and Trans-Canada highways, combined with foul weather in communities to the north and east of Kamloops, led to buses arriving late and passengers left waiting, some for hours. Add to that Transport Canada regulations that limit the number of hours drivers can be behind the wheel and on duty and many were hitting that peak and required to take eight hours off. Increased passenger use also meant relief drivers were already called into duty. Odsen added it’s something that tends to only happen at Christmas, when people are travelling to visit family and friends. Dave Eagles/KTW
Re: Story: Teen’s death came hours before her bus was to leave: “This young person was taken from the mighty Gitxsan Nation. “Such a tragic occurrence. “I hope her killers will be found and brought to justice, not just in the court system, but also n the creator’s eyes. “My heart goes out to the family and friends. “The Gitxsan Nation is weaker today and we all feel her loss.” — posted by Nikon Da Cree
Editor: Growing Up in Vancouver’s West End is a project telling what it was like to grow up in the West End of Vancouver. The project has been initiated by three old classmates from the area. Many stories and letters have been received from former students and residents, the bulk of which deal with events and relationships in the 1940s and 1950s. Many themes are evident, including colourful stories about bootlegging, gambling, sports, hangouts, school days and the risks and adventure of living in and around the downtown core. This project will result in a book about living and growing up in the West End and an archive of stories and information about the area for researchers and the public. Essentially, it is about growing up in Vancouver’s West End through stories and letters from old West Enders. It will be a history of the people and by the people, rather than a more traditional historical piece. A major task facing the organizers of the project is reaching a wide number of people who resided in the West End during their youth. We want to expand the scope of the endeavour to include stories and accounts that describe life across several eras. To that end, we invite people who grew up in Vancouver’s West End to contact us by email at gazpen@gmail.com. We believe our completed work will be a welcome addition to the cultural history of our city. Gary Pennington Roberts Creek
Could you live in Kamloops on just $500 a month? Editor: There are many problems in Kamloops associated with government that need to be resolved. People living with disabilities have a hard time getting medical needs taken care of, such as dental and vision. People with disabilities have a much harder time living on what we earn from the ministry and could use the money, rather then see it go to useless things. Many people in Kamloops and all over
B.C. are having these types of problems. Many of us are very frustrated with the amount of money we are being given for our support. People living with disabilities receive only $500 to live on and pay bills and it is not enough to support us with our dentistry or to have our sight checked. I am fighting to save Kamloops from the destructive path it is on. We need to help people living with disabilities and help those living on the
streets as many lives are at stake. We deserve to have our rights back where they belong, with extra money so we can survive in this world. For those with money, think of us and think of what you would do if you were in our shoes. And, think about this: Would you be able to live on just $500 a month? Litsa Ferguson Kamloops

Gaglardi trial to take place in June By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER
tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
In April, Tom Gaglardi had charges laid against him for allegedly breaking federal laws while carrying out construction work on a lakefront property he owns in Savona — allegations he is slated to dispute at trial next summer. strong ties — personally and financially — to Kamloops and the surrounding area. According to court documents obtained by KTW earlier this year, the charges allege Gaglardi and his father, Bob, contravened federal legislation by first clearing and then filling land — actions “that resulted in the harmful alteration, disruption or destruction of fish habitat, the foreshore of Kamloops Lake.” In addition to Tom and Bob Gaglardi, Northlands Properties, Gaglardi’s
company and the force behind the Sandman development under construction in downtown Kamloops, is also named as an accused party. Three days have been set aside for trial in Kamloops provincial court, beginning on June 18, 2013. Pre-trial conferences have been scheduled for April 8, 2013, and May 13, 2013. The charges aren’t the only legal trouble Gaglardi has found himself in as of late. In September, a

local traffic-control company filed a lawsuit against Gaglardi and Northlands, alleging the millionaire failed to make good on a bill of less than $300.
Interior Traffic Control is seeking $268.80 — plus $156 in court fees — for work done at the Sandman construction site on Lorne Street in February.

Police seek help in finding 15-year-old girl Kamloops RCMP are asking for help in finding a missing 15-year-old girl. Sarah Lynne Robinson has not been home since Dec. 7. Police say she left her Kamloops home voluntarily and is likely staying with people she knows or is living off the street. Mounties say Sarah has been living a lifestyle that could put her in jeopardy, noting she has been reported miss-
ing a number of times before, but usually for shorter periods of time. Sarah is of First Nations heritage, stands five-foot-three, weighs 99 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. Anybody who has seen Sarah or has information about her is asked to call the Kamloops RCMP at 250-8283000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Sarah Lynne Robinson has not been home since Dec. 7. If you know where she is, call Kamloops RCMP at 250828-3000.

Dermatologist did decamp for The Rock By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
Former Kamloops dermatologist Dr. Christopher Sladden made good on his declaration to leave the city and practise medicine elsewhere. Sladden, who had shared a dermatology practice with Dr. Richard Lewis, wrote to then-health minister Michael de Jong in April, explaining he was quitting and moving to a province that pays more for the dermatologist services he provides. He now works in Newfoundland. At the time of his declaration, Sladden said the fees paid to his specialty in B.C. had stagnated for years and did not adequately account for the cost to run a practice.
For example, Sladden said in April, in diagnosing a cancerous skin growth, he could charge the medical services plan (MSP) $60 for a first consultation and $40 to remove the growth. The overhead cost for such a procedure is about $40, he said, and the tax on the income would be another $20 to $30, resulting in a net income of about $30 to treat the cancer. Sladden was also angry the ministry had recommended dermatologists do more Botox treatments to boost their income, saying at the time it was disgraceful of the ministry to advertise a company’s drug that way. He said he only used the drug to treat medical conditions, not for cosmetic reasons.

Business owner sees $35,000 vanish Frustration with bank response adds to misery By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
When Sid Kandola sent off a $35,000 downpayment for an order of mattresses, he never suspected anything was amiss. The owner of City Furniture and Appliances had been dealing with the factory in China for more than five years and all the documents for his purchase appeared to be in order. But, when documents proving the mattresses had shipped failed to materialize, Kandola contacted the factory to see what had gone wrong. “The person we were dealing with at the factory, their email got hacked by this criminal. They were able to intercept all the mail coming from the factory, all the documents,” he said. “We never knew there was someone in the middle. We thought we were getting all these documents, all the proof and that, from the factory.” Once he became aware of the fraud, Kandola was quick to get in touch with HSBC, the bank used by both accounts involved in the transaction.
But, he said, the bank’s response to the situation has been disappointing — and has him concerned about the security of banking online in the future. Kandola said when he first contacted the bank the day after sending the money, HSBC told him all it could do was put a trace on the payment. Kandola didn’t hear from anyone until three business days later, when he managed to get an account manager from the Kamloops branch on the line. She promised to look into the matter and call him back, but when he had heard nothing a week later, a frustrated Kandola visited the bank in person to complain. That got him a meeting with a regional manager, who confirmed the bank had put a trace on the money, but couldn’t give him any information on where it had gone. A second trace was ordered, but Kandola was told there might be no way to retrieve the money. “If the money’s already gone to the fraud account, there’s nothing we can do. I was really shocked,” Kandola said. More than a week later — and
more than two weeks since the fraud was first discovered — Kandola still doesn’t have any information from the bank and his phone messages have gone unreturned. He said he’s spoken with other banks he deals with and has been told information on where his money is should have been available within 48 hours. “It’s been two weeks,” he said. “In today’s world, you can pick up a phone and call across the world and get information in seconds.” Kandola said he feels the bank isn’t taking a hard enough line on fraud, since there’s no indication the HSBC branch where the fraudulent account was created will be notified or take any action against the hacker. “It’s really frustrating,” he said. “A lot of people do online banking and they think the bank has some responsibility when there’s online fraud. The way I’m getting information, the bank’s not doing anything.” At press time, calls to the Kamloops HSBC as well as HSBC’s national communications team requesting comment were not returned.

We never dreamed you’d go away. Never thought of sorrow, so sure you’d always be here. We miss you each day - in each memory and thought of the special husband, father, grandfather and friend who meant so much to us and the happiness your brought. Your love will live in our hearts forever. Love from the Takahashi Family
Paul Tyler Joseph Ayres July 17, 1980 - December 28, 2010 It’s been two years since you’ve been gone It still hurts all day long There isn’t a day that goes by Without us thinking “why?” So many things we wanted to say We never imagined you’d be so far away In our hearts you’ll always be Until the time is meant for us We never got to say goodbye But we know you’re always by our side We share so many happy memories My son, My little brother...our friend May our love for your reach Heaven today You’re sadly missed by all Until we meet again! Murray Francis Moher, aged 79 years, passed away peacefully on Dec 20, 2012, at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home. Predeceased by his wife Muriel, in October 1987, as well as one sister Helen Tone and two brothers Ken and Bud Moher. Dad will be lovingly remembered by his two sisters: Mary Vangen and Kay Shumaker, both of Swift Current Sask. Very loved and sadly missed by his family: Cindy (Albert) Gabriel, Karen (Jim) Duffey, David (Shirleen) Moher. Grandchildren Kyle Brooks, Ryan Duffey, Laura (Cody) Finden, Brandon and Layton Gabriel, Harmony, William, Ronald Moher, and great-grandson Wyatt Finden Dad was born on Jan 27,1933 in a little farmhouse in the Success district of Sask. He was the youngest in a family of six, leaving home at the age of 14 to come out West. He spent most of his working life as a carpenter, helping to construct many of the landmark buildings in Kamloops today. Dad loved to grow roses and his vegetable garden, lying on his swing in the sunshine and falling asleep with the newspaper. He was a fabulous cook, always outdoing himself with the Christmas turkey. We have many fond memories of family day trips, and camping adventures that we will always hold close in our hearts. We love and miss you Dad. We wish to extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude for the kindness, and loving care from, Dr. Burris, the nurses of 7N, Dr. Rollheiser, and the amazingly compassionate women of Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home. We are forever grateful. A small Funeral Service will be held at Schoenings Funeral Chapel , 513 Seymour at 11:00 am Dec 28, 2012. One Final Gift Scatter me not to restless winds, Nor toss my ashes to the sea. Remember now those years gone by When loving gifts I gave to thee. Remember now the happy times The family ties we shared. Don’t leave my resting place unmarked As though you never cared. Deny me not one final gift For all who come to see A single lasting proof that says I loved... and you loved me.

RONSON Maschmeyer’s name will resonate with this generation’s Kamloops Blazer fans for years to come. His goal last season to force Game 7 in a second-round WHL playoff series with the Portland Winterhawks almost sent the Interior Savings Centre roof to Juniper. He rode off into the sunset after the Blazers were defeated in Game 7, so where is the 21-year-old blue-liner today? The farm boy from Bruderheim, Alta., is way out east in Antigonish, N.S., playing for the St. Francis Xavier X-Men in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports ranks. Sometimes, though, it feels like he never left the Tournament Capital. “It’s in the past but, when I watch highlights, it brings it all right back,” said Maschmeyer, whose

If his former mates were to win a WHL championship and advance to the Memorial Cup this season, Maschmeyer will have been a year too late. That’s OK with him. “If they did, I would wish I was 20 again, but I’d be happy for all of them,” he said. “I’d be super-jacked for them.” As for The Goal, it’s likely Maschmeyer will never experience anything like that again. He’s just fine with that, too. “That one is going to be a tough one to beat,” Maschmeyer said. “You never know what could be in front of you and you hope you get that feeling again. “If not, I’ll be happy with that one.”

The Kamloops Minor Baseball Association’s Facility of Dreams hit a few roadblocks along the way, but it’s expected to come to fruition in the new year. Sean Wandler, a KMBA director and chairman of the building committee, said the 5,000-square-foot indoor baseball facility will likely open in early January on McArthur Island. “That’s still what we’re shooting for,”
?
said Wandler, head coach of the midget AAA Kamloops Riverdogs. “But, you know construction, we’re kind of at the whim of their schedules.” The facility will be 100 feet long, 50 feet wide and 24 feet tall, with an indoor ceiling of 22 feet. It will feature three
full-size retractable batting cages, netting, pitching mounds and artificial turf. “The last big contractor is the netting contractor and I’ve been assured they can come in early January,” Wandler said. At a press conference in February, KMBA directors said the project would be built in two phases and, in a perfect world, phase 1 — the main building — was expected to possibly open in the fall. near to being reality line set for phase 2, a vestibule between the new building and an existing washroom facility. The original price tag was $300,000, but that has changed. “In our original plan, we were going to do it in two phases. When we got into it, we said ‘If we’re going to do it, let’s do it all.’ Both phases will be
finished at the same time, with a final price tag of about $500,000. Part of the cost was covered by a $100,000 loan from the City of Kamloops, while the Kamloops Blazers Sports Society’s Sports Legacy Fund provided a $75,000 grant, to be dispersed over five years. When construction is finished, the Kamloops Minor
Baseball Association plans to cover operating costs with usergroup fees. The facility will be able to house a variety of functions — including everything from home shows to indoor sporting events. Wandler is thrilled with the work already completed. “We’re pretty much there now and we’re really happy.

As 2012 draws to a close, we would like to take the time to thank the Kamloops community for your patience as we prepare our Environmental Assessment Application for submission. Moving into 2013, our work will continue to focus on finalizing the baseline studies that form the foundation of our application; the application which will answer the questions you’ve been asking. We want to assure you that the consultation process is integral and relevant to the outcome of our Environmental Assessment Application. We are mindful of our responsibility to keep you apprised of our ongoing activities and developments and, as such, we feel it is important to inform you that we are planning to conduct drilling and ground surveying throughout the Project area. The information collected will be used as support for our Environmental Assessment Application. We will have staff and equipment working in the area and have notified the affected land-owners of where and how this work will be done. We are also coordinating our efforts with Kinder Morgan to ensure that the integrity of the local pipeline is maintained as we do this work. Drilling and surveying is expected to commence before year end and be completed in the spring of 2013. KGHM International is looking forward to further engaging local residents and other stakeholder groups in order to advance the Ajax Project in a way that will ensure we are making a positive contribution to the City of Kamloops and the Thompson Nicola Regional District.

LOCAL NEWS
12 months of helping others, saving money
The 2013 Kamloops Charity Calendar was created to help support local notfor-profit organizations and promote local living. The theme, Love Your City, reflects the goal of the fundraiser to help three
local charities: The YMCAYWCA Empty Toy Box campaign, The House of Ruth and the Kamloops Humane Society. In addition to the photographs featured on the calendar, it has coupons for sav-
ings throughout the city. The calendar is a collaborative project between 12 businesses, many volunteers and models. They are available at Fudge Yeah, Doctor Love, Full Boar Bike Store,
Get Polished, His & Her Photography, Mountain High Pizza, Outrageous Impact Fashion, Qphoria Tanning & Wellness, Rebecca Smerdal Photography, Sakred Skin & Studio, and Sugar & Spice Beauty Bar.
DWC wants your miles Developing World Connections is teaming up with Aeroplan for the Beyond Miles charitable pooling program, which runs to Friday, Jan. 4. The campaign lets people donate their Aeroplan miles to nonprofit organization to use them for their international and national travel needs. DWC provides short-term international volunteer experiences to 17 communities in the developing world, partnering with incountry organizations to complete various infrastructure projects, such as building homes, schools, training centres and water-irrigation systems. Donated Aeroplan miles are used to travel to these communities to monitor and assess the organization’s community-development programs. Last year, DWC collected close to 60,000 points and this year, the goal is 100,000. Donations can be made online through ¨. Donations can also be made at the DWC office, 220-141 Victoria St. with Aeroplan account information.
Sun Peaks gets cash Sun Peaks will receive $298,921 this year for projects that help support tourism infrastructure and amenities. The funding comes from the provincial government’s Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) for projects like music-event development and staging, and an outdoor ice arena.
FOR RECYCLING YOUR MILK CARTONS
Recycling your milk containers is easy. Simply give them a quick rinse and bring them with your bottles and cans on your next Return-It Depot trip. There’s no refund because you didn’t pay a deposit when you bought the milk. Last year Return-It collected over 630,000 kg of milk containers for recycling and kept them out of landfills. Help us recycle even more.

Kamloops at 200: Your history In June and August, Kamloops This Week published two special editions to mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of our community. Whether you come from a family that
settled here a century ago or if you arrived last month, everyone has some kind of history with Kamloops. As part of KTW’s 200-year special publications, we asked readers for their history with
the city where the rivers meet. Today, we continue Your History, based on submissions we received. Future editions of KTW will include more Your History stories.
Bridging history — a grandson remembers his hard-working grandfather I would like to be able to write about the five road bridges that remain today after the demolition of the Black Bridge in 1972. I was born in Kamloops in 1938 and remember crossing this bridge many times with my grandfather on his way to the Kamloops Golf Course. People think the Red Bridge is narrow but they would change their minds if they had to cross the old Black Bridge, at least it sure seemed awful narrow to me in the early 1950s. And, by the way, my grandfather got the first hole-in-one ever on the Kamloops Golf Course. My grandfather, Charles Francis O’Connor, is the reason for this documentation dealing with bridges. As we all know, the CNR bridge spans the South Thompson River from just behind the Interior Savings Centre to the T’kemlups Indian Reserve. More on CNR bridge as we near the end of this history of a man with an amazing career and dedication to the companies he worked for which would be hard to duplicate today. My grandfather, known as Charlie, was born in Arnprior, Ont., on Jan. 6, 1878 and started his railroad career at the age of 19 when he entered the service of Canadian Pacific as a bridge-man working between Calgary and Revelstoke. Then came many years of construction work. In 1899, he returned to Sault Ste. Marie and worked as carpenter and bridge-man on the construction of the Algoma Central Railway.
In 1902, he joined O’Boyle Bros., contractors in Sault Ste. Marie, as a bridge foreman on the construction of one of the largest trestles on the Canadian Pacific line revision at Red Sucker, Schreiber division. In 1903, he transferred to the services of McKenzie & Mann as a bridge foreman on construction of the Canadian Northern Railway and, in 1907, worked for the railway in the building of the Fort Rouge shops at Winnipeg. Grandfather returned in 1910 to McKenzie & Mann as assistant supervisor of construction of bridges and buildings. He worked on new lines and, in 1915,

came to the Pacific division of the CNR as B&B Master with headquarters in Kamloops. Then came another spell of construction when, in 1928, he was transferred to Edmonton as superintendent of construction for the western region of the CNR. After completion of work-in-hand in 1933, he returned to Kamloops to his former position of B&B Master. As he went up and down the line under his charge, he could see improvements on every side, many of which he had a hand in doing. At one time, there were 450 wooden
bridges on the lines under his supervision — quite a feat, if you think about it. He had to replace more than one of them in an emergency —some were lost to fire, others to washouts. Gradually, these were replaced either by fills or by steel-and-concrete structures. Now, there are only 70 of the bridges left. Gradual improvement of the right-ofway, the installation of more permanent works and rendering danger spots safe have all contributed to better conditions and increased efficiency. X See WORK B3

COMMUNITY
Work days were often long — very long X From B1
But, in spite of this, the elements are still masters at times. Kamloops citizens well remember the torrential downpour which continued for several days during the first part of July 1935. My grandfataer and his men were working day and night trying to keep the line open in the North Thompson Valley, where there were numerous washouts and bridges gone. Then, the dam at Tranquille burst, sweeping away the CNR bridge across Tranquille Creek. The B&B gang had already been working more than 50 hours with no rest when they reached the scene at Tranquille. But, apparently it is all in a railroader’s life, for they set to work. The mess was cleared away, the pile driver and timber were moved up
and, through daylight hours and through the night by the light of flickering oil flares — and with the roar of the flooded river still drowning out conversation — a bridge was driven across the gap and the steel joined up. In 20 hours, a bent bridge was built. The bridge gang had been on the job for 72 hours. Another tough one was bridging the Sumas River after the old bridge had been taken out by heavy rains. Even before the equipment could reach the scene, many smaller obstacles had to be overcome through the Fraser Canyon. It was another 72-hour job under terrible weather conditions. After the rain stopped, the temperature dropped to a Fraser Valley all-time low of -6. My grandfather
was in charge of building the present CNR bridge across the South Thompson near Riverside Park. That was in 1927. Nine piers in the river and the sub-structure were completed in fourand-one-half months. On the main line, he also had charge of construction of three bridges across the Fraser River and one across the Athabasca. My grandfather had one daughter — my mother, Louise — and one son, Flight Sergeant, Observer Francis O’Connor ,who was killed overseas on active service with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942. He had been on a bombing mission when they were shot down over Barkway Village about 32 miles from London, England. The entire flight crew never had a chance. I would like to thank
the City of Kamloops Archives for most of the information for, if it was not for them, I could never had printed this life story of an amazing man and his dedication to his career. Most of the information from the archives was written at the time of my grandfather’s retirement on Jan. 5, 1943, exactly 65 years from the date of his birth. Grandfathear was well respected in this community, was a member of the Knights of Columbus and had many friends. He passed away in June 1960 at the age of 82. – Sonny Zart

Barriere will be bullish on 2013 New Year’s Eve promises to be a special experience in Barriere when the Bucking For The Farm Kids professional bullriders event and dance comes to the North Thompson Agriplex. Event organizer Steven Puhallo said the event is sanctioned by Elite Professional Bull Riders (EPBR) and approximately 40 top-rated bucking bulls will be take part. “We’ll have North America’s best bull riders up against B.C.’s best bull riders,” said Puhallo. The top eight riders will move into a championship round with
a $5,000 added purse.” Having the EPBR sanction allows the event to draw a higher calibre of rider, said co-organizer Ed Lebourdais. The event is hosted by the Farm Kids Scholarship Fund, a non-profit organization committed to rural youth pursuing higher education. The New Year’s Eve event, which runs from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m., is its first fundraiser. The bullarama is open to anyone, but following it is a dance that is only open to those 19 and older.
A round-trip shuttle service will be provided from Kamloops to the agriplex. The shuttle will leave the Northills Centre parking lot at 5 p.m., and return at 1 a.m. There are also shuttle stops at Vinsulla (Kealtey Road/ Highway 5 pull off), Heffley Creek (Heffley Creek Hall) and McLure (McLure fruit stand). Tickets are $80 for the bullarama and dance or, for just the bull event alone, $50 and $15 for children 12 and under. Tickets are on sale at online at farmkidsfund.ca.
Sun Peaks goes social to promote fun Sun Peaks Resort has launched a socialmedia contest to promote experiences there. Just Picture It allows guests to capture and share every angle of their Sun Peaks experience using #SunPeaks360 through Instagram and Twitter and by posting to the Sun Peaks Facebook page at facebook.com/ SunPeaksResort. Weekly winners will be chosen through a voting application on the Facebook page and will be promoted into the final round of voting to win a five-night reunion vacation for six people. “It’s important to harness the social power of our most powerful ambassadors — our guests,” said Christina Antoniak, marketing manager for Tourism Sun Peaks. Tourism Sun Peaks partnered with Think! Social Media for the campaign. The contest is inspired by the increasing trend of travellers to seek out recommendations from trusted peers social channels and by the sharp increase in the use of Instagram and mobile photo sharing. Voting on the first round of featured photos begins on Jan. 7 and continues weekly until March 25. Weekly winners are chosen every Monday. Grand-prize voting will take place from March 25 to March 31 with the winner
announced on April 1, 2013. The Grand Prize winner can choose between a Sun Peaks
summer or winter reunion for themselves plus five friends for five nights, to use in the summer or next winter
season. For rules and regulations, go online to sunpeaksresort.com /JPI.
NOTICE TO ELECTORS OF AN ALTERNATIVE APPROVAL PROCESS TRANQUILLE ROAD STREET LIGHTING UPGRADE This is the second of two notices to advise electors in the City of Kamloops of the intention to adopt the “Tranquille Road Street Lighting Upgrade Loan Authorization By-law No. 14-1-169”. The purpose of the by-law is to borrow an amount not to exceed $2,400,000 to finance the cost to upgrade the street lighting and signalization along a portion of Tranquille Road that will be repaid over a period not to exceed 15 years. It is estimated that the borrowing will result in a tax increase for the average residential property of $4.18 per year. A copy of By-law No. 14-1-169 and a summary of the proposal are available from the Legislative Services Division at City Hall during each business day of the week between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. The project will upgrade the street lighting and signalization along 1.8 km of Tranquille Road from Leigh Road to Sydney Avenue. For project details, please contact Jim McNeely, Streets and Internal Services Manager, at telephone: 250-828-3535 or email: jmcneely@kamloops.ca. The City of Kamloops proposes to borrow the money and upgrade the street lights and signalization along a portion of Tranquille Road unless, by 4:30 pm on January 28, 2013, at least 10% of the electors in the whole of the City of Kamloops sign an elector response form opposing the implementation of the proposal unless the City of Kamloops holds a vote. The number of elector responses required to prevent the City of Kamloops from proceeding unless a vote is held is estimated to be 6,732. A report respecting the basis on which this determination was made is available upon request from the Legislative Services Division, City Hall. Alternative Approval Elector Response Forms Elector responses are required to be submitted to the City of Kamloops on forms that can be obtained during regular business hours from the Legislative Services Division at City Hall; the form may also be downloaded from the main page of the City of Kamloops website at www.kamloops.ca. The only elector response forms that will be accepted by the City of Kamloops are the ones provided by the City of Kamloops, or an accurate copy of the form.

A sunny afternoon, the right equipment and some solid ice below combined to make for a fantastic day of ice fishing at Edith Lake for co-workers Chris Lawson (in tent) and Denise Derkson. The two were among a dozen ice-fishing hopefuls on the ice recently. As with any sport, knowing the dangers and risks associated with the sport are key to a successful outing. Edith Lake is located in Knutsford, just south of Aberdeen. George Wycherley/KTW

MORTGAGE MATTERS UNIQUE MORTGAGE PRODUCTS THAT FIT YOU AND YOUR LIFESTYLE In today’s competitive lending environment, banks are fighting for your business. The result? Many lending institutions are lowering interest rates like never before and are creating specialized niche products. Here are a few examples: 10 year mortgages – Looking for payment security over the long term? The 10 year mortgage is for people who find comfort in stable financial payments and want to limit their risk to potential high interest rates over the next decade. Flex down payment mortgages – Having trouble raising enough money for a down payment? The flex down mortgage offers buyers the chance to use borrowed money to buy a home. The bank expects the borrower to have good credit and good employment to qualify. This type of product may allow you to buy now and stop paying high rents. 5% cash back mortgages – Can’t afford that truck payment plus a mortgage? If you have a down payment, but can’t afford to use it for both bill reduction and buying a home, then the cash back mortgage is an option. You can use the 5% for anything you want – home renovations, pay off bills, add to savings. Purchase plus improvements – Can’t find anything in your price range you like? The purchase plus improvements mortgage allows you to increase your mortgage by up to 20% of your purchase price to renovate your home. This way, you can buy a less expensive home and renovate it the way you want – all included in your mortgage. This program does not cover pools and hot tubs, but roofs, walls, kitchens, bathrooms are fine. Purchase plus improvement mortgages are available at very competitive rates. Equity Mortgages – Has the bank said “no” because of your income, but you have strong equity in your home? There are lenders who will take into account the equity you have built up in your home and lend on that instead of income. 50% (50% ownership) and 65% (35% ownership) loan to value percentages are often acceptable to lenders. The lender will always ask for an appraisal and will expect the borrower to have excellent credit. Whether you are a first-time homebuyer, up for renewal or refinancing, there are many unique and competitive products available on the market today. ‘There should be no

Warning: You may be billed for out-of-bound rescue Skiers and snowboarders heading to Sun Peaks Resort will encounter epic amounts of the white stuff — and possible payment for their rescue if they deliberately venture out of bounds. Sun Peaks is enjoying a historic December, with about 200 centimetres of snow gracing the resort. However, in the wake of rescues of outdoor enthusiasts who decided to go out of bounds at Cypress Bowl in West Vancouver and on Revelstoke Mountain, officials at Sun Peaks are reminding visitors to remain within the marked ski area boundary. “There should be no reason for resort skiers to venture beyond the boundary, particularly with the immense amount of powder within bounds,” said Jamie
Tattersfield, the 20-year veteran director of mountain operations at Sun Peaks. Wind and intense snow flurries in the last few days have combined to create hazards in the backcountry. Heavy snowstorms reduce visibility, create deep hazardous tree wells and lead to instabilities in the snowpack that can result in avalanches. Inside the ski area boundary, Tattersfield noted, slopes and trails are monitored by experts on a daily basis to increase safety. “Skiing is a healthy and exhilarating activity,” said Tattersfield “Thanks to thoughtful trail design and natural attributes, Sun Peaks is regarded as one of the safest destinations in the country. But, like most ski areas in the province, Sun Peaks and local search
and rescue respond to lost persons that have purposefully ducked under a roped boundary and ventured knowingly out of bounds. “These unprepared skiers and snowboarders often make uninformed decisions that lead to a necessary rescue effort.” In cases in which the mountain resort is required to conduct a rescue, the individual is responsible and may be charged for the cost of their rescue. Last, Cypress Mountain confirmed it is planning to send a $10,000 bill to 33-yearold Sebastien Boucher, the snowboarder who got lost after going out-of-bounds on Sunday, Dec. 16. Boucher was rescued on Tuesday, Dec. 18, after search-and-rescue crews spent more than 48 hours trying to find him.

GLOBAL VIEWS
Of gun culture and democracy’s age in the U.S.
H
ERE’S AN interesting statistic: The second-highest rate of gun ownership in the world is in Yemen, a largely tribal, extremely poor country. The highest is in the United States, where there are almost as many guns as people — about 300-million guns for 311-million people. But here’s another interesting statistic: In the past 25 years, the proportion of Americans who own guns has fallen from about one in three to one in five. However, the United States, unlike Yemen, is a rich country and the average American gun owner has four or five firearms. Moreover, he or she is utterly determined to keep them, no matter what happens. What has just happened in Sandy Hook, Conn., is the seventh massacre this year in which four or more peo-
GWYNNE DYER World WATCH ple were killed by a lone gunman. The fact that this time 20 of the victims were little girls and boys six or seven years old has caused a wave of revulsion in the United States, but it is not likely to lead to new laws on gun controls. It’s not even clear that new laws would help. Half the firearms in the entire world are in the United States. The rate of murders by gunfire in the U.S. is almost 20 times higher than the average rate in 22 other populous, high-
income countries where the frequency of other crimes is about the same. There is clearly a connection between these two facts, but it is not necessarily simple causeand-effect. Here’s one reason to suspect it’s not that simple: The American rate for murders of all kinds — shooting, strangling, stabbing, poisoning, pushing people under buses, etc. — is seven times higher than it is in those other 22 rich countries. It can’t just be guns. And, here’s another clue: The rate of firearms homicides in Canada, another mainly English-speaking country in North America with a similar political heritage, is about half the American rate — and, in England, it is only one30th as much. What else is in play here? Steven Pinker, whose book, The Better Angels
of Our Nature, is about the long-term decline in violence of every kind in the world, is well aware murder rates have not fallen in the U.S. in the past century. (Most people don’t believe violence is in decline anywhere, let alone almost everywhere. That’s why he wrote the book.) Pinker suggests an explanation for the American exception. In medieval Europe, where everybody from warlords to peasants was on his own when it came to defending his property, his rights and his honour, the murder rates were astronomically high: 110 people per 100,000 in 14th-century Oxford, for example. It was at least as high in colonial New England in the early 17th century. By the mid-20th century, the murder rate in England had fallen more than a hundredfold — in London, it was less than
one person per 100,000 per year. In most Western European countries, it was about the same, whereas the U.S. murder rate is still up around seven people per 100,000 per year. Why? Pinker quotes historian Pieter Spierenburg’s provocative suggestion that “democracy came too early” to America. In European countries, the population was gradually disarmed by the centralized state as it put an end to feudal anarchy. Only much later, after people had already learned to trust the law to defend their property and protect them from violence, did democracy come to these countries. This is also what has happened in most other parts of the world, although, in many cases, it was the colonial power that disarmed the people and instituted rule of law.
But, in the United States, where the democratic revolution came more than two centuries ago, the people took over the state before they had been disarmed — and they kept their weapons and old attitudes. Indeed, large parts of the United States, particularly in the southeast and southwest, still have an “honour” culture in which it is accepted that a private individual may choose to defend his rights and his interests by violence rather than seeking justice through the law. The homicide rate in New England is less than three people per 100,000 per year; in Louisiana, it is more than 14 people per 100,000 per year. None of this explains the specific phenomenon of gun massacres by deranged individuals who are presumably present at the same rate in every country. It’s just that in the
U.S., it’s easier for individuals like that to get access to rapid-fire weapons. And, of course, the intense media coverage of every massacre gives many other crazies an incentive to do the same — only more of it. But, only one in 300 murders in the United States happens in that kind of massacre. Most are simply due to quarrels between individuals, often members of the same family. Private acts of violence to obtain “justice”, with or without guns, are deeply entrenched in American culture — and the murder rate would stay extraordinarily high even if there were no guns. Since there are guns everywhere, of course, the murder rate is even higher. But, since the popular attitudes to violence have not changed, that is not going to change, either. gwynnedyer.com

For the calamari: 1 package (340 grams) frozen calamari rings 3 fresh jalapeno peppers, sliced into rings 1 cup flour 1 cup cornmeal Flaked kosher salt/freshly ground pepper Canola oil for frying Lemon or lime wedges for garnish and squeezing Thaw calamari under cold water or in the fridge overnight. Pat dry with paper towel. Combine flour and cornmeal. Gently toss calamari rings and jalapeno rings in mixture. Place into a sieve and shake gently to remove excess flour. Discard flour mixture. Fill a medium pot half way with canola oil. Place over medium-high heat until temperature reaches 375 F. Carefully drop in calamari, frying only about a handful at a time, making sure to separate the rings. Cook for less than a minute, until crispy and golden (not brown). Remove from oil with a slotted spoon and drain on a plate lined with paper towel. Sprinkle with salt and pepper while still hot. Squeeze with desired amount of lemon or lime. Where to find it: Packages of frozen, unseasoned calamari rings are available at Superstore in 340-gram packages and are much less fussy to work with than fresh. For the sandwiches: You need crusty rolls, tzatziki and butter lettuce. Slice rolls and spread cut sides generously with tzatziki. Heap with calamari and leaves of butter lettuce.
Calamari cure
tziki Tza 1 cup plain yogurt (not low-fat or nonfat) 1/2 medium English cucumber, peeled, halved and seeded 1 1/2 tbsps. fresh dill, finely chopped 1 garlic cloves, minced 2 tsp. fresh-squeezed lemon juice Flaked kosher salt Line a large strainer with three layers of cheesecloth and place over a large bowl. Spoon yogurt into lined strainer and set aside at room temperature forthree3 hours to drain (there should be room at the bottom for the liquid to collect). Discard liquid and transfer yogurt to a medium bowl. Meanwhile, coarsely grate cucumber. Place in a second strainer and let stand at room temperature to drain, about three hours. Discard liquid. Squeeze any excess moisture from cucumber. Combine cucumber, dill, garlic, lemon juice and yogurt. Season to taste. Note: If you haven’t any cheesecloth, line the strainer with a triple layer of good-quality paper towel. It will wick away the moisture and allow it to drain away without absorbing the yogurt itself.

TRAVEL
Perfecting Palm Springs —a quick guide to laid-back glamour By Colleen Friesen SPECIAL TO KTW travelwriterstales.com
I
AM COLLEEN FRIESEN, A TRAVEL WRITER — AND I AM SELFLESS. On behalf of the reader, I head out on whirlwind press trips; non-stop events where I eat, drink, visit and stay in as many places as possible. A recent Palm Spring’s press trip was no exception, with a heady mix of restaurants and events. Despite the rush of all the things to do, one day stands out and remains timeless. For me, this day embodies the Sinatra-inspired fabulousness of Palm Springs. First, it must be understood Palm Springs was created as the antithesis to the flash of L.A. Since the 1920s, this was the place the L.A. elite retreated to, the place they came to kick back, chill and escape the demands of the Hollywood life. But, in the oil crashing late 1970s, the place lost its sheen and, when the economy finally charged up again, it was to create new sprawling desert cities — Palm Desert, Indian Wells, Cathedral City. Palm Springs was left, quite literally, in the dust. But, precisely because Palm Springs was passed over in pursuit of the new, its architecture was saved. It is now home to the largest concentration of mid-century modern architecture and the current revival and interest is showing it all off to its best advantage. My first night at the glamourous Riveria Palm Springs was one example — a late-1950s design, the hotel has recently undergone a $70-million face lift and is a testament to chic. This perfect Palm Springs day started with a short drive to have breakfast at Norma’s in the ohso-hip Parker Hotel. There is something about sitting outdoors in a palm-rustling garden whilst diving into cinnamon crepes stuffed with exquisitely thin slices of mango
and papaya that sets the tone for a day. Freed of Vancouver socks, I wiggled my toes, pleased to feel warm desert air on skin. After breakfast, we drove through the Roadrunner Hour-inspired landscape to Indian Canyons on the Agua Caliente Cahuilla Indian Reservation. This desert oasis has various trails and gorgeous shade-covered abrupt rock walls. We met up with a ranger-guide to tour us through the palms and sand. We walked with Raven Longbow along a dusty trail while he explained how the Cahuilla (Kaw-weah) lived and thrived in the area.
Breakfast crepes at Norma’s in the Parker Hotel are a tasty way to fuel up before heading out on a tourist expedition. Colleen Friesen photo

WEEKLY CROSSWORD
TRAVEL
Spa, sauna — ah! X From B13
Longbow (who is actually an Apache and also raises a couple dozen scorpions for their medicinal venom) is one of the most entertaining and knowledgeable walkabout guides I’ve come across. We learned how various roots, shrubs and leaves are utilized for healing and then listened as Longbow played a haunting flute solo (a tune off his recent CD — of course) and then picnicked in a cathedral made of a grove of towering palms. Back in Palm Springs at the Spa Resort Casino, I drifted between steam baths, saunas and “taking the waters” in a private, mosaic-lined hot tub for one. The spa experience finished with being led to a dimly lit room
where single beds were lined up in two rows like a little orphanage. I was covered in soft sheets with cool compresses placed on each eye. It is not often one uses the word bliss in an authentic way, unless you happen to have zoned out in a dimly lit room in an utter state of, yes, bliss. Inspiration came that night at the Palm Springs Follies. Showgirls from 55 to 78 kicked, strutted and sang in costumes studded with crystals and feather foliage of epic proportions (one of the dancers was a 78-year old mother of seven who does nine shows a week while wearing a zillionpound glittering costume). The night ended, as some of the best nights do, discussing the
shiny day with a new travel-writing friend. We drank martinis at the Trio bar across the street from our new digs, the uber-funky Movie Colony Hotel, a divinely-rendered oasis. (In fact, the Movie Colony was designed by Albert Frey in 1935 and has been lovingly vamped into a stylish and friendly enclave). Before I tucked in, I opened the door to my deck. A fat moon washed the desert hills with a pale sheen. A cool breeze whispered a promise, a promise that tomorrow would be another perfect desert day. I slept with a smile — a selfless smile. FAITH
Here’s a question: What if Jesus had not come?
N
OW THAT ANOTHER DEC. 25 is past behind us and the trees and the tinsels are about to be put away, the question the headline could perhaps haunt some thinkers. Did we ever think what it would have meant to the world if Jesus had not come? Young people would, of course, decry the absence of trees, festivities and, of course, Santa. But, some older ones would have strange thoughts about this far-off imaginary future. Picture it this NARAYAN MITRA way. You Gotta Have An old man, gloomy and FAITH thoughtful, is sitting in his room gazing into the dying fire. It is midnight on Dec. 24 — but, it is not Christmas Eve. There is no Christmas, no Christ, the children are silent and the world is desolate. Eternal death and sin remain. The old man is sad, thinking it was not always so. Many centuries ago, there was Christmas, the family gatherings and happy children tyiing their stockings, listening to the old story of “shepherds abiding in the field keeping over
their flocks by night.” All that was long ago, before the world grew weary of Christ. Gradually, year by year, they grew tired of hearing about Him, tired of thinking about Him. The majority of those for whom He gave His life lived without ever a thought of Him. Others came to church in a patronizing way and said prayers to Him (as few as possible), heard the sermons about Him (as short as possible) and went away to forget Him and neglect Him. God in heaven kept silent. Then, as they did not care to keep Him in their thoughts, they soon began to doubt and disbelieve. The children grew too wise for the story of Bethlehem. The clever men proved He had never left the tomb, that He was only a very good man, that the astounding miracle of God coming to Earth was but a foolish dream that had to pass away. Then, in the vein of intellectual pride, they criticized Him whose birth they were supposed to celebrate. He who would not break the bruised reed could never accomplish the proud destiny of humanity, for the bruised reed must be broken and flung aside. The physical and mental failures must be painlessly destroyed lest they become a dragging chain on human progress. People must learn that breach of law has
no forgiveness. Love of the failing and the helpless would be unworthy of God, a weakness in the grand scheme of things. And, that Christ was a mistaken dreamer. In the midst of it all, the Lord arose in His indignation, saying: “Since they care not any more for the Son of my love, be it to them even as they will. Let the spirit of unbelief seize upon the world. Let there be no more Christ or Christmas.” For a moment, the world was startled into dread. People took up their Bibles to read the story of Christ. On every page, blank spaces faced them. The story of the shepherds, the Sermon on the Mount, the lost sheep and the prodigal son, that of the dying thief, the cross of Calvary and the Easter morning — every word and act of Christ was gone. That was centuries ago. The old man looking into the fire has been studying history and somehow feels his heart stir yearningly over the old story of the dead dreamer, the carpenter’s son who dreamed he was the Son of God and could lift humanity. It was a noble dream. He wished it might have been true. In churches, standing still and crowded, people who found it impossible to believe the miracle of the incarnation now listen greedily to the miracles of all sorts of esoteric religions and all the mad beliefs of human minds gone wild.
The preachings seemed to have no hope if men failed to practise such fancies. They could only expect to reap as they sowed. Humanity must turn from its soft deceptions and sentiment. Nature shows God grand, majestic, beneficent to all who obey. But, nature shows no pity for disobedience. The gospel of the so-called science knows nothing of forgiveness. In the midst of the loneliness and desolation all around, the bleak outlook, there is no divine call to the weary and the heavy laden. The great God who guides the universe has more important things to think of — no one would presume to tell Him about their troubles. I feel I have not so far succeeded to adequately paint the glib picture of a world without Christ or Christmas. For, just as men do not value blessings of health and friendship — because they have never known what it is to be without them — so men often do not value Christ because they have not know what it is to be without Him. narayanmitra@hotmail.com KTW welcomes submissions to its Faith page. Columns should be between 600 and 800 words in length and include a headshot of the author, along with a short bio on the writer. Submissions can be sent via email to editor@ kamloopsthisweek.com.
