She passed away only 11 days after that, even though she was given three to 12 months to live. The couple didn’t have enough money for Emily’s wish and didn’t easily fit into other charities’ categories for help. So, instead Shawn

He ended up receiving more money than they needed for the wedding due to an outpouring of support from the community, and he vowed to create the Emily Ann Foundation to help others in similar situations after Emily’s death. A reader who has a tradition of driving around looking at Christmas lights added some suggestions, although she apologizes for not having addresses. “In Comox off of Murrelet on Plover Court there is a great display at one house in there — and in Comox a cool laser effect on a house on Aitken after Robb on your left if you are heading towards Comox Avenue,” she says. “Over in Courtenay on Rachel Road off Powerhouse there is one very notable house.”

Students at École Puntledge Park Elementary in Courtenay have brightened the holiday season for some of the less-fortunate citizens of the Comox Valley. Students from kindergarten to Grade 7 spent five weeks collecting donations of socks, toques, hats, gloves, toothpaste and toothbrushes for homeless individuals. “Our kids were responsible for painting the bags, providing the cookies and then they filled the bags after they painted them,â€? principal Kevin Reimer said. The initial goal of the Christmas Gift Bag project was 500 handpainted paper bags. Students wound up stuffing 542 bags with the above necessities. About 300 bags were given to people in the Comox Valley, with the
remainder donated to homeless individuals in Nanaimo and Victoria. “It fit really nicely with what we’re calling our I Can theme for this year, Reimer said, noting the project was in conjunction with the non-profit group Everybody Deserves A Smile. Chantal Stefan, a former Puntledge student teacher and founder of EDAS, came up with the project idea. “It’s been amazing because I’ve seen people downtown walking
around with the bags, Reimer said. He notes the viceprincipal, without identifying herself, commented on a bag when she ran into someone downtown. “The person said it absolutely made their Christmas, Reimer said. “It’s so nice to hear. The school has received congratulatory phone calls and e-mails from people around the province expressing their gratitude for the bags. reporter@comoxvalleyrecord.com

Drug deadline on Jan. 8 In 2008, the Community Drug Strategy Committee, an initiative of the City of Courtenay began to offer funding to Comox Valley schools to create projects that would help to prevent or delay the onset of substance use. The committee also provides information to promote the reduction of harms associated with substance use. Starting in 2010, funding was extended to include community organizations. For the fifth year in a row, the committee
is pleased to offer this funding. A maximum of $500 is provided to each school or community project. To obtain funding, a simple, one-page proposal must be submitted explaining the plans for activities or programming and a specific plan for using the funding. The project should be tailored to meet the needs of the organization or school. Once a proposal is approved, each project will be completed with a final summary report that must be submit-

A $15,000 grant from the Real Estate Foundation of B.C. and two grants worth the same amount for 2013 and 2014 from the Vancouver Foundation will enable the Comox Valley Project Watershed Society to produce an interactive animated map of the Courtenay River estuary. The online map will illustrate how the waterway has changed over time, and issues such as the loss of spawning habitat and salt marsh, the need to re-establish side channels critical during fish migration, and flooding caused by extreme weather. The animation feature will help present various scenarios for addressing these challenges and illustrate the social, environmental, recreational and economic benefits of a restored estuary. “What we really want is for it to be a place where all estuary
information could come together,” said Caila Holbrook, the society’s estuary co-ordinator and business manager of mapping services. She notes the map will include flood plain mapping. “We’d like to include all the information that we can so it’s one place people can go to get information when they visit the estuary.” The process might take a few years before the map is complete. It will start with public meetings in the new year. The aim is to glean information about past and current uses, and future options. “In the end it could be an educational tool,” Holbrook said.

JOHN AND LYNN ROGERS
After almost 30 years in the furniture and mattress business, I hate to say it, but I’m ashamed of my chosen profession. The rip-offs and misinformation abound, and in today’s tough retail market, there are a lot of sharks out there waiting to part you from your hard-earned money. Here’s how they’ll try to do it. Let’s start with those hard to resist words, TODAY ONLY! Whether it’s mattresses, bedroom furniture or what have you, some places are always promoting an amazing time-limited offer. That kind of high-pressure sales tactic is the oldest trick in the book. Do you really have to “buy today to save, or will you get the same deal next week? Or worse, did you buy last week and now you’re regretting it? These sales people don’t want you to feel good about your purchase, they want you to feel scared that you’ll lose out. Or maybe they’ll throw in a free ____!!! with that bedroom set you’re looking at. Is that because the mattress is so lumpy you’ll be up all night watching info-tainment, or is it because the TV is so lousy that they are literally giving it away? What you really need to know when you’re out shopping for furniture is the bottom line - what it’s going to cost to get something you want – not how much you’re going to “save by falling for these gimmicks. I get it from the sales guys too. They tell me about mattresses that give off oxygen, mattresses that are green and mattresses that will last 20 years. I ask them, “Is your furniture solid wood, they say, “Yes! Particle board is made from wood! Really? I’ve sold foam products since I was 11 years old, working at the Ladysmith Trading Co which my grandparents started in 1919. Believe me, one way or another, over the past 90-odd years, our family has seen it all. We know that when someone offers you something that seems too good to be true, it probably is. We don’t do it that way. If you just want the straight goods, a fair price, no gimmicks, no particle board, no commission sales people and no hogwash come and see me. And if you want to see my full-length mattress rant, go to www.johnsbedrooms.com and click on my blog).

Spirit of the season We don’t always have snow in the Comox Valley to help it feel like Christmas, but we make up for it with so many generous hearts giving and giving. The number of excellent charitable causes at this time of the year is outnumbered only by caring volunteers and big-hearted donors. The story on the front page of the Dec. 14 Record reminds us, too, that not all the caring people are with non-profit charities. Michael’s on Main co-owner Terry Chaney and other Fourth Street businesspeople in Courtenay fill stockings with useful items and treats. The stockings are distributed to homeless people via the Comox Bay Care Society’s Care-A-Van. The Coast Realty Group’s Christmas Hamper Program started the Sharing the Christmas Spirit Hamper Program in 1998, with approximately 70 hampers donated to families in need that year. Since then, the program has grown significantly, with 600 hampers filled last year. United Way is a perennial charity that used donations to assist several worthwhile Comox Valley charities to assist those who need help. Santa’s Workshop is an enduring seasonal favourite that refurbishes used toys and other items to create Christmas presents for Comox Valley children who might otherwise go without. Speaking of which, First Insurance’s excellent Secret Santa campaign connects kind-hearted people with disadvantaged children, who get a Christmas gift to make Dec. 25 a little brighter. Black Press is honoured to run the Pennies for Presents campaign each year. It forwards pennies and other cash donations to the Secret Santa program to help buy gifts for children. The 30th annual Earl Naswell Community Christmas Dinner will be held, as usual, on Christmas Day. The free meal for those who need it happens in the upstairs hall in the Filberg Centre in Courtenay. There are, as always, far more people to credit than space allows. If we missed you, our apology. Merry Christmas to all. Be safe while you’re being merry. editor@comoxvalleyrecord.com Record Question of the Week This week: Thirty-four per cent of respondents so far say they will travel out of the area to visit family or friends during the holiday season. Are you on the move to visit family and friends? Visit www.comoxvalleyrecord.com and vote in the Poll. Eve Every one of the You Are Not Alone Christmas crackers sold and YANA’s annual Christmas tree auction is also being described as a success.
We get winter weather even on Vancouver Island. We hope that wind, snow, ice and/or rain will not interfere with your Christmas travel plans.
COMOX VALLEY RECORD reader Anne Clarkson implores businesspeople and homeowners to clear snow and ice off their sidewalks. PHOTO BY ERIN HALUSCHAK
Please get snow off your sidewalk Dear editor, My daughter Katie and I were stopped for the light at the intersection of Fitzgerald and 26th, happily listening to Christmas music and planning our shopping route when out of the corner of my eye, I saw a pair of feet fly past. A young man had taken a pretty nasty spill at the crosswalk light, sliding on a huge patch of packed snow and ice. I was terrified that he would
slip out on the street into traffic and then horrified to see that the pedestrian was using a white cane. Before we could get out to help he had picked himself up and brushed off the slush, to push the crosswalk button again. Every single one of us has slipped in the snow and ice. It is treacherous enough for those of us who two good legs but for those that have any sort of challenge at all it is life-threatening.
For Pete’s sake, folks — get out there and shovel your sidewalk. Bylaw 1798 states that homeowners and businesses are responsible for snow removal on the sidewalks in front of their properties. If you have a neighbour who simply can’t shovel — pay it forward and shovel their few feet of pavement as well. I promise you will feel good doing it. Anne Clarkson, Comox Valley

Why don’t people get real FIPA facts?
Print actual facts in the newspaper Dear editor, Re: Letter to editor — Chum and Champ should be separated (Record, Dec. 14). I find this letter really quite offensive due to the inaccuracy in almost everything the writer says. Her knowledge of dogs seems to be very limited, therefore I don’t think she should be making assumptive suggestions in the local paper! Chum and Champ haven’t actually been proved to be dangerous dogs, therefore it isn’t right to call them a problem. Also they aren’t wolves, so the pack mentality theory does not apply to them. That is a very oldfashioned view and in any case it would take more than two wolves to be a pack. I have heard that buying pups who are siblings can cause problems so I’m not
surprised to hear that her daughter had some issues with her dogs behaviour but to compare German shepherd crosses to Newfoundland dogs? And I have to question what sort of breeder is crossing German shepherds? They are nothing like each other in any way. I’m surprised and very disappointed that the paper felt the need to publish this letter. I mean, have Chum and Champ not been through enough punishment? Why would anyone want to separate them? It’s time that actual facts were printed in the local newspapers. Have you read the PDF file ‘The truth always comes out in the end’? If you haven’t, you will find it at www.facebook.com/ groups/11458567870 4248. Nikki Robertson, Dunfermline, Scotland

ENOUGH WITH THE dogs! They’ll either be put down, or they won’t, or they’ll be shipped away. That’s all there is! They’ve been getting more ink than the homeless. How about some of the local old grannies devote their excess energy to helping the homeless, and others in need! A GREAT BIG beef to Translink! Translink, has awarded the bid to build a new Sea Bus to a company in the Netherlands. The cost of the new Sea Bus is $25 million. Please don’t try to tell me the shipyards in B.C. can’t build a sea bus. So again here is a great big beef. Maybe our MLA, Don McRae, can look into why our tax dollars are being spent in the Netherlands instead of B.C. The provincial ads keep telling us Canada begins here. Right now it looks like B.C. begins in the Netherlands. Seaspan was awarded the opportunity to build $8 billion worth of naval vessels in 2011, for the federal government. This work hasn’t
started so it would have been nice if the workers could have built the new Sea Bus. It is better to keep our tax dollars in B.C. to employ Canadian workers than to send the money to the Netherlands. BEEF TO THE school board for changing the name of school Christmas concerts to winter concerts. DO YOU HAVE somebody to praise or something you have to get off your chest? COURTENAY, B.C.
Bananafish, Becker will rock The Wave Dec. 31 performances will complete Waverley Hotel’s year of performances in style There will be toasts and treats and hours of tasty beats Dec. 31 in Cumberland. Expect music and celebration Waverley Hotel style with the Bananafish Dance Orchestra. Tickets are limited. Bananafish is an eight-piece powerhouse groove sensation! With a three-piece horn section and a five-piece rhythm section, the music starts playing and the dancing never stops. From Latin to funk, jazz fusion to reggae and ska, this band has been proven to keep you movin’. Its members are all Vancouver Island residents and have either attended or graduated from the VIU jazz degree program. Bananafish Dance Orchestra played throughout B.C, including Vancouver and Victoria with appearances including Rhythm on the Rock last summer. We are stoked to bring their dancy
grooves back to the Waverley! Opening the night is Annie Becker. When Becker sings, people listen. Her soulful, sultry voice and undeniably playful charisma will have your feet tapping before you know it. Her music is flavoured with a blend of bohemian-style pop, a touch of soul, layered on top of a folk foundation. As Annie’s voice booms over catchy musical harmonies, it displays hints of Regina Spektor quirkiness delivered with the power of Adele with a cheerful honesty that remains dominant throughout every note she plays. Although Annie’s artistic journey is one of connectivity and humanity, that collective outlook stands in contrast with the fierce individuality of her music. For more about the musicians, visit www.myspace.com/bananafishdanceorchestra and www. myspace.com/anniebeckermusic. Tickets are available at Bop City, the Waverley or online at www.cumberlandvillageworks. com. Doors open Dec. 31 at 9 p.m. — Cumberland Village Works
Tickets available now for camera club show The Comox Valley Camera Club is selling tickets now for ImageFest 2013 to be held March 23 at the Sid Williams Theatre in Courtenay. ImageFest is a series of slideshows set to music, designed to capture your interest and keep you in your seat — viewing seascapes, portraits, nature, architecture and international images as well as local scenes and landscapes. The 2012 edition of ImageFest was a resounding success,
playing to a sold-out crowd, so everyone is encouraged to buy their tickets early to ensure they get the best seats in the house. Tickets can be purchased at the Sid Williams ticket office on Cliffe Avenue, by phone at 250-338-2430, or online at www.sidwilliamstheatre.com. Further information is available on the Camera Club’s website at www.comoxvalleycameraclub.org. — Comox Valley Camera Club

Clarkson offering musical theatre workshop The stockings are empty, the gifts are opened and you are looking at leftover Christmas turkey for the next week. Give the kids something to look forward to with a two-day musical theatre workshop with Joey Clarkson on Dec. 27 and 28 at the Comox Valley Kung Fu Academy. Clarkson is a popular teacher and performer in Western Canada, with students in the U.K., the UAE and Ireland. Her highenergy workshops are a hit with the younger crowd. The four-hour-a-day workshops introduce the students to voice work, script work, and basic choreography, ending in a short presentation for family and friends. Clarkson has been teaching for the past six years and has recently been added to the prestigious ArtStarts Artist in the Classroom roster, a provincial catalogue of touring artists supported by ArtStarts. “This was fantastic news!” smiles Clarkson. “It will make my workshops even more affordable and accessible, ArtStarts grants can fund up to 60 per cent of the fee for me to bring a workshop to a school group. I hope to be touring extensively in B.C. in the next school year.” “This is an opportunity not many children have available to them and we are so thankful this experience will be part of their life story,” says Monica Yorke, who has had children in Clarkson’s workshops for the past five years. “Joey has worked with our school’s children, kindergarten to Grade 9 on several occasions. Her sessions have been upbeat, informative and provide learners with the extra confidence they need to take their musical and dramatic skills to the next level,” shares Alissa Pratt,

Local, Japanese food returns to Cumberland Erin Haluschak Record Staff Crystal Harrietha is bringing a bit of traditional Japanese culture back to Cumberland. She’s doing so in a homemade, fusion way, served on a plate and brimming with local delicacies. Harrietha is the owner/chef of Crystal’s Place, located in the Cumberland Hotel, and is celebrating the first anniversary of the restaurant which serves traditional-style pub food and Japaneseinspired cuisine. “I love cooking anything. I am constantly learning; (the restaurant) keeps me on my toes,” said Harrietha, who trained for six years as a sushi chef. She explained one of her biggest challenges in her first year of business was introducing Japanese food to Cumberland, but said customers quickly came around to her menu. “Now some of the people who might have hesitated at first are now our best customers.” Harrietha said using local ingredients is important, and frequents local stores and the farmers’ market for many of her veggies. All the dishes are homemade on both menus, and Harrietha noted there are always daily specials and new additions. “The veggie burger is really good, and our rice bowls — which are new to the menu — are filled with all the best parts of sushi all in one bowl.” On a recent lunchtime visit, I was greeted immediately with complimentary green tea and happily noticed a great mix of beef, chicken, fish and vegetarian menu options — even gluten free. I ordered a Veggie Sunomono ($4.50) from the specials board to start, followed by two ‘High Roller’ rolls: the Smooth Operator ($4.50) and the Gardener’s Delight ($5). The appetizer arrived in a bowl filled with contrasting sliced and julienned veggies and fruits atop a pile of thin glass noodles, surrounded by a tangy chilled broth with a hint of
sweetness. The contrast of crunchy carrots and beets worked very well with sliced kiwi and a cube of mango, while the noodles absorbed the delicious vinegary broth. The two veggie rolls (eight pieces each) worked very well with each other as the Smooth Operator provided a creamy filling with avocado, mango and yam, while the latter was filled with crunchy carrot, cucumber, green onion and sprouts and beets, drizzled with a “secret homemade” apple and sweet onion dressing. Dipped in soy sauce mixed with very creamy spicy wasabi, the rolls were fresh, crunchy, creamy and full of flavour. Just as I was filling up, Harrietha suggested I try her homemade veggie gyoza ($7.50), which is also available with pork or tuna. The six handmade steamed dumplings were brimming with shiitake mushrooms, cabbage and green onions and the accompanying dipping sauce provided just the right light flavour to the soft bundles. They are topped with a beautiful array of diced carrots and beets, and pop with the warm, salty, savoury filling. In addition to the dine-in service, Crystal’s Place also offers takeout or patio service in the summer. Harrietha is working with the pub for a

Panto has prince, villain, dames, dog The Magic Tinderbox, a delightfully funny pantomime due to open on Boxing Day at the Sid Williams Theatre, will continue a heartwarming tradition that Courtenay Little Theatre started in 2002. It is 10 years now since the inaugural production for this genre. Each year since, the award-winning community theatre group has produced a pantomime or holiday theatre event for theatregoers to enjoy. The success of the tradition is well known with unbridled anticipation and frequent full house attendances (many of the audience from out
of town) as a constant source of motivation for all involved. With a focus on family entertainment these shows are a gift to theatregoers of all ages as thanks for the ongoing support given to CLT’s productions. Based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen, The Magic Tinderbox script is written by Peter Bond, a U.K. playwright who has more than 20 pantomimes, musical plays and plays for children/ teenagers to his credit. An excerpt from the CLT website gives the plot most succinctly, “The hero wants to marry the princess! The king wants to marry

without the help of our hero! The tinderbox brings a wish-granting dog! What could be better!” Costuming such a production, with multiple costume changes, can be daunting to say the least. However, CLT costume mistress Gail Limber has a group of sewing buffs gathered around her who love the challenge of creating costumes that will fit the period and vision of the director. It is not uncommon to hear great bursts of laughter on Tuesdays and Thursdays as Limber and her crew at the CLT space sort fabric and sew like crazy to

pieces and using props is an important part of that fine tuning. The sight of Derek MacDonell manhandling his “bosom” in a dress he will wear as one of the Dames is hilarious! There are two Dames in this show, which will certainly add to the visual hilarity, not to mention a very big dog, costumed by Val
Heath that is certain to prove a major focus for younger audience eyes especially. The Magic Tinderbox is filled with silliness. There are five evening performances starting at 7:30 p.m. and two matinees, starting at 2 p.m. “This is family entertainment at its best, where the audience is part of the show. So come for chance to sing out loud, to cheer and boo, and to call out that well remembered warning, “Look behind you!” Don’t miss the fun this holiday season. runners headed off into the darkness. A favourite part of the race for Keith was running on a cobblestoned street with a covered mall and a laser light show while crowds cheered. Keith finished 45th overall and second in his category in a time of 3:08:41. Janet was third in her category in a time of 4:08:50. This was her 273rd marathon. Closer to home, three local racers headed down island for the ninth annual Stewart Mountain 10 mile race at Thetis Lake in Victoria. The day was somewhat sunny but the heavy seasonal rains made the mudholes treacherous. The race director was delighted in the knowledge that they were wider, deeper, muddier and stinkier than normal. CVRR coach Kathy Rung was sixth woman overall in a time of 1:24:09 while John Ingram was third in his 65-69 category and Cathy Clark finished in 1:45:06. Many Comox Valley Road Runners are engaged in training for the Frontrunners Island Race Series which begins with the Harriers Pioneer 8K on Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. Many of these local athletes began running by attending the annual CVRR Running Clinic. The clinic is organized by club volunteers who have many years of running experience. The 27th annual running clinic begins on Jan. 19 at 8:30 a.m. in the Lower Native Sons Hall in Courtenay. Potent power play propels Glacier Kings to victory Earle Couper Record Staff
A punishing power play propelled the Comox Valley Glacier Kings to a convincing 8-2 win over the Oceanside Generals in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League action Dec. 18 in Courtenay. The Yetis went 5-for9 with the man advantage and limited the visitors to 1-for-9 on
their power play. Jack Kennelly (first star) scored three of his four goals on the PP. Mitch Ball had a big five-point night with a goal and four assists while Garrett Halls (third star) added a goal and two helpers. Andrew White and Sheldon Brett netted the other Comox Valley goals. The Icemen outshot the Generals 43-19 with Michael Hails
picking up the win. Kiefer Giroux played the first two periods in goal for Oceanside and Alex Mastrodonato patrolled the pipes in the third. The game got off to an inauspicious start when the Generals tallied a power-play goal just 31 seconds into the first period with Halls off for cross-checking. But it was all Glacier Kings after that.
JACK KENNELLY EARNED first star honours for his four-goal perforPHOTO BY JIM HOCKLEY mance against the Generals.
Blazing Balls top the 10 Phat Kids The basement of the recreational dodgeball league was a familiar place for James Sawatsky and his dodgeball teams. But if you want to find them now, you might want to check the penthouse suite. The die-hard dodgeballer and team captain spent numerous seasons chucking and ducking with just a rare win to celebrate, yet would almost certainly be beaming at game’s end regardless of the result. But if there was any question just how much wider his smile could go on a dodgeball night, it was answered when he joyously sprinted onto the court to celebrate after his Blazing Balls team clinched a 10-6 win over the 10 Phat Kids in the Comox Valley Sports & Social Club’s recent championship final. The victory capped a surpising 5-2 regular season and would be considered an upset over the previously unbeaten 10 Phat Kids, who have a history of falling just one win
short of the championship. They will regroup and take a run at it again in the winter season, which starts up in January. The third-place game featured a backand-forth barnburner, with the Chuck ‘N Duckers building up a sizeable early lead only to see The Fighting Amish chip away at it and eventually emerge with a 10-9 victory. The Young Guns notched a 10-3 win over Team Excellence for fifth place and the Thorns & Roses took seventh spot with a 10-8 victory over the Ball Busters. Chocolate Thunder defeated Toaster to claim ninth overall, while the Misfits managed a 10-7 victory over Vicious & Delicious to finish in 11th. Registration is now open for winter sports leagues such as dodgeball, floor hockey, volleyball and indoor soccer. Teams, small groups and individuals can all register online at www.comoxvalleysports.ca by Jan. 7. — Comox Valley Sports & Social Club
Kennelly pulled the Yetis even at 10:21 then put them in front at the 12-minute mark. Halls and Brett upped the lead to 4-1 in the second, and third period power-play markers by Kennelly, White and Kennelly increased the advantage to 7-1. The Generals got one back at 13:57, but Ball had the final word when he tallied his 20th of the season at 15:19 to complete the scoring. The win was the Yetis (13-15-2) second in a row and pushed them percentage points ahead of the Generals (13-16-2) for second place in the North Division. The Icemen played a home-and-home series with the Campbell River Storm on Dec. 21-22, with results unavailable at press time due to advanced holiday deadlines. The Glacier Kings return to action Jan. 3 when they visit the Nanaimo Buccaneers. Next home game is Jan. 5 against the Saanich Braves with game time 7:30 at the Sports Centre.

Leslie passed away peacefully, and hand in hand with his loving wife Gwen, on December 15, 2012, at the age of 95. Leslie was an avid sailor, musician, videographer, photographer and a sketch artist. Leslie was gentle, bright, and fun. We will miss our husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. The family would like to thank all of the wonderfully caring and skillful staff from the Extended Care Unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital, the tremendous support from Veteran Affairs Canada, and the wonderful Dr. David Bowler. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation, under Leslie’s name, to the Comox Branch (160) of the Royal Canadian Legion [1825 Comox Avenue, Comox, B.C. V9M 3M3, 1 (250) 339.2022]

Rumney on B.C. rugby team for Las Vegas sevens The first-ever BC U18 provincial women’s seven-a-side team has been selected ahead of the 2013 Las Vegas International Sevens event. After a series of trials held in Nanaimo and Burnaby, 12 standouts made the cut and preparations are now underway for the tournament set to run Feb. 7-9, 2013. The 12 players, including Samantha Rumney (GP Vanier/ Cumberland) will represent their province in the Las Vegas Invitational High School Girls Sevens division against teams from across Canada and USA. The young women will also have the opportunity to support the Canadian senior women’s national team and witness first hand the international sevens experience amongst thousands of fans at Sam Boyd Stadium. B.C. provincial teams have fared well at the Las Vegas Invitational, with the BC Elite Youth Sevens men’s teams sweeping the Elite and High School divisions in 2012. This is the inaugural year for the women’s program, however, and with the recent hire of BC Rugby Girls Youth Development Officer Marlene Donaldson, further emphasis is being placed on seeing both programs provided with opportunities to compete. “This team was selected from over 45 athletes who attended the trial camps. The selections reflect the strength of club and high school girls programs in Cowichan and the Fraser Valley as well as the pockets of talent that are emerging in areas like Houston and Lower Vancouver Island,” Donaldson said. Sophia DeGianni (Abbotsford), Gurpreet Dhaliwal (Abbotsford), Autum Garrett (Abbotsford) and Chelsea and Mackenzie Fowler (Mission) were all members of the Fraser Valley BC Summer Games U17 Girls program which finished in first and second this

past summer in Surrey. Adrienne Saari (Duncan) also played for B.C.’s U18 provincial 15s team and took home bronze this past August from nationals. “The enthusiasm and
talent of the athletes who attended the trial camps makes what we do worthwhile,” added Donaldson. “To further develop our sevens programs we need these players playing more
sevens and observing sevens rugby at the highest level. That’s why the Las Vegas tournament is such an important event to implement into the pathway for these play-
ers.” Donaldson will be B.C.’s tour manager and will make up the team staff along with two of the province’s elite coaches in Pat Fleck of Vancouver and
Brad Skene of Duncan. Fleck has been head coach of the B.C. senior women’s provincial 15s team and has also served as head coach of both the men’s and women’s Maple Leafs,
Canada’s senior national team development programs. Victoria’s Dr. Matt Mortenson will serve as both team doctor and apprentice coach. – BC Rugby TELUS STORE OR AUTHORIZED DEALER

THE MAZDA PEEWEE A Chiefs Player of the Week is Kevin Franceschini. The 5’,1”, 80-pound left winger’s favourite NHL player is Phil Kessel. The Chiefs continued to work hard at turning their season last Saturday in Nanaimo. They fought a seesaw battle, tying the game 4-4 with 30 seconds left. Unfortunately the Clippers scored with 14 seconds left to steal the win. Coach Harris was more than pleased with the effort and improvement. Sunday saw the Chiefs drop a tough 8-3 loss to Cowichan. The Chiefs wish everyone Merry Christmas.
