ig news events often portray the urgency of a situation and make for dynamic images. But the biggest news stories do not always make for the best photos. While everyday-events are often more challenging to photograph in a fresh way, the effort is well worth it, as the images in this issue will attest. In the past year, News journalist Colleen Flanagan

and a few others have drawn readers into the stories of our communities with their compelling photos. Thru the lens portrays a cross-section of events, from Amanda Todd’s death to the 40th anniversary of the Ridge Meadows Recycling Depot, the 20th anniversary of Thomas Haney secondary, and the end of the strike at Extra Foods, to a fire that destroyed eight new homes, from high school basketball games, mixed slo-pitch tournaments, to Country Fest and Ghost Ridge. We were there to show you what happened. Now we present the best of it all. We hope you enjoy the view. – The News

JACOB, Michael Robert August 1955 – December 2012

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved brother Mike on December 21, 2012 at the age of 57. Mike passed away peacefully with family members by his side at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Mike was born August 1955, in Prince George, BC. He was predeceased by his Mother and Father (Joseph and Alice Jacob) and brother Don Jacob. He is survived by 4 brothers, Joe, Jim (Gayle), Bruce and Mark and by 7 sisters; Pat, Alice, Margaret, Marianne (John), Dorothy (Glenn), Cathy, and Terry (Don), 18 nieces and nephews and 12 great-nieces and great-nephews. Mike was a long time resident of Maple Ridge and worked for many years in construction around Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Mike graduated from BCIT with a diploma in Civil and Structural Engineering. He believed that almost anything could be fixed or made to run more efficiently. Mike’s experience, knowledge and friendly manner earned him the respect of his friends, co-workers, colleagues and clients at Fremar Construction in Vancouver where he worked for many years . Mike was passionate about helping others and always willing to lend a hand. His unfailing optimism was catchy and he was always willing to share his valuable wisdom and advice. Fair and ethical, Mike encouraged the same values in all those he met. In his spare time Mike loved to fish, go prospecting, play golf and seldom missed a Canucks, Lions or Whitecaps game on TV. Mike was a brilliant diamond with a shining heart of gold and will be forever missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends, with whom he loved to spend his spare time. The smiles, the laughter and the happy times will always live on in our hearts. The family would like to thank Dr. Brown, the nursing staff and support workers at the ARHCC Tertiary Palliative Care Unit for all their compassion and expert care they provided for Mike during his stay there. Services for Mike will be held at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 20285 Dewdney Trunk Road in Maple Ridge on Monday Dec.31 2012 at 10:30 am . In lieu of flowers an online donation can be made in memory of Mike, at the bccancerfoundation.com website, for the Abbotsford Cancer Center.
