The B.C. Liberal government has agreed to a $20-million compensation deal that will see Shell Canada give up disputed coal bed gas tenure in the remote Klappan region of Northwest British Columbia. Shell’s exploration of 4,000 square kilometres at the headwaters of the Skeena, Nass and Stikine rivers has been opposed by the Tahltan Nation since the

tenure was awarded by the province in 2004. The company drilled three exploration wells in the first year, which it now intends to decommission as it leaves the area. The province has agreed to provide Shell $20 million in gas royalty credits to compensate for its investment in the Klappan region. That is to be put towards a water recycling project that Shell is building to supply hydraulic fracturing operations on its shale gas developments in the Peace

We’ll be rising from the ashes soon...

River region of Northeast B.C. Coal bed gas extraction has additional hazards because of salt-contaminated water that often surfaces with natural gas when coal deposits are drilled. Hydraulic fracturing can be used in coal bed development, but it is more extensively used in drilling deeper shale formations to extract natural gas. “The Klappan is one of the most sacred and important areas for our people,” said Annita McPhee, president of the Tahltan

The

Central Council. “It is a place of cultural, spiritual, historic and social importance. Our people do not want to see it developed, and we look forward to working with British Columbia on achieving that goal.” McPhee added the Tahltan have received offers of support from local, provincial, national and international organizations in their opposition to the development. Sobering thoughts on giving the gift of safe travel

Choosing a sober driver, focusing on the road and keeping your speed appropriate to conditions are vital ways that you can ensure your family – and others – enjoy a safe season and reach your holiday destinations. Beyond furthering your own health and safety, consider some of the other gifts you’ll give yourself by making responsible choices about driving this winter: • Savings of $600 to $4,000 toward your post-holiday credit card bills! They’re yours when you choose a designated driver, take transit or a taxi, use a volunteer-based safe ride home service like Operation Red Nose, stay in your host’s spare bedroom – or make any smart choice that keeps you from driving after drinking and facing the costly consequences. At CounterAttack road checks, police will be enforcing the immediate roadside prohibitions that have helped to save more than 100 lives on British Columbia roads over the past two years. • A chance to see Santa’s reindeer! OK, maybe they won’t cross the road in front of you. But if you’re distracted while driving – texting, using a hand-held phone, eating, changing CDs or otherwise not paying attention – there’s a good chance you’ll

miss seeing something much more important, like a pedestrian or a red light. Distracted driving is deadly serious: on average, about 117 people die each year in B.C. and 1,400 are sent to hospital because a driver wasn’t paying attention. Talking on a hand-held phone at the wheel brings a $167 fine, while texting or e-mailing also nets you three penalty points. • Having your car in your driveway Christmas morning! This is one gift you won’t enjoy if you speed excessively (more than 40 km/h over the posted limit) and have your car impounded for seven days, or if you drive too fast for conditions and end up crashing. Give yourself enough time and keep your distance from the vehicle in front of you. Remember, the point is to enjoy family and friends when you

get there – not if you get there. • Inner peace!

Nothing takes away from your comfort and joy like losing control

er giggled. “I bet she hasn’t got a boyfriend.” My face grew red with anger. I hated it when people jeered at me for not having a boyfriend. I wouldn’t have minded one, but somehow I had always been avoided. My friend Stacy smiled at me from across the room as the dance ended. I shook from my mind the girls’ mean talk. I pressed my back self-consciously against the wall and watched the dancers, all young kids like me, choose different partners. I couldn’t watch anymore and escaped to the long refreshment table. Did every girl suffer like this at her first dance? I felt oddly like only I did. I sipped the sparkly punch in my glass. It cooled my tongue considerably. I inwardly sighed. I took several shal-

By Elaine Hefer Dear Journal: The large room was stiflingly hot and I felt sweat dampening my armpits. It wasn’t the heat. I was nervous. It was the night of my first dance party. It was Christmas Eve; the prospect of Christmas made me excited but it didn’t cover my nervousness. Standing alone against the wall I watched the lively dancers. I was wearing my red satin dress that my mother had got me on my 15th birthday last week. I was enduring discomfort because I felt abnormally hot and worried. Not far away stood a group of girls, chatting together. I couldn’t make myself go and chat with them; they were talking about me in loud, high voices. “She’s alone,” one said shrilly. “I saw her come.” “She’s strange,” anoth-

low breaths. I preferred deep breaths but my dress prevented me the luxury. I had my back to the dancers and momentarily I heard heavy footsteps behind me; I realized someone was approaching. By the way the feet were forcefully laid down, I knew it wasn’t my friend coming. The footsteps stopped behind me. I didn’t want to turn but I had to. For a moment, I was completely startled. The boy standing before me was tall and lithe. His eyes were a pure, sparkling hazel and his light hair was perfectly combed. I figured he was about 17. He made an awkward attempt to bow. “Can I… Shall we dance?” I breathed slowly. I nodded and he held out his arm. I told myself repeatedly not to trip over my feet.

The dance was a slow one and I concentrated on the steps. We didn’t say anything and my mind was whirling crazily. Finally he murmured softly, “Are you alone, too?” I glanced up at his expressive hazel eyes and nodded. Had I ever seen such eyes before? Slowly I was calming down. So he was a loner too? In my mind, thoughts were still whirling about like the wind, but amidst it all were three solid words that stood firm and protective. God knows best. Save on energy bill this holiday season

BC Hydro is sharing tips that help save energy during the holidays.

• Switch to LED holiday lights. LED lights use 90 per cent less electricity than regular lights, allowing you to light your tree for about a penny a day. To save even more, put your outdoor lights on a timer. • Turn down the heat. Reduce your home

heating costs by five per cent by turning down the heat by two degrees. Use a programmable thermostat to automatically turn the temperature down by five degrees each night for eight hours while you sleep and you could see a 10 per cent reduction on your bill. • Keep your home cozy by maintaining your heating equipment. Your heating equipment

needs regular maintenance to increase energy efficiency and cost effectiveness, and to ensure the comfort of your family and holiday guests. • Blinds or drapes provide insulation and prevent heat loss. Heat loss from windows can account for 10 to 25 per cent of your heating bill. • Use the extra hands around the house dur-

ing the holidays to help you draft proof your home by sealing the gaps and cracks with caulking and weather stripping. This can reduce heat loss by up to 10 per cent. • While shopping for gifts, consider purchasing ENERGY STAR electronics, such as TVs, DVD players and cordless phones. They use up to 30 per cent less electricity. • A ceiling fan can affect indoor temperature by 10 per cent.

LEARN TO PLAY BRIDGE!

Spinning your ceiling fan in the clockwise direction produces a gentle updraft, which forces warm air near the ceiling down into the occupied space. • Close the damper tightly when the fireplace is not in use to dramatically reduce heat loss. If you only use the fireplace occasionally, install glass doors. They act as a barrier against warm air loss up in the chimney and stop the pull of cold air into the home.

Candles and matches Often used at holiday time, these items can create fire hazards, so keep lit candles well out of reach and off of tablecloths or anything that a child could pull down or knock over. Many stores now carry battery-operated candles that can reduce the risk of injury. Place lit menorahs on a high surface and not too close to the edge of a table.

GEMINI

You are on the lookout for parties to go to, as you feel the need to be active, to have a change of air, and especially to be surrounded by friends and family. Despite all this activity you won’t neglect the people around you. CANCER

You really crave a good night’s sleep. Try to go to bed early whenever possible, otherwise you won’t be able to celebrate the New Year with everyone else. LEO

You can’t seem to avoid being the life and soul of the party. On the other hand, you are also very capable of taking charge if things get out of control. VIRGO

This year the holiday parties you attend will be either the biggest you’ve ever seen or the smallest; there won’t be much in between. In either case you’ll be very willing to help.

Safety tips for the holidays A few precautions can go a long way

Here are some simple, timely tips and reminders from the Canada Safety Council. Christmas tree If you’re getting a live tree, check for freshness by tapping it on the ground. Dropping needles indicate a dry, highly flammable tree, so look for a fresher tree instead. Needles should be hard to pull from branches and shouldn’t break when bent between your fingers. Place your live tree away from fireplaces, woodstoves and radiators. Indoor heat dries out fresh trees, so be sure to replenish the tree-stand with water

every day. If buying an artificial tree, make sure it has a label indicating that it is fire resistant. Although this does not mean the tree won’t catch fire, the tree will resist burning and should extinguish quickly. If you are using tinsel, keep it toward the top of the tree and out of reach of pets and small children. Tinsel can be dangerous if ingested. Lights Use

Canadian

Standards Association (CSA) approved lights. Place indoor and outdoor lights in their respective environments. New or old, check light strings for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Throw out damaged sets. Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The lights could short out and start a fire. Don’t overload electrical sockets, and never string more than three

Shell Canada president Lorraine Mitchelmore said the company’s shale gas tenures in Northeast B.C. offer “better commercial and geological prospects,” and sustainable water use is important to that development. Energy Minister Rich Coleman said shale deposits offer much greater gas volumes, in regions where roads and other infrastructure already exist. Aboriginal Relations Minister Ida Chong said the government is looking forward to further “government-to-government” talks with the Tahltan over resource development in their entire traditional territory. Doug Donaldson, NDP MLA for Stikine, said protests against coal bed gas drilling in the Klappan are similar to those directed against the Enbridge Northern Gateway oil pipeline proposal. “People in the Northwest understand the importance of resource industries, but they also understand that it’s impossible to put a price tag on a clean environment.”
