Looking back at 2012

When we sit down and look back at the year that is coming to an end, it is hard to believe how fast it has flown by. As we reflect on 2012, there are a few memorable moments that stand out - some that make us chuckle, some that make us think and some that we will cherish forever. One of the biggest events this year was probably Mother Nature throwing us a curveball with the big storm hitting our community in the summer. Although there was some damage in the Greenhouse and Nursery areas, looking back, we are thankful the storm hit just after close of the store which meant the outside areas were empty and no one got hurt. Same goes for the wind gust a few weeks later. One of the positive things the stormy weather brought to Top Crop was ‘Buddy’. The lovable feline showed up in the nursery on a particularly uncomfortable day - wet, hungry and a bit scruffy, but already wiggling his way into the hearts of Top Crop staff. Months later, he is a healthy weight and has a fluffy, shiny coat, but we still call him to come in for dinner at 5:30 pm every afternoon, making sure he doesn’t spend the night outside. And Buddy wasn’t the only new animal friend this year. A small kitten arrived with a shipment of grain and with tender love and care from our friends at the Invermere Companion Animal Network (ICAN) she prospered and found a loving forever home. ICAN named the little cat ‘Topper’ and we still get regular updates on her well being. Just recently, we found another kitten in the yard and after getting a few good meals and some snuggles at the store, she found a new home in Creston. The pair of robins in the nursery produced another beautiful family as well. We heard our customers’ need for smaller trees and were able to find numerous suitable options.We were also able to introduce many new varieties of trees and shrubs, such as the deer-resistant ‘Bloomerang’ Lilac. Staff got hands-on experience in planting deer-resistant favourites - Barberry, Juniper and Potentilla - in the parking lot beautification project. Another lesson: installing the irrigation system for the new planting. Staff also dug trenches and buried new irrigation lines for the nursery, saving time and delivering more consistent and accurate watering to the plants, resulting in even healthier plants. In the greenhouse, 2012 was the year for our most beautiful hanging baskets, overflowing with gorgeous colours, and we will be increasing our selection even more in 2013. The cool and cloudy June was certainly not a fan favourite, but it was great growing weather for shade-loving plants, such as Heuchera and Astilbes. And during the scorching heat wave of July and August, the heat-loving Echinacea, Rudbeckia and ornamental grasses put on an amazing show. Just like in years before, we saw a lot of gardeners growing what they eat. For them, we introduced the Mighty Mato - even the name is impressive and the flavourful varieties on a hardy rootstock did not disappoint. In 2013 we are adding new varieties. The parking lot and store were busy again this year with many community activities, from the Air Cadets and Arts Council selling raffle tickets to the 4-H Club performing a Sheep Wash and the SPCA hosting their famous barbecues. This was also the 12th year for our ‘Pet Pictures with Santa Paws’ with proceeds going to the East Kootenay SPCA as well. In the pet area, we really focused our attention on dogs and cats and everything they need. We have expanded many of the lines of top quality pet food and introduced some new products, such as Rogz Snowskins and Polarskins jackets. The most noticeable change in the farm area is the newly designed ‘Tack Shack’ equine area with an expanded selection of items for the Western and English rider, from miniature to draft horse. We have tack, farrier supplies, riding breeches, clothing, Western jeans, boots and lots of "horsey" gift items. Of course we still carry the different feeds, salts, minerals, health products and first aid items as well as fencing supplies, troughs and feeders. All of us at Top Crop wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season, filled with lots of memorable moments. Thank you for your support and we look forward to serving you in 2013. Till next time... Alexander Yanosik 1912-2012 It is with deep sadness that the family of Alexander Yanosik announces his passing on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at the age of 100. Alex was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on August 10, 1912. Alex moved to this area in the late 60's where he was best known for owning and operating Alexander's Inn, in Ta Ta Creek for 23 years. Prior to coming to the area Alex was an avid baseball player which lead to his induction into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame on April 27, 1985 for his contributions to the Lethbridge Galt Miners Senior Baseball Team of the 1936-1937 season. Alex was predeceased by his parents; ten brothers and sisters; wife Rose; son Bill; granddaughter Diana; and sonin-law Frank. Alex will be dearly missed by his daughter Joanne; daughter-in-law Darienne; granddaughters Marina (Tom), Melanie (Jim), Christy; grandsons Frank (Emily), David (Tammy); grandson-in-law Dan; great grandchildren Michael (Brandy), Jocelyn, Katie, Gordon, Veronica, Tylor, Alex (Sara), Maddie, Mckayla, Morgan and Olivia; great great grandchildren Jordan and Brayden. There will be no service at Alex`s request. A private family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, for those wishing, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
