Jan. 4, 2012 The City of Grand Forks sent in an application to the government funded recreation program for possible upgrades to Dick Bartlett Park. Options city staff provided included a green gym, a water park and a walking/bike path. The Community Recreation Program was aimed at increasing physical activity through providing greater access to recreation facilities, including trails, playgrounds and centres. *** The Christina Lake Watershed held its annual general meeting to discuss the lake’s riparian area. The Riparian Area Protection Plan looks to establish the development of guidelines for shoreline property and areas. Riparian zones are the areas that link water to land, such as streams, lakes and wetland.
Jan. 11, 2012 Grand Forks residents saw a rate increase of four per cent in the price of electricity on Jan. 1. Policy 1205 was adopted last April by city council because within the policy, it states that since the city buys electricity from FortisBC at a wholesale rate, whenever rates from FortisBC is adjusted, the city will amend its Electrical Utility Regulatory bylaw. The bylaw notes that rates have to be a minimum of 98 per cent of the rates charged by FortisBC for residential homes and that commercial rates are adjusted to maintain competitive rates compared to FortisBC Jan. 18, 2012 The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) has started up a pilot project in the Valmar area of Grand Forks that will see the collection of food scraps for composting. A YEAR IN REVIEW
A Year in Review: BC Premier visits Midway, historic hotels destroyed, damaged in fire Continued from Page 1
The goal of the program is to manage the city’s waste by separating organic material to be composted to reduce the amount of garbage going to the landfill. RDKB solid waste program co-ordinator noted the green bins and beige kitchen buckets would be distributed to the residents at Valmar to use. “We are asking that instead of throwing it in the garbage, we are asking people to separate out food-related waste such as leftovers, baked goods (breads and cookies), muffin and cupcake paper, moldy cheese, rinds and peelings, egg shells, fruit pits and seeds,” he said. *** School District 51 (SD51) decided to join the Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce (BCRCC) to further its communication with the public. Trustee Vicki Gee believed that joining the board would benefit the school board. “I’ve had conversations with a couple of people involved with promoting (BCRCC) in the area,” stated Gee. “I asked why would a community club be a part of something like this and found some of the projects that they’re undertaking are common websites to keep track of events in the community.” The BCRCC aims to build a strong business network that will promote the Boundary Country, and encourages business and community development.

Feb. 1, 2012 The Boundary Museum Society (BMS) requested a service agreement with the city for around $80,000 in funding. This year, revenue for the society is expected to total $43,545 and total operating expenses are expected to be $122,170, leaving a deficit of $78,625. BMS requested that council consider the anticipated budget shortfall for 2012 and enter into an agreement with the society. This would ensure that the area’s artifacts and archival material continue to be maintained and displayed at the museum and in the basement of the Grand Forks City hall.
Perley and Hutton elementary schools were awarded a grant that will continue for a period of three years and will be used to develop the community. March 7, 2012 Grand Forks teachers joined the rest of the province in withdrawing services for three days on March 5. Norm Sabourin, president of the Boundary District Teacher’s Association (BTDA), noted leaflets about the walkout were distributed to students at schools. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) organized a rally on March 6 at Gyro Park, where several speakers discussed the importance of bringing awareness to Bill 22, the Education Improvement Act. “Bill 22 sets a cooling off period and suspends the teachers’ union strike action while calling on the assistance of a mediator,” Sabourin said. “It also implements the $160-million Learning Improvement Fund and other measures that will play a fundamental role in the future of education in our province.”
B.C. Premier Christy Clark, pictured here with VP of Vaagen Brothers Lumber Inc. Russ Vaagen, was in Midway on Feb. 6 to get a tour of the Midway mill.
There were fires at the Grand Forks Hotel and the Winnipeg Hotel. The Grand Forks Hotel was completely destroyed and damage to the Winnipeg was limited to the back of the building. A Grand Forks resident was charged.

Jan. 25, 2012 For the second year, Clearwater, B.C. resident Steve Mullen and his 12-dog Alaskan Husky Adventures team took top honours at the Rail Trail 200 International Sled Dog Race. Jillian Taylor from Rocky Mountain House, Alta. was the first, and only team in the event’s two-year history, to complete the 100-mile (161 kilometre) race with her eightdog sled team. There were five participants for the 200-mile (323-kilometre) race: Christina Traverse and Randy MacKenzie from Fort McMurray, Alta., Gerry Walker from Pierceland, Sask., and Rick Wannamaker and Steve Mullen from Clearwater, B.C. In the 100-mile (161-kilometre) race, participants Jillian Taylor and Steve Taylor arrived from Rocky Mountain House, Alta. Feb. 8, 2012 B.C.’s Premier Christy Clark dropped by Midway’s mill for a guided tour and a discussion on job creation, especially for smaller cities. Clark noted trade agreements with Asia have helped benefit the forestry business, and with it, the small towns with lumber mills like Midway. “It drives up demand, it drives up prices, and then we have a business case to produce more lumber than you otherwise would,” she said. “It all starts with a job, and if that job is in Midway, or if that job is in Surrey, it makes a difference for the entire province.” The Midway Mill, owned and operated by Vaagen Brothers Lumber Inc., aimed to increase its production and add a second shift by the fall of 2012. Feb. 15, 2012 The Grand Forks and Boundary Regional Agricultural Society (GFBRAS) moved forward with development of a mobile meat processing unit and hopes to have it operating later this year. The mobile meat processing unit, also known as an abattoir, will eliminate costs on transportation and stress on animals for local farmers, as well as expand their markets. Area residents would also have access to locally-raised and government inspected meat products, including beef, pork, goat and poultry. *** The City of Grand Forks has taken steps to reduce its carbon emissions but is still short by 30 per cent set by the province. Every community, which factors city operations and not the entire residential portion of the city, in British Columbia had to have a benchmark-starting place when the initiative began in 2007. Grand Fork’s benchmark was 420 tons (925,942 pounds). Feb. 22, 2012 School District 51 (SD51) and Grand Forks schools are working to create an after school program that targets atrisk students from Grades 4 to 8.

March 14, 2012 The historic Grand Forks Hotel has been completely destroyed and the landmark Winnipeg Hotel damaged due to a pair of early-morning fires on March 7. According to Boundary Regional RCMP, police were responding to a report of a fire at the Grand Forks Hotel at about 3 a.m. when a fire was detected at the Winnipeg Hotel on Central Avenue in Grand Forks. Christopher James Cusak, 47, has been charged with two counts of arson, which endangered human life. Police initially considered both cases to be arson due to the suspicious nature of both fires. Grand Forks RCMP’s Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison said while police are “tying up loose ends” in the investigation, they are still appealing to the public. “If anybody witnessed anything suspicious or anyone near those two hotels around the time that we believe the fire would’ve started, if someone could forward and give us information on that we’d appreciate it still,” he said, adding police have already canvassed the area. Police constables first entered the smoke-filled Winnipeg Hotel early on March 7 and ensured all occupants were evacuated prior to the fire department’s arrival and the headed to the Grand Forks Hotel, where it was determined that all guests were safely out of the building and accounted for. Fire fighters fought fires (arriving at the Winnipeg Hotel first) and while the Grand Forks Hotel, the fire department was able to protect surrounding buildings. March 21, 2012 The Grand Forks Airport could see more use in the future with WestJet’s new short-haul carriers. Though still in the planning stages, WestJet’s new program, announced early-February, is aimed towards regional operations that will serve smaller Canadian destinations. At the moment, the local airport is available for 24hour medical evacuations, BC Fire Services use during Continued on Page 9

Continue Christmas generosity all year Three community organizations that work to aid the community – the Boundary Emergency Transition Housing Society (BETHS), Habitat for Humanity Boundary and Whispers of Hope have signed a memorandum of understanding. The three will work together moving forward and makes sense as the three, in one way or another, help with the well-being of the less fortunate. The memorandum was signed, fittingly enough, before Christmas, a time of giving. With all the Christmas lights shining and carols playing, it’s easy to get into the giving mood over the holidays. The Community Christmas Hampers program is on and there are various giving trees around town but what about after the tinsel and lights are taken down and the trees put away or recycled? Volunteers for the Community Christmas Hampers program said that extra food is packed into hampers due to the fact that it is a while from Christmas Day until the Boundary Community Food Bank opens in January and they want to sustain people during that period. The Boundary Community Food Bank says there often isn’t a drop in donations in January, but that is due to the fact that there are donations from December that haven’t been processed but come February and March, there is a noticeable drop. In fact, food donations don’t pick up again to the fall, the food bank says it receives 60 per cent of its donations (both food and financial) in the months of November and December and you can be assured that isn’t the only time people are going hungry. Receiving a majority of donations during only two out of 12 months is much too low. People are to be lauded of course for giving during the holiday season, as giving some time is better than giving at no time but why should the spirit of giving only last during the last two months of the year? Pick up a few extra cans of food within the next few weeks and drop it off at the Boundary Community Food Bank. Giving shouldn’t be only limited to the Christmas season as hunger is a something that is always present.

No resolutions in the new year for me I was sitting around thinking about what sorts of new year resolutions I should make. Should I try to be more active, should I try eating better? It was hard I try to exercise as much as I can, eat a pretty healthy diet – although I occasionally do admit to straying. After a while, I decided not to make any resolutions, after all, people say they try to lose weight and while they may take to the gym in January, chances are, they stop in February, if not earlier. People say they’ll try to eat healthier, and yet they will suddenly binge on candy. The list goes on with the number of ways people try to better themselves, only to fall

off the wagon so to speak. It’s about balance in my opinion. Don’t give up chocolate altogether, eat it occasionally. You don’t have to go to the gym every day, or exercise every day for that matter. By all means, if you are up to it, train for a marathon or triathlon but don’t feel guilty if you aren’t up to the challenge. Instead, promise yourself you’ll take a walk after dinner or lunch.
You don’t have to cut out all the starches in your diet but limit the amount that you are consuming. People make too much out of making resolutions for the new year and then feel disappointed after they fail to keep the resolutions so why bother. Just try to win the little battles and don’t try to win the war. I’m not going to start eating more chocolate but I won’t be scared to eat a chocolate bar. I’m going to continue my usual exercise routine and not add any additional days. I’m going to continue with my regular diet, which encompasses all the food groups anyway. Nobody’s perfect after all.

LETTERS z SENIOR CARE
Kudos to care provider in Grand Forks Editor: Do you hope to be well cared for when you can no longer take care of yourself? Do you want a place where your relatives know you are safe, and living out your years positively? Did you answer yes to both of those? Let me tell you how blessed my husband and I are since we were able to have my father as a resident at Broadacres Care Facility. Earlier this year we had to move from Vancouver to Grand Forks and our biggest concern was finding a care home good enough for my father, making sure he was taken care of just as he had done for our family for years. I heard about the doors of Broadacres being opened on Aug. 1, 2013 and nervously planned a meeting with Rod Gustafson to check out if this was a good space for my father, who suffers from dementia and Alzheimer’s.
The challenges are that my father can be angry, grumpy, and aggressive and the thought of taking him to a new facility scared us because he was doing so well in his current home. Immediately after meeting with Rod and his staff, we got a feeling of safety, a feeling that these people would care for my father, just as me and my family do. We then proceeded to move him immediately. We thought the services we received back home were amazing but now we know that, that was completely false. Since being in a home, my father was coping, since being at Broadacres my father is living again. Since his diagnosis, we have never seen my father this happy and content, and most importantly taken care of with the respect from the staff at Broadacres, as if each patient was their own kin. We are so grateful for the positive and supportive space Broadacres Care Facility has provided for my father and would recommend anyone looking for such a place to check it out. The staff is not only amazing with my father but amazing and supportive to our family as well. Alycia Wybou, Christina Lake

Making Waves – Sinking the Harper Agenda Conference Part II In my previous column I mentioned that I ALEX ATAMANENKO had the fortune to attend a conference sponsored by the Council of Canadians entitled, “Making Waves – Sinking the Harper Agenda.” I talked about a presentation by Robert Chernomas, professor of economics, University of Manitoba, where he likens the current austerity measures being undertaken in Europe and throughout the world to class warfare. The next speaker in the plenary sessions “Uniting Against Austerity: Strengthening Solidarity in the Movement for Economic Justice,” was John Hilary, executive director of War on Want from the U.K. Hilary started by describing how former Prime Minister Paul Martin, toured Europe lecturing how to deal with deficits in prescribing a “Shock Treatment” for Europe. He pointed out that there are similarities on both sides of the Atlantic when it calls for the assault on social fabric and the “shrinking of the state.” This was a good reminder for us of the slashing of transfer programs to the provinces in the 1990s of the Chretien government, when Paul Martin was the finance minister – all in the name of deficit reduction. Hilary also reminded us of Canada’s attempts at the Rio Summit, along with the U.K. and U.S. to get water as a human right thrown out and to have water treated as an economic commodity. He also described how Canadian and U.K. mining companies are forcing natural resources development in other countries, often against the wishes of local populations. He then talked about austerity in Europe, which he likened to the greatest social restructuring in European history. Money has been stripped out of the economies of Spain, France and Greece and other countries, which is, according to him, a recipe for disaster. Spain has a 50 per cent youth unemployment rate, over one million people accessing food banks and a policy of locking up garbage so it won’t be stolen by hungry citizens. Greece is slipping into anarchy while Prime Minister Cameron in Britain has stated that 500,000 public sector jobs are to be cut adding to the 2.5-million workers currently unemployed. Social benefits are being drastically reduced, disability recipients are committing suicide and the first attempt at hospital privatization is failing. At the same time, there has been a five-per-cent tax cut to the richest, while the corporate tax rate dropped from 26 per cent to 22 per cent. After painting this dismal picture,
z In the Spotlight
Hilary offers a solution how citizens can fight back. The first thing to do is win the argument. People need to be mobilized to counteract the spin that somehow the public sector is responsible for this disaster. There needs to be popular education such as the Occupy Movement and we must work with labour. The next step is campaigns, the strongest being at the local level, where citizens stand up for their clinics, libraries and playgrounds, for example. There also needs to be a way of getting back the over $150 billion in corporate taxes that have not been paid and a financial transactions tax needs to be introduced so that bankers can pay for the crises they have caused. Eleven European countries are implementing this corrective measure while Canada and the U.K. have resisted it. The third plan of action is through politics. The structures of power need to be challenged. He talked about European co-ordinated general strikes that were to take place on Nov. 14. According to him, citizens need to unite against the global agenda that challenges our beliefs about what our society should be. They need to unite against austerity and to create a world movement for a better world and future. I agree with Hilary that ultimately, it will be political decisions that get us out of this mess. After all, political decisions are what started this slide that has been responsible for the progressive widening of the gaps between the very rich and the middle class and poor. There is no reason why we should allow multinational corporations to dictate our agenda. We should not be signing trade agreements that increase the cost of pharmaceuticals, prohibit local municipalities from favouring local procurement or that allow those corporations to sue our federal government if they feel they have been unjustly treated. It is not fair to place the burden of our crises on government employees by slashing jobs and programs that protect our citizens and environment. People that make a good wages, whether in the public or private sector, contribute to our economy by buying houses, cars and by travelling and spending money in our local businesses. The best way of supporting small business is by retaining and strengthening well-paying jobs in our communities. It is certainly time for Canadians to “make waves” and to mobilize against the Harper administration. Just as we need to throw out the Liberals in B.C. next May, it is time to mobilize to get rid of this current Conservative federal “wrecking crew” before it is too late. – Alex Atamanenko is MP for the B.C. He was last seen at Grand Forks’ Boundary Hospital in 2010; he left behind his cellphone and backpack and while there have been a number of reported sightings, none have bore fruit. According to Staff Sgt. Dan Seibel of the Kootenay Boundary Regional RCMP detachment, the investigation is still open and the last tips of note occurred in late spring. Aug. 29, 2012 A fire on the afternoon of Aug. 27 at Christina Lake destroyed the residence of Allen Piche a.k.a. The Bear Dude. The Christina Lake Fire Department responded to a call at the Fife Road/Haadlund Road area shortly before 5 p.m. and upon arriving at Piche’s residence, saw his house fully engulfed in flame. The fire department said the fire spread to four adjoining structures, destroyed all buildings and also spread into the forest area. *** The City of Grand Forks approved the expansion of the green bin food scraps recycling program to the rest of the city’s residences. The program would begin on Oct. 1. Sept. 5, 2012 A fire that started on the afternoon of Sept. 1 was contained off of Brown Creek Road East in Grand Forks. Grand Forks Fire Rescue Dale Heriot noted the owner of the property was mowing his field and his mower hit a rock, which caused a spark that started the fire. The fire quickly spread 22 acres (nine hectares). Sept. 12, 2012 The City of Grand Forks received a report on the condi-

Tai Kar Chi: The Art of Natural Movement z From the Hümüh Monastery Contributed
As daylight shortens, holiday lights begin to twinkle in southern B.C. and the temperatures settle into wintry cold. The rhythm of life relaxes a bit at the HÜMÜH Monastery and Life Science Centre in the Kettle River Valley. With the busy days of summer retreat season now past, the monks are spending quiet days going about their work while also learning and practicing an ancient form of moving meditation called Tai Kar Chi. Tai Kar Chi is the art of aware natural movement. As such, it is the forerunner of all the martial arts. But, whereas, the martial arts deliberately harness the energy of certain movements through precise forms in order to deal with obstacles, Tai Kar Chi consciously releases and harmonizes that same energy to enliven the life force of body, mind, and spirit. The wonderful gift of Tai Kar Chi, as taught by Wisdom Master Maticintin, is that it can be enjoyed by anyone, of any age or physical condition, to invigorate and raise the life force in a way that is completely relaxed, natural, and directed by the practitioner’s awareness. There is no right or wrong way to enact Tai Kar Chi. Its only purpose is to help the practitioner experience aliveness and oneness with the ordinary movements of daily life. It’s simply about sensing the rhythm and energy of spirit as

it flows through body and mind. Monks and interested guests at the monastery have been integrating Tai Kar Chi into both their relaxation and work time. Tai Kar Chi movements often seek to imitate those found in nature, like the flowing currents of wind or water, and the motions themselves are carried out with great freedom and spontaneity by each person. The mind’s only concentration is on expressing the natural movement the participant has chosen and becoming one with it. Whether it’s doing dishes, fixing a fence, shopping for groceries, or walking the dog, Tai Kar Chi is a simple and effective way of synchronizing breath, mind, and physical movement in a manner that naturally produces an increasing degree of effortless effort, focused concentration, and relaxed co-ordination. Because of this, Tai Kar Chi actually becomes a natural and healthy practice of living meditation. As the year winds down and a new one begins, Wisdom Master Maticintin and the monks at the HÜMÜH monastery invite you come to Skycliffe this holiday season and participate in a Tai Kar Chi class, or one of the other many retreats offered this winter. You are also very welcome to drop by the monastery and enjoy a couple hours of quiet time on the grounds or in the Forest Temple of Enlightenment. The HÜMÜH Monastery is open to visitors on Sundays and the public is invited to attend the Sunday Service at 9:45 a.m.
Mavis Eleanor Chato 1942 - 2012
CHATO: Mavis of Grand Forks passed away peacefully with a smile on her face in Mexico in the care of a good friend on March 21, 2012, the equinox. Mavis was born in Beechy, SK on January 3rd, 1942. Mavis’ career began as a legal secretary, but became a social worker and for many years worked for the Boundary Family and Individual Services Society of Grand Forks, BC. Among many contributions she led the first new parenting group and played an active role in the development of The Gables housing project. Mavis was well loved and appreciated by her peers, colleagues, and family. Mavis will be remembered for her gentle spirit, intellect, and peaceful kindness. She was an inspiration to many and a model of empowerment. Mavis is survived by her three children: Johl Chato, Ayen Chato, Brenan Chato, her two grandchildren Jasper Sol Chato and Julia Ocean Chato, and her sisters Kathy Rains (and husband Barrie Rains) and Beverley Owens, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A celebration of Mavis’ life will take place on Thursday, January 3rd, 2013, from 11 am - 2 pm at the Anglican Church of Grand Forks.

Forever in our Hearts A million times we needed you, A million times we cried. If love alone would have saved you, You would have never died. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still, In our hearts you hold a place, No one can ever fill. A light from our household is gone, A voice from our love is stilled, A place in our vacant home, Which never can be filled. Some may think you are forgotten, Though on earth you are no more, But in our memory you are with us, As you always were before. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, A part of us went with you, The day God called you home. Your precious memories Are for keepsakes, With which we never part, God has you safely in his keeping, But we have you forever in our hearts. Loved and remembered today and always. Viola Strukoff and family

A Year in Review: Rail Trail 200 cancelled for 2012
Continued from Page 14
be delivered on Nov. 4. It is a move Canada Post said is a cost-cutting measure; the Crown Corporation began shipping mail to Vancouver to be sorted on weekends back in 2010 Oct. 31, 2012 Greyhound Canada Transportation bus services may be reduced or eliminated to Grand Forks, Greenwood and Midway by the end of this year. An application was submitted to the B.C. Passenger Board on Oct. 3 by Greyhound to reduce the minimum frequency of routes throughout British Columbia. Grant Odsen, Regional Manager for Passenger Services for Greyhound, explained that this was due to the reduced numbers of passengers Nov. 7, 2012 There have been new stop signs placed along 72nd Avenue in Grand Forks to minimize the number of vehicles speeding through the street. The three-way stop signs were recently put up at the intersection of 72nd Avenue and Cypress Way after multiple complaints about speeding vehicles and the dangers it caused in the neighbourhood. Nov. 14, 2012 Rail Trail 200 International Sled Dog Race has been cancelled for 2013 due to lack of sponsorships and lack of volunteers. After two years of success Dr. Ruth Sims, one of the organizers for the event and president of the Dog Sled Association, noted issues for canceling this year’s event has to due with funding, redesign of the trail and volunteers. ***
International Forest Products Ltd.’s (Interfor) Grand Forks sawmill was closed from Nov. 10 to Dec. 3 to complete mill upgrades ahead of schedule. Nov. 21, 2012 Business owners and managers gathered together to discuss the formation of a downtown business association on Nov. 13. Carole Lajoie, owner of Value Drug Mart, acted as a moderator to facilitate discussion on the future of downtown Grand Forks and what direction the group would like to head. “The thing that became clear was that we really needed a downtown association and a group that is focused on what goes on in downtown Grand Forks,” she said. The defined area is from 72nd Avenue to 75th Avenue, from Riverside Drive over to 5th Street, with a small portion of Central Avenue to 6th Street. Nov. 28, 2012 Nitrate levels in the city of Grand Forks have been decreasing and are not a major concern according to a recent presentation by Piteau Associations. Remi J. P. Allard, senior hydrogeologist from Piteau Associations Geotechnical and Hydrogeological Consulting Engineers, gave a presentation to city council at a recent meeting to discuss the city’s wells and its condition. As a part of the presentation, Allard noted ground water protection, which is a new mandate from Interior Health Authority, is also a part of future steps for the city. *** School District 51’s (SD51) board of education has announced Dr. D. A. Perley Elementary School Principal Kevin Argue as the next Superintendent of Schools effective July, 1, 2013.

Dec. 5, 2012 A gastrointestinal (GI) bug was suspected at the Boundary Hospital in Grand Forks last week. According to acute health service administrator for Boundary Hospital Cindy Crane, the hospital had to limit visitors and there were a number of suspected cases out in the community as well. Dec. 12, 2012 Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the City of Grand Forks servers and data storages will need to be repaired or replaced over the next couple of years. The current Sun Tape Library and IBM Data Storage Array are approaching its five-year life expectancy, with the Blade Center components and Blade servers approaching nine years of service. To maintain services at City Hall for 2013 and 2014, the city would need to invest around $70,000. Dec. 19, 2012 Two men were arrested and have been formally charged following a robbery at a Greenwood motel early Monday morning, where a female employee was tied up. Charanjeet Singh Khosa, 26, and Ravinder Singh Mettla, 28, from Calgary, Alta. have been charged with forcible confinement, uttering threats, assault, break-andenter, robbery and extortion relating to the incident. According to RCMP, the Midway detachment received a call of a robbery and forcible confinement at 1:37 a.m. Dec. 26, 2012 Large cracks found in the slag pike off of Granby Road in Grand Forks has the city concerned about safety issues. Possibly caused by this year’s spring precipitation and the overflow of water from Overton Creek, city staff are looking to install a monthly monitoring system.
z COMMUNITY
Local organizations work together to succeed
CASSANDRA CHIN
Gazette Reporter
The Boundary Emergency and Transition Housing Society (BETHS), Habitat for Humanity Boundary and Whispers of Hope have signed a memorandum to work together to help the community. The Memorandum of Understanding is an initiative that unites the three organizations as they move forward in the new year for future purposes and planning. Ray Hanson, chair of Habitat for Humanity Boundary, noted the purposes focus on helping people with the basic needs of food, shelter, safety, community and housing. “We see the advantages of working together and we’re trying to move each organization forward,” he said. “It gives us more power as an organization when we go looking for funds because major funders
like to support organizations that are working together.” Hanson pointed out this will also stabilize operations of the groups and enable better communication and collaboration in finding resources. Grand Forks RCMP Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison, chair for BETHS, added it’s the right thing to do. “I think organizations that support similar interests should come together and pool their resources to make the best things happen, and this is an example of that,” said Harrison, noting this idea has been circulating for several years. Chair for Whispers of Hope Jake Raven pointed out resources will also stretch a lot further when everyone works together. A future goal is to find a permanent facility where all three organizations can operate out of that will allow them to share the use of the facilities, such as the kitchen.
