Princeton Weyerhaeuser has been a major industry in and community partner of Princeton and area since 1978. Numerous community events and organizations have benefited from Weyerhaeuser sponsorships over the years. Education of the community in regards to our forestry industry has been provided including the donation of seedlings in which various child and youth groups have experienced the processes involved in the replenishing of our forests. Each year, grants are given to non profit organizations by Weyerhaeuser from the Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund. The giving fund has four focus areas; affordable housing

and shelter, eduction and youth development, environmental stewardship and human services, civic and cultural growth. Most recently, Princeton Rotary is the recipient of a grant from Weyerhaeuser. On Friday, Dec. 21, Jeff Larsen manager of Princeton Weyerhaeuser presented Judy Short, president of Princeton Rotary with a cheque in the amount of $10,000. On behalf of Princeton Rotary, Short extends a huge thank you to Princeton Weyerhaeuser for being such a wonderful support to the community and to all the projects the company takes part in. “We know this could not be done without the sanction of the manager so we would also like to give a heartfelt thank you to Jeff,” said Short.

Many Ways to Recycle Christmas Trees in the RDOS Across the Regional District of OkanaganSimilkameen there are numerous locations to drop off your clean natural Christmas tree. Please remove all tinsel, fake snow and ornaments. Christmas trees collected will be chipped and given new life as animal bedding or compost. Several communities in the RDOS have Christmas Tree collection programs: By donation, the Penticton Fire Fighters Local 1399 will be collecting trees from December 28 to January 16. All donations received will go to the BC Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund and Muscular Dystrophy charities. Penticton residents can call 250-490-2315 to register for collection. City of Penticton residents can also drop off natural Christmas Trees at Fire Hall #2 at 285 Dawson Ave from December 28 to January 31. District of Summerland residents can call the Fire Hall at 250-494-7211 ext 3 to request collection of their Christmas Trees. Summerland Secondary students will be out collecting trees on Sunday, January 6 and Sunday, January 13. Donations for this service will go to the Summerland Secondary Dry Grad. Town of Oliver residents can drop off Christmas Trees at the south gate of the Oliver Public Works Yard at 5971 Sawmill Road. This service will run from December 26 to Friday, January 4. Collection of trees is done by the local Air Cadets.
Town of Osoyoos residents can drop off Christmas Trees adjacent to the washroom at Kinsmen Park (on boulevard) or at the Northwest Corner of the Parking Lot below Sun Bowl Arena sign until Friday, January 11. The Naramata Citizens Association will be collecting Christmas Trees from January 15-19. If you live in Naramata, and would like your tree picked up by NCA volunteers, please ensure it is clean of fake snow and ornaments and place it at your curbside. All landfills in the RDOS will accept clean natural Christmas Trees free of charge. Landfills can accept, free of charge, up to 500 kgs (1100 pounds) per load of yard or clean wood waste. Landfills within the RDOS include Campbell Mountain (Penticton), Summerland, Osoyoos, Oliver, Princeton, Keremeos and Okanagan Falls Landfills. The RDOS does not recommend burning Christmas trees as they are too moist to burn cleanly. Any tinsel, fake snow or ornaments left on the tree will create added pollution. Fine particulates from smoke have been linked to respiratory and heart diseases. The project has been underway for quite some time and these funds will go a long way in helping to complete the project. This money will fund the air intake for the stove and help to upgrade the electrical system. Copper Mountain announces 2013 production guidance Vancouver, British Columbia – December 21, 2012 – Copper Mountain Mining Corporation (TSX: CUM) (the “Company” or “Copper Mountain”) announces production guidance for the 2013 year from the Copper Mountain mine located in southern British Columbia. Copper Mountain is projecting 2013 production of approximately 80 million pounds of copper, 35,000 ounces of gold, and 315,000 ounces of silver. - Site cash cost are estimated to be (incl. mining, milling, maintenance, admin, and engineering) of $1.25 - $1.30 per pound of copper produced net of precious metal credits. (Calculated based on $ 3.40 /lb Cu, $1,500/oz Au and $28.50/oz Ag). Total cash costs (incl. site costs, smelting & refining, transportation, interest and taxes) are estimated to be between $1.80 - $2.00 per pound of copper produced net of precious metal credits. The mining rate is projected to continue at a rate of about 175,000 tonnes per day to provide 35,000 tonnes per day of mill feed. The forecast production is based on a head grade of approximately 0.35 percent copper. Mine site operating
costs are estimated to total approximately $13.65 per tonne milled with mining costs projected at $1.48 per tonne mined. From an operational point of view, the mine plans to continue to mine in both the Pit 2 and Pit 3 areas. Approximately 16 million tonnes of lower grade material will be stockpiled for processing towards the end of the mine life. The Company’s goal for 2013 is to continue to optimize performance of the Copper Mountain Mine, to maximize our copper production. Management plans to continue the exploration drilling for 2013 which will build from the 2012 exploration program. The 2012 exploration drilling has been focused along the western and northern edges of Pit 2, partly to expand the pit limits, test mineralization at depth and to infill gaps within the resource model. Exploration staff are continuing to cut the drill core from the 2012 exploration program and management expects to be in a position to comment on the second half 2012 exploration results during Q1 of 2013. Plans for the drill 2013 program will be finalized after the 2012 results are evaluated.

Benefit your bottom line this year Guest Editorial - Making New Year’s resolutions is a tradition for many men and women. Money can be a great motivator when it comes to resolutions, which may be most successful when they affect a person’s finances. The following are a few resolutions that may not be entirely about money, but can still save you big dollars in the long run. * Quit smoking. In addition to the medical benefits of quitting smoking, saying “so long” to cigarettes can also save men and women a substantial amount of money. Smokers who quit will no longer be spending $9 or more per pack of cigarettes, and quitting may also lower their health insurance premiums. * Pay more than the minimum on your installment loans. It might sound odd to pay more than you’re required each month in an effort to save money, but paying more than the minimum on installment loans, including student loans, mortgages and car payments, reduces the amount of interest you’re paying in the long run, shortening the length of the loan in the process. * Learn about finance. If you have little knowledge of finance and investing, then you are likely paying someone to handle your finances or maybe even storing your money beneath the mattress. Learning about finance, whether you learn on your own or take courses, can help you gain greater control of your finances. In addition, learning about finance can help you grow your money rather than having it collect dust under the mattress. * Eliminate your debt. Some resolutions are more popular than others, and eliminating debt is one of the more popular New Year’s resolutions. But some people don’t realize just how to eliminate debt. While it’s important to save money, high-interest debt should be eliminated as quickly as possible. For example, if you pay off a credit card that charges you 10 percent on your account balance with money you might have deposited into a savings account that earns just 1 percent interest, then you will have gotten a 9 percent return on your investment. It’s important to save money, but don’t do so at the expense of ignoring existing high-interest debt. New Year’s resolutions are not always easy to keep, but those that can positively affect your bottom line may be easier to live up to.

An invitation to attend a Smart Meter awareness meeting Dear Editor; I am writing to make people aware of the Smart Meter Public Meeting that will be held Jan.12 in Osoyoos. This meeting will help people to become more informed about the facts of Fortis’ wireless power “smart” meter and the concerns of the public of possible negative effects. The meeting will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. on Jan. 12 at the Sonora Centre 8505-68th Ave -located three blocks south of Main Street in Osoyoos. A similar meeting was held in Oliver in October that was attended by over 100 people. Many people are still wanting information about smart meters and this daytime meeting will make it easier for people from other towns of the Okanagan Similkameen area to attend. The speaker will be Jerry Flynn who is a retired Armed Forces Radiation Specialist who will explain the background of radiation use, and many of the studies done
by experts. Well over one thousand people in the Fortis area have signed petitions or sent emails to BC Utilities Commission requesting that Fortis be denied permission to install the Advanced Meter Infrastructure Project otherwise known as the Smart meter. Both the Oliver Town Council and the RDOS (Regional District of the Okanagan Similkameen) have recently voted to ask BCUC to deny the Fortis Application. Fortis can not go forward with this project without BCUC ‘s approval. Please come to this meeting to understand the potential health risks and increased cost of power.

Not so Grimm Tales as told by teens

A full house of audience members were treated to a great show filled with humour, truth and life lessons by the Princeton Secondary drama students production of Not so Grimm Tales held at the Riverside Theatre. The students performed versions, “spoofs” of Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Cinderella, under the direction of teacher Karla Friesen. Mother told her version of these stories in an effort to convince her dreamy daughter that no matter how badly she wanted to be a princess, she was a strong and independent young lady who could care for herself and did not need to be rescued by a prince charming or knight in shining armour. It was obvious that the audience enjoyed the show greatly, as the theatre roared with laughter on numerous occasions. Kudos to the PSS drama class—an excellent presentation.

Some homeowners who refused replacement of mechanical meters now worry that they will be on the hook for costs if their old meter equipment fails after they refused the upgrade. BC Hydro spokesman Greg Alexis said the one-year delay, originally signalled in a November finance ministry update, doesn’t change the utility’s target of the 2014 fiscal year to implement the entire system. Meters are only a small part of a province-wide grid that will automatically report power outages and offer customers a real-time display of their power consumption. The Clean Energy Act was the culmination of former premier Gordon Campbell’s climate and energy strategy. It exempted the wireless meter project, the proposed Site C dam on the Peace River, and an array of private power proposals from scrutiny by the B.C. Utilities Commission. NDP energy critic John Horgan has said he supports a review of the wireless grid proposal and other major projects by the utilities commission.

BC Hydro has been given another year to complete its wireless smart grid project, as it nears the original deadline with 140,000 smart meters still to be installed. Energy Minister Rich Coleman announced the extension of the Dec. 31, 2012 deadline imposed by the B.C. Liberal government’s Clean Energy Act. Pushed through the legislature in the spring of 2010, that legislation supports sweeping changes to BC Hydro’s expansion using wind, small hydro and other private power development. In a ministry statement, Coleman cited shortages of skilled labour, meters and other specialized equipment as well as “customer concerns� for failing to meet the deadline for all 1.87 million meters across the province. BC Hydro has been dogged by political and citizen protests about the cost of the refit and persistent claims of various hazards from the meters. Installers have also encountered meters made inaccessible by construction of garages, decks and
