Community Christmas Dinner A crowd of between 200 and 225 people enjoyed turkey dinner with all the fixings on Christmas Eve at the 12th annual Community Christmas Dinner sponsored by local families and businesses at the community centre. Popularity of the event continues to grow every year. There were lots of volunteers and they had a wonderful time working together, said Donna Ellerby. Mayor Susan Samson brought greetings from the town and helped in the kitchen. STEVE DILLS PHOTOS

There were lots of gifts for all the youngsters who attended the Community Christmas Dinner on Christmas Eve, said Donna Ellerby.

- Two paintings of Lakeshore Drive in the early 1900s are hanging in the Sylvan Lake Community Partners’ Association gallery during the town’s Centennial year. The paintings were created by Ada (Faucher) Hagerman while she was a teenager when the street was just a trail. One is at the curve looking west and the other is looking north around the Centennial Park area. Ada’s parents arrived with the Loiselles in 1889 and homesteaded across from where Lakewood Golf Course is today. She was born in Sylvan Lake and later married here in 1921. She lived her life in Sylvan Lake apart from 10 years at Chaplin, Saskatchewan. The association is interested in hanging other artwork of Sylvan Lake’s past in its gallery. Looking back over the past year, as we move into a new and exciting Centennial year, we’re thankful that our pages have been graced by the opinions of many of our readers. The quality of their comments, the diversity of the issues discussed and the interest they’ve evoked in others, have all been appreciated. One of the roles of a community newspaper in a vibrant municipality is to stimulate thought and expression. We provide our thoughts and suggestions through editorials and then open a forum for those who chose to respond or raise their own ideas through Letters to the Editor. At all the newspapers we’ve worked for over a 30+ year career we’ve benefitted from the opinions of others. In Sylvan Lake and environs we find a very engaged community of people who are certainly interested. The list below, of letter writers from the past year, is another indication of the

interest our readers take in their community. It’s a lengthy list. Thank you for taking the time to thoughtfully make your points and let your friends and neighbours know your ideas through our pages. Readers of the Sylvan Lake News have enjoyed and debated the comments, we believe. Albert Martz is reported as a casualty on Dec. 25. Word has been received by his mother. It is not known how seriously he is injured. ♦ ♦ ♦ The curling season opened last Wednesday with a mixed bonspiel in

which 16 rinks competed. Games in “fours” of the main event were played off on Monday, when White defeated Stringer and Clark defeated Dunford. The final game will be played over the week-end. In the secondary event, May defeated Martin in the “fours” and C. Pass defeated Speedie. The final game between Pass and May was played Wednesday evening and was won by Pass. At a meeting held over the weekend, skips were elected and rinks chosen for the season. ♦ ♦ ♦ The workroom committee of the Red Cross will be shipping wool to be made into blankets in the near future. Anyone interested is invited to get in touch with the work room committee. ♦ ♦ ♦

At the I.O.D.E. meeting in December plans were made for making and filling nursery bags for Hong Kong refugees. Christmas plans were made and three Christmas hampers were filled. ♦ ♦ ♦ At Christmas Sylvan Lake Legion remembered six needy families with hampers and 16 senior veterans with Christmas parcels. ♦ ♦ ♦ The coming spring is almost certain to see the provincial election which all parties in Alberta have been preparing for, with varying degrees of intensity since last fall. And this certainly includes the Social Credit party with the government’s announcement of

the program for industrial stimulation and northern development. The Liberals will stand united behind Dave Hunter and the issue of public power. Any dissent that may remain after the Red Deer convention, at which this part of the platform almost split the party, will not be heard in public. The Progressive Conservatives won’t be able to keep up with either the flying Mustang or the pronouncements of their leader Milt Harradence. But his injection into the provincial picture is certain to add a bright and exciting bit of color and could speed up the temp of the campaign. Roger Lebeuf will almost certainly be heard from and his attacks on the government may continue to prompt responses from Premier Manning.

For those who love the game Dear Editor, For those of you who love hockey and are wishing the NHL mess would get resolved; don’t worry … be happy. Come on down to your local arena and watch hockey that is every bit as exciting as what you used to see on TV. Friday night we watched a game that had the players pumped and the fans yelling … the Midget B2 Lakers (short two players) played their nemesis team from Rocky. Sixty seconds into

the game Rocky scored and lit the match to the game that was to follow. Team captain Charlie Carter led the way with a hat trick; Branden Jehn hammered two more goals; and Blake McLean was unstoppable with two goals. The Lakers never let up; their players were on a mission. Rocky valiantly fought back but the writing was on the scoreboard: 7-3 for

Sylvan. This game provided many of us with our hockey fix: we got to see outstanding playing by both teams; tempers flared and players were ejected; the penalty box was full at times but we also got to witness a united team take the game home. Rather than sitting at home watching a blank screen I suggest you look up the game

Notice of Public Hearing PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE COUNTY’S MUNICIPAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN Bylaw No. 1168/12 Lacombe County Council has given first reading to a bylaw which proposes some changes to the County’s policies affecting agricultural subdivisions. Bylaw No. 1168/12 proposes to require agricultural operations to be established on the property for a minimum of three years and be operating at 50% of the proposed capacity prior to the subdivision application being considered. This change was made in order to ensure agricultural operations are established and continue to operate after the subdivision is finalized. This change still provides opportunity for more intensive agricultural operations on smaller parcels of land but the changes would help reduce the fragmentation of agricultural lands across the County. A copy of the Bylaw may be obtained from the County’s Planning and Development Department or by visiting the County’s website at www.lacombecounty.com. Anyone wishing to comment on the proposed amendments will have an opportunity to do so at a public hearing which has been arranged for: Date: Time: Place:

Thursday, January 10, 2013 9:15 AM Lacombe County Administration Office located 2½ miles west of Highway 2 at the intersection of Spruceville Road and Highway 12

If you are unable to attend the hearing, written submissions can be made to the County. You will, however, need to ensure that your comments are received by the County prior to the date of the hearing. Your comments can be sent by email to info@lacombecounty.com, by fax to 403-782-3820 or by mail to RR 3, Lacombe AB T4L 2N3. All submissions will be public information.

Public Notice PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO THE COUNTY’S LAND USE BYLAW

Bylaw No. 1169/12 Residential Lake Area “R-RLA” District Lacombe County Council has given first reading to Bylaw No. 1169/12, the purpose of which is to amend the Residential Lake Area “R-RLA” District to allow for all residences in the Lakeview Subdivision to have the same standard of sewage disposal system. Specifically, the six most westerly lots of the subdivision will require individual, onsite advanced wastewater treatment systems that comply with the standards of the District as is currently required for the remaining twenty six lots. A copy of Bylaw No. 1169/12 describing the proposed amendment may be obtained from the County’s Planning and Development Department or by visiting the County’s website at www. lacombecounty.com. Anyone wishing to comment on the proposed amendment will have an opportunity to do so at a public hearing which has been arranged for: Date: Time: Place:

Delighted - “It’s a Magical Time of Year” was the theme of Benalto School’s Christmas concert when Santa Claus disappeared and then reappeared again, Dec. 19. The school’s students and preschool students delighted with their acting and singing at the Elks Hall. Then a truly tall Santa Claus walked into the hall at the end of the concert with treats for all the youngsters. A social took place following the concert. It was also announced that the school’s students and staff collected over 320 items or about 150 kg. of food for the Food Bank. STEVE DILLS PHOTOS
