Chapman dies on farm in sombre start to 2013

Jack Chapman (left) and Cpl. Dane Graham, both of Stettler, took part in the Nov. 11, 2011, Remembrance Day services at the Performing Arts Centre in Stettler. Chapman, who survived the Dieppe Raids in the Second World War, died Tuesday in a farm accident. He was 92.

Stettler lost one of its stalwarts on New Year’s Day with the death of Dieppe veteran Jack Chapman. Chapman, 92, died in a farming accident at about 1 0 : 3 0 a . m . Tu e s d a y, Stettler RCMP reported as this week’s edition of the Stettler Independent went to press. “Stettler EMS, Stettler Fire Department and Stettler RCMP were called to a farm southeast of Stettler to the scene of a fatal farm incident,” said RCMP Const. Clayton Delowski. “A s a r e s u l t o f t h e i nv e s t i g a t i o n , i t w a s determined that 92-yearold Jack Chapman had succumbed to injuries that he sustained as a result of the incident. Foul play has been ruled out at this time. “Jack has been a longtime resident of the Stettler area and is one of the last survivors of the raid on Dieppe during the Second World War.” For more on Chapman, see next week’s paper.

Dieppe survivor Chapman counts his blessings (Reprinted from Nov. 9, 2011)

JOHN MACNEIL Independent editor Almost 70 years later, the infamous Dieppe battle still resonates with survivor Jack Chapman of Stettler. “That was 69 years ago that we had the raid on Dieppe,” Chapman, 91, said of the Aug. 19 anniversary. “It only took five hours to take the lives of 900 young Canadian boys, and 1,800 more were taken German prisoners. “There’s two of us left in this area — Roy Lincoln is in the nursing home, and I’m still actively ranching seven

miles south of town. I’ve lived there all my life, except for the war years.” Chapman, an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion for the past 60 years, remains an enduring face of a fading generation of Second World War veterans who served Canada. As he does each year, he plans to attend the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Performing Arts Centre in Stettler this Friday morning. “I should be definitely thankful for my good health, after spending three years as a Prisoner of War,” he said. “I’m very appreciative that I’ve been able to have good health and continue looking after 100-head of cattle. “My health will dictate that, but I have every intention of continuing

(to tend the farm). “I have a very good (ally) in my wife, Madeleine.” Chapman came home to his Stettlerarea farm in 1945 and has lived there ever since. Each year, the Dieppe anniversary triggers memories for Chapman. “I’m reminded of the many young men that lost their lives that were close friends,” he said. “Lots of them weren’t from the (Stettler) district, but there’s lots of them that were — there was 41 of us got on the train in Stettler the morning we went to Calgary.” As painful as most of his wartime memories are, Chapman is thankful that he’s able to remember. “Your thoughts take you back,” he

said. “I guess that’s one blessing that you have — that you can remember the things that happened. “I didn’t have effects on my brain from being a Prisoner of War — I was lucky I didn’t have that — but I still have shells in me that were received at Dieppe at the raids. I’ve got lots of wounds.” Some of the wounds might be less graphic, but emotional scars still run deep. “It’s sad to see your friends gradually leave, but that’s the process of life, I guess,” Chapman reasoned. “I kept closely associated with the ones that were in the district. We were friends then, and we’re still friends, or were until their passing.”

Board grants Bailey five-year extension to lead Clearview LES STULBERG Independent reporter At the board meeting on Thursday, Dec. 20, Clearview School Board trustees voted narrowly in a 4-3 decision to reappoint John Bailey to the position of superintendent for a five-year extension. The point of contention in the discussion of the motion was the length of term. Some trustees expressed concern that five years was too long of a term. Trustee Peter Simons suggested “a friendly amendment” to the motion for a two-year extension, but that was defeated. Trustee Karen Holoway said a five-year term shows a good long-term commitment and gives stability to the school division. The board plans to prepare a new contract with Bailey and send a notice of “intent to re-appoint” to the Minister of Education for approval — as per the requirements of the School Act. In the future, the Clearview board meetings might be webcast for

public viewing. By a unanimous motion, trustees voted to have administration investigate the feasibility and cost of webcasting the public portion of board meetings, and report back to the board. The school board considered a number of measures aimed at improving board transparency. It decided to post the remuneration, benefits and expenses of the board trustees, and the expenses of the superintendent and secretarytreasurer on the division website, beginning in February 2013. The board considered draft policies that would see the board agenda package made available to the public prior to meetings. The board received a request from an Emmerson Acres resident for busing to be provided. Bailey said the parent believed it was a Clearview bus in the area, but the bus actually belonged to the East Central Catholic Schools. Bailey said that because the parent’s letter was addressed to the board, the board chair would send a response, outlining the information regarding the bus and that the earliest the board would even be able to consider busing in that area would be September 2013.

A GREEN TIP: “Five green New Year’s Resolutions” All of these simple things will save you money and help our planet. 1. Shut off the lights when you leave the room. 2. Use electricity during non-peak hours (i.e. dishwasher late at night). Rates are cheaper and there is less pressure on our electrical system. 3. Eliminate the use of paper towels in your house. Use rags that you wash or throw out. 4. Don’t idle your engine. After 10 seconds, it wastes fuel and pollutes our air. 5. Reusable bags. Use them every time you go shopping. No one can do everything. Everyone can do something.

A 17-year-old Stettler girl, Koralea Boettger, died last Feb. 11 after the 2011 Dodge Ram pickup truck in which she was a passenger crashed into a stand of trees off a gravel road about five kilometres outside of Stettler.

Police say driver impaired in crash that kills Stettler Grade 12 student Koralea Boettger, a member of the 2012 graduating class at William E. Hay Composite High School in Stettler, died in the early-morning hours of Feb. 11 after the pickup truck in which she was a passenger left a rural road just outside of Stettler and rammed into a stand of trees. Boettger was 17. The only other occupant of the truck was the driver, Trevor James Dahl, the 19-year-old facing multiple charges in connection with the case. Police believe speed and alcohol were factors in the single-vehicle crash off Township Road 39-2, a gravel road about five kilometres northwest of Stettler. RCMP said the driver was “highly intoxicated. In early February, the RCMP reported an assault against a 13-yearold Stettler girl who fought off a male who grabbed her on the street shortly after 6 p.m. “The girl was able to think quickly and delivered a hard kick to the suspect’s left leg, said Sgt. Duncan Babchuk. “Her actions caused the suspect to release the girl and she was able to run away. Town of Stettler planned to commit nothing more than its garbage to the County of Stettler’s proposed syn-gas plant that’s expected to begin construction late in the year. Town

officials said they’re not sold on the plant, which uses a system called pyrolysis to produce a gas from garbage to generate power. Faye Blakely retired after 27 years with Stettler and District Family and Community Support Services, including the past 17 as administrator. Rev. David Lilly became the new pastor of Grace Fellowship Baptist Church in Stettler. The church welcomed Lilly and his wife, Elizabeth. The County of Stettler presented its annual service awards to Sharon and Eldon McCrindle, Ed and Vivian Bennett, Gordon and Carol Yates, Ralph Kirkpatrick, Lorne and Pat Parkin, Bob Erickson and Julie Hebbs, and the Botha youth award to Mackenzie Hankins. The county handed out nine awards in celebration of volunteers in agriculture, culture and recreation. Clearview School Division might consider steps to restructure its ward boundaries, after new census data is made available later in 2012. It would “ensure more equal representation. Construction of the $350-million Halkirk wind farm has the County of Paintearth officials so excited that

they called the county “the energy capital of east-central Alberta. Stettler filed its bid for the Small Town Saturday Night contest. One Alberta community earns the right to host a mini Big Valley Jamboree in the spring, with top country music performers from the province. Heartland Youth Centre faces a $25,000 funding shortfall this year that could force the organization to dip into limited reserves to keep programming alive at the popular Stettler facility. The shortfall is because of cutbacks in funding from the Stettler and District Family and Community Support Services. The youth centre has received a funding commitment from the Town of Stettler, with a dollar figure to be determined at a later date. Health, recreation and business were listed as the top priorities for the Town of Stettler, as part of town council’s strategic planning. The town also plans to revise its mission statement, which declares that the town “will provide a high quality of life for our residents and visitors through leadership and the delivery of effective and affordable services that are socially and environmentally responsible.

Students go on reckless rampage As a two-day school break began in early March, two Grade 10 students went on an overnight rampage and caused more than $5,000 worth of damage to William E. Hay Composite High School, reported Stettler RCMP. Police said the 16-year-old boys were caught in the act at about 3 a.m., after the school’s maintenance director advised RCMP of an alarm alert and a suspected break and enter. Clearview School Division continues to face challenges of limited funding and declining student enrolment, while still trying to maintain quality education. Trustees and administration have started planning for the next school year, and the current trends are under consideration. “Our goal is to provide a very high quality of education for all students,” said Clearview board chairman Ken Checkel. “This is becoming more challenging, as declining enrolments and increased operational costs put pressure on our financial resources.” Stettler and Bashaw have been selected as two of the 10 finalists for the Small Town Saturday Night contest. The winner earns the right to host a concert in partnership with Big Valley Jamboree, held each summer in Camrose.

Aubrey Brown became the executivedirector of Stettler Regional Board of Trade and Community Development. Brown, a former publisher of the Stettler Independent, succeeded Keith Ryder, who led the board of trade for four years. After losing the lower part of his right leg in a farming accident in November 2011, Erskinearea farmer Larry Stevens received more than $20,000 from a benefit dinner and auction at the Erskine IOOF Hall. A modern seniors’ recreational centre, with more space and better accessibility for parking and wheelchairs, was the overwhelming priority expressed during two community planning sessions. Seniors said that the current Stettler and District Senior Citizens Drop-in Centre Association on 48 Street — in an industrial area — is no longer feasible and outdated. As signs of a provincial election were imminent, the campaign unofficially started in the Drumheller-Stettler riding as Wildrose candidate Rick Strankman of Altario met with Stettler-area voters. Conservative government that has been in power for 40 years, most recently under new leader Premier Alison Redford. Wildrose is most concerned about recent land-use bills that the party believes takes away rights of property owners. Although the Stettler Alliance Church had planned to double the size of its facilities on Highway 12 at the western gateway to town, the congregation might have to move. The Town of Stettler council advised that further expansion of the church wouldn’t be permitted, as the town wishes to return the land designation to prime highway commercial. After much speculation and anticipation, voters in Alberta head to the polls in a provincial election set for April 23. DrumhellerStettler incumbent and Progressive Conservative cabinet minister Jack Hayden faced initial challengers Rick Strankman of the Wildrose Party and Aditya Rao of the New Democratic Party as the first names of the ballot. Lacombe-Ponoka PC MLA Ray Prins announced he won’t seek re-election. Prins was fingered for taking home $18,000 a year while chairing a committee that never meets. THE STETTLER INDEPENDENT — 2012 RECAP

Wildrose wins Drumheller-Stettler, but PCs retain power with majority (Reprinted from the Stettler Independent, April 26) There’s a new MLA in Drumheller-Stettler. Altario farmer Rick Strankman of the Wildrose party knocked off Progressive Conservative incumbent Jack Hayden of Byemoor in Monday’s provincial election, but the PC government swept to power with another majority government. Strankman topped the Drumheller-Stettler polls with 7,451 votes, while Hayden garnered 6,573 and lost the seat he held since 2007. “For me, it was bittersweet,” said Strankman, a 58-year-old farmer. “I hoped Wildrose would have had stronger support from Albertans.” It was clearly a two-horse race in Drumheller-Stettler. Distantly behind the front-runners were New Democratic Party candidate Aditya Rao, with 416 votes, Liberal Cam Roset with 362, and Andrew Berdahl of the Alberta Party with 282. Disappointed with the loss, Hayden announced it would be his “last election,” after a long public-service career that began decades ago when he was first elected to the County of Stettler council. “I look forward to private life, so I can now spend more time with my family,” said Hayden, 61, who was first elected MLA in a byelection in June 2007 and served in cabinet in three posts — agriculture and rural development, infrastructure, and more recently tourism, parks and recreation. After a landslide victory in the previous provincial election in March 2008, Hayden knew it would be closer

and more competitive this spring, especially with the upstart Wildrose party in its first election. “You’re always disappointed in a loss,” Hayden said. “But that’s what happens in a democracy.” Hayden was “delighted” that the PC party swept to power with 61 seats under Premier Alison Redford, while the Wildrose and leader Danielle Smith won 17. The Liberals under leader Raj Sherman picked up five seats, while the New Democratic Party and leader Brian Mason won in four ridings. For the popular vote, the PC party received 44 per cent, followed by the Wildrose with 34. Hayden believes property rights — with bills 19, 24, 36 and 50 — were the key factor in his loss. “I think land issues were a big issue and I think there were a lot of people who wanted a more basic change,” he said. As the MLA for the past five years and a cabinet minister in multiple roles, he was proud of what he has contributed to communities and to the government. “If I look back at it all over the last five years, I’d have to say it’s probably the two new schools and the modernization of six others that are the highlights for me, the five new seniors’ lodges in the constituency, three new fire halls, and a lot of infrastructure,” Hayden said. “Those are the things I know serve the people very well. Those are the things I’m proud of that will last and serve the communities a long time.” Hayden was gracious in defeat. “I phoned Mr. Strankman and congratulated him,” he said at the Rowley community hall. “It’s such an honour and a privilege to represent

people as an MLA. I served in three portfolios, so it’s an amazing way to serve the community, and I’m sure Mr. Strankman will enjoy it a great deal.” In response, the MLA-elect was grateful for the words from Hayden. “It was the choice of the people,” Strankman said. “I will bring forward, to the best of my ability, the Wildrose policies to the people of Drumheller-Stettler and listen to them to bring their wishes and concerns to the legislature.” Strankman, too, said the property-rights bills were the issue that swayed the constituents’ votes to the Wildrose, which had pledged to rescind those bills if the new party were elected to govern. “Locally, I think property rights was an important issue for voters and it resonated more with rural people,” said the new MLA. In the local riding, the Wildrose won support from the rural divisions and the Drumheller area, while the PCs won the Stettler area, Castor and Oyen. As an MLA in Opposition, Strankman believes he can still help local communities effectively. “I view this as a double-edged sword,” Strankman said. “With a strong voice in Opposition, a conservative voice, there may be a reinvigorated effort for the party in power to achieve in an area they lost.” Hayden wasn’t the only cabinet minister who lost in Monday’s election. Among others who were bumped were Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Evan Berger, Transportation Minister Ray Danyluk and Energy Minister Ted Morton.

Rick Strankman and his wife, Diane, were all smiles April 24 after the Wildrose party candidate defeated Drumheller-Stettler incumbent Jack Hayden of the PCs.

On the campaign trail, Strankman pledged change, wiser spending and “a better province,” as he met with 40 supporters in Stettler. Wildrose leader Danielle Smith also visited

St. George’s Anglican Church in Stettler honoured minister Rev. Jack Schulze, who retired after 20 years in full-time ministry. Stettler-and-area community leaders voiced concerns about new limits on the accessibility of Service Canada services in town. During a campaign stop in the Drumheller-Stettler riding, Premier Alison Redford pledged to upgrade schools and education. She also endorsed cabinet minister and local PC candidate Jack Hayden. The Stettler RCMP head has proposed new bylaws for the Town of Stettler, with heavier fines and stricter

regulations for drinking establishments, that could set new and higher standards for life and behaviour in the community. “People aren’t getting the message (about the dangers of drunk-driving),” said Sgt. Duncan Babchuk. “This is where we feel Stettler is behind (in its efforts) to make and keep a safer community. We need to move forward to keep up with other municipalities.” Snowy and cool weather attracted between 2,500 to 3,000 people indoors to the 32nd annual Stettler and district trade show at the Stettler Recreation Centre. More than 100 exhibitors from Alberta promoted their products and services. Rick Strankman of the Wildrose party became the MLA for the DrumhellerStettler constituency when he unseated incumbent

u

PC MLA Jack Hayden of Endiang in the April 24 provincial election. Strankman topped the polls with 7,451 votes, ahead of Hayden with 6,573. Far behind were Aditya Rao of the New Democratic Party with 416, Liberal candidate Cam Roset with 362, and Andrew Berdahl of the Green Party with 282. “For me, it was bittersweet,” said Strankman, 58, a farmer from Altario. Provincially, the PC party won a majority with 61 seats under rookie Premier Alison Redford, while the Wildrose captured 17 seats under Danielle Smith. The Liberals won five ridings, and the NDP took four. Stettler Alliance Church could be on the move. Church leaders opened their lot on Highway 12 to accommodate highway commercial land development for the Town of Stettler.

Premier Alison Redford and Drumheller-Stettler PC candidate Jack Hayden greet supporters during a campaign stop in Drumheller last April. Redford won a majority, but the long-serving Hayden lost his seat.

As the April 24 provincial election campaign began to heat up in early April, the two front-runners in the Drumheller-Stettler constituency had opposing opinions on the contentious issue of property rights. Incumbent MLA and Progressive Conservative candidate Jack Hayden stood firm on government policies, despite contrary comments from challenger Rick Strankman of the new Wildrose party. Hayden remained confident that new bills on property rights would protect local property owners, though information from Strankman and his fledgling party suggested otherwise.

Stettler woman shot roadside before gunman kills himself Krista Dryden of Stettler sustained a gunshot wound early in the morning last May 28 while walking alongside Highway 12 on the outskirts of town. Dryden was taken to hospital in Stettler and later Calgary, but she didn’t suffer life-threatening injuries, police reported. “It was a random incident,” said RCMP media-relations officer Doris Stapleton. RCMP said the gunman later killed himself after an eight-hour standoff with police just east of Castor. The gunman was identified as Red Deer funeral director Dustin Goddu, a father of two children. Police found his body in a wooded area near Fleet. “Every effort was made by police to end this (incident) in a different way,” Stapleston said. Schools in the region were locked down for parts of the day. Town of Stettler Mayor Dick Richards said the shooting in town was “shocking,” but that he believes Stettler remains a safe community. “(But) you can never be prepared for a random act of violence,” Richards said. William E. Hay Composite High School in Stettler celebrated the graduation of 131 Grade 12 students. It was a doubly special ceremony for longtime William E. Hay principal Norbert Baharally, whose daughter Alicia was among the graduates. Stettler product Barb Clark Parolin was among nine Albertans, and the lone female, inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in the 2012 ceremony at Red Deer. Clark Parolin, 53, said her passion for swimming began during her childhood years in Stettler. She went on to win a bronze medal in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal in the 4x100-metre freestyle relay. “Stettler is home in my heart,” said Clark Parolin, who has been a teacher in Leduc for the past 32 years. Her father, Earl Clark, was the Stettler high school principal for eight and a half years, before the family left the community in 1978.

Stettler product Barb Clark Parolin, an Olympic bronze-medallist in 1976, was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame last May at Red Deer. During an open house in Stettler, Crowfoot MP Kevin Sorenson expressed his opposition to planned cuts that would reduce Service Canada hours to one day in Stettler. In his 25th year with the Town of Stettler, chief administrative officer Rob Stoutenberg received a provincial award of excellence from the Society of Local Government Managers. Stoutenberg began his administrative career with the Stettler municipality in May 1987.

Ethel Williams received her 70-year pin as a longtime member of Victoria Chapter 14 Order of Eastern Star, which celebrated its 99th year.

Central Alberta Catholic Schools superintendent Stephen MacKenzie died May 8. He was 55. An overflowing crowd attend MacKenzie’s funeral at Vermilion Regional Centre. “There was not an empty seat in that large facility, which showed the high esteem held for Stephen,” said Sheldon Gallagher, principal of Stettler’s Christ-King Catholic School. “The hockey team that he coached entered as a group, wearing their hockey jerseys. It was touching.”

Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith appointed newlyelected Drumheller-Stettler MLA Rick Strankman as critic for tourism, parks and recreation. Strankman announced that he plans to open the downtown Stettler office that was formerly occupied by his predecessor, Jack Hayden.

Seniors trying to find a new home for the Stettler seniors’ drop-in centre determined that the Stettler Recreation Centre conference room is “the best site.” It was the conclusion of a fact-finding project that involved the Town of Stettler, County of Stettler and seniors’ groups.

Christ-King Catholic School students celebrate the official opening of the school’s new playground facilities last June, the final month of the 2011-12 school year.

JUNE

Stettler trainer courts Triple Crown honours Stettler might have had a hand in horse-racing history as native son Larry (Thumper) Jones worked on the Canadian-owned horse “I’ll Have Another” that was in line to become the first winner of the Triple Crown since 1978. Jones, an experienced equine chiropractor based in Texas, helped the horse win the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, and to get ready for the Belmont Stakes in New York last June. Just hours after Jones worked on the horse for the potentially historymaking race, however, “I’ll Have Another” was scratched after getting tendonitis in one of its legs. Heartland Youth Centre and supporters raised more than $80,000 at the 20th annual Awesome Auction, with a special Night in New York City as the theme for the evening. A new seniors’ drop-in centre in the Stettler Recreation Centre conference room could be less than two years away, say seniors and municipal leaders eagerly working on the

project. That room would replace the old centre, which is in an industrial part of town in a facility that seniors say isn’t feasible and practical. With the battle against cancer growing, the fourth annual Stettler Relay for Life raised about $130,239.07, below last year’s figure of $163,000. This year’s event attracted 28 teams (255 participants). The Town of Stettler announced a $20,000 contribution to the campaign for a new skatepark. “We hope to get the construction started in the spring of 2013,” said Danny Missikewitz, a member of the Stettler Skatepark Association. True to their pioneering roots, with faithful resilience, Warden Ladies’ Group celebrated its 75th anniversary with an old-fashioned picnic last June. Originally known as the Warden Ladies’ Social Credit Group, it was formed in 1937 when Minnie Billington suggested the organization during the Great Depression. The group now has 17 members,

including longtimers Dora Reinbold since the 1950s and Mary Muhlbach since 1956. “Not much has changed over the years ...,” said group president Joyce Gordon. “It is friends helping friends (ajnd) supporting neighbours like extended family.” Campus Alberta Central opened its doors in Stettler to provide another opportunity for post-secondary education. Located beside Stettler Oil and Gas, the centre was established in collaboration with the Town of Stettler, Stettler and District Family and Community Services, Clearview School Division, Stettler Adult Learning, Red Deer College and Olds College. Construction of the Points West Living complex in Stettler remained on target to open in May 2013. The seniors’ home for “affordable supportive living” is on 70 Street at the corner of 44 Avenue. The complex is slated to accommodate 88 supportive-living units, along with 16 independent-living suites.

JULY

Big Valley train station signals 100 years Amid bright blue skies and waving red-and-white Canadian flags, patriotic folks gathered at Big Valley to celebrate the centennial of the Big Valley train station on the 145th birthday of Canada and the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s coronation. The Alberta Prairie steam engine rolled into the village in grand style, adorned with flags and banners. Donalda was in the spotlight as about 1,000 people celebrated the village’s centennial on the Canada Day weekend. Now with a population of 259, the village was incorporated on Dec. 30, 1912. At 96, Rosie Vallet and Don McKay were honoured as the oldest residents. Halkirk stepped back in time as more than 800 people celebrated the community’s centennial. The village also unveiled the second edition of the history book, Halkirk Home Fires, an update of the volume released in 1987. A building boom in the town and county of Stettler continues, with the Points West Living seniors’ complex on 70 Street as the major residential project. Commercial development is shaping up, with a new Co-op convenience store, gas bar and car wash, renovations to Sobeys and expansion to Performance Fitness and John’s Clothing and Shoes. Industrially, major projects include Stettler Oil and Gas and ENR Distribution. A 20-minute rain and hail storm flooded Stettler streets on July 18. Within two hours after the storm began, streets in the town were “back to normal,” crews reported. Hail in the town was from pea-sized to quarter-sized. No major basement floods or property damage were reported. Hailstones the size of walnuts were reported in the Buffalo Lake area and near Red Willow and Donalda, as 55 claims for crop insurance in the region were reported to Agriculture Financial Services Corporation. Stettler high school graduate Michael Lomenda, 32, stars in Jersey Boys, an award-winning production that has toured internationally, including Alberta stops in 2012.

The Alberta Prairie steam train approaches the 100-year-old Big Valley train station as part of anniversary celebrations on Canada Day weekend. A Royal Canadian Legion colour guard, RCMP and a piper greet the train.

Children clad in Canadian colours showed their national pride during Canada Day weekend, waving flags at celebratory events in Stettler (left) and Big Valley (right).

Stettler FC won the provincial Tier 4 under-18 boys’ rural soccer championship July 8 at Three Hills. Stettler blanked host Three Hills 2-0 in a sweltering-hot final.

Stettler natives Adam Ternes (left), Dylan Houston and Scott Ternes formed an offensive line as the Red Deer IROC Chiefs won the provincial minor midget AAA hockey title in Calgary. IROC beat the Red Deer Northstar Chiefs 6-2 in the final.

Big Valley’s Ty Mappin and the Red Deer Optimist Rebels captured the Telus Cup national midget AAA hockey championship at Leduc in dramatic fashion. They came back from a 5-1 deficit to beat the Quebec champions 6-5 in double-overtime.

Botha product Alana Skocdopole, a former Stettler high school student who transferred to Notre Dame in Red Deer to compete in elite swimming, made big strides in 2012. The Red Deer Catalina swimmer qualified for the Canadian Olympic trials in Montreal — before her 18th birthday. She now swims with the University of Calgary.

Nine things to do when the new year arrives People across the globe anxiously await the arrival of the new year. Different cultures and religions celebrate their own new year at different times, but for much of the world, January 1 marks the date for change and renewal. With so much emphasis placed on what people will be doing for the last day of the year, little thought may be given to what to do after the clock strikes 12. Each minute afterward opens up the possibilities to begin fresh with new goals and tasks. For those wondering how to commence the new year, there are many ways to tackle the first day and thereafter — after you have recovered from the New Year’s Eve celebration, that is. • Take down holiday decorations. While there are some people who prefer to leave up their Christmas decorations until after the celebration of the Epiphany, or Three Kings Day, by January 1 many are ready to say goodbye to the holiday season for another year. Having the day off of work and school enables you to spend time removing decorations from the house and taking down the tree, especially before driedout pine needles become more than you can handle. • Shop postholiday sales. After spending several months buying for every person on your list, this could be a time that you focus on picking up some things for yourself or the household. Stores may need to liquidate holiday stock and other inventory to make room for spring styles. Many shoppers find the deals hard to pass up when shopping in the early days

of January. Check online to comparison shop, and scour the Internet for any printable coupons that can earn you even bigger discounts. • Visit family and friends. This time of year may be happy for some, but for those far from members of the family or seniors who may have lost many close companions, the winter and post-holiday season could bring on the blues. Visiting extended family you may not have seen during the holidays is one way to pass the day. You also can volunteer some of your time at a senior center or assisted-living facility to spread some post-holiday cheer. • Discard expired foods and medicines. Take this opportunity to throw out any medications that expire this year, which will give you a head start on spring cleaning as well. Toss out old makeup and cosmetic products and make a list of new items to buy. Also, take inventory of the refrigerator and freezer, cleaning out any items that are no longer recognizable or that are past the recommended date. • Head to the movies. Go to the movie theater and take in a flick with the family. January is not the most active time for new releases, but there are some films released in the first month of the year. You can enjoy a lazy day with some cinematic magic and a bag of popcorn. • Make a folder to store tax preparation paperwork. Tax sea-

son is just around the corner. Use this time to collect any paperwork you already may have received and put it in a safe place. Expect new statements of past earnings, any information about interest earned on bank statements and other pertinent tax documents to start arriving. Also, if you use an accountant to help file your taxes, call his or her office and book an appointment before his or her schedule fills up. • Watch a football game. After weeks of running around at a break-neck pace, use this day to lounge around and recharge. Chances are you can find a football game on television. Order in a pizza and cheer on your favorite team. • Encourage the kids to put down the toys and pick up a book. Many students will be returning to school soon after an extended winter recess. Have them get back into the swing of things by brushing up on lessons last touched on in December. • Host a post-holiday pot luck. Clean out the refrigerator of those salvageable leftovers from your New Year’s Eve bash. Invite others over with their own foods and host one last party before you have to get back to the daily grind. There are many ways to start off the new year on the right foot. Get a head start on cleaning or organizing, or relax once more with friends and family.

Follow method to pick resolution you can keep New Year’s resolutions may have varying degrees of success, but even those people who find it difficult to keep their resolutions year after year still tend to make a new resolution once the hour of midnight chimes. Though it may seem as though resolutions are made to be broken, resolutions can be the first step many people take toward a happier and healthier life, making them more than just a silly annual exercise in empty promises. A common hurdle many people must clear when making a New Year’s resolution is choosing the resolution itself. Resolving to become a millionaire in the next 12 months is likely unrealistic, as is taking on the same resolution you made last year that proved unsuccessful. Before making a New Year’s resolution this year, consider the following tips aimed at helping you choose a resolution that has a chance to be successful. • Make it something you’re likely to enjoy. Resolving to lose weight is perhaps the most popular New Year’s resolution every year. Though there’s no way to measure how many people make this resolution and stick with it, it’s safe to assume many people fall short of their weight-loss goal. That’s because the steps people must take to lose weight are not always easy to embrace. Many people join a gym in January so they can fully commit to their resolutions to lose weight. But joining a gym isn’t always the answer, as it’s easy to become intimidated at a gym where the majority of your fellow members are already in great shape. But this doesn’t mean you should shy away from your resolution. Instead, look for ways to make your resolution enjoyable so you’re more likely to stick with it. If you have resolved to lose weight but a gym isn’t for you, sign up for a dance class or join a cycling group. There’s more than one way to commit to a given resolution, and finding the most enjoyable way to tackle your resolution is often the easiest way to make it a success. • Make it a realistic goal. Your resolution should be realistic. If not, the chanc-

es of being successful are slim. For example, resolving to move overseas by the end of the coming calendar year may be a great goal, but if you have no job prospects overseas or too many commitments at home, then this goal is not very realistic and you probably won’t make it a successful resolution. However, this doesn’t mean you have to abandon your dream of moving overseas. Instead, resolve to make changes that make your desire to live overseas more realistic. Learn the language of a favorite country or learn about that country’s job market and work toward making yourself more attractive to potential overseas employers. This is a more realistic goal than deciding to move overseas in the very near future, and it sets you up for future success should you resolve to move abroad down the road. • Employ the buddy system. Resolutions don’t have to be a one-man show. In fact, your resolution may prove easier to keep if you can find someone to go along for the ride with you. For instance, if you have resolved to quit smoking, find a friend who also smokes and commit to your resolution together. You can lean on each other when times get tough and serve as each other’s watchdog to make sure neither one of you is straying from your goal. If you resolve to learn a foreign language in the year

ahead, find a friend to enroll in a class with you. As additional motivation, commit to visiting a foreign country where this language is spoken at the end of the year if both of you have successfully fulfilled your resolutions. • Develop a plan before making any commitments. Before you commit to a resolution, develop a plan as to how you’re going to make that resolution a success and determine if this plan is realistic. For example, if you resolve to lose weight, part of your plan should include an exercise regimen and any dietary changes. Once you have laid out this plan, examine it to see how likely you are to stick with it. If your plan includes waking up at 6 a.m. every morning to workout and you know waking up that early is problematic for you, then you don’t have to abandon the resolution, but you might want to develop a new plan that’s more likely to be successful. The plan should be in place before you make your resolution. If you simply cannot map out a plan that’s amenable to your schedule, then this resolution might prove very difficult to keep and you might want to explore another option. Many people find their New Year’s resolutions have fallen by the wayside come the end of January. But those serious about making a change can take steps to ensure their resolutions are a success.

AUGUST

Strankman joins PM to celebrate grain farmers’ open market Visiting Communities in Bloom judges gave Stettler a green thumbs-up for the town’s inaugural entry in the international competition. The judges said the community takes pride and strives “to help make Stettler a more beautiful place.” New Drumheller-Stettler MLA Rick Strankman was in the forefront when Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Bill C18, the Marketing Freedom for Grain Farmers Act, would take effect Aug. 1. Strankman, after all, was among the 13 farmers charged in 2002 for selling grain to the U.S. Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions depot in Stettler was in the spotlight as crews filmed a TV commercial for Travel Alberta that’s scheduled to be aired next spring in western Canada and in Europe. Active in rodeos in the Stettler area for almost 70 years, Vic and Joyce Stuckey and family rode high as the honourary parade marshals for the fourth annual Stettler Steel Wheel Stampede. The Stuckeys have strong ties to rodeo history, dating back to 1931, with Vic personally involved since 1948. A former Big Valley mayor, Richard Kargaard, 69, was fined $345 for assault, after he prevented former chief administrative officer Douglas Sommerville from leaving the village office, court was told. During a special council meeting, Sommerville had questioned the mayor about “improper funding approval.” Just months after becoming the new MLA for Drumheller-Stettler, Rick Strankman of the Opposition Wildrose party opened a satellite office in Stettler. It’s the same office previously occupied by former Progressive Conservative MLA and cabinet minister Jack Hayden. Gary Wilyman operates the Wildrose office in Stettler, under constituency assistant Patrick Turnbull. Longtime downtown Stettler business Lou’s Fashions closed its doors after 57 years, along with affiliates Odds & Ends clearance store and K.J. Casuals. St. George’s Anglican Church in Stettler welcomed Rev. Dr. Carolyn Langford as its new minister. Ordained in 1993 in Ottawa, she succeed Rev. Jack Schulze, who retired in spring after 20 years of ministry. The Gendre family from Erskine participated in a extended family reunion in France. It was dubbed “the world’s largest family reunion,” with 4,750 cousins of the Porteau-Clautour family, and gained status in Guinness World Records. The family members from Erskine in attendance were Joe and Circun Gendre, daughter Isabella, and David, Amanda and Mary O’Donnell.

New principals in command at multiple Stettler schools Veronica Pinkoski has taken over as the new principal at Christ-King Catholic School in Stettler. She continues her job as principal of Mother Teresa Catholic School in Halkirk. Both schools are part of the East Central Catholic Separate Schools Regional Division. Denise Campbell was appointed the new principal of Stettler Elementary School, a part of the Clearview School Division. Tim Croker of Stettler was named the principal of all eight Hutterite Colony schools in the division. Allan Johnston of Big Valley received a prestigious Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award for his volunteer contributions in leading the preservation of the heritage of the Big Valley community. Johnston received the award from Alberta Lt.-Gov. Donald Ethell on behalf of Gov. Gen. David Johnston. Cameron Russell had an eye on Stettler even before he became the new Stettler RCMP corporal this summer. Russell succeeded Terry Best, who retired the winter before after about 20 years with the Stettler RCMP detachment.

Stettler Middle School students reported to class in early September. Stettler is among 64 communities in Alberta awarded $5,000 each to host free events for the fifth annual Alberta Culture Days in late September. The local organizers are the Stettler Regional Board of Trade and Community Development. Reputable Pheasantback Golf and Country Club, north of Stettler, was shut down after financial difficulty drove it into receivership. Opened in 1995, the facility was ranked among the top-10 courses in Alberta and top-100 in Canada. Former Alberta premier Peter Lougheed died at 84, just months after one survey ranked him as the best

Canadian premier all-time. He served as premier from 1971 to 1985. The Halkirk wind project, with 83 turbines going up between Halkirk and Castor, was celebrated as more than 1,200 people signed a blade at the Halkirk rodeo grounds. Capital Power Corporation says that when the project is completed, it will become Alberta’s biggest wind farm. Landon Catt, 35, of Stettler has battled back from a dirt-biking crash in July 2011 that left him a quadriplegic. Catt has earned the Glen Rose Award of Courage for demonstrating “extraordinary courage during the rehabilitation process.”

Low attendance at most events marked the inaugural Stettler edition of Alberta Culture Days in late September. Stettler Regional Board of Trade and a community committee organized more than 25 events staged throughout the community during the weekend. Changes are already planned for next year. Romar Power Sports of Stettler lost more than $20,000 after three recreational motorcycles, an all-terrain vehicle and a snowmobile were stolen in two separate break-ins at the shop.

draft design plans for the project, which is estimated at more than $1.5 million. Small schools in Donalda, Byemoor and Brownfield were told they face the potential to close or be downsized as Clearview School Division trustee Peter Simons introduced a motion to study the future financial feasibility of the schools.

Stettler and District Family and Community Support Services welcomed Wendy Rhyason of Donalda as the new executive-director. Rhyason brings to the job a wealth of experience in social services, counselling and administration.

Town of Stettler Coun. Leona Thorogood was doubly honoured. She was named the female citizen of the year by the Stettler Regional Board of Trade, while she also received a Hal Rogers Fellow award presented by Kin Canada Foundation for Kinettes. Rob Spencer was chosen as Stettler’s male citizen of the year for his leadership as chairman of Heartland Beautification Committee and Communities in Bloom.

NOVEMBER

Three small schools saved by the bell Lane Turigan, 18, of Stettler died at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary from injuries sustained in an Oct. 13 highway crash about 20 kilometres from Stettler. Turigan was the driver of the truck that left Highway 11 at the sharp turn just before the Highway 12 intersection in foggy conditions during the wee hours of that Saturday morning. Friends and family members remembered Turigan as a carefree and fun-loving sort who lived life to the fullest. Stettler Independent district columnist Jacqui Goddard, a Rumsey correspondent for the past 50 years, died at age 75. For half a century, Goddard penned the Rumsey and district news for the Independent and the Drumheller Mail. The Stettler region was in

shock after the sudden death of Halkirk-area farmer Steve McKnight, who died in a Nov. 16 farm accident. McKnight, 59, made an impact in farming and teaching, and had a passion for sports, his friends and colleagues said. Donalda residents feared their community was in jeopardy if Clearview School Division goes ahead with proposed plans to consider closing Donalda School, along with small schools in Byemoor and Brownfield. Donalda Mayor Bruce Gartside told the school board that Donalda wouldn’t be much of a community without a school. The County of Stettler hired Rick Green as its first director of engineering “to provide the county with expertise and save funding in outside engineering costs and contracts.”

Bob Byers of Stettler and Rev. David Lilly of Big Valley each received a special Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal from federal Crowfoot MP Kevin Sorenson. Heartland Youth Centre executive-director Winnie Bissett earlier received a medal. Lilly has been a longtime Metis minister, while Byers has served in conservation roles for many years. The boardroom was packed for the Clearview School Division board meeting, at which trustees voted 6-1 against a motion to consider closing Donalda, Byemoor and Brownfield schools. The trustees also decided to gather more information to try to effectively evaluate the sustainability of all schools in the district. The Town of Stettler council welcomed news that more police

officers would be added locally in the next five years. Two more officers are pegged for the County of Stettler. Residents from the Stettler, Castor, Forestburg and Bashaw communities showed Christmasgiving spirit in collecting a record 1,247 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. The boxes are bound for impoverished children in Central America. The 2012 count broke the previous year’s mark of 901, after the Stettler Alliance Church depot inadvertently received a double order of 1,200 boxes this fall. Faye Blakely was honoured provincially after retiring from her 27-year job with Stettler and District Family and Community Support Services, most recently as administrator. She received an award of merit from FCSS Alberta Foundation in Edmonton.

Upgrades to Stettler Recreation Centre, including a new seniors’ centre and a new skatepark nearby, highlight a $4.9-million capital budget for 2013 for the Town of Stettler. A new seniors’ social centre upstairs in the SRC conference room has been pegged at $300,000, while upgrades to the SRC have been budgeted for $250,000, and projected to be totally funded by utility surplus. Stettler-and-area residents filled 120 Christmas hampers for people facing tough economic times. Monetary donations, however, were down by about $5,000. About 75 hampers supported families with an average of five people, while the balance were delivered to couples and singles.
