Dozens of hardy souls— including Jim Rutherford, in the white top hat—ushered in 2013 with a brisk dunk in the Somass River at Clutesi Haven Marina on Jan. 1. The polar bear swim is a timehonoured tradition in Port Alberni, but unofficial for the past few years.

complete,” mother Kelli said. Olivia was born three days earlier than her expected date of Jan. 4 but this is in keeping with a family tradition, Kelli said. “All of our kids were born early. Our boys were born 11 days early,” Kelli said. “Olivia was late in our minds, but we were ready.” Kelli felt baby coming on Dec. 31 and was admitted to West Coast General Hospital right away. “We weren’t expecting to have a New Year’s baby but it was a nice surprise,” Kelli said. “We thought she was going to be born before Christmas.” Mother and daughter are scheduled to be released from WCGH on Thursday. “We have her room ready and everything planned,” Kelli said. “We’ve waited a long time for her.”

A Supreme Court justice has returned a passport to a man facing sex charges so he can travel to a country with no extradition treaty during the Christmas holidays. Justice B. McKenzie granted the application to Graham Maxmenko in Nanaimo Supreme Court on, Dec. 10, provincial prosecutor Christina Proteau said. Maxmenko will be out of country from Dec. 18, 2012 to Jan. 18, 2013, travelling to the Dominican Republic. Justice McKenzie ordered him to surrender his passport as soon as he returns to Canada. McKenzie also ordered Maxmenko to pay a $15,000 surety as part of the arrangement, Proteau said. Maxmenko was charged in March 2012 with one count each of sexual assault and sexual interference, both charges involving a minor in Port Alberni. The Crown viewed Maxmenko as a flight risk because he lived on his yacht in the Lower Mainland and was a frequent traveller. He was released from custody and was ordered to surrender his passport, remain in Canada and pay a $10,000 surety. His trial is set to start in February 2013, Proteau said. The Crown argued that Canada has no extradition treaty with the Dominican Republic, therefore Maxmenko shouldn’t be allowed to leave. The Crown won the same argument in Port Alberni Provincial Court last March, Proteau said. Maxmenko’s lawyer Peter Wilson countered that Maxmenko had abided by all of his bail conditions.

hile fireworks and Auld Lang Syne rang in most families New Year’s, a baby girl arrived to enrich the life of one young Port Alberni family. Olivia Suzanne Maria Rous is Port Alberni’s first baby of the year. The six-pound-eight ounce 50 centimetre long girl was born at West Coast General Hospital on Jan. 1 at 7:27 p.m. “There’s almost no words to describe how we felt when she was born. If I could use one word to describe Olivia arriving it would be ‘blessed,” father Tony said. “She’s a very quiet, contented, peaceful girl,” Tony said. “Kelli and I are kind of like that — but we have our moments.” Little girls soon grow up, Kelli’s mother said from across the hospital room.”If she’s anything like her mom then she’s going to be a handful,” she said. Olivia joins her five siblings: four brothers and one sister, who range from age three to 22. “Olivia makes our family

Idle No More events gaining strength WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

Idle No More events in small towns like Port Alberni are linked by social media and together have as much impact as events in larger communities, Alberni Valley event supporter Barry Bruyere said. More than 125 people showed up yet another Idle No More flash mob event, this one held at the whaling shrine at Victoria Quay on Dec. 31. The event has grown since the two dozen or so people who gathered at an event at Harbour Quay last week. Another event is planned for Jan. 3 at North Island College at 2 p.m. The events are being held to mark

solidarity with Attawapiskat First Nation Chief Theresa Spence who has been on a hunger strike for more than three weeks, and to oppose Bill C-45—the Harper government’s recently passed omnibus budget legislation. There was a cultural display of song and dance to mark the occasion at Victoria Quay. But in a speech to the crowd, former Hupacasath chief councillor and now University of Victoria law professor Judith Sayers bluntly described the impact of Bill C-45. “This is about improving economic development and improving the economy at the expense of our lands and treaties,”Sayers said. The bill undermines the protection of

water, Sayers said. It also makes it easier for First Nations to surrender their lands. “We want safe drinking water as well but they are forcing us to have to go to cities and regional districts and not give us the money and resources

to be able to do it ourselves,” Sayers said. The definition of an aboriginal fishery has also been changed, which will have a detrimental effect on fisheries, she added. The bill also requires that First

Nations financial matters be made more transparent by having tribal officials disclose their finances online for the public to scrutinize. “I believe that chiefs and councils should give you guys regular financial statements,” Sayers said. “If your tribe has a mortgage with a bank at six per cent interest then what business is this of anyone’s?” The thing that sticks in peoples craws is the Conservative government’s haughtiness about consultation, Sayers said. “They think they don’t have to ask or consult about anything and that’s what this is all about.” Those words struck a deadening chord with Alberni resident Richard Pesik, who was in attendance at the event.

Pesik grew up in Czechoslovakia under Communist rule when the government had the population in its iron grip, he said. “When a government has absolute power then its dictatorial and they don’t have to consult,” Pesik said. “There was an uprising in Czechoslovakia and that led to change. I hope to see Idle No More lead to change too.” The event in Alberni was held in conjunction with others on the Island, including one in Chemainus where traffic was stopped on a highway. Other events were held across larger urban centres across the country as well. Port Alberni’s event might be small in comparison but you have to look at it in context, supporter Barry Bruyere said. “Port Alberni might be a small place but all these events in small places are linked immediately with the larger events through social media and the Internet,” Bruyere said. In another development, the original founders of the Idle No More movement distanced themselves from direct action movements in a notice on their website.“The Chiefs have called for action and anyone who chooses can join with them, however this is not part of the Idle No More movement as the vision of this grassroots movement does not coincide with the visions of the Leadership,” the statement noted. “While we appreciate the individual support we have received from chiefs and councillors, we have been given a clear mandate to work outside of the systems of government and that is what we will continue to do.” Pesik said he hopes the movement doesn’t fracture the same way the Occupy movement did earlier this year. “It became about many different things and it died. I hope that doesn’t happen with this,” he said.

2012 in review: wasn’t that a party for homecoming June: The Valley’s boating industry fared the recession well as it headed into another season. The used boat market was brisk at the Port Boat House. Alberni Industrial Marine was set to expand. Fibre Pro Boats owner Mike Bouchard just built a boat for fishing show host Mark Pendlington. More than 50 people protested outside the constituency office of NanaimoAlberni Conservative MP James Lunney. The group was protesting the federal Conservative’s Omnibus Budget. Known as Bill C-38. City and IHS officials were scrambling for a plan to deal with the $70,000 budget shortfall the IHS found itself in after council approved their budget. Organizers were cranking up for another Relay For Life event. Compliance Coal CEO John Tapics was met by a phalanx of protesters as he addressed the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce. It was the end of an era as a wrecking ball brought down the main building at Clutesi Haven Marina. And still on the water front, PAPA announced that its new chief executive officer was Zoran Knezevic from Surrey. Knezevic replaced Brad Madelung, who retired. Once classes were finished for the year, teachers and school district employees began packing up 60 years’ worth of equipment and memories in preparation for moving into the new facility. warning people not to go tubing from the top of the park. At the end of the month, a woman driving up to the RCMP station with what she thought was a live grenade caused some excitement. The bomb squad was called in from Vancouver and the grenade was later found to be a fake. August The first weekend in August was all about homecoming, as thousands of people helped celebrate Port Alberni’s centennial with a four-day party. Talk isn’t cheap if life is at stake It is difficult to condone a person starving herself to death to make a point, such as Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence has been doing since she stopped eating solid food Dec. 11 in protest of the recently passed, 443-page omnibus federal budget bill. However, we admire the strength the Idle No More movement has gained since the first peaceful protests in support of Spence and her desire to improve relations between the federal government and Aboriginal Peoples in Canada. This movement reveals a growing dissatisfaction among First Nations— and their non-First Nations supporters—for the way the federal government is ignoring their right to consultation and eroding a nation-to-nation relationship. All Spence is asking for is a conversation with the prime minister. At the very least, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development John Duncan could speak with her. He has said he is open to discussion but not a photo op—an ironic statement from a politician, for sure. At the same time, protesters should realize that while a conversation may eventually come, change would take time. Are they prepared? Do they have a plan for moving forward if Harper meets with Spence? What happens if he doesn’t, and she dies? The ‘occupy’ movement of 2011 started strong, gained strength then petered out when it lost focus, and climbers-on took over with their agendas. We would hate to see the Idle No More movement morph into another ‘occupy’. A woman willing to starve herself to make her point is worth more than that. At the end of the day, it should not have taken someone going on a hunger strike to bring national attention to such discord. Let’s hope it does not take a woman’s death for the government to get the point.

Gas may be ‘enviro-villain’ for 2013 TOM FLETCHER B.C. Views

ICTORIA – They’re well on the way to stopping the expansion of oil exports to Asia. Now will B.C.’s American branch-plant environmental machine turn on natural gas? A couple of weeks ago I described the dispute between the Haisla Nation and the rest of the Coastal First Nations group over the pioneering of liquefied natural gas development on Haisla territory at Kitimat. Powerful chiefs of the Heiltsuk, Gitga’at, Haida and others in the so-called Great Bear Rainforest oppose the idea of kicking off a new LNG export industry without extending the hydro grid to support renewable power for the region. LNG is shaping up as B.C.’s largest-ever industrial project, if it gets built. And there are signs the American-

directed environmental attack is swinging to our gas boom. Some in the Canadian media insist no such U.S. influence exists, or that it is trivial and benign. They mock federal Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver’s description of “foreign radicals,” pretending this applies to everyone opposed to oil pipelines. There weren’t many reporters with me when I covered the negotiations for the Great Bear Rainforest in 2006. To the Vancouver media it was just a big forest deal up in the middle of nowhere. Along with B.C. cabinet minister Pat Bell, Coastal First Nations and forest companies, the Sierra Club, ForestEthics and Greenpeace muscled their way to the table. How they did so became clear in early 2007. Behind these big three eco-

propaganda groups was a $60 million war chest from an obscure outfit called Tides Canada. Another front group, as it turns out. The actual source of the money was the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the David and Lucille Packard Foundation, the Wilberforce Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. Most made their billions in computers and software in San Francisco or Seattle. They’ve funded scientifically suspect campaigns such as “Yellowstone to Yukon” and “boreal forest” aimed at turning more than a third of Canada into parks. Increasingly, they are partnering with aboriginal people in B.C. and across Canada. Some in B.C.’s major

media have since grudgingly credited independent B.C. researcher Vivian Krause with filling in the blanks. She has shown that starting in 2002, these foundations began formally organizing against Canadian fossil fuel production. When the B.C. and Canadian governments matched the $60 million Great Bear Rainforest fund for “ecosystem-based” forest management, they didn’t realize they were reinforcing a blockade against oil exports. Tides and its backers have continued to fund and create new protest groups, which are quoted as they pop up by credulous B.C. media. Their argument against oil exports centres on the sexy but false premise that Alberta’s “tar sands” somehow uniquely threaten the global climate. Lately, as the size of B.C.’s gas development has become clearer, the protests have started to refocus. Continued / 9

From / 8 Now we hear dire claims about the decades-old technique of “fracking” in gas development, and previously obscure groups are springing up to protest gas projects. Hollywood is about to gas us with an anti-fracking movie starring Matt Damon. Previews suggest that Promised Land works the usual evil-greedycapitalist themes, in the Avatar tradition. ForestEthics, Sierra Club and Greenpeace, meanwhile, are campaigning against their original forest preservation deal on B.C.’s Central and North

Coast. Sustainable development solutions aren’t good for their business model. If people think a problem is solved, they stop sending money. Meanwhile, the U.S. is surging ahead with its own shale oil and gas boom. Plans are underway for LNG exports from the U.S. to Asia. I think 2013 would be a good year for Canada to start making its own decisions on energy development. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com

To the Editor, It is reassuring to observe that Canada is “back on track” as it relates to foreign policy commitments regarding Israel and Palestine. Many observers have been puzzled by the recent stance of our government. Having said that, it’s most important now that Canada reach out to ordinary Palestinians who struggle to survive each and every day. I have just returned from Palestine (and Israel) and was struck by the urgent needs in the health and education sector. These services make a huge difference in the quality of life for the majority of Palestinians trying to make a living and be good neighbours. Canada has been well known internationally as a generous provider of aid that benefits the most needy. This opportunity presents itself now in Palestine at a critical moment. Support of this nature can only make for a healthier and more stable, positive partner who is able to negotiate a peaceful solution in an

increasingly fractured relationship. Robert Granke, executive director, Canadian Lutheran World Relief

Plan starts with merchants To the Editor, Re: What’s the plan for South Port?, Letters, Dec. 27. The plan starts with the merchants and not city hall. The city really has a limited role in the goings on in uptown. They keep the streets clean, the flowers watered and enforce any applicable bylaws to make things run as smoothly as possible. I believe the real responsibility lies with the merchants and shareholders themselves to act and react to the needs of uptown and their customers. They should ask when applicable for assistance from the city in regards to signage and assistance on access to monies for improvements. The businesses the letter writer, Mr. Ashby, cited—Zellers, The Brick, Home Hardware, coffee houses, etc.—were either failed business models or needed to expand into larger

facilities—none of which the city had any say in. Zellers failed nationally, not just here. I personally see a bright future for uptown and I have received very good input from Mayor John Douglas, who kindly supports me by buying a cup of coffee, encouraging me and taking the time to listen to my ideas. I have been invited to numerous meetings with every department of city hall and have been asked what I think could help. I feel the city has a real desire to help in anyway they can. As the letter writer pointed out, the private sector has a business plan, but the city is a public sector and is in the business of running the city, not coddling retailers. The merchants of South Port have to step up and take control of their own destiny. We are all working together on a plan—public and private—to make this city even better than it already is. Please feel free to join us. Kevin Wright, Port Alberni (Editor’s note: Kevin Wright owns SteamPunk Café and

Coffee House and is vice-president of the Uptown Merchants Association.)

Christy Clark should resign To the Editor, Re: Dec. 19 interview on 98.9 JET FM between radio host Drex and Premier Christy Clark. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read what our illustrious tax dollar paid for and our so called leader said. The caller should have been put in his place by the talk show host but wasn’t. The talk show host should be fired and the station fined for allowing that kind of venomous hatred to be aired. Ms. Clark by making light of it was not responding, as some have suggested, to being caught between a rock and a hard place, but rather showed in no uncertain terms that she is not fit to represent the female half of her electorate. Having someone say MILF is insulting, not flattering. And dangerous. Ask the woman in Denver who was fired for being too sexy, or the woman in LA who was set on fire, or the woman in India who

was gang raped and died. It is the propagation of the good old double standard where middle-aged men with their younger female “pets” vs. the offensive behaviour of female “cougars”. Does anybody ever stand up and say where do you get this stuff ? Everybody should give their heads a shake. How can Ms. Clark not see that the increasing degradation, lack of respect, objectifying, and violence towards women is not a matter of flattery. It is not a joke. It is not even about sex. It is about power and control. I say to Ms. Clark she should apologize to all of us women, the wives, mothers, sisters, girlfriends, grandmothers, and daughters who can not safely coexist on the planet we call home, alongside and equal to our male counterparts. She should have shown intelligence and sensitivity by refusing to answer a question that was beyond crude, not try to milk it and add fuel to an already out of control social problem. Ruth John, Port Alberni

ANTICIPATION!! We have just crossed the boundaries into another new year. Christmas decorations are put away, and only a few houses have festive lights shining. For some it is a time for New Year’s resolutions; for others, the hope is that things are no worse than last year! Our church has a poster, with the image of a journey, and the caption: “Appreciate the Past; Anticipate the Future”. Over two thousand years ago, magi followed a star. They were full of anticipation, but not sure what they would find at the end of their journey. Because they set out on a journey with the goal of following the star, they found a small child, Jesus, and offered their gifts. Godly Anticipation can produce heavenly results!

HEALTHY LIVING e v i t c A

Health tip: Move more, eat less, think in moderation and 2013 could be a healthy, sustainable year for you.

It’s a new year: get healthy by throwing diet out SANDRA GENTLEMAN

Healthy Living

As the holidays have come to a close, New Year’s resolutions have been made and routines re-established, it’s a perfect time to put health as a personal priority. Many people assume that over Christmas, a weight gain of 10 pounds or more is expected— similar to going on a vacation. The solution, individuals often think, is going on a diet starting in the New Year (or after returning from holidays). Whereas, healthy living includes enjoying most things (eating and activity) in moderation and not dieting. When someone states, “ I was on a cruise, so, I indulged and ended up gaining 10 pounds,” a good question to ask is , “did you take your body with you when you went on holidays?” A healthy lifestyle means enjoying your food intake and exercise as important elements all the time; incorporating these things into daily living during regular and special times. “Dieting” separates eating from living your life to the fullest. The body and mind connection is important for having a lifelong positive relationship with food and good health. Diets are generally not a good idea. Typically, they are short-lived and restrict foods, so weight loss happens, but is not a lifelong sustainable solution to maintaining good health. Any diet plan that unnecessarily limits food groups and/ or puts a strong emphasis on one or two particular foods may not be healthy for the long term. Unless

there is a physical allergy/intolerance or medical reason, there’s no need to completely avoid certain foods. All foods fit in moderation, as tolerated. Diets may be disguised as anything from ‘Eating for your Blood-Type’, ‘Atkins’, Wheat Belly’, ‘Paleolithic Diet’, “South Beach’, ‘Juicing Method’, ‘ or other restrictive plans that are camouflaged as a healthy way of life. Many of these fad diet plans offer some promise of losing weight, along with feeling healthier overall, and use scientific jargon to sound convincing.

‘...healthy living includes enjoying most things (eating and activity) in moderation and not dieting.’

The problem comes when the diet plan restricts regular foods, so you start feeling deprived. There’s a strong possibility that these food avoidances may lead to problems with getting adequate nutrition over time. In addition, a particular diet or way of life may appear to

be healthy and you could lose weight, but the true test is being able to continue eating that way for years and maintain the healthy weight loss for the long-term without sacrificing certain nutrients. If weight is lost with a restrictive eating plan, once you get bored of the diet (which may lack variety and balance), you may want to ‘treat’ yourself, with the diet’s ‘forbidden’ foods, and inevitably, the weight may return with a vengeance. This yo-yo diet effect is harder on the body, organs and mind with the relationship you have with daily food intake. With your healthful New Year’s

resolutions, throw out the old diet plans and start practicing moderation with variety and balance in your food intake. Common sense tips that you may know but sometimes forget include eating fewer calories (smaller portions, less servings, more mindful eating), not depriving yourself of favourite foods, but just eating less of them. Also, exercise is key. Try to include regular daily activity as much as you can. Sandra Gentleman is a registered dietitian who is passionate about health and wellness. She is co-owner of Canal Beach.

Principles For Living by Dr. Carl Weber, BPE (Hon), DC YOUR HEALTH MATTERS! Hello and welcome to the newest regular column in the Alberni Valley News. My name is Carl Weber and our family has moved to Port Alberni for the friendliness and the incredible outdoor possibilities. Ocean, mountains, lakes and rivers abound and big enough to support a pool, Jr. A hockey team, College and plenty of shopping. I knew I was home when I came across Gone Fishin’, open at 8 a.m. on a Sunday morning! Perfect. After 15 years of Chiropractic in Ontario and 5 years in the dry BC interior, I know I’m ready for the island lifestyle. We’ve named the clinic Honu after the famous Pacific green sea turtle. It represents humility, longevity and peace. Honu is also the symbol of a well navigated journey. What a perfect metaphor for a “whole new” path to health. It is my privilege to bring you ‘Principles For Living‘, a column dedicated to helping you have the most healthful, balanced and energetic life possible. In the coming months, I will be exploring important and practical matters of health with you. Please never underestimate the degree to which you can affect your health, your quality of life and the rate at which you age. By making better, yet seemingly small day to day decisions on how to live your life, you begin to celebrate health instead of just avoiding disease. And Port Alberni has the perfect balance of weather to produce great health! We have the winter months to establish good health habits. Get adjusted, massaged, tweak your nutrition, learn to listen to your body, read great life affirming literature, and work on your strength and flexibility. Build up those reserves of vitality. When the sun reappears, just keep active outdoors doing the things you love with the people you love. Natural vibrant health will be a nice by-product of that flow. This column is about you and your health. Your wellbeing truly matters. Peace, Carl

Wrestlers shine at War on Floor Kuxhaus heads

Alberni wrestlers performed to expectations at the annual War on the Floor wrestling tournament at the Langley Events Center. The local program took a strong group over for the grade 9/10 and 11/12 novice events on the first day and the Elite category on the second day and they didn’t disappoint. Alberni wrestlers captured four gold, seven silver and four bronze medals and had another nine wrestlers place in the top six at this very prestigious mainland event. “We entered a number of our upcoming wrestlers in the Novice Events on Thursday,” stated ADSS Head Coach John McDonald. “The tournament is a restricted tournament in that it is only for those wrestlers who have not had provincial or national results

yet. We moved some of our intermediate wrestlers up to the older age division for a little more challenge.” On the first day, Dean Leyland (70 kg), Julia McGowan (70kg), and Michel Kurucz (60kg) all went undefeated to claim the gold medals in their respective division in the Grade 9/10 Novice Tournament.

Christian Anderson (90kg) did the same in the Grade 11/12 Novice Tournament. Winning silver medals were Eryk McKenzie (66kg Gr. 9/10), Johannes Kulich (70kg Gr. 9/10), Sheldon Haddad (63kg Gr. 11/12), Remi Wells (57kg Gr. 11/12), and Elise Huffman (70kg Gr. 11/12). “The Elite Tournament on Friday is always a

highly competitive tournament. This year it was arguably even stronger as it featured some wrestlers from Washington, California, and Alberta in addition to the best wrestlers in BC,” assistant coach Russ Bodnar said. “The Canada Games are this summer, so B.C. and the other provinces are really focused to make sure

Both teams come into play this weekend with similar records. The Bulldogs currently sit 2nd in the Island Division with 40 points and a record of 17-12-1-5, 6 points behind the Victoria Grizzlies. The Spurce Kings have a record of 17-10-1-5, also with 40 points, and 4 points behind Chilliwack who sit atop the Mainland Division. Prince George’s last two wins came on the road with a 4-3 win in Cowichan and a 2-0 win in Surrey. This will be Prince George’s second game of a 3-games-in-3-days island swing whereas this is the Bulldogs’ only game of the weekend. Bulldogs players that have been hot as of late include Matt Hansen who has 11 points in his last 8 games and Manny Gialedakis that who has 8 points in his last 8 games, including points in each of his last 4 games. The Spruce Kings took the first meeting of the season 6-3 in Prince George back in October. GAME SPONSOR: Alberni Valley Golf Club & Pro Shop

Several years ago Riley Kuxhaus traded in his soccer cleats for a lacrosse stick. Now, the Grade 11 student is hoping the switch will translate into a university scholarship. Kuxhaus has spent the past season playing with the Vancouver Island Seaspray, a high school-aged rep team based out of Victoria. He practices twice a week and competes on Saturdays with a club team in Nanaimo, and travels to Victoria every second Saturday to practice at UVic. This week Seaspray teammates and their families headed to San Diego, where they will participate in an 80-team tourney that

Nolan Badovinac (76kg) and Jesse Wagner (54kg) finished second in their respective weight classes. “Both Nolan and Jesse wrestled well all tournament,” coach McDonald said. “They were undefeated heading into the finals. For the most part I am happy with how they wrestled. Jonothan Spencer (3rd at 76kg) and Jordan Wagner (3rd at 54kg) won Bronze Medals in the Elite. Remi Wells (fourth 60kg), Christian Anderson (4th 100kg), Julia McGowan (sixth at 70kg), and Elise Huffman (sixth at 80kg) rounded out the placings for ADSS in the Elite Tournament.
