Two strong efforts on the road have shown the Creston Valley Thunder Cats how good they can be when they play full 60-minute games, coach Josh Hepditch said on Sunday. After 6-1 drubbing of the Fernie Ghostriders on Friday night the Thunder Cats absorbed a narrow 2-1 loss in Golden against the Eddie Mountain Division-leading Golden Rockets on Saturday. “We played extremely well in both games,” Hepditch said. “I don’t think (Friday’s game) was a fluke. That’s what we can do if we really want to do it. “We stuck to the game plan for 60 minutes and it wasn’t a complicated one.” The Cats dominated Fernie from start to finish on Friday in a game marred only by a Matt Carr goal with 26 seconds remaining, ruining goaltender Tyler Moffat’s shot at a rare KIJHL shutout. he Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program is holding its third annual Art Trot on Feb. 8 and 9 in the Sunshine Room at the Creston and District Community Complex. Funds raised by the quality art show go directly to the program. Regional artists have donated fabulous works of their own art, while others have donated unique pieces from their own homes as they “get lighter” and make room for new art. Tax receipts are issued to the donor for the actu-

RCMP seeks witness in Canyon Street hit and run BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff Creston RCMP are asking for the public’s help as they investigate a hit and run at Canyon Street and Pine Street early last Saturday morning. Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said two adult men were crossing Canyon Street when a dark coloured SUV fishtailed into the intersection after crossing the railway tracks. One of the men was unable to avoid the out-of-control vehicle and was hit and thrown into his companion. The former, who was visiting from Saskatchewan, suffered a broken leg and the latter, a Creston resident, sustained bruises. The vehicle sped away from the scene. Police ask anyone with information about the vehicle or its driver to contact the local detachment at 250-428-9313. Other than that incident, the RCMP had a relatively peaceful Christmas week, responding to 50 calls for service from December 24-30, Gollan said. December 24 •A vehicle landed in a tree when the driver swerved to avoid “a small animal” on Highway 3A and went off the road. The driver then fell out of the vehicle and rolled down into a ravine. He was taken to hospital to be checked out.
•The driver of a vehicle that passed on a double solid line on Highway 21 was issued a verbal warning when police located him. •A person breaching a no contact order was reported on Canyon Street. •Police were called to a residence on Rocky Point Road in Wynndel to assist with a family issue. •A vehicle reported driving erratically on Hillside Street could not be located by police. •Harassing phone calls to a Vance Road residence in Erickson were reported. •Minor damage resulted when a vehicle collided with a deer on Highway 3. •Creston police assisted Smithers RCMP in the investigation of complaint of uttering threats. •Police determined all was okay when they conducted a well-being check at a 16th Avenue North residence. December 25 •Merry Christmas! The only call to the RCMP was a false alarm at a Northwest Boulevard business. December 26 •An intoxicated male on 16th Street was arrested and held in cells until sober. •A 72-year-old male was found dead in his home on Mountain Springs Crescent. Natural causes were attributed. •Police found no entry had been gained
to a Canyon Street business when the front entrance was found unlocked. •A white diesel pickup in which people were suspected of consuming alcohol left Yahk Settlement Road before police arrived. December 27 •Under investigation is a fight between two males outside of a Canyon Street pub. One was hospitalized with injuries. •A complaint of phone threats was made from Hearst Avenue in Riondel. •A five-foot plastic snowman was reported stolen from a yard on Erickson Road on December 19th. •Minor damage resulted when a vehicle went off Highway 3/95. •Two bicycles were reported stolen from a Dogwood Street residence. •An investigation of a report of uttering threats from 10th Avenue North concluded the complaint was unfounded. •A well-being check at a Highway 3 residence revealed the resident was okay. •Tailgate parties are pretty much out of the question for a local resident after the tailgate of his 2013 GMC Sierra was stolen from a Canyon Street parking lot. December 28 •An Erickson resident turned in an old shotgun to be destroyed. •Police checked on the well-being of a child on Canyon-Lister Road at the request
Wikdahl eyes completion of her 11-year quest to circle the world BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance staff
Lori Wikdahl is down to the final few sleeps before reaching an ambitious goal she set out with 11 years ago. On Tuesday, she plans to complete her personal “walk around the world”, completing 40,000 kilometres on foot since she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2002. Friends and well-wishers are invited to congregate at PCSS between 12:30 and 1 p.m., then join Wikdahl as she walks to Creston & District Community Complex, taking the last of what she estimates to be 4.5 billion steps along her journey. And then, she said on Monday, the planning starts on her next personal challenge. “You have to do something,” she said. “That’s the key!” Wikdahl, a local artist best known for her painting on rocks, is a grandmother
determined not to let MS take over her life. In an artist’s profile in the Advance last year, Wikdahl said she was bedridden when first attacked by the disease. It was time for a re-evaluation of her ambition and materialism and she took the challenge to heart. “Life is not a pay cheque. Life is not a job. Life is living,” she said “I owe that knowledge to MS. And I have learned that you can take the disability out of the disease.” When Wikdahl recovered enough to get out of her bed, she set a goal to remain as active as humanly possible, and determined that she would walk the distance of the earth’s circumference—40,000 km—in 10 years. She kickstarted that commitment by setting out in 2003 to walk across Canada. Wikdahl made the trek—from Confederation Bridge in Prince Edward Island to English Bay in Vancouver—in 287 days, becoming the first woman in
Canada to accomplish the feat. Her 10-year goal didn’t account for health setbacks, but when the decade of walking closed, she didn’t give up on her goal. “I’ll do it this year, though,” she said last summer. A rough period in the autumn caused her to come up just short. She has persisted, though, becoming a familiar face on the streets of Creston as she walks, always with purpose, on the sidewalks, sometimes in the company of a grandchild, but usually alone, pausing only to wave and say hello to passers-by. “I AM REALLY REALLY HURTING TODAY...suck it up buttercup those 88 km aren't going to do themselves!” she wrote on her Facebook page on Monday. If pain and depression can be eased by accomplishment, Wikdahl should soon enjoy a happy and pain-free few hours as she looks back on her remarkable journey.

July 5 — A decision to charge for children who bus to a school out of their designated catchment area would cost School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) parents $200 a year, a message delivered at a meeting on June 28, which about 30 people attended to get clarification about the new policy. “I need to be perfectly honest with you — it’s a revenue generator,” Supt. Jeff Jones told parents. •Canada Day was an extra special day for five Creston Valley residents who were surprise recipients of Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals. Selected for their contributions were Chris Luke, Muriel Buhr, Henry Schoof, Harry Haberstock and Lew Truscott. •The colourful new playground that was put into use in Centennial Park in 2011 was officially opened on Canada Day. Kootenay River flooding resulted in West Creston’s Peterman Road being closed completely because parts of the road are covered to a depth of 12 inches. An evacuation alert for 35 homes and a state of local emergency were declared on June 27 in West Creston. 12 — With water levels no longer threatening homes, an evacuation alert for Peterman Road in West Creston was lifted on July 6. •The Town of Creston embarked on a review of development cost charges (DCCs), a system that pre-determines the costs of building and upgrading water, sewer and roads to accommodate new development. While developers foot the full costs of infrastructure on a site, expansions or upgrades to systems away from the development are often required, at

•College of the Rockies Community Greenhouse staff were dismayed on July 4 to find that several vegetable beds on the Creston campus had been vandalized overnight. Carrots, potatoes, beets, cabbage, leeks, peppers and onions had been ripped from the ground. Most were dumped on the ground, while some onions and beets — the latter minus their tops — were taken. The biggest concern was the setback to the greenhouse’s recipients, mainly the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors and the Creston Valley Gleaners Society food bank, as well as other non-profit groups. 19 — A 22-year-old female was recovering from injuries sustained when she was driven over by a
pickup truck in her yard in Wynndel on July 9. She suffered a broken hip, and collarbone and back injuries, and was flown to Cranbrook for treatment by helicopter ambulance. The driver, a construction contractor working at the residence, was leaving the yard when his vehicle went over the woman, who was sunbathing at the time. •The Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program (TRP) was $25,000 richer, after Creston beat Kimberley in the Kraft Celebration Tour challenge on July 10. The 171,142-143,390 win was announced on TSN’s SportsCentre, which would broadcast its Aug. 17 episode live from Creston. Continued on page 9

To the Editor: (Re: “Regional directors are overpaid”, Dec. 20 Advance, page 7) Chuck Truscott is just a bundle of information, isn’t he? His letter was a cheap shot when there are other methods to pursue such matters before going public. For sure, there is a budget breakdown of individual entries to support such round numbers that Chuck is presenting. We must remember that the regional district program was presented to the province of B.C by the Vander Zalm administration, region by region, to give each region the opportunity to manage itself to its own liking. Such was the case for some years, but as time progressed more recent governments commenced pushing initiatives onto the regional districts that the government should be administrating on its own. One such case, in my estimation, is the province of B.C.’s carbon initative and CO2 and carbon tax credits and debits. This initative is loaded with consultant costs and public meetings. The Regional District of East Kootenay just had to foot a bill for $18,000 to buy carbon tax credits because it didn’t meet its carbon footprint goal. My experience with communications and response of the Regional District of Central Kootenay directors has been more than excellent. That sort of service comes from sound administration at the top, which at the present time is none other than John Kettle. Kettle, I see, has been reelected as board chair for another term with no opposition. That says something. It seems to me a good regional director at $60,000 per annum is cheap compared to MLA salaries and what they

The documentary featured medical people and people with PhDs, and they showed how genetically modified foods contributed to the proliferation of cancer, birth defects, diabetes, autism, infertility, allergies, obesity, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, muscular dystrophy, irritable bowel syndrome, Parkinson’s, and other digestive and neurological problems. Eating genetically modified foods is eating DNA that will program your organs. The way genetically modified corn is effective against insects is that each corn kernel produces an insecticide; upon eating this kernel, the insect dies. Mother Nature gives this insect the smarts to avoid this kernel, so it is effective in pesticide control. It has been found that when we eat beef fed on genetically modified corn our organs absorb the capacity to produce this insecticide. Seventy per cent of all processed food today has genetically modified corn or soy or both. Whipped dressing mayonnaise has soybean oil and modified cornstarch. Cream of mushroom soup has modified cornstarch and hydrogenated soybean oil. Monsanto’s
genetically engineered bovine growth hormone has been shown to have many health hazards, including a cancer-accelerating hormone associated with breast, prostate and colon cancer. An eminent Scottish scientist accidently discovered that genetically modified potatoes severely damaged the immune system and organs of rats, and he was suspended from the prestigious institute where he had worked for 35 years. Mice, rats, cattle, pigs, geese, elk and squirrels will avoid eating genetically modified feed when given a choice. There is worldwide resistance to genetically modified foods. African nations won’t accept genetically modified foods as aid. In Brazil there are five million farmers suing Monsanto in a joint action suit. U.S. exports of corn and soy are down, and the U.S. is blaming European Union resistance, so in May 2003 the U.S. filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization charging EU’s restrictive policy is against international trade agreements. In Canada, the Royal Society of Canada report said it was “scientifically unjustifiable to presume that genetically modified foods are safe.” Recently, the state of California wanted to legislate that genetically modified foods had to be labeled. Monsanto, DuPont, Pepsi, Bayer, Dow Chemical, Kraft Foods, Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s Campbell’s Soup, Heinz, Sara Lee, Snickers and Welch’s raised $145 million to fight against this legislation. Monsanto was the biggest contributor, and the multinationals won. Once in a while, we buy No Name creamed corn. I phoned the number on the label and asked if they used genetically modified corn, I was left waiting a long time for an answer; finally the nice lady came on and said she couldn’t tell me if the corn was genetically modified, but if I wanted to be sure, I should buy their organically certified products. Before I undertook to write this letter, I thought that I would review that documentary that I had filed away. Lo and behold, it has been removed from the Internet. If genetically modified foods are so benign and harmless to us, why all the secrecy and subversion? Alex Ewashen Creston

Well, that’s it for another year and like the Y2K thing 13 years ago, the Mayan end of the world thing appears to also have been a bust and we are now faced with having to shovel the driveway, pay off the credit cards and try and lose a few pounds we obtained by chowing down with wild abandon this past few weeks. We are also faced with hearing about New Year ’s resolutions or feeling pressured to make some (in my case the pressure is because I need to let my belt out a notch or two) but I have to admit we are closet supporters of resolutions because on the health front we can actually help you achieve some of them. Qualifying that thought, however, are the usual stats that by Jan. 7 a third will have broken their resolutions and by Valentine’s Day half will have lapsed, closely followed by July 1, where 60 per cent of resolutions will have been forgotten. Apparently, there is a successful five-stage resolution process but you would have to have started it in July. Oh
well — just remember we are here to support you for as long as you need or want us, plus we also have some pretty talented instructors and personal training staff that really know their stuff.
We had our last meeting of 2012 here a week or so ago and one question that came up was on the subject of memorable moments this past year. While there were several event-related accomplishments, interestingly enough the conversation seem to always come back to facility patrons and specific successes that they achieved — whether it was renewed health brought about by regular visits, avoidance of surgery by following a

A year to forget
If there was a Hall of Fame for years I can’t imagine that 2012 would be getting much support for its induction. Mostly, looking back, it was a year of shocking weather events, yet more problems in the Middle East and, in Canada, a further erosion of the democratic values we supposedly believe to be important. The Occupy Movement seems to have pretty much fizzled without having accomplished much of anything, if nothing else proof that corporate interests have outstripped government in terms of real power. After having nearly brought the world to its economic knees a couple of years ago, Wall Street financial folks have hardly missed a beat as they continue to rake in obscene amounts of cash for creating ever more quasi-legal tools in their modern metatphysical quest to turn lead, or paper, into gold. In Canada, we have a glimmer of hope in a new protest movement inspired by the federal government’s latest omnibus bill. While other Canadians were napping, or busy running up more credit card bills before Christmas, it took a number of First Nations women to notice that Harper’s crew has once again been busy as proverbial beavers, gnawing away at our rights and freedoms. And isn’t it juicily ironic that that the prime minister who for all the world behaves like he apprenticed in the pre-fall of the Iron Curtain Kremlin, continues to impart the same Republican values that seem now to be eroding south of the border? In sporting news, Canadians finally have finally found something in common, agreeing that they hate NHL players and owners with equal
groups turned away for funding with the demise of the popular grant-inaid program. Unless, that is, they are canny enough to apply for money under an amorphous and unnamed discretionary fund. It appears that the next year and a half will be devoted to rumours that the affable and always interesting John Kettle will be running for mayor in the next municipal election, rumours started by Kettle himself. He was caught in the swift moving water and carried down river through a set of white water rapids before pulling himself onto a tiny rock ledge at the bottom of the canyon. August 2 — The Kootenay Zone may have brought home 15 medals from the 2012 BC Summer Games, but only one matters to Kieran Simpson: the bronze he earned in the long jump competition. His longest jump was 5.32 meters, which put him in third place, behind Valemount’s Omar Medina, who won with 5.95 metres. •The Ktunaxa annual general assembly included the renewal of an agreement designed to improve health outcomes for First Nations people in the East Kootenay. Ktunaxa Nation chair Kathryn Teneese and Interior Health Authority board chair Norman Embree re-signed a letter of understanding (LOU) at the Lower Kootenay on July 25. •Katrina Tarrant’s first time on the water came when she was 14. RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said police, ambulance and fire department personnel were called to the scene after 5 p.m. “Three young brothers were climbing around the trusses,” he said. “One slipped off and fell to the ground below. It was a drop of 40 to 60 feet.”
•Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie was presented with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal on Aug. 26 by Richard Blackwolf, president of the Canadian Aboriginal Veterans and Serving Members Association. Louie was a recipient of one of 80 medals the association was asked to distribute to selected members across Canada. passed too close, despite having plenty of room to share the road. “They flew up the hill past me with the wide trailer missing my shoulder by no more than 13 inches,” he said. “The force of the air dam that he was pushing almost blew me off of the road and down the cliff.” •Kootenay Lake author Luanne Armstrong wrote a book for young readers, I’ll Be Home Soon, which chronicles the harrowing story of Regan, a 13-year-old who lives with her mom in Vancouver ’s downtown eastside. When her mom doesn’t return from a promised two- or three-day absence, Regan is left to fend for herself and, eventually to unravel the mystery of her disappearance. 16 — Nearly a week after a lightning strike started a wildfire on Mount Thompson, crews continued to battle a blaze that had grown to 56 hectares (138 acres) on Aug. 13. The fire started during an Aug. 8 electrical storm and crews were on the scene by Aug. 10. As many as six helicopters supported a crew of 36, many of which are rappel specialists, trained to fight fires in steep, rocky terrain. •Ten Creston Fire Rescue firefighters spent two hours putting out a suspicious wildfire near the Crawford Hill water reservoir on Aug. 4. “There are trails and tree forts in the area,” Deputy Chief Michael Moore said in a press release. “It appears that it is frequented by youth.” The fire, approximately 50 feet by 100 feet in size, was located just west of the Erickson water reservoir and about 600 feet from the closest residence. • When Irvin and Evelyn Sobry signed a five-year lease to house their new electronics business on Canyon Street 19 months earlier, they thought they would have at least five years operating as the Source. That expectation changed in April when the couple learned by email that they were among more than 160 stores across
Canada whose contracts were being cancelled. They remained in business, reopening as Lectric Avenue Electronics. 23 — Creston cherry grower Jenny Faynor said the 2012 late season cherry harvest has its challenges but, compared to recent years, “it’s a big crop that ranges in quality from pretty good to very good.” Faynor, with her husband, Rick, had about 36 acres of cherries in production. They operate their own sorting and packing facility, hiring about 50 local residents to sort, pack and weigh Lapin, Staccato and Sweetheart varieties for distribution to retailers in Asia, Europe and even Florida. •Disaster was narrowly averted on Aug. 19 when a vehicle went over the bank on Highway 3 and into a campsite near Canyon-Lister Road. “Fortunately, the campers weren’t in their tent,” said Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan. “They were sitting around the campfire.” The male driver and a female occupant in the vehicle both were taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The driver told police he was tired and simply failed to negotiate the tight curve above the campsite. •Creston hit the national airwaves in a live TSN broadcast on Aug. 17 — part of winning the Kraft Celebration Tour — and the organizers couldn’t be happier. “I’m so excited not only for Creston and the Creston Valley, but the Kootenays,” said Myrna Johnson, the driving force behind the campaign to see Creston host the tour and SportsCentre broadcast. “All of Canada gets to see what we get to see every day, and they can see our pride and support.” A large crowd enjoyed free samples of Kraft products on the field at the Creston and District Community Complex (CDCC), then headed up to the parking lot, where a portable TSN stage was set up to air SportsCentre, which featured a segment on Creston’s

Bob Gollan. “The thieves seemed to just be after cash.” •Josh Hepditch became the new head coach and general manger of the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, and the recent arrival couldn’t be happier with his new home. “I’m blown away. It’s an extremely friendly, supportive town from what I’ve seen so far,” he said, adding that he and his wife, Kathryn, were invited to spend their first night in town at her employers’ home, even though the Creston PhysioWorks and More owners hadn’t met the couple. 13 — A garage door that was scheduled to be removed as the Ingham Arts and Culture Centre renovations progress was the victim of a runaway construction trailer on Sept. 5. “Thank goodness it didn’t hit a bearing wall or that no one was walking or cycling on the sidewalk when the trailer came free,” said Simon Lazarchuk, a director of the Friends of the Ingham Arts and Culture Centre Society, the group that took on the challenge of turning the building on Canyon Street at 15th Avenue into a performance and display space. •Three Creston Valley names were among 13 Nelson-Creston residents nominated for a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Creston’s Phil Thomas and Anne Hepher, and Sirdar’s Shannon Nickisch were selected by a short listing committee that met Sept. 4 to narrow a list of nominations submitted to Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall’s office in August. From the 13, the public would vote online or by phone to choose the final four. 20 — What started as a homeowner burning grass in an Erickson Road yard led to a house burning to the ground on Sept. 13. Upon arrival, the fire department was met with a house that was significantly involved with fire, an adjacent shed fully involved in fire, as well as a vehicle parked next to the house. “Due to the size of the fire, the only safe approach was a defensive mode, keeping firefighters outside of the structure,” said Creston Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Michael Moore. •Two suspects in the recent rash of thefts and break and entries pleaded guilty to six charges on Sept. 17. They left court after receiving $650 fines. One of the culprits was identified when an RCMP member recognized his face from a surveillance camera photo. He had ridden to the police detachment on a stolen bike. He was arrested and his accomplice was later located at a campsite, where police found some marijuana and a large array of stolen property. The pair left Creston, returning to Ontario with a parent, who came when notified about the crimes the young men had committed. •Creston-brewed Budweiser should hit store shelves in the spring of 2013, Labatt Breweries of Canada has announced. To produce Budweiser, an investment of $1.4 million will be made to expand the Columbia Brewery’s capacity and accommodate Bud’s unique brewing process. •Five years after planting an orchard above Duck Lake, Wynnwood Cellars Estate Winery finally opened its doors to the public. “We are getting a very positive response,” said winery partner Dave Basaraba. “We wanted to start with a soft opening so that we don’t create do much momentum — we don’t have a huge supply of wine just yet.” •The Crawford Bay Store started a new chapter in June when it expanded and reopened as the Crawford Bay Market. Creston Fire Rescue was called to the scene at the corner of Highway 3 and 33rd Avenue South, where a Chrysler Intrepid had gone off the road, striking the motorhome’s propane tank. “No one was in the motorhome at the time, fortunately,” said fire Chief Bruce Mabin. October 4 — There wasn’t a lot of English conversation going on in a house on 16th Avenue South, but the smiles of seven new residents seemed to indicate they were getting along just fine.
The family, sponsored by the Creston Refugee Committee (CRC), arrived in Creston on July 22 after living for 14 years in a refugee camp in Thailand, near the border of their native Myanmar (formerly Burma). “These families coming to B.C. is the result of efforts by the East Kootenay Friends of Burma,” CRC volunteer Linda Price said. “I saw a presentation by the group and we decided to help out.” •Following an online and phone-in vote — which itself followed a monthlong nomination process — Sirdar's Shannon Nickisch was one of four NelsonCreston residents who would receive a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal from MLA Michelle Mungall. 11 — Creston’s Alan Armstrong was making a routine run to Cranbrook on Oct. 2 when his trip turned into a nightmare that later ended with a shooting in Cranbrook. “I was hauling parts on Highway 3 through Goatfell when I saw a guy waving me down on the road. He said he had run out of gas and had no money and needed a ride,” Armstrong said. The carjacker put a gun to Amrstrong’s head, pepper-sprayed him, then pushed him out the truck before tearing off in the 2006 Toyota Forerunner. •Former Creston and District Public Library chief librarian Ann Day recently received the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy’s Community Literacy Award, placing ahead of seven other nominees and following in the footsteps of winners Vicky Koenig and Family Place (2011) and Kootenay Employment Services (2010) after a round of public voting. “This community has repaid me a million times for the work I did,” said Day. “This just blows me away.” •The purchase of two Duck Lake properties from Wynndel Box and Lumber by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) was intended to benefit grizzly bear and northern leopard frog populations. The sale involved 306 acres (124 hectares), some of which was currently in agricultural production, which would continue. “Protecting this land in the valley bottom is vitally important for the long‐term prospects of the South Selkirk grizzly bear population,” said Nancy Newhouse, Canadian Rockies program manager for the NCC. •The Delta Police Department was called in to investigate an incident involving Creston RCMP in a local pub early on Oct. 6. RCMP were called by pub staff to remove a female patron who was refusing to leave the establishment. While arresting and removing the female, a male patron
obstructed and was injured in the confrontation with police officers, according to RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk. 18 — More than 100 people gathered at Adam Robertson Elementary School on Oct. 11 to witness a first for the Creston Valley. A totem pole, the culmination of a project that began with a grant application to build a small park on the school grounds four years ago, was erected. It was carved under the supervision of local carver Michael Price, with help from numerous students, notably Kaydon Booth. ARES principal Rod Giles credited former parent advisory council member Deryn Collier and teacher Judy Gadicke for “planting the seed and obtaining the funding for an indigenous garden.” •The 2012 Reach a Reader campaign to raise funds for literacy programs in the Creston Valley topped $1,760 yesterday. Local politicians, volunteers and Creston Valley Thunder Cat players took to the streets on Oct. 3 to encourage donations to Creston’s Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) branch. In a surprise move, Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks kicked in a $500 grant-in-aid, which Area B director John Kettle readily agreed to match. Mayor Ron Toyota made a healthy personal donation, helping to increase the 2012 fundraising effort by $1,200 over 2011. 25 — Creston Valley orchardists Gary and Susan Snow capped a surreal month on Oct. 10 by accepting an award for making the world’s best pure juice at an industry conference in Barcelona, Spain. Tabletree black cherry juice had bested the other finalist for the award, Nudie Juice, the largest juice producer in Australia. “WE WON!!!” Susan Snow reacted on Facebook following the awards ceremony. “We are bringing home the gold. We are so excited. We actually have the ‘Best Pure Juice in the World.’ ” •A four-hour standoff between Creston RCMP and a male break and enter suspect was resolved without violence on Oct. 19. The subject had fled the scene to a 16th avenue residence, where he barricaded himself inside with his common-law spouse and her two children. Four hours later, shortly after RCMP members had obtained a warrant to enter the residence and arrest the subject, he surrendered peacefully. November 1 — A hectic week for Creston Fire Rescue peaked Oct. 23 when a house on 16th Avenue North was razed. The resident family escaped without harm from a blaze that was called in at about 6:20 a.m. The cause of the blaze was determined to be accidental, with damage estimated at $350,000. “The occupants were very fortunate to have been awoken,” deputy fire Chief Michael Moore said in reference to smoke alarms not being installed due to recent renovations in the home. “Smoke alarms are the most important item in your home to ensure you get out alive.” •Creston Valley school students were reaping the benefits of the Harvest Share program by getting out of the classroom and into fields, gardens and orchards. “Most of the schools have participated and the kids are having a blast,” program co-ordinator Alexandra Dansereau said in a Canyon field, and smiled as a gung-ho Adam Robertson Elementary School student arrived at her pickup truck (the lease donated by Kokanee Ford) with yet another 50- or 60-pound box of potatoes. Students from Canyon-Lister Elementary School, Yaqan Nukiy School and Prince Charles Secondary School also volunteered with the program. •Two of Creston’s creative geniuses, Brandy Dyer and Natalie Santano, teamed to publish a book they call A Grateful Heart. The proceeds from the book featuring community submissions with photos by Santano were donated to the pregnancy outreach program run by the Creston and District Community Resource Centre. Area C director Larry Binks voiced his concern about the length of time it has taken to get the kitchen built. “I was at a hockey game on the weekend and I got complaints about it,” he said. “It’s now almost two months since the contract was awarded. For me, that’s not good enough — it’s embarrassing the hell out of me.” •Providers of the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS) were looking for an alternative to the portable trailers it has called home for many years. “We are looking for long-term sustainability, and we have been exploring the possible use of Rotacrest,” said Serena Naeve, executive director of the Creston and Dsitrict Community Resource Centre (CRC), which operates TAPS. “It’s a question of how we co-ordinate long term planning for seniors in the valley. “Our current facility is deteriorating rapidly and the school district (which leases the facility to CRC) has said it won’t put any more money into the building. We have done all we can do with it.” 15 — In what has become an annual tradition, Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church was collecting for Operation Christmas Child, a program that sees toys, school supplies and more delivered to children in developing countries. More than 400 boxes were shipped from Creston in 2011 and the numbers were similar in 2012, said Glad Tidings Pastor Gary Forsyth, thanks to the efforts of Kelly Miller and Ann Cote. “He’s been setting people up and getting them organized,” said Forsyth. “She’s been heading up getting them into schools.” •The fourth annual Creston’s Best Singer contest would be bigger than before, said producer Vern Gorham. The 2013 edition will be comprised of four nights, expanded from two (quarterfinal and semifinal/final) in 2011 and 2012, starting with a youth divi-
sion contest on Jan. 17 at Prince Charles Theatre. The youth contest will be open to singers 14 and under, and the top two will advance to the semifinal round on Feb. 14, competing against the top 20 adults singers from the Jan. 31 quarterfinal. The top 10 from the semifinal will compete in the final round on March 7. 22 — Sirdar’s Shannon Nickisch received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal on Nov. 18 in Nelson. About 70 people gathered in the Hume Hotel’s Hume Room for a reception led by NelsonCreston MLA Michelle Mungall, who also organized voting for four recipients in her riding. Over 700 online and phone-in votes were recorded, with Salmo’s Dorothy Hearn, Nelson’s Joan Reichardt and Kaslo’s Bruce Walker being selected along with Nickisch. “It was a complete surprise that someone put my name in,” Nickisch said. “It’s been quite an honour.” •The Town of Creston received a report on its options for the operations of cemeteries, including the valley’s largest, Forest Lawn Cemetery. Former Regional District of Central Kootenay treasurer Barry McLean reported to council on Nov. 13 that it had limited options and recommended that it try to negotiate a continued costsharing agreement with the Regional District of Central Kootenay, which notified the town earlier in the year that it intended to pull out of the funding for Creston cemetery operations in two years. In 2011 and 2012, the regional district provided $36,000 grants toward the operation of Forest Lawn. Under an agreement established in 1977, the town and areas A, B and C have contributed to its operation based on a tax of the participants’ property assessments. RDCK areas, however, are not obligated to contribute. •Nearly eight months after it opened to traffic, an official ceremony and ribbon cutting were held for the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) port of entry facility at Kingsgate on Nov. 15. goods, travel and trade across our shared border with the United States, and improvements to CBSA facilities such as this one help ensure that this gets done in an efficient and effective manner,” he said. 29 — A new system to deal with bylaw infractions including noise, animal control and unsightly property would take effect in December. “In the past, bylaw disputes were handled in the provincial court system,” said Mayor Ron Toyota. “Arguing minor bylaw infractions in court was often impractical, due to the time and costs involved. … “If someone disputed a $50 ticket, because we don’t have a court registry in town, the bylaw officer would have to travel to Cranbrook. Then he would have to issue a summons to the disputant for a court hearing, and it just went on from there. bilked her out of hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars. “I picked up the phone and a voice said, ‘Hello, Grandma,’ ” Brown said. “ ‘I need help.’ ” Believing that her grandson was in Eastern Canada and not Vancouver, Brown became wary. “It really bothers me that older people are targeted in these scams and I’d like to warn others to ask questions that only their real grandchildren (or other relative) would know the answer to,” Brown said. December 6 — Organizers of the Creston Valley Bird Fest walked out of the Nov. 27 Creston town council meeting with another $1,000 in the coffers after receiving a startup grant for the 2013 inaugural event. Bird Fest is starting small, project planner Tanna Patterson said, with evening events scheduled for May 10 and activities throughout May 11, which is also International Migratory Bird Day. Operating as a committee of the Creston Valley branch of Wildsight, the festival’s goal is “to encourage environmental awareness for young and old with support from the community.” •It was a busy summer and fall for Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and Yellowhead Road and Bridge (YRB) crews in the Creston Valley, with 43 kilometres of road being resurfaced in various ways, for a total of $3.2 million. The main work was a project that saw “mill-and-fill” resurfacing on five kilometres of Highway 3 from Kootenay Pass summit to the east chain-up area and on Highway 3 from Canyon-Lister Road to the Arrow Creek Bridge, the latter portion also receiving a new guardrail. •The Ministry of Environment, Regional District of
Central Kootenay and Town of Creston teamed up to fund a woodstove exchange program, according to Environment Minister Terry Lake. The RDCK would receive $15,750 as one of 48 regional districts the province adds to wood stove program, which will total $192,000 for 2013. Creston town council voted Nov. 27 to add a $100 rebate for stoves exchanged in Creston residences, and pick up the $20 disposal fee at the landfill for the replaced stove. •An eagle-eyed RCMP officer saved an 85-year-old woman from spending a potentially lifethreatening night in car that went down a steep embankment on Highway 21 on Nov. 26. “We got a call in the evening that she had left at 2 p.m. to go to Porthill and hadn’t returned,” said RCMP Cpl. Monte Taylor. “When we checked with the border we learned she hadn’t crossed that day.” Taylor and Const. Ryan Salant began to patrol Highway 21 for clues late in the evening. Salant scrambled down an embankment while Taylor radioed for an ambulance. The woman was uninjured, but had remained in the car, knowing that she would be unable to make it up the steep slope to the highway. She was chilled and uncomfortable after spending more than eight hours in a car that she couldn’t restart. 13 — A 52-year-old Creston woman, Clara Elliott, died in a head-on collision five kilometres south of Cranbrook on Highway 3/95 on Dec. 5, when the northbound minivan in which she was a passenger crossed the centre line and struck a southbound dump truck. The minivan’s driver sustained minor injuries, but Elliott was trapped in the vehicle and died at the scene. The dump truck’s driver was uninjured. •A year in which the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market has grown dramatically has helped solidify the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition (CVFAC) as one of Creston Valley’s most important organizations. Earlier in the year, farmers’ market managers and volunteers worked with the British Columbia Association of Farmers’ Markets to detail the social and economic benefits of the market in the Creston Valley. “The estimated benefit of the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market to the local economy is approximately $1.72 million annually,” said CVFAC president Len Parkin. •Extra Foods was the scene of a robbery on Dec. 9 when a male told the pharmacist on duty that he had a gun and wanted some diazepam. Creston RCMP said the male then attempted to leave through a locked entrance before exiting through the store’s front entrance. Police arrested a suspect at a residence a short time later and now believe he was bluffing about having a gun. He was taken into custody and would likely face armed robbery charges. 20 — Waiting until after midnight to get municipal election results could become a thing of the past if the Town of Creston adopts an electronic voting system, town council learned at the Dec. 11 regular meeting. From page 11 Bhar Sihota, who is doing a local government management internship at Creston Town Hall, presented a report that indicates that other small municipalities, including Nelson and Castlegar, are already successfully using electronic systems. “The role of the machine is to electronically count the ballots and record the results, and it is not expected to make the act of voting quicker,” he said. •A good-natured competition led to a few laughs and a big score for the Creston Valley Gleaners Society food bank. When Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie arrived at the food bank on Dec. 14, in one of two vehicles needed to transport more than 700 pounds of non-perishable food items, Creston Mayor Ron Toyota knew he had met his match. “Wow, very impressive,” he said, watching box after box stack up, as Louie and LKB administrator Linda Berg piled about 15 boxes behind the two boxes Toyota had brought from Creston Town Hall. •The Town of Creston and local Regional District of Central Kootenay put one contentious issue to bed at the Dec. 13 RDCK board meeting in Nelson. A new Arrow Creek water services agreement was signed, assuring five of years of peace for the two sides. But a proposed contract for Creston to continue fire protection for Erickson properties was moved
Thursday, January 3, 2013 Creston Valley Advance into a closed meeting and later referred to lawyers. •The children of Shamattawa, Man., had plenty to smile about again at Christmas, after nearly a ton of Creston apples and an assortment of gifts arrived earlier in December. “The children were thrilled,” said local organizer Muriel Buhr. “So thrilled that one classroom went trooping over to Shamattawa’s RCMP detachment with a thank you card for Staff Sgt. Maria Russell that they made themselves.” •Creston Valley Teachers’ Association president Rebecca Blair appeared at the Dec. 11 council meeting to ask for support in pushing a child poverty reduction issue. Coun. Judy Gadicke made a motion, which passed, to write a letter of support to the appropriate ministry. A second motion, to direct staff to begin work on a draft resolution to be put forward to the Union of BC Municipalities, also passed unanimously. •More than 70 volunteers swarmed the Creston Room at the Creston and District Community Complex on Dec. 18 to pack Christmas hampers, part of an annual program overseen by the Creston Ministerial Association. The need was great — 485 hampers were packed for Creston Valley families, 35 more than the planned 450, a goal based on the 2011 numbers. 27 — Joining with a group of peace-seeking women who
brought together women from Israel and Palestine in November was a giant step out of Kendra Lee’s comfort zone. The registered massage therapist, mother of three and grandmother of six was quite content with her mostly quiet and orderly life until a BraveHeart Women’s meeting presented her with an opportunity she couldn’t resist — an odyssey for peace. “I had never been overseas before,” she says. “I’ve been to Mexico and the Dominican Republic, across Canada and the States, but never overseas.” •School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) board said no to the education minister’s request to find 1.5 per cent in savings to be used in upcoming contract negotiations with CUPE. SD8 already faces additional cost pressures throughout its 2013 budget. Board chair Melanie Joy cited an unfunded anti-bullying/violence threat risk assessment, a ministry reading initiative and increases to WorkSafeBC and Medical Services Plan premiums. “To add $330,000 in CUPE wages and wage sensitive benefits under the co-operative gains mandate to an already significant shortfall of $1.13 million is beyond the board’s ability to balance its budget without cutting educational programming to students and services to staff and families,” she wrote.

Obituaries Franz Herman Dill (Frank Jr.) December 21, 1950 ~ December 17, 2012 It is with great sadness that the family of Frank Jr. announce his passing on Monday, December 17, 2012.
Frank left us peacefully, surrounded by his family at his home in Kootenay Bay…four days short of “the end of the world as we know it” and his 62nd birthday. Frank was born in Heidelberg, Germany on December 21, 1950. There he attended university and was in the army. It was while in the army he took part in the 1972 Olympics in Munich. Frank moved to Canada in 1973 and worked as a carpenter/craftsman with his dad, Frank Sr. Frank became very skilled at his trade under his dad’s leadership and loved working with his dad for many years. A “teacher” of history and politics, Frank had an incredible memory of facts and details. Conversations with Frank were always enlightening and we will miss the stories and “opinions” he so loved to share. Frank was predeceased by his mom, Frieda on December 16, 2010, also from cancer. Frank will be forever missed by his wife Suzanne Dill; his dad, Frank Sr. Dill; sister, Ricki (Jules) Morin; niece Julie (Dwayne) Sol, their son Logan; nephew Randy (Nicole) Morin; his aunt Baerbel; and many friends. Many thanks to all the wonderful people involved in helping Frank with his journey. Your support and compassion was so appreciated. By Frank’s request there will be no service.

Glendon Clarence (Glen) Habart October 23, 1933 ~ December 20, 2012
After a full life, Glen passed away peacefully at the Peter Lougheed Santuari Hospice in Calgary, AB on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at the age of 79 years. Glen was born in Blaeberry, BC. Glen and Eloise enjoyed many camping trips with their children and grandchildren at Kootenay Lake; teaching them how to water ski and Àsh. They also embraced the opportunity to travel to Mexico, Arizona, Alaska and Cuba. Glen was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and Àshing. He loved the trees and the mountains where he could breathe the fresh air of the forest. Glen was an excellent gardener and was always willing to share his vegetables with whoever happened to come by. Most of his working days were spent in the ‘woods’ as he liked to say, where he was a foreman for Crestbrook Forest Industries for many years. Glen had many good friends and a great sense of humour. He always had a story or two to tell which was how he earned the nickname “camp tramp!” Glen was predeceased by his parents and his brother Lorne Habart. He leaves Eloise, his beloved wife of 58 years; his son Robin (Cheryl); daughters Lynn (Blaine) and Janna (Lester); Àve grandchildren, Joshua (Melanie), Jeremy, Breanne (Matthew), Carly (Jason), and Daniel; Àve great-grandchildren; brother Brian; sisters Emily, Lorraine (Jerry), and Bonnie (Warren); and several nieces and nephews. We would like to thank the wonderful hospital staff at the Foothills Hospital, Pulmonary Care Unit and the Peter Lougheed Santuari Hospice in Calgary, for their outstanding care and support of our dad. A big thank you to all our friends and family for their support in this most difÀcult time. At his request, there will be no service. Glen will be forever in our hearts and missed tremendously by everyone.

Ferdinand (Ferry) Strobl
May 13, 1931 ~ December 14, 2012 Ferdinand (Ferry) Strobl passed away on December 14, 2012 at the age of 81 years, after a battle with cancer. Ferry was born to parents Franz and Theresia Strobl on May 13, 1931 in Graz, Austria. Ferdinand was an electrician while in Austria and when he Àrst moved to Canada, in 1951, he worked in a coalmine in Fernie, BC. After this, he moved to Prince George and continued doing electrical work until he opened his own company. In 1967, he started A=U Ski 9illage at the Pine Pass and then in 1989 moved to Wynndel, BC to retire.
Ferry loved skiing, his Áoatplane, the mountains, the outdoors and especially his big family and all his friends.
Ferry was predeceased by his parents Franz and Theresia Strobl of Austria and his brother Franz Strobl of Austria; and Douglas Strobl of Salmon Arm.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife Karla; children Ron (Caroline), Margit, Brenda, Jamie, Eric (Marjorie) and Joyann and many grandchildren. Ferdinand’s ashes will be spread in his beloved mountains at the Pine Pass, BC in the summer of 2013. Until we meet again, we will miss you. David (Dave) Kuny passed away at his Creston residence with family by his side on December 26, 2012 at the age of 72 years, after a lengthy illness. Dave was born to Caroline and Peter Kuny on April 15, 1940 at Tisdale, SK, where he received his education. He married Sharon Townsend in Tisdale, SK on July 28, 1962, and had three children before moving to British Columbia. Dave worked in the plumbing and heating business in Saskatchewan and British Columbia and was employed at Pyramid Builders for some 20 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and enjoyed spending hours in his garden, Àshing and hunting. Dave was predeceased by his daughter Caren; parents Caroline and Peter Kuny; brothers Frank, Tony, Mike, and sister Josephine. Dave will be dearly missed by his loving wife Sharon; sons Robert (Lori) and Dean (Colleen); grandchildren Taylor and Jared; brother Adam (May); sister Mary (Norman), and many nieces and nephews. The Memorial Funeral Service is to be held on Friday January 4, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Redeemer Lutheran Church with 3astor +arry +aberstocN ofÀciatinJ. Dr. Keith Marling (Doc)

The Marling family, with extreme sadness, announces the passing of Dr. Keith Marling, affectionately known as Doc. Keith was born in Willowdale, Ontario August 31, 1932. He passed away peacefully at home on December 13, 2012 with his devoted wife and best friend Anne, by his side. Doc was passionate about his career as a veterinarian, Ă€shing, farming, gardening and travelling. He attained his lifelong dream of being a veterinarian by getting summer jobs on the west coast to pay his way through the Ontario Veterinary College back east in Guelph. “Animals Firstâ€? was always his motto. He loved his profession so much he was often quoted as saying, “I have never worked a day in my life.â€? By invitation from Charlie Sutcliffe and the Dairy Association, Dr. Marling moved with his family to the Creston Valley in May of 1958. Doc began his career working side by side with Charlie to care for and establish a herd management program. Doc Ă€rst set up his veterinary clinic in the basement of his 6th Avenue home. In 1963 he built the Kootenay Animal Clinic on Canyon Street where he continued his practice until 2009, and retired as the longest practicing veterinarian in British Columbia. During that time he ooprovided services from Invermere to
Grand Forks, Kaslo to Nelson, and was the Àrst to have veterinary anaesthetic and x-ray machines in the Kootenays. Using this equipment, Keith and Anne were thankful for the end of long nights waiting for animals to wake up from surgery. Dr. Marling dedicated time to many community committees and the town council. He was instrumental in establishing the Àrst volunteer Àre hall as well. He was always supportive of his town and attended community events until his last days. Keith was a man of few words but they held great impact and wisdom, usually followed by a quote of life from a book, famous author or scripture. His knowledge was far beyond, and not limited to veterinary work. The doors to his home and practice were always open to people and animals, great and small. He now joins departed family, son Joe, friends and animals he so greatly cared for. Keith leaves behind the love of his life Anne; brother Gary (Bev); children: Daryl (Sharon), Linda and Kyle (Lynn); grandchildren: Bryan, Amanda, Nick, Laura and Adam; and great grandson Jaxon. Nieces and nephews include: Joe, Cam, Brett, Jade, Seth, Rob, Gord and Jennifer. Son and daughters by choice: David, Lana and Dana. We are all better people for having Doc in our lives. We will always remember you and forever miss you, beloved father, husband and friend. May you watch over us all and guide us through life, until we can join you on your ranch in paradise and eternal Àshing trips. We Love you Pa, our Dear Doc!

Documentary running at library explores the many faces of debt
CRESTON AND DISTRICT PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Creston and District Public Library’s National Film Board Film Club feature for January is the documentary, Payback, by award-winning director Jennifer Baichwal. Payback offers a fascinating look at debt and how it influences relationships, societies, governing structures and even the fate of the planet. Debt is all around us — the debt we are familiar with — household and government financial debt — and areas of debt that we rarely consider: environmental debt, where the impacts of natural resource depletion and environmental degradation will be paid by future generations, or physical debt, where we discount the lifestyle of the past and present and its affects on our health of the future. There is kinship debt, allowing hurts and wrongs to affect relationships that can have cross-generational impacts, and even societal or cultural debt, where norms in a given society create debt to its peoples. Based on Margaret Atwood’s bestselling book Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth, which was originally composed for the 2008 Massey Lectures series broadcast by CBC Radio, the film explores the link between debtor and creditor in a variety of contexts and situations — a years-long blood feud between two Albanian families, the BP oil spill, tomato farm workers in Florida and their bosses, media mogul Conrad Black and the U.S. justice system — while addressing debt in all its forms: societal, personal, environmental, spiritual, criminal and, of course, economic. Featuring stunning cinematography and insightful commentary by Raj Patel, Louise Arbour, Karen Armstrong, William Rees, Conrad Black and Margaret Atwood, Payback is a brilliant, game-changing reflection on the subject of debt, produced by Ravida Din for the National Film Board of Canada. Baichwal has been directing and producing documentaries for 18 years. Her films have played all over the world and won awards nationally and internationally including Let it Come Down: The Life of Paul Bowles (1998), The Holier It Gets (1999) and The True Meaning of Pictures (2003). Manufactured Landscapes (2007), about the work of artist Edward Burtynsky, was released theatrically in over 15 countries, while Act of God (2009) opened the Hot Docs film festival. Baichwal is currently in production on a film about water with Edward Burtynsky, Nick de Pencier and Daniel Iron. Din is an Executive Producer at the National Film Board of Canada (Quebec and Atlantic Production Centres). Credits include Pink Ribbons, Inc. (directed by Léa Pool, 2011), The Socalled Movie (directed by Garry Beitel, 2010), Jelena’s Song (directed by Pablo Alvarez-Mesa, 2010) and Family Motel (directed by Helene Klodawsky, 2007). Payback is her most recent production. Payback will be preceded by the animated short film, The Visitor. A young boy plays with his toys while left alone in a large, empty house.
Suddenly, a dark cloud starts to seep in through the mail slot in the front door. It begins to take shape — the shape of a monster! The boy runs away, but the creature is always near. The chase will not end until the boy discovers the true source of his fears. Admission is free to Payback and The Visitor, which will run on Jan. 10 at 7 p.m., at the Creston and District Public Library (531 16th Ave. S.). Running time is 86 minutes. Please note that the NFB Film Club films are not necessarily added to the library’s collection. If you want to see a film, please attend the screening at the library. The Prince Charles Secondary School senior boys volleyball team enjoyed a great week of volleyball at the B.C. provincials, held in Kelowna from Nov. 27-Dec. 1. In round robin play, the boys defeated Cambie in three sets (24-26, 25-22, 15-9) and Vernon (25-16, 21-25, 15-9). They were defeated by Charles Hays (Prince Rupert) 25-13 and 25-22. In October, 40 women met at the Ramada Creston Hotel to learn about BraveHeart Women, a new organization that shows women how to empower themselves and take action in their community and the world for positive change. Debby Johnson, Annette Agabob, Kendra Lee and Amber Ward hosted this day of inspiration and chapter launch party. The concepts grew from a young Iranian girl’s dreams after she fled the Iran-Iraq War with her family and emigrated to the U.S. she quickly learned the power of hope, dreams and inspiration. As a young woman, medical doctor Ellie Drake created a platform to teach women how they can help each other as a group in supporting positive solutions for harmony within their lives. BraveHeart Women originally began as an online community in 2009 with a goal to connect and communicate in meaningful ways with likeminded women from around the globe, explore their life purpose and learn the art of creating and collaborating. It is social networking with a strong purpose to inspire women to be, create and collaborate and is attracting attention from inspired world leaders and celebrities. Change means facing the fear of change, and Drake teaches conscious breathing and other practices to help women activate the naturally occurring hormone oxytocin as a platform for growth and evolution. Oxytocin is what psychologists call the “tend and befriend” hormone, and is in both men and women. Oxytocin helps to transform fear and stress caused by being in survival mode to states of thriving by promot-
ing calmness and empathy. Some Creston members of BraveHeart spoke about how switching to an oxytocin state of being has changed their stress reactions, making them more effective in making decisions and has improved all aspect of their lives. The BraveHeart Women online community of over 400,000 birthed the BraveHeart Women Resonate foundation in 2011 with its global mission of creating world harmony at the grassroots level through the development of local chapters that began in January 2012. The presenters explained how oxytocin promotes personal empowerment and greater self-awareness. Attendees learned how this awareness is creating a new culture where women can rise above their reactive patterns to wellness and prosperity. Oxytocin levels felt in the body is evidence of those states. Attendees were told that the content taught and discussed at the chapter’s meetings supports the individual in her own way while collectively creating a positive ripple effect for greater world harmony. Travelling members can locate a chapter near their destination to visit from a growing number of BraveHeart Women Resonate chapters from around the world. At the Creston event, Marlene Nash and Tiesja Huscroft entertained with an inspiring rendition of Abba’s I Have a Dream. Refreshments were provided by Retro Café, and the evening concluded with a dinner catered by Dennis Munro, celebrating Creston and one of the first wave of BreavHeart Women chapters in the world.
