Ridge wants fair shake from ALC Pitt Meadows application for farm land being considered by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
Maple Ridge council doesn’t want to interfere with a Pitt Meadows plan to take farm land along Lougheed Highway out of the agricultural reserve. The only thing a few councillors want is a fair shake from the Agricultural Land Commission, as it reviews Pitt Meadows application to exclude 33 hectares north of the highway for a shopping mall, business park and road construction. Maple Ridge Coun. Cheryl Ashlie pointed out that Pitt Meadows is asking for the same thing the district was seeking in Albion flats, a concept that has essentially been denied. “It is something that should be watched closely, to see how they’re treated,” she said Monday of Pitt Meadows. see ALC, p4

Further charges have been laid against a Maple Ridge man accused of molesting children at his wife’s daycare. Latif Hamad Tata remains in custody on a detention order, and will not be released on bail until he is tried for the crimes. Ridge Meadows RCMP con-
firmed six new charges have been sworn against Tata that are related to another victim. The 37-year-old father of two now faces a total of 12 charges, including four counts each of sexual interference of a person under 16, invitation to sexual touching and sexual assault. Neil McKenzie with B.C.’s criminal justice branch said Tata was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Jan. 28. Tata will most likely stay behind bars until criminal proceedings are concluded.
McKenzie could not say why Tata was detained as the proceedings are protected by a publication ban, but explained that a person can be detained for three reasons under the Criminal Code. They include being a flight risk, a threat to public safety and whether the accused is likely to commit a criminal offence or interfere with the administration of justice, if released. RCMP continue to investigate the file and are still appealing for more witnesses or victims to come forward.
Tata’s wife ran Shining Stars Daycare on 122nd Avenue until the allegations against her husband surfaced. The business should not be confused with Shining Stars Montessori Daycare and Preschool in east Maple Ridge. Police allege the young victims were assaulted while at the Tata daycare, which was run out of the basement of the family home. Ministry elk strays from Upper Pitt Originally introduced in 2005 to repopulate area
were wiped out at the turn of the 20th Century by hunting. A small herd survived on Vancouver Island and has been used to repopulate other coastal areas. It was hoped that the herd would double in five years, which is it what seems to have happened. Maple Ridge couple may have stumbled upon a fourlegged visitor from the upper Pitt Valley. Loyd and Sandy Simpson were hiking in the Blaney Bog area last week when she spotted what looked like elk droppings. They saw them in a few locations, went out searching for a few days, then on Friday, Loyd spotted him. What he saw was a young bull Roosevelt elk with antlers in a secluded area, munching on the local vegetation. “I think this guy’s been there for a couple months,” Loyd said. It was a rainy day, not the best for photos, but Loyd managed to snap a few frames of the animal. While rain doesn’t make for great photos, it makes for quieter walking through the woods, he said. But Loyd didn’t have to worry about being so quiet, as the elk was making all kinds of noise, banging and crashing his way through the woods. “When I got close to him, he was pretty easy to follow.” Loyd said he’s lived in Maple Ridge for 30 years and it’s the first time he’s seen an elk. He was about 20 metres away and zoomed into 10X on his

Maple Ridge council wants more details and costs of a wildfire protection zone and how it will affect its residents before it goes any farther with the six-year-long project. The wildfire development permit area is based on Maple Ridge’s 2007 Community Wildfire Protection Plan and sets out guidelines to reduce the risk of forest fires burning into new suburbs. Some of those guidelines include a requirement for buffer spaces of 10 metres between yards and forests, the use of FireSmart landscaping in areas near forests and using fireresistant cement-based siding on the side of homes that face
the trees. The buffer space can be a combination of public and private property using setbacks, utility corridors, trails or cleared areas, tailored to each lot. Some councillors, though, worry about costs and the impact on developers. “It really concerned me that we have such little participation from this particular sector. We have a lot of developers and contractors working in Maple Ridge,” Coun. Michael Morden said Monday. “I’m really concerned about the meaningful input on this.” With new homes now fitted with sprinkler systems, Morden said people are now adequately protected. “I don’t have any concerns about the safety of our citizens.” He also wondered if such a zone was needed in fully serviced subdivisions with fire hydrants.
Fire chief Peter Grootendorst said fire hydrants are sufficient to fight one house fire, but not multiple homes ablaze. “The existing hydrant system isn’t able to supply enough water to protect that.” Grootendorst told council that the additional cost to a new home as a result of the guidelines has dropped to about $5,000. The option of installing two outdoor sprinklers combined with a fire-retardant wrap for a house facing the forest is permitted as an alternative to using cement-board siding on one side in place of vinyl. The only requirement for roofing materials is the banning untreated cedar shakes. “If we don’t do something like this, and we have a fire … the fire department will not be able to protect those structures if we continue to build the way we are. “We need to do something
to give the fire department a fighting chance,” Grootendorst said. A builder’s forum on the plan held in September drew only 10 people, while an open house in October drew 41 people. Another builder’s forum was held in November, where staff said builders supported the plan. Concerns about loss of space for homes in new subdivisions and land values were raised at the open house in October, but Grootendorst told council that land values won’t be affected . A staff report said the wildfire permit area wouldn’t affect density or the amount of space available for new homes. Councillors were also concerned about the extent of the wildfire development permit areas. Coun. Judy Dueck said the plan was good work, but wasn’t sure the project was ready, noting the wildfire per-
mit area includes Webster’s Corners and Whonnock, as well as Thornhill. “I think we really need to look at this map.” Morden added he originally thought the concern was about fires spreading from the urban area to the forests in north Maple Ridge. “Thornhill was never discussed, as I recall.” Grootendorst said the boundaries of the permit area that covers Thornhill were reviewed and found appropriate. He added later that B.A. Blackwell & Associates were hired to provide a scientific assessment of where the permit area should be in force. The wildfire development permit area, if approved, would apply only to new projects in Thornhill, Blue Mountain, Silver Valley and Fern Crescent. neighbours can band together to clean up their existing properties to reduce fire threats in their areas. Bruce Blackwell said later that the District of North Vancouver already has such regulations, while another dozen cities are creating their own wildfire development permit areas. He said last September’s fire that destroyed five homes in Silver Valley could have spread into the forest. “It’s not if this could occur, it’s more about when and where. We’ve seen enough weather conditions over the last 10 years to suggest we’re moving into more and more difficult conditions.” “We’re not reinventing the wheel,” Grootendorst said of the wildfire development permit area, adding that it follows North American standards. Maple Ridge man killed in bus crash by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter
A man from Maple Ridge has been identified as one of the people killed last week in a tour bus crash in Oregon. Seokmin Moon, 55, was one of nine people who died Dec. 30 after the bus crashed through guard rail on Interstate 84 and plunged 200 feet into a deep ravine at Deadman Pass. His wife, Choonja Moon, 53, is among 38 survivors and is being treated at the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Oregon police expect an ongoing investigation of the crash will take several weeks to complete. The driver of the bus was among the injured. “The Oregon State Police and State Medical Examiner’s Office thanks the Korean Consulate, Consulate of Canada and victims’ families for their continued help during the difficult process of identifying the victims and notifying next of kin,” said Lieutenant Gregg Hastings. “The consulates have also been very helpful in coordinating property identification and release to survivors and families of the deceased victims.” Owned by Vancouverbased Mi Joo Tour and Travel, the bus was returning to B.C. from Las Vegas when it crashed east of Pendleton, Oregon. In a recorded message, Mi Joo Travels said it is working with authorities investigating the accident and is taking steps to ease the suffering of those affected. Police have released the names of eight of the nine victims of the fatal crash. The name of the ninth victim is still withheld until police contact next of kin. The others: • Dale William Osborn, 57 from Spanaway,
Washington; • Oun Hong Jung, 67 and his wife Joong Wha Kim, 63 from Korea; • Yongho Lee, 75 from Lynwood, Washington; • Youmin Kim, 11, from South Korea, who was studying english in B.C.; • Chun Ho Bahn, 63, from Bothell, Washington; • Ae Ja Kim, 61, from Gangwon Province, Korea.

Lawsuit filed A U.S. law firm has filed a lawsuit on behalf of two Korean exchange students who were injured in the Oregon crash. The students - Chae Jong-Hyun and An Seong-Jun - spent eight hours in hospital following the crash and continued to be treated in a hotel for three days before they were transported back home to Tacoma. “I understand it will take several months for doctors to fully assess their injuries,” said attorney Charles Herrmann of the Herrmann Scholbe Law Firm, which has filed a suit on their behalf. The complaint alleges driver fatigue, failure to heed warnings, and speed too fast for conditions against tour bus owner Mi Joo Tour and Travel Ltd. The lawsuit alleges the driver of the tour bus, who also doubled as a tour guide, worked between 90 to 100 hours without relief over the first eight days of a package tour, violating U.S. regulations governing the maximum allowable time for a person to remain on duty and drive. On two days immediately preceding the accident, the driver worked over 27.5 hours, while driving more than 1,200 miles and conducting a tour of the Grand Canyon.

A fair shake Maple Ridge council wants the district to be treated the same as Pitt Meadows by the Agricultural Land Commission. The city has applied to exclude 33 hectares of farm land north of Lougheed Highway from the agricultural reserve for a shopping mall, business park and road construction. Maple Ridge previously sought comments from the commission to exclude property along the highway, west of 105th Avenue in Albion flats for the same purposes. The commission said it wouldn’t support that, mainly for environmental reasons, but would consider an application on the east side of 105th Avenue. In 2010, the commission also rejected an application to remove 60 ha in Maple Ridge for a business park on the former Pelton tree nursery, at 203rd Street and Golden Ears Way. That property is close to the land Pitt Meadows wants to remove. There are good reasons for Maple Ridge not to support the proposal by Pitt Meadows. A report by consultant G. P. Rollo and Associates suggests the Pitt Meadows project could delay demand for industrial land in Maple Ridge by up to 15 years. It could also cost Maple Ridge up to 750 jobs during the same period, not to mention tax revenue. Also, according to the latest Rollo report, Maple Ridge’s downtown would be hurt from a 10-per-cent reduction in demand for retail land, and a hotel and convention centre on the Pitt Meadows site could delay a similar project east of its border. Such fears could have been alleviated had Maple Ridge not dragged its feet on a plan for the Albion flats. The district might have been busy sprucing up the downtown area, but it sure moved quickly on the Pelton proposal. Did Maple Ridge, though, really expect its neighbours to sit idle, letting growth opportunities slip by? It would be nice if the two municipalities could work together, developing plans for the east and west that complement one another and benefit all area residents – a hotel, convention and shopping centre at one end, and a light industrial, commercial and recreational hub at the other. Having one land owner with a major stake in both locations would seemingly make such a suggestion amenable. Why not make a joint proposal to the land commission? What better way to ensure both get equal treatment. – The News

A real hero for aboriginal people VICTORIA – The century-old plight of Canada’s aboriginal people is back in the public eye, thanks to protests dubbed Idle No More. As with Occupy protests last year, the demands are vague. One of the claims, repeated in media B.C. Views coverage of proTom Fletcher tests, is that the federal government is moving to end the historic Indian Act restriction against selling reserve land. A look at the federal legislation, Bill C-45, shows this is not the case. Amendments ease restrictive provisions for leasing reserve land, which remains property of the Crown held in perpetuity for the aboriginal community. This change was initiated by B.C. aboriginal leaders so they can follow the trail blazed by one of the most entrepreneurial chiefs in Canadian history. His name is Ron Derrickson, and he served six terms as chief of the Westbank First Nation near Kelowna. One of my first big reporting assignments was covering a Royal Commission into his administration’s business affairs in the mid-1980s. There had been an astonishing 17 federal investigations before that, stemming from local claims that Derrickson was just too successful. He drove a big black Mercedes, wore expensive suits, and established a bunch of enterprises,
including Canada’s first water slide. The commission was chaired by John Hall, then known as the Crown prosecutor who put serial killer Clifford Olson away, and now an appeal court judge. Derrickson’s suit jacket had a conspicuous bulge as he took the stand each day. He was packing a semi-automatic pistol, having demanded and received a carry permit after a brutal attempt on his life. The hit man, an ex-cop, was hired by people who didn’t like the bottom-line way Derrickson ran Westbank’s leasehold mobile home parks. He showed up at Derrickson’s home one day and tried to beat him to death with a metal bar. Badly injured, Derrickson made it to his gun cabinet and shot his assailant, who survived to go to prison. Derrickson testified that his approach to the Indian Affairs bureaucracy was simple. He did business, and if they didn’t like it, they could tell him. Reserve land can’t be sold, so he leased it, offering people a low-cost way to enjoy the sunny Okanagan. His business plan was also simple. Drive to California and see what they’re doing. Drive back and do it in B.C. A 2007 profile of Derrickson by Greg Fjetland in Canadian Business magazine describes how he came by his approach to Ottawa. He grew up “dirt poor, living in a tar paper shack.” His family name was Tousawasket, until the local Indian Agent drew an Anglo name out of a hat. He and his brother were the first aboriginal kids to attend public school
in Kelowna. Racist bullying drove his parents to move him to a residential school in Washington State. He dropped out in Grade 9, toiled on farms, learned to weld, and worked his way into ranching, real estate and politics. He never gave up or backed down, ever. The Hall commission and all previous government probes concluded that he did nothing wrong. Derrickson sued his local accusers and won, and Ottawa

The News/letters ‘Beloved’ union structure Editor, The News: Re: Tired of B.C.’s taxpayer-funded propaganda (Letters, Jan. 2). I don’t like feel-good government advertising any more than letter-writer Jean Norris does, but she’s piling on the anti-Liberal rhetoric a little thick when she includes “the highest housing costs in Canada” in her list of taxes. Most housing in B.C. is privately held: our astronomical housing costs are largely explained by supply and demand. Similarly, the B.C. government is not “hiring workers from China for our mining and shipbuilding industries” because it doesn’t own mines or shipyards. A past premier may have once imagined he was a shipping magnate and – ignoring expert advice – built two hugely-expensive fast ferries that turned out to be ill-suited to their intended purpose, but he was a New Democrat set on building up Norris’ beloved “union structure” at any cost. Now that’s “poor fiscal management.” It’s a shame Jim Pattison didn’t offer Glen Clark a job before he became premier. Kirk Brown Maple Ridge
Steep property value drop Editor, The News: Re: Local property values stable (The News, Jan. 4). I wanted to let you know that, in Maple Ridge, some property values (and I’m imagining we are not alone) are down sharply. We live in a townhouse complex just off of Cottonwood Drive and Dewdney Trunk Road, and our assessed value dropped $23,000, or nine per cent. Worst year for wood smoke Editor, The News: Mayor and council, this year, for us, has been the absolute worst in the past four for wood smoke. It has reached such an epidemic in our area of downtown that we can only open our bedroom windows after midnight and must close them before 6 a.m. I am sure part of the reason is that the developer of the property immediately behind our townhouse complex cleared away the forest last autumn, thus eliminating the wind break the forest provided. I do not blame him as he must do his development and is not the root cause of the problem. I am astounded by how many of the homes in this area use wood as a full-time or supplementary heating source. While I assume they are only burning firewood, the disgusting and abusive odors that are emitted from some of the chimneys suggest that there is more than wood being burned. I know from previous experience that the district refuses to deal with the issue, claiming it is a regional responsibility. However, I can not understand how the district can promote the building of high density residential buildings in areas where the residents are going to be subjected to the well documented, negative health effects of residential wood smoke. Will the district contribute to the increased health care costs for all of these
people who suffer from conditions in the future? The district often dolls out money to attract potential developers to Maple Ridge, but does little or nothing to deal with existing problems such as wood smoke, and septic systems, which are dumping human waste in creeks that are supposed to be protected fish habitat. This is not a regional issue, but a District of Maple Ridge one, and, more importantly, a serious and easily avoidable health issue. Sure those with wood burning appliances will slough it off as ‘we were here first,’ but that is a simplistic and myopic approach. It seems that the district and region would be better off to encourage and even subsidize homeowners to switch to cleaner and more efficient fuel sources. The savings in health care costs will easily repay the investment. I wonder, as well, whether the developer was aware that he was going to be building an apartment complex with wood burning homes on three sides of the new building. Of course this feature will not appear in the marketing brochures, but I am sure the new owners will not be pleased to learn their shiny new apartment is siting on top of their neighbours chimney. It is time to really begin thinking more strategically to efficiently and effectively address some of the health and quality
of life issues facing our citizens and communities, making smart decisions today to avoid future costs. John Kelly Maple Ridge
Time has come Editor, The News: Last winter I was so sick with asthma from Christmas smoke in my neighbourhood that I ended up on six weeks of prednisone – never mind the eight inhalations of cortico-steriods a day. I started a neighbourhood education campaign, and so far there as been no fireplace smoke in my immediate neighbourhood. So far. A three-hour open fireplace burn is the equivalent of smoking 240 packs of cigarettes in your backyard during the same time period. Metro Vancouver has the mandate to regulate point source pollution, including wood smoke emissions. The time has come to do so. There are readily available technologies and strategies available to governments, the heating (and wood burn) industries, and to individual home owners which will significantly reduce wood smoke. A large storage building in northwest Maple Ridge was destroyed by fire early Monday. The blaze was called in around 1:40 a.m. by the homeowner, who discovered it in a building at the back of his house on 210th Street, just off 128th Avenue and Golden Ears Way. At the height of the fire, a tower of flames shooting above the tree line could be seen from several kilometres away. Tenant injured in apartment fire Burning pot put in a shopping cart by Monisha M ar t ins staff reporter
A tenant was injured after a pot on a stove caught fire Thursday evening in Maple Ridge, a mishap that triggered the evacuation of the entire apartment building. The fire started just after 4 p.m. in a second floor suite of Cypress Apartments at 11926 – 222nd Street. Fire chief Dane Spence said the building manager and other residents managed to extinguish most of the flames by the time firefighters arrived. The fire appears to have started on the stove. The pot of oil was dumped in a shopping cart, which was inside the suite, and the tenant tried to smother the fire. Instead of hosing down

Firefighters pushed the burning shopping cart off a balcony and hosed it down. the shopping cart and soaking the suite, firefighters knocked on the door of a suite across the hallway and threw the smoking cart over a balcony. The cart landed on a lawn, where it was hosed down.
Fire damage was contained to the second floor suite and did not spread. However, Spence added, tenants were lucky that the incident happened in the early evening and not when everyone was asleep.

Alzheimer’s campaign tackles stigma of dementia January is Alzheimer’s Awareness month in B.C.
I
f a close friend told you she has dementia, would you avoid her for fear of being embarrassed by what she might say or do? If you answered “yes,” you’re not alone. According to a recent poll by Alzheimer’s Disease International, 40 per cent of people with dementia reported they had been avoided or treated differently after diagnosis. It’s no surprise, then, that one in four respondents cited stigma as a reason to conceal their diagnosis, says Dorothy Leclair, the Maple Ridge and North Fraser support and education coordinator for the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. That’s why the society has chosen “See me, not my disease. Let’s talk about dementia” as the theme of the annual Alzheimer Awareness Month, which runs through January nationally. The goal is to address myths about the disease, shift attitudes and make it easier to talk about dementia, said Leclair. “Stereotypes and misinformation are what prevent people with dementia from getting the help

It is a progressive degenerative brain disorder
that affects each person differently. Sadly, it is fatal and there is no cure. “Although one in three Canadians know someone with dementia, it is not discussed as openly as other chronic illnesses, so the

prevalence is there, but the conversation isn’t yet, and that’s what we hope to address,” said Leclair. Today, 747,000 Canadians have dementia, 70,000 whom are British Columbians. While dementia can affect people as young as 40,
the risk doubles every five years after 65. The number of Canadians with dementia is expected to double to 1.4 million in the next 20 years, including more than 177,000 British Columbians. “By talking more openly about dementia, we can all help to increase awareness about the symptoms, encourage earlier diagnosis and provide support for families to have the confidence and skills for the journey ahead.” To help change the conversation, she said, area residents can do their part if they: • learn the facts about dementia – help to dispel inaccurate information to change society’s attitudes and opinions towards people with the disease; • stop making jokes about Alzheimer’s that trivialize the condition; • maintain relationships with people with dementia at home, in the community or at work, especially as the disease progresses. A good first step is to contact the Alzheimer’s Society of BC’s First Link™ Program, which can literally ‘link’ you with many helpful programs (604-298-0711). You can call the Dementia Helpline at 1-800-936-6033 (Tue-Fri, 10am-4pm), and also call Fraser Health to find out what services are available depending on your unique situation. There is also a program called The Ashby Memory Method™. It is an enjoyable, non-medical, workbook-based brain fitness program of memory exercises that are scientifically designed to improve brain functioning for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or stroke symptoms. It’s a twice a week fee-based program that may slow the development of symptoms of cognitive decline. This can translate into greater independence and a much better quality of life for the individual as well as a significant delay (several years in some cases) in the need to move to a memory care or long term care facility. When we recommend this program we don’t promise miracles or “silver bullets” - it works differently for each person. What we know for sure is that our clients enjoy and look forward to it because the program can help reduce levels of fear, depression and anxiety, and helps them feel better about themselves - we have witnessed it!

The NHL is coming back, and so is the pub business in Maple Ridge. Sports bars across B.C. have limped along on UFC fights, NFL games and other events, but there is nothing like a slate of Canucks games to fill their seats several nights a week. “Canucks is big business – especially in the restaurant and bar business,” said Josh Flett, owner of Fox’s Reach in Maple Ridge. He went out Sunday and bought a bale of Canucks jerseys. In the wee hours of that morning, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced that after a marathon bargaining session, the league and the players association had reached a tentative agreement. That ended both six months of bargaining and a lockout that cost the league at least 32 games off every team’s 82-game schedule. Observers say a second cancelled NHL season was narrowly averted. “I’m super stoked that they’re back,” said Flett. “It’ll be good for the community – good for business.” He has done his best to bring in fans, even bringing in Brother Jake from Rock 101 radio to host his Superbowl event. But having the Canucks back makes the job much easier. The Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association has pegged the amount of money the

Cheryl Sahota of Blueline Sports in Haney Place Mall was watching her Twitter feed on Saturday, so she knew the all-night bargaining session meant the negotiations had reached an inflection point. For her, Sunday morning’s announcement was not unexpected, but it was welcomed. “For us, it’s a huge relief,” she said. “It has been a really rough year.” She and her husband George have had the sports apparel and merchandise store in Haney Place Mall for 19 years. They have seen the passion for the Canucks reach its highest pitch ever in recent
years, and last year was the best ever for their business. With the highest-end jerseys selling for $210 apiece, with hats and t-shirts selling regularly, and with the addition of more attractive clothing for women, it was going to be another good year for the Canucks and their merchandise. “This year, with Schneider playing and everything, there was a lot of anticipation.” Sahota has seen that optimism turn to anger at the league and players. But she is optimistic fans will eventually come back to the rinks – at least on this side of the 49th parallel. “Canadian fans? Yes,” she said. “I can understand that fans are angry. “If we [the Canucks] get off to a good start, people will be back.”

A
n onstage exploration of death led to some significant behindthe-scenes beginnings for performers Kate Braidwood and Andrew Phoenix. The two met at California’s Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre and became much more than classmates when they teamed up to create the endof-life comedy Grim and Fischer. They began dating, got married and, in 2009, co-founded their own Portland-based theatre company called Wonderheads. Local theatregoers may recall Grim and Fischer from the 2011 Vancouver International Fringe Festival. Among other accolades, it won the Cultchivating the Fringe Award, allowing it to return for an encore run at The Cultch, Jan. 3 to 13. Performed without dialogue, and featuring Wonderheads’ signature fullfaced masks, the story centres on Mrs. Fischer, a feisty older woman holding white-knuckled onto life. “It’s quite literally a cat and mouse kind of cartoon chase between the character, Death, and this tenacious grandmother,”
says Braidwood, originally from Maple Ridge. Before joining forces on Grim and Fischer, Braidwood had watched her grandparents age and move into care homes, and Phoenix had recently dealt with death in his family. Those experiences resulted in wanting to examine what it means to lose the youthful “veil of invincibility” and face one’s own mortality. Wearing cartoon-like masks allowed them to explore a difficult, and sometimes scary Braidwood subject with humour and heart. Phoenix designed the set and is the actor beneath the oblong Grim Reaper mask, while Braidwood plays the stubborn Mrs. Fischer. She is also in charge of sound design and creates the oversized papier-mâché masks worn in all Wonderheads shows. (Their production history includes the live-action short Winston’s Last Puzzle and Loon, which toured last summer.) The headpieces are a more complex, colourful and expressive interpretation of traditional European larval masks. Braidwood says she usually incorporates two emotional states into every character’s face, which can then be angled to express different feelings. “For instance, I wanted Mrs. Fischer to

have sort of a side smile, a twinkle in her eye,” she says, “but I also wanted her to be vulnerable, so an aspect of worry or fear.” Without dialogue, the performers rely on physical acting to tell the story. And that can be challenging with an oversized mask to contend with. “There’s no peripheral vision, so we really have to be aware of what the other performer is doing, and we have to be aware of the edge of the stage so we don’t fall off,” Braidwood says. The universal themes of aging and death make Grim and Fischer accessible to a wide audience, Phoenix says. And the crowd should be prepared for both absurd humour and earnest heartbreak. “At one moment, I want them to be laughing at a fart joke, and the next moment, crying because of how touched they are,” Phoenix says. “We’re not stuck in one genre or the other. It’s not just the drama or the comedy, it’s definitely both.”

The arts council has promised to provide Lee with the dimensions of the art studio kiln so that prior to beginning his next project at the ACT he will be able to determine how “giant” a monster he can create.

Ethan Lee’s ceramic creations are steeped in fantasy. He likes firebreathing dragons, humongous dinosaurs and scary monsters. His tiny creations recently attracted a lot of attention at the ACT, where he was enrolled in a pottery and ceramics class. A novice when it comes to working with clay, the Grade 7 student breezed through the class projects and decided to challenge himself by creating figurines of his favourite subjects – dinosaurs, dragons and monsters. “He is a driven, dedicated and talented boy, but he did experience several heart-breaking failed attempts as he learned how to handle the clay,” says instructor Nicole Smith. “Eventually, through persistence and dedication to the image in his head, he created a few beautiful successful pieces, which should be celebrated as

Rustlers A2 win pee wee tourney in Chilliwack The Ridge Meadows Rustlers won the Chilliwack pee wee hockey jamboree over the holidays. In their first game, the Rustlers A2 team played the host Chilliwack A3, and rode a four-goal performance from game MVP Gavin Bruce to a 5-1 victory. Their second game was a 5-1 win over Merritt A1. The game MVP was standout defenceman Nik Pederson, and Jackson Chimiliar scored twice. The Ridge Rustlers crushed Portland A2 by a score of 9-0 in their third game. Justin Cloete scored a hat trick and Tanner Eaton scored his first goal of the season. In their fourth game against Chilliwack A4 they won 5-2, with Alexis Kahlert named the game MVP. Next up, they beat Chilliwack’s A3 team again, by a 6-4 margin. Jakob Mainhout was the MVP. They finished the tournament with a win over the Everett Silver-
tips, and Kahlert was the MVP. Trevor Schmidt had six goals and two assists for eight points in the tournament, and Scott Lyttle had seven points on a goal and six assists. Jake Gobilot and Mike Wynes worked well as linemates through the tournament, and combined for 10 points. Chris Beaubien and Chris Penner both battled hard despite having injuries, and Penner was rewarded with the winning goal in the tournament final. So far in league play, the team has gone a perfect 12-0, but has been heavily penalized, with 217 minutes in 12 games. This tournament could be a turning point, however, as the Rustlers showed great discipline, and was the last penalized team in the tournament, which helped them to win the gold medal. “We are becoming Team Tenacity,” said coach Ed Moulton. “Physical, tenacious and fast – that’s our motto.”

CHISHOLM, John On January 2, 2013 John passed away peacefully with his family by his side. He is remembered with love by his wife of 52 years Patricia, and his children Micheal, Merle & Marilyn. Also mourning his loss are his sisters, Josephine & Theresa, as well as his many grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family & friends. John was predeceased by his daughter Carolann, his sister Kathy and his parents Mina and Joseph. John was a devoted husband, father and friend. He was an honest, kind, loyal, and hardworking man with many talents. John loved to garden and enjoyed spending time with his best friend, Pat, traveling and playing Yahtzee. John’s family is grateful for the many wonderful caregivers who provided comfort and support. She was born in Maillardville, married and moved to Maple Ridge (Hammond) in 1946 where they raised their family and enjoyed their community. Yvette loved to garden and travel in her later years. Her final years were spent in Maple Ridge Senior Village where Yvette passed away peacefully in her 86th year on January 2, 2013. COVINGTON, Shirley Doreen December 5 1925 December 28 2012 Shirley Covington passed away Friday December 28th in Maple Ridge, BC. Born in Selkirk Manitoba December 5th 1925 to Wallace Percy & Violet Burns.
Predeceased by her parents, brother Harvey and husband Allen. Shirley is survived by sisters Beryl and Roberta (Bobbi), daughter Betty (Don), sons Brad (Carol), Blaine (Deb), and Brent (Deb), 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. Shirley was a fantastic mother and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at Holyrood Manor for taking great care of Mom and Dad in their final years. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, in lieu of flowers please make a donation to your favorite charity.

Jacquie Allan May 10th 1948December 18th 2012 Jacqueline Therese Allan, 64, of Maple Ridge passed away peacefully at the McKenney Creek Hospice on December 18th with family by her side. She leaves behind two loving sons, Wayne and Steve (Pascale) and her two precious grandchildren (the lights of her life) Tyler and Amanda. Missing her with happy memories are her brothers Daryl (Judy), Dale, Denny (Kathy) and sister Sharon (Mike), nephews Cory, Scott, Wayne and nieces Amy and Jennifer. Jacquie is pre-deceased by her sister Shirley( Wayne) and her mom and dad. Jacquie will be sorely missed by all of her friends including best friend Sue (Todd), favourite walking partner Bernice and many others. Jacquie worked in the insurance business in Maple Ridge for many years starting at Century 21 and, for the past 21 years, worked with “Ken and the gang” at Harris and Leib. She thoroughly enjoyed her work, both spending time with her clients and with all of her co-workers, who became her second family. Jacquie loved to cook for her family and walk with her “Bubba baby”. She especially looked forward to her summer vacation at Shushwap each year with her family. Jacquie did not have a chance to say good bye to many people as she had to leave work suddenly, in September, We would like to thank Dr. Wong for the loving compassion he showed to Jacquie. The wonderful nurses at McKenney Creek Hospice along with the numerous other doctors, specialists and nurses at the various hospitals in Jacquie’s very short fight with cancer. JENKINS ( Speed) Margaret Oct 11, 1919 - Jan. 2, 2013 Margaret passed away quietly on January 2, in Ridge Meadows Hospital. She will be sadly missed and loved by her husband of 73 years, Bob (Cub), her children Bob (Lea) Jenkins, Anne (Jack) Tossavainen, her grandchildren Helen (Chris) Gambling, Larry Jenkins, Ken (Sabrina) Jenkins, Teresa Kiss, Eric (Christine) Tossavainen, Karen (Chris) Hoskins, Nancy Tossavainen (Dan Pierce), and her greatgrandchildren Mark (Casey), Rhys (Karly), Lucas, Trevor, Austin, Jessica, Kaitlyn, Linden, Dylan, Braeden & Riley. Her brother in-law Doug and sister in -law Bunny and many nieces and nephews. Margaret was born in Coleman, Alberta and moved to Vancouver in 1944, and then residing in their Pitt Meadows home since 1989. She was a wonderful Mom and Grandmother and will remain in our hearts and always loved.
RICHARDS, Marie Dec. 1925 - Dec. 2012 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Mom and Gramma Marie Richards. Marie was born in North Sydney Nova Scotia and spent the early years of her life working in the Navy. This is where she met her husband Larry of 67 years. Following the war, they moved to the West Coast and started a family of four children. We were all so proud of mom as she crafted out her life from a very humble beginning. The courage, tenacity and love that she showed every waking minute played greatly into who we all became as people. Mom dedicated her entire life to her family and working together with Dad achieved many great things. She had a long and happy life and we know in the end she had achieved all she had hoped for and more. Marie is survived by her husband Larry, children Sharon (Bruce), Len (Linda), Jan (Tom) and Don (Paula). She was a wonderful Gramma to Brian, Michael, Craig, Jeff, Kaitie, Tommy, Olivia & Sean and a wonderful Great Gramma to Eric, Alex, Georgia, Owen and Brenden. Also survived by her niece Joni (Paul).
