Students learn pennies can bring peace The students at Beachcombers Community School have joined hands with tens of thousands of other schoolchildren around the world who are collecting Pennies for Peace to empower communities through education. The program benefits girls and boys in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Every morning, senior elementary students at Beachcombers Community School in Fanny Bay south of Courtenay begin the school day sitting in Community Circle. The first activity is dedicated to a reflective reading, which is discussed thereafter. These readings serve to broaden the students’ understanding of their place in the world delving into issues such as child poverty,

In a region where terrorist organizations recruit uneducated, illiterate children, that pencil can empower a child to read, write, and learn. B.C. births on rise Resolve to quit smoking The most popular names for babies born in British Columbia in 2011 were Liam and Emma, according to the annual report from the British Columbia Vital Statistics Agency. The most widely selected names for boys were Liam, Ethan, Mason, Lucas and Benjamin. The top five names for girls were Emma, Olivia, Sophia, Ava and Chloe. In 2011, there were a total of 43,991 births in B.C., up from 43,670 in 2010. “I am proud to call British Columbia home and so are more and more people,” said Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid. “The number of births in British Columbia is growing and British Columbians also enjoy the longest life expectancy in Canada, with life expectancy of 82 years old.” Life expectancy in British Columbia is the

highest in Canada at 82 years for 2007-11, up from 81.7 for 200610. The provincial population also grew naturally by 12,215 in 2011, or at rate of 2.7 per thousand, not counting migration. The report also states the total number of deaths in B.C. in 2011 was 31,776, up from 31,151 in 2010. The leading cause of death was cancer. The oldest person to die in British Columbia in 2011 lived to be 112. The number of HIV deaths continues to fall in B.C. In 2011, there were 59 HIV deaths, down from 253 in 1996. The 140th edition of the British Columbia Vital Statistics Agency Annual Report contains information collected from registrations of births, deaths and marriages that happened in 2011. Information

from the report is used for various aspects of health planning, research and education. BACKGROUND: On a typical day in B. C. in 2011: Births: * There were 121 births. * 62 males and 59 females were born. * Three babies were born to teenage mothers. * 28 babies were born to mothers aged 35 years old or more. Marriages: * There were 60 marriages. * One marriage every 10 days was a teen couple. Deaths: * 87 deaths occurred. * 45 males and 42 females died. * 25 deaths were due to cancer. * Three deaths were from pneumonia and influenza.

Smokers who want to make a New Year’s resolution to quit are reminded that help is available from B.C.’s Smoking Cessation Program. “Quitting smoking can be the best thing you can do for your health as it will reduce health risks like cancer, heart disease and asthma,” said Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid. “There are a range of supports in place through our Smoking Cessation Program, and accessing them can be as simple as calling 8-11.” Since the Smoking Cessation Program was launched on Sept. 30, 2011, 161,453 orders for nicotine replacement therapies have been placed through HealthLink BC. As well, over 45,000 people have obtained a prescription for a smoking cessation drug while visiting their physician for another reason. The program aims to help British Columbians stop smoking by assisting with the cost of smoking cessation aids. Once in each calendar year, B.C. residents enrolled with the Medical Services Plan can receive coverage for a single

continuous course, lasting up to 12 weeks, of either a prescribed smoking cessation drug through the PharmaCare program or a free supply of nicotine replacement gum or patches. While a prescription for a smoking cessation drug can be obtained simply by visiting a physician for another reason, the nicotine replacement therapies can be easily accessed by calling HealthLink BC at 8-1-1, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Smoking increases many health risks, including lung cancer, throat and oral cancer, heart disease, stroke and emphysema. For long-term smokers, it’s never a bad time to quit. By quitting smoking, British Columbians are taking active steps towards making the healthy choice, the easy choice for themselves and their families. Quitting smoking and reducing exposure to secondhand smoke greatly improves both quality of life and lifespan. “There has never been a better time to quit smoking, with QuitNow offering a variety of tools that greatly complement the Smoking Cessation Program and help British Columbians to quit,”

said BC Lung Association CEO Scott McDonald. “Choose to make a positive impact on your health this holiday season. Cancer prevention depends on healthy living and healthy public policies,” said Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon, CEO Barbara Kaminsky. “I applaud British Columbians who have taken the important next step and chosen the Smoking Cessation Program.” British Columbians who register with the Smoking Cessation Program are able to receive further web, text and telephone support from QuitNow Services (‘QuitNow’), which is operated by the BC Lung Association. HealthLink BC staff can also transfer callers directly to QuitNow. While B.C. has the lowest smoking rate in Canada at 14.3 per cent, there are still approximately 550,000 British Columbians who smoke. An estimated 70 per cent of smokers in B.C. want to quit. Fending off aquatic invasive species Fishing The B.C. government has amended the controlled alien species regulation to protect our environment, with tough fines for those who introduce invasive species into local ecosystems. The B.C. government has strengthened the regulation, acting on a previous commitment to ban the snakehead fish. All public comments received on the government’s policy paper supported strong action on this issue. “The strengthened regulation reaffirms our government’s commitment to protect B.C.’s natural ecosystems from exposure to unnecessary risk as a result of the release of invasive non-native species,” says Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. Main measures include: ■ Prohibiting the possession,

WOOD STOVES 1X2 & 1X2 INSERTS

breeding, release or transportation of highrisk aquatic species such as the snakehead. Releasing a live snakehead into local waters could result in a fine of up to $250,000. ■ Requiring that no invasive zebra or quagga mussel, alive or dead, be present on boats or related equipment. Failure to clean mussels off boats or equipment could result in a fine of up to $100,000. Until now, the controlled alien species regulation has been used to control the possession, breeding, shipping and releasing of animals that are not native to B.C., such as tigers, that pose a serious risk to the health or safety of people. For example, currently it is a direct violation of the regulation under the Wildlife Act to possess a prohibited species without a permit. Given the threats to B.C.’s fish, wildlife and habitat, the new rules target specific aquatic invasive species to prevent

these live species from coming into contact with our waters. Many neighbouring Canadian and U.S. jurisdictions have similar restrictions on aquatic invasive species as those announced today. “The impact of the snakehead and zebra mussel in other jurisdictions has been devastating to those local ecosystems. These regulations are an important step in preventing these invasive species gaining a foothold in B.C.,” says Terry Lake, Minister of Environment. Other new measures include: ■ Adding definitions for “accredited zoo or aquarium,” “certified educational institution” and “certified research institution” to create clarity on standards, and allow exemptions to apply for strict educational or scientific purposes. ■ Clarifying which species of monitor lizard are prohibited,

typically those that grow over two metres in length or that otherwise create a significant threat to public safety. ecosystems. ■ The fish is torpedo-shaped, light brown in colour with dark brown patches, and a large mouth filled with sharp teeth. It can grow up to 1.2 metres in length and weigh up to 6.8 kilograms. ■ The snakehead can survive out of water in moist environments for up to seven days and is capable of travelling short distances overland. ■ While not yet established in B.C., the fish is an ongoing ecological concern in a number of northeast U.S. states, as well as in Arkansas. ■ In May 2012, a snakehead fish was spotted in Central Park lagoon in Burnaby. As a result, staff from both the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations launched an extensive search, and following a partial drainage of the lagoon, the snakehead was successfully captured and removed.

2X14 2X14 Corner with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com The weather has been very decent in the New Year and the locals that are getting out are fishing for winter springs. Some nice Campbell River fish around 14 pounds have been caught. At this time of year lots of fish hooked are undersize. You can keep fish 62 cm or longer. Anglers are fishing the ebb tide from the red marker buoy to the Cape Mudge Lighthouse. Fish are quite deep and using spoons and hoochies might get the big one. Prawning has been quite good off Francisco Point at the bottom end of Quadra Island. At this time of the year a number of boats have been spotted near the kelp and my first thought was they were p setting up prawn traps. Divers are getting g sea urchins for the J Japanese market t time of year. this If you walk the nature trail from S Salmon Point to t the th Oyster O River a number of boats and divers gathering the urchins. This year I met a group of fishermen from Italy who fish this area. Tiziano Rizzotto first came to Campbell River in 1986 and recalled that Bob MacKenzie was working at the small fishing store. There was no bridge or spawning channel and steelhead were plenty. The Quinsam River has been fishing well for cutties using silver bodied flies. This area can produce some nice catches of steelhead. I managed to obtain a good supply of burlap for fly tieing and the ever popular Fisher Shrimp is easy to tie and even more fun when it catches fish. If you would like a sample of this fly please feel free to contact me here at the Fishing Corner.

Perimeter Institute takes a ‘Paige’ out of Luke Santi’s book Paige Murphy from Campbell River is this year’s recipient of the Luke Santi Memorial Award for Student Achievement, presented by Perimeter Institute. Murphy hails from Carihi Secondary School, and she is in her first year studying science at the University of Victoria. The Luke Santi Memorial Award is presented annually to a Canadian student who demonstrates high academic performance, interest in science, extra-curricular involvement, and volunteering. Murphy has an incredible roster of achievements worth celebrating. The award honours Luke Santi, a student at Resurrection High School in Kitchener, Ontario who volunteered with the Institute’s Outreach

department and attended Perimeter’s International Summer School for Young Physicists (ISSYP) in 2007. Later that year, he passed away at the age of 16 from brain cancer. The award is presented annually to a Canadian student who demonstrates Santi’s many qualities – academic performance, interest in science, extra-curricular activities and volunteering – and has begun post-secondary education in a physical sciences program at a Canadian university. Murphy is now in her first year studying science at the University of Victoria. Among Murphy’s many academic achievements, she received the BC Science Counsel Award, given to the top grade 12

Gazette Hamper Fund gets big response Black Press A North Island tradition wrapped up its 33rd year this Christmas season, as the North Island Gazette Hamper Fund

supplied food parcels and toys to local families in need. And, as the final tallies are being counted, it is becoming clear that this year’s drive was one the

Fund’s most successful years ever. The tradition is driven each year by seemingly indefatigable volunteers, with food drives, fundraisers and special events

Gazette Hamper Fund board member John Tidbury sorts food items during packing of the Christmas hampers at Thunderbird Mall in Port Hardy in December. Photo by J.R. Rardon and individual contributors, locals smashed the $30,000 target, collecting $42,481 at the last count. Just before Christmas, a veritable army of volunteers came together to assemble and deliver

the hampers across the North Island. In all, 580 families received a hamper of food, with toys for children, pet food, and infant food for those with little ones or furry companions. Give yourselves a pat on the back, North

Island. You’ve helped make what can be a difficult time of year for many that much easier. And you’ve set a solid foundation for next year’s Hamper Fund while setting the bar high for the next fundraising efforts.

This year, the fundraising goal was set at $30,000 and the challenge was laid out to the public in October through the North Island Gazette. And boy, did it respond.
