Compost plant meeting date set By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star
A three-hour public information meeting will be held on a proposed composting facility east of Fort Langley. The company that wants to build the plant, Glenval Organics Ltd., has booked the event for Wednesday, Jan. 16 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Thompson Room at the Fort Langley Golf Course at 9782 McKinnon Cres. The meeting is not a formal public hearing, only an information session, according to Ray Robb, the Metro air quality district director who has the authority to issue an air quality permit for the plant. The Glenval Organics Ltd. application to locate the plant on a 12.32 hectare property 25330 88 Ave. has drawn complaints from area residents and at least one member of Langley Township council, who say there hasn’t been enough public consultation. Langley Township Councillor Charlie Fox said the proposal will make Langley the “dumping site” for all the green waste from all the other municipalities in Metro Vancouver. Fox said the whole area is a flood plain and sensitive peat bog. Fox was not satisfied with the operator’s promise to restrict the type of waste to limit odours, saying that could change down the road. Glenval promises the facility will not smell bad because it will only use yard waste but nearby residents like Katherine Kinman, who is renovating a nearby farm house, are not reassured. She is concerned the plant will drive down property values and says she and her neighbours are “outraged” and intend to fight the planned development. Glenval Organics spokesperson Scott Temreck describes the site as a “former fill and gravel pit” that is properly zoned for composting. Temreck said the company intends to become the first yard waste compost facility in the Metro Vancouver region to receive an air quality permit and promised the plant will “meet or exceed all environmental regulations that apply to the composting industry.” He predicted traffic will be “minimally increased” along 88 Avenue, adding a maximum of 16 trucks a day to the 2,500 to 5,000 vehicles that travel the route every day.

In response to nine vehiclerelated fatalities in the community last year, the Abbotsford Police Department has launched a roadsafety campaign. The campaign began Monday with the release of a poster titled “What shape are you in while driving?” The poster depicts the “circle of awareness,” where safe driving occurs, and the “square of oblivi-
on,” where it does not. “Exercise your road sense. Stay alert. Slow down. Think safe,” the poster states. Const. Ian MacDonald points out that the circle relates to things going on outside a vehicle – such as stop signs and school zones – while the square references activities that people do while driving, such as eating and applying makeup. He said the idea is to remind drivers that “there’s a world going
on outside of your window.” The nine traffic fatalities in Abbotsford last year were up from 2011, when there were four. MacDonald said more posters will be released throughout the year, and there will also be videos. As well, police will step up traffic enforcement. “We need to do some work here, and the community needs to do some work too,” MacDonald said.

Three recipients applaud gun-toting-Santa card By VIKKI HOPES Aldergrove Star
Three recipients of the Christmas cards sent to gangsters by the Abbotsford Police Department have responded to say the initiative was a good idea. Const. Ian MacDonald said the APD did not receive any negative comments from the 70 recipients. “Operation Resolution” involved cards being sent to prolific offenders, property offenders and people known for drug and gang activity in Abbotsford. The front of the card featured Police Chief Bob Rich dressed in a Santa costume, decked out in tactical gear and carrying an assault rifle. The inside encouraged the recipient to “choose a new and better life” in 2013. A phone number was provided that would lead callers to a recorded greeting, encouraging them to leave their contact information so that someone from the APD could follow up with them. MacDonald said the three respondents included one man who sent a
card back to the department with this message: “Thank you for the card. Best wishes to all of you and have a happy new year.” Another person had a phone conversation to say he had a criminal and drug past and wanted to thank the APD for sending out the card. The third response was an email from a wife of one of the card recipients. She said she and her husband applauded the department for its innovative idea, and her husband wished that he had someone in his life years ago who would have encouraged him to make better choices. MacDonald said the response from the public was also mainly favorable, with about 85 per cent voicing positive comments. The two main criticisms were the depiction of Santa toting a gun and the cost to taxpayers. MacDonald said the department knew the image might grab some attention, which was the whole idea. “The image was always intended for adult respondents. We weren’t doing the cover of a children’s book.” He said the total cost was $325.

Accused man in Langley murder appears in court By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star
A man found dead in a Langley Township house on Monday morning and the man charged with his murder were friends, a police spokesperson said Wednesday. The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Cloverdale resident Cole Adam Manning. The suspect, 24-year-old Jason Terrence Brewer, has been charged with second degree murder. He is said to be known to police. The accused made a brief appearance before a Surrey Provincial Court judge Wednesday afternoon and was ordered held in custody until Jan. 16. Brewer, an athletic-looking, cleanshaven man with short dark hair, was wearing a white long-sleeved dress shirt rather than the usual red prison garb when he was brought into court by a Sheriffs’ officer. He appeared to smile and wave in the direction of a young woman sit-
ting by herself in the public seating area of the courtroom near the back. The woman, who appeared upset and agitated, walked out of the chamber immediately once Brewer was escorted back into custody, roughly five minutes after he entered. A small group of people sitting together also left the courtroom after Brewer was ordered held in custody. One of them, a woman, appeared to be in tears. “The victim and suspect are believed to be friends,” said Sgt. Jennifer Pound, speaking for the regional Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). The motive for the murder is still under investigation, Pound added, but police have ruled out gang involvement. Langley RCMP were called about a body in a basement of a house in the 19800 block of 69 Avenue around 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 31. Police said a suspect was quickly

A man was arrested on 264 Street near 48 Avenue in Aldergrove less than two hours later by police from Abbotsford and RCMP from Langley.
There was what IHIT Insp. Amrik Virk called a “short” pursuit that ended with police vehicles forcing the suspect’s vehicle off the road. At least one cruiser, an RCMP vehicle, was damaged, Virk said.
Virk said police would like to thank members of the general public who offered to use their personal airplanes to assist with locating the suspect. “We called the Langley airport and we asked for any aircraft or helicopters that were in the air that could assist us,” Virk told reporters. “We had a number of calls from owners of private aircraft ready to take off and ready to assist us and we had a helicopter that was doing some surveying work very close to the area that assisted, that did spot the incident unfolding.” “(We had) people waiting actually at the airport with their own fuel, their own aircraft saying ‘we’re ready to take off, what do you want us to do?’” The house where the body was discovered is located in a newer neighbourhood of recently-built homes. A Langley Township task force has been meeting with different groups involved in the debate over blueberry cannons to prepare for a January public meeting on the issue. The propane-fired cannons are used by blueberry farmers to scare off birds that might otherwise munch their crops. The cannons can be fired from 7 a.m. to noon, and from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. during the summer. The noise has drawn complains from homeowners who say the loud bangs are annoying and from horse owners who say the sound spooks their animals.

It also plans to hear from an expert on starlings, the berry-munching birds the cannons are aimed at. ‘Horsing Around’ at the mall

You may have noticed them grazing inside Opus Framing and Art Supplies or standing near the cash registers at Shoppers Drug Mart in Brookswood. Now the life-sized horse statues are galloping into Willowbrook Mall. From Jan. 14 to Feb. 3 the Langley Arts Council’s Horsing Around Langley Exhibit will be set up along the “Horseshoe Trail” at Willowbrook Shopping Centre. The exhibit features eight life-sized horse sculptures that have been transformed from plain white structures into colourful works of art. It is all part of a yearlong public art initiative to raise awareness and funds for the arts in Langley. “What’s neat about all of them is that every single one of them is unique,” said LAC president Rosemary Wallace, who co-painted a colt with Lalita Hamill for the project. “When we first got them they were just white horses, but now that they’re painted, they are

By blending the agricultural, arts and cultural communities of Langley, the project is meant to reflect Langley’s heritage and its role as the Horse Capital of B.C. Each horse requires a sponsorship of $10,000 to complete, and the Langley Arts Council is
still seeking sponsors, Wallace added. A few of the horses have only been partly funded so far. “For the other artists it was a challenge for them because it wasn’t painting on a canvas, so the curves of the horse had to lend itself to the painting,” Wallace said. “I think they were frustrated
at the beginning, but they were excited with the end result.” While the exhibit is at Willowbrook, there are also several equine activities shoppers can participate in. As part of the Horsing Around contest, shoppers can enter to win a $1,000 Horsing Around Langley activity package which includes horse riding lessons, dining, entertainment and shopping. On Jan. 19, the mall is hosting a Horsing Around Kid’s Party from 1 to 4 p.m. for kids ages 3 to 13. It is a free party with horse games, crafts, activities and entertainment. Appeal dismissed on drug conviction Aldergrove Star
An appeal has been dismissed for an Abbotsford man who was convicted last year of trying to smuggle 50 kg of cocaine from the U.S. into Canada. Ajitpal Singh Sekhon, 36, was convicted of possession for the purpose of trafficking and importing a controlled substance, and was sen-
tenced to a 10-year jail term. In a ruling on Dec. 19, a B.C. Court of Appeal panel denied him another trial. Sekhon was the lone driver of a pickup truck that arrived at the Aldergrove border crossing on Jan. 25, 2005. A customs officer noted that Sekhon appeared tense and nervous, and a search of his vehicle
was conducted. Fifty bricks of cocaine were found in a hidden compartment of the truck, but Sekhon denied having any knowledge of the drugs. Sekhon was acquitted following his first trial in 2007, but the Crown appealed the ruling, and a new trial was ordered. Sekhon was then convicted in November 2011.
Police looking for wanted man in home B&E Aldergrove Star
Langley RCMP have put out an arrest warrant for 18-year-old Charles Ball, wanted in connection to a July home break-in. It is alleged Ball broke into a home in the 20700-block of Douglas Crescent on July 20, taking an iPad2, a Dewalt
palm sander and a women’s mountain bike. Langley RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Holly Marks said Ball was identified as a possible suspect after a thorough investigation. Attempts to locate Ball have not been successful and police are now seeking the

The bus was full. Not long afterwards, the onboard bus security video recorded Fayant lunging at the driver and grabbing him around the throat. The driver suffered a small nick to his neck, likely from a fingernail. Fayant fled the scene. He later told a psychiatrist that he tried to choke the driver because he didn’t like the way the man was driving the bus. On Feb. 21, Fayant stabbed a 41-year-old man in the back after both men got off a Coast Mountain bus near Aldergrove Centre Mall. The injured man suffered a lacerated kidney and was unable to work for three months. Fayant told the psychiatrist he believed two men sitting near him on the bus were laughing at him and were somehow connected to an 2010 incident where he was abducted and beaten over a drug debt. In fact the victim had just moved to B.C. from Ontario and was talking with his brother. Neither knew Fayant. The psychiatric assessment rated Fayant as a high to high-tomoderate risk for violent behavior.
Survivor gives cancer care $100,000 upgrade Aldergrove Star
Home-grown philanthropist Dave Holmberg made a $100,000 gift to the BC Cancer Foundation in support of cutting-edge radiation therapy equipment at the BC Cancer Agency Abbotsford Centre. Cancer has deeply impacted the Holmberg family. A year-and-a-half after losing his eldest son, David Jr., to brain cancer, Holmberg received a diagnosis of multiple myeloma—a cancer of the plasma cells. After 27 rounds of radiation therapy from BC Cancer Agency specialists, whom Holmberg describes as highly skilled and compassionate, he has now completed his treatment. Having been a community leader in the agricultural equipment business for 45 years, Holmberg said, “I know how important it is
to have the best equipment,” which motivated him to make a gift that will advance life-saving radiation therapy in Abbotsford. He also recognizes the worldleading advancements in cancer knowledge and care happening in B.C. and believes in the value of research. A clinical trial gave David Jr. 17 months of added time with his family until he passed away at age 48. “I have no doubt that the clinical trial treatments gave David extra time,” said Holmberg, adding, “Anything we can do as a public to help move research forward is truly important.” Over 1,000 patients are treated with radiation therapy at the Abbotsford Centre each year. “Radiation therapy is a critical component in cancer care, which is ever-advancing,” said Dr. Nisar

In front of a large contingent of bus drivers along with his parents, Steven Fayant was sentenced to 22 months in jail and three years probation in a Surrey courtroom on Tuesday. He was given the jail sentence for stabbing an innocent man who was getting off a transit bus in Aldergrove last February. Fayant was also sentenced to time served plus a day in jail for choking a bus driver a few days earlier in Surrey. He was given three years probation and numerous strict conditions after his release, including a ban on riding public transit. Last year, the 20-year-old crack cocaine addict pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and assault. The Crown was asking for three years in jail and his defense lawyer asked for 14 months. Judge Paul Dohm sentenced Fayant to 33 months but brought it down to 22 months for time served. “This sends a message to the accused that random attacks on unsuspecting individuals will not be tolerated,” said Dohm. The gaunt looking Fayant said nothing in the court where the bus driver he choked was present. Upon Fayant’s release from jail he isn’t to have any contact with his victims and is not allowed to be in
Langley City or in Aldergrove. The judge said that if Fayant refuses to take prescribed medication he will be forced to report to his probation officer daily. In his judgement, Dohm told of Fayant, who grew up in a dysfunctional family setting but became “unmanageable” by age 13. His dad kicked him out by 13 when he was already using drugs and alcohol. He went from foster care homes to couch surfing and living on the streets. He quit school before 16 and has no vocational skills. The psychologist who assessed him said he has little interest in getting therapy and it’s unlikely he would benefit from counselling. He has been to five recovery houses and kicked out for not living by house rules. The bus driver Fayant choked suffered emotionally and feared going back to work. Outside the courtroom, Coast Mountain bus driver union representative Gavin Davies said the sentence was a “step in the right direction.” “It’s good the courts are taking these cases seriously,” said Davies. Davies said bus drivers don’t want to put up shields to protect them. “The best way to deal with this is stiffer penalties,” Davies said. “So the next time a rider is upset a bus is late, they will think twice about

Editor: I am totally amazed and disgusted by the dog owners who do not pick up after their animals. I walk my dog at least once a day from my home up to and around the athletic field and see great piles of excrement just left waiting for some unsuspecting person (usually a child) to step in. I have even seen it in the children’s play area! I also notice the excrement seems to be that of larger dogs like those of the two ladies (one driving a red pick-up) who just ignored it as their dogs did their thing then they just walked away. If you do not want to pick up after a large dog then maybe get a smaller one or better yet no dog at all. It doesn’t matter that your pet defecates off the path - clean it up. People walk off the paths especially children. Most pet owners are responsible citizens who follow common sense and do not leave excrement behind. It is the minority who will cause us all to lose the privilege of walking our dogs in the area. Thanks to those responsible pet owners who do clean up. VICTORIA – The centuryold plight of Canada’s aboriginal people is back in the public eye, thanks to protests dubbed Idle No More. As with Occupy protests last year, the demands are vague. One of the claims, repeated in media coverage of protests, is that the federal government is moving to end the historic Indian Act restriction against selling reserve land. A look at the federal legislation, Bill C-45, shows this is not the case. Amendments ease restrictive provisions for leasing reserve land, which remains property of the Crown held in perpetuity for the aboriginal community. This change was initiated by B.C. aboriginal leaders so they can follow the trail blazed by one of the most entrepreneurial chiefs in Canadian history. His name is Ron Derrickson, and he served six terms as chief of the Westbank First Nation near Kelowna. One of my first big reporting assignments was covering a Royal Commission into his administration’s business affairs in the mid-1980s. There had been an astonishing 17 federal investigations before that, stemming from local claims that Derrickson was just too successful. He drove a big black Mercedes, wore expensive

suits, and established a bunch of enterprises, including Canada’s first water slide. The commission was chaired by John Hall, then known as the Crown prosecutor who put serial killer Clifford Olson away, and now an appeal court judge. Derrickson’s suit jacket had a conspicuous bulge as he took the stand each day. He was packing a semi-automatic pistol, having demanded and received a carry permit after a brutal attempt on his life. The hit man, an ex-cop, was hired by people who didn’t like the bottom-line way Derrickson ran Westbank’s lease-hold mobile home parks. He showed up at Derrickson’s home one day and tried to beat him to death with a metal bar. Badly injured, Derrickson made it to his gun cabinet and shot his assailant, who survived to go to prison. Derrickson testified that his approach to the Indian Affairs bureaucracy was simple. He did business, and if they didn’t like it, they could tell him. Reserve land can’t be sold, so he leased it, offering people a low-cost way to enjoy the sunny Okanagan. His business plan was also simple. Drive to California and see what they’re doing. Drive back and do it in B.C. A 2007 profile of Derrickson by Greg Fjetland in Canadian Business magazine describes how he came
by his approach to Ottawa. He grew up “dirt poor, living in a tar paper shack.” His family name was Tousawasket, until the local Indian Agent drew an Anglo name out of a hat. He and his brother were the first aboriginal kids to attend public school in Kelowna. Racist bullying drove his parents to move him to a residential school in Washington State. He dropped out in Grade 9, toiled on farms, learned to weld, and worked his way into ranching, real estate and politics. He never gave up or backed down, ever. The Hall commission and all previous government probes concluded that he did nothing wrong. Derrickson sued his local accusers and won, and Ottawa began to change its racist, paternalistic ways. Which brings us back to today. Derrickson’s pioneering work is still changing the Indian Act for the better. This effort is under dishonest attack from people whose legacy is mainly incompetence and failure. Protesters demand more unearned public subsidy, and a petulant soup-only strike is celebrated as an act of bravery. Choose your own hero. I’ve chosen mine. Editor: Re: Glenval Organics Composting Facility Notice for Glen Valley in Langley, B.C. I am writing as a five term elected member of Langley Township Council and a 27 year resident of Langley Township to express my deep concern about the proposed Glenval Organics Composting Facility, and the Metro Vancouver application process used for relevant permits pertaining to this proposed composting facility. In my opinion, there has been a completely inadequate information and communication process around this proposed facility. No information or formal notification has been given to Langley Township Council by either the proponent or by Metro Vancouver, nor has any council decision been taken on it. No public meeting or public open house has been held on the proposed facility by either the proponent or Metro Vancouver. The public has not been sufficiently informed about this proposed facility nor has there been a robust and complete public information package, including an environmental impact assessment study made available to all interested and concerned members of the community. The facility is proposed to be located in Glen Valley next to an environmentally sensitive piece of old growth land that Langley Township Council just recently decided not to sell due to environmental and historical First Nations value, and at the request of many area residents. There are other areas in the Township which I think are far better suited to such a composting facility, particularly the current Metro Vancouver Waste Transfer station on 272 Street in south Aldergrove. Was this option even considered? I do not support this application for a variety of reasons, including the lack of environmental impact/assessment studies, the lack of Council and full public consultation, and the lack of complete and transparent public information on the proposed facility. Abbotsford can’t afford this
Editor: I am appalled at the idea that Abbotsford is proposing to fund the proposed YMCA. The deal is horrible. Have we learned nothing from the deal with the Abbotsford Heat? The taxpayers will be paying half the up front costs, but receiving no income for 40 years. We already have several private fitness centres (Apollo, Valley Racquet club, and the fitness centre on Gladwin Road etc.) plus the MAC and the fitness centre at Old Yale, which we already fund. We fund walking trails. It seems strange to me that the city could not find $1 million to repair the swimming pool in Matsqui village, but can find $17.5 million plus half the development costs for a yuppie fitness centre. I agree that the YMCA is a worthy organisation, but I totally disagree that the city should borrow money to support what is essentially a commercial venture. We would have no security, and no return on the money for 40 years, so as well as the money up front we will be paying the interest on the money borrowed. It seems that the city has difficulty sorting out our wants as opposed to our needs. The YMCA is definitely a want, that we cannot afford. Yvonne Holden, Abbotsford

Sultan shares ‘life’ with seniors By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star
At 79, Ralph Sultan is still living in the North Shore home he used to share with his late wife Shirley, who passed away suddenly in 1999. A woman comes in once a month to help with the cleaning, but Sultan says he knows there will come a time when he will have to downsize and leave more than 40 years of memories behind. “At some time I’ve got to face up to leaving,” Sultan, the recently-appointed Minister of State for Seniors, told an audience of about 30 people at the Langley Seniors Centre last month. The former Harvard professor, father of four and grandfather of four, was making a point about his own understanding of seniors’ issues. He went on to describe how his increasingly frail sister Doris recently had to be transferred from her four-bedroom home with its sunken living room to a less physically challenging special care facility. And he joked about his own occasional absent-mindedness as he nears his 80th birthday.

the lives of seniors in British Columbia. He talked about the “better at home” policy that provides athome support for seniors. “The government strategy is to keep them at home as long as possible,” Sultan said. While some seniors like himself are able to consider downsizing to something like a town-
house at some point, that option isn’t available to all, Sultan noted. “Housing of that sort is in very short supply and often very expensive,” Sultan said. He defended the Liberal record on seniors’ issues, saying the government has created six times as many beds for seniors who require institutional care than the previous government. The minister of state referred to plans to create a B.C. seniors’ advocate without giving many details other than saying the office would be created early in the new years. And he promised he would function as an advocate himself. “I intend to do my best to push these issues forward,” Sultan said. Since his September 5 appointment to cabinet, Sultan has been talking about seniors issues at public appearances throughout the province. Earlier this month, Sultan and Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett visited seniors’ facilities in the Elk Valley, attending the Fernie Seniors’ Centre, Sparwood’s Lilac Terrace and Elkford Community Centre. — with files from Black Press

Access to contact information, schedules, and information about the Township of Langley’s programs and services is well in hand, thanks to a new version of tol.ca that was created specifically for mobile devices. “Given the growth we’ve seen in the use of hand-held devices, a mobilefriendly version of the website was definitely needed,” said Steve Scheepmaker, the Township’s manager of information technology. “When tol.ca is accessed by devices such as Smart Phones, the website will now automatically be displayed in a more convenient, accessible format that is easier to read and navigate.” During the month of December, 2012, there were 47,048 unique visits to the Township website. Of those, nearly 28 per cent came from visitors using a
mobile device. Since December of 2011, there has been a 200 per cent increase in traffic from hand-held devices. Content shown on the mobile version of tol.ca is a subset of the content from the main site, and is based on information accessed by mobile devices over the past year. At any time, mobile users can switch over to the full Township website by clicking on a link at the bottom of the page. In addition to the new layout, existing tools - such as the Report a Problem form - use GPS coordinates obtained from visitors’ phone to help Township staff better locate problems submitted by the public. Lifestyle change helps rediscover passion By GARY AHUJA Aldergrove Star
New Year’s is a time many people make resolutions in an effort to better their lives. But for Jeffrey HansenCarlson, it wasn’t a New Years resolution which turned his life around. Like most kids growing up, Hansen-Carlson loved riding his bike. The son of an RCMP officer, he says his mom used to have to call the local detachment because he would be gone all day long. Hansen-Carlson gained weight through his teenage years and his 20s. And then a few years back, not having ridden a bike in years, he decided to purchase one and went for a spin. Unfortunately, he did not find the experience as enjoyable as he remembered. “It was the worse experience of my life; it was so uncomfortable,” he described. “I was so out of shape. “I hated every pedal stroke. “I went on that one bike ride and then sold the bike.” “I knew I was a fat guy but I never really had the desire to change,” he added. He described the next six months as a dark time, and he turned to fast food to cope with his frustrations. “I just ate and ate and ate,” he said. “For six months, I lost control.
“I realized I had let myself go for way too many years. I didn’t know what to do. “As far as self esteem goes, this was an all-time low for me.” He resigned himself to be obese. A few months later (August 2008) on his wedding day, Hansen-Carlson struggled getting into his tuxedo. “I was embarrassed,” he admitted. But he realized something: the problem was not exercise, it was his diet. Hansen-Carlson spent the next 12 months trying to make the necessary changes in his life, but was unsuccessful. So one year later, HansenCarlson went to see a nutritionist. For the next 18 months, he ate only what he was supposed to. “I was entirely committed to learning the nuances of a perfect diet,” he explained. “I didn’t sway, I didn’t have a mint, I didn’t have anything that wasn’t explicitly allowed.” This change in diet allowed Hansen-Carlson to drop 120 pounds. The 30-year-old now weighs 180 pounds, a weight he hasn’t been at since he was in his late teens. And as part of his new lifestyle, Hansen-Carlson decided to get back on the bike.

With the help of Bicycle Sports Pacific and its store manager Kevin Billingsley, HansenCarlson found a road bike and was introduced to a bike club and all the caveats of the sports. “Without Kevin’s excitement for the sport, I would not have rediscovered how important the simple pleasure of riding a bike was to me,” Hansen-Carlson said. Riding became a staple of Hansen-Carlson’s life. In 2011 alone, he rode more than 20,000 km. Not even being hit by a car on two separate occasions could slow him down.
“Every time I ride a bike now, I get off that bike — whether it is freezing cold, soaking wet, whether I have a kink in my back or whatever the case is — and I am grateful for it,” HansenCarlson said. “Just because I know what it is like to not be able to enjoy it.” His passion also prompted Hansen-Carlson to give back to the sport. Hansen-Carlson founded the Canadian Velo Event Management Society — he also serves as its president — and the Society founded and manages the Prospera Valley GranFondo. The ride was created with his network of cycling friends as “a feather in the cap for the Lower Mainland,” he said. “I am so genuinely passionate about cycling that it was very easy to inspire others to ride. Starting the Canadian Velo Event Management Society and working to encourage everyone in the community to ride a bike is nothing more than the natural evolution of my story.” “It really excites me when people ride bikes; it is that simple.” The GranFondo will be held for a second straight year beginning and ending at the Fort Langley Historic Site on July 21. The inaugural event saw 1,200 cyclists participate and the $20,000 raised went to Special Olympics BC.

The Aldergrove Kodiaks took their ninth straight victory on Jan. 4 by defeating the top team in the Harold Brittain conference, in a 1-0 blanking of the Abbotsford Pilots. The game’s sole goal was scored by Kodiak Scott McHaffie at the
17:12 mark of the second period. Assists were by Joshua Cronin and Ryan Veillet. McHaffie earned the game’s first star, while Kodiak keeper Mark Menicucci got third star for the shutout. Second star went to Pilot Brett Kolins. The Pilots outshot the Kodiaks

A long distance relationship has paid off. All season, the curling quartet of skip Tyler Klymchuk and lead Rhys Gamache — who are both out of the Langley Curling Club — and Victoria Curling Club’s Corey Chester and Sanjay Bowry, the team’s third and second, respectively, have ferried back and forth between the Lower Mainland and Victoria. They are coached by Victoria’s Todd Troyer. Chester and Bowry would typically come over on Wednesdays so the team could play their league matches out in New Westminster. And on Sundays, it would be Klymchuk and Gamache’s turn to visit Victoria, catching an early ferry, training all day, and then returning home. But it all paid off as

The Selkirk College Men’s Hockey program has announced its first playing commitment for the 2013/14 British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League season, as Aldergrove Kodiaks defenceman Stefan Gonzales of Surrey has signed on to join the Saints in September. Gonzales is a veteran of three seasons in the British Columbia Hockey League, where he played his first two years with the Coquitlam Express (2009/10) and Quesnel Millionaires (2010/11). He split last season between the Chilliwack Chiefs and the Victoria Grizzlies, where he was recognized with the team’s Fan Favourite and Citizenship awards. Overall, the 20-year old has logged 168 games in Junior A, scoring once, picking up 25 assists and adding 158 minutes in penalties. In September, the Grizzlies dealt Gonzales to the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Oakville Blades, but the 20-year old chose to remain in B.C. and play close to home with the PJHL’s Aldergrove Kodiaks. He has shown off the offensive side of his game since joining the Kodiaks, scoring seven goals and totaling 26 points in 27 games while logging big minutes on the Aldergrove blueline. “Adding a player of Stefan’s experience and ability is a great way to kick off our recruiting for the 2013/14 season,” says Saints

what he saw.” Gonzales plans to enroll in Selkirk’s Business Administration program. “I’m excited to be coming to Selkirk because of the great buzz surrounding the program,” he says. “The team has been able to accomplish some special things so far this season and I’m looking forward to being a part of that. I want to contribute immediately and help the team pick up next year where they are now. Off the ice, I hope to achieve strong grades and successfully adjust to the college environment.” Gonzales describes himself as a good skating, puck-moving defenceman who is responsible in his own zone but has the ability to contribute on offence. “My skating has always been the strength of my game, as it allows me to get the puck out of trouble in my own end or jump into the play when attacking,” he says. Gonzales is the first player to commit to the Saints for the 2013/14 season, but Dubois expects a number of impact signings to follow. “One of the benefits to our great start has been the level of interest we’ve been seeing from potential recruits,” says Dubois. “Selkirk is quickly growing a reputation for our on-ice performance and style of play, which adds to the attraction of being able to study and compete in a great community.”
