Parents protest possible school closure SD70: | School district ponders closing Wood Elem. in 2013 as a cost-cutting option. WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

New information may have saved Wood Elementary School from closure—for now. Seventy parents packed the library at Maquinna Elementary, where the school district meeting was held Tuesday night, to state emphatically that they don’t want their children’s school to close. School District 70 is considering closing Wood as an elementary school and moving the VAST program into the

centrally-located facility. “Everyone has been telling us to move out of Wood because VAST is moving there,” said Darren Evans, a parent with children at Wood. “But no decision has even been made yet.” New information came to light this week that has school trustees rethinking such a move, School District 70 Superintendent Cam Pinkerton said. Pinkerton wouldn’t disclose what the new information was. In a later interview, he spoke about “...getting out of, or not paying $110,000

for the VAST lease.” He also said the information involved an existing school district facility. “But I can’t comment any more about it,” Pinkerton said.

In his presentation, Pinkerton said that increased transportation cost pressures and declining enrolment were at the heart of the school closure talks.

The district’s transportation funding will be reduced by $800,000 over the next three years, he said. The district would save $410,000 annually by closing an elementary school and moving VAST into the vacated facility. “One school closure will take care of that in the long term,” trustee chair Larry Ransom said. A special committee made up of SD70, teachers, DPAC, CUPE and parents is steering the process and examining options, Pinkerton said. A public engagement process will be unfurled shortly, and a final decision about what school will be closed will be made by mid- to late

February. The committee looked at school reconfiguration that would see moving Grade 8s to ADSS. But that would exceed the high school’s capacity of 1,000, Pinkerton said. The library at the old ADSS on Burde Street is being left standing while the rest of the property will be demolished. But moving VAST there isn’t an option because there would be costs to hook up civic services, which were cut off when the high school closed in June, Pinkerton said. Trustees said they would inquire into VAST students using space at North Island College. Continued / 11

New traditions begin with Totem 58 ‘The excitement has been building all week at the new school and there is going to be as much (spirit) as there ever was.’

WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

It’s the dawn of a new era as the new high school on Roger Street is about to be baptized with its firstever Totem basketball tournament. Twelve teams, six each in boys’ and girls’ divisions, will be vying for their respective titles at Totem 58, which is being played this weekend in Port Alberni. Games start on Friday, Jan. 11. “Every year people say ‘it doesn’t get better than this’ but it does,” tournament co-ordinator Brian Laviolette said. “I really look forward to this weekend and I think it’s going to be fantastic.” The venerable tournament is seeing some firsts this year, said the man known as Lav.

– Brian Laviolette

WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON/Alberni Valley News

Armada senior girls team stalwarts Darrion Alarie, standing left, and Nicole Irg are two of four Grade 12’s that will be counted on for leadership at Totem. Alaire and Irg have played in three Totems each.

The number of teams in each division has increased from six to eight. “This has been in the works for some time now and with the athletic hall next door the time seems right,” Lav

said. The bleachers in the new gym have a smaller capacity (500) than at the old gym (640). Nevertheless officials are working out the wrinkles of adding additional

seating, Lav said. And in a page from the NCAA Final Four, there will be a school band playing during timeouts and between games. Changes are also slated for the Totem

Spirit contest. Gone is the voting system that was used to determine the winner. Instead, a committee will decide the winner based on presentation, participation and preparation.

“All of the contestants work hard and everyone is a winner. But at the end of the day we ultimately have to choose one winner,” Lav said. Staff and students bid adieu to the old school on Burde Street last June and moved into the new one in September. Desks, chairs and trinkets weren’t the only thing to be grafted to the new facility. Totem traditions have also crossed over, Lav said. A crescendo of small events this week are leading up to the big show this

weekend. There was pajama day, Hawaiian Day, and the venerable pep rally will be held on Thursday. “The excitement has been building all week at the new school and there is going to be as much of that as there ever was,” Lav said. Totem has come full circle for Laviolette, who is in the twilight of his teaching career after more than 30 years. He’s gone from being a member of an opposing team at Totem in 1971 to coaching Alberni against opponents starting in 1980. Continued / 16

Fenton said. Mooney was travelling south in a red pickup truck when he lost control of the vehicle and slid sideways into an oncoming northbound car. Mooney was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver of the car remains in hospital in critical condition, Fenton said. The accident remains under investigation by both the RCMP and the coroners office. Road conditions were a major contributing factor, Fenton said. Mooney seemed to split his time between B.C and Alberta where he worked, Fenton said. Longtime friend Peter Wienold said he was stunned after hearing about Mooney’s death on Monday. “We just chatted on Facebook a few days before. I still see his page but now he’s not there anymore,” Wienold

said. Mooney and Wienold were part of Portal Players Dramatic Society. Wienold first met Mooney when he did some work for his gas fitting company. Mooney also owned Pro Pacific Heating in Port Alberni. Wienold remembers the first play the two acted together— Home at Six, in which Mooney played

Wienold’s best friend and his wife’s suitor. “We only used one-syllable words throughout the play, it was really a silly piece,” Wienold said. “Rob was really nervous, but he did a great job and we had a lot of laughs.” Mooney was an industrious man who was there to help whoever needed help when they needed it, Wienold said.

“He acted, built sets and was a really popular bartender,” Wienold said, adding that Mooney also played bass.“He’s really going to be missed as a club member and as a friend.” Mooney left Alberni to work in Alberta approximately one year ago. He came back to Port Alberni periodically, and made it a point to visit. “He stopped in the shop last Christmas and we just shot the breeze. He always stopped in when he was around. He was a thankful and thoughtful man,” Wienold said. “His death is a loss to our community but especially a loss to anyone who called him a friend. ” Mooney is survived by his wife and daughter. A memorial service is being held on Saturday, 1 p.m., at the Chapel of Memories.

ER NIE WEST

www.albernivalleynews.com

What if where you hurt is not the cause of the problem? What if you get headaches because of a pinched nerve in your neck but the cause of that pinched nerve in your neck was a misalignment in your pelvis? The pelvis, then the neck, would have to be corrected before the headaches could go away. The neck and pelvis problems could also have begun years before the headaches showed up. The difference between where you have symptoms, as well as the compensations over time that mask the cause and the trail they’ve left, is what I am calling your injury ‘pattern’. After over 20 years in practice, I’ve discovered that at least 50% of the time things are not what they seem. The shoulder that’s always sore isn’t purely a shoulder problem. That back pain, jaw imbalance, or hip and knee discomfort can be created by problems located elsewhere along the movement chain. They are not caused by the areas in which the distress is reported. Instead, the discomfort is the result of an injury pattern, the product of your body’s intricate interrelationships and compensations over time. Your symptoms are often the last link in a long chain of events and subtle body changes. The cause itself may be buried deep in that pattern under layers of the body’s clever adaptation. I have had my best results as a Chiropractor by analyzing the whole person, looking for clues to that first link, the elusive cause, that when corrected gets the best results. Finding that underlying pattern of injury, primarily in the spine through which most forces are translated into movement, is absolutely necessary to create a new healthy and corrected pattern. Now that’s fun! Because lying at the starting point of that chain of events, buried in that pattern, is the underlying cause of that now symptomatic problem. It’s our job as Chiropractors to find that pattern, and to correct it to give you the health you deserve. Now let’s get to the cause! Peace, Carl

Hupacasath challenge Canada-China accord WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

Port Alberni’s Hupacasath First Nation is taking the federal government to court to try and derail Canada’s investment treaty with China until there is more consultation with First Nations. Lawyers for Hupacasath, the Union of BC Indian Chiefs and the Chiefs of Ontario notified the Federal Privy Council Office they are seeking an injunction in midJanuary; they’ll file sooner if the deal is ratified earlier. Tribal lawyers didn’t receive a response from the federal government about consultation about the deal, therefore the tribe was commencing legal action. The government

[more-online www.albernivalleynews.com

violated its own rules, Hupacasath Councillor Brenda Sayers said. “We want Prime Minister Stephen Harper to do what he is legally obligated to do and that is to first consult with us,” Sayers said. The Canada-China investor protection deal was finalized in September 2012. The agreement protects and promotes Canadian investment abroad through legally binding provisions as well as to promote foreign investment in Canada, a federal government website notes. The agreement provides stronger protection for Canadians investing in China and facilitates domestic job creation and

economic growth, said federal international trade spokesperson Rudy Husny. The Canada-China agreement isn’t an anomaly. Canada has FIPAs with 14 countries, and are actively negotiating them with 12 other nations, Husny said. This is all well and good, Sayers said, but the devil is in the details of the agreement. In Hupacasath, the impact on the tribe could rear itself if the tribe didn’t want resources extracted from a sacred tribal site, or if nearby extraction compromised the site environmentally, she said. Under the agreement, China would have the right to sue Canada because it interfered with their ability to make a profit, she said.

The cause of a fire that ripped through the upper floor of a townhome remains unknown, Port Alberni Fire Chief Tim Pley said. “We know where the fire started but we don’t know the exact source of ignition,” Pley said. A fire investigator for the insurance building’s insurance company has also been brought in to investigate, Pley said. Last Friday, multiple fire crews responded to a call at 7 p.m. about a fire at Echo Park Estates on Kendall Avenue. Crews from Sproat Lake and Beaver

Creek also responded to the tightly packed townhome complex and were on standby in case the fire spread. Firemen found one living unit with heavy flames pouring out of second floor bedroom window, Deputy Fire Chief Chris Jancowski said. Fire was heavy inside so firemen doused the flames from the outside first before going in and mopping up, Jancowski said. The fire started on the second floor, the front bedroom of which sustained heaviest damage, Jancowski said. No cause has been determined yet, he added. The occupants, a mother and her child,

EDITORIAL

Your pocket’s been picked Here’s a real hero for aboriginal people It’s a new year, and that means that all levels of government have their hands in your pockets a little more deeply than in 2012. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation sent out a press release at the end of December outlining just how much additional pocket picking is coming our way in 2013. The list is substantial. The most substantial, and perhaps the most unfair, is the boost in Medical Services Plan premiums. These premiums will go up by $60 per family this year, and have now risen 24 per cent ($300 per family) in three years — far more than the rate of inflation. This boost in MSP fees was first brought in by the provincial government to help deal with its deficit, and it has since discovered that it’s a tax boost that causes minimal political trouble. It appears this premium will keep rising until enough members of the public start to pay full attention to just how much it is costing them. The federal government doesn’t get off scot-free. As of Jan. 1, premiums for Employment Insurance are rising, and so are contributions to the Canada Pension Plan. While contributors will get their CPP contributions back eventually if they retire and collect CPP, the same cannot be said for EI. A small portion of the population actually collects it, but all working people and their employers pay dearly for the program. One thing is certain — governments have an insatiable appetite for our money. While much of the money they take goes to useful services, there is plenty of room for better management and for minimal tax increases. — Langley Times

ICTORIA – The century-old plight of Canada’s aboriginal people is back in the public eye, thanks to protests dubbed Idle No More. As with Occupy protests last year, the demands are vague. One of the claims, repeated in media coverage of protests, is that the federal government is moving to end the historic Indian Act restriction against selling reserve land. A look at the federal legislation, Bill C-45, shows this is not the case. Amendments ease restrictive provisions for leasing reserve land, which remains property of the Crown held in perpetuity for the aboriginal community. This change was initiated by B.C. aboriginal leaders so they can follow the trail blazed by one of the most

entrepreneurial chiefs in Canadian history. His name is Ron Derrickson, and he served six terms as chief of the Westbank First Nation near Kelowna. One of my first big reporting assignments was covering a Royal Commission into his administration’s business affairs in the mid-1980s. There had been an astonishing 17 federal investigations before that, stemming from local claims that Derrickson was just too successful. He drove a big black Mercedes, wore expensive suits, and established a bunch of enterprises, including Canada’s first water slide. The commission was chaired by John Hall, then known as the Crown prosecutor who put serial killer Clifford Olson away, and now an appeal court judge. Derrickson’s suit jacket had a conspicuous bulge

as he took the stand each day. He was packing a semiautomatic pistol, having demanded and received a carry permit after a brutal attempt on his life. The hit man, an ex-cop, was hired by people who didn’t like the bottomline way Derrickson ran Westbank’s lease-hold mobile home parks. He showed up at Derrickson’s home one day and tried to beat him to death with a metal bar. Badly injured, Derrickson made it to his gun cabinet and shot his assailant, who survived to go to prison. Derrickson testified that his approach to the Indian Affairs bureaucracy was simple. He did business, and if they didn’t like it, they could tell him. Reserve land can’t be sold, so he leased it, offering people a low-cost way to enjoy the sunny Okanagan.

‘He grew up ‘dirt poor, living in a tar paper shack’.’

His business plan was also simple. Drive to California and see what they’re doing. Drive back and do it in B.C. A 2007 profile of Derrickson by Greg Fjetland in Canadian Business magazine describes how he came by his approach to Ottawa. He grew up “dirt poor, living in a tar paper shack.” His family name was Tousawasket, until the local Indian Agent drew an Anglo name out of a hat. He and his brother were the first aboriginal kids to attend public school in Kelowna. Racist bullying drove his parents to move him to a residential school in Washington State. He dropped out in Grade 9, toiled on farms, learned to weld, and worked his way into ranching, real estate and politics. He never gave up or backed down, ever. The Hall commission and all previous government probes concluded that he did nothing wrong. Continued / 9

Columnist lauds leader’s actions From / 8 Derrickson sued his local accusers and won, and Ottawa began to change its racist, paternalistic ways. Which brings us back to today. Derrickson’s pioneering work is still changing the Indian Act for the better. This effort is under dishonest attack from people whose legacy is mainly incompetence

and failure. Protesters demand more unearned public subsidy, and a petulant soup-only strike is celebrated as an act of bravery. Choose your own hero. I’ve chosen mine. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

To the Editor, To help understand the present ‘Idle No More’ movement, I urge all my nonaboriginal brethren to read 2 books: Rupert Ross’s Dancing With A Ghost and especially Daniel J. Kuhlen’s A Layperson’s Guide To Treaty Rights in Canada (University of Saskatchewan, Native Law Center, 1985). Dancing With A Ghost (and its sequel) helps one better understand how First Nations people view the world and how to respectfully engage with them. Incidentally, it would be nice if Canada’s government engaged it’s First Nations in a “nation to nation” fashion just like it would do with any other nation it does business with (like China). A Layperson’s Guide to Treaty Rights in Canada is particularly timely as it helps one understand First Nations as a treaty-people, how treaties were crafted and their content. It’s an eye-opener, as it soon becomes obvious how “firstcontact” colonialists took advantage of the treaty

process, positioning themselves to eventually expropriate the land from First Nations. The colonial government viewed treaties as “obligatory agreements” that carried no legal weight. But beyond the understanding of the colonialists, First Nations were used to entering into treaties with each other as they conducted their affairs with the independence and autonomy of soverign states amongst themselves. They took signing treaties with first-contact colonialists very seriously. Failure to appreciate the reality of First Nations nationhood prior to European contact is to everyone’s detriment. We cannot hope to sustain a 21st century version of colonialism. By treaty protection, First Nations have been protecting the land from unfettered development for generations. The status quo is no longer acceptable, which is why First Nations and their supporters are Idle No More. Liz Stonard, Port Alberni

City remains ‘stagnant’ To the Editor, That there were more than 8,000 school students here in 1962 and just over 3,000 now, illustrates the fact that the Alberni Valley is a decayed, stagnant, aging community. It’s highly unlikely that this community will ever again revert to its former size and robust economic activity, the heart of which is still forestry, idle talk about a “new economy” notwithstanding. And, aside from Staples, Lordco, No Frills and Walmart, retail activity and growth in North Port are largely the result of relocation of existing South Port businesses, like Home Hardware, The Brick, CIBC, the GM dealership and many others. As for South Port, it’s now a disaster area, a few successful small new businesses notwithstanding. Many of the buildings there should be razed. To top it all, there’s going to be a new study about facilities for seniors in the Valley with a view to attract more seniors and over-50 groups here.

What a bad idea, given the need to expand our hospital to at least 60 beds, the need for two more multi-level care facilities, and an urgent need for much better home support. Bring in more people over 50 and we’’ll need even more of the above at even greater cost. Richard Berg, Port Alberni

Questions posed in prose To the Editor, “We wish for others what we have ourselves” is labour’s motto but has achieving it proved as easy as winning Canada Lotto? Has “Each according to their need and ability” proven viability? Google reports Canadian Auto Workers Accept contract with Ford: “New hires drop from $24 to $20.40/ hour and progression to $34 top rate lengthens from six to 10 years”: is this a golden age accord? Is it ludicrous to impose 10-year apprenticeships for jobs on an assembly line? Will 10 years/ indentured slavery for next generation

human rights define; is the organized or rich cure, to live off the avails of the unorganized or poor? Exodus 21, verse 7 permits selling daughters into slavery but CAW includes sons as well. Does “one for all and all for one” only ensure seniors’ bottom lines will swell? Ethical investment funds, workers attract but if union ethics have lacked, are youth better served by Minimum Wage and Standards Act? If new hires appealed to Conservatives, would age discrimination be repealed? If it doesn’t affect Ford’s bottom line, will Harper level the playing field? For enfranchising youth, would he be nominee for man of the century or condone CAW autocracy to fracture unity and create industry aristocracy? “Man’s inhumanity to man” existed since time began; has labour adopted this business plan? Will these statements make me persona non grata in CLC and NDP or shall the truth set us free? R. Frankow, Port Alberni

◆ OPINION

QUESTION of the week

www.albernivalleynews.com

Now that we are over a week into the New Year many of us are really happy our New Year’s resolutions are going well, or we are feeling badly that we have messed up already. The desire is there, but our will can be weak. I will pass on to you some good counsel given to me. Make our first resolution that of drawing near to God -- especially studying to learn about the love and true character of God. For the better we know Him the more we will love Him. The more we love Him the greater will be our motivation. Also the better we know Him the greater will be our power to do well. Alberni Valley United Church

Quay block party wraps up centennial travellers and cargo used to dock there, and Alberni’s final city hall was located there before Alberni and Port Alberni amalgamated. Two legacies will be unveiled at the event: a Bear on the Boardwalk and a wishing fountain, both carved by local artists (See page 22 for more). Everyone showing up to the quay will have the opportunity to be in a group photograph. Organizers want to replicate a photo that was taken in 1912 when the Mile 0

‘New’ mall drives retail successes WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

A new shopping district helped keep customers in town during a busy Christmas retail season, Home Hardware owner Jan Lavertu said. Home Hardware showed a sharp increase in business during the holiday season but the factor must be taken in context, Lavertu said. “We’re at a new location and are offering some new products. Our sales are up substantially but it’s not really a true comparison to last year,” Lavertu said. The Alberni Mall area, where Home Hardware moved last month, is becoming a retail hub that benefits both store owners and customers, Lavertu said. “It gives people more choices and incentive to stay in town and shop instead of going out of town,” he said. “We want to give shoppers a good selection of products at a good price and it’s convenient for them to return things here at home.” Christmas sales account for approximately 10 per cent of Home Hardware’s business, Lavertu said. “We’re a bit different than other businesses that rely on Christmas sales. Our upswing is in the spring.” The store usually takes on extra staff over the holidays but already hired more staff to accommodate the move into the larger space. this holiday and coffee makers were one of the more popular items that sold like hotcakes, he said. Down Johnston Road at Jowsey’s, approximately 50 people braved the elements by camping outside the store’s doors in advance of a Boxing Day sale. Continued / 23

Three time’s the charm TOTEM 58

HOOPS: | Girls’ division gaining strength. WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

If three times is a charm, then luck will shine on the Alberni District Secondary School Armada senior girls basketball team at Totem 58 this weekend, co-coach Greg Freethy said. The girls’ team is competing with five others in the third installment of the Totem girls’ division this weekend. Other teams competing include Ballenas, GP Vanier, Kwalikum, Mt. Doug and Parklands. The Armada have already beaten Mount Doug and Vanier this season.

The Armada open up against rival Ballenas Whalers in its first game on Friday morning. “We lost to them 50-42 earlier this season and we really want that one back,” Freethy said. The team’s feature game is against Parklands Secondary on Friday night. The team is an unknown commodity, Freethy said. “They’ve got three players over six feet tall. But we’ve got some size of our own we can match them with,” he said. Co-coached by Al Seredick, the Armada are 9-3 so far this season and 2-0 in league play. Four of the team’s 11 players are Grade 12’s: Nicole

Christmas Classic in Victoria where they went 2-1. A league game earlier this week had to be cancelled due to snow. “Our last game was a month ago. But we practiced hard this week and we’ll be ready,” Freethy said. Fans should look for the athletic Armada to play an up-tempo style with both fast breaks and a halfcourt offense. Winning a third girls title is going to boil down to one simple but elusive factor – consistency. “The team has played well then hit a dip. They’ve had leads and allowed others teams back,” Freethy said. “We need all 11 players on their game this weekend...” Freethy said.

Armada senior girls players Darrion Alarie, with ball, and Chelsea McIntosh go through their paces at practice.

Irg, Darrion Alarie, Tia Anderson and Chelsea McIntosh, and they’ve seen this before, Freethy said. “Those four have played in more Totems between them than all the others combined so they’ll be looked to for leadership and experience,” Freethy said. The team’s last action was in December at the

Armada boys have depth TOTEM 58

WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The Alberni District Secondary School Armada senior boys basketball team has a scorer, a scrapper and an unsung hero in their arsenal as they head into this weekend’s Totem 58 Basketball Tournament. The six teams vying for the boys title are: ADSS, Woodlands, Stelly’s, Reynolds, Highland and Kwalikum. The Armada boys’ first game is against Nanaimo’s Woodlands

Secondary on Friday at 11 a.m. The clash promises to be a good one, Armada head coach Neelam Parmar said. “We lost 72-71 to them at the Cowichan tournament in December. Our team was flu-ridden then but we’re all healthy now,” Parmar said. The team plays its second game against Reynolds Secondary, whom it narrowly lost to earlier this season. The Armada have been rebuilding and are starting to see the fruits of their labour

From / 3 “I knew about this magical tournament when I first played but it’s a different experience being a part of years later,” Lav said. “We only had four teams my first year.

I knew it would really take off when it expanded to six teams.” There’s still an old mystique to Totem, only it has evolved with the new move, Lav said. “You never forget

this season. Forward Josh Kurucz, who has been scoring 26 points per game this season, will be looked to for leadership and points. Connor VanVliet takes charges, goes for loose balls and does the gritty work. And the team’s unsung hero is Luke Bradley, who has averaged 14 points and 12 rebounds per game. “We have a good bench but those are our cornerstones,” Parmar said. The senior boys are 5-2 this year but the record is deceiving. Continued / 17

From / 16 “We lost three of our games by no more than seven-point margins so we could just as easily be 5-2,” Parmar said. “Those losses were eekers and we hope to get over that hump this weekend.” The team has been working hard on offensive execution, a key ingredient to winning it all this weekend. “We’re scoring points but we’re also giving up the ball. We need to hold the ball, make

better choices and get better shot selection,” Parmar said. The team to beat at this year’s Totem will be last year’s champion – Stelly’s Secondary, Parmar said. Ranked No. 9 on the Island, the Stingers pack a one-two punch in forward Parker Phillips and guard David Heywood, who scored 36 and 15 points respectively against undefeated Claremont in a December game. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Coach’s Comment Victoria Grizzlies @ Alberni Valley Bulldogs Friday, January 11, 2013 @ 7:00pm This Friday the Bulldogs and Grizzlies meet for the sixth time this season. Remarkably, the previous five games have been decided in overtime. Victoria enters this weekend’s play sitting atop the BCHL standings, tied with Penticton with 51 points and are the highest ranked BCHL team in the weekly CJHL rankings. After blowing a lead and losing to Cowichan 3-2 in OT in their first game of 2013, the Grizzlies have gone on a 2-game winning streak beating both Nanaimo (5-1) and Powell River (4-2). The Bulldogs are looking to end a 2-game slide after being on the wrong end of 2-1 games to both Cowichan and Prince George. This will be the first game for both teams after the January 10th roster deadline so it will be interesting to see what both teams will look like. However, safe to say that the Port Alberni’s Fitzgerald triplets will be in the line up for Victoria against the ‘Dogs. GET YOUR BULLDOGS HOCKEY CARDS!

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must ďŹ ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can ďŹ gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Wishing on stones CENTENNIAL: | Walt Collins sculpting fountain. SUSAN QUINN Alberni Valley News

Stone sculptor Walt Collins has been commissioned by the City of Port Alberni to carve a wishing well as a centennial legacy project.

Collins received four two-foot cubes of limestone on Tuesday weighing 1,300 pounds apiece. “They’re going to be individual wishing ponds,” Collins said, admitting he only has a rough idea of how they will fit together for the final product. “Once I see the stone I can see what I’ve got to work with.”

This will be Collins’ first time carving limestone, which is harder than the soapstone and alabaster he is accustomed to. Collins said the final product will be installed in the courtyard at Echo Centre. Collins will have at least one of the pieces to the fountain

Pathway kicks off Jan. 16 Students in Anne Ostwald’s Civic Studies 11 class at Alberni District Secondary will hold an indoor groundbreaking for their Pathway to Success on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 8:45 a.m. in the ADSS theatre. The public is invited to hear plans for the path, which will connect ADSS with North Island College and feature trees, picnic tables, lighting and student artwork.

Retailers see rise in business From / 15 Store owner Jennifer Norn and two staff members served pizza to the crowd of diehards a half hour before the sale. Christmas accounts for approximately 10 per cent of the store’s yearly take, and Norn estimates that sales are up by $1,200 over last year. The store’s business is steady throughout the year but Norn said that people start planning for Christmas early, and that she starts to see an upswing in business from September through January. Jowsey’s completely sold out of oneonly items over the holidays, and sold out of the three sets of a sofa sectional it displayed in its window. “That was just nuts,” Norn said. The store was impacted positively by online sales, Norn said. “People can order right from our website. We get a lot of business from Bamfield, Tofino, Ucluelet, and from Ahousaht particularly,” she said. The store does lose business to out of town shopping, but no more so than over the past 40 years, Norn said. “We hold our own. We’ll just keep weathering that one,” she said. reporter@allbernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews
