Downtown icon signs off Cloverdale’s longest-operating family business to close its doors

By Jennifer Lang The sign at Dann’s Electronics, one of Cloverdale’s most recognizable symbols, is coming down this month, and with it, Surrey’s longest-serving businessman will be calling it a day. The glorious neon sign with swooping red letters – a fixture above the 5657 176 Street storefront since the 1950s – is a rental. And at 88, owner and operator Allan Dann says it’s time to retire. He put the heritage building up for sale in September. The new owner is an antiques dealer expanding out of Fort Langley. Any merchandise from the sales and service business that doesn’t get snapped up during Dann’s closing out sale will probably go to her, although where the remaining stock of rare and antique parts will end up is less certain. The eclectic shop, graced with a highceilinged showroom, along with a bank vault that’s used as a storeroom, was filled with vintage and new flatscreen TVs, stereos, and, until recently, home appliances. There’s a section devoted to vacuum parts and sale, plus bike sales and repairs, too. Entering Dann’s Electronics is like stepping back in time, making it a popular back drop for film and TV productions, most recently an episode of the Sci-fi cult series, Fringe. The director didn’t change a thing,

and even persuaded Allan to appear in a scene. His dad, Ernie, started a bicycle repair business in 1921, soon moving to Cloverdale, where he set up shop on the Pacific Highway in what was then the centre of Surrey. The business – originally called Ernest H. Dann – branched out into wiring homes, businesses and farms for electricity. “The old joke was that dad got into bicycles and then he got into wiring,” remembers Allan, explaining how Ernie needed a little extra help, so he asked his wife to look after the books and the front end. “She said sure, ok. So I started here. I was in a cradle, so I started young,” Allan chuckles. “And no minimum wage.” The business has been in the same location at 5657 176 Street since 1932. Originally a Royal Bank, and then a government liquor store, the two-storey, wood frame building had accommodations for the bank manager upstairs. The family – Ernie, mom, and young Allan, moved in. He grew up in downtown Cloverdale, and went to school at what was then Surrey’s only high school, which was later named after Lord Tweedsmuir. He forged many fond memories along the way. “Cloverdale was a great place to grow up – any small town is. You knew everybody.” There was a blacksmith’s across the street to the south. “I was always over there, be-

cause it was interesting. I came back with new words.” By the time Allan was in high school, he was working on weekends wiring barns and chicken houses. “Whatever had to be done.”

For fun, he and his pals would hop the Interurban to Langley to go to the movies. It was ten cents one way. They’d walk the three miles home.

Thieves wipe out family’s baby photos By Jennifer Lang A young Cloverdale family is reeling after thieves broke into their home last Friday night, going through all of their belongings in search of loot to steal. Returning home Jan. 4 after dinner with family in Fleetwood, Gary and Gurprit Sohi were devastated to realize they’d been robbed. “It looked like a tornado had hit our top floor. Clothing and anything and everything was ripped out,” Gary said, describing how the thieves meticulously went from room to room, rifling through their closets and drawers, taking anything of value – jewelry, cash, electronics.

But it was only after the couple discovered their camera and laptop computers were gone that the new parents realized something much more precious was taken: all of their photos of their son’s birth and pictures taken over the holidays, their first as a family in their home at 176 Street and 63 Avenue. The loss has prompted new dad Gary to appeal to the public in the hopes their family’s priceless memories will be returned, no questions asked. Missing are photographs of son Manav’s birth, their visit to the temple for important religious rites immediately following the birth

before returning home on Jan. 6. Prior to leaving the house Jan. 4, the Sohis locked their doors and windows, closed the drapes and set their burglar alarm. For added security, the home has bars on the basement windows. Gary also took care to engage the safety lock on the sliding doors the thieves used to gain entry – all standard operating procedure. “My wife makes fun of me all the time,” he said. “She says I have OCD with locks.” They left at around 5:30 p.m., went on an errand to Walmart and then headed to Fleetwood to have dinner with Gary’s parents. They returned home to Cloverdale between 9:30 and 10 p.m. to discover the door leading from the garage to the basement was open, along with a door to the yard. “I knew we had been hit,” said Gary. Whoever broke into their home ripped the

alarm’s horn out of the wall, so the alarm was technically going but there would have been no sound. “After that, they just kind of went to town on the whole house.” Neighbours on either side of the Sohis weren’t home either. Gary would like to warn other residents to be on the alert – he said there was a similar

incident a couple of weeks ago. Despite the mess, Surrey RCMP investigators and forensic experts didn’t find much in the way of solid evidence at the crime scene. The Sohis were told it looked like a professional job. “It’s an invasion of privacy knowing someone went through your things.”

His wife Gurprit feels like she’s not safe in her own house anymore. “This is not how we expected to end our holidays and begin a new year,” Gary said. The police told them there wasn’t much they could have done differently to avoid the theft, and are offering little hope they will solve the crime, or locate their stolen belongings.

Falling over the ‘fiscal cliff ’ Neocons still believe that tax breaks for corporations, the rich, will trickle down to the rest of us To the editor; Is it easier to sit on the edge of a fiscal cliff when your annual earnings are $1,000,000 and change or when you are searching your pockets for spare change? The answer shouldn’t be dependent on ideology. Nevertheless in Canada as in the U.S. neoconservatives – not

to be mistaken for conservatives – still believe that cutting taxes for the benefit of billion dollar corporations and the richest few while crumbs trickle down to the rest of us, smaller government, fewer services, less attention to social responsibility, less investment in the future and deregulation is the answer to all the woes

fellow-travellers. It is time for the wealthiest few to pay their fair share as their fathers would have done rather than to preach austerity for others through their political and media voices in the face of want they have created. Brian Marlatt White Rock

Regional policing isn’t the answer

To the editor; The recent cry for a regional police force is all about power and control. And nothing but a knee-jerk reaction to the Missing Women’s report. Nothing would change. All the missing women were reported missing to the Vancouver Police. They were the prime investigators and it was their responsibility and no one else’s. They say there would be better communication, but they already have a compatible computer system that all Lower Mainland and BC police can access for information and communication. Do you for one minute think that, say, Vancouver district would care what is happening in Surrey district? All districts, as now,

would be working on different radio channels but could switch over as needed. You could end up with Gregor Robertson being in charge and we know his track record. His priority would be Vancouver first. Kash Heed says that the initial start up cost would be expensive but would even out down the road. I fail to see how this would happen. Vancouver and Surrey are almost equal in population (with Surrey soon to pass Vancouver). Surrey has a bigger geographical area than Vancouver. Vancouver Police have in the area of 1,450 members, given their union staffing levels. Surrey RCMP have in the area of 650 mem-

of our world. Even as wealth is redistributed upward from the middle to the upper classes of income earners who are more than willing to pass the burden of good government down to others while depressing wages, the neoconservative mantra is chanted mindlessly by their political class and certain media

bers and no union. By going to regional policing Surrey would then have to follow union staffing rules for their population, which could mean hiring 800 to 1,000 new police officers. They would then lose the 10 per cent federal funding. They would have to pay for training, equipment, benefits and increased support services. Now multiply this by five other detachments. So I fail to see how Mr. Heed sees this as being cheaper. No. It is all about power and control for Mr. Heed and nothing would change except a large increase in your property taxes. Mr. J. Murder suspect charged A man found dead in a Langley Township house on New Years Eve and the man charged with his murder were friends, a police spokesperson said last week. The victim was 40-year-old Cloverdale resident Cole Adam Manning. The suspect, Jason Terrence Brewer, 24, has been charged with second degree murder. The accused made a brief court appearance and has been ordered held in custody until Jan. 16. The motive for the murder is still under investigation, but police have ruled out gang involvement, Sgt. Jennifer Pound of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said. Langley RCMP were called about a body in a basement of a home in the 19800 block of 69 Avenue at around 7:30 a.m. Dec. 31. A suspect was quickly identified and an alert issued. Abbotsford police and Langley RCMP later arrested a man on 264 Street near 48 Avenue in Aldergrove. – Black Press

Lorie Chortyk When considering your New Year’s resolutions for 2013, why not make your furry friends part of your plans? The BC SPCA offers some ideas on New Year’s resolutions for animal lovers: 1. Walk! Get yourself and your dog off the couch and into the outdoors. Most dogs need walking at least twice daily to stay healthy and you will benefit too. If you don’t have a dog, why not volunteer to walk dogs at your local shelter? 2. ID your pet. The SPCA reunites thousands of lost animals with their families every year. Many animals are never claimed, however, and must be adopted into new homes because they have no identification. Make sure your pets have ID tags on their collar and a microchip or tattoo, and keep the information updated. 3. Take part in National Cupcake Day on Feb. 25. Help end animal cruelty one cupcake at a time. The money you raise baking and distributing cupcakes by donation will help the BC SPCA rescue, re-home and provide emergency services for injured and abandoned animals in B.C. Get involved by registering online at nationalcupcakeday.ca. 4. It’s Hip to Snip. Help spread the word about the crucial importance of spaying or neutering pets – or make a donation to your local shelter to help with spay/neuter programs. Thousands of unwanted animals are born in B.C. each year – often with tragic consequences. 5. Don’t Shop – Adopt! If you are considering getting a new pet make the SPCA or another animal shelter your first adoption option. Avoid buying pets from online sites — you may be supporting puppy mills by buying this way.

Have a Fine and Furry New Years 6. Make humane food choices. Commit to purchasing foods raised according to high standards of animal welfare. Look for SPCA Certified products in the meat and dairy sections of your grocery store. You can find out where to buy SPCA Certified products at spca.bc.ca. 7. Sign up for the BC SPCA Kids Club. Connect the young animal lovers in your life with other like-minded youth through an annual BC SPCA Kids Club membership ($15).

Come check us out online!!

www.newmacanimalfeed.com Coupons and special offers available.

8. Make the Switch. Switch the toxic ethylene glycol antifreeze in your vehicle to pet-friendly propylene-based antifreeze. 9. Donate your time or money. Help a homeless or wild animal get the care they need. The BC SPCA’s priority funds let you choose which program or service to support, including cruelty investigations, sheltering, wildlife rehabilitation, education and advocacy. Or give of yourself – the BC SPCA simply could not function without the help of our 4,000 amazing volunteers across the province. 10. Sign up! Sign up for the 2013 Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause walk in your community this September and help us raise urgently needed funds for abused, homeless, neglected and injured animals. Visit spca.bc.ca for more information on these resolutions and other ways you can make a life-saving difference for animals. – Lorie Chortyk is general manager, community relations, for the BC SPCA.

There were sometimes three to four calls in a day, remembers Gail Hendrickson, a long time Dann’s employee who’ll be with him until the business closes on Jan. 24. He was in Grade 12 when the U.S. naval base in Pearl Harbour was bombed by the Japanese, bringing the Second World War close to home, particularly since he was close friends with the Osaka boys. The family disappeared the next day and he never saw them again. They were interned along with thousands of other Canadians of Japanese descent and removed from the West Coast. He joined the air force in 1942, serving as an instrument mechanic, serving in Tofino, Coal Harbour (outside of Port Hardy), Haida Gwaii, and finally in Vancouver. After his stint in the air force, Allan returned to work at the shop, eventually taking the reins and incorporating as Dann’s Electronics. Television was a big change. They hired technicians. His dad – practically stone deaf – stuck to radio repairs. Another big change was when then they got into appliances. They were surprised when automatic washing machines caught on. The repair business, he says, isn’t what it used to be.

“The value of things today has changed so dramatically.’ - Allan Dann, Dann’s Electronics

“The value of things today has changed so dramatically. I mean, you can replace a television set and you don’t have to spend 10 years paying for it,” he says. “[Today] people tend to say, ‘to heck with this and go buy another one,’”he says. “It’s changed. when I was growing up in the business, you repaired everything – everything.” Allan married his wife Brenda, a school teacher, in 1950. They have four kids and six grandchildren. None of their children – two boys, two girls – followed him into the business. At 88, he’s nearly a quarter of a century past the point when most people retire. And he’s still going strong, putting in six days a week in a people-oriented business. But a few months ago, he figured it was time to sell. It was as good a time as any. On his last day, he says he won’t have any regrets. As far as he’s aware, Dann’s Electronics is the longest continually operating business in Surrey. He’s not worried about what retirement will bring, and is taking each day as it comes. Meantime, there’s still some merchandise to move. “I’m not going to be able to sell everything to the bare walls,” he admits.

– Friends are invited to an open house at Dann’s Electronics this Saturday, Jan. 12 from 1-5 p.m.

Unlikely pair eyes dream wedding By Jennifer Lang If someone had told her 10 years ago that Jeremy Sheppard would be the man she would marry, Jenna Rose would have thought they were crazy. Jenna and Jeremy shared the same homeroom class at Clayton Heights Secondary for five years running, but the bad boy who wore baggy jeans and cut class and the studious “goody two-shoes” in pink didn’t hit it off. “He would always poke fun of me in class, because I was so shy,” says Jenna, now a medical office worker. “I was kind of nerdy.” Otherwise, they never spoke to each other. They ran in different circles – Jeremy with the popular kids, Jenna

with her own, smaller circle of friends. According to Jenna, Jeremy used to skip school all the time. “I’ve never skipped school ever,” she insists. “I was into beauty pageants – he was into skateboarding. It was almost like that Avril Lavigne song.” And when they graduated in 2007, Jenna was thrilled that she wouldn’t have to deal with boys like Jeremy again. Fast-forward to New Years Eve of that year. Jenna was a student at Simon Fraser University, and Jeremy – now a metal fabricator – was working at a construction company. They ended up at the same party. “We kind of talked

and caught up,” she says. The evening turned into a blossoming friendship that saw the pair gradually growing closer over the course of many months. It was a troubled time for Jeremy, who battled personal demons, and eventually overcame them with Jenna’s help. “I just really cared about what happened to him and over time, he started warming up to me.” A year later, they embarked on what’s become a conventional love story, though it didn’t start out that way.

The past four years have been filled with romance, love, travel and adventure, like feeding beluga whales at the Vancouver Aquarium and learning how to ski last winter. They were on a Whistler getaway when Jeremy proposed, arranging for room service to spell out in rose petals on the floor the question Jenna had been waiting to hear: “Will you marry me?” “Of course I said yes!” Jenna recalls. They’re planning a small, destination wedding with just a few

guests. To their great happiness, they’re one of 10 finalist couples in a contest for a $20,000 dream wedding in the Mexican Riviera. They’re hoping Cloverdale residents will help them garner enough votes to win. “Maybe it wasn’t love at first sight,” Jenna says, “but sometimes life throws you a curveball and everything you never knew you wanted has become everything you can’t live without.”

Go to www.globalnews.ca/ contests/dreamwedding and vote for Jenna and Jeremy to Jan. 20.

Team Tardi focuses on the action during the 2013 B.C. Junior Curling Championships in Coquitlam.

Locals sweep up silver

By Jennifer Lang It was an exciting week for team Tardi, a promising curling team from Cloverdale and Langley that claimed silver Sunday in Coquitlam at the 2013 B.C. Junior Curling Championships. The Langley Curling Club team – made up of skip Tyler Tardi, his older brother and third Jordan Tardi, both Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary students, plus second Nicholas Meister, lead Zachary Umbach, and coach Paul Tardi, faced idol and fellow Langley Curling Club veteran Tyler Klymchuck in the finals Jan. 6. “They have looked up to him all these years and it was a real privilege for them to play their idol,” said Anita Tardi, mom to Jordan and Tyler, who

added it was the Tardi team’s first time at the B.C. juniors, open to curlers aged 20 and under. Team Tardi lost 4-9 to Klymchuck. The rivals scored four points in the second end, and held onto their lead, despite some good strategizing by team Tardi. Jordan and Tyler Tardi join a third Cloverdale curler, Rhett Hildenbrandt this weekend at the Langley Curling Club where they’ll compete for a berth at the Juvenile Curling Provincials in Prince George in March. Next weekend, Jordan, Tyler, Rhett and his brother Brad represent Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary at the high school playdowns at the Tunnel Town Curling Club in hopes of qualifying for the high school curling provincials in Kamloops.
