Reviving 5,000 years of civilization Over a million people have pressed their noses against Shen Yun’s window to another world. The dazzling stage production, spanning 5,000 years of Chinese culture, combines some of the world’s finest classical Chinese dancers with handcrafted costumes, animated backdrops and legends of heavenly wonder and imperial drama — one moment you’re on the dusty plains of an ancient battleground, the next you’re soaring high up in the heavens with celestial fairies. Built on profound traditional aesthetics and accompanied by the live Shen Yun orchestra, Shen Yun 2013’s limited engagement of Jan 10-13 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre (630 Hamilton) is a must-see. Vancouver’s beloved mid-winter festival (brightening the days’ wait until our first February stat holiday) returns for a ninth year, presenting acclaimed local, national and international artists between January 15 to February 3. Venues in and around Vancouver will be filled with work from Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Japan, Scotland, Taiwan and the United States. The PuSh Festival presents live performing arts with theatre, dance, music, and various forms of multimedia and hybrid performance, featuring more than 160 performances and events over 20 days. Eighteen Main Series shows (such as Ana Sokolovic’s intoxicating a cappella opera, Svadba/Wedding, pictured), three full weeks of Club PuSh, the PuSh Assembly networking event, an opening gala, a Free Film series, shows paired with Dine Out Vancouver restaurants and a number of artist talks and other ancillary events. Ticket prices and show times vary, details at PushFestival.ca. Photo: Donat photography

Amaluna takes its final bow Just as the blue and yellow peaks of the Cirque du Soleil tents start to become one with the landscape along False Creek, they must come down. Cirque’s female-powered Amaluna, described rather accurately as The Tempest meets Wonder Woman, concludes its much-buzzed-about run on Jan. 20. And while some might desire the show’s clown duo to start driving to Seattle early (they were painfully unfunny), anyone in Vancouver who hasn’t seen star Iuliia Mykhailova’s sensual moonlit waterbowl love scene, or the absolutely riveting branch balancing act (performer Lara Jacobs builds an enormous extension of her body by picking up the components with her feet), or felt a little flicker of lizard-love for the serpentine juggler Cali (aka Viktor Kee), will want to take a seat before it’s gone. Tickets range from $65 to $175. For tickets and more information go to CirqueDuSoleil.com/amaluna. Charles William Pelletier photo

Michael Eckford and Fiona Forbes always thought the funniest parts of their television show took place when the cameras stopped rolling. Now the cameras stay on for the web audience. Rob Newell photo

The Rush — bloopers and all By Martha Perkins

E

ver wish you could go behind the scenes of a television show and watch all the parts that were edited out? Welcome to The Rush. Its hosts are bravely going where few hosts have ever dared go before — live airing of all those tiny moments that no one else is supposed to see. It works like this. For two hours every weekday, the cameras roll inside the Shaw television studios on West Cordova, picking up every word that is spoken by long-time television partners Michael Eckford and Fiona Forbes as they tape the reminted version of Urban Rush. Every second of those two hours is live-streamed on the web (http://new.livestream. com/therushtv). That means every time they flub an intro and have to do it again, the web audience watches them go through the process. When one interview ends, the cameras stay on them as the goodbyes are said, the guests leave and Eckford and Forbes have 15 minutes to fill in before the next guests arrive. So when Eckford checks underneath the life-sized horse lamp in the studio to see whether it’s a stallion or a gelded version, the web audience hears him exclaim, “Whoa, that’s not an udder!” Trip, fall, sneeze, bend over to pick up a pen? Nothing is hidden from the cameras. It can

then letting him take the blame. “It’s been really fun but totally embarrassing,” she says. In this way, Eckford and Forbes are the perfect guinea pigs for such a new approach. As one of their first producers said, they like each other enough to get along but dislike each other just enough to make good chemistry. “It’s like a brother and sister — you poke the bear,” she says. For all of his ease on camera, Eckford says that in real life he’s a real homebody, preferring to being with his wife and three kids — a 15-year-old daughter (who rolls her eyes at some of his antics) and boys aged five and three. Put him in a crowded social situation, he says, and “I can make any conversation awkward.” Forbes on the other hand, never gets an invitation she doesn’t enjoy. She’s constantly out about town, supporting her favourite causes and checking out everything — and everyone — that’s new and interesting. It was a bit daunting to take the made-in-Vancouver show national. Forbes is well known here — she’s repeatedly been the top television personality in WE Vancouver’s Best of the City survey — but no matter how long you’ve been doing this, you still worry whether people will like you, she says. And she wants the ROC (Rest Of Canada) to like Vancouver, too. “It’s fun to go back and re-introduce yourself for the first time,” Eckford says.”We’re confident we’ll find our audience and our audience will find us.”

be like a live blooper reel — watch that glass of water fly off the table when Eckford puts a book down beside it — or a reality tv show about a tv show. The web audience isn’t just silently watching the antics, however. They feel very much a part of the goings on, even though they might be half a continent away. They’re tweeting and Facebooking and emailing their comments during those two hours, which an intern responds to immediately. It’s a melding of the interactive nature of social media with the more traditional television talk show. Of those two hours, half an hour is edited to air across the country on Shaw stations every weekday night at 10pm. (And 10am the next day.) Another half hour is tacked onto the Vancouver portion of the show. “We’ve always said, ‘This should be on the show,’” Forbes says of the banter that takes place between taping. Some of their best moments were when no one else was watching. It was Eckford who had the “lightbulb moment” when, in thinking of ways to revitalize the program, he thought of airing all of those off-camera moments. “The Rush is really two friends who have worked together for 16 years. We’re like a family — some of the funniest parts are when we forget the cameras are still on,” he says. The only problem, says Forbes with one of her dimpled smiles, is that everyone now realizes that she can swear like a trucker and she’s often the one egging Eckford on and

FreshSheet End of an era Il Giardino is not only one of the oldest Italian restaurants in Vancouver, but in an industry that has three times as many failures as successes, it has earned the reputation of being one of the best since it opened in 1976. But now the building at the corner of Pacific and Hornby has been sold for a condo development and owner/maitre’ d Umberto Menghi has decided to close the restaurant. “It was a very bittersweet decision to make,” he says in a press release, “as Il Giardino is one of my proudest career achievements.” The restaurant will continue to serve dinners only until this spring, with Menghi giving double helpings of praise to his long-serving staff. Meanwhile, he will continue to operate his two restaurants in Whistler, Il Caminetto and Trattoria di Umberto.

and brand ambassador of Donnelly Group. “This new role has been tailor-made for me,” he says in a letter to friends and colleagues. “I am a bartender at heart and in function — creating experiences with handson drink design and personalized hospitality is at the core of what I do. My focus now is to share my philosophies, experience and passion with the bartenders of Donnelly Group and inspire them to be better and create great experiences. I look forward to continue getting my hands dirty doing what I love and mentoring the next great generation of bartenders.”

Tickets are now on sale for the hugely successful Vancouver International Wine Festival, which this year pays special attention to California wines, especially chardonnays. It’s not a very traditional partnership but on January 17, it’s bound to work well when Masa Shiroki of Artisan Sake Maker teams up with Yujiro Nakajima (guitar) and Liam MacDonald (percussion) at Visual Space (2075 Alberta). The sake will be paired with Mr. Shiroki’s favorite cheeses and cured meats and vegan delicacies will be created by chef Melissa LeClair. Felicia’s invites you to step back in time SoundBites

By Jean-Edouard de Marenches

O

n April 14, 1980, Lucia Colonna served her first dish to customers at her new restaurant on East Hastings, far beyond Commercial Drive in the then distant Vancouver suburb. The restaurant was named Felicia’s, after Lucia’s daughter. On a bright afternoon recently, I was walking on the south side of the street when I noticed a burgundy awning, sporting an Italian flag. A plain aluminum door, with bars and kitsch signs completed the ensemble. You’d be forgiven if you passed by without noticing. Drawn by curiosity more than hunger, since I had already had lunch, I pushed open the door and walked in. There, lay a surprisingly large but dimly lit room, tables dressed simply with red gingham, walls covered with pictures and maps of Italy and autographed photos of famous patrons. A picture of a young, smiling Lucia on a beach in Italy invoked the personality behind the place. With this eclectic décor, I had just stepped back into a universe reminiscent of my native Europe. “Can I help you?” came a voice behind the half-wall separating a small kitchen with the dining room. And there she was, Lucia, in her white chef’s apron and headdress. I’d have an easier time completing the Saturday Globe’s crossword than trying to guess her age. “Would you like to sit down, I have

some homemade soup ready,” she invited. In a far corner, a young couple was holding hands and giggling while picking from each other’s plate. Near the door, an older fellow with a tweed cap was scouring the daily pages. The bright echoes of a tenor singer came from speakers somewhere. Fresh homemade soup! What better introduction to the personality of a restaurant and its chef-owner’s? Suddenly, I was transported back to my grandmother’s where as a kid, coming in from a day of playing outdoors, I always found something good to eat. I sat myself in a corner and soaked in the homey atmosphere. A smell of garlic materialized as a plate of fresh homemade garlic bread appeared at the table. Any stress instantly disappeared. I was in this out-oftime place and I was going to be taken care of — or, even better, nurtured. The first spoonful of the minestrone revealed what I had already guessed: flavour without the excess of triggers such as salt or sugar. The vegetables seemed to have been picked fresh from a nearby garden. I decided to go for broke: “Do you have any pasta I could try?” I said, feeling sheepish since I was still digesting my lunch of two hours earlier. By now, I was determined not to walk out of Felicia’s restaurant without having tasted the homemade pasta and meatballs. “I made the pasta fresh this morning” she said. I learned from my hostess that I could have asked for any dish I wanted, and she would have gone back to her cold room, grabbed a veal cutlet, an onion, some Italian parsley and prepared it a la minute for me. I started considering moving out from

Lucia Colonna doesn’t just feed you at Felicia’s — she nourishes your soul with her homemade Italian cuisine. Rob Newell photo downtown, my wife and I, into this neighborhood, envisioning many lazy days of just dropping in at Felicia’s for lunch or dinner. Born in Bari, near the heel of the Italian peninsula on the Adriatic Sea, Lucia came from a family where cooking is a tradition. As such, she learned to prepare food properly from the ripe old age of seven. On a more recent visit, I got to meet Lucia’s daughter, Felicia, who works with her mother. She indicated she was a cook as well and that her own daughter, Elvera, also helped at the restaurant. On that occasion, I watched as several regulars dropped in, some carrying Christmas gifts for the hostess. One of them, a dapper older gentleman, saluted her in a deliciously old-fashioned

way, as “the most beautiful Lucia he knew.” Far from fads, and back-to-the-future of healthy eating, I understood what has made this place a favourite in this diverse neighborhood since 1980: a warm atmosphere and a commitment from its proprietors to use fresh produce, and making pasta or pizzas from scratch. (A gluten-free version of some items on the menu is available.) Simple enough and, yes, a truly unique experience. I may not have felt hungry walking in the place, but I definitely felt nourished by the time I left.

here was a time, not too long ago, that January and February were the quiet months of the year. For restaurants in particular, you could roll the proverbial bowling ball through many a waiter’s section on any given night without fear of hitting a guest. Wine stores were also no stranger to a good hour (or few) without someone passing through. There was always Valentine’s Day to perk up business and wine sales around town, but it was hardly enough to provide the comfort in knowing you could pay your earlyyear rent and bills. But, oh, the times have changed and this January and February is primed to be a hectic time in the wine world, hitting the ground running with the Sun Peaks Winter Festival of Wine (TheWineFestivals.com), on from January 12 to 20, just north of Kamloops in the Okanagan. The particular fun with this wine festival is that it pairs outdoor winter sports with a host of (even more fun) indoor activities like winery dinners, a blind tasting party, a mountaintop fondue dinner and a BC Wine Awards Tasting (hosted by yours truly!) Back to Vancouver, the annual Dine Out Vancouver Festival (DineOutVancouver.com) revs up on January 18, running through February 3. I like how Tourism Vancouver has expanded the festival from its popular $18/28/38 three-course menus (with BC VQA wine pairings) at over 240 restaurants, to add in ultra-affordable hotel stays, theatre events, a big street-food bash and more. I’ll be part of the team on “The Grape Debate,” a UBC-produced event tackling the concept of BC having a signature grape variety, and co-hosting “Vin-

tage BC Wines – How Old Can They Go?” with Road 13’s winemaker J-M Bouchard at Edible Canada. Fun, fun! And then, of course, the elephant in the room: The Vancouver International Wine Festival (VanWineFest. ca.) One of the world’s largest and most-acclaimed wine festivals, it stretches from February 25 to March 3 with California as this year’s theme region. While there’s much more coming your way about this, let’s get to a couple wines for your weekend. As promised, after busting your budget with high-end Champagne tips, these first recommendations of 2013 come in under 15 bucks!

Backyard Vineyards 2011 Nosy Neighbour White | Okanagan/ FraserValley, BC | $14.99 Blending Pinot Gris, Riesling, Siegerrebe and Gewürztraminer from both the Okanagan and Fraser Valley, this wine comes from Langley’s Neck Of The Woods winery, so you can head on over to pick up a couple bottles and poke around the winery while you’re there. A lively, aromatic blend that has enough weight to tackle some good, spicy Asian flavours. You can cheer up any grey, rainy day with its oodles of green apple, lychee, starfruit and anise. BackyardVineyards.ca

Santa Rita 120 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon | Central Valley, Chile | $12.99 | BC Liquor Stores If you like Cabernet flavours like bell pepper, plum, currants and eucalyptus, but sometimes find them too savoury or stemmy, this always-reliable Chilean label provides a juicier version without even coming close to being an all-out ‘fruit bomb.’ Plenty of structure with good acidity and nice, soft tannins make it a great, cheap addition to your repertoire. Gluten-Free Expo: How to go gluten-free without going broke By Deanna Cheng

F

ollowing a gluten-free diet has its costs — you have to give up many of your favourite foods and their substitutes are often more expensive. It can be intimidating for newcomers who have to change personal habits, says Margaret Dron, founder of this Sunday’s Gluten-Free Expo at the Vancouver Convention Centre. “Customers want to know what is the next step,” she says.

Discover the freedom that balance can bring!

The expo is designed to introduce people to new products, provide informational workshops, and ease anxieties for those who have recently discovered they are gluten intolerant. There are more than 100 booths where you can talk to vendors about products and labelling. “Gluten-free customers have 90 per cent loyalty to products,” she said, “because it can get expensive to test and try new products.” The panel of speakers includes Sheila Fetter and Kathy Smart. Fetter is the dietician for Choices Markets, which is a title sponsor of the expo, and is an expert in food labels and labelling laws. Smart is the chef on the world’s first gluten free and vegetarian TV show, Live the Smart Way. Tickets are $9 online or $12 at the door on Jan. 13. With free admission for kids under 10, it is perfect for families to learn together. “Kids have the pickiest palate,” says Dron. At the expo, children can sample different foods and see which one they like. GlutenFreeExpo.ca

hen you first discover that you can’t eat any food that contains wheat, you go through a period of mourning. We all have different favourite foods that we have to say goodbye to — cookies, muffins, pastries, pancakes and, of course, freshly baked breads. Imagine our delight at WE when we received a box of Cloud 9 products. All the cookies and biscotti disappeared quickly in a communal love-in but it wasn’t until the weekend that we could try the New Westminster specialty bakery’s substitute flour mix. The taste test? Sunday morning pancakes with maple syrup. Using a standard recipe and simply replacing the all-purpose flour with Cloud 9’s gluten-free version ($10.75 for a 1kg bag), the result was surprisingly light and fluffy, and even more flavourful than traditional pancakes. Thank you! Cloud 9 goods and products are available at Musette Cafe (Drake and Hornby), The Gourmet Warehouse (1340 E. Hastings), Caffe Amici (1344 Commercial) and Ed’s Gluten Free Specialty (2827 Arbutus.) Meanwhile, every time you buy a Cloud 9 Karma Cookie, the company will make a donation to the Karma Exchange to help send a girl to school.

(2 g) baking soda 7/8 cup (154 g) butter 1/2 cup (110 g) sugar 3/4 cup (135 g) brown sugar 1 tsp. salt 2 tsp. vanilla 1 large egg 1 large egg yolk 250g bag of chocolate chips Optional: 3/4 cup of chopped walnuts, pecans, almonds, peanuts — any nut of your choice Preheat oven to 375°; adjust rack to the middle of the oven. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper. Whisk C9 flour baking soda together and set aside. Melt butter. Mix melted butter together with sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla. Whisk until fully incorporated, add the egg and yolk then whisk again (no lumps!) Let mixture stand three minutes, whisk again — complete this process two more times. Stir in the C9 flour, chocolate chips and nuts, if included. Using a #9 cookie scoop, scoop 16-18 cookies onto the prepared sheets. Bake 10-12 minutes at 375°; cookies should be puffed and golden with edges set. Let cookies cool completely and enjoy! Cloud9SpecialtyBakery.com

No stranger to success Dr. Strangelove invites everyone to free 20th anniversary party

Like any long-running band, Dr. Strangelove hasn’t been immune to the ubiquitous rock-androll issues of line-up changes and addiction. But unlike a lot of bands, Dr. Strangelove doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is one of the secrets to their success. “There’s no rock posturing going on,” Brock says. “It’s fun, silly and tongue and cheek.” “We don’t take the whole thing seriously,” adds Johns. “Like, we’re playing cover tunes.”

by Gen Handley

T

hroughout the longstanding turbulent times in the music industry, there has been something that has not changed. “People love cover songs,” says Sarah Johns, co-vocalist for “Vancouver’s house band” Dr. Strangelove. “The musicianship is there and we do them pretty well. We love performing them — the audience can see that.” “We’re all really good friends and we’re such a tight unit, it’s like a second family,” says fellow singer Kelly Brock, nodding her head. “And we all genuinely love playing music and performing and we get to do it every weekend with each other — it’s G a rre t t H e dLU N d Sa M r I L ey Kr ISt e N St eWa rt not a bad job, you a My a daM S tO M StU rr Id G e da NNy M O r G a N know?” a L Ic e br a G a eL IS a be t H M O SS K I r St e N d U NSt For two decades, V IG G O M Ort eNSe N Dr. Strangelove has survived longer than most bands, playing covers of classic songs from the 50s and every decade since. Movie Review The Impossible: Gripping but sentimental THE IMPOSSIBLE

Starring Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts Directed by Juan Antonio Bayona Navigating the waters of a natural disaster flick can be tricky and Juan Antonio Bayona almost succeeds in avoiding oversentimentality in The Impossible. Set during the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the movie follows the harrowing journey of one family’s survival ordeal. The film, based on a true story, opens with Henry (McGregor) and Maria (Watts) enjoying a vacation with their three sons. The trip quickly turns into a nightmare as the inevitable wall of water cascades over their seaside resort in a terrifying scene. The depiction of the raging wave and ensuing aftermath is harrowing.

Many of the disaster sequences are gut-wrenching; Maria is repeatedly bashed and tossed like a rag doll until left for dead. What follows is a detailed account of the family attempting to reunite under seemingly impossible conditions. Watts and McGregor display some of the finest acting of their Thor careers (sure to Diakow garner Oscar buzz) and 16-year-old Tom Holland is riveting as their son Lucas. However, the film almost buckles under its own weight of melodrama and sentimentality. A weepy, overbearing musical score coupled with the decision to revisit the horrific disaster scene later in the film feel heavy-handed. Though restraint is difficult to convey in this genre, The Impossible could have benefitted from a little subtlety.
