Changing demographics and increasing use of recreation facilities have prompted the recreation commission of the Grand Forks Recreation Department to again consider expansion of the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre. Gene Robert, chairman of the recreation commission, said that the recommendation is being considered because the current facilities are simply not adequate to meet the needs of area residents. Robert cited overcrowding of the fitness room and waiting lists for a number of programs. “The weight room is always crowded and people are often lined up to use the exercise equipment,” Robert said. Grand Forks Mayor Brian Taylor agreed. “You have to shoe-horn your way in,” he said. “Often you get there and you can’t find a machine, or people are waiting for machines.” Both Robert and Taylor believe that an improved facility would contribute to the overall well-being of the community, a goal that they say is supported by the Interior Health Authority. In addition to creating more space for active exercise, Taylor said, “The long-term plan there is to lease out available space to physiotherapy and to attempt to get Interior Health to participate in

the creating of a healthy environment in Grand Forks. I think we have them philosophically on board in that they would like to see this kind of active, healthy community, reducing their costs.” Interior Health had a conference in the Kootenays last year that focused on “partnering with your community,” Taylor said, and though he realizes that they are facing serious financial constraint, he believes that an expansion of the aquatic centre’s facilities might be a good opportunity for such partnering. The last referendum on funding the expansion of the aquatic centre was held during the 2011 elections – it was defeated by 76 votes. “It was stacked up against some pretty big decisions for borrowing by the city that were put forward in the referendum,” Taylor said, “$5.5 million worth.” However, Taylor felt that the community may value the improved service the expansion would provide more than that vote indicated. The 2011 proposal would have added 223 square metres (2,400 square feet) to the facility and increased homeowner taxes in the city and Area D by an estimated $40 and $70 dollars annually. Robert hopes that such an increase would not deter the voters should the project come once more to referendum. “My view is that it was the
rec centre that brought me back into wanting to become more fit,” he said. “It gets you involved in the whole fitness process and then, if you want to make a greater commitment, you can move down the street to the commercial establishments as many have done.” For Taylor, the aquatic centre and its programs are part of an integrated approach to health and wellness. “We’ve created this pedestrian kind of culture within the city, and we’d like to improve that.” He said exercise, aquatics and weight training are among the best means for seniors, in particular, to improve their quality of life. When asked about the need for the expansion, John Mackey, director of recreation and facilities, said, “Twenty people will often show up for fitness programs where we only have room for 10 or 12. Here we are trying to promote healthy lifestyles and we can’t accommodate the individuals. The idea was resurrected again by people who were saying that there was no room to expand.” The recreation commission will meet to discuss proposing an expansion at its meeting on Jan. 17. If it makes that recommendation, then it will begin to look into funding alternatives. Anyone interested in taking part in the discussion can contact the aquatic centre at 250442-2202.

NOTICE OF PRUNING FortisBC Inc. has contracted Asplundh Canada ULC to manage vegetation near power lines within its service area. This work is necessary to reduce safety hazards near electrical wires and to prevent power outages caused by trees or tree limbs making contact with the lines. Clearing around the low voltage lines that deliver power to individual residences remains the responsibility of the property owner. For safety reasons, FortisBC encourages homeowners to enlist the help of a qualified professional when pruning near low voltage lines.

Overall property value in the city decreased from $292 million to $282 million in the last year. 2008 News of a pending sale of the local Pope & Talbot (P&T) sawmill to International Forest Products (Interfor) is being met with cautious optimism. Bidding closed in mid-December and at that time, no other bids had been received.

The recent announcement of a deal to maintain service on the Kettle Falls Railway came after three years of negotiation between OmniTRAX, Burlington Northern Sante Fe, LLC (BNSF), and a number of their customers, including Interfor, Pacific Abrasives and International Reload of Christina Lake. Grace McGregor, vice-chair of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary and Area C director, expressed relief that there appeared to be some closure after years of concern. “Infrastructure and transportation issues are huge in our area to begin with, and so the loss like this in our area would have been another nail in the coffin,” McGregor said. Craig Dohm, fleet manager and spokesperson for Interfor, is happy as well. “It means a lot to our facility in Grand Forks and to our community. We’ve worked on this abandonment situation for almost four years, and we’re happy with the outcome to keep our facility and the other shippers connected to the BNSF network in the United States.” McGregor’s involvement in the process began in 2009 when Kettle Falls International Railway, a wholly owned subsidiary of OmniTRAX, announced that it was considering abandoning the line running between Kettle Falls and San Poil, Wash., the only line connecting Christina Lake and Grand Forks with the massive rail systems in the U.S. The City of Grand Forks became involved at the same time, concerned that any reduction in service would be a serious blow to the local economy. Although no OmniTRAX or BNSF spokesperson could be reached for comment, Dohm indicated that the main concern of the railway was that the number of railway cars required by the shippers was dropping and it feared that re-

duced revenue and increased maintenance of the tracks would make the line unprofitable. “Their interest is in making the line viable,” Dohm said. “What we said was, ‘What you need to understand is that the lumber business is tough, and that’s what two of the main shippers are dependent on, as well as the housing starts in the U.S.,’” He went on, “And over the course of the three or four years that we discussed it, we kept focusing on those things that were going to change that would make it all work. We ended up with a solution that does meet both their needs and ours as we go forward.” That solution consists of a service agreement based on the number of cars the combined shippers are able to fill. Though the details of the contract are private, Dohm indicated that there is a sliding cost scale for shippers. “The agreement has a minimum volume requirement for the year, and if we don’t meet that minimum, there’s a penalty, and there’s various levels where there’s a reduction to the additional charge to the shippers as we increase more carloads shipped. Even those who are infrequent shippers; those carloads count.” With lumber markets improving in the U.S., Dohm is optimistic. “I’m not too concerned about meeting the minimum. The interest on our side is to get to those levels where we are paying less.” The maintenance concerns that the railway expressed from the beginning have been addressed, Dohm says. “It is part of the agreement that they are required to maintain the line to a safe standard ... There are penalties on their side as well if they don’t provide the level of service they are obligated to. It’s a two-way street.” Dohm expressed gratitude on the part of all the shippers for the involvement of the regional district and the city at the beginning of the negotiations, saying that the total support made an impact on both BNSF and OmniTRAX. “Now we are all looking ahead to how we can grow the business on the line,” he concluded.

Grand Forks’ finest not like rest of province The RCMP seems to be getting a bum rap lately. Yes there have been reports of sexual harassment amongst its ranks and reports and allegations of officers assaulting suspects and in fact, just last week, there was an Ipsos Reid poll suggesting that people across the country, including in B.C., were losing faith in the force. According to the poll, 67 per cent of people in the province were “dissatisfied with management’s performance.” Sixty-nine per cent of people polled were of the opinion that RCMP officers were doing a “good” or “great” job but according to reports, that is less than 82 per cent five years ago. There was no mention of a regional breakdown for opinions of RCMP in the province in the poll but based on some evidence, the Grand Forks RCMP is doing a fine job. There have been no reports of local Mounties harassing or assaulting people recently and while there was a report a few years ago brought to the Gazette’s attention, the person reporting would later say that he had met with the officials to resolve the matter. In fact, there have been a number of commendations for the local detachment based on the Grand Forks Gazette’s Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down feature. Local RCMP and officers have been lauded for stopping to help people in accidents and giving tours of the detachment. A local constable even volunteered his time to assist the Grand Forks Gazette with a CounterAttack story it was doing. On top of that, the RCMP are doing the job based on the 2012 Report on Policing: Boundary Regional Detachment, that said crimes throughout the Boundary decreased 19 per cent between 2010 and 2011. Residential break and enters (B&E) dropped by 56 per cent while B&Es to businesses decreased 64 per cent in that time. Assaults in the city of Grand Forks also decreased in that time. Members of the detachment are also active in the community, appearing in parades and at Remembrance Day and Grand Forks International baseball tournament ceremonies. Confidence might be dropping in the force in the country and province but the RCMP in Grand Forks has done nothing to contribute to that.

There is always a danger in making rash generalizations and this became apparent to me when reading over the Grand Forks Gazette’s year in review, last issue. There are some that might think that Grand Forks is a small town where nothing happens, but they would be wrong. Over the year of 2012, there was the usual news, like rate increases and talk of infrastructure. The Grand Forks International baseball tournament took place, so did the Grand Forks and District Fall Fair, but there was also a visit from Premier Christy Clark in early-February. Early-March is a time between winter and spring with the landscape still grey from winter and not quite ready for the green of spring but a major event took place in March 2012. Mother Nature gave a number of showcases throughout the year. There was a lightning storm in late-June but a wind storm less than a month later garnered attention throughout the province as a lot of damage was done and a young life was lost. Falls area once again gained attention of the media and not just local. A girl was found shot on Canning Road in late-September, something that isn’t a usual occurrence in big cities let alone Grand Forks. Another incident that took place prior to Christmas was a robbery that happened at a motel in Greenwood. The hotel employee was forcibly confined but was thankfully otherwise unharmed. “Nothing ever happens in Grand Forks” or “There’s nothing to do in Grand Forks” are statements that are born of ignorance as there is plenty to do in Grand Forks and as witnessed over the past 365 days, there are a lot of events that happen in Grand Forks as well. LETTERS z SENIOR CARE
Broadacres gets more applause Editor: We wanted to express our gratitude to the caring, always cheerful and supportive staff of Broadacres and the way they have welcomed Dad to its “family.” After a lengthy illness, our father was no longer able to live independently and the family decided that moving him to an assisted care facility would be the best arrangement. We saw an article in the paper about Rod Gustafson and the opening of Broadacres Care Facility and went and had a look at the place and found Dad’s home. The philosophy of Broadacres is not so much an assisted care facility as a group home for seniors with varying degrees of disabilities. The assistance is melded with care and respect for their charges. There is time to interact with them, talk to them, encourage them to exercise and do crafts and puzzles. Meals are planned, not only based on nutrition, but on personal likes and dislikes. Coming back from an outing with family members, there is always a warm greeting, a cup of tea and a “tell me about your day.” The fact that Broadacres is private does not equate with pricey. Dad pays $500 a month more than he would subsidized but everything IS included; no hidden extra service fees. This is substantially cheaper than any private facility we contact-
ed in the Vancouver area. Dad is completely deaf, suffers from dementia and uses a walker. If you have a loved one who is like our dad and needs help doing day-to-day activities, but still needs to feel they are independent and live in a home, not an institution, who may find the hustle and bustle of a larger facility overwhelming and noisy, may need a little extra one-on-one attention, go visit Broadacres and see what they have to offer. Dad told us that this was the first time in a long time that he felt like he had a home of his own. Maybe someone you know would feel this way too. Ratepayer group for city Editor: Re: City councillors and their 2011 election promises (column, Dec. 26 issue of the Gazette). After reading the comments by Mr. Ronaghan in the Dec. 26 issue, I would suggest that what Grand Forks needs is a ratepayers’ association. Ratepayer groups work very well by keeping councils on their toes. Why for example, would council authorize the waste of city funds to hire a consultant to report on city streets? Is there no member of council capable of observing the condition of our streets? Why would the works department comment on the

Councils are elected to manage the affairs of areas they represent. There has not been much sign of this happening. W.A. Campbell, Grand Forks
z FEDERAL POLITICS
Forgetting poor Editor: The year Canada turned its back on the world’s poor 2012 is shaping up to be a dark one for Canada’s reputation as a compassionate citizen. CIDA is facing budget cuts, 41 per cent of which will effect assistance directed to the world’s poorest countries. Additionally, according to CIDA Minister Fantino, aid will now be linked to projects benefiting the Canadian mining industry. And in a final, egregious attack on the world’s poor, the Conservative government recently blocked Bill 398, which would have allowed cheap generic life-saving medicine to save millions of people in the developing world, at no cost to Canada. 2012 has been the year the Conservatives laid a swath of destruction to a host of effective and inexpensive aid programs. Is this the Conservative ideal or simply gross mismanagement? Neither is acceptable. Nathaniel Poole, Victoria, B.C.

Regional new year resolutions to make
As a new year dawns, everyone seems to be of a mind to make resolutions. How long do any of these resolutions last before they are broken? Maybe we should try IRENE PEREPOLKIN making realistic lists or ones that will really make a difference. One resolution could be to not make a hasty decision to file a complaint against someone for something that you see as disturbing in your mind, without first talking the time to talk to the person and let them know that you have a concern and find out what the circumstances are first. A follow up with a formal complaint if necessary would save a lot of unnecessary bad feelings. It comes to mind that when we are dealing with the animals in the area, opinions run rampant on what is abuse, misconceived abuse and just plain not understanding of the circumstance. This valley does contain a large number of livestock. To see a horse in a field that looks underweight does not necessarily mean it is being abused. These animals may be part of a herd that is being processed for cull and have been collected or rescued from other areas and are awaiting assessment. Somewhere these animals have gone through abuse, neglect or other and now someone has to take the position of deciding their final fate. People do not do their homework before they become animal owners and once the novelty wears off problems with health, behaviour or care can arise to the point where these animals are no longer correctable and thus result in the need for the “bad guy” who takes the blame. Another resolution may be being aware of the amount of water and the practices you use when watering yards and gardens. We tend to take for granted the water will always flow freely from the tap. Another resolution could be to obtain as much of food from local producers and retailers as possible. This not only is healthier but fresher, tastier and helps the local producer. Do we really need that exotic or out-of-season product that entices us with its perfect blemish-free surface? It may look perfect but what are you really getting from it? Resolutions to purchase from and support our local retailers could be made. If you want people to purchase locally from you, then you should be also be doing the same. Support the Boundary Regional Chamber of Commerce and it will support you by promoting your business. Start by thinking locally then regionally before you go beyond for purchases. There are retailers willing to go the extra mile to bring in product you require, you just need to search until you can find them. You could make a resolution to do your part in weed and invasive species control. If you do not believe in using available products, then make sure your alternate methods are working. Make sure when you are planning your gardens, that the plants are not on the invasive list. Ask your greenhouse owner to see the list before you purchase or one can be obtained through the Boundary Invasive Species Committee. Let us begin to work together to eradicate hoary alyssum and bring back to the valley the lush vegetation it once had. With the construction of a local distillery, the need for a supply of soft fruits will result. Take that abandoned acreage and turn it into something productive and the weeds will be a thing of the past. You could make a resolution to clean up all abandoned vehicles and old machinery and metals. It is not only unsightly but not good for the environment or animals. Resolve to work together to better our community – volunteer when you can and hesitate to judge. Resolve to see how many of the above can be fulfilled over the coming year. My resolution is to attend to any of your concerns and move forward your ideas, to be available to answer all calls and to see that Area D is represented at all times. A volunteer is needed to sit on the recreation commission. Must be a resident of Area D and be available for one meeting a month that is about one hour in duration. Anyone interested call me 250-442-3817. – Irene Perepolkin is Area D director for the RDKB

North Fork residents still concerned about mining JIM HOLTZ
For the Grand Forks Gazette
A year has passed since the ad hoc environmental group Friends and Residents of the North Fork (FRNF) expressed concerns to the province regarding a Chinese company’s mining permit. The permit sought by North America Stone Inc. (NAS) sought to remove 10,000 tons of granite from the granite bluffs 25 km up North Fork Road. Since that time, the group’s concerns have increased. The environmental impact of the mining operation, already a concern of the FRNF, grew after North Fork resident Dana Riester found one endangered plant species in the area. “There are four red-listed species noted to be in the area, and since I had spotted one, the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Natural Gas (MEMNG) consented to have biologist Lisa Tedesco come to the area to take a sample. She also found another redlisted plant, hair bell. The samples were sent to Victoria and confirmed as the red-listed species,” she said. “Since two red-listed plants are now confirmed, (MEMNG) has required NAS to submit a more thorough environmental assessment.” Riester hopes that the presence of the plants will result in the ministry requiring a more thorough environmental assessment. She is worried however, because the company NAS hired to look for red-listed plants (Summit Environmental Consultants) reported there were no red-listed plants. A further concern was raised by local resident Larry Butler over the way in which the company had applied to remove the 4x4x8-foot blocks of granite. In the original permit application, NAS had proposed to use a D7 Cat to drag the blocks along its 425-metre exploration trail to its access
road and then load them on a low bed trailer. The ministry, however, required the company to alter those plans and load the blocks directly onto a piece of wheeled equipment. According to Butler, the road required to accommodate such an operation would require much more ground disturbance than the company had applied for in its permit. Former forest service employee Bob Keep agrees. Keep was for a number of years responsible for the maintenance and construction of forest service roads in the Boundary/Kootenay area. “Solid granite weighs 168 pounds per cubic foot,” Keep said. “The proposed blocks would weigh 10 tons. A very large piece of equipment will be needed to transport these blocks to the truck loading site. This means that the proposed exploration trail will have to beat least 12 feet wide or about the width of most logging roads.” This, said Keep, is of particular concern because the trail is adjacent to a stream bed with several stream crossings. “About half the distance is over very steep, rocky terrain,” he added. The FRNF notes that in the original permit application, the company had indicated that there would be no stream crossings and that work would not occur in or around water. “In the summer, the creek sometimes dries up,” Butler said. “Most of the time it isn’t dry. I was up there Thursday (Jan. 3) and it was flowing even then.” “(MLA) John Slater, (NDP environmental critic) Rob Fleming and (NDP candidate) Marji Basso have all been up there to look at the bluffs and see what a shame it would be to destroy them,” Riester said. “Though with the mining policies and rules the way they are, I don’t know. We’re hopeful.” Neither NAS or Glen Hendrickson, a senior permitting inspector for the ministry, responded for comment as of press time.

With Family Literacy Day in Grand Forks on Friday, Jan. 25, reading, fun with words and sharing ideas will be front and centre. Informal learning is much of what family literacy is all about – life-long learning and the wide scope of understanding achieved through curiosity. According to Sheila Dobie, community literacy co-ordinator for the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL), a favourite word contest and 15 minutes of fun photo submissions will be amongst the events. The favourite word contest will take place in the week’s leading up to Family Literacy Day and invites people to submit a favourite word. See the ad on this page for more details. People can drop off their favourite word entry submissions to either the Grand Forks Gazette office (7255 Riverside Drive) or the Grand Forks and District Public Library (7342 Fifth St.) by Jan. 24. “That’s basically going to be five randomly chosen words and then we’ll put together a booklet of all of the submissions and have those

at the Grand Forks and District Public Library,” explained Dobie. “The 15 minutes of fun are simple submissions as well but this is a photo and a write-up, inviting families to submit ideas that they do as a family for 15 minutes of fun, together,” she said. Amongst ideas for 15 minutes of fun suggested by ABC Life Literacy Canada, re-creating and ending to a favourite book, creating a comic strip about your family, writing a silly story and telling it to family members at dinner time and creating a family tree. The photo and the write-up will go on CBAL’s Facebook page and Dobie says there will be related draws for both promotions. “On the Friday at 2 p.m. at the library on the 25th, we’ll do both of those draws and both of those celebrations around the favourite word contest and 15 minutes of fun,” she went on to say. Family Literacy Day (which takes place all week leading up to Jan. 27 around Canada) is observed nationally to raise awareness about the importance families taking part in reading and similar activities. The initiative was created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999.

Resolution books on shelf
AVI SILBERSTEIN
Hi Grand Folks! It’s 2013 (we made it) so now that we’re here, let’s take a look at what’s going on at the library. Lots and lots of DVDs Thanks to all of you who have been donating your neglected DVDs to the library – we’ve received well over a hundred so far, and we’re happy to see that they are being checked out the moment we put them out on the shelves! Here are some of the titles we’ve purchased or received as donations in the last month: The Saint, Almost Famous, Grease, Roxanne, Fargo, Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner, High Fidelity, Wall-E, Adaptation and many more! New year resolutions ... can be a bit of a challenge. But they can sometimes work. The trick is to choose something small and not too ambitious. Instead of saying you’d like to run a marathon, think about trying to run five kilometres first. For those of you resolutionsetters who want to start small, here are some library books you might be interested in: Cutting Your Family’s CELEBRATE Hair by Gloria Handel, Soap-
REMEMBER
making for the First Time by Linda Orton, Fitness Made Simple by John Basedow. And for those of you who are more ambitious: Building a Straw Bale House by Nathaniel Corum, Start and Run a Bed and Breakfast by Monica Taylor and The Zero-Mile Diet Cookbook by Carolyn Herriot. Adult Reading Club Our Adult Reading Club (the winter edition) began on Jan 8. This year’s theme is “Focus on Fiction,” which includes our selected mysteries, science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, literary fiction, short stories, and graphic novels. Fill out a review form and enter to win one of many great prizes (including pool passes to the rec centre). Some brand new books The Complete Artist’s Way: Creativity as a Spiritual Practice by Julia Cameron, The Intelligent Gardener: Growing Nutrient-Dense Food by Steve Solomon, Women Who Run With the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, PhD, The Trouble with Poetry: Poems by Billy Collins, Carl Sandburg: Selected Poems by Carl Sandburg, The Polish Boxer by Eduardo Halfon, Dr. Fischer of Geneva or The Bomb Party by Graham Greene and The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky are just in. – Avi Silberstein is library director for the Grand Forks & District Public Library Photo credit: Alex MacAulay

Climate change and the watershed How will climate change affect life in our watershed? As I gazed down from our nearby snowshoe route at the skiers and boarders on the slopes of Phoenix Mountain, I thought of how this little mountain is such a great asset to the community. Aloud, I invoked a wish that the abundant snow seen this year would continue, winter after winter. I fear that it won’t be so. As of data available in December, Canada was on track to have the fourth warmest year in Canada since 1948. The United States was again going for a record-setting year, with world data showing the same. Year after year, decade after decade, our climate is warming, largely due to emissions of greenhouse gases and releases of carbon and methane from various sources. The Government of B.C. estimates that the next century will bring a two to five degree increase in average temperature. In the Boundary region and across the province, the increased temperature,

and other changes in climate conditions, will likely bring a diverse range of impacts, which will vary from year to year. For instance, low-lying areas may see increased flooding and water-logged soil, while reduced winter snow pack and earlier snow melt will mean lower river levels in the dry summers and increased forest fire risk. More of the winter precipitation will fall as rain, impacting snow sports and habitat. Higher temperatures in the summer will increase the need for water for people, aquatic ecosystems and irrigation and higher evaporation will lead to even greater water demand. These conditions may have severe impacts on many as-

pects of our lives, in particular agriculture, fisheries, forestry and infrastructure protection. To respond to these challenges, we will certainly need to “think globally” and act to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and dependency on fossil fuels. We can also plant trees and increase organic matter in our soils, which will also help our agriculture and landscaping adapt to droughts and high temperatures. In the Kettle River Watershed Management Plan, we will consider climate change impacts in relation to potential future water demand from different sectors, and evaluate adaptation strategies such as water storage, water conservation, soil management, irrigation efficiency and landscape planning. I will focus on many of these topics in future columns. To ask watershed questions, email plan@kettleriver.ca. – Graham Watt is Kettle Watershed Management Plan project co-ordinator for the RDKB

Witwicki takes first place at bodybuilding event
SHARA J. COOPER
For the Grand Forks Gazette
Sharona Witwicki left Grand Forks in October and when she returned in November, she had a first-place bodybuilding trophy in her hands and a big smile on her face. The 32-year-old Grand Forks resident competed in the Figure Class B at the Sandra Wickham Fall Classic (SWFC) held in New Westminster on Nov. 10. Witwicki says the Figure class is more feminine than female bodybuilding but more muscle is required than in the bikini category. “You have to have nice big caps,” she said, referring to her shoulders and upper arms. She was overwhelmed with her firstplace win. “It was awesome. I don’t think you are supposed to attack the people that give out the awards but I lunged at them and was hugging them,” she said. As part of the competition, Witwicki put on a custom-made swimsuit, 15-cm (six-inch) heels and posed for judges for four different rounds. Getting in that kind of shape doesn’t happen overnight. She started training in 2011 and competed in the SWFC the same year, finishing in sixth place. After her first competition, she trained for a full year before competing again. This includes a diet of white fish and limited protein, and working out several times a day. Witwicki credits her trainers, Al and
Nancy Clark, for her success. “He does my diet and workouts. I just have to follow it,” she said. Nancy is also a bodybuilder so she understands what Witwicki is going through. Throughout the year, Witwicki’s regime consists of six meals a day plus a protein shake. Eggs, oatmeal, lean fish and grain-free bread make up the bulk of her meals. She has to eat every two to three hours. Her workout schedule consists of a half-hour of cardio in the morning, an hour and a half of weightlifting after work and another half-hour of cardio. That only intensifies, as she gets closer to a competition. The last few weeks of training before a competition are rough for bodybuilders. Witwicki goes on a depletion diet to get rid of any excess fat or retained water. She estimates she reaches about six to seven per cent body fat right before the competition. “It’s hard, you’re so depleted without any carbs,” she said. “You’re so tired and cranky.” That doesn’t mean it’s not worth the effort. Witwicki says there is no stopping now. “It’s such a rush to see the changes. I know in six months my body is going to look completely different. It’s an adrenaline rush. To get out there in front of everyone in that suit and pose for strangers,” she said. The SWFC was a qualifying event so this year she’s heading to provincials on June 22, which take place again in New Westminster. If she places in the top five,

Saturday’s result as compared to Sunday’s. “I don’t think the scoreboard showed how we played the night before but it’s always a good sign for a team to follow up a mediocre performance with something like that the next day. It’s a big step forward for our guys in the whole learning process.” Deschenes was especially happy that Kidd netted a pair of goals. “He hasn’t scored in a while so it’s definitely nice to see him contribute on the score sheet. He’s been working hard and he’s getting better just like everyone. Sometimes it’s tough, when you’re not rewarded on the score sheet, to see the hard work you are putting in is paying off. I hope this kick-starts his game a little bit.” The team hosts the Castlegar Rebels tomorrow at Grand Forks Arena before travelling to Beaver Valley for a game against the Nitehawks Sunday afternoon. In other news, the team traded away one of its best players during the Christmas break. Forward Connor Gross, who was one of the team’s top scorers with 18 goals and 17 assists in 31 games, was dealt to the Nelson Leafs on Dec. 30 for future considerations. “We were presented with an opportunity to maybe extend his season and increase his exposure,” explained Deschenes. “I fully anticipate him going on in the next level next year and this was a move that was in his best interests.” Deschenes declined to go into detail regarding the future considerations but said that the team would get something back for next season. The Nelson Leafs won’t be coming back to Grand Forks for any more games this season but the Border Bruins will be in Nelson on Jan. 26 to face Gross and his new team.

Tackling dementia stigma
FRANCES RIESTERER Born: May 5th, 1924 Passed: January 3rd, 2013
Frances was predeceased by her husband James Riesterer and brother Mickey (Ruby) Ferraro. She is survived by her brother Mel (Mary) Ferraro and many nieces and nephews. Frances lived and worked in Nelson for many years before moving back to Christina Lake where she spent the happiest years of her life. The Family would like to thank Dr. Merry, all her close friends and neighbors whose help allowed her to live out her years at home as she wanted. There will be no service as per Frances wishes.
ALZHEIMER SOCIETY OF B.C.
According to a recent poll by Alzheimer’s disease International, 40 per cent of people with dementia reported they had been avoided or treated differently after diagnosis. It’s no surprise then that one in four respondents cited stigma as a reason to conceal their diagnosis, says Julie Leffelaar, the Grand Forks and West Kootenay support and education co-ordinator for the nonprofit Alzheimer Society of B.C. That’s why the society has chosen “See me, not my disease. Let’s talk about dementia” as the theme of the annual Alzheimer Awareness Month, w h i c h r u n s through January Serving the community since 1936

nationally. The goal is to address myths about the disease, shift attitudes and make it easier to talk about dementia, says Leffelaar. “Stereotypes and misinformation are what prevent people with dementia from getting the help they need and stop others from taking the disease seriously.” For example, Alzheimer’s disease is more than having the occasional “senior moment” or losing your keys. It is a progressive degenerative brain disorder that affects each person differently. Sadly, it is fatal and there is no cure. “Although one in three Canadians know someone with dementia, it is not discussed as openly as other chronic illnesses, so the prevalence is there but the conversation isn’t yet and that’s what we hope to address,” explains Leffelaar. The number of Canadians with dementia is expected to double to 1.4 million in the next 20 years, including more than 177,000 British Columbians. John Palibroda November 22, 1924 - November 22, 2012 It is with great sadness that the family of John Palibroda announce his passing. John was born to George and Mary, in Paraul Negru,(Transylvania) Romania. The family left for Canada in 1927 when John was just 2 1/2. They homesteaded in the Prince Albert area of Saskatchewan. “Honest John” as he was know, became a bookkeeper after graduating college in 1945.He worked 25 years for International Harvester in P.A. Met the love of his life, Elsie, in 1947 over a glass of milk, and married her in 1948. Three children followed, and the family achieved a dream of moving to BC in 1971 after John got a job keeping books for Turlin Motors. John loved the property they bought on Ward’s Lake. He loved gardening and nature and is responsible for a lot of the willow trees that ring the westside of the lake. In 1980, John and Elsie moved to Kamloops to manage townhouse units. They retired in 1989, moved back to Grand Forks, and became fulltime grandparents, the best job of all. John was a patient, hardworking, loving, family man. He enjoyed taking hours of video of family and friends and was alway available to lend a hand. He greatly enjoyed playing with all his grandchildren and then later, his great grandchildren. His family was his greatest love and accomplishment. John is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Elsie. Brother Walter (Olga). Daughters, Lorna Palibroda and Brenda Baker (Garry), Daughter-in-law, Lynda Palibroda. Grandchildren, David (Jen), Jacob (Donelle), Clayton (Lisa), Trevor, Megan (Zak). Greatgrandchildren, Addy ,Lucas, Cassandra, Devon & Ripley. And Ex son-in-law Vic (Tracy) John was predeceased by his parents, sister Lena, brothers Bill, Mike and Nick. And by his beloved son, Laurie in 2005. John never fully recovered from the lose of his son, and it is a comfort to the family knowing that they are together again, for eternity. The family would like to thank Dr. Merry, the staffs at both the Sunshine Manor and Ivy House for the care and compassion shown to John in his final years. A special thank you to Julie Chursinoff. Thank you to all those that sent cards and flowers, we are grateful for all your love and support at this difficult time. Finally thanks to Deborah, Everett and the staff at the Grand Forks Funeral Home who were entrusted with all the arrangements. John will be greatly missed by his family but who will always have many fond memories of the great man that he was. And like a good bookkeeper, left us on his 88th birthday, on the dot.

BRAND Our success is all thanks to you.
FORD FUSION
FORD FOCUS FORD MUSTANG
FORD ESCAPE FORD F-150
For the third year in a row, more Canadians chose a new Ford vehicle than any other automotive brand. Ford and our hard-working dealers would like to thank you for that honour. Together, we reached total sales of 276,068* vehicles in 2012. And we aim to Go Further with you in 2013.
*Based on 2010, 2011, and 2012 total sales figures for light vehicles in Canada from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc. (and the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada and Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association).
