Garden trends for 2013

Trends are always hard to predict, especially when it comes to gardening. So much is dependent on factors we have no control over, such as the ever changing and often unpredictable weather. When you look through gardening magazines and look at research reports or just browse the internet for inspiration, some guiding ideas seem to take shape. One trend we noted last year, was a focus on growing fruit and vegetables at home. The ‘Grow Your Own’ movement seems to have picked up even more speed, with the creation of a public produce garden in Cranbrook. This works hand in hand with another trend that was identified by experts recently and can best be described with ‘Planting with a Purpose’. Plants that are both beautiful and useful seem to become more and more popular. From ‘Salad Bowls’, planters with pretty and tasty mixed greens, to hanging tomato and cucumber baskets, even the smallest spaces have plenty of room to grow a bit of food and provide a visual interest as well. A new addition to this segment of attractive and beneficial plants this year are plants from the Brazel Berries series. Brazel Berries come in three varieties, a raspberry (Raspberry Shortcake) and two blueberries (Peach Sorbet and Jelly Bean). The colourful names let you guess that creating plants with breathtaking beauty was as important to the cultivators as having them produce flavourful fruit. Brazel Berries take the edibles out of the berry patch and into landscapes, patios and intimate outdoor spaces. Ready-planted containers take a lot of guesswork out of gardening, especially for more novice gardeners and give immediate results. This seems to support another trend - people are looking to smart and easy gardening and want to forget about highmaintenance yards. This means a lot of people are turning to native and drought-tolerant plants. Native plants as well as locally-grown varieties are already accustomed to the local climate and often resistant to native pests, therefore requiring less water and use of pesticides or other pest control. Drought-tolerant plants allow you to have a spectacular yard while reducing your water bill. Many homes now have rock gardens with drought-resistant ground cover instead of grass in the front yard. Also in an effort to save water, homeowners are frequently turning to drip irrigation systems, either as new installations or to replace older, less efficient sprinkler systems. And while water wasting is becoming a ‘No’, gardeners seem to be saying ‘Yes’ to water features in the yard. From patio fountains to elaborate pond-less waterfalls, the sound of flowing water in the yard is soothing and relaxing. One more trend that seems to be developing is small space gardening and gardening in unusual spaces. Gardens with small trees and shrubs in pots as well as raised beds are starting to sprout on rooftops; and portable containers are populating balconies and patios. Other creative approaches to transforming a plain building into an exciting gardening project are living walls and fences hung with vertical garden planters. One trend that is bringing the garden indoors are air plants. These little pieces of living art are popping up all over the world of fashionable indoor decor. They take centre stage in homes and offices, providing the benefits of houseplants, such as purifying the air and providing oxygen while being extremely low in maintenance. Air plants don’t need soil to grow, as they absorb nutrients through their leaves and roots are used as anchors only. This means, they can grow almost anywhere, from rocks to ornaments or even as a living painting. Whatever your interest will be this year... happy gardening, Submitted by Kerstin

What a beautiful baby!

Treaty Negotiations 1.

2.

3.

In 1982, Canada’s Constitution, the supreme law of the nation, was changed to include aboriginal rights and a unique form of aboriginal interest in crown land. Canadian courts regularly tell the BC government, if treaties are not negotiated, courts will make the decisions. For historical reasons, BC is the only province with almost no treaties. We are years away from a final Ktunaxa treaty, with no guarantee of ever achieving one. A tentative land package was accepted in late 2012, consisting of 2% of the Ktunaxa traditional territory (33,458 hectares); no land will be transferred until a final treaty. If land is transferred, most will remain accessible to the public for recreation. Approximately 22,000 hectares are located in three large rural blocks in the Goat, Flathead, and MadiasTatley River watersheds. The remaining parcels are smaller and are distributed throughout the east and west Kootenays. I support the treaty-making process but do not agree with the lack of public disclosure. Feds fund area cycling society Submitted Today, David Wilks, Member of Parliament for KootenayColumbia, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the Columbia Valley Cycling Society under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF). “Our Government, through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund, is continuing to support communities across Canada,” said MP Wilks. Federal funding of $57,775 will help the Columbia Valley Cycling Society improve their outdoor facilities while creating local economic growth. Upgrades to the trails on Mount Swansea will include erosion repair, trail access improvement and wildlife habitat protection. “Successes like this become possible when user groups partner with each other and with government,” said Adrian Bergles, President of the Columbia Valley Cycling Society. “These funds will further important work towards the Columbia Valley Cycling Society’s, and our partners’, goal of making the Columbia Valley a regional, provincial, and international leader in responsible, non-motorized, trail access for the benefit of all.” CIIF supports, on a cost-shared basis, repairs and improvements to existing community infrastructure accessible to the public. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the Fund in Western Canada with an allocation of $46.2 million over two years. Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.

In Loving Memory

Christina Mary Plonka

March 29, 1943Jan. 14, 2011 Etched in our hearts and souls forever are the vivid memories of a wife, mother and grandmother whose thoughtful words and actions continue to permeate our lives each and every day. We often think of the laughter, enlightening conversations, community involvement, picnics, campfires, new recipes, curling, golf and the love attached to those special timely packages. Though two years have now passed, we have not forgotten. Our comfort comes from knowing that we are watched from Heaven above. Missed and lovingly remembered by Joseph, John, Penny, Gabrielle, Cathy, James, Andrew, Daniel

Obituaries

Obituaries OBITUARY

Fern Denise Phoenix (nee Kjenstad) 1955 - 2013 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Fern Denise Phoenix at the age of 57 years. She passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, January 5, 2013 surrounded by her family, after a brief struggle with cancer. Fern was born at St. Eugene Hospital in Cranbrook on June 23, 1955. She married her childhood sweetheart, Lane Roberts, in 1974. They had four children and worked together at their business Robert's Building Supply, until his untimely passing in 1980. As a young widow, at the age of 24, mom carried her family down a difficult path with strength, courage, determination and a fierce love. It is these qualities that evoked so much love and respect from her family and many friends. On the day her first grandchild was born, she met her second husband Dale Phoenix. This was fitting as her grandchildren were her new beginning. Fern was always active, whether she was playing baseball, bowling or golfing. She always had time for her family and friends, however her true passion was her grandchildren. She never missed one game, concert or birthday party. Her only regret was that she did not have more grandchildren. It was a gift to her daughters to be able to provide her with the love and care, that she so deserved, during her illness. Fern is survived by her husband Dale, daughter Deni (Jeramey), daughter Lindy (Mike) and grandchildren Brooklyn, Jerrod, Wyatt, Kaleb, Laynie and Bryce, brothers Ken (Syd) and Ross, sisters Trudy (Don) and Cleo (Bruce), her step-father Gib, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her first husband Lane, sons Todd and Tyson, her parents Olaf and Jean and sister Carmen. To our dad and brothers, look after our newest angel. Mom has arrived; resting in peace is highly overrated. A memorial service for Fern will take place at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 11:00 am. A private family Interment will take place in Westlawn Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com
