Spilled lumber marks the scene of a collision on Hwy16 between Terrace and Prince Rupert Jan. 7. One man was killed and two injured in the accident which involved three tractor trailer units.
Tractor trailer unit collision kills man and closes Highway 16 for hours By Rod Link The Northern connector
PRINCE RUPERT - Police investigators continue to look into the reasons for a Jan. 7 accident between Prince Rupert and Terrace which killed one man and resulted in Highway 16 being shut down for hours. Killed is Kevin Campbell, 38, who is originally from the Port Simpson area but who had been living in Terrace. The accident took place approximately 70 kilometres east of Prince Rupert and happened
just before 11 a.m.. The highway did open up for single lane alternating traffic during the early evening hours of Jan. 7 once investigators had concluded their immediate work. There was still single lane alternating traffic the next morning. According to police, a transport truck traveling westbound on Highway 16 had jack-knifed, possibly due to icy and extreme winter weather conditions. As this was happening the vehicle’s trailer slid into the oncoming lane of eastbound traffic.
A second transport truck traveling eastbound on Highway 16 subsequently collided with the trailer. This driver sustained major injuries and later succumbed to those injuries at the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital. He was taken there by air ambulance, said police. A third semi was unable to stop and crashed into the first two vehicles. The driver of the eastbound semi was trapped and the Jaws of Life were used to extract him, said police.
The other two drivers were transported to Mills Memorial Hospital by BC Ambulance for treatment of injuries received. Spilled lumber from one of the tractor units illustrated the force of the accident and the extent of what happened. It was snowing and road conditions were poor, says Sgt Pam Scott, NCO i/c West Pacific Region Traffic Services. RCMP officers from both Prince Rupert and Terrace were at the scene as were members of Terrace and Prince Rupert fire and rescue teams.

KITIMAT - The free New Years bus service in Kitimat didn’t see quite as many people as last year. In fact ridership was at a low not seen since 1982. In all 381 people rode the bus during the free service which began at 7 p.m. on December 31. That is the lowest since 1982 when 340 took to transit. That was the service’s second year. When the service first began in 1981, 224 people hopped on board. In the first hour for 2012’s service, 22 people took a bus, which rose to 30 people between 8 and 9 p.m. 75 people were on the bus between 9 and 10 p.m., dropping to 21 riders at 10 p.m. From 11 to midnight there were 13 riders, which climbed to 38 for the hour up to 1 a.m., followed by 163 crowding into Kitimat’s buses between 1 and 2 a.m. Jan. 1.

Another quake, another warning By Martina Perry
The Northern connector
PRINCE RUPERT - A brief tsunami warning for Prince Rupert and much of British Columbia’s coast was put in place after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake shook southeastern Alaska early Saturday morning. Local emergency service and Prince Rupert Port Authority representatives said information was more readily available this time around, following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that hit in October.
The earthquake occurred at 12:50 a.m. about 300 kilometres west-northwest of Prince Rupert, with a tsunami warning quickly following. No large waves were generated by the earthquake, with the Alaska Tsunami Warning Centre saying the waves didn’t pose a threat. Following the tsunami warning, the Prince Rupert Fire Rescue crew and the Prince Rupert RCMP acted quickly, evacuating homes on Water Street and Beach Place and blocking off access to
low laying areas around the community. “We don’t rely on the Provincial Emergency Plan to give us our information. Once the warning takes effect… We put our emergency plan into operation. We don’t sit around and wait for direction like a lot of other communities,” Fire Chief Dave McKenzie said. The Fire Rescue crew and RCMP also opened an Emergency Operations Centre at City Hall for the warning, which was lifted within a few hours.
McKenzie said evacuations were easier this time around because there wasn’t as much activity or traffic in lowlying areas. “It went smooth and turned out to be a non-event. It’s a reminder that people need to be prepared and be able to be self-sufficient for up to 72 hours,” McKenzie said. The Prince Rupert Port Authority also set up a Command Centre at the Atlin Terminal office within half an hour of the warning. Personnel at Ridley Terminals were evacuated.

Here’s how to avoid the flu THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - Up to 10 per cent of the Canadian population is affected by the flu each year. Those who are generally healthy will experience symptoms of varying degrees and recover fully in a week to 10 days. But for young children, the elderly or those with a chronic illness, the flu can be life-threatening. Preventing infection in the first place is key. Viruses are spread through direct contact (within one to two me-
tres, airborne transmission) or indirect contact (surfaces). “Red Cross encourages people to practice some basic health techniques to protect themselves from the flu and to stop the spread of germs to others,” said Dave Adamson, Red Cross First Aid Program Representative. * Wash your hands often, using plenty of soap and warm water. Germs can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours. * Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer often through-

PRINCE RUPERT - Prince Rupert RCMP are warning residents to be aware of an increase in cyber-scams in the community, with many coming from sites on the internet. According to Cst. Matt Ericson, one of the more prominent scams reported is that people have been “locked out” of their computer and receive a pop-up message saying the computer has been frozen by police as part of a criminal investigation. The pop-up may or may not include a list of offences , ranging from music downloading to child pornography, and tells the recipient to send $100 via a payment service to RCMP or other federal agencies to have their computers unlocked. Regardless of what the pop-up looks like, RCMP say they do not come from any such group and affected people should not send money. The scams are known as ransomware or scareware, designed to shock the person into quickly sending money. If you’ve been ‘locked out’ of your computer, it’s an indicator that your system may have been infected with malware and you will need to take steps to address the problem. Anyone who receives something like this is asked to call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 to report it, or contact the RCMP detachment if you have been a victim of fraud. To prevent becoming infected, RCMP advise people to: - Never click on a pop up that claims your computer has a virus - Update your anti-virus software often and scan your computer for viruses regularly - Don’t click on links or attachments in e-mails sent to you by someone you don’t know -Turn on your browser’s pop-up blocking feature - Never download anti-virus software from a pop-up or link sent to you in an e-mail. GATEWAY perspectives
TERRACE - The jobless picture in northwestern BC improved slightly from November to December, reports Statistics Canada. December 2012’s jobless rate was 8.2 per cent, slightly better than November’s 8.5 per cent. The number of people who declared themselves part of the labour force whether they were working or not increased to 42,700 in December compared to 42,400 in November and the number of people working stood at 39,200, more than November’s 38,800. The number of unemployed dropped from 3,600 in November to 3,500 in December. Although the employment picture has improved month over month, the northwest’s 8.2 per cent jobless rate remains the highest in the province with the Kootenays placing second at 7 per cent. And in percentage terms, December 2012’s rate in the northwest is better than December 2011’s rate of 9.8 per cent. But back in December 2011, the labour force was higher at 48,000 people and the number of people actually working was higher as well at 43,200. In British Columbia, employment was little changed in December and the unemployment rate declined 0.3 percentage points to 6.5 per cent, indicates Statistics Canada. Compared with 12 months earlier, employment was little changed, the federal agency added. Nationally, employment rose by 40,000 in December. The northwest jobless rate is not the number of people collecting Employment Insurance. Instead it is based on interviews of people from the north coast to just this side of Vanderhoof who consider themselves as part of the workforce whether they are employed or not.

Marine safety plan
Safety starts with a tanker acceptance program that’s as stringent as any in existence — and includes an independent review of all tankers, weeks ahead of their scheduled arrival. Tankers mooring at the terminal will be double-hulled and no more than 20 years old, and will be required — by independent third parties, before they enter Gateway’s shipping channels — to show a sound maintenance and operational history. As they approach Kitimat, all vessels will be boarded and guided by B.C. Coast Pilots with expert knowledge of our coastal waters. Simulations conducted in varying weather conditions have shown that the largest tankers can be safely navigated without the help of tugboats. Still, Gateway is adding a tug-escort system as an additional safety measure. The Douglas Channel is already one of the deepest and widest inland waterways on North America’s west coast, and Gateway’s tug-escort

system, according to risk assessment data, would reduce the already unlikely chance of a grounding incident by a further 80 to 90 per cent. As another Gateway marine safety initiative, we’re introducing landbased radar to B.C.’s North Coast for the first time. This radar system will be bolstered by extra navigational aids such as lights and channel markers. These enhancements aren’t just for Gateway — they are for all vessels on B.C.’s North Coast. Groups who oppose this project use fear tactics. They’d have you believe an oil tanker spill is inevitable. It isn’t. But don’t take my word for it — visit our website and read for yourself about all the work that has gone into making Gateway’s marine operation one of the safest in the world. Then, decide for yourself what’s true.

Walter Keith Armour May 20, 1929 - December 8, 2012
“To make a long story short,” (his favourite saying) Keith slipped away on Saturday, December 8 with his loving family by his bedside. Born in Carleton Place, Ontario on May 20, 1929, he was predeceased by his parents Walter and Winnefred, and brothers Willis and Weldon. Keith will be forever remembered by his wife of 59 years, Ruby (neè Fillatre), children Cathy, Greg (Lorraine) and Joanne (Ron, sons Ryan and Daniel) Bennato and his grandchildren Lauren Daryl and Carla (great-grandchildren). Keith was a Queen’s grad from 1952 and joined Alcan in Quebec. For over 32 years he worked for Alcan (Alma, Kitimat, Montreal, and Arvida) retiring to Vancouver Island in 1985. A celebration of his life will be held in the spring at his home in Cobble Hill, BC. If wishing, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Cowichan Home Care.

Left to mourn his loss and cherish his loving memory are his parents Kunio and Reiko of Revelstoke, BC; his brother Raymond (Ana) of Hinton, AB; nieces Laura and Hannah; nephew Christopher, and a host of relatives, colleagues, students, and dear friends. Brian was born and raised in Revelstoke, BC and then went on to graduate from the University of British Columbia with a teaching degree. He received a position at Mount Elizabeth Secondary School in Kitimat in 1988 where he ardently and creatively taught mathematics until the time of his passing. His favourite pastimes included playing hockey (goalie), softball, poker, and cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs. A Memorial service was held on December 19, 2012 at 1:30 pm at Christ the King Parish in Kitimat, with Fr. Kenneth Umaowa as Celebrant. The family is very grateful for the compassion and kind support of Brian’s friends and neighbours, the staff and students of Mount Elizabeth Secondary School, the nurses and staff of the Palliative Care Unit of Kitimat General Hospital, and Christ the King Parish. And a special Thank You to the Horianopoulos family for opening their hearts and homes to Brian and his family. In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made to the Kitimat General Hospital Palliative Care Unit in Brian’s memory or to the Brian Hashimoto Memorial Scholarship Fund at Envision Financial - Kitimat Branch.

Discipline problem a royal pain for Kings By Joe Pelletier THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - The Terrace River Kings were the hottest team in the CIHL, winning five games in a row. With the team on the road the whole month of December, eager fans were anxious to welcome their team back and hoping for more wins against Prince Rupert and Kitimat this weekend. Unfortunately the winning ways stopped as Terrace was done in by their old nemesis—themselves. Prince Rupert visited on Friday, desperate for wins as they are cellar dwellars in the CIHL. The win over Terrace was badly needed as it keeps their playoff hopes alive. But you would never know they were desperate at all in the first period. Terrace absolutely toyed with the Rampage, outshooting them significantly. Terrace very much looked like the hottest team in the league with their winning streak looking very likely to be extended. Rupert netminder Keano Wilson was brilliant in net, allowing his teammates to escape down only by a score of 2-0. Captain Steve Cullis led the way with two goals, while defenseman Chris Kirby scored his first goal of the year. It easily could have been higher than that. Inexplicably, the River Kings came completely unravelled beginning in the second period. It was Rupert’s turn to own the ice, knotting the score at three by the end of the frame. Terrace responded with very undisciplined play resulting in frequent trips to the penalty box. They were their own worst enemy, never allowing themselves a chance to find their rhythm the rest of the
RAY HALLOCK / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
Terrace River Kings and Kitimat Ice Demons face-off at the Jan. 5 game in Terrace. The Demons took the game 3-2 in a shootout. night. Selfish and unnecessary chippy play became the Kings focus rather than solving the hot goaltender from the City of Rainbows. Rupert scored the only goal of the third period, taking the giftwrapped 4-3 win from Terrace as a late Christmas gift. Terrace made a much more conscientious effort to remain focused on Saturday night as the Kitimat Ice Demons rolled into town. They looked good much of the night only to have some bad lapses in the 3rd period do them in.
Terrace did a good job of neutralizing Kitimat’s set plays and breakouts while controlling the pace of the game. Craig Vienneau and Steve Cullis gave the Kings a nice 2-0 lead after two periods. The highlight of the second period was a heated exchange of words between Kitimat coach Darrell Craft and Terrace coach Roger Tooms. We’re not quite sure what the argument was about, but Craft seemed very unhappy with a certain towel that he threw at Tooms. Tooms returned the towel and kept pointing out some-
thing was on Craft’s face. Kitimat came back in the third period, thanks to goals by Ian Coleman and Josh Slalina. Slalina’s goal, which came short-handed, was announced as unassisted but everyone in attendance watched Terrace’s Rajan Sangha gift wrap that goal with sloppy play in the neutral zone. Rather than simply gain the zone with a short pass to the winger Sangha dipsy-doodled himself right into his own man, put a Christmas bow on the puck and watched Slali-
na skate in on a breakaway. It is that type of undisciplined play that must drive the coaches nuts. The game remained tied at the end of regulation. Kitimat’s trusty Derrick Wakita scored the only goal in the shootout to secure the 3-2 victory for the Ice Demons. Terrace has three games left in the regular season. They have already secured a playoff spot which is good, as they are about to embark on the toughest road trip of the year. This weekend, Jan. 12 and 13, they have to travel all the way to Lac La Hache and Quesnel. These lengthy road trips are often disastrous for CIHL teams - the distance and winter road conditions are tiring and teams rarely are able to bring their full roster with them. Not everyone can get the time off of work. The players that do make the trip are often “thirsty,” if you know what I mean. That only leaves the Kings with the Jan. 20 home game against Vanderhoof to get their game ready for the post-season. If they remain focussed and disciplined—both in terms of eliminating chippy, rough play and in terms of playing smart hockey— the River Kings have chance to win. When on top of their game they are as good as any team not named Smithers. The Steelheads, with their former NHL goaltender and a host of talented players, are beatable after all, however. Williams Lake stampeded into Smithers and came out with a 6-3 win on Saturday night, ending the Steelheads 33 game regular season winning streak. Odds are Smithers and Williams Lake will meet again in the CIHL finals, but Terrace has a real shot at making some post-season noise in 2013.
Polar Bear dip lives on as a New Year’s tradition By Cameron Orr
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
CONTRIBUTED / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
They call them daring, or sometimes just crazy, but year after year people jump into cold water as a New Year’s tradition. Carl Johnson did his first Polar Bear dip this Jan. 1.
KITIMAT - Unlike past years, there was no official Polar Bear Swim for the New Year’s Day. There was no hot chocolate to help people warm up, or hoselton keepsakes handed out for those brave enough to try out the frigid Douglas Channel waters, which can be cold enough even in the middle of summer. But despite all that, there was a small group of onlookers at Hospital Beach on January 1 to watch a small group of daredevils throw caution, and reason, to the wind. Just before the Sentinel arrived a man and his granddaughter got things going with their plunge. They were quickly in their car and off to warm up in their homes, but that still left Carl Johnson facing the water.
Johnson, an employee of Bechtel for the Kitimat Modernization Project, hails originally from Victoria. Through all of the long hours of work he wanted to get out and do something community-minded and meet with people. The Polar Bear Swim provided that opportunity. It was his first time taking in the tradition of a cold New Year’s dip. We asked him on his way out of the water what it was like. “Shocking,” was the only description he could think of, especially that moment he put his head under water. And in Terrace at Lakelse Lake the Kinsmen hosted their annual polar bear swim. Nine members of the Terrace Bluebacks swim club took part, with coach Mike Christensen noting the team certainly preferred the comforts of the their home base at the Terrace Aquatic Centre pool.

Instead of going to the building on Sunset Drive, students reported for the first time to the community school attached to the municipal offices on Pacific Ave. And instead of simply walking to class, the students were greeted at the door by B.C. Minister of Education Don McRae and Port Edward mayor Dave MacDonald. After attendance students were led into the gym by RCMP officers in red serge, while the crowd applauded their entrance, before speeches got underway. First up was Minister McRae, who thanked the District of Port Edward and the Prince Rupert School District for their efforts. “Schools are important to large communities, no doubt, but they are so much more important to smaller communities,” he said. “A community isn’t a community without small children living there, and parents want to know that there is a place for their children to learn in town...Your community is a better place because of the hard work of all of you.” After thanking all involved, an
