Youngsters are taking to the ice to learn that greatest of Canadian winter pastimes. The Cranbrook Skating Club has started up its CanSkate program for the winter session. The club is the sole provider of learn-to-skate lessons, effective January 1, as the City of Cranbrook is no longer offering their skating programs. Because of this, the Cranbrook Skating Club is offering punch cards to match what the city previously offered. Sessions are underway from 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at the Memorial Arena in Cranbrook.
Merkel steps down as CBT chair C A R O LYN G R A N T Daily Bulletin
Kimberley’s Garry Merkel has announced he is stepping down from his active role as Chair of the Columbia Basin Trust. Merkel has been involved with the Columbia Basin Trust since its inception, being part of the committee which negotiated with the province for the es-
tablishment of the Trust, and then serving as a founding member of the Board. He served as Vice-Chair from 1995 to 2006, then Chair from 2006 to 2012. Replacing Merkel as Chair will be Greg Deck, also newly appointed as Mayor of the Jumbo Resort Municipality. Merkel says he leaves the CBT confident that it’s in good hands.
“It’s been almost 20 years and it’s time to move on,” he said. “I might have stayed another year to help with the transition, but if you help build something and you can’t let go, you really haven’t succeeded. “But you don’t really ever leave the Trust. It’s part of all our lives.”

On November 22, 2012, representatives from the United Church of Canada Kootenay Presbytery met with Ktunaxa Nation elders to reaffirm their apology and throw their support behind the First Nation’s battle to save their sacred land. The Ktunaxa have been fighting to save the Jumbo Glacier area, which they call Qat’muk, from development. In November, 2012, they launched an application for judicial review of the master development agreement which gave Jumbo Glacier Resorts Ltd. the go ahead to construct a year-round ski resort in March. That agreement between the proponent and the provincial government was signed in March, 2012. On November 20 the area was granted Mountain Resort Municipality status. In 1986, the United Church offered an apology for the harm done
to First Nations children and their families — 22 years before the Canadian federal government offered their own apology for the federally-funded residential school program. Frank Lewis, minister for Cranbrook’s United Church, attended the November 22 meeting between elders and church reps, and said the apology was the right way to start off the meeting which took place at the St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino. While the St. Eugene Mission residential school was run by the Catholic Church, Lewis said the United Church did have involvement in other residential schools in Canada. “The Christian churches — most denominations — were involved with residential schools, funded by federal government, to assimilate First Nations people into European culture,” Lewis said.

Stop dementia in its tracks by staying healthy
Part III in our series on understanding Alzheimer’s and dementia Annalee Grant Townsman Staff
As a caregiver, it’s hard not to feel like you’re looking in a mirror as a loved one slowly fades away with dementia or Alzheimer’s. As explained in yesterday’s story in the Townsman about Alzheimer’s and dementia, the genetic risk is not as high as you think. According to the Alzheimer’s Scoiety of Canada, on average five out of every
100 people aged 65 will get Alzheimer’s disease and 95 people will not. For caregivers with a parent diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, those rates change to 15 in every 100, meaning 85 people will not. While the odds are lower than you may expect, there are other ways to prevent brain degeneration as you age. Interior Health offers information on many ways to
improve your brain function and keep healthier longer, with information obtained from The Alzheimer’s Association (ALZ). “When people think about staying fit, they generally think from the neck down,” ALZ writes. “But the health of your brain plays a critical role in almost everything you do: thinking, feeling, remembering, working, playing — and even sleeping.” Dementias and Alzheimer’s disease occur when messages between brain cells can no longer be deliv-
ered. Eventually those cells die off, causing the brain to shrink. “Research has found that keeping the brain active seems to increase its vitality and may build its reserves of brain cells and connections,” according to ALZ. The association offers several tips to keep your brain healthy and active: • Stay curious and involved — commit to lifelong learning • Read, write, work crossword or other puzzles • Attend lectures and
plays • Enroll in courses at your local adult education centre, community college or other community group • Play games • Garden • Try memory exercises Physical exercise can also help significantly. ALZ suggests regular exercise, but it does not have to be strenuous. While your body is reaping the benefits, so is your brain. Exercise helps maintain good blood flow to the brain and encourages the growth of new brain cells. It can also reduce the
risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes. The second most common form of dementia behind Alzheimer’s disease is Vascular dementia, which occurs after a stroke. Preventing head injuries can go a long way to reducing your risk of dementias in the future. Wear a helmet, use your seatbelt and unclutter your home to avoid falls. United Church reaffirms apology, supports Ktunaxa in Jumbo stand Continued from page 1 “I believe that the intentions were good – at the time — but since then we have learned of the harm that it caused,” Lewis said. The November meeting started out with Kootenay Presbytery chair Reverend Keith Simmonds reaffirming the apology and reading out a letter of support to be included in the Ktunaxa’s judicial review application that was submitted on November 30. About 30 people attended the meeting, including Kimberley United Church minister Christine Dudley. “We thought it was important to clearly lay out the background to our statement of support,” Simmonds said in a release from the Kootenay Presbytery. “Our history includes a disrespect for, and discounting of, First Nations spirituality. We tried to eradicate an approach to the Creator we now recognize as not only valid, but a most helpful addition to our own understanding.” Lewis said it was important for the church to support the First Nation, because they unAmanda Peet photo

Amended wildfire hazard permit requirements for Cranbrook Rural Area Tow n s m a n S ta f f
The Board adopted Bylaw No. 2425 amending the guidelines and procedures for issuing wildfire hazard development permits in the Rockyview OCP area surrounding the City of Cranbrook. The amendments will improve the implementation of fire smart development practices and streamline the application process for home owners and developers. Residents of the Cranbrook rural area that live in a high wildfire hazard rated location may require a develop-
ment permit prior to subdividing land or applying for a building permit. If you live in the plan area and are considering subdividing land or undertaking a construction project, please contact the Regional District at 250489-2791 for more information about the wildfire hazard rating of your property and the development permit process. In Support of Clean Bins The RDEK has thrown its support behind the Wildsight Kim-
berley / Cranbrook Clean Bin Project. Wildsight hopes to run the waste reduction initiative in Cranbrook this year. RDEK Requests Road Reopen A letter will be sent to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure requesting that Broadway Road be reopened. The road was recently closed and has resulted in an increase in commercial and industrial traffic in Elko, which is causing safety concerns within the community.
derstand how important spiritual lands can be to a religion.
“The focus is totally on the sacredness of the land. We as Protestants know of places within places where it’s so sacred that it needs to be held up and protected.” Frank Lewis “The focus is totally on the sacredness of the land,” Lewis, who joined the Cranbrook United Church on July 1, 2012, after moving from Victoria, said. “We as Protestants know of places within places where it’s so sacred that it needs to be held up and protected.” Lewis cites sacred areas that are the focus of religious pilgrimages such as the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem for those of the Jewish faith. “That’s our focus — is supporting their tradition, what the Ktu-
naxa believe is a sacred place for them, and they’re our brothers and sisters,” he said. Simmonds said now was the right time to go public with the United Church’s letter because of the Idle No More protests happening across Canada. The United Church’s participation in the judicial review is strictly spiritual, Lewis said. They have no interest in the ongoing political and economic debate surrounding the Jumbo Glacier Mountain Resort Municipality. The United Church came out in 1986 to apologize to the First Nations involved in residential schools, well before Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered one on behalf of the federal government just four years ago. Lewis said the United Church believes in social justice, based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. It was that belief which lead them to look into the damage done by residential schools. “It is with that heart that we investigated what happened, and we were wrong,” Lewis said. But the church did
something else to rectify the situation — they opened up a victim support fund. “Not only did we use words to apologize, but the United Church set up a fund that was used for healing purposes for the First Nations peoples.” Lewis said he appreciates being welcomed onto Ktunaxa Lands and said their contribution to the region needs to be celebrated. Beyond the letter of support, Lewis and recently retired Kimberley United Church minister Barbara Langdon participated in the Qat’muk rally on November 30, just days after the reaffirmed apology and handing over the letter of support. Lewis said it was a wonderful experience. “We have to celebrate all who were there in support,” he said. What was even more incredible about the march, according to Lewis, was that Canadians joined together with First Nations for a common cause. “It was people supporting First Nations,” he said. “It was great, it was bigger than I thought it would be.”
MLA expresses frustration with local government Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett says Cranbrook council should look at ways to save money instead of asking the province for more funding S a l ly M acD o n a l d Townsman Staff
Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett is putting out a call to action for Cranbrook city council. Council should stop asking the province for more money, Bennett said, and instead think about ways it can cut costs itself. “Over the past few months I’ve heard them say they want a new high school – that’s $50 million; a new theatre – that’s $25 million; a new Intensive Care Unit at the hospital – that’s $21 million; a new homeless shelter – that’s $20 million, plus more money for RCMP and infrastructure,” Bennett told The Townsman. “So do I; all those things are great. But there isn’t enough money.” He spoke out on Thursday, January 10, in response to two motions on farm gate sales and policing models that Cranbrook
council decided on January 7 to bring to an Association of Kootenay and Boundary Local Governments meeting for discussion. According to Bennett, it was another example of local government complaining it doesn’t get enough funding from provincial government. “It all comes back to the provincial taxpayer and perhaps it’s time to figure out what they can
do as mayor and council,” said Bennett. “The solutions to these problems don’t all live in the wallets of the provincial taxpayer.” He recommended that council conduct a service review. “They should ask: what do we do now that we can not do anymore?” said Bennett. “I wish they would look after their own responsibilities,” he concluded.

Skills tests could Banned gamblers sue BCLC change next year Jeff Nagel Black Press

VICTORIA — All students in Grade 4 and 7 who are able to are expected to write tests of literacy and math skills this month, but changes will be considered for future years, B.C. Education Minister Don McRae says. Long opposed by the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, the Foundation Skills Assessment tests are being administered in public schools across B.C. The issue is sure to be debated in this spring’s provincial election, as the NDP campaigns to scrap universal testing and look for a new way to evaluate student performance. McRae said Wednesday there will be no change to the program this school year, with students only excused due to family emergency, illness or other circumstances beyond the control of the student. But he said he is open to discussing the program with the BCTF, school administrators and parents for years ahead. “Any time we have a form of assessment, I think it’s really important that after you give it, if you’re going to give it again, you continually look at it to see if it can be done better or more efficiently, and meet the needs of the students, the parents and the educational system,” McRae said. NDP education critic Robin Austin said work is underway with education experts to refine the party’s position on skills testing. If the NDP forms a government in May’s election, the plan is to replace province-wide tests with a random sample of students, and develop a new program later. Austin said one of the problems with FSA testing is the annual controversy over the Fraser Institute school rankings based on test scores. The rankings are intended to help parents track their local school performance over time, but media attention typically focuses on comparing schools in rich neighbourhoods and poor ones. The BCTF continues
to urge parents to bend the rules and pull their children out of the testing program. A letter to parents on the BCTF website argues that FSA tests are expensive, time consuming and “results are misused to rank schools and promote privatization.” McRae said FSA test results for all students have played a role in identifying students who need extra help, and can also help administrators spot performance problems in their schools. But he agreed with Austin that it would not be appropriate to use FSA tests alone to evaluate teacher performance. As a former teacher, McRae said one of his concerns about FSA is the timing. If they are going to continue to be used, the tests should be administered in the fall so teachers and parents have the results in time to work with students later in the school year, he said.
Two problem gamblers have the green light to proceed with a class-action lawsuit against the BC Lottery Corp. after they were denied $77,000 in casino winnings in 2010. Hamidreza Haghdust was denied jackpots totaling $35,000 at casinos in Coquitlam and Vancouver and Michael Lee was refused a $42,000 slot machine jackpot in Duncan because they were both enrolled in BCLC’s voluntary self-exclusion (VSE) program, which is designed to bar admitted problem gamblers from casinos. In its defence, BCLC said one of the key planks of the self-exclusion program is to confiscate prizes as a further disincentive to deter participants from trying to sneak in to gamble. Lee and Haghdust both did get into gambling establishments and, while they sometimes won, they also incurred large losses – $200,000 in Haghdust’s case. They argue it’s “unconscionable” for BCLC to deny their winnings since it was negligent in failing to keep them out in the first place and it may also constitute a breach of contract. A B.C. Supreme Court Justice John Savage agreed the pair can certify the class action suit, which opens the door for other excluded gamblers to add their own claims ahead of an eventual trial. BCLC said it advertised and notified patrons of its jackpot entitlement rules that deny winnings for excluded gamblers once the policy took effect in April 2009. Both plaintiffs had used the self-exclusion program since 2006, before the denial of winnings policy was introduced. Haghdust was caught in various Lower Mainland casinos on several occasions but

Lottery Corporation’s voluntary exclusion program, which attempts to keep them out of casinos and makes them ineligible for winnings if they sneak in. said he was never clearly told when he was removed that he’d be refused any future winnings if caught again. BCLC said the corporation does not intend to appeal the certification decision but maintains it has run the exclusion program properly. “The jackpot disentitlement rule is intended as a deterrent for self-excluded people,” a spokesperson said in a written statement. “External reviews of our VSE program have highlighted the need for disincentives such as these.” More than 6,000 B.C. residents are enrolled in the voluntary self-exclusion program and participants have been denied entry or removed from casinos more than
36,000 times from 2007-11. But many banned patrons are believed to gain entry and gamble anyway. In another case before the courts, a North Delta woman is suing BCLC for failing to keep her from entering casinos and losing $331,000 while she was excluded. A total of 300 jackpot prizes were withheld from ineligible excluded gamblers between 2009 and mid-2012. Casinos initially relied on their staff to recognize banned gamblers but in mid2009 BCLC started using licence-plate recognition cameras in parking lots, resulting in gamblers being detected and refused entry or removed 4,000 times since then.

What we can and cannot say about God Just before Christmas, in the wake of the horrific shooting at Newtown CT, too many religious television personalities proclaimed confidently that the shooting was God’s will. It was God’s just punishment on America because 1) there was no more prayer in school; 2) of the gay agenda; 3) of America’s slide into immorality; 4) atheists were imposing their will on the American public; 5) the supposed war on Christmas; or 6) even because Barack Obama won the election (take your pick). It baffles my mind how so–called Christian leaders can use a tragedy such as this to say that the God of love caused it to happen as a punishment. How is it possible that they think they have a right to make a bad situation even worse for the parents, families and friends of the people who were shot? Why do they suppose that their heartlessness should be proclaimed so loudly in the midst of such pain? They choose selectively from Scripture and Christian tradition to bolster their arguments. Clearly, they leave out any sense of compassion which both Old and New Testaments claim to be a central, defining characteristic of God. These people speak much too confidently about who God is and what God wants. On the other hand, there is a strong strain in the Christian tradition that claims that God defies description. In her book “The Case for God”, Karen Armstrong describes the apophatic tradition which recognizes that human language is never enough to describe God. The God we worship is beyond our understand-
ing, and our feeble attempts will never do justice to the fullness of God. Thomas Aquinas, the 13th century philosopher and theologian, articulated the view that we can only say what God is not, never what God is. He called it the “via negativa”, and went on Rev. Yme to say that human language and human understanding Woensdregt are too limited to describe God in any cogent way. This is generally the approach I take. If God can be described, then God stops being God. God is, in the final analysis, indescribable. God is mystery, not an explanation. Having said that, I also go on to acknowledge that there are times we must talk about both the nature and purposes of God. We can’t simply remain silent. When we do talk about God, we find ourselves using personal language, not because God is a giant person in the sky, but because that’s the only language we can use. When we do so, we must always be clear that we are speaking metaphorically. We can never take such language literally; to do that would be to engage in idolatry and blasphemy. We use symbols and metaphors, images which only begin to scratch the surface. Personally, I am influenced by theologians like Paul Tillich, who describes God as the ultimate, the Reality that transcends and encompasses everything else. God is not a being within the universe. God is Being itself. In the past, people saw God or the gods at work in the forces of nature. Some still see God that way. Pat Robertson, for example, regularly and selectively sees
God at work in hurricanes and earthquakes to punish certain people. But I don’t believe in a God who tosses tornadoes and hurricanes at sinners with such imperfect aim. I’ve seen an analogy which I quite like, of two cells in the human body having a conversation. One cell, an atheist (or perhaps “ahumanist”) cell, looks around and sees nothing but cells. They are born, they die, and that’s it. The second cell says that sometimes it thinks that they are all part of something greater, like one big Cell. In doing so, the second cell is using the only kind of language it has. It projects an image of itself onto a transcendent reality that it cannot fathom. But it is intuiting something about the nature of reality that the first cell denies. This language points to a sense of being part of a Reality that connects and hangs together in ways that we cannot fathom simply because we are caught up in the midst of it. Nonetheless, we sense, we hunch, we intuit that there is something more, something More. I find this kind of approach useful. But it is a metaphor, an image. We can never take this langauge about God literally. We can never speak about transcendent reality directly, but always and only through images and metaphors and symbols. This is why I find the comments made by Mike Huckabee, James Dobson and others after tragedies so troubling. Not only do they add to the pain of those most directly affected by the event. They also say much more than they can ever know about the nature and design of God. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

he United Church of Canada is now entering its 84th year of existence. The Cranbrook United Church building itself is four years younger. As to what actually united to form this congregation requires a look: It begins with John Wesley, an Anglican cleric born in England in 1703. He founded the Methodist movement which in turn provided the seeds for the modern Methodist movement, the Holiness movement, Pentecostalism and the Charismatic and Neo-Charismatic movements. In 1828, the British Methodists and the British Wesleyans formed the Wesleyan Methodist Church which was joined in 1834 by the Methodist Episcopal Church. The Wesleyan Methodist Church in Canada and the Wesleyan Methodist Conference of Eastern British America united in 1874, also annexing the Methodist New Connexion Church in order to form the Methodist Church of Canada. Ten years later that body joined with the Methodist Episcopalian Church, the Bible Christian Church and the Primitive Methodist Church to create the all-encompassing Methodist Church of Canada, Newfoundland (one-half hour later) and, as you may have already surmised, Bermuda, making it the largest Protestant denomination in Canada and possibly Bermuda. In 1925, the Methodist Church united with much of the Presbyterians and most of the Congregational Union and the Association of Local Union Churches to form the United Church of Canada (some did not join due to theological, historical and personal reasons). Take a breath. It’s done. Cranbrook had both an active Knox Presbyterian and Methodist congregation from the earliest days, each with their own building. The local Methodist Church became the United Church in June 1925. The small wooden church on the northwest corner of 8th Avenue and 1st Street, though charming, was suddenly too small for the united congregation. In May 1927, a vote of 84 yays to four nays elected to build a new church as soon as funds could be raised. The Methodists wielded a certain amount of power back east, not least due to the subscription of the Eaton, Massey and Ryerson families and Cranbrook moved along similar lines, with many prominent families part of the congregation. Canvassing efforts proved quite successful and by the end of 1927 a total of $10,000 was subscribed. Fund-raising carried on throughout the following year and by April, 1929, the architectural plans — designed by Henry Morgan Whiddington of Lethbridge, a London-trained practitioner with design leanings towards the Edwardian and Beaux-Arts styles and who resided in Cranbrook from 1928-30 — were presented to the church building committee which approved them. The cost was estimated at close to $30,000 and, with over $12,000 already raised, the congregation elected to move ahead with the project on land purchased the year before. Sadly, the Great Depression entered the picture and fund-raising slowed con-

As the building neared completion in the winter of 1930 it was necessary to sell the original Methodist/United Church in order to meet costs. The former church was purchased by private interests and converted to a miniature indoor golf course. The business struck out and was soon replaced by a blacksmith, a garage, then a stage line office and finally demolished in 1972 to make way for a car lot. Construction of the new church was awarded to the local firm of Sainsbury and Ryan, who had built the Roman Catholic Church two years earlier. The imposing United Church of Canada was formally opened on Nov. 17, 1929. Built primarily of brick in a modern Gothic style, it featured a main auditorium with a seating capacity of 200 and an adjoining social room connected via folding doors which seated over 200 more. An elevated ladies parlour also served as a stage for the social room when required and an adjoining kitchen completed the main floor. A staircase led over the ladies parlour to an additional class room. The basement included the choir room and vestry, class rooms and a furnace room. The building was heated by two forced air furnaces. A new bell, weighing 1,650 pounds (748.5 kg), was donated by an anonymous district lumberman. Plumbing by Patmore Bros, painting by James Norgrove, lumber by the Cranbrook Sash & Door Co. and electric installations by Modern Electric completed the building.
Approximately 900 people attended the two opening services and all welcomed the new building as a notably noble addition to the downtown core and a nice balance to the newly completed brick fire hall on 11th Avenue. That the church was built at all during the opening years of the Great Depression is a testament to the dedication and sacrifice of the congregation. It was the last grand building to be erected in the downtown core for many years and one of the last in which the congregation has remained (the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches being the others). The structure has undergone two notable changes since its construction: the original bell tower has been raised by an additional storey and, in more recent years, the main entrance area has been enclosed to provide additional space, somewhat obscuring the dominant lines of the bell tower. Of the three original churches still standing in the downtown core, the United Church of Canada has unarguably seen the most changes in the surrounding landscape, from a fellow compatriot of the old court house to a sentinel of the perfectly-placed Central Park traffic circle to a lone thing of beauty amidst a sea of asphalt and concrete, it remains a much noticed, much loved and, happily, a much used historical component of the downtown core. janusthenandnow@shaw.ca

KOOTENAY ICE
Benoit traded to Saskatoon on deadline day Ice send 19-year-old to the Blades in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the WHL Bantam Draft on the final day of deal-making TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
Erik Benoit’s time with the Kootenay Ice is over, as the 19-year-old was dealt to the Saskatoon Blades in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft on Thursday. Benoit had requested a trade a few months ago, but got injured as general manager Jeff Chynoweth hunted around for an appropriate deal that would see a good return for the team. However, with deadline approaching, he found a dance partner with the Saskatoon Blades, who were looking for veteran players as they host the Memorial Cup tournament this year. “Erik had requested a trade, which caught us completely off guard, we’ve known about it for a while and I’ve tried to accommodate his request, with the bottom line of always looking after the team first,” said Chynoweth. “It took awhile, Erik was hurt and then everything ramped up as we got closer to the trade deadline. “Ideally we would’ve liked to have got a player in return, but we didn’t have many options— meaning many suitors— at this late stage of the game, so we took what was the best deal and it gives Erik an opportunity to play in the Memorial
Cup again and his experience is something that Saskatoon really wanted.” Benoit came undrafted to the Ice three years ago, cracking the roster as a 17-year-old. The Calgary native played a career total of 151 regular season games, with tallying 59 points.
“Ideally, we would’ve liked to have got a player in return, but we didn’t have many options—meaning many suitors—at this late stage of the game...” Jeff Chynoweth That leaves the Ice with five defencemen and 14 forwards, however, Jeff Hubic dropped down to the defensive corps in Thursday’s practice to cover the absence of Mike Simpson, who was dealt to the Hurricanes on Wednesday. “Obviously, things can change here over the next seven hours, but as of right now, he’s going to play defence tomorrow [Friday],” said Ice head coach Ryan McGill. “He played there right before Christmas, and I think he was okay with that. “Obviously, we like
his effectiveness up front with the way he has been playing up front, but at the same time, I think his versatility allows us to put him back there. It might take him a little while to get acclimatized, but certainly he’ll fill in a good spot for us.” For his part, Hubic is just happy to fill whatever role the coaches need him to. “I’m used to it by now,” said Hubic, who filled the same role last year as well. “Bouncing back and forth, it’s kind of a day-to-day thing at this point, because there’s different kinds of injuries and different situations, so I’m just happy to be playing.” Chynoweth admits he’s still in the hunt for a defenceman before a midnight deadline—either a 20-year-old that was released from another WHL club or a player in any of the Junior A leagues across Western Canada. “”I did file on Ryley Miller, who Brandon released this week and he told me that he’s going to Dauphin, Manitoba (MJHL), and I also spoke to Ryan Dech, who played in Edmonton last year and is playing with Todd Johnson at the University of Regina about possibly coming in, but he’s going to stay at the U of R, which I respect,” said Chynoweth. “I’ve been trying to

“I know, for myself, I haven’t slept very well the past few days, but you never really know what’s going to happen.” Chynoweth said there wasn’t much of any horse-trading for his old-
est pair of WHL veterans. “Nothing materialized in the last two days, even remotely offered for either of the players, which is surprising to me,” said Chynoweth. “It doesn’t upset me to keep
them both, they’re quality players and quality individuals and I think their experience and leadership will be invaluable as we play 20 of our final 30 games on the road.”
Czerwonka joins U of R Cougars TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
Former Kootenay Ice captain Drew Czerwonka has been added to the men’s hockey roster with the University of Regina Cougars where he will play under his former WHL assistant
coach. “Drew is a complete player and a tough guy to play against,” said Todd Johnson, who spent two years in an assistant coaching capacity with the Ice, before moving up a head coaching gig with the
Cougars. “He’s a player that’s able to play in all situations and I expect him to do that for us. He brings a wealth of skill and experience to the lineup and I expect him to be a leader on this team in the very near future.”
Avalanche host Camosun College as season resumes TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
There’s an Avalanche warning in the Kootenays, but not of the snowy variety. Both volleyball teams with the College of the Rockies are ready to come out swinging for their second half of the season as they host the visiting Camosun College Chargers this weekend. Camosun was the final stop of their last road trip before the Christmas break. The Chargers ended up sweeping both Avalanche squads.
Both teams are hoping for a little more success this time around, especially on their home court. “We ran into a very good team—a team that’s well-coached and arguably the best match I’ve seen a college team play on the Saturday, down in Victoria,” said men’s coach Steve Kamps. “When we played them, they couldn’t do anything wrong and they’re a good team, and we’re going to have to be better this time around. “The nice part is, on the Sunday, we were
competing with them, it was a close match, narrowly losing in the fourth set last time against them and that was our fourth game in four days, so I think we feel good about some thing and they have to jump on the bus trip this time and things should be a lot different in our gym.” The ladies squad knows they’re in for a tough fight, but they’ve learned a few things through their two losses, said Bendkowska. “That team is tall, they hit every ball, but they are also a little bit slower, because of their
height,” said Bendkowska. “We know their weaknesses, so we’re going to going to try and take advantage as much as we can to place the ball in those empty spots and play smart. “We’ve worked a lot on defence this week, so the girls know exactly how to play against them because they are going to hit at us, and we need to be ready to dig everything.” Both teams have worked off some of the Christmas turkey this past weekend, competing in an exhibition tournament in Lethbridge.
The ladies got three wins, and some confidence under their belts, while the men were beaten in all four matches. Kamps takes a philosophical view of the losses, as exhibition gave him a chance to play some of his less experienced players and try some new things. “We had control of some [matches], then made some subs and tried some different things, then ended up losing them, but really, at the end of the day, exhibition isn’t about wins and losses,” said Kamps.
“Overall, I’m happy. I think we grew as a team and learned some things about ourselves and just coming prepared to play all the time is the lesson that we learned there.” Bendkowska and her assistant, Brian Millis, were happy with the way the ladies shook off their rust by winning three games in four matches. “The girls had a very positive weekend after the break,” said Millis. “They had a chance to clear their minds after the first semester and come out strong and they played really well.” Millis added that
every other Pacwest team played this past weekend—except for them. “Every team in our league was playing, except for us, so it was good to get those touches in before playing a league game this weekend,” Millis said. The volleyball action begins on Friday at 6 p.m. at the College of the Rockies gym, starting with the ladies and followed by the men two hours later at 8 p.m. Saturday action begins at 1 p.m. for the women and 3 p.m. for the men.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You typically are very verbal; however, today you might want to consider choosing your words carefully. You don’t have to change the message, but how you say it could make all the difference. Brainstorm and share with a respected associate. Tonight: In the limelight. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Keep reaching out to others -perhaps even an expert or two. The more information, opinions and perspectives you hear, the stronger and more informed your decisions will be. A new beginning becomes possible involving a trip. Tonight: Let your imagination rock and roll. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You no longer can avoid dealing with a partner or having a key discussion. It seems that many people have a different perspective or understanding from you, and they feel the need to put in their two cents. Stick to your guns. Tonight: Togetherness -still, keep it exclusive.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Recognize that the Force is not with you, but is with someone else. You quickly will be able to discern who seems to have it all together. Consider taking off for a fun day without your normal concerns. You’ll feel refreshed as a result. Tonight: Go with someone’s suggestion, if you desire. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Communicate your expectations, and expect to get the same back. Open up to new possibilities. You could find that the suggested path might be the best way for you. A new situation evolves as well, though it does have an unstable factor. Tonight: Choose something easy. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your creativity comes forward, and it might surprise you. The result of a discussion will create a new beginning. Listen to news, and remain forward-looking. You set the pace for others far more than you realize. A child or loved one could be quite demonstrative. Tonight: TGIF. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Deal with a family member
For Better or Worse
head-on. You might not appreciate this person’s attitude, even if you can tell that he or she is making an effort. Be smart, and say very little that could be construed as negative feedback. Work on your attitude as well. Tonight: Mosey on home. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Communication reveals much more of your feelings, as well as someone else’s. You finally feel as if you are in a grounded place. Let a discussion continue, and consider making it an early day. Tonight: Share the evening with favorite people. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You could be drawn in to what seems like a great idea, and it might very well be one. Just be realistic about whether you can afford a loss. Establish your bottom line, and you will be able to relax. Don’t allow someone to push you too hard. Tonight: Let go of this week’s stress. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You could be delighted by a new opportunity that comes down your path. You won’t even consider whether you should say
yes or no; you simply will leap into action. Loosen up and be more upbeat. Others might be surprised to meet the new you. Tonight: The fun surrounds you. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You might want to understand what is happening behind the scenes. The best method is to say little and remain sensitive to someone’s energy. Let an older relative know how much you appreciate him or her. Do not hold back. Tonight: Meet a friend, but head home early. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You can’t help but win. No matter what you say and what choices you make, you’ll come out ahead. At times, you have a way of pushing others away, but not right now. Someone from a distance touches you with his or her inquiry. Tonight: Find a reason to celebrate. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My husband and I recently moved to the city where my husband’s family lives. One of his brothers has been married for two years. (It’s his third wife.) “Pete” is a likable guy who often arranges fun activities. Pete moved into his wife’s house when they married. She had a teenage daughter, a dog and a cat. Pete got rid of all three. He is obsessive-compulsive and doesn’t like to clean up after pets and couldn’t tolerate his wife’s daughter. The girl now lives with her father, who isn’t a great parent, so she sometimes sleeps in the park. We don’t know what he did with the animals. Pete also made his wife sign over her house because she wasn’t paying her portion of the mortgage and bills. Pete’s wife confides in me, and while she accepts everything he does, she is miserable. My husband and I feel guilty hanging out with Mr. Good Times when he is creating so much pain for his wife and stepdaughter. How do we continue accepting fun invites when we know he is such a control freak? I realize I can’t interfere in his marriage, but I don’t want him to think we condone his treatment of his wife and stepdaughter. The fact that Pete sees nothing wrong with his actions is disturbing. What can we do? -Worried Sister-in-Law Dear Worried: Abusers often come across as charming guys. But we don’t know what’s really going on. The pets could be fine, the daughter might be OK if her biological father stepped up, and if Pete’s wife wasn’t paying the mortgage, having the house in his name may have been justified. However, all of these things together make Pete’s behavior questionable, if not pathological. If he is forcing these changes onto his wife and she feels trapped, please encourage her to call the Domestic Violence Hotline (thehotline. org) at 1-800-799-SAFE. And speak up. Tell Pete you find his behavior disturbing. Dear Annie: My sister and I are trying to plan a nice dinner for our parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. We would like to invite about 30 close family members and friends to a restaurant that our parents like, but footing the bill for everyone’s meal would be difficult. Would it be OK to add this sentence to the invitation: “We chose a restaurant that we think is affordable to all. Gifts are not required. Your presence will be gift enough.” Or do you have another suggestion? -- Want To Do the Right Thing Dear Want: In other words, you want the guests to pay for their own meals. That necessitates rephrasing the entire invitation because you are asking them to host themselves. Try this: “Please join us in taking our parents out to their favorite restaurant.” Dear Annie: “A Guy in Virginia” asked whether it was OK to look at a woman’s tattoo. I’d like to take this opportunity to clarify sexual harassment. It has a very strict legal meaning at the federal and state level in order to regulate how people behave in the workplace. It has nothing to do with a guy checking out some woman in the grocery. It’s sexual harassment if the person in authority says, “If you don’t sleep with me, I will fire you” -- or not give you a raise, flunk you, etc. It’s sexual harassment if it creates a hostile work environment -- a pattern of looking at pornography at work, making lewd comments or sexist jokes, or displaying suggestive calendars or photos. It is not sexual harassment to say, “I like your hair,” although a pattern of personal remarks that make someone uncomfortable would eventually constitute a hostile work environment. It is NOT about what happens outside the workplace. So if you don’t want someone to stare at you, don’t wear revealing clothes, get a tattoo or wear pink hair. -- BTDT in the Northeast Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Criminal record suspensions plummet as new pardon rules, higher fees, take hold Canadian Press
OTTAWA — The number of former offenders applying to have their criminal records sealed has plummeted since the Conservative government brought in tough new rules and quadrupled the application fee. Figures obtained by
The Canadian Press show that total applications are down more than 40 per cent. And fewer than 3,700 record suspensions were granted between March and December 2012, compared with more than 24,000 in the last full year before Ottawa began overhauling
the pardons system. The changes all stem from the 2010 revelation that serial predator Graham James, a former junior hockey coach, was quietly granted a routine pardon in 2007. James has since been convicted of sex assaults on two other young hockey prospects who
were once under his influence, including NHL star Theoren Fleury. Critics say the Harper government has gone too far with its pardon changes and is keeping thousands of law-abiding former offenders from moving on with their lives and fully contributing to society.
SPCA seizes 45 dogs from Victoria dog ‘hoarder’ Canadian Press
VICTORIA — The SPCA has seized 45 dogs from a man the society describes as a hoarder in the Victoria-area community of Brentwood Bay.
The miniature poodle-bichon frise cross dogs include adults and puppies, and some of the adults are believed to be pregnant. Society official Lorie Chortyk says the man

hoarded the dogs and allowed them to breed unchecked in his home without giving them proper care, putting their welfare in jeopardy. She says the SPCA had concerns about the man in the past and tried to work with him, and although he gave up
a few dogs to a rescue group he was reluctant to surrender any more. The dogs have been taken to the SPCA branch in Victoria for examination and treatment but Chortyk says they won’t be offered for adoption until ownership issues are sorted out.

smash into Earth in about 20 years. They got a much better look at the asteroid when it whizzed by Earth on Wednesday. They recalculated, determining it was not on path to hit Earth on April 13, 2036 as once feared. At more than 1,000 feet wide, the rock could do significant damage but not cause worldwide extinctions. About nine years ago, when astronomers first saw the asteroid, they thought there was a 2.7 per cent chance that Apophis would smack into the planet. Later, they lowered the chances. The asteroid is named after an evil Egyptian mythical serpent. Donald Yeomans, who manages NASA’s asteroid-tracking office, said now the asteroid will not get closer than 19,400 miles.

NEWS Amber Alert issued for pregnant Saskatchewan girl Katelyn Mosquito allegedly taken by boyfriend Canadian Press
MAPLE CREEK, Sask. — A Saskatchewan family says two masked intruders burst into their home and demanded a pregnant teenager pack some clothes and leave with them. RCMP in Maple Creek have issued an Amber Alert for Katelyn Mosquito, a 14-year-old who is eight months pregnant. Both her relatives and police believe she is with her boyfriend, 16-year-old Jonathan
14-year-old Katelyn Mosquito
Hansen. Katelyn was at her father’s home in the southwestern community, watching a movie and reading books on pregnancy, when there was banging on the door about 11 p.m. Wednesday, said her sister Stana Anaskan. Anaskan said she opened the door and the two people wearing ski masks pushed themselves inside. She thought they were there to rob the home.
“Is Katelyn here?’’ asked one guy who had a small wooden bat. Anaskan said she recognized the voice. He then walked through the home and found Katelyn in another room. “Get your stuff. Make it quick,’’ he told her. Anaskan said the person pushed her sister out the door, but didn’t threaten anyone. She said the other intruder was also holding some sort of weapon but left without saying a word.

As soon as the two left, she called police. Marlene Mosquito said her daughter and Hansen had been in a relationship for about a year. The girl fell pregnant when she was 13. Mosquito described Hansen as verbally abusive and possessive. He and his mother wanted Katelyn to live with them and the two families argued about it, she said. Katelyn had been staying with Hansen, but Marlene Mosquito said she convinced her daughter to return home with her Monday following a medical appointment in Medicine Hat. She then persuaded her daughter to break up with him. “She agreed, but she said, ‘I’m scared of him, Mom. He’s always yelling at me.’’ A few hours before the girl was taken, messages were posted on a Facebook page belonging to a Katelyn Mosquito. The page contains the same photo that was issued by police. A blackand-white sonogram of an unborn child is displayed as a profile picture. “I wish someone could love me,’’ wrote the user, declaring her new status as single. “I love Katelyn more than my own life but IM not going to keep letting her family drive me insane,’’ replied someone using the name Jonathan Hansen. Katelyn is the youngest of Marlene Mosquito’s nine children. “I just want her home. She’s my baby.’’ She said she doesn’t think Hansen would harm Katelyn because she’s carrying his child. But she’s also worried he might resort to violence over the thought of losing her. “I’m thinking he’s thinking ... if he can’t have her nobody can have her.’’ She also hopes the stress of the situation doesn’t cause Katelyn to go into early labour. Her baby boy is due Feb. 27, but a doctor has said the baby has dropped and could come at any time, the mother said. Anaskan said her sister may have had a contraction about 90 minutes before she left the home. Katelyn once clutched her stomach in pain but seemed fine after that. Another sister, Amy
Jonathan Hansen
Mosquito, 16, was also in the home at the time. She was the subject of a missing person search in 2010. At the time, RCMP said the girl was found safe in a home in the Maple Creek area. Sgt. Paul Dawson, an RCMP spokesman in Regina, said police are doing everything they can to make sure Katelyn is returned home safely. “The element of danger is that she was forcibly removed from the residence and we are fearful that harm may come to here. That is why we issued the Amber Alert,’’ he said. “Had it been a case where two people were going off, it wouldn’t have been an Amber Alert.’’ Police describe Katelyn as aboriginal, fivefoot-three and 160 pounds. She is believed to be wearing pyjama-type pants and an orange hoodie with the words “Maple Creek Composite High’’ on it. Hansen is a Caucasian male about fivefoot-11, 150 pounds and has light brown hair and blue-grey eyes. He is also from the Maple Creek area and has modifications stretching both earlobes. Police initally said the suspect may have been heading to Alberta in a green 1995 Ford Escort owned by one of his relatives. But on Thursday afternoon RCMP said they had found the car abandoned in the Maple Creek area. The alert was issued as southern Saskatchewan braced for a second blast of winter this week. Environment Canada issued a blizzard warning for a region stretching from the Alberta boundary to Fort Qu’appelle because of a system that is also expected to bring frigid temperatures and gusting wind.
