The norovirus that is sweeping across Canada closed a general medicine unit at Ridge Meadows Hospital through the past weekend. The notorious bug was found to have infected patients here on Saturday, and the unit, which provides acute care, did not re-open until Wednesday. Patients in the unit stayed, but there were no new admissions. Hospital staff was divided between those who worked in the unit, and may be infected, and the rest who were not allowed in the unit. The unit also received cleaning under the supervision of enhanced infection control staff. Fraser Health spokesperson Tasleem Juma said the ward only reopened once staff were confident that all transmission of the virus has been stopped. see Norovirus, p14

A notorious Maple Ridge landlord, accused of plotting a murder last year, claims he is getting out of the property rental business, while still facing a string of civil lawsuits as banks and building stratas try to recoup money he owns them. “I am selling everything, just keeping my house,” said Jagdev

‘Jack’ Singh Athwal. “I’ve had enough of the rental business.” Athwal claims the lawsuits are all part of a plot to put him out of business. In 2012 alone, Scotia Mortgage Corporation, Super Save Disposal, CIBC Mortgage, three strata councils, Khalsa Credit Union and Gordon Towers filed civil suits against Athwal. The strata council of Gordon Towers – the high-rise building at the centre of the murder plot allegations – has also asked the courts to allow the sale of one of Athwal’s

units without his consent in an effort to recover money he owns them. Police allege Athwal counselled one of his tenants to murder a man who managed the high-rise, Athwal located on 222nd Street at Dewdney Trunk Road. Athwal claims he is selling all the properties he owns in Maple Ridge,

including six units in Gordon Towers. A council report pegged the number of rental units he owns in Maple Ridge at 30. “I’m not feeling very good,” said Athwal. “I am getting pretty old. My health is not good.” The District of Maple Ridge has yet to clarify why Athwal has continued to rent out apartments and homes without a business licence. t’s a frenetic pace these days in Zellers, behind the grimy glass doors plastered with red, yellow and black signs blasting “Everything 40/70% off lowest ticketed price,” “Nothing held back,” “Closing! Total liquidation.” While a security guard keeps watch, cash registers are humming as shoppers line up and scoop up bargains and march out the door with deals on Tide laundry soap, dish washing liquid and windshield washer fluid. Zellers, a fixture of shopping in Maple Ridge since Haney Place Mall opened, is closing its doors for good Feb. 11, in preparation for major building renovations, a prelude to the arrival of the American retail giant Target. Gwen Epp is as busy as ever, as a quick pace is needed to keep up and move about the store in its’ last month. “I opened the store [in 1981] and now I’ll be closing the store,” she says during her lunch break in the mall’s food court. “I’ve been here for 31 years and this company has been very good to me.” Epp, 51, started as a clerk in the fabric section, back when the store carried fabrics, moved up to become shipper and receiver in the warehouse and now finishes her career with the Canada-wide chain that’s soon to disappear from the retail landscape, as manager of the light fixtures department. During that time she raised two children, with the full support of her employer. Any time she had a family issue, no problem, she could attend to family business while coworkers and managers covered for her. “I’m really impressed with that. They believe in families first.

Family is also how she describes her coworkers, and the customers who traipsed in faithfully for three decades. “We have a lot of regulars who came into our store and they are so sorry to see us go. They miss the restaurant. They’re upset.” Epp isn’t the only longtime employee. Janet Drinkle, 62, and Flo Horacsek each worked more than 30 years at Zellers. Drinkle worked in the shoe department, was known as the “shoe lady,” and had planned on retiring on last year anyways. She wants to do some volunteering, but might work at Target part-time, if she gets hired. “Most of the staff have been here a long time,” says Horacsek who’s a sales associate in men’s wear. “They always try to work with you and they treat you like family. I’ve not got

not certain if any ceremonies are planned. One of the store’s features was the restaurant, a holdover from the post-war years when the department store was king. The restaurant was also the location of the Haney Senate – a handful of oldtimers who gathered

every week for coffee and to trade tall tales. The old guys, though, didn’t just solve world problems during their coffee-andgab sessions. They also pooled their Zellers points and used them to buy toys for Ridge Meadows Hospital. Once the liquidator clears out the unsold goods after the store closes, construction crews move in and expand the store and turn it into a Target, ready for next Christmas’s shopping season. The Minneapolis-based chain, is doing the same to another 123 Zellers locations across Canada. After that, only three Zellers will remain, in White Rock, Toronto and Montreal. How many of the 80 people who now work at the Haney Zellers will turn up at Target remains to be seen. Most aren’t saying much about what their plans are, says Epp. Some are retiring. Some are moving away. Some are finding new jobs. As a new company starting a new business, Target can start with new employees. It didn’t take over the Zellers business, just inherited the leasing locations. Target, however, has promised interviews for all current Zellers employees. For Epp, when one door closes, another will open, somewhere. She’s sad the store’s closing, but excited about what may follow in her life. “Myself, I think I might go back to school and upgrade myself. “As my friends put it, there’s life after Zellers.”

A would-be thief got the surprise of his life when he was arrested by an off-duty Ridge Meadows RCMP officer early Wednesday. Around 2:30 a.m., Const. Ryan Henley was sleeping in his home when the family dog woke the household up by barking at a suspicious person outside. Henley spotted a man in a car, who fled when he was confronted by the cop. Dressed in his pyjamas and in bare feet, Henley ran after the man and arrested him a short distance away. Local police were called and the man was taken into custody. “As sworn police officers, we are always ready to react to a criminal situation. Constable Henley’s successful apprehension of this suspect may lead to the prevention of other citizens being victims,” said Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. She added that since the incident did not take place in Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows, police do not know if the suspect is still in custody.

INDUSTRY STANDARDS When you’re paying someone to repair your vehicle, you need to know what you’re paying for. Do not assume that all auto repair facilities are created equal. There are a number of two year Specialist Auto Repair Technician courses in everything from Brakes to Tune ups but there is just one type of licence for the complete full service auto repairs. It is the cream of the crop and the most difficult to obtain. Only Licenced Auto Repair Technicians can become Air Care Technicians, after passing some very difficult examinations and after one or more prerequisite training courses. If you are looking for the best in automotive diagnostics ask if that person is an Air Care Technician. If not, keep looking. Provincial Motor Vehicle Inspectors must be Licenced Auto Repair Technicians. The reason is only that a mechanic or technician certified to work on the entire vehicle can inspect the vehicle properly. Licenced Full Service Auto Technicians/Mechanics are trained in all of the systems of your vehicle, such as the brakes, electronics, suspension, drive line, coolant - A/C., engines, computer diagnostics, etc. The most important part of this training on these individual systems is not how they work, but rather how they interact with each other and which system has priority. A specialist can tell you exactly what is wrong with the part of your vehicle which they specialize in, but they cannot inform you on how that one part of the vehicle fits in to the whole picture. It just may be that there are multiple problems with your vehicle and you need to know the whole picture so you can make an informed decision on where best to spend your money. But topography could prevent a continuous route along the shore. “It’s worth the conversation,” he added. Slaco said the company plants 1.6 million trees yearly. Long-time resident Eric Phillips added that there used to be a public wharf at the foot of Princess Street, as well as a road through the mill grounds, allowing access from the river to Kent Street. The mill has always had a presence in the community, he Dinner added, pointing out that Hammond community centre was made from the lumber from the mill. “I know a lot of people who retired from the mill, who worked at the mill. The mill’s been a boon to the community since it opened in 1908.”

Interfor’s Hammond cedar mill has some spare property that could be put up for sale, if there’s interest. One lot near the mill’s office is idle and vacant on Maple Crescent, and could go on the market. If the offer is right, the company could consider moving its office and parking lot, freeing up two more lots, for a total of 2.4 acres. Then there’s some waterfront property, about 11 choice waterfront acres the company no longer needs farther up the Fraser River, just west of the Port Haney West Coast Express station. Interfor vice-president Ric Slaco told Maple Ridge council about the properties at its Monday meeting as part of an update and a new attempt to connect with its neighbours. “We’ve had a pretty rough last couple of years,” Slaco said.

Conditions remain tough in the forest industry for cedar, despite the latest uptake in the construction lumber market. Despite marginal returns, Interfor has poured millions into the mill, $7.8 million in the last three years, to stay modern and efficient. The mill is 102 years old, employs about 165 people and is the largest cedar mill in the world, supplying about 15 per cent of the global market. While it’s modern, it also operates in a highcost environment, produce using smaller logs and has to compete with non-wood products. “We can’t continue to stay idle and remain competitive,” Slaco said. While there are no guarantees, the company has no plans to move or shut down the mill. But it does want to operate efficiently, dispose of its unused property and connect with its host community. Interfor’s presentation came at a propitious time. An area plan for Hammond that will determine the future residential, industrial and

NHL pie crumbs Now that the millionaires and the billionaires have resolved how they will split up their pie, the NHL once again expects sports fans to forget the past seven hockey-less months and come crawling back. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in August he was confident the NHL would recover from the lockout because, “we have the world’s greatest fans.” Apparently, having the world’s greatest fans means having the ability to walk all over them. Sports fans across the Lower Mainland have long supported NHL hockey with an intensity normally reserved for religious fundamentalism. But with talks of fan boycotts, certainly some sports fans are tired of being disrespected by a league that takes their support for granted. Of course, the NHL isn’t only game in town. Many other professional sports organizations, such as the Vancouver Giants, Vancouver Whitecaps, and B.C. Lions, offer as good or better bang for your sports entertainment buck. And every time the NHL can’t get their act together, an increasing number of local sports fans discover there is more out there than just the Vancouver Canucks. Whether or not the NHL can recover this time remains to be seen, however. But as NHL hockey returns to the arenas and television screens, spare a thought for those who have been hurt most by the lock out. Local restaurants, pubs, sports bars, memorabilia shops, and cab drivers. The people who own and work at these local businesses are your neighbours, family, and friends. Because the NHL and NHLPA couldn’t play nice, ordinary folks suffered the economic fallout. So if you do choose to return to following NHL hockey, why not go and watch the games at your local pub or sports bar, and take a cab home. These businesses live off the crumbs of NHL’s pie, and if anyone is deserving of your entertainment dollar, surely it’s them. – Black Press

The determination to keep cycling O

ne of the first people – and one of the most inspiring – I met after moving to Maple Ridge almost seven years ago, is my good friend Betty. I remember the first time I ran into her, on the trail along Tamarack, when she had almost completed her Cycling daily bike ride to the Jackie Chow Kanaka Creek riverfront park. She told me she had just seen a bear in the park. The prospect of potentially pedaling into another one in the future didn’t deter her from continuing to enjoy her daily exercise. She followed pretty much the same route every day, rain or shine. It was the only route close to home that was flat and gentle enough on her arthritic knees. Part of her route was on the shoulder along Lougheed Highway between 105th Avenue and 240th Street, where she had to hold on tight to the handle bars when big semi-trailers would rumble past her. She’d cross the railroad tracks at 240th St., and then took River Road. She had a bad fall once by the lumber yard on the railroad track, which crosses the road at an angle – a dangerous crossing for cyclists, especially with rain or icy road conditions. Despite the injured thumb that never healed, she still didn’t give up cycling. When she got sick and couldn’t bike because of medications that made her feel

less stable on her bike, she finally settled for a hometrainer on her deck to stay in shape – but she kept looking forward to getting on her real bike again. In the end, once she got off the medication, she decided that it was getting a little too scary for her to bike across the highway. And who could blame her, now at 83 years old. There’s no doubt that Betty’s determination to keep cycling has helped her to stay as healthy as she can possibly be. Unfortunately, many seniors in our area who would benefit greatly from a daily bike ride are not as brave as Betty to ride on roads that are built for fast moving cars and trucks only. In the Netherlands, about 24 per cent of trips by seniors are made by bicycle. The number and length of trips by seniors are now actually increasing, thanks to the growing popularity of the e-bike. There are many safe off-road routes to choose from, and cycling to do their errands or to visit friends gives seniors a wonderful feeling of freedom and independence. It also offers a great opportunity to continue an active lifestyle by just getting around on their own power, without having to join other rickety old folks in the gym, and being constantly reminded that they’re now one of them. Recently I read about Jaap, a Dutch senior whose wife had died a few years previously. He decided to get himself an electric bike and started pedaling as a way of dealing with his loss. In 2011, he biked 10,000 km. One trip was 120-km long, to visit a newly born greatgrandchild.

In 2012 he was proud to be the oldest person – at 87 - to complete the Tour of Holland, a 1,300-km bike route around the borders of Holland. He stayed overnight with members of Vrienden op de Fiets (Friends on the Bicycle), private homes that offer cheap accommodation including breakfast (to people traveling on their own power only) and he made some wonderful new friends along the way. Jaap is, of course, a bit of an exception, even in the Netherlands. If Betty was living in the Netherlands, she wouldn’t be an exception – she’d be like everybody else – and that’s the way it should be. We like to think of ourselves as a society that’s just and equitable. But there’s nothing just and equitable about our road transportation system. It clearly favours drivers above everyone else, and it’s not a surprise that relatively few people cycle – especially seniors and young people – to get around. We may want to give this a lot of thought, because as we all know, things are changing. Aside from environmental considerations and things like peak oil and rising gas prices, we need to consider the fact that in the coming decades the proportion of seniors in our population will be growing. There will be a lot of demands on the younger, working generations, since there will be fewer of them looking after more of us. It looks like we can’t count on transit to save the day. Liberals need to reappoint AG

Homelessness partners Editor, The News: Re: Barking up the wrong tree, guys (Letters, Dec. 13). The federal government’s priority is economic growth and job creation, which we believe are essential to providing opportunities for all Canadians to flourish. And our approach is working: since the summer of 2009, the Canadian economy has created 880,000 net new jobs. Though job creation and long-term economic prosperity are vital components to helping the homeless, we recognize that job opportunities alone will not completely address the problem. Mr. Cowley is correct when he recognizes a correlation between addiction and mental illness as contributors to homelessness. This is why our government created the Mental Health Commission and introduced its Mental Health Strategy for Canada back in May of this year. This strategy is based on the experience of more than 2,500 people, including the general public, stakeholders, and organizations across Canada. Homeless people who live with a mental illness need improved services and support and this is exactly what this commission hopes to achieve. Another important initiative is the Homelessness Partnering Strategy, a federal program that partners with provinces and territories, communities, and the private and voluntary sectors to strengthen capacity. Our government recognizes that it has a role to play in addressing homelessness, but believes that the most effective services are delivered by community-based organizations. One fine example is the Salvation Army’s Caring Place in Maple Ridge. online comments • Bruce McWilliam: Re: Cities still spending too much (mapleridgenews.com). Maybe the Province’s auditor general for local government, having authority to scrutinize spending at the municipal level – really should have a good look at the dollars and “sense” in Pitt Meadows.

Editor, The News: B.C.’s Auditor General is an institution our province can be proud of. The auditor is appointed by a vote of the entire Legislature following a unanimous recommendation from an all-party committee. This seemingly bullet-proof appointment method was intended to keep party politics out of the business of accounting for public spending. But the people who designed this institution in the 1970s knew nothing about Christy Clark. And in those days, B.C. Rail was a Crown Corporation that no one thought would ever be sold, let alone be sold in a way that produced mystery, controversy, and criminal charges. Auditor John Doyle has done an excellent job, and to its credit the Liberal government has accepted many of his recommendations. But he no doubt bothered some in high places by taking the government to court over documents pertaining to the $6 million of public money paid out to halt the B.C. Rail trial. Further, Doyle called Speaker Bill Barisoff and the Liberal-dominated committee that runs the legislature in-

ept in their handling of assembly expenses. In 2008, a review of the Liberal government’s Industry Training Authority found unsatisfactory results, and in 2011 a review of their environmental assessment bureau also found gaps in effectiveness. A 2008 review of forest land removals found that the government effectively gave away $150 million in public assets. The response from then Forests Minister Pat Bell was to attack the auditor’s work as “unprofessional and lacking in integrity.” Can anyone not on the government’s payroll honestly doubt where the real lack of integrity lies? Perhaps most importantly, Doyle’s latest report differed with the Liberal government’s interpretation of the province’s finances. Doyle concluded that accurate accounting in the 2011/12 summary financial statements would involve a deficit some half a billion dollars larger than that reported by Finance Minister Mike de Jong. This past weekend we learned that the unanimity rule that was intended to protect the appointment process has been stood on its head. It has become

the means by which a party in power, angered by a dogged auditor, can retaliate by declining reappointment. Three Liberal party members of the five-member committee, two of whom have already said they will not be facing the voters in the May 14 provincial election, refused to grant Doyle a second term. Hopefully the public can apply sufficient pressure on Liberal government MLAs, such as Maple Ridge-Mission’s Marc Dalton, that this regrettable piece of political trickery will be remedied. Either the three Liberals on the selection committee – John Les, Blair Lekstrom and Eric Foster – will reverse themselves and agree to re-appoint John Doyle, or at least they will leave this matter for a new selection committee to deal with after a wall-to-wall house cleaning in the B.C. election. If the present party in power cannot bring itself to reappoint Doyle, then let the voters flush the system first. Then a new legislature can make a choice of auditor-general for the next six years. Maple Ridge council is recognizing reality and will allow a school site in Silver Valley to be used for 30 single family homes. Politicians made the decision by supporting a staff recommendation for rezoning of the property, saying there was no other option, because the school board no longer wants the site. School dollars are short, students are fewer and there’s no other use for the 1.5 hectare property at 23103 – 136th Ave., a staff report said. The site is one of three identified for possible elementary schools in Maple Ridge’s far northern suburb. But a November letter from the Maple Ridge school district says the school board no longer has plans to buy the Blaney Hamlet site, and that two other locations in the two other “hamlets” in Silver Valley can accommodate the fu-

Baby Friendly is an initiative by the World Health Organization, and it seeks to break down barriers to mothers breastfeeding – be they institutional or cultural. It recommends a newborn consume breast milk exclusively for six months. It also asserts that if a baby cannot get his or her mother’s milk, the next best option is donated breast milk, followed by formula. “It’s a living fluid, which artificial milk can never be,” said Harper. The process is straightforward. Women express or pump their milk and keep it in their freezer at home. They drop it off at the Maple Ridge Health Unit, which is now the fifth milk bank depot in B.C., joining others at the Chilliwack and Maple Ridge health units, Royal Columbian Hospital and Surrey Memorial Hospital. The milk is transported to the B.C. Women’s Milk Bank in Vancouver, pooled and pasteurized, and then returned to the depot. While the milk loses some of its nutritional benefit through this process, it is still the best food for babies, said Teri Porter, who is the Clinical Nurse Educator at Maple Ridge Hospital. “We’re appealing to women to donate their milk,” said Harper. Women who wish to donate must first go through an online screening process, and some could be excluded over smoking, alcohol intake and for other reasons. New B.C. ID cards to prevent health fraud

VICTORIA – The B.C. government is rolling out its new high-tech medical services cards starting Feb. 15, in an effort to phase out millions of CareCards in the hands of non-residents. The new cards will be combined with the B.C. driver’s licence, with a similar “BC Services Card” available to those who don’t drive. Residents will be required to re-enrol to renew the card every five years, whether they drive or not. Qualified residents can enrol in the Medical Services Plan at any provincial office that issues driver’s licences. There is no fee for the health services card only. The current $75 fee for a five-year driver’s licence renewal will apply to the new combined cards, discounted to $17 for seniors. There is no requirement to get the new card until your driver’s licence needs to be renewed. The government’s plan is to change over all eligible B.C. residents between the ages of 19 and 74 to the new cards over the next five years. To be eligible for MSP coverage, you must be a citizen or approved permanent resident of Canada, living in B.C. at least six months of the year. Dependents must also be residents to be eligible for coverage.

More than 40 people were quarantined at a residential care facility in Kamloops, and there were outbreaks at five Vancouver daycare centres and other regional facilities. Because it is a new strain of the bug, which is also called the Norwalk virus, people have limited resistance to it. This strain was first seen in Sydney, Australia in March of 2012. Because norovirus is so contagious, Fraser Health is recommending that patients not come to the hospital, if it is avoidable. Juma suggested patients visit their general practitioner, or call the Healthlink nurse at 8-1-1 any time of day or night. Fraser Health said the key is lots of rest at home, and lots of liquids to avoid dehydration. After two days, most patients can resume their normal routine. If their condition worsens, they should see a doctor.

What should I do if I get either virus? · The best thing to do if you get the flu or norovirus is to stay home, get rest and drink plenty of liquids. · Hand-hygiene is very effective in containing the spread of these viruses and should be aggressively practiced. · In the case of the norovirus, thoroughly clean contaminated surfaces immediately after an episode of illness with hot, soapy water and then disinfect the area using a household disinfectant. How can I protect myself from getting these viruses? · Wash hands frequently, especially after using the bathroom or changing diapers and before eating or preparing food. · Cough and sneeze into your arm, not your hand. · Eat well and be active every day. · The best protection against influenza is a flu shot.

New York pirate arrested in Whonnock Looki ng Bac k by Fred Braches

ot well known is the story of the appearance in Whonnock of Francis G. Bailey, the perpetrator of what the British Colonist in 1909 describes as “the most colossal theft in the history of the Atlantic coast.” Bailey was the president of a New York export shipping company, of which his brother Albert was the secretary. After a few successful years, the Baileys suffered investment losses of thousands of dollars, and the pair started using bank drafts received in payment for goods for their own private purposes. When finally the creditors knocked on the door, the Baileys chartered an old coaster, the Goldsboro, and filled it with cargo acquired on false pretenses, valued at $40,000. On Saturday, May 2, 1908, the vessel left New York with the brothers on board, without the required clearance papers from the port authority. It took less than a week for the creditors and the many firms who had merchandise on the ship to realize what had happened, and the authorities were alerted. The Goldsboro sailed to Honduras, which had no extradition treaty with the U.S. and where the brothers allegedly bought a banana plantation, thinking they would be safe. However, at the request of the state department, the Honduran minister of foreign affairs ordered the immediate detention of the Goldsboro, much to the “ ... satisfaction and high appreciation of the United States Government.” Francis and Albert Bailey, as well as the captain Alfred Oxley, and Henry Meyers, who had acquired most of the freight in New York, were arrested and put on board the Norwegian vessel Utstein in the custody of Lieut. P. W. Beery. But when the vessel sailed for Miami, it was minus the main suspect. Francis Bailey had escaped after Beery returned to the ship late at night from a “banquet” on shore. The three remaining men were taken back to New York, were Albert Bailey was sentenced to “not less than four years and six months and not more than six years and eight months in Sing Sing.” The newspapers said

As for the Goldsboro, after a mutiny by the crew was settled with the promise of payment of their wages, the leaking old tub returned to New York. But what happened to Francis Bailey? He made his way from Honduras up to the Vancouver area and, under the name of Col. Edward Shannon Kirkconnell, stayed on a property just west of the Whonnock train station put up for sale by Arthur Norman Hackney. This must have seemed an obscure enough corner and far enough removed from New York, where the authorities were obviously looking for him. Bailey, alias Kirkconnell, lived quietly in

Whonnock, looking, as later reported in the newspaper, “the part of a farmer-ranchman, born and bred.” He grew a beard and let his hair grow long, so there was hardly any likeness with the photograph that in June of 1909 a New York detective, accompanied by two Vancouver police constables, showed him. But when the New Yorker asked him, “Well, isn’t this your picture, taken when you were in business in New York, when you were living in Flatbush, and before the days of the pirate ship?,” the “Colonel” did not deny this. The search for Francis G. Bailey was over. After his arrest in Whonnock he was returned to New York, where he was tried and sentenced to imprisonment at Sing Sing for

the same length of time as his brother. It is not known what happened to either of the two after that. How had the New York police figured out where Bailey was hiding? According to the New York Times, somehow the police became suspicious of the correspondence between a Colonel Edward Shannon Kirkconnell and a Miss Katherine Maude Slocum, a New York schoolteacher. The letters were traced back to Whonnock, “ ... which the police were able to find on the latest maps of British Columbia.” The New York detective reported, “The mosquitoes up there are as big as chicken hawks and twice as fierce.” Fred Braches is a local historian who lives in Whonnock.

Plants in glass are post-holidays rage rushes (Jucus effusus) do very well in household situations. Both the straight and curly forms can expose their attractive white roots in a clear glass container of water. This whole new trend of introducing beautiful plants in glass containers is catching on, not only because they are unique but also because the care they require is minimal. Folks who previously had difficulty looking after plants can now relax and enjoy.

s we look to add some warmth and colour in our homes after the bright and cheery Christmas season, there is a new trend sweeping the world with a different style of décor. Glass containers – balls, baubles, vases and hangers – filled with easy-to-care-for indoor plants are all the rage. They’re called aeriums, and they are filled with plants like tillandsias, succulents and other fun and carefree tropicals. Aeriums need some indirect window light to ensure quality growth, but that’s about it. All you truly have to do is mist tillandsias and air plants with warm water once a day, or for succulents, simply check to see if the media in which they are growing is somewhat moist. In a glass environment, resilient tropicals just need a bit of misting or a moisture check once a week. It’s really that simple. I love the fact they are equally at home on a window sill, coffee table, desk or any convenient place in your home or office. They can also hang in windows, from the ceiling or from decorative light fixtures. The old terrarium look has been taken over by larger clear glass

or colourful stones in the colours of your home décor. For a very ‘in’ look, heart-shaped anthuriums with their beautiful foliage and vibrant blossoms can have the soil carefully washed off revealing colourful white and pink

roots, and they can look beautiful for months sitting in a clear glass vase of water. Peace Lilies (spathiphyllum) don’t perform quite as well, but they too look great displayed this way. Hardy water plants, like water

Almost all of these aeriums are self contained, fit into spots where traditional plants can’t and are tidy and clean. They are a lot of fun, and many garden stores now carry them for you to try. Empty clear glass containers are also available if you’re feeling particularly creative to plant your own. Aeriums are a nice and easy way to add warmth and life into your winter home. wo Maple Ridge prospects who have climbed the hockey ladder right up to the penultimate rung will be playing close to their family and friends over the next two weeks. Brad Hunt is with the Vancouver Canuck’s farm team, and his Chicago Wolves will take on the Abbotsford Heat this weekend, with games on Friday and Saturday nights (starts are 7 p.m.). Family friends and former teammates will be in the sellout crowd. The next weekend, Victor Bartley’s Milwaukee Admirals will be in Abbotsford. Both players are offensive defencemen who

will attempt to make the NHL by moving the puck – piling up points while not getting burned in their own end. Hunt was a great junior, his best season being 55 points (16 goals, 39 assists) in 60 games for the Burnaby Bulldogs of the BCHL in the 2007-2008 season. That won him a scholarship to Bemidji State University in Minnesota, where he continued his impressive hockey career. Through four NCAA seasons the ironman played a team record 150 games, and became the school’s top-scoring defenceman of all time with 112 points (24 goals, 88 assists). He was signed by Chicago on July 24, 2012. Playing what should be his first full season with the Wolves, he leads all defencemen with 14 points (two goals, 12 assists) in 27 games. Abbotsford has been good to Hunt – he

scored his first professional goal there, on the power play, and added an assist. Victor Bartley is the top scoring defenceman with the Admirals, farm team of the Nashville Predators. He has 18 points (six goals and 12 assists) in 34 games this year. In addition to his offence, he is the team’s plus-minus leader at plus-7. Bartley’s numbers build on a resume that includes a great rookie season in the AHL – last year he had 39 points in 76 games played. Bartley was a standout Western Hockey League defenceman who played with the Kamloops Blazers and Regina Pats. He finished his over-age year with the Pats with 46 points (15 goals, 31 assists) in 72 games. Bartley started his pro career with the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies, and was an all-star with 23 points (two goals, 21 assists) in 21 games. The

parent club New York Islanders promoted him to the AHL Bridgeport Sound Tigers, but he appeared in just eight games before suffering a season-ending triceps injury. He spent the following season (2010-2011) in Swedish pro hockey with Rogle BK. He was the league’s second highest scoring defenceman with 11 goals and 23 assists. Following that impressive year, he signed a two-year, entry-level contract with Nashville. There are other AHL players from Maple Ridge. Brett Sonne is a checking centre with the Peoria Rivermen, while Patrick Wiercioch is with the Birmingham Senators, and has had eight games with the Ottawa Senators. He could take his place on the NHL club’s blueline as the season gets underway, and is sure to get future callups.

Racers win at Burnaby Velodrome

The West Coast Auto Group Football Club (WCAGFC) has a new coach with the Whitecaps and Gunners on his resume. Adam Day is the new director of coach development, and will also take over as head coach of the club’s micro program. He will oversee the development of the club’s coaching staff. Day’s vast experience includes playing and coaching in England, the U.S., Canada and Greece. He recently returned to Vancouver, having worked for English Premier League team Arsenal FC. Prior clubs include the Vancouver Whitecaps and Charlton Athletic. He has a degree in physical education, is a certified trainer, and a holder of the prestigious UEFA A coaching licence. “Adam is a fantastic addition to our staff,” said Chris Begg, president of the WCAGFC, in a press release. “Providing all club coaches with a program that will advance their own technical training will ultimately provide a direct benefit to all of our playing members. Our coaches will have even more tools to help each player to develop to their maximum potential.”

The Local Ride Racing Team ended 2012 with victories on Dec. 27-30, at the Superior Glass four-day track cycling competition, held at the Burnaby Velodrome. The Maple Ridgebased team’s youngster Maggie Coles-Lyster (Maple Ridge), 13, won the youth women’s omnium and contested the senior women’s Madison, placing fourth. Local Ride Racing’s elite women, Meghan Grant (Ladner) and Melanie Von Stetten (Langley) placed first and third in the overall omnium competition, respectively. They finished fifth in the Madison. This season the team will have a stronger youth and development focus. Recent additions on the women’s development side include sisters Megan and Kelsey MacDonald of Pitt Meadows.

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Henrietta Eileen Murray announce her passing away peacefully in her sleep at Baillie House in Maple Ridge at the age of 89 years. She is predeceased by her husband William J F Murray and grandson Michael T Murray and father John R Munden and mother Stella Munden (Keeping) and many sisters and brothers as well as many in-laws. She is survived by sons William J M Murray (Linda) of Campbell River and Ian L M Murray (Darleen) of Mission, 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and sister Viola M Reid (Holomew) of Halifax, Nova Scotia and brother Llewellyn Munden of Port Aux Basque, Newfoundland. The family would like to thank the Staff of Baillie House, Albion Flat for the care and love to our mother in her stay. Celebration of Life will be held at Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel 11969 - 216st Maple Ridge on January 26, 2013 at 11:00 am. On January 2, 2013 John passed away peacefully with his family by his side. He is remembered with love by his wife of 52 years Patricia, and his children Micheal, Merle & Marilyn. Also mourning his loss are his sisters, Josephine & Theresa, as well as his many grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family & friends. John was predeceased by his daughter Carolann, his sister Kathy and his parents Mina and Joseph. John was a devoted husband, father and friend. He was an honest, kind, loyal, and hardworking man with many talents. John loved to garden and enjoyed spending time with his best friend, Pat, traveling and playing Yahtzee. John’s family is grateful for the many wonderful caregivers who provided comfort and support. WHEAT, Sylvia Margaret December 11, 1921 December 24, 2012 Our loving Mom, Grandma, and G.G., passed away at the age of 91 years. Born in Dodsland, Sask., until the age of 3, then to Vancouver, moving to Pitt Meadows in 1957, for 41 years, then to Maple Ridge Legion Manor in 1998. Mom worked at Boeing through the war, and after married Cyril on Feb. 9, 1947. She was predeceased by Cy in Dec 1984, her parents Charles & Sarah Gaskin and brother Charles Gaskin in 2003 & sister Muriel Brayden in 2007. She is survived by son Ken (Gitta) Wheat and daughter Sharon Wheat. Grandma to Jennifer (Shane) Wheat, Clifton (Tasha) Vanderwal & Stephen (Sarah) Vanderwal. G.G. to Caden Vanderwal and twins Lucas & Mason Vanderwal, and soon to be baby Logan Tatosky. Sylvia was a long time member of Legion #88, volunteered at Sunnyhill Children’s Hospital for 7 years, at Blood Donors for 25 years and CKNW Bowling for Orphans Fund for 27 years. A member of Ridge Meadows Senior Society where among other activities she line danced and played Mexican Train for many years.
