Reaction varies as NHL hits the ice ROGER KNOX Morning Star Staff

There’s mixed emotions locally over the potential return of the NHL. Training camps are set to open today (unless the players voted against accepting the new deal Saturday) and the 48-game regular season – with no pre-season games – kicks off Jan. 19. This comes after a 113day lockout ended Jan. 6, wiping out half the season. Businesses such as Checkers Bar and Grill in the Best Western Plus Vernon Lodge, and The Green pub (formerly Sneakers) in the Village Green Hotel, are happy to have the NHL back. “We are very excited as we like to consider ourselves one of the best places in town to watch sports,” said Checkers manager Pamela Lovig. “It (lockout) has affected us somewhat, but we are still doing OK considering. I do believe we will get busier with the NHL.” Added Ian Gibson, from The Green: “As a pub with a sports bar history, we are very happy to be back showing games for the public to enjoy, and look forward to even the shortened season as it will certainly bring out customers again, especially at cup time.” The lockout affected businesses such as Sun Valley Source For Sports, which sells NHL merchandise. “Jerseys have not sold since the lockout started,” said Sun Valley’s Mike Melbourne, who cancelled his entire NHL jersey order. “Most of the sales happen for Christmas, so that business is gone. No matter how many games they play, it’s not going to be the same. “I always like watching hockey, and it creates a little more excitement for our business, but the whole lockout kind of bothers me. If they paid me millions to play hockey I’d be happy with that. Wouldn’t you?” Former NHL player Sandy Moger, now director of hockey operations for Greater Vernon Minor Hockey, said his job keeps him so busy to the point he doesn’t really care about the NHL – until the playoffs – and he hasn’t really missed it. Moger, who played for the Vancouver Canucks, Boston Bruins and Los Angeles Kings, believes the lockout has hurt the game. “Before, the NHL was at an all-time high for popularity, now they have to start over again,” said Moger.

“A lot of fans are not very happy about the lockout. It’s going to take awhile to get those fans back.” The Morning Star, on its Facebook page, asked the public for their reaction to the NHL season starting in mid-January. Answers, of course, varied. “I say we should lock them out,” said Kathryn Katen Davis. “I’m extremely happy they got the deal done,” wrote Tyce Koenig. “I just feel (NHL commissioner Gary) Bettman could have agreed a long time ago. All my hate goes towards the commish and not the players. I feel they have wanted to play since day one.” “I’d rather be watching the New Zealand All Blacks play rugby any day,” said Steve Felix. “While I am happy they were able to

come to an agreement, my question is how much will this agreement cost the fans?” asked Paula Harned. “Ticket prices are already often too expensive for most people to afford. Will this new agreement simply make attending a live game simply out of reach for all but the elite one per cent?” Devoted Toronto Maple Leafs fan Bob Wright – who said he has even seen his once favourite club win two Stanley Cup games (the Leafs haven’t been in the Cup final since winning it in 1967) – has had enough. “But now, after the second lockout, I am thoroughly disgusted by the NHL and the players’ union, so much so, that I will never watch or support my Leafs or anything to do with the NHL,” said Wright. “Their greed and selfishness has ruined the game. All of my jerseys and memorabilia have been boxed and sent to recycling and the dump. Thanks for ruining a great sport you greedy bastards.” An informal poll on The Morning Star Facebook page showed 65 per cent of respondents either didn’t care that the lockout was over or vowed not to watch NHL hockey anymore.

Carnival goes prehistoric Jennifer Smith

An almost prehistoric tradition in Vernon is all set to offer a timeless 10 days of fun. The 53rd annual Vernon Winter Carnival kicks off Feb. 1 with more than 100 events taking place until Feb. 10 – all of which will fall into the theme of Prehistoric Carnival. From the pre-carnival Queen Silver Star talent showcase (Jan. 13) to the highlyanticipated parade (Feb. 2), to an array of new and returning events, Carnival is one of, if not the, largest event of the year in Vernon. “Community events of this magnitude don’t happen everywhere,” said Calvin Hoy, VWC vice-chairperson. “It creates a community and it creates a city that is a better place for all of us to live in.” This year, Carnival is also giving back. Fix Auto Collision, presenting sponsor of VWC, will be giving away two vehicles to families in need during Carnival. “This is where we can offer a hand up, not a hand out so much,” said Martin von Holst with Fix Auto Collision. There are also a number of new events to this year’s Carnival. In spirit of the new Family Day holiday (Feb. 18), Carnival is hosting its own day for families Feb. 9 at Polson Park. The free event will include snowshoe races, tug of war, broomball, a bonfire, entertainment and more. “Bundle up for the day and come on out,” said Brittany Sjoblom, VWC executive director. Anyone can join in and challenge the servers across an obstacle course while balancing a tray.

Okanagan band defends financial management richard rolke Morning Star Staff

There is frustration that all First Nations are being portrayed as poor financial managers. B y r o n L o u i s , Okanagan Indian Band chief, says that Byron Louis while some First Nations aren’t living up to their financial responsibilities, he is concerned

some politicians and media are lumping all bands together. “We are complying. Come look at our books. We have nothing to hide,” he said. “We shouldn’t be put down simply because we are First Nations.” There are 614 bands across Canada but Louis says only onequarter are in financial trouble and have experienced outside management as a result. “How do you use that to broadly pain over all of us? It’s not 100 per cent, it’s 25 per cent,” he said, adding that federal guidelines for all bands are clear.

“We must submit an audit every year and our books.” Louis believes the focus on how First Nations operate financially is an attempt by the federal government to divert attention from itself during the Idle No More rallies across the country. While some of the protests have targeted poverty, housing and other social issues, Louis believes the environment is critical. “When it comes to the Conservatives, there has been little consultation when it comes to their acts (legislation) and primarily environmental considerations.”

Specifically, Louis is concerned that environmental assessments for development are being reduced in scope. “It puts management under the proponents who are in a conflict of interest,” he said, adding that the environment should be a priority for all Canadians and not just First Nations. “When we’re calling for clean water, we’re not the only ones drinking that.” Louis also believes that the environment is linked directly to many ongoing social challenges. “Poverty with some First

Nations is because of a lack of access to natural resources,” he said.

Questions surface over MLA office lease richard rolke Morning Star Staff

There are questions about renovations at Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster’s office and who owns the building. The B. C . Conservatives have raised concerns about Foster leasing his 31st Avenue office from relatives of his constituency assistant. “It is imperative that Mr. Foster answer these serious and legitimate questions at the earliest opportunity,” said John Cummins, Conservative leader. In 2012, the issue of Foster leasing from the family of an employee went to B.C.’s conflict of interest commissioner. “You have advised me that your constituency assistant played no part in the sourcing of the space or in the negotiating process,” said Paul Fraser, commissioner, in a letter to Foster. “The entire process resulted in what appears to have been a full and

fair negotiation that was conducted at arm’s length without any special benefit or advantage given or promised.” Fraser goes on to say, “neither your private interest or that of your constituency assistant were furthered by the lease arrangements.” The Conservatives have also raised questions about $67,000 in renovations to the building. “The leasing market at the time was extremely depressed and there were numerous reasonably priced office spaces available that didn’t require tens of thousands of dollars in repairs and renovations,” said Scott Anderson, local Conservative candidate. time of the lease and needed to be completed. “The price was right. I wanted to be on the ground floor and the parkade is across the street,” he said. “I didn’t look at anything that didn’t require substantial renovations. It’s a reasonable amount of money for what was done.” The original bill submitted to the Legislature for payment was $78,000 but that was later reduced to $67,000. Foster says he was only asked to sign off on the work being done and the cost was between the landlord and the provincial comptroller. While it’s been suggested that Foster is paying the $67,000 back, he says that it’s standard for the comptroller to pay a bill upfront and then recover those costs through the MLA’s constituency budget. “There is no additional cost to taxpayers,” he said. Questions were recently raised about Foster chairing a committee that decided not to retain B.C. auditor general John Doyle. Doyle had issued a letter stating that documentation for Foster’s renovations were not complete. Foster has stated he did not know about Doyle’s letter and believes the focus on his office lease and renovations are politically motivated. “It’s an attempt to discredit me because I chair a committee. It’s strictly character assassination,” he said. Anderson insists he is not attacking Foster. “I am asking questions that every constituent in VernonMonashee and every citizen of B.C. deserves answers to,” he said.

Accident slows highway traffic ROGER KNOX Morning Star Staff

Friday morning traffic at a busy Vernon intersection was slowed by a two-vehicle accident. Shortly before 8 a.m., Vernon RCMP received a report of a collision between a Ford Escort and a Chevrolet van at Highway 6 and Middleton Way. “A witness to the accident reported that the van was waiting to make a

left-hand turn onto the highway and was stopped at a red light,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “The Escort was westbound on the highway and was proceeding through a yellow light. “Indications are the van turned early and collided with the Escort.” The driver of the Escort, a 73-year-old Vernon man, suffered serious injuries in the accident. He was transported by

ambulance to Vernon Jubilee Hospital. The driver of the van, a 51-year-old Vernon woman, was not injured. She was ticketed under the Motor Vehicle Act for failing to stop at a red light. Highway 6 was reduced to single-lane traffic for close to an hour as RCMP officers investigated the accident, and emergency services personnel attended to the male driver.

Greater Vernon officials won’t guarantee that all of the snow now will translate into lots of water this summer. A couple of major storms have passed through the region in the past week, leaving substantial amounts of snow at higher elevations. “Conditions are looking favourable at this point,” said Al Cotsworth, utilities manAl Cotsworth ager for the Regional District of North Okanagan. “We look at the snowpack readings at Silver Star and everything is looking good.” Presently, there is a snow base of 205 centimetres at Silver Star. However, Cotsworth cautions that it’s early in the season and a number of factors could erode the snowpack and lead to limited water availability in

RDNO staff will visit the Aberdeen Plateau at the end of January to investigate snowpack levels and the current status of the reservoirs that provide water to Greater Vernon. Because of the uncertainty around the area’s water resources, residents are encouraged to conserve. “This is a great time of year because you are not using water outdoors,” said Cotsworth. He added that residents can review potential water waste if their meter dial is running but appliances are not using water. “Check for leaks, especially with toilets.”

Museum earns $10,000 Morning Star Staff

Social media has paid off for the Lumby Museum. The agency has won $10,000 U.S. from the EMC2 Heritage Trust as part of an online contest. “A huge network of Facebook friends liked, shared and voted for the entry which placed second in the world,” said Robin Ledrew, with the Monashee Arts Council, who worked on the submission. The money will help digitize the photo collection at the museum as well as taped interviews with seniors. They will be uploaded on to a website. Presently, the photos are deteriorating and threatened by flooding. If not digitally stored, they may be lost forever. As part of the contest entry, museum employee Georgie Hay starred in a series of photos while in vintage dress. Dressed by volunteers, Hay remarked that the high-buttoned boots “fit perfectly” but the lace blouse, buttoning at the back, would have required a maid. The EMC2 Heritage Trust supports organizations worldwide that advocate the digitalization, preservation and improved access of cultural resources. “Through the EMC2 Heritage Trust Project, together we can ensure that future generations will continue to be entertained and educated by the world’s historic artifacts,” states the organization’s mandate. Spamming the globe

y e-mail program, which touts itself as the best in the world, promises effective spam filtering, easy-to-organize mailing lists and hassle-free access from anywhere. It does all of that. And, like all other e-mail programs, it randomly throws real e-mail into the spam file. It’s like hiring a moving company to get your furniture across town and finding out six months later that the box with your wedding pictures didn’t make the trip because the van driver threw it out on a whim. “Sorry. Who knew you’d want something like that?” It’s only when you get an e-mail from something that should have automatically been put in your spam file, like “worldsraunchiestsexvideos” or “tryviagrafree,” Jim Mullen that you investigate. Sure enough, most of the stuff in the junk file will be junk — amazing junk, obvious junk. You wonder who would respond to, “Get prescriptions at half price,” from A. Nonymous. How can he afford to do it? Because he makes the pills in his basement from sawdust, cornstarch and food coloring and there isn’t any real medicine in them, that’s how. And he passes the savings along to you, the soon-to-be-dead consumer. One of his big selling points is that he’s never had a complaint. How could he? All his customers are dead or in comas. Now there’s a business plan. Sex, medicine and money are the three big junk mail themes. Apparently, no one with an e-mail address is getting enough of these three things — or, if they are, they’re paying too much for them. So when you see an e-mail for halfprice Viagra, it’s a spam trifecta: sex, medicine and money, all in one e-mail. Not that there is any getting away from ED. The commercials are all the same: A guy in

good shape, about 45, is windsurfing or rock climbing or cycling or jogging. He couldn’t be in better shape; he couldn’t be more attractive. But he suffers from a horrible affliction that I had never thought of as a big problem until Viagra was advertised on TV in 1999 in a commercial starring Bob Dole, who never mentioned the product. It’s odd that now impotence can be talked about a thousand times a day on TV, but I feel awkward mentioning it here, because people will write letters saying how disappointed they are to read about this kind of filth in a family newspaper. Because, as we all know, the family that reads the newspaper together — hey! Would you stop sexting and listen to me? I’m over here! Look down! Watching ED commercials with the sound off, you’d think the companies were selling a cure for rock climbing, surfing, cycling, jogging, cooking or gardening. And while a cure for those activities is desperately needed and would no doubt improve countless lives, that’s not the drug that’s being sold. It is a cure for a condition that, in many cases, is caused by consuming too much beer and/or watching too much TV instead of exercising. How many windsurfers and rock climbers suffer from ED compared with men whose only exercise is climbing in and out of their cars when they go to the doctor who is treating their adultonset diabetes? And then to Hooters for lunch? Why do I never get spam telling men there’s a free cure for some cases of ED? All you have to do is take a shower and shave and stop walking around the house in dirty sweatpants. Coming home sober, washing the dishes and cleaning the bathroom without being asked have been known to work, too. But who is going to spam you with that? There’s no money in it. There’s no question that some First Nations band councils in Canada are not living up to their financial responsibilities and necessary resources aren’t getting to rank-and-file members. But what’s been unfortunate over the last few days is how some federal politicians and media suggest these situations are the norm and all First Nations bands are either in financial difficulty or using money inappropriately. Those claims are particularly troubling as the Department of Indian Affairs’ website states there are 614 First Nations bands in the country and 157 are under default management because of financial matters. Ineptness and inappropriateness aren’t limited to just one race and they can be found at all levels of government, as demonstrated by the recent allegations of corruption in some Quebec cities. Here in Vernon, a mayor resigned and was sentenced for breach of trust because of false expense claims. And yet, there weren’t broad accusations that all mayors in B.C. were involved in similar activities because of what happened in Vernon. While we should all expect transparency and prudence from bands, the current situation is a blatant attempt to divert attention away from the federal government’s handling of First Nations matters. And these political games are unfortunate because they may leave Canadians believing that all First Nations are using tax dollars appropriately. The reality, according to Ottawa’s own figures, is a vast majority of bands are operating responsibly and meeting financial requirements. Ultimately, some in government and the media may want to cling to tired paternal attitudes, but that unfairly reflects the country we live in and the ability of most First Nations to govern.

Say yes to sports complex

n April 6, Greater Vernon will vote in a referendum for funding of the proposed sports facility. As a Vernon taxpayer and amateur athlete, I strongly support this project. This facility meets a long-standing need for so many user groups who, to date, do not have a proper facility to practice or compete in their perspective sports. So why do we need this facility? Presently, there are a number of sports and athletes who do not have a proper place to train or compete. A recent study shows that the Greater Vernon area needs six new sports fields alone to meet the present needs of local athletes. The goal of this project is to give those sports in the Vernon area that place. With the construction of this facility, we will finally have a facility that not only meets the present but also the future needs of sports like track and field, football, rugby, lacrosse and soccer. This site will be something where our athletes can compete at not only the local level, but also at the provincial and national level. Currently, there is not a proper track and field facility that allows for local athletes to train in all areas of track and field events. The facility proposed allows for all athletic events from running, jumping and throwing. Polson Park does not meet these needs. Presently, school track athletes have to travel to Lumby to train for their sports. This seems wrong to me. Furthermore, the Vernon Football League does not have a place to practice or compete. They train on the DND baseball fields which are less than ideal. Not only that, but they do not have a regulation field in which they can properly host football games

or league play. Again, this seems wrong. This facility will meet their needs and then some. Why the artificial turf? The artificial turf allows for back-to-back use as it needs less maintenance after each event, reducing the number of fields required significantly. This also goes for the synthetic surface of the track. This material will last for at least 25 years, where a lesser material would need to be replaced after 12 years. The reduction in the quality of the surfaces would, in my estimation, just result in us spending more money in the future. Why is it important to have these capabilities? It is anticipated that this facility will attract more than 100,000 visits a year. It will be used by soccer teams, football teams, students from the school district, track and field athletes, runners, people participating in preventative and recuperative health programs and the general public. Since I moved to Vernon five years ago, Greater Vernon has hosted a number of high-profile competitions that have not only brought economic benefits but rave reviews for the area. Without this facility as proposed we

I apologize for sounding selfish in this regard because it could also, and more so, ruined the lives of people I don't even know. Actually, I'm still shaken from it. Two kids were riding their bikes on a bike path to the left of the parked cars. Check it out yourself. The sidewalk, of course, is where these kids should be on

Not having this facility would mean a significant loss in future benefits. This year, Kamloops is hosting two major track events both bringing international athletes to town. Although it would take time for us to meet this level of competition, the B.C. senior and provincial games could be hosted as soon as 2015 or 2016. These are only a few of the potential events possible for this facility. Are we willing to forego approving the construction of this recreation facility and jeopardize future benefits? So how much will this cost me? It has been calculated that it will cost the average taxpayer about $17 a year. This is not much for a world-class facility. The loan will be spread over 20 years, with the initial rate locked in for the first 10 years. This is a good time to do this as the interest rates are at all-time lows. If we wait to initiate this project for a few more years, then we will probably increase the cost to taxpayers significantly.

Not myself or anyone else could prognosticate the potential horror of this, all because of a bike path that pretty much encourages kids to come out and play in high-density traffic.

It has also been calculated by RDNO staff that any cuts would not significantly reduce the cost to the taxpayer. A cut of $1 million would only reduce the overall taxpayer amount by $2. The final point, I would like to make is one of location. A number of people have voiced concern over the proposed location. RDNO staff looked at a number of locations and discarded them either because the area was too small for the facility footprint or they were too costly. Okanagan College has offered to lease the 5.77 hectares to the regional district for a 40-year period at a cost of $1 a year. The Agricultural Land Commission has approved the use of this area, thereby eliminating the need to purchase property elsewhere. The property is within close proximity to Coldstream and Vernon and has existing parking facilities and amenities. All of this has significantly reduced the overall cost of this project. If we were to pick any other location, the costs for this project would escalate significantly. I strongly support this project and believe that this will allow for better quality of life for all citizens of all ages and abilities. And that is one of the reasons we love this area so much — a great quality of life. The next incident involved an adult biker close to a turning lane off 20th Street and 46th Avenue. The actual bike lane here moved to a ramp toward a part of the sidewalk. Instead, this person turned left next to a jut-out curb and right in front of me. I was forced to jam my brakes. I hope this city gets rid of bike paths, especially those to the left of parked cars. The other hope is my conscience for at least trying to forestall the eventuality of a tragic accident given my close calls. Gordon thomas

Thieves target winter camp Morning Star Staff

Thieves will go to great lengths and distances to take somebody’s personal belongings. Lumby RCMP received a report Monday of a theft from a winter campsite far into the Monashee mountains. Three Kelowna men on snowmobiles ventured to an area some 40 kilometres up Sugar Lake Road and then up a forest service road. “After setting up camp they went skiing in the area,” said Lumby RCMP Cpl. Henry Henry Proce Proce. “Despite the extremely remote location, someone apparently followed the sled tracks and located the camp.” The victims’ tent was entered and digital cameras, GPS units, mountaineering jackets, pants and gloves were stolen. One of the biggest names in paleontology will be in Vernon Feb. 2.

Dr. Philip Currie will speak about his theory into the habits of carnivorous dino-

saurs that roamed the Red Deer River badlands of Alberta as part of Okanagan College’s

Science in Society Speaker Series. “The Albertosaurus bonebed and several other localities suggest behavioural patterns more complex than people have been willing to attribute to dinosaurs until recently,” said the University of Alberta professor. Currie’s talk takes place at 3:30 p.m. at Okanagan College’s Vernon campus. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Vipers unload top three scorers Graeme Corbett Morning Star Staff

The Vernon Vipers will be without their top three scorers for the remainder of the B.C. Hockey League season. With the playoffs a long shot, Vipers’ head coach/GM Jason Williamson put his top talent on the trading block to restock for next season, when Vernon will host the RBC Cup national Junior A tournament. Leaving the den before Thursday night’s carding deadline were forwards Adam Tambellini (Surrey Eagles), Aaron Hadley (Nanaimo Clippers) and Pearce Eviston (Victoria Grizzlies). All three transactions were for future considerations except the Tambellini deal, which will see 1994born forward Mason Blacklock join Vernon from the Eagles. Williamson also sent future considerations to Surrey Adam Tambellini as part of the trade. Eviston, a 20-year-old who started his BCHL career with the Grizz before joining to the WHL Portland Winterhawks, left the Vipers last weekend after getting benched by Williamson for taking bad penalties. “You’ve got to listen to all offers, and if they blow the doors off, which they did, then you have to look at what’s best for the organization, not just for now, Pearce Eviston but for the future,” said Williamson. Blacklock, who turns 19 in February, has nine goals and eight assists in 32 games. Vernon will be his fourth BCHL team. “It’s his third year in the league and he’s starting to come into his own,” said Williamson. “Big forward (6-foot-1, 195 pounds), left shot. They didn’t want to move him, but we made them.” Tambellini (22), Hadley (12) and Eviston (9) accounted for nearly half of the Vipers’ 90 goals, and their departure leaves defenceman Brett Corkey as the team’s top scorer with two goals and 18 helpers in 34 games. Williamson expects his younger players to step up into bigger roles, and said the remaining 18 games will basically be an open audition. “We’re going to give our younger players the ball and push with those guys to get into the playoffs,” he said. “Anybody that is returning has to play well because we have a job to do and that’s to turn this ship around. “Sometimes when these things happen, it lights a spark under some guys. They are good players and they’ve been top-line guys before and now they have to go and be that now.” Williamson noted it was helpful for his players to have a couple days to digest the news of their teammates’ departure before the Vipers hosted the Powell River Kings Saturday night at Wesbild Centre. “It was tough because they (Tambellini and Hadley) were

It’s tough on them.” For Hadley and Tambellini, who, incidentally are first cousins, Thursday was a bittersweet experience. “I had a great two-and-a-half years in Vernon, but I’m excited to join the Nanaimo Clippers,” said Hadley, who registered a pair of assists in his debut as Mike Vandekamp’s Clippers punished the Cowichan Valley Capitals 7-2 Friday night at Frank Crane Arena. Nanaimo captain Trevor Fitzgerald, a Vernon product, earned second star for his 1+2 showing. “I’m happy to go to a team that’s in contention to win an RBC Cup,” added Hadley. Given Vernon’s last-place standing in the Interior Division – they are six points out of a playoff spot at 12-180-7 – Tambellini wasn’t exactly surprised to see Williamson wheel and deal. “That’s OK with me; I get to come to a good place in Surrey,” said the rangy pivot, who earned second star in his Eagle debut Friday night, recording both goals in a 2-1 win over the Penticton Vees at South Surrey Arena. Glennon going to Caps camp Morning Star Staff

Vernon’s Connor Glennon has got the Vancouver Whitecaps Soccer Academy’s attention. The 13-year-old winger/ striker starts today a week-long residency program experience at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby. “Connor will train with the U14 residency, while Alex Matsubara of Kelowna will train with the U15s,” said David Broadhurst, head of the Okanagan Whitecaps coaching staff. “They will train every day so it’s as close to being a professional player you can get at this age.” Glennon was observed a few times by Stuart Neely, the Whitecaps’ head of high performance, once during the Vernon school academy workouts and once at a prospects session, at the VantageOne indoor facility and again at a prospects camp, at SFU, in early December. “After seeing him in those different environments, he was invited,” said Broadhurst. “He’s too young for the full-time residency program so the experience will be phenomenal for him.” Added Glennon: “They say I

have good fitness and I’m quick and skilled on the ball.” Glennon is a Grade 8 student at Seaton and a huge fan of Dutch forward Robin Van Persie and Manchester United. He was “excited and thrilled” to learn about his selection to the program. “I just want to show what I can do and try to meet new people,” he said. Glennon led the EA Sports B.C. Soccer Premier League with eight goals last year and then helped Team B.C. win the Western Canadian Under 13 Boys Soccer Championships in Winnipeg. He was selected Man of the Match versus Alberta North and scored the winner in the sudden-death penalty shootout. Glennon was selected (one of nine B.C. players) by the CSA coaching staff to play in the Umbro Challenge All-Star game at the end of the tournament (his team won 1-0). “Stuart is really impressed with Connor’s attitude and his technical skills are of the higher level,” said Broadhurst. “His passion for the game in unbelievable; he just can’t get enough of the game.”

Vernon Coca-Cola Vipers jumpstarted their home Midget Tier 3 hockey tournament with a 4-4 draw against the Quesnel Thunder Friday night at Civic Arena. Quesnel opened the scoring midway through the first period, but Vernon replied just 27 seconds later when Hayden Chase was hauled down on a breakaway, only to convert on the ensuing penalty shot. Conor Butte-Landsfried scored unassisted early in the second period, and Chase buried his second, assisted by Jack Pawsey and Conor Payne, to take a 3-1 lead. Quesnel came out strong in the third period, scoring three unanswered goals to regain the lead. With 6:25 to play, the Coke boys’ Dustin Copeland collected the equalizer, with assists to Chase and Brandon Rysen. Earlier games saw Chase grounding Mission 8-5, Winfield bouncing South Okanagan 8-6, and Smithers outgunning West Kelowna 5-1.

The North Okanagan Knights got off to a solid start in their Pee Wee tournament, gonging the Salmon Arm Silvertips 6-2 Friday. Colby Jepson opened the scoring for Salmon Arm halfway through the first period, assisted by Jordan Fornier and Brayden Haskell. The Charles Bloom Timberwolves used home-floor advantage to win their opening games at the Timberwolves Senior Girls Invitational Basketball Tournament Friday in Lumby. The T-Wolves shook off some early jitters to brush back the Seaton Sonics 50-18 in their opener. Bloom led 14-3 after one quarter and got excellent pressure from guards Lisa Campeau, Josalyn Shields and Jessica Salzmann to create numerous turnovers. In their second pool game, the Timberwolves overcame an early 10-0 deficit to earn a 56-41 comeback win over the Barriere Cougars. The Cougars surprised Bloom with a well-executed full court press, but the hosts persevered to close the gap to five points at the half. North Americans inching ahead Canadian Curling Association

Team North America took control at the World Financial Group Continental Cup Friday at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton. There were 12 points available in the Ryder Cup-style curling competition, featuring 12 of the best men’s and women’s teams in the world, and North America captured nine of them to take a 13-8 lead over Team World in the overall points race through two days. The first team to 30.5 points will claim the Cup. The North Americans capped their day by winning two men’s team games on Friday night and tying another. “Boy, what a day,” said Canadian skip Kevin Martin (Edmonton) after his team rolled to a 6-3 win over Team World’s Niklas Edin (Karlstad, Sweden). “Well, two days. Everybody’s been playing really, really well. We’ve got the momentum, and hopefully we can keep it going, but it’s a long way to the finish line yet.” Martin’s team took control with a firstend deuce, and then scored three in the fourth end to cruise home with the victory on the centre sheet, where he was able to watch the two other North American men’s teams playing on either side of him put up positive results. “It takes a lot of pressure off of you, and it adds so much pressure to the other team

Through the eyes of Twain james ross Special To The Morning Star

BERMUDA - Mark Twain, the ever articulate, globe-trotting American humourist once remarked, “Bermuda is the right country for a jaded man to loaf in.” As I’m checking into the luxurious Fairmont Hamilton Princess, I spy the familiar figure of Samuel Clemens, Mark Twain, sitting on a lobby bench behind me. I am initially taken aback. Here was the author of my childhood favourites, The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, with his bushy moustache and unruly thick head of

hair, sitting relaxed, legs crossed, and arm extended along the bench’s back. I realize, as my eyes adjust, what I’m seeing is the master wordsmith immortalized by a lifesize bronze statue. Twain was a frequent guest here at the Princess, in the opulent hotel’s early days. He would relax on the veranda puffing on his cigar, reciting poetry and regaling guests with tall tales. He had fallen in love with this tiny and pristine island, far out in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Carolina, since his first visit in 1867. Twain loved the pace, the company and

rays, but free of the tropics’ relentless heat. Bermuda is blessed with an abundance of charms. Iridescent turquoise waters, pink beaches and tropical flavours attract most visitors, but the island is also safe, clean, orderly and polite. There are many enchanting little nooks to explore, a rich history, diverse cultures and exceptional natural beauty. The island paradise would call Twain back another seven times, and for some 187 days over the next 43 years, and he would become one of Bermuda’s most famous advocates. He wrote about Bermuda’s seductiveness, and these stories helped attract many affluent visitors. On January 1, 1885, the Hamilton Princess opened to accommodate these new travellers. Twain was one of the first visitors to experience the Crystal Caves, an underground world of delicate splendour. Two youngsters discovered the caves in 1905 during a game of cricket, and visitors can now descend easily into a magnificent cavern of crystal stalactites and stalagmites which surround a deep lake of azure blue. Exploring Bermuda, one comes across the footsteps of Twain everywhere. Besides the bronze of the writer at the Hamilton Princess, another statue stands inside the Bank of

Butterfield and an imposing bronze bust is in the front entrance of XL Capital’s Bermudiana Road building. During a most memorable meal at the historic Waterlot Inn, a charming dockside restaurant established in 1670, I am told by my waiter that Twain was once a frequent diner. I’m not surprised. The inn can’t be surpassed for history, local charm and quality of food. As Twain grew older, he spent more and more time visiting the island — so much so that he fought to ban cars here. Though the bustle of vehicles is apparent now, no rental cars are available for island visitors. The best way to get around is by taxis or motor bikes, which are fun, if a little dangerous. Other modes of island travel are ferries, horse-drawn carriages (favoured by Twain), and an extensive and friendly bus system. As travellers still do, Twain encountered something very special during his first visit to Bermuda, and went back to seek it there again and again. “You go to heaven if you want to,” Twain wrote from Bermuda in 1910 during his last visit, “I’d rather stay here.” The writer seemingly got his wish – though he died shortly afterwards, he seems to live on in this island paradise. I used to love snow and winter when I was young and able to ski through the woods or walk under a starry sky feeling the snowflakes melting on my face and hearing the crunch of the snow beneath my boots. Now I despair when snow falls, and the thought of being housebound as it piles up produces an unreasonable level of anxiety. Someone comes to shovel the snow off my walk pat black and around my car but pushing my walker through the snow, avoiding drifts and walking on the icy patches to get to my car adds to muscle and bone aches and fatigue. That is after my arms are already sore and tired from putting on boots and layers of clothes. No wonder some seniors stay isolated in their homes in winter. Each trip outside is such an effort.

I don’t think when I was able-bodied I ever gave winter and the struggle of those with disabilities a thought; it never entered my mind that this season of beauty could be so difficult and threatening for some. I am glad that I have so many memories of good times playing in the snow and the sound of blades ringing on the ice of an outdoor rink, breaths rising in the freezing air. I take comfort in those memories and relive the joy. But the reality is that it is very hard in winter for seniors and others with physical difficulties to get around and we need all the help we can get. So if you are able, and know of someone who isn’t, please give them a hand. Bringing in a garbage pail, shoveling a pathway or sidewalk, removing snow from a porch roof, getting groceries for them, any task that helps make it easier for someone less able is a blessing. He had been downtown, going to two of our banks, around 9 a.m. and was horrified to see that outside each bank the sidewalks were a sheet of ice where even he, in his professional snow boots, could hardly keep his footing. He told the manager of both banks about the ice problem and his concern that some senior or others could not negotiate the slippery ice and would fall. The response from both managers was “Sorry about that but their snow removal service just had not come yet.” My son was furious with this nonchalant response and checked with the bylaw office to be told that citizens have up to eight hours to remove snow before they could do anything about this. You know this is not acceptable. Surely some other solution should be reached to prevent someone breaking their hip or sustaining other injuries. These teams are trained to review and assess individual cases and determine the next plan of action. Action may include just reporting to pushing the issue to the Institutional Steering Committee who have special training in dealing with violent behaviour and who will consult the RCMP if necessary. Okanagan College isn’t the only institution in Canada that has developed these types of protocols. All schools try to ensure there are mechanisms in place to provide the safest environment possible for students and staff. Not an easy task – but something that can’t be taken for granted. There are often a number of signs that trained individuals can recognize and through intervention can usually stop something terrible from happening. Behaviour by those most likely to commit a violent act include previous violent behavior with intent to harm or kill, verbal or written threats to kill or harm, possession of a weapon (even if it’s a replica), bomb threats (including making a bomb), fire setting, sexual intimidation or assault, and gang related intimidation and violence. All of these behaviours are warning signs that an intervention should occur. Since Kevin Cameron’s training, Okanagan College has implemented a Violence Threat/Risk Assessment protocol. Part of the protocol was the creation of a security manual which provides information on how to identify high risk behaviours and the need to report this behavior, procedures in regards to bomb threats, weapons and lethal violence which

YOU AND THE LAW WILLS VARIATION A general principle of law is that a person making a Will (the “Testator”) has the “testamentary freedom” to dispose of his or her property as he or she wishes. An important exception in British Columbia is set forth in the Wills Variation Act which provides that a spouse or child of the Testator may apply to Court to vary the Will to provide for an “adequate, just and equitable” variation. In a successful lawsuit the Will is not ruled invalid but it is changed or varied. Only the Testator’s spouse or children (biological or formally adopted) may apply to vary the Testator’s Will under the Act. There are no restrictions on which children may apply under the Act, whether they be minors or adults, dependent or self-sufficient.

If a spouse or child wishes to apply to vary the Will, they must do so by commencing an Action within six months from the date probate of the Will is granted.

When Dr. Tanner Udenberg prescribes glasses for his patients in Canada, he can be fairly certain they will have the prescription filled and then they will get on with their lives. When he prescribes glasses for patients on his optometry trips to Third World countries, he sees lives changed when he is able to give them glasses. “Sometimes people are getting their first pair of glasses and they haven’t realized how much they couldn’t see. We have had some really good experiences. There was a mother on our Nicaragua trip last year who had a high prescription. When we got closer to her prescription and she could see more clearly, she started crying. When she got her glasses, she called her children over and touched their faces. She had never seen her kids’ faces clearly before. It was very powerful,” said Udenberg, who has also done optometry assistance trips to Thailand, Mexico and Fiji. The trip to Nicaragua with his wife, Renée, was with Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity, an international organization. Udenberg, a Kalamalka secondary school graduate who has a degree in pharmacology from the University of Alberta and in optometry from the University of Waterloo, moved back to Vernon last fall, after practising in Edmonton. He got interested in volunteer medical services when he was in university and accompanied his father, Dr. Terrill Udenberg, on a veterinary services trip. “We did several clinics in Nicaragua. I was the only optometrist because the others had cancelled so we were working 14 hours a day and seeing more than 100 people a

day, ages five to 91, helping them with used glasses that had been donated. When people get a decent prescription, it’s an instant change in their lives, like giving them a whole new life. They can go to school, get a job and function better in day to day living,” said Udenberg. “Having glasses is something we take for granted here but for them it’s a whole new world. Not many things impact life in such a big way. I want to use the skills I have and do more.”

The volunteers take their own equipment, as well as the donated glasses, because the clinic space is often basic, in a school, church or unused building. “In Fiji, we were under the trees and had the vision chart tacked onto a tree. We went to some very remote islands by boat and trekked into the hills where there were villages of only a few tin-roofed houses. We work with what we have and do the job we came to do. It’s a humbling and rewarding experience,” he said. He recalled a teenager in Nicaragua who had one func-

tional eye who was laughing and smiling when he got glasses and giving the universal thumbs up sign of approval. “We’re all just people and we communicate even if we don’t speak the same language. There was a young man in Thailand who has a very high prescription, legally blind and we were able to help him with glasses. His life will be much better now that he has some sight. The people are very grateful and humble and say thank you and ask us to come back and invite us to their homes and show us around. A little girl in Thailand gave me a bracelet she had made. That was very touching.” Udenberg said seeing how things are in other countries has made him more grateful to have grown up in Canada and had an education he can use to help others. “If I can help a few people, I should be doing that. I want to make that difference in people’s lives and I will do more trips, hopefully another one this year. Let the games begin

deck of cards, a book and a ball and you can be entertained for hours, without batteries, or an energy source other than the power of your mind and body. This last couple of weeks I have come to appreciate how much fun games can be. It started with us being introduced in the summer to a game called Catch Phrase. Finally a place where my knowledge of current entertainment trivia has a use. Playing with teams of at least two people on each, you are given a phrase which you try Michele Blais to get your partner to guess through your clues, no rhyming or hand gesturing, and you are timed with a clock that goes faster as time runs out. We played this game several times over the holidays and I laughed till I cried. Maybe it’s the creative way people try to describe their phrase, the fast thinkers or the ponderers, the clock ticking and the competitiveness that makes it all fun. As a family we have had a great deal of fun with it, add in the company and talents of some good friends and it makes for a great evening. On a winter holiday we brought the crib board, cards and catch phrase and have played these every day and had a great time whether in the airport, on the beach, in our rooms or tucked into a corner in our favourite bar. Other crib players swarm like hawks offering to play a game. Games can have universal rules so are appealing to so many. Like crib, euchre, poker, Blackjack, and on and on, it’s an instant way to strike up a conversation or engage. Backgammon or chess played in city parks draw many observers and players of all ages and nationalities to come play, watch and learn. Bring out a ball and you can play a variety of games depending on the size of it, and without sharing the same language people can join in and

enjoy themselves. A tennis ball on a backpack hiking trip brought the boys lots of pleasure and creative options for creating new games to play. Who would have thought throwing a ball through tree branches was a game? Learning is a big part of a game and why so many families and educators like to include games in their family activities and curriculum. My oldest learned to play chess in Grant Bingham’s Grade 4 math class and then taught his brother and I. I particularly enjoyed being the student and my son as the teacher, and so did he. Math skills, thinking skills, problem solving, learning to follow rules, when it’s OK to bend rules, social behaviors and then if you want to get into the psychology of it the various personalities that come out in the playing of games are all part of the benefits of these activities. As a kid we played hours of cards around the big round dining room table. Our high school cafeteria held a euchre tournament every lunch hour, with tables and tables full of players. I never mastered that game and had the attention span of a fly so was often replaced. With my kids we played a variety of games: Scrabble, Monopoly, Risk, Trouble, and these have found their way to the cottage now. I personally got out of games over the years and preferred conversation to game playing, however after many great evenings with friends playing games I see the value once again. As we age, games can be a positive way to keep the mind sharp, to socialize and laugh, and laugh and laugh. Competitiveness is part of it, learning to win without gloating, or losing gracefully are part of the process. Winning and losing are life lessons and very important for children and adults to learn. The games can become great stories in themselves as we share our adventures the next day or in days to come. Whether because you are snowed in at home, in an airport, or just wanting a nice way to connect with friends and family, bring out the cards, boards, or machines, and let the games begin.

ullcar & Deep Creek Hall is the oldest community hall in the Spallumcheen Valley. Opened in 1909 and built with donated lumber, land and volunteer labour, this tradition is continuing. The Hullcar & Deep Creek Hall Society has been fortunate to receive such items as a drilled well, septic system, water system, donations for electrical, drywall installation, siding installation and much more. The Hullcar Community hall has been fundraising since the mid-’90s and the directors and executive are grateful for the community’s support for the fundraisers held such as pancake breakfasts, dances and homebased business markets. Pipe bands do much more than just blow wind Kalamalka Highlanders and Arran Campbell Memorial Pipe Bands prepare for annual Robbie Burns dinner and some major events this year Kristin Froneman Morning Star Staff

It’s that time of year again when the Scottish community fish their tartan kilts and sporran pouches out of the closet to celebrate the birthday of the most famous Scot in history. And Vernon is no exception. Scheduled for Jan. 26 at the Vernon Recreation Centre, the Kalamalka Highlanders (KHPB) and Arran Campbell Memorial (ACMPB) Pipe Bands are raising a glass and their bagpipes and drumsticks to 18th century Scottish bard Robbie Burns. “It’s the cultural event for those who are Scottish or for those who want to be Scottish,” said KHPB president Norm Crerar. The night consists of a traditional supper of tatties (potatoes) and bashed neeps (turnips), haggis, as well as roast beef or veggie fare for those who don’t want to eat sheep’s pluck. There’s also the piping in and address of the haggis, the toast to the lassies, and readings of Burns’ poetry, Scottish vernacular and all. “We’ll have some pipe music and we finish the evening with the Scottish Country Dancers, with lessons included so everyone can dance,” said Crerar. The Burns supper is a major fundraiser for both the senior (KHPB) and youth (ACMPB) bands, who are some of the busiest musicians around. “We do an average of 30

performances a year and most of them are non-revenue for not-for-profit organizations,” said Crerar. Whether pipes are a-blaring at the annual Santas Anonymous Pub Crawl, or drums rat-a-tatting at the Vernon Winter Carnival parade, the two groups make their presence known. “This year our pub crawl raised $3,900 in just a couple of hours for Santas Anonymous in early December,” said Crerar. Band members also make regular appearances at charitable events such as Run for the Cure, Do it for Dad, Relay for Cancer, as well as for community functions such as Canada Day, the Interior Provincial Exhibition parade, Lumby Days, and of course, Remembrance Day. This past November, both bands performed during the halftime show between CFL teams the B.C. Lions and Saskatchewan Roughriders at B.C. Place. The show was a salute to veterans, and included military and pipe bands from around B.C., said Crerar. Now under the direction of pipe major Gord Mathers, the bands are planning for some other major events this year. First and foremost is the inaugural Okanagan International Tattoo (a festival of military music, ceremony, entertainment and more) scheduled to take place at Vernon’s Wesbild Centre on the August long weekend. “There is lots of enthu-

We have Kelly March from the army cadet band and others helping,” said Crerar. “We’re leaning on the history and importance of the army and the cadet camp, highlighting what youth do.” Besides pipe, cadet and other military bands, there will be Highland and Ukrainian dance, taiko drumming and more, he added. The event should also bring attention to the Arran Campbell Memorial band, named after the late Vernon drummer and member of the world champion SFU Pipe Band, which is planning to

Renown psychic to visit Tour brings internationally known spiritual medium and author Sylvia Browne to Vernon Morning Star Staff

American psychic and spiritual teacher Sylvia Browne is stopping at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre on April 2 as part of her 50th anniversary tour. An author, lecturer and researcher in the field of parapsychology, this will be the first visit by Brown to the area, said event promoter F.J. Hurtak of Kootenay Concerts, adding he has been trying to book a tour with Browne for many years since he attended one of her lectures in Calgary. “There were about 2,200 people in the building, and I was likely one of the biggest skeptics there, but once you get a chance to listen to her and then see her in action, you quickly realize that she has abilities that can give all of us an insight into our own lives, and the other side,” he said. “This will be a truly remarkable evening, and a once in a lifetime chance for Vernon residents to see someone with such a unique gift.” Said to have manifested her psychic abilities at the age of three in her hometown of Kansas City, Browne shared her gift with friends and family for many years before helping other people to see their future. In 1974, she founded the Nirvana Foundation for Psychic Research, a nonprofit organization (now known as the Sylvia Browne Corporation). Since then she has helped thousands of people gain control of their lives, live more happily, understand the meaning of life, and to find God in their own unique way.

Remake, recycle and re-release

very new year we find ourselves looking ahead, rather than back. We thought we would share our impressions of what Hollywood has in store for us all in 2013. We fear the worst but hope for the best in what promises to be Taylor & Howe the year of the already told and already seen. TAYLOR: It probably seems to readers that we are down on remakes and sequels, often referring to them as unoriginal. To a degree, I guess we are, but for the most part we are only down on the bad ones. This year, I’m actually looking forward to a few. At the top of my list is a remake of one of my all-time favourite horror films The Evil Dead. It looks like demented fun. The original was heartfelt but cheap, the new one looks glossy. I’m also looking forward to Star Trek: Into Darkness. The first Star Trek (rather, the latest version), directed by J.J. Abrams, was very good and I quite like the new, young cast. HOWE: And for the superhero fans there are lots of movies for you. Robert Downey Jr. is back as Tony Stark in Iron Man 3 and the mighty Thor returns in The Dark Worlds. But the one I’m most looking forward to from the comic book genre is The Wolverine. Hugh Jackman is fantastic as the reluctant hero, who travels to Japan to train

Can my pet suffer from allergies?

I am continually amazed by the number of dogs and cats we see suffering from allergic disease. Allergies are commonly associated with respiratory disease, (wheezing and coughing), as well as stomach and intestinal ailments, (diarrhea,indigestion, vomiting). However, dogs and cats are most often presented to the clinic with skin as the primary organ affected. Allergic skin disease will present as itching and reddening or darkening of the skin in the groin and armpits, a variety of skin infections, sores, rashes, and often ear involvement that will not resolve with medications alone. Some of these are food allergies and can be solved easily with diet manipulation. Others, will be lifelong, but treatable with proper diet and medications. If your pet suffers from skin or ear inflammation that does not resolve, allergic disease may be the cause and your Veterinarian can help you address this problem.
