More Tools to Better Train You
As a CHEK Exercise Coach, I have been trained to test core strength and detect muscular imbalances with measurements such as thoracic curve, lumbar curve, first rib angle, etc. This information allows me to create exercise programs tailored to my clients’ needs. I have also been offering holistic lifestyle coachAurélie ing which consists in assessing Wiedemann nutrition, sleep and wake cycles, digestion, fungus/parasites and stress levels. A few months ago, I flew to San Diego California and completed the CHEK Practitioner Level One certification, which is the next advancement of the CHEK Exercise Coach program. This seminar was fascinating and upon its completion, I incorporated additional measurements such as muscle length tension, spinal motion and primal pattern functionality to my assessments. There are seven primal patterns (lunge, squat, push, pull, bend, twist and gait) and detection of core deficiencies as well as alignment problems while performing these exercises is of foremost importance to help correct posture in motion. This new assessment methodology also allows me to determine how functional a client is and where to start them within their exercise program. Since my return from the certification training, I have also integrated my newfound awareness regarding nutrition. Many people have intolerances to gluten, milk products and/or soy products. Intolerances aren’t allergies, rather they are minor reactions to a product. If the products in question are consumed in excess, however, intolerances can strengthen and prevent the digestive tract from working properly. In fact, carrying fat around the belly is one of the first indicators of food intolerances. That being said, everyone is different and thus individual assessments are necessary. I really enjoyed everything I learned this year and can’t wait for next year. I’ve already signed up for the CHEK Practitioner level 2 certification in order to continue to provide the most advanced, complete and personalized approach to training. For more information on the services I offer at Sattva Training Centre, contact me at 250-464-4046 or sattvatraining@gmail.com to book a free consultation. Winter Session
Jan 20th, 2013 until March 9th, 2013
On Sept 15, 2012, the Kimberley RCMP and Speedwatch held their annual charity golf tournament at Kimberley Golf Course, raising over $5,800. In December the funds were distributed to a number of sports organizations in Kimberly. Seven local clubs received between $400 and $900. These included, Kimberley Minor Hockey, to allow persons to have better access to their programs, McKim School, to facilitate a grade 4 and 5 swim program, Northstar Figure Skaters, to assist in purchasing a theatrical curtain, Kimberly Minor Baseball and Kimberley Soccer Association, to purchase a line marker for the fields. Kimberley Jackrabbit Ski program, to purchase training equipment, Kimberley Seahorse Swim program, to assist with the purchase of training equipment. A grant of $1,250 was given to the Kimberley Ambulance Society’s Memorial Education Fund. This is in recognition of the two ambulance attendants, Kim Weitzel and Shawn Currier who tragically lost their lives in 2006 while on duty. In addition a public swim session was purchased to promote physical fitness and family fun in the community. The tournament saw a record number of golfers (110) this year. But this endeavor would not have been possible without the generous support of the community business.

schedules and organize your timetable in consequence. As renovators are generally more concerned by the quality of their work rather than the dirt and dust it produces, the contents of the rooms to be renovated should be removed, if possible, and other rooms protected from dust by closing their doors. Clothes should be stored carefully and perishable foods sealed to avoid them becoming impregnated with odours and dust. If you have a pet you could try and find it a more comfortable and less traumatizing home for the duration of the renovations. If you have young children living with you, keep them busy with outdoor activities. Every evening throw out any debris, clean up accumulated dust, and secure the worksite to avoid any risk of injury.

CBT leader retires after nearly two decades Submitted Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) thanks and extends its best wishes to Garry Merkel, the outgoing Chair of its Board of Directors. From Kimberley, Merkel was instrumental in the formation of CBT, first as part of the committee that negotiated with the Province of BC for the establishment of CBT, and then as a founding member of CBT’s Board. He served as Vice-Chair from 1995 to 2006, then Chair from 2006 to 2012. “On behalf of CBT’s Board and staff, I would like to thank Garry and acknowledge his many contributions; his input and leadership over the course of 18 years has been invaluable,” said Greg Deck, CBT’s new Board Chair. “Garry’s impact on CBT-and through CBT, on the Columbia Basin-cannot be overemphasized.” Deck, from Radium Hot Springs, is replacing Merkel as Chair. He has been on the Board since CBT’s inception in 1995, serving as ViceChair from 2008 to the end of 2012. Nakusp’s Laurie Page, who joined the Board in January 2012, is taking over as Vice-Chair. “Greg helped found CBT and throughout the years has provided expert guidance and leadership to CBT, as well as to other local governments and organizations,” said Merkel. “In Laurie’s year with us, she has provided significant direction to the Board and has stood out through her outstanding efforts as a community volunteer. I also welcome Rick Jensen to the Board, and am pleased I can leave the governance of CBT in such capable hands.”
Jensen joins the Board from Cranbrook, where he is President and CEO of Panorama Mountain Village, the Board Chair of New Dawn Developments, a director of New Dawn Restorations and President of the Canadian Institute of Excellence. Other Board members include Denise Birdstone (Ktunaxa Nation
government: six from among the nominees of the five regional districts and the Ktunaxa Nation Council and six others. All directors must be residents of the Basin. The Board meets six times a year in commu-

at 4 p.m. at the Hillcrest Hotel (2100 Oak Drive). For more information about the Board, and to read highlights and minutes from Board meetings, visit www.cbt.org/ board.

Inside a book on the history of one of Scotland’s oldest familyowned distilleries the inscription reads, “To Evan: Calgary’s Glenfarclas Ambassador.” I smiled when my oldest son showed me the book during our Christmas holiday, thinking about the history that leads to the inscription. When we moved to Creston in 1979,one of the drinks of choice among my co-workers and their spouses was single malt whisky. (Note: it’s whisky without the E, in the British Isles and Commonwealth countries. In the United States, it’s whiskey.) At that time there were likely only two choices on the liquor store shelf: Glenfiddich and Glenfiddich. It’s hard to believe that it was only in the 1960s that Glenfiddich began to market single malt whisky (a looselydefined phrase for a whisky made in a single distillery from malted barley). Until then, references to “scotch” meant whiskys blended from the products of two or more distilleries. The aforementioned Evan was born on a Friday the 13th in 1980. Soon after I was presented with a “new father’s emergency kit”. Included were a number of small bottles with labels like “baby oil” and “gripe water”. My coworkers gleefully pointed out that the bottles’ contents had all been replaced with Glenfiddich. Emergency, indeed!
Evan, senior bartender and budding supervisor at the Calgary Petroleum Club, is a very knowledgeable wine guy. But when it comes to single malt whisky, he’s a walking encyclopedia. He is often hired to pour at whisky events, often by the local Glenfarclas importer. One of the items on my admittedly lengthy and everchanging bucket list is to travel to Scotland with him so that we can visit some of our favourite distilleries. He wouldn’t need much persuasion. Back to the emergence of single malt whisky. Until distillers like Glenfiddich began to promote whisky made only in their distillery, the market thought of “scotch” was Chivas Regal and the like. Distilleries were closing at a remarkable rate as small, family-owned enterprises being unable to cope with the challenges of what had become, by necessity, an international market. Today, a handful of global corporations dominate the whisky landscape, most of which have holdings of luxury brands from around the world. But what about the whisky itself? Water is the first key. Initially, it is added to barley to promote its germination, a process called malting. Later once the germinated grain is dried, it is mixed once again with water to create a mash, which then is then fermented, with yeast, converting sugars into alcohol. Distilation takes place, sometimes three times and result is a liquid with a 60 to 70
per cent alcohol content. The spirit is then aged in oak casks for a minimum of three years and often much longer. Typically, the casks are of American oak and have been used at least once to age bourbon. There are many variations along the way that make one distillery’s product different from others. In drying the sprouted barley, for instance, the heat might be provided by burning peat, which imparts a smoky flavour. In the past, distilleries were built in close proximity to where necessary ingredients were grown or found. Hence the handful of whisky makers on the tiny island of Islay (eye-lah), where peat is cut from bogs and used to influence the flavour of the malt. An Islay whisky is almost certain to have a heavy dose of smoke. Aged whiskys might also be put into different casks, ones that have used for sherry, for instance, to add more flavour and complexity before bottling. Today the international market is lapping up single malts at an unprecedented rate. Production at existing distilleries is being amped up, old and unused distilleries are being brought into production again and new ones are under construction. It’s all been a tremendous boost to the Scottish rural economy, with distillery tourism have pretty much the same appeal as wine tourism. As the Scots say, Slainte!

The 2013 Jeep Wrangler has the power and sure-footedness to take you into the backcountry while still being a uniquely driveable vehicle in city traffic. Overall: To stay on top as on off-roader, the Wrangler introduces significant comfort and convenience improvements for 2013, despite doing quite a lot over the last couple of years. Drivetrain: The 3.6-litre V6 makes 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque; six-speed manual transmissions, or optional six-speed automatics play their part to minimize fuel consumption. You could refer to the Jeep Wrangler as the Volkswagen Beetle of the sport utility world because of its longevity. The legendary off-roader enjoys a hard-core following; people who fearlessly dare to use these rugged rascals the way they’re in-
tended. Of course not everyone goes boulder-hopping and canyon-crawling in their Wranglers (the Jeep, not the Jeans), but both groups will appreciate the newly designed seats with improved bolstering (and available Katzkin-brand black leather) in front and added support when the road or trail gets rough. The back seat of the four-door Unlimited model as well as the soft top both now fold more easily using, amazingly, just one hand. Finally both two- and fourdoor Wranglers can be ordered with a premium top that’s claimed to be easier to clean while its three layers add a degree of noise insulation. Jeep claims the lid is also easier to fasten. (Yes, we
had to read that twice, too.) Unchanged is the Chryslerdesigned 285-horsepower V6 that connects to either a six-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. The combo provides for a l/100 km rating of 12.7 city and 9.3 highway (Unlimited models fare a little worse). Base Sport, Sport, Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon trim levels continue; the first two feature parttime four-wheel-drive with optional limited-slip rear differential. The tough-customer Rubicon uses the OffRoad Rock-Trac unit with its extra-low-range gearing, front/rear-locking differentials for greater agility and 32-inch off-road rubber.
The Sonata remains the leader in affordability and pure driving fun. Overall: With virtually every other Hyundai model being updated, replaced or dropped, the Sonata is actually flying below the radar for 2013; new 2.4 SE in Canada with tons of goodies. Drivetrain: Hyundai’s only gas-electric hybrid system complements two fourcylinder gasoline power choices (one of them turbocharged); six-speed automatic transmissions all around. Hyundai dropped the gauntlet with the 2011 Sonata, which was a new sedan in no way similar to its predecessor. And it waited while its main competitors figured out their responses. Currently, the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Chevrolet Malibu and Ford
Fusion are all either on the ground or coming soon, and several of them are following the Sonata’s philosophy of four-cylinder greatness (as in no more V6). The base engine remains a 198-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder (200 horses with the optional dual exhaust), or for more power there’s a 274-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. As well, the Sonata Hybrid operates with a 169-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder connected to a 30-kilowatt (40-horsepower) electric motor for a net output of 209 horsepower. The Hybrid’s other critical ingredient is the use of a 270-volt lithium-polymer battery that helps the car reach speeds up to 100 km-h on electric power alone, topping its direct competitors. The ve-

hicle’s 5.4 l/100 km city and 4.6 highway is near top of the class, but is not quite as good as the latest hybrid offerings from Ford and Toyota. The base 2.4 is connected to a six-speed manual transmission, or optional sixspeed automatic, while both the turbocharged engine and the Hybrid employ only sixspeed automatics. Base GL Sonatas include the usual power-operated controls plus air conditioning, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth short-range wireless networking and keyless push-button start. The next-up GLS bulks up with a power driver’s seat and heated front and rear seat, while a new SE model adds leather seating, 18-inch wheels plus the Turbo model’s suspension.

with fun. Mushers will often put a puppy in a harness to pull a small object. At six or more months, the puppy joins a small team of older dogs. It is critical that this first effort at running be a positive experience. The musher’s goal is to let the dog enjoy its instinctive behavior in a safe environment. Training begins in earnest when the dogs are yearlings. Most mushers start training in the fall as soon as it is cool enough for the dogs to run comfortably. Fall training is usually cart or 4 wheeler training. The goals of fall training are several. Dogs must build up their aerobic condition and muscle strength and learn to run as a team. Young dogs learn how to ignore distractions, respond to commands, and handle different trail conditions. As the training progresses and the months turn cooler, the dog become tougher and able to run further and faster. The experienced driver shuffles dogs around in different positions on the team seeking to find the position that best matches the dog’s unique abilities. The driver studies his team, learning each dogs individual traits and habits. Most importantly, the driver builds each dog’s confidence in their athletic ability until the whole team of canine competitors is convinced there is not another dog team in the world that can run as fast or as far as they can!
