While the B.C. provincial election is approaching, the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing Grand Forks has resigned from the B.C. Liberal party. Boundary-Similkameen MLA John Slater filed his application back in September and on Monday he learned that the Liberals won’t be endorsing him as a candidate. Slater was told that the Liberals thought a new candidate would have a better chance of winning the riding. “I’ve put a lot of work into this riding, I feel that I did a good job for the members of the Boundary-Similkameen and I’m a little bit hurt,” Slater told the Grand Forks Gazette. “But they made their decision and they’ll have to live with it.” Slater said he is undecided if he’ll run again in May’s provincial election but will sit as an independent until then. “I haven’t quite thought that through,” he said when asked if he would run again. “I’ll keep working in my riding. There’s still stuff to be done. How effective I’m going to be is a big question. If they’re shunning

me and they’re not going to give my riding any money, that’s bad.” Slater is also disappointed that the party waited until now to inform him of its decision not to endorse him. “They could’ve told me in September that they didn’t want me. Why wait that long? I just don’t get that,” he said. There have been reports the Liberals approached former Oliver, B.C. Coun. Linda Larson to run and in fact, Larson was said to have announced she will seek the party’s nomination as Slater’s replacement. A call to the Liberals’ office in Vancouver was not immediately returned however; in a statement, the Liberals said Slater’s candidacy was not approved due to “personal issues.” Last week, Sam Oliphant, a spokesperson for the B.C. Liberals, told the Gazette the party was close to having all MLA candidates nominated. “There’s no drop-date or anything like that, it’s a matter of just working through that process between here at the central party and with the riding and the other people involved,” Oliphant said. The controversial Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) is scheduled for all School District 51 (SD51) students in Grades 4 and 7 through to Feb. 22. The province-wide assessment consists of three tests in reading, writing and numeracy skills. The value of the test has been questioned over the years by educators, especially since the results have been used by the Fraser Institute to rank schools in the institute’s annual school ranking’s report card. Both SD51 Superintendent Mi-
chael Strukoff and Perley Elementary School Principal Kevin Argue see the FSA as a supplement to the variety of assessments regularly done by teachers. “This is a snapshot,” Strukoff said. “It’s not the be all and end all but it shows us some places where we need to do some work.” He added, “We do our own reading and writing assessment from Grade 1 to Grade 9 in the fall and the spring and we have a numeracy assessment of our own, as well what was developed by a district on Vancouver Island.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Grand Forks Border Bruins on 20-game win streak in 1993 1908 The Grand Forks Hockey Club was organized at a meeting of local enthusiasts, with J.S. Jost elected president, Chas Haverty, secretary-treasurer, and Roy Curran, manager. 1913 F.J. Hart, J.A. Augur and C.R. Drayton arrived from Vancouver to inspect the local Doukhobor property with a view to granting the society a substantial loan. 1918 Dr. G.H. Acres agreed to allow his name to stand for re-election as mayor in the forthcoming civic election. 1923 Farmers of the district met and voted unanimously for the amalgamation of the various existing farm organizations into a single organization, namely the Grand Forks Agricultural Association. 1928 The roof of the curling rink collapsed under the heavy weight of accumulated snow. 1933 The matter of compensation to William B. Glanville by the City of Grand Forks for lands flooded by reason of the Granby dam alterations was to be put before an arbitration board. 1938 Oscar Pennoyer tendered his resignation as manager of the Grand Forks Growers’ Exchange in order to give more time to his ranch interests. 1943 Louis Bosshart, aged 73, pioneer of the Greenwood district, died in the Greenwood hospital. Born in Switzer-
land, he came to Greenwood as a prospector in the early 1980s. 1948 A fire believed to have been started by a large charge of dynamite, completely gutted the Burns building on New Year’s Eve. The initial explosion, heard by residents throughout the city, occurred at the premises occupied by the Sunshine Valley Co-op. 1953 Sam Talarico, proprietor of the Valley Market since 1931, retired from active participation in the business, having sold his interest to two of his sons, Adolph and Gino. 1958 Council passed a bylaw authorizing the borrowing of $22,500 to complete the $326,000 needed to pay for the newly installed city sewer system. 1963 Public Freightways Ltd. was awarded a long-term contract to transport 1,200 tons of copper concentrate per month from the Phoenix Copper to North Vancouver for shipment to Japan. 1968 John A. Hutton, 91, passed away Dec. 25 at the Boundary Hospital. 1973 Two days before Christmas, Jim Corrigan, for some years associated with the Grand Forks Figure Skating Club, passed away. 1978 The first new citizen of the year arriving at the Boundary Hospital was born Jan. 2 at 5:23 a.m. to Sharon and Dave Marshall. Edan, nine pounds, is the couple’s first child.
Pet of the Week
1988 Phyllis Lazeroff, who won $5,000 Jan. 5, wasn’t the only lucky lottery winner in Grand Forks this month. Rick Popoff scratched a $1,000 ticket at the downtown Shell last week. 1993 The Grand Forks Border Bruins swept three games last week to extend their current winning streak to 20 straight. 1998 When she picked up her RDKB agenda package, Midway councillor Marguerite Rotvold was surprised to learn there was talk about a province-wide 9-1-1 service. She said her concern was the possible disparity of the cost of the service among different regions. 2003 Grand Forks City Council has approved, in principal, a $1.25-million offer from Westfair Properties for the empty 15-acre lot at Highway 3 and Spraggett Road. Westfair Properties operates nearly 100 Extra Foods, Real Canadian Superstore and Real Canadian Wholesale Club stores in western Canada. 2008 Separate avalanches earlier in the week killed three people, including a Grand Forks man snowmobiling in the Wilderness Creek area. There were also fatalities suffered in incidences in the Christian Valley and Big White Ski Resort near Kelowna. According to the Canadian Avalanche Centre, precipitation amounts this winter saw little snow early in the season with cold temperatures that weakened the snow pack.

Lilgert enters not guilty plea
Gazette Staff
The man piloting a B.C. Ferry that struck an island and sank in 2006 has entered a not guilty plea regarding two charges of criminal negligence causing death. Karl Lilgert, who has resided in Grand Forks, is accused of criminal negligence causing death in an incident where the Queen of the North ferry hit Gil Island, which is located
on the north coast of B.C. Gerald Foisy and Shirley Rosette went down with the ferry and their bodies were never recovered – the other passengers and crew survived. Jury selection has begun for the trial, which is set for this Thursday and could last six months. A call to Lilgert was placed but was not returned by press time.
Controversial Foundation Skills Assessment testing begins CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
Strukoff was pleased with the overall performance of SD51 students in the 2011 FSA as indicated by ministry statistics. “For the most part, we were pleased with our results; we were above provincial averages,” he said. Argue said that the tests primarily serve to confirm teachers’ assessments of their students in a general way. “For the most part, you are usually aware of the student’s level before the final test that you give them,” he said. “There are a few anomalies but for the most part, it reinforces what the teachers know. My teachers day-to-day work with students is a much more valuable piece of information to do our planning on but this is one where you can compare provincially where you are at, which is something you can’t do with the Grade 4 monthly math test.” Peter Cowley, the person responsible for the Fraser Institute’s annual school report cards believes the FSA serves an important purpose for both parents and educators. He feels that the standardized province-wide tests are the best, most objective measure of student, and therefore school, performance. “That’s the only way you are going to be able to compare schools. We do the report card so that parents can compare one
school with another on some objective measure of something,” he said. “Having that kind of testing benefits all the kids who go to elementary school in B.C. Without these tests, you have no way to determine which schools do a good job, which are successful and which aren’t.” Cowley maintained that comparing schools is vital to improving education for all. “Of course there should be measures; of course there should be province-wide tests. It is so simple and so obvious that one worries a great deal about people who say we should get rid of it,” he explained. The FSAs’ importance is seen differently by Argue. “We can predict how many students are not meeting expectations pretty accurately before that test. We have more local information, which is probably more accurate than a one-day snapshot. The daily barometer (of student performance) is what guides teachers’ practice,” he said. Cowley sees the school report card as the only true measure of accountability that is available. “In the report card you will see year after year, those schools showing low performance and no improvement. Somebody needs to take responsibility for that and then once they’ve taken responsibility for it, they’ve got to do something about it because no school should be allowed to say, ‘We can’t do better. We can’t improve.’ You don’t want to sell kids short. Let’s find
a way to help them start improving,” he said. When asked if it was valid to compare a public school in northern B.C. to a private school like Crofton House in Vancouver, Cowley said that wasn’t the point of the report card. The most important comparisons that parents and educators should make, he said, are between schools with similar demographics, and that such comparisons were a strong argument to make sure the FSA continues to be administered. “Say the ministry in future governments gets rid of the tests, which I sincerely hope they don’t, and you ask them, ‘We’re interested in the best schools in the province, from the point-of-view of the ones that have done the best job in getting great results for kids that come from poor families. Which ones are they?’ Your minister will not be able to tell you. Now is that wise to get into a position where you won’t be able to find best practices because there is no measure of it?” he asked. Susan Lambert, president of the British Columbia Teachers Federation, said in a recent CBC radio interview that the FSA was in complete contradiction of the current Ministry of Education policy calling for innovation, creativity and personalization. Norm Sabourin, the Boundary District Teachers’ Association president was unavailable for comment.

FSAs results wrong for Fraser Institute For many, the elementary to high school years can be trying, as students try to “find themselves” as they mature into adults. Bullying can occur and students can feel alienated as cliques form amongst the student population – popularity and social standing desired. Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) testing began on Monday and will continue until Feb. 22. The tests occur across the province, are made up of reading, writing and numeracy skill components and are controversial, as results are used by the Fraser Institute – a think tank said to lean to the right – for its annual report card, which ranks province schools. The local teachers union has spoken against the testing, saying it is a misuse of data and tends to favour private schools while School District 51 says that it is a supplement to the assessment done by teachers. Testing students is necessary but allowing the Fraser Institute to take the results is not. Peter Cowley, the institute’s senior vice-president of operations and director of school performance studies, says the FSAs are important and standardized tests across the province are “the most objective measure of student, and therefore school performance.” He says the rankings are done so parents can compare one school with another. However, not all schools are created equally and there has been criticism that the Fraser Institute’s report card favours private schools, as private schools can control enrolment, as opposed to public schools, which accepts all students. One has to question why the Fraser Institute should be ranking schools at all. According to information on its website, the institute isn’t an educational think tank but rather, one that has a vision of “a free and prosperous world where individuals benefit from greater choice, competitive markets and personal responsibility.” Furthermore, its mission is to “measure, study and communicate the impact of competitive markets and government interventions on the welfare of individuals.” That isn’t a vision or mission statement of an organization that has the best interests of students and education at heart. Given the Fraser Institute’s mission statement and objectives, it shouldn’t be taking FSA results and using them to rank schools. This isn’t a popularity contest and while the FSAs are related to education, ranking schools based on results is wrong. After all, this isn’t high school.
Question of the Week
from www.grandforksgazette.ca Do you think the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre should be expanded?
YES 58%
There is a time and place for everything and B.C. Premier Christy Clark of all people should know this, as she has experience not only in politics but in broadcasting as well. In late-December, Clark was on the radio station 98.9 JetFM, coincidentally with former Mountain FM morning show host Justin “Drex” Wilcomes, and was asked by a listener, through Wilcomes, whether she considered herself a MILF or a cougar, sexual terms relating to an attractive, mature woman or women who prefer younger men. Clark showed poor taste by answering the question (shockingly MILF) and but what was more shocking was that Wilcomes was fired and many suggest that it is due to the situation with the premier. Strangely enough, when billionaire and Virgin Group CEO Sir Richard Branson suggested
z Yu Speak
KARL YU
that Clark should kite surf nude with him last spring, the premier did the right thing and said the remark was disrespectful. She also took a shot at Branson saying, “Somebody said to me as a joke that if that’s his best pick-up line then maybe there’s a reason he called his company Virgin.” A look at 98.9 JetFM’s website shows that it is similar to Mountain FM and in fact, both stations are part of Vista Radio – they both play rock music and while there is news, it is not an all-news station. Rock and music stations tend to be less serious, in terms of topics
of conversation amongst on-air personalities, as opposed to an all talk or news radio format. Based on that, it shouldn’t be surprising that a question like that comes up on a station like that. What should be shocking is that the premier answered and Wilcomes was dismissed after. The station won’t comment on the firing but said it was an “internal decision” but if it is based on the now famous incident, it isn’t a dismissible offence. The station won’t comment and not being a listener of the station, there’s no way to know if Wilcomes was walking on thin ice with management. The question alone shouldn’t be enough for him to get his walking papers and again, it’s not a serious, news talk radio station, so a question like that shouldn’t be unexpected. If anyone should be reprimanded, it should be Clark for exercising poor judgment.

More paved trail discussion and debate Editor: Re: Not for paving the trail (letter, Dec. 27 issue of the Gazette) I am responding to Mr. Snidal’s letter published in the Dec. 26 edition. I would like to commend him for writing, as public dialogue is a fundamental feature of the Canadian democracy. I do take issue with some of his assertions, however. Regarding the “shock to the bones” running on pavement: it may be easier on the bones to
run on a soft surface, but it is more tiring – imagine running on wet beach sand. This is why almost all publicly sponsored runs, such as Bloomsday in Spokane, are run on pavement. The hordes of walkers, runners, cyclists and wheelchairbound on the recently paved trail from Highway 3 across the black train bridge also suggest this as well. Regarding horses on the trail: this right-of-way is 30 metres wide (100 feet); the pavement would only be three metres (10 feet) wide. There would be ample room for horses, on and off the paved surface. Regarding mountain bikers: Grand Forks Mountain Bike Club has developed a wide range of trails, but not all bikers want the “extreme sport” experience. Most of us want a comfortable riding surface – the use
z OPINION of the black train bridge trail again suggests this. Yes, it will be expensive. The total cost may be in excess of $1.7 million, which will be raised from private and public funds. These are “targeted” funds that can only be spent on projects that meet specific goals. Governments use grants to promote specific behaviours – in this case, to encourage our aging population to be more active. These monies will be spent: the only question is where. The vision of the paving project is to create a destination for locals and tourists alike; a highly visible asset for the community. Buying local means a change in attitude
The phrase “buy local” has become the mantra of merchants in border towns across Canada or small towns within close driving distance of larger communities. Merchants are legitimately concerned that their businesses are not ROY RONAGHAN being supported. Giving meaning to the “buy local” concept is a challenge because of the many issues that surround it. What constitutes local? Why should one shop at a local outlet for a particular product when the product is available in a store outside the community or online at a lower price? Residents are admonished for not buying local because they are giving local dollars to someone who does not pay taxes or employ people living within the region. Keith Powell, publisher of Kootenay Business, talks about the hometown advantage in an article in the November/December issue of the magazine. Powell asks what is “local?” He then provides examples to show that the concept of shop-local is rather complex, given the factors that influence commerce in the 21st century. “Is the big box store, which employs dozens of people and pays municipal taxes, local? Is the fast food franchise on the corner, one of thousands nation-wide, a local business? Is the municipal government local when it opts to buy through a province-wide purchasing group? As you can see, local is a tough concept to grasp, depending upon your point of view,” he opines. None of Powell’s examples fit the definition of local, being “an independent locally owned outlet.” What does buy local mean to residents of Christina Lake, Grand Forks, Greenwood, Midway or Rock Creek, the communities where merchants depend upon the support of a relatively small regional population? Are there commercial outlets in the city of Grand Forks, where most of the money made by owner-operators stays and circulates in the region? That is not the case in the large grocery stores. People who purchase products from any of these stores are shopping in a locally operated establishment but the money they pay for the products they buy, goes to corporate head office after local operating costs are paid. Only a small portion of the income of these establishments stays in Grand Forks in the pockets of employees and the coffers of city hall. There are several examples of commercial outlets, where the money made by way of profits may circulate within the community. Coffee beans that are roasted in a local facility are a locally prepared product made from an imported raw material. When the beans are bagged and sold after roasting, the money paid by local users does not go to a head office far away. Money spent at a local tool rental business circulates within the community, as does money paid to locally owned and independently operated automobile garages. Hairdressers, barbers, acupuncturists, masseuses and chiropractors are independent operators. Whether these independent operators spend most of their incomes in the region depends on how strongly they feel about supporting the local economy. Do they buy from other locally owned independent businesses or does their money leave the region to fatten the bank accounts of someone far away? The literature on “buy local” contains information on what is called the 10 per cent shift, an initiative with the aim of strengthening local economies by convincing individuals, businesses and organizations to shift 10 per cent of their spending from non-local businesses to local independents, the private, locally owned businesses that serve their needs. A 10 per cent shift would make a significant difference to the local economy but first we must agree on what constitutes “a private, locally owned independent business.” – Roy Ronaghan is a columnist for the Grand Forks Gazette

Skating, samosas and smartphones: celebrating informal learning

COLUMBIA BASIN ALLIANCE FOR LITERACY
Ice skating is hard. There’s a trick or two to configuring your smartphone for downloading library eBooks. And samosas are best with just the right amount of spice: not too little and not too much. How do we know? We may have discovered it for ourselves (darn, that ice is slippery!), perhaps attended a workshop, or consulted a cookbook or two. We learned it, but outside of formal school. And this month that kind of loose, often unrecognized learning – called informal and non-formal learning – is something public libraries and literacy organizations in the province are highlighting as part of the week leading up to ABC Life Literacy Canada’s Family Literacy Day, Jan. 27. “This is the kind of learning that literacy programs and public libraries support every day,” says Brenda Le Clair, chief executive officer of Decoda Literacy Solutions, which leads a literacy network that reaches 400 communities in B.C. “It might be often taken for granted but this informal and non-formal learning – from parents reading to their children, to seniors attending social media workshops – is a vital contributor to on-

Q.
Why should I buy travel insurance when traveling within Canada?
Many people know why they should purchase travel insurance before travelling outside the country, but few people think to purchase it before traveling within Canada to another province. Provincial Medical Insurance Plans may not fully cover you when you are travelling out-of-province or out of country. Costs of medical care vary from province to province and the limits set up on a BC medical plan will not change to accommodate other province’s costs. For example if you are a B.C. resident visiting Ontario and you are admitted to the hospital, you may be required to pay any differences in what is covered. If the BC MSP’s limit for inpatient admission is $75 per day but Ontario’s cost for inpatient admission is $200 per day, you will be responsible for the additional $125 per day. This is where additional travel insurance coverage would come into play. Another example is Emergency Room fees. BC does not charge for emergency room visits so therefore does not pay anything towards emergency room fees. However, other provinces may charge hefty fees just to visit the ER. These costs along with many others that are over and above a provincial plan, such as ambulance services, additional medications, flying a family member to you if necessary and paying for accommodation and meal costs, could be covered if additional travel insurance is purchased. This Travel Within Canada insurance can cost as little as a dollar a day. For more information about travel insurance or to purchase exclusive Travel Insurance coverage please contact RHC Insurance Brokers at any of our 8 offices.

Idle No More gains momentum
SHARA J. COOPER
For the Grand Forks Gazette
The Idle No More movement is growing across the nation and Grand Forks residents are making their voices heard. Over 30 participants took part in a march last Saturday at Gyro Park. Patrick Stephenson, one of the organizers, led a smudging ceremony before everyone held hands for prayer. He said some Aboriginal people are struggling to survive on isolated reserves and are treated like dogs. Stephenson has travelled to Northern Ontario and saw how some Aboriginal communities lived without toilets or running water. He noted that the Aboriginal people aren’t able to find work because they live in such isolated areas. “There is no work and it’s not because we are lazy. There is no work. They stuck as at the end of every road. They want us to die,” Stephenson said. It’s getting harder and harder for First Nations people to live on their reserves as many of them are growing smaller and there is less wildlife for food. “To hunt a deer you have to travel 600 kilometres north,” said Stephenson of a Northern Alberta community. B.C. Southern Interior MP Alex Atamanenko also took part in the protest. “It’s a very frustrating situation for me and my colleagues,” said Atamanenko. “We can only do so much because we are up against this majority, this corporate driven agenda. It’s time now. There is a movement growing and those of us who are fighting with you in parliament need your support.” Atamanenko reinforced the message that everyone must work together to make a difference and that standing in solidarity with the First Nations is integral because other methods don’t work. Chief Theresa Spence was also mentioned when Stephenson thanked her for her work in the movement. Spence is the chief of the Attawapiskat First Nation in Northern Ontario and has been on a liquid diet since Dec. 11. Spence has recently been under controversy because the results of an audit were leaked to the public. The audit showed how money was spent on the reserve. However, Stephenson defended Spence by recognizing she is limited in how she can use the money. “If you want to get your infrastructure to

work, sometimes you (have to) take from Peter to pay Paul and they call that corruption. I’ve seen her house. It ain’t no castle, believe me,” said Stephenson, who was happy with how the protest went on Saturday. He feels the protest is relevant to Grand Forks and that it speaks to many locals who are struggling in a capitalist society. “Look at our economic situation,” he said. “Our wages are less. Jobs are harder to find. The problems and issues of the past 50 years are still there. Everyone needs to be encouraged to stand up and be counted.” This isn’t the last of the local Idle No More campaign. A teach-in will be held at the Anglican Church at noon, this Saturday. Stephenson encourages everyone to bring a friend to help spread the word. “We are going to gather for information so we can be more informed,” said Stephenson.

Learning outside the classroom
Hi Grand Folks! This January, B.C. is celebrating Informal Learning month. Informal learning is exactly what it sounds like, learning that happens outside of a classroom. It’s going for a nature walk with your biologist uncle, or helping your grandma make borscht. Public libraries are centres of informal learning. The collection itself is one place to start. You can find a book on making jewelry and then go home and give it a shot. But there are programs too, lectures and workshops and classes; on any given day you can learn to play chess, sharpen your writing skills, get help using that laptop your grandson gave you, or dig into the roots of your family tree. You can also drop by and join ... The Adult Knitting Club It’ll be starting up in February. Let us know if you’re interested in being a part of it. Materials will be supplied (wool

and needles) but feel free to bring your own if you’d like. All levels welcome, and there will be instructors for those who need a helping hand. The Great Magazine Giveaway We’re cleaning up our magazines and are looking to clear out most of our 2011 issues – come by the library if you’d like to pick up a stack of Fine Homebuilding or Gardens West or any others (by donation)! Anger Management in Youth Come to the library on Jan. 30 at noon

The Grand Forks Midget Bruins fell short of winning the Bruins Cup Challenge Tournament this past weekend, losing to the Vernon Hawks 6-4 in the championship. The local midget team did have a strong showing at Grand Forks Arena, defeating the Kelowna Blackhawks 9-2 on Friday and winning over the Kimberly Dynamiters 5-3 and 9-1 on Saturday but failed to beat the Vernon Hawks in round robin (a 4-2 loss on Saturday) or title game play. “Vernon’s a well coached team,” Grand Forks Midget Bruins’ head coach Allan Jmayoff said. “We got into penalty trouble that’s what caused our demise (in the championship). We took some bad penalties but overall, the discipline of the players has gotten better. From
Kyle Odland
previous games we had probably had twice as many penalties. We talked a lot about staying out of the box and we’re working a lot on that and that’s where we have to improve as a team.” Despite losing in the final however, Jmayoff thought his team played well
overall in its home tournament. “The players played well. They executed well; we changed the lines up a little bit and I think it’s working for us,” Jmayoff said. “The team’s pretty strong, we’ve got more wins than losses this year.” In particular, Jmayoff lauded centre Troy Frith for his play during the midget Bruins’ home tournament. “I mixed the lines this weekend and I think (Frith) just stood out on the line he moved to,” said the coach. For midget Bruins’ team captain Kyle Odland, the team has been progressing as the season goes on. “I think we did really well this weekend considering where we were at, at the beginning of the year and we got second place against a hard team and we could’ve beat them and we got into penalty trouble near the end but otherwise it was pretty good,” Odland said.

After losing the previous two games of its home tournament, the Grand Forks Secondary School junior girls’ basketball team finished strong with a 27-18 win over Southern Okanagan Secondary School last weekend.
The win was preceded by a 54-8 loss to Vernon’s Fulton Secondary School and a 67-14 loss to J.L.. Crowe from Trail. “We were a little scrambly at the beginning but we came together for our last game,” said junior coach Deniece Kirkwood. “We were a little bit discouraged with the games before but I think this really brought us together. We
played two really strong teams from the Kootenays (Fulton and J.L. Crowe); we haven’t been together very long.” Player Vanessa Pavan was also happy that the girls came together. “It was really good, it was a good team spirit, building kind of thing and I was happy we won a good game,” she went on to say.

Curbing childhood obesity The Canadian guideline suggests that children and youth should be getting at least 90 minutes of physical activity per day. Stats are showing that is not the case for many of our children. The amount of time children and youth are spending being inactive is on the rise. Decreased physical activity is leading to a Canada-wide increase in childhood obesity. Children and youth are developing chronic diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease at an early age. They are more likely to take part in high risk behaviors like smoking and alcohol consumption and do poor in school. Grand Forks Recreation (GFREC) is offering a passport for all children who were born in 2003. They will receive free admission to public swimming sessions and public skating sessions for the entire year. GFSS co-ed team has fun against the Harlem Crowns in fundraising game
KARL YU

Despite being competitive against the opposition, players of the Grand Forks Secondary School (GFSS) co-ed Wolves that played the Harlem Crowns last Thursday were looking to have some fun. The final was 67-61 in favour of the Crowns. and the exhibition game served as a fundraiser for GFSS’ graduating class with the Crowns entertaining the crowd with slam dunks, improv comic antics, and as a result, players didn’t take the game too seriously either. “It’s fun, it’s relaxing and we were here just to have a good time,” explained GFSS player Damien Rougeau. “It’s a chance to have fun and learn because you see a lot of moves that the guys do and you want to do them too. them execute them perfectly.” Nevertheless, despite the relaxed nature of the game, Rougeau did try a dunk of his own during the game, as he said he was trying to show the Crowns some of his own moves. “I was trying to match them,” Rougeau said with a laugh. Point guard Alexis Vatcher admitted to being intimidated by the Harlem Crowns, but like Rougeau had a good time, even chipping in with a couple of baskets. “You definitely feel (the Crowns’ players) stepping back, you know they’re going to let you score,” Vatcher explained. “When you make a shot in a game like this, you’re feeling pretty cool.” The event was well attended and according to organizers, the game raised over $1,000. Establishing healthy sleep habits for children is important for good physical and emotional health. By adopting a healthy sleep routine, parents may see dramatic and positive changes in their child’s behaviour.
Things you can do to help your child sleep better at night: • Get physical; children who engage in regular physical activity will fall asleep more quickly than sedentary children. • Do relaxation exercises; meditation or deep breathing can help children learn to relax before bedtime, setting the stage for a more restful sleep. • Massage is beneficial; giving a simple back rub can often relax children to the point where they easily fall asleep. • Read bedtime stories; by adopting this into the nightly ritual, children may see them as closure to the day’s end.
While this year’s Grand Forks Border Bruins hockey squad is comprised largely of rookies, there is a member with over 30 years experience. Keith Kyle won’t score any winning goals or make any crucial saves but, along with Charlie Kane, is one of the team’s equipment managers and helps with game-day duties. “I help out, I make all the (pre-game) speeches for all the boys and I help out Charlie with all the jerseys and everything,” explains Kyle. “In case a player breaks a stick, I ask what number is the player with the (broken) hockey stick.” In terms of pep talks, Kyle says he tells the Border Bruins that they need to win to make the playoffs. “He’s a mainstay,” says team head coach and GM Nick Deschenes. “I think on a lot of teams, especially at the junior

level, you have someone like Keith who’s been involved with the team for a long time and he is such a good-hearted individual. Win or lose, he’s there for you. He shows up every day to work and it’s nice to have someone that cares about the team and the players so much.” Deschenes said the players enjoy his speeches and interacting with him.

While Kyle has been referred to as Beef in the past, he says it’s no longer a nickname that he goes by. “Beef was a nickname I had in high school and this year, everyone calls me Keith. Everyone called me Beef last year but I said, ‘No more of this Beef thing,’” says Kyle. “I help out with the (team) volunteering and I’ll be back again next year,” he says.

Vera Anderson Anderson, Baba’s (Vera) passed away in the Grand Forks Hospital on Thursday, January 10, 2013. Vera was born June 20, 1938, rural side of Canora, Sask., and came to B.C. in 1957 making Grand Forks her new home. She is predeceased by her husband George, her son Rick, two brothers Mike and Peter Shotenski and her parents Nick and Mary Shotenski. She is lovingly survived by her son Dan (Jenn), Kiandra, Mitchell, and Bryar of Elkford, B.C., her son Jack (Lisa), Colin and Devin of Grand Forks, B.C. and her two sisters Pauline (Thoradore, Sask.) and Ann (Andrew, Alberta). Baba’s enjoyed anything with the family especially watching the grandsons play sports, camping and collecting firewood for the winter, Baba enjoyed having coffee with the ladies at A&W. A funeral service took place at Grand Forks Funeral Home on Monday January 14 at 11:00 a.m. and the burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery, Grand Forks, B.C. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Deborah Baker of Grand Forks Funeral Home.
Joan McPhail Joan McPhail (nee: Hall) entered the world on February 23, 1929 at Mrs. McCree’s Nursing Home in Nanaimo, B.C. She passed away suddenly on December 26, 2012 at the age of 83. She was the only child of Tommy Hall and Isabelle (Hindmarch) Hall. She was predeceased by her first husband Stewart McIlroy (Cst. RCMP) in 1956 and by her parents in later years. Joan grew up on Vancouver Island amongst the Hall and Hindmarch clans. She married Stewart in 1948 and they resided at the RCMP detachment at Shawnigan Lake and then Abbotsford which, sadly, was his last post. With two young daughters to support, Joan moved to Vernon to be near her parents, residing there until 1967. During this time, she was employed as a civilian member of the RCMP (Vernon Det.) and then the Workers’ Compensation Board. In the mid 1960s, she began her career with Avon Products of Canada Ltd., encouraging and inspiring women throughout southeastern B.C. during her 25-year tenure. In 1970, Joan married Gordon McPhail and they resided in Nelson at Willow Point until 2005 when they moved to Grand Forks. Joan and Gordon enjoyed 42 years of marriage, music, fun and laughter. Her time in Nelson was spent on Kootenay Lake, either sunbathing or boating, fishing, golfing, gardening, renovating, sewing, knitting, crafting of all sorts, playing bridge, and having fun with family and friends. She loved Palm Springs, spending many winters there, and enjoyed trips across Canada and abroad. Since moving to Grand Forks in 2005, she endured two unsuccessful knee operations, and, though her mobility was impaired and painful, she faced each day with her winning smile and optimism. Through church attendance, several bridge clubs, exercise and water fitness, Sam’s Club and card making classes she lived life to the fullest and, due to her youthful spirit, made many new friends of all ages in Grand Forks. Joan was the centre of life for her family and was well loved by all who knew her. In every heart she touched, in every life she changed and in every thought she inspired, she lives on. Joan is lovingly survived by her husband Gordon McPhail, daughters Susan Martin (Rick) and Margot Brock (Ron), stepson Shane McPhail (Cheryl), 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren which includes extended family members. A family graveside service was held on January 4, 2013 at the Evergreen Cemetery in Grand Forks followed by a Celebration of Life at St. John’s United Church.

A good man leaves an inheritance
My parents left us more than just money z View From The Pulpit RICK STEINGARD
This last week, I signed the final paperwork for my dad’s estate. He passed away two and a half years ago but having a self-employed business and a house fire made the final settlement slow. There is some money but not a lot when divided among eight children. We as a family have been fortunate. Many a family feud has erupted over who gets what from an estate. There has been no bickering, nor fighting. I am very thankful that two of my brothers agreed to the big job of being executors. Yet in the midst of losing dad, and then dividing up the estate, a scripture comes to mind. “A good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children,” Proverbs 13:22. While it is good to enjoy the fruit of your own labour, it is also good to store some of that fruit for future generations. Many people have been blessed by self-sacrificing parents, myself included. There is more left as a legacy than just money and stuff. A wise parent will pass on some of their skills and passions without imposing them. Out of eight children, six of us have followed different careers that dad enjoyed: three are pastors, two are photographers and one is involved with sales. The other two are involved in office work, which was my mother’s strength. Music was also a passion of dad. He played the church organ, accordion, trumpet and the saw. He then

could pick up many other instruments and play them by ear. He could even get the strange theremin to work. My family has picked up on this passion and most of us play musical instruments. Some of us lead worship in churches, although we use guitars and keyboards. Many of the grandchildren also love and play musical instruments. The biggest legacy from both my mom and dad has been a desire to pursue a deeper relationship with God. Both loved God and brought us kids up to love God too. They not only taught us, they demonstrated it by living a vibrant Christian life. They were not perfect, but even those times had learning potential. “Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it,” Proverbs 22:6. Dad had a soft and compassionate heart. He was quiet about it but would give the shirt off his back if you needed it. He loved giving hitchhikers a ride. One time he picked up a hitchhiker from France who was spending the summer travelling Canada. Dad brought him home and Gilles stayed with us a week. It was a great cross-cultural experience for us and I still have a desire to visit France. Dad taught us to be generous by doing it. He really did follow the golden rule to “do to others what you would have them do to you,” Matthew 7:12. Both Mom and Dad gave us a hand up in many areas of life. Money and stuff are nice to inherit but the true riches they have given us are those skills and good character traits that they taught and modeled for us many years ago. Thanks Mom! Thanks Dad! – Rick Steingard is pastor at King of Kings Church in Midway

tu l a a r t i g o n n o s ! C On behalf of the City of Grand Forks, Grand Forks Credit Union, Boundary Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the Grand Forks Gazette, all the participating merchants and our community, we thank you for shopping locally and making this years $2013 in 2013 a resounding success! There were 28 Semi-finalists. The Grand Prize Draw was held on Jan. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the Grand Forks Credit Union. This year’s winner is Virginia Peters. Congratulations Virginia from the sponsors and all the participating merchants. Shopping locally helps stimulate our community and benefits everyone! Virginia Peters smiles happily after her name was the last one left in the draw bucket. We will take Virginia shopping next week where she will spend her $2,013 in 2,013 seconds at participating businesses.
Contestants eagerly await the draw.
Angela Soukoreff (Grand Forks Credit Union), right, emcees while Chris Hammett (Grand Forks Gazette) waits for the next semi-finalist to draw another name out of the bucket. As each contestants name is drawn, they would select the next name for elimination.
Suspense mounts as we get down to the last four finalists.
