By Jennifer Lang There was plenty of laughter, a few tears and countless good memories shared as friends, family and long-time customers crowded into Dann’s Electronics Saturday for Allan Dann’s retirement party. The 88-year-old is calling it quits. He’s sold the building and is closing the long-running service and sales operation, which started out as his father, Ernest’s, bicycle repair shop in 1921. Right to the end, Dann’s Electronics at 5657 176 Street has been an essential component of Cloverdale life, providing families with their first home appliances and TVs, along with an unmatched

level of customer service, earning a special spot in people’s hearts. Friend Alan Clegg said his family’s experience was typical. When he and his wife bought their first home in 1970, they shopped around for a refrigerator and stove before heading to Dann’s. “When we told Allan we’d like to buy from you, but we can get it cheaper somewhere else, he said, ‘I’ll split the difference with you.’” Dann delivered the merchandise, too, on a weekend. “So, that’s the kind of guy he was.” He also recalled Allan Dann making house calls to Clegg’s elderly father. “Allan would drive up, they’d have a

chat. Allan would fix his TV. That’s old school.” “Just the kind of customer service he would give was wonderful,” added Lorna Clegg, who was part of the procession of well-wishers streaming into the normally spacious showroom Jan. 12. Dann’s decades in Cloverdale as Surrey’s longest-serving businessman, and the fact that he grew up here (his family lived in the apartment above the shop until the 1950s), have made him an “information post” on local history, Alan Clegg said. “He was also one of the nicest guys

BIA: board ‘did its research’ From page one

The two Cloverdale business groups were initially opposed, Orazietti said, fearing negative impacts on Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino, and, by extension, the Cloverdale economy. But after meeting with B.C. Lottery Corp. and provincial government officials, the organizations said they were satisfied that Gateway’s plans will not be a detriment to Fraser Downs or the horse racing industry. “My board has spent a great amount of time researching the subject because of the fear it would cannibalize the existing operation,” Orazietti said. “The business community of Cloverdale believes we can survive with this operation.” Orazietti told Surrey city councillors he was also there to assuage fears that a new casino will

Twins Grace and Noah were born in 2008.

To the editor; As a 26-year-old Cloverdale mother of twins who were born prematurely, I wholeheartedly support a new campaign launched by the Infertility Awareness Association of Canada, calling on the Province of British Columbia to publicly fund single embryo transfer in vitro fertilization (IVF). My twins were born from IVF. But like so many other B.C. families struggling financially, we transferred more than one embryo to increase our chances of making the costly procedure successful. The result was premature delivery and related health complications. Public funding for single embryo transfer IVF – a policy adopted by the Province of Quebec in 2010 – would lead to better health outcomes for both mothers and babies, and would save our province money by reducing multiple births. Healthier mothers, healthier babies and reduced health care costs. It’s a policy that would benefit everyone, and provide equal opportunity for B.C. families struggling with infertility. Another fiscal cliff

To the editor; Re: “Falling over the ‘Fiscal Cliff ’,” Jan. 10 A person close to me, “Daniel,” has been exceedingly busting his hump while laboring very hard in B.C.’s forestry sector – every kind of work, except “killing the trees” – in order to stay off of the public dole; nonetheless, no matter how hard he, and many others who feel they were born to do forestry work, attempts to find such paying work, there are always random and varying periods of EI-dependence for him. However, our federal government has made it clear that it’s not going to accept as good enough Daniel’s unrelenting efforts at finding paying forestry work, regardless of the fact that B.C.’s Liberal government has – by its notoriously pathetic (non-)maintenance of B.C.’s forests – even broken provincial laws stating that it must adequately maintain a healthy forestry sector. Sure, the government finds no problem when it comes to raping large swaths of trees for countless square kilometers, but everything else has gone to hell, including what once was reliable forestry work. Now Daniel is relying on a forestry profession that, according to a survey of west coast (including California) celebrities, is at the very bottom of the list of back-breaking jobs that the survey participants would be willing to perform – i.e. tree planting; and a gradually-graying Daniel is almost 50 years of hardword-history age. No repeat for Langley Reminiscent of one year ago, the George Heagy team of Chilliwack played Ernie Wah’s foursome from Langley in the championship game of the Senior Men’s Bonspiel at Cloverdale Curling Club on Jan. 9. This year the result was reversed and the Heagy team edged out Wah to emerge victorious in this annual threeday-event. It was an excellent final game in a bonspiel that included teams from the North Shore, Richmond, Tunnel Town, Coquitlam, Langley, Peace Arch and Clovedale Curling Clubs. Much fun was had by all. The winning team (pictured at right, L-R) is Bob Pisatcky, Wayne McAlpine, Larry Keller and George Heagy.

Four slain in spate of gun violence

At about 7 p.m. Sunday, a man was shot near 168 Street and 76 Avenue. He was transported to hospital where he died at 11:30 p.m. Police now say that shooting was targeted and gang-related. “This shooting is a targeted shooting on the victim who was known to police. He has been identified as 27-year-old Surrey resident, Manjot Dhillon,” said Pound. They say it’s too early to say whether that killing and last Tuesday’s shooting or related. Two men were found shot to death at around 11:30 p.m. Jan. 13 at a parkade at an apartment near 128 Street and 94 Avenue.

After a weekend spate of gun violence that left three men dead in Surrey, there was a fourth shooting early Tuesday morning in the area of 127 Street and 112B Avenue. A male who appeared to be suffering from gunshot wounds was pronounced deceased at the scene. “IHIT (Integrated Homicide Investigation Unit) can confirm that this most recent Surrey shooting was a targeted, gang-related homicide,” said IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Jennifer Pound. Tuesday’s shooting comes after a three men were shot dead over the weekend in two separate shootings.

Contributed The 2013 version of the BC Scott Tournament of Hearts Ladies Curling Championships started with a bang on Monday at the Cloverdale Curling Club. After a great opening banquet Sunday night at the club, the best teams in B.C. started play Monday morning. Defending and threetime B.C. champion Kelly Scott’s team from Kelowna opened the first draw with a win over Vernon’s Roberta Kuhn and then topped off the day with a win over Royal City’s Marilou Richter in the night draw. Play continued all week with daily draws through to Thursday with tiebreakers and the first playoff this Friday night. Semi-finals go Saturday at 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., with the evening game televised live on Shaw 4. The final championship game, also slated for Shaw, goes at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

The opening ceremonies featured all 10 teams, their coaches and officials from Curl BC as well as the Host Committee and numerous club volunteers. Club member and past chairperson of the 2011 Scotties, Sherry Russel, served as emcee. She welcomed speakers Terry Vandale of Curl BC, Merlin Wick the President of the Cloverdale Club and Amanda Welton, this year’s chairperson of the event. Amanda also threw the ceremonial first rock, which was swept perfectly onto the button by one senior club member and a wee little curler from the Club’s Little Rock program. Congratulations to the Club for hosting one of BC curling’s biggest events. Come on down and watch world class curling right here in our own backyard. Tickets are $5 at the door or $40 for an event pass and available at the Club.

Bill Reid offered a special thank you on behalf of the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce and the Cloverdale BIA. “You’ve probably been the most reliable member we’ve had in the Chamber of Commerce since I was involved,” Reid said. “We’re going to miss you very much.” Then Allan (wearing a name tag that helpfully included the word, ‘self ’ should anyone not recognize him) offered a few remarks, allowing that it’s been a trying time for him but that the presence of so many family members meant a lot. Their four children, grandsons Ben (who works at NASA and lives in Texas) and Dennis (a university student in Victoria), and countless other family members and friends were there, sharing stories, admiring the building and occasionally lending a hand with a customer as VCRs and bike repair jobs continued to roll in the door. “People just came and we appreciate that, Brenda and I,” he said, beckoning to his wife of 62 years. “If it wasn’t for this lady beside me here, I don’t think I’d be here. We’ve had our moments, up and down,” he said. “All through life, you have your ups and downs, but in the end, pretty good. Really good. Especially in a town like Cloverdale.”

Everybody knows each other. The families used to get together. There wasn’t any TV. You’d actually get together. It was a community, there were dances.” Ina Vandeburgt remembered coming in for spare vacuum parts or to get her kids’ bikes fixed. “Time just seems to pass too quickly,” she said, looking around the high-ceilingedshowroom, still populated with vintage TV and stereo equipment, and even an old-model sweeper like one she

From mouldy oldies to golden gals What do you get when you cross two old biddies with one charming scoundrel in Vegas? The results might surprise you. When two elderly widows – cooped up in a retirement condo – cross paths with an unlikely interloper, the results rock both their worlds, helping them undergo a grand metamorphosis to glammed-up golden girls in the Surrey Little Theatre’s winter production, Bermuda Avenue Triangle. Directed by Rita Price, the cast of performers includes Kate Major, Dr. Laurie Kortschak, Terry Ford, Lisa Beaulieu, Peter Cowhig and Michael Powell. The play, a comedy by Renee Taylor and Joseph Bologna, opens Jan. 24 and runs to Feb. 16 at the Surrey Little Theatre at 7027 184 Street. Tickets are $15. Reservations by calling 604-576-8451 or email reservations@surreylittletheatre.com, or visit www.surreylittletheatre.com.

Q

Help!!! i don’t feel comfortable explaining my automotive problems?

A

A common problem for both men and women in regards to automotive concerns is that we are not familiar with some basic terms. If you are uncertain what to look for or how to describe a problem think about your senses – look, listen, feel and smell. • a physical problem or sensation – run on, hesitation, surging • a mechanical issue or unusual sounds – grinding, squeaking, metallic noises • visual clues – drips or pools of fluids • visual signs – warning lights or warning indicators on in the dash • Frequency, location & change – how often does the issue occur, where does a noise originate, has there been changes in things like fuel or oil consumption, changes in overall handling. Communicating to the best of your ability will help a technician do his or her work to the best of their abilities and follow the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual to help keep problems from developing.

Trish & Kevin

Detach yourself emotionally from your home and start viewing it as a commodity you want to sell. This is difficult for most sellers whose identities are often reflected in their homes. However, it’s important to be completely candid with yourself about how your home should look when it goes on the market. Today’s home buyers are usually savvy, choosy and short of time. They’ll pay a premium for homes they can move right into. The probable selling price for your home will depend on various factors, including: how many buyers are looking for homes like yours, how many other homes like yours are currently on the market, and the condition of your home relative to your competition.

Q

Do dentures last forever?

A

While it’s true that dentures are durable, they aren’t any more permanent than eyeglasses or shoes! Just as the condition of your eyes change, so does the condition of your mouth. Like the soles of our shoes that wear down due to friction, so do the teeth on our dentures! When your dentures become worn and ill fitting, your chewing becomes impaired and your ability to laugh and smile confidently disappears.

at “The Lunders Real Estate Team”

Generally, dentures should be relined every 2 years and replacing them at regular intervals of 5 to 7 years makes it possible to maintain a healthy natural smile and prevent intraoral deterioration. Call us today for your complimentary consultation.
