Rossland cares about its schools, especially where K-12 is concerned. Residents brought up the idea of innovation and ways to look at increasing the amount in the district, hoping to find a way to perhaps keep both

schools open. Superintendent Greg Luterbach painted a dire picture of the school board’s budget. According to Luterbach’s figures, Option 1 would save SD20 $145,000, Option 2 would save $285,000 and Option 3 saves $455,000. The public had some other suggestions for options, such as selling or leasing MacLean to L’école des Sept-sommets, who’s expressed serious interest and making RSS 4-12. SD20 could then work with the francophone school to house K-3

in that school. There were well over 500 residents in attendance at the meeting. The forum focused on table discussion, where each table discussed their top points for and against each option. Then 15 of the groups were chosen to share their views aloud, while the rest submitted their ideas in writing. There was also a question/ comment period at the end. Some of the points that were made highlighted the crowding that would result in all

One suggestion was that the school district drop Rossland all together, and the city create a municipal school board. At one point in the forum, a resident asked that anyone who would consider dropping out of the district altogether if K-12 is lost stand up. This lead to about a third of the room See City on P. 3

-standing. This played on the notion that SD20 hasn’t taken into account the loss of student enrolment. Each student brings in $9,100 to the district and so a loss of any students to home schooling or registration through SD8 could easily add up. Board chair Darrel Ganzert said the district would discuss what the potential losses are if Rossland students are withdrawn, though it hadn’t yet entered into their discussions. Others were concerned that the district only talked about cutting spending and not increasing revenue. Kathy Wallace said that, as both a representative on city council and the regional district, she understands the constraints that the school district is under, but said it’s a chance for the district to step up. She said that her belief is that quality of education is about providing choice for all the students in the district, something that RSS does. “What I’ve heard since I got here is a focus on numbers, a focus on meeting the budget, and I appreciate that, but this

discussion has been ongoing in this community for far too long and it needs to come to an end,” Wallace said. “I think it’s time for the board to act as visionaries and be proactive and address this beyond just trying to meet an unrealistic budget. I think it’s time for the school board to talk to the Ministry of Education. “ Wallace said that the RSS building, in itself, provides amenities that would never be built again if the school is condemned. “That auditorium will never be built again, we know that by today’s building standards, you’re not going to recreate that,” she said. Wallace noted that there is an opportunity to partner with the Francophone school and also the City of Rossland. During Monday’s meeting, Rossland council voted unanimously for city staff to open talks with SD20 on alternative ways that the city could fund the schools. “As a city, we are prepared to act proactively, as our Neighbourhood of Learning has, to coming up with some solutions, be it financially, be it whatever may be with regards to the facil-

Ganzert said that in a recent conversation with Rossland mayor Greg Granstrom, he indicated that there was a “very narrow window of opportunity” and that “the school district is more than willing to meet .” “I believe it is one of our high-

est priorities, we will be meeting in the next few days with the city representatives to come up with some sort of understanding of how we could work together. Council also directed staff to ensure “that the structural component of the work performed on the Rossland Curling Arena is inspected.” The mayor explained the process. “Council resolved to do an inspection on the arena upgrades, that inspection is now underway,” Granstrom said. “There will be a report coming to this

council, I expect within two months, at which time council will have to deal with it. “I will say that part of the inspection involved the electrical, and the fact that there was no permit taken out on the electrical. We have a report that we have not seen yet... that says there are problems with the electrical.” He said council and the city are now dealing with those electrical problems.

Schools spotlight

After Tuesday night’s meeting, Rossland is at a crossroads with regards to school configuration. Parents and residents are tired of fighting this familiar and drawn out battle. A solution needs to be found for good. Hopefully, the school district can see past cuts as the only option, as there are other, more innovative solutions skirting the periphery. Times have changed and it’s no longer so unrealistic to expect results for increased enrolment immediately, if the invitation is put out there. Take the international programs, with a bit more funding, is it really unrealistic to have increased enrolment, and therefore increased funding, in the next couple years? Advertising is always the first thing to go when business is down, usually right when you need it most. This is the digital age, an age where information passes very easily from one side of the world to the other. Rossland as a city and destination has been shining in the news lately and this could be a real opportunity to draw attention. The city offers a lot of world class athletic training in our schools and there are many athletes from other countries who are looking for a place just like Rossland. Maybe all it would take is a couple Youtube videos to inspire young athletes from around the world to come and take schooling and training from academy programs at RSS. I’m sure there are a number of students who would love to make that video. There’s a ton of innovative people in Rossland. It’s too bad that the meeting is about which schools to lose, rather than what can be done to build up what we have. Just imagine if all the energy that was put into fighting the reoccuring closures could be put into ways to harness that innovative spirit and do so much more for Rossland and the district. We want to hear from you.

Winter Carnival starts next week Rossland News Editor

The 116th Rossland Winter Carnival is only one week away and it’s looking to be a great event. This year, the carnival runs from Jan. 24-27 Lisa Wegner, an organizer for the carnival, noted that the carnival is still in need of volunteers and that those interested can find out more information online at www.rosslandwintercarnival.com. A table for volunteer recruitment will also be set up at Ferraro Foods on Saturday Jan. 19, so, she said, there is still lots of time to join the fun! The Get Hyped party is at the Prestige on Tuesday Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. and will be an opportunity for volunteers to receive their buffs and other great items, as well as lots of food and entertainment. “It is the commitment and efforts of this community, the volunteers and our sponsors that has consistently put us on the map in a very positive light,” Wegner noted. She added that the scheduled taping of Canada A.M. on Friday, Jan. 25 is an opportunity to show the world what Rossland means to it’s residents. The carnival website is being kept up to date and has an extensive list of the event times and places. On Thursday, the Nelson and District Variety Show will start

Rossland getting great attention from national/international media

ARne PetRyShen

Rossland News Editor

Rossland’s been on a roll in the national and international spotlight lately, winning Powder Magazine’s Ski Town Throwdown as well as drawing the national eye of Canada AM for the upcoming Rossland Winter Carnival. Rossland can add one more accolade to that list, since it’s been chosen as one of The 46 Places to Go in 2013 by NYTimes.com. Rossland is ranked as number 8 on the list, that features such destinations as Rio de Janeiro, Bhutan and Amsterdam. Tourism Rossland has been involved with the promotion of Rossland and much of it can also be attributed to the Grey Mountain expansion going on at Red Resort. Deanne Stevens, executive director of Tourism Rossland said that they attended the Tourism BC media event at a ski show

9:00 a.m. Sunday Worship and Sunday School

in Seattle. It was there that she talked with ski journalists attending the show, notably Christopher Solomon from the New York Times, who ranked the 46 places to go. “When I told him all the great things that are going on here that just peeked his interest,” Stevens said. “The Grey expansion; it’s a huge, huge area. There’s nothing else like that going on in Canada or even in North America right now. So those kind of stories are really key when they have that something is new or bigger or better.” As for news that Canada AM will be shooting, Stevens said she’s been working with Tourism BC on that for the past month and a half. “They said they want to go ahead,” she said. “So now I just have to put all the planning into action. We did a site survey yesterday and they were blown away with just how cute everything is looking. The town is looking so good with all the pretty new lights

and the banners and the snow. They actually couldn’t believe what we’re going to do with the Rail Jam.” One interesting aspect is that since they live for Eastern Canada, shooting will begin at 2:30 a.m. Friday morning, and finish around 6 a.m. Stevens is confident that Rossland will be up and ready to go at that hour! The Rail Jam will be on, with $500 worth of prizes to be awarded to participants. Additionally there will be a Bobsled “Show and Shine” taking place downtown on Columbia Avenue, between Washington and Queen with $500 worth of prizes for these participants. “We will also be hosting the biggest shopping spree Rossland has ever seen - with over 16 boutique retailers open at this time with a variety of great sales and promotions,” she said. “To top it off there will be door prizes for shoppers of over $4,000 worth of gift certificates.”

Safety is within your power Be ready and safe if the power goes out this winter. All it takes is a little planning and safety know-how: • create an emergency kit with 72 hours’ worth of supplies • store the kit in an easily accessible location • consider other heat sources, such as your gas fireplace (but never barbecues or camp stoves) • stay inside your vehicle until help arrives if it comes into contact with a downed power line For more tips and information, visit fortisbc.com/safety or call 1-888-438-7847. more aware of the avalanche peril,” said Graham Jones, a director of the RSAR. “It give them the opportunity to get comfortable with their equipment and practice with their transceivers.” Jones stressed that it is imperative to do this before venturing into the outdoors, as knowing how to use it could be the difference between being found if you’re buried or saving someone’s life, if they are buried in an avalanche. “We teach people how to build a snow shelter, if they do get caught in the backcountry overnight, we have fun events.

“We have snow shoe races and prizes to give away,” he said “It’s an educational day mainly.” Those interested should dress for the weather and wear warm boots. If access to the chair is required, lift tickets must be purchased. Those who have had previous avalanche training are also welcome. No registration is necessary and Jones said just to show up at 10 a.m., check out the calendar of events and pick what interests you. For more info contact Jones at 362-9966.

Red Mountain resort is currently hosting the North Face Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships. The event began Wednesday, and runs until Saturday, Jan. 19. The championships are always a spectacle of the talented freeskiers from all over North America. The championships are open to three age categories – 7-11, 11-14 and 15-18. The youngest category was added recently and doesn’t require an International Free Skiers Association membership, which the others do. . For more info call 250-362-7384 or go to www. canadianfreeskiing.com/registration.

In the Dec. 13, 2012 Rossland News, the story “Cafe Books West serving up coffee and culture” incorrectly stated that the emphasis of Cafe Books is more on coffee than books, when in fact, it is the opposite. Michele Skuce, from Cafe Books, noted that: “Although we do serve excellent coffee, the focus of our energies and our passion is in the book store end of the business.”

Q

Why should I buy travel insurance when traveling within Canada?

A

Head Housekeeper Red Mountain Resort Lodging is currently seeking applicants for the position of Head Housekeeper. This position is full time year round. The successful applicant will have to be detail oriented, have excellent organization and communication skills, thrive in a fast paced environment, and be able to both lead a team as well as function as a member within the team. Benefits include a season pass to Red Mountain Resort, benefit package, and annual vacation. Wage is negotiable. Please send resume to lodging@redresort.com.

Many people know why they should purchase travel insurance before travelling outside the country, but few people think to purchase it before traveling within Canada to another province. Provincial Medical Insurance Plans may not fully cover you when you are travelling out-of-province or out of country. Costs of medical care vary from province to province and the limits set up on a BC medical plan will not change to accommodate other province’s costs. For example if you are a B.C. resident visiting Ontario and you are admitted to the hospital, you may be required to pay any differences in what is covered. If the BC MSP’s limit for inpatient admission is $75 per day but Ontario’s cost for inpatient admission is $200 per day, you will be responsible for the additional $125 per day. This is where additional travel insurance coverage would come into play. Another example is Emergency Room fees. BC does not charge for emergency room visits so therefore does not pay anything towards emergency room fees. However, other provinces may charge hefty fees just to visit the ER. These costs along with many others that are over and above a provincial plan, such as ambulance services, additional medications, flying a family member to you if necessary and paying for accommodation and meal costs, could be covered if additional travel insurance is purchased. This Travel Within Canada insurance can cost as little as a dollar a day. For more information about travel insurance or to purchase exclusive Travel Insurance coverage please contact RHC Insurance Brokers at any of our 8 offices.

The B.C. government is working on ways to hold onto movie, TV and video game production, as Hollywood shifts work to other provinces and countries that attract them with generous subsidies and tax breaks. But that won’t involve matching generous tax credits offered by Ontario and Quebec, said Bill Bennett, B.C.’s minister of community, sport and cultural development. “I understand why the film and TV and digital media industries are concerned,” Bennett said in an interview Monday. “What the film industry seems to want mainly is for us to match the tax credits that are available in Ontario, and we can’t do that.” Bennett said he is working on a new policy that will “clean up and simplify” the business environment for the industry, which is looking at further costs as B.C. prepares to phase out the harmonized

sales tax in March. Movie industry insiders say most of B.C.’s movie crews are out of work as 2013 begins. One of those is Lee Cleary, assistant director on such B.C.-made movies as The Hurt Locker, Fantastic 4 and the first X-Men movies. “The last project that I worked on in B.C. was in 2009, on The ‘A’ Team,” Cleary said from his home in Vancouver, where he has lived for 10 years. “Since then the blockbuster films have not been coming here.” In 2009, Ontario stepped up its tax credit for film and TV production to 25 per cent of all spending by foreign companies in the province. Since then, Ontario has passed B.C. as the third largest entertainment production centre in North America, after California and New York. B.C. gives the industry a 33-percent refundable tax credit on labour spending only. Quebec has also stepped up its incentives, resulting in 20th Century Fox moving later movies in

the X-Men series to Montreal. Bennett said the B.C. government provided $1.2 million last year to BC Film + Media, a nonprofit society that offers financing, marketing and skills development. Another $947,000 went to the BC Film Commission, a provincial government office that helps producers secure permits, crews and shooting locations around the province. Another $235,000 was provided to regional film commissions last year. Cleary said the rise of computer image techniques reduce the appeal of B.C. scenery to filmmakers. B.C.’s spectacular mountains can be added to a scene “with a brushstroke,” and Hollywood studios are shopping the world for the best deal, he said. B.C. still has a reputation for quality crews, beautiful locations and easy access to Los Angeles, but those things alone aren’t keeping big studio projects coming. Cleary said B.C. residents are still finding work, but leaving the province to get it.

Kytami is a self proclaimed “violinist extremist” who challenges the lines between classical and electronic, ancient and new age, synthetic and organic. fused with the heavy bass elements of Dubstep and Hip Hop, Kytami has managed to soar above not only the constraints of musical genre and labeling, but has forged a path so bold and unique that she is regularly dubbed Canada’s most diverse and engaging fiddle player. Kytami is internationally renowned for one thing: she rocks the fiddle like a woman possessed and the audience dances to match. From Germany to Hong Kong and Joshua Tree Festival to Shambhala, one thing is affirmed at Kytami concerts time and again: If you dare witness this violin diva take the stage, be prepared to wear through not only the soles of your dancing shoes, but perhaps the version of reality you brought to the door. Kytami will perform on Saturday, January 19 at the Rossland Miners’ Hall. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in advance at Out of the Cellar on Columbia Avenue in Rossland. $2 off for RCAC members. Please no minors. For more information on the RCAC winter performance series and Kytami, visit www.rosslandcac.com.
