The reason so many people talk about new beginnings and fresh, positive energy at this time of year is because so many others are talking or thinking about the same thing. They’ve got their eyes focussed on a bright horizon. Here at the crossroads of the Kootnenays there’s a big event on that horizon and it getting bigger. Changes have been made to a trade show which had previously been geared toward home and garden-type entities. It has evolved into to the Kootenay Home and Lifestyles Expo – designed to be even more inclusive – making the upcoming event what should be the biggest and best ever. The Expo is coming up in March but the organizing is already in full swing. Anna Kaytor of the Castlegar and

Provincial Liberals continue to seek Kootenay candidates NELSON STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser
Four months before the provincial election, the BC Liberals have yet to announce candidates in either NelsonCreston or Kootenay West. However, party spokesman Sam Oliphant said last week they are getting closer and disagreed
NDP MLA Katrine Conroy
with a suggestion the governing party is having a hard time finding people.
“No, I wouldn’t say that,” he told the West Kootenay Advertiser. “We’re actually doing quite well. Obviously they’re tough ridings. “They’ll be a challenge, but we’re quite happy with how things are going. We definitely have some people in mind.” The only rumoured candidate to date in Nelson-
Creston is Creston town councillor Wes Graham, who wasn’t immediately available for comment. Oliphant said party policy is not to comment on potential candidates before they have announced. “By the end of the month we’ll be pretty close to having some news,” he said. Incumbent New
Democrats Michelle Mungall and Katrine Conroy have already been renominated in Nelson-Creston and Kootenay West respectively. Sjeng Derx is running for the Green Party in NelsonCreston, although the Greens don’t have anyone lined up in Kootenay West yet. In the 2009 elec-
NDP MLA Michelle Mungall
tion, Josh Smienk ran for the Liberals in Nelson-Creston
and Brenda Binnie was the party’s standard bearer in Kootenay West. The Greens fielded Andy Morel in Kootenay West and Sean Kubara in NelsonCreston. The Communist Party also had a candidate in Kootenay West and the Conservatives ran in Nelson-Creston.

He was a big fan of the band before becoming a member, and its genre of modern rock with a pop edge, is more his style, he said. Deyotte’s bandmates are Jeff Kalesnikoff, vocalist from Castlegar; Dan Ball, bassist from Nelson and Tyson Yerex, a keyboardist and guitarist from Kelowna. “They have worked really hard for the last six or seven years,” said Deyotte. “I’m really lucky to be coming in at this point in their success.”

A festival Deyotte is looking forward to is Canadian Music Week in Toronto at the end of March. It is a 1,000-artist event, set in 60 venues over six nights. “That week is set in stone, and I can hardly wait,” he said. But for now, the band has two months off to rest and recuperate from the grueling months of travel and tours. Instead of taking a break, however, Deyotte headed north

Hoop fans in Grand Forks had the chance to see some circus-like dunks and comedy on Jan. 10 at the Grand Forks Secondary School (GFSS) gym. As part of a fundraiser for this year’s GFSS graduating class, a co-ed team of high school players went up against the Harlem Crowns, a Harlem Globetrotterlike team based out of Oakland, California. Playing a style billed as “Clownball,” it consists of basketball, NBA Jam-like dunks and some improv theatre that involves players, referees and the crowd. “To me, that’s the biggest part of it, the kids, the families,” says Harlem Crowns’ team manager and player Herb Scaife when asked about the interactivity of the team’s games. “Because a lot of the other teams don’t do that. That’s something we can only do in smaller markets. That’s something I definitely look forward to.” Scaife says some of the Crowns’ antics – including locking the referees out of the gym and distracting opposing players during free throw opportunities – are scripted but a lot of improvisation occurs too. “To me, the things that happen on the fly are funnier, it’s timing. We have certain things we want to do but we have different people we play against and different refs every night so the way it comes across is a lot different, it varies,” explains Scaife. The Harlem Crowns began their 2013 tour in Grand Forks, will tour over parts of Canada, the Western U.S. and Mexico and for Scaife, he doesn’t mind areas like small-town B.C. “British Columbia is a very nice province
obviously because of the scenery, but the people here are really nice, they treat you well when they see you,” opines Scaife. “Obviously we’re not from here but we don’t get a lot of nega-

“Procter has always been spelled with an E. If the station doesn’t agree, someone made an error.” Historian Ted Affleck noted: “So much for the integrity of decades of CPR signs and publications.” How did the confusion first come about? Affleck speculated in an unpublished article held by the Touchstones Nelson archives that a CPR construction engineer named A.F. Proctor — “a man with a flair for public relations” — was to blame. Affleck noted that when a spur line was built on the south side of Kootenay Lake from Five Mile Point

Eventually the railway relented and changed the spelling. Yet in 1985 Paul Munch received a letter from the CPR public relations department that read:
to the outlet opposite Balfour, references became more frequent to “the barge slip at Proctor,” and the name began to show up on official CPR timetables. “A.F. Proctor has long passed from the scene,” Affleck wrote, “but perhaps we should afford him some long delayed and grudging recognition for his deft exercise in public relations which seems to have resulted in the name Proctor being applied erroneously for so many years.” We’ll add one more wrinkle: there was also a CPR ticket agent in Nelson named John Eber Proctor.
The Kootenay Boundary region has been hit with a surge in the number of flu cases, according to B.C. Centre for Disease Control. Although, according to Doctor Trevor Corneil, Medical Health Officer for Interior Health, it is too early to say what the
final statistic will look like. “The flu has hit earlier than last year, so the number of cases seem to be high right now,” said Corneil. “But it actually meets the average over a period of the last ten years.” The most common strain of flu that is affecting the Kootenays is H3N2 type A influenza virus.

Roy Has Fire...has talent and ambition Craig Lindsay Castlegar News Reporter
Castlegar band Roy Has Fire has made it into the top 10 of an online B.C. best of the band contest. The alt-rockers were chosen by the judges out of several dozen B.C. bands for the contest based on the submission of a couple of original songs. The band consists of Oliver Bean on guitar, James Villa on guitar and vocals, Derek Monsen on drums and Mateo Villa on bass guitar and vocals. Monsen and Mateo attend Stanley Humphries Secondary, while James goes to Mount Sentinel Secondary. Bean, who also teaches guitar at Supercat Studios, graduated from Mount Sentinel last year. “It’s hosted by Youthink Magazine and it’s called B.C.’s Best Teen Band contest,” said Bean. “We thought it was a perfect contest for us. All the other contests we were too old or too young or there was something that didn’t work. With this one, we gave it a shot and now we’re in the top 10.”

“They hosted tryouts online and around 50-60 bands tried out,” explained Monsen. “We had to send in a video and two recorded songs.” “A panel of professionals picked out the top 10 and we made it,” said James. “Now from online voting - from people in the community, your fans and all that - that’s how they’re deciding the top three. The top three get cash prizes, a recording session and get to play a big concert in Vancouver.” To help out these young rockers, go to http://www.youthink.
ca/band-contest-2013 and vote away. You can also go to Roy Has Fire’s Facebook site and follow the link there. The Castlegar News website also has a link on our story. Roy Has Fire has been together as a band for three years and has played at several shows around the West Kootenays but admit the contest is the most exciting event they’ve been involved with so far. “It’s been going great,” said James. “We’ve had lots of shows in the community. We’ve played shows at multiple re-
lays for life, Castlegar Sunfest, parties for people.” The band says there not strictly a rock band or strictly an alt band. “It’s kind of hard to describe it all,” said Bean. “There’s a bit of jazz influence. We’re all fond of swing. They’re some classic rock in there and some old punk in the sound.” “You can’t really pin us down to one sound,” said James. At shows, the band alternates between cover songs and originals. “Recently, we’ve been writing lots of originals and recording lots of originals ourselves,” said James. “Trying to get ourselves out there.” The band hopes doing well in the online contest will ‘get them out there’. “We all really enjoy making music and we
would like to make it a career,” said Monsen. “We’re really trying to take off right now,” said James. “We’re also doing this as a way of representing the Kootenays. We’re the only band in the contest from the Kootenays. All the other bands are coming from places like Vancouver.” The band members emphasize that it’s really important for everyone to get out and vote. “You can vote once a day,” said Bean, who admits the sign-up process can be cumbersome. “But once you get signed in, you can log in every day with your email and vote.” The voting ends on Feb. 18. Once the public decides on the top three, those bands will play in Vancouver, where the ultimate winner will be decided.

Community Castlegar’s Mir Centre to host Amnesty International Film Submitted
The Mir Centre for Peace in Castlegar will host part of the annual Amnesty International Film Festival on Wednesday, January 30. According to local activist Anna Purcell, “These films are really interesting and inspiring without being too disheartening. For example, the film Umoja: No Men Allowed follows a group
of Kenyan women who turn patriarchy on its head by starting their own village - with no men allowed. You will laugh and cheer with these women, even with the serious social critique.” Umoja is on a double bill with Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, about an internationally famous artist of the digital age who has been called China’s Andy Warhol. He blurs the line between art and
politics in his highly entertaining fight for free speech. These award-winning films have showed to sold out audiences in several other cities. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door. The films run from 7 to 9:30 pm on Wednesday, January 30. More films are showing in Nelson February 1-2 at the Shambhala Centre, Selkirk College .
Films run from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30.

Wine
Syrah is a go-to wine SUBMITTED
What’s the first grape varietal that grabs your attention when you are presented with a wine list or wine shop selection? For me, the first answer that comes to mind is Syrah. It’s a wine associated with big, bold reds but the grape is surprisingly versatile, inviting any number of winemaking styles.
In Idaho we often pick up a bottle or two from Coeur d’Alene Cellars, which makes several different Syrahs Syrah is known by many names, including Shiraz. The latter is used most commonly in Australia and South Africa, but also, strangely in Canada, where side-by-side growers might each refer to their vines by the different names. They are, though, the same grape. The grape was first made famous by growers in northern Rhone in France, notably on the hill known as Hermitage. Strangely enough, though, when we think of Hermitage now, it is often a reference to Penfolds Grange Hermitage. Considered by experts to be one of the world’s great wines, the Australian maker included Hermitage in the name until 1989, when the in-
La Dolce Vita ternational market required the name only be used in reference to the French location. It has been Penfolds Grange ever since, but if you mention Grange Hermitage, even though a quarter century has passed, few wine lovers won’t know what you are talking about. Here in BC, I have fond memories of the early Okanagan Syrah wines, especially those of Nichol Vineyards. Alex Nichol was the first vineyard owner in B.C. to plant the grape and I recall that his dream was to make a big, bold Syrah, like the Shiraz that Australia was having so much success with. It wasn’t to happen though. The Nichol vineyard is a few hundred feet above lake level in Naramata, and the grapes just don’t develop the sweetness needed to make the wine Alex had in mind. It was, nonetheless, a terrific wine and current owner Ross Hackworth has continued to have great success with the grape. While the Rhone area, California and Australia might continue to be the dominant forces in Syrah (and Shiraz) production, other regions have emerged. There aren’t a lot of wines that I would choose over well-made Syrahs from the Washington, for instance. On our trips to Walla Walla we have come to love the results. If I have ever tasted a poorly made Syrah
made in that state I have no recollection of it. In Idaho we often pick up a bottle or two from Coeur d’Alene Cellars, which makes several different Syrahs, all from grapes grown in Washington. Another of our favourite Syrahs comes from Sicily, the Italian island that has emerged on the world market in recent years, producing some of the very best wine values to be found. And having mentioned how versatile the grape was, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the kick we got out of attending a wine tasting event in Calgary years ago. We were mightily impressed by a sparkling Australian Shiraz. I don’t think the sparkling version has made many inroads into the market, but I was inspired to have a batch of Syrah made at the local Ubrew, after which we carbonated it before bottling. It was a big hit with our friends. You say po-tay-toe, I say po-tah-toe. You say Shiraz, I say Syrah. But let’s not call the whole thing off. There is plenty to enjoy in the wines made under either name. Just don’t same mistake with Petite Sirah, which is a different grape altogether.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week
January 18, 2013
Tip of the Week: As the world spins and cycles, it could be as early as the 18th or as late as the 20th, but usually on the 19th the Sun leaves Tropical Capricorn and enters Aquarius, like this year. Accordingly, we can begin to notice the changing distribution of sunlight, as in the days are getting longer here in the Northern Hemisphere and shorter in the Southern. Although the Sun is now in Aquarius, the New Moon Seed which occurred on January 11, 2013 is stamped by Capricorn. This provides an example of the overlapping of cycles. So, the Moon is waxing and it will be full in just over a week on January 26th and in Leo. Fire Full Moons are usually the most dramatic and Leo is the most dramatic sign so watch for that one. So, the current Moon Phase is the 1st Quarter which appears as a Half Moon and it occurs in Aries. Interestingly, this Moon Phase is symbolically linked to Aries and it too is a Fire Sign. So, we can expect the next 7-14 days to be particularly exciting and dramatic. The next New Moon occurs on February 8th at 11:20 pm PST and at 21 Aquarius 43. It is the Aquarian New Moon each year that coincides with Chinese New Year. Thus it is on that day when the Water Dragon passes the torch to the Water Snake. While the mythical Dragon is said to stir things up, it is during the year of the Snake when the real shedding of skins occurs. The overall Astrological portrait for 2013 synchronizes with this theme and I will offer a play by play over the course of the year. Stay tuned!

Life’s sobering realities may be weighing on you. These are producing changes that are likely challenging to accept and/or integrate. Consequently, you may feel frustrated, angry and/or rebellious. Directing all that energy to purposeful action could prove productive. Incidentally, you are being recognized now; intend to make the most of it.
Feeling committed in a big way is in the stars. If you are not, you may feel out of sync and would probably benefit from clarifying your objectives. Joining forces with those of others is also implied. Going it alone is less than likely or ideal. A quest for better answers or methods, higher truths and/or meaning is woven into the plot.
January often has a way of coinciding with sobering considerations. You have probably already had to attend to more than your share of responsibilities. Yet this week will present some openings. Getting away from it all for a while may be dancing in your mind. Take a break, you have likely earned it.
A good deal of interaction on relationship fronts has been keeping you busy. Now you want to shake-it-up! Yet you may not know how to or which approach to take. A creative challenge is indicated, one requiring analysis and strategy. As well, the answer has an ironic twist: make the effort to allow input from others.
The cold season of short daylight hours is probably not your favourite. At best you have been busy and productive. You will notice a shift this week. More social stimulation is forecasted. Others will call you out. Yet, part of you wants to lay low, cozy up, go deep and be receptive to incoming intuitions. Aim for balance.
Being disciplined enough to diversify your focus between fun, games and creative interests, on one hand, and more sobering business, duties and responsibilities on the other has set the tone of the year so far. This trend will continue; get used to it. Aim for quality breaks and accept that success now especially requires a high quantity of diligence.

Making key investments continues. Creating a more business like atmosphere at home and/or making your business environment more like home is likely. Either way, you want the right tools and/or furnishings to do the job. Weaving a foreign, exotic and/or futuristic accent into your plans will inspire creativity.
Your focus will turn to home and family now. Yet questions about where home is, or what do I truly need… will also arise. Many changes in your perspectives are brewing. These have contributed to changes in your lifestyle over the past several years. More are set to occur and they will be evident this week.
Clearing away old foundations, lifestyle patterns and rhythms and replacing them with new and better ones continues. This week your focus will shift to new people, interests and the satisfaction of curiosities. Looking to the future, you are seeking information, insights and answers about how to create a better balance.
The first weeks of the New Year have likely jumpstarted your focus. Dealing with sobering realities like death, insurance and/ or inheritances is likely. Deeper yet, questions about life, spirituality, destiny and the like are lingering. The overall focus is activating your own health concerns and considerations as well.
An itch for fun and games, playtime and/or travel is very active, yet has been blocked by a host of duties and responsibilities. This trend will continue for some time yet, so you will have to be extra strategic and alert to recognize and act upon the openings that do come about. One of those openings is happening now and for a few weeks. Act on it!
One of the great ironies of life is that it takes wisdom, resolve and discipline to be one’s own best friend. Due to the many tests and challenges, the competitive arena and the daily projections of imbalance and enmity from others, it is a lifelong challenge. Such success depends on the following: the very notion; the decision; quality of choices; action and follow through. It is time to be your best friend now.
