Use of poison to eliminate predators concerns biologist By Treena Mielke Reducing the population of wolves and coyotes in the Rimbey area with the use of poison has a well-known biologist, birdwatcher and photographer up in arms and she is demanding some answers to what she believes is an inhumane practice. Myrna Pearman, site service manager of Ellis Bird Farm, was surprised and disturbed to discover signs posted at the entrance of Town Creek Natural Area (south of Winfield) stating deadly poison baits had been set out to control coyotes and wolves in the area. The signs stated the poison had been set out under the direction of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. The signs also stated removing or interfering with the baits is unlawful and offenders will be prosecuted. Pearman, who has spent the majority of her career educating children and adults about nature and the importance of habitat conservation, was shocked. Not one to rest on her laurels about an issue so dear to her heart, Pearman immediately contact Terry Krause, a regional planner in the East Central Region of Alberta Tourism, Parks & Recreation to express her concern. However, Krause told her that the department not only did not use poison to control wolves and coyotes, they had no knowledge of the fact it was being used. “No one in their department (was) aware that a warning sign had been posted in the Town Creek Natural Area,” she said. Pearman said Krause later notified her he had learned no bait had been set up in the natural area but was set on adjacent Crown grazing lease lands where cattle losses had been reported. Signs had been posted in the surrounding area. Pearman found that information

of little comfort and again expressed her alarm and disgust about the practice in a letter to Diana McQueen, minister of Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development. “I find it unconscionable and offensive that Alberta still implements a draconian policy of poisoning predator mammals. Poison (especially strychnine and/or Compound 1080) is inhumane because it causes the animals a slow and agonizing death. Equally disturbing is the fact that poison bait stations attract non-target species, resulting in the unnecessary suffering and death of other animals. Poison affects not only scavengers, but all species up the food chain such as bald eagles, great horned owls and foxes.” Pearman, who is a licensed bird bander, believes the government has a double standard regarding the preservation of wildlife. “I am required to obtain permits and follow very strict regulations regarding the handling of wild birds so as to minimize disturbance and the risk of injury. Yet, it appears that your department can — with no apparent accountability and no communication with other departments — inflict suffering on wild animals and, by setting out bait stations that can potentially attract non-target animals, inexcusably waste our precious wildlife resources,” she said. The provincial government may want to consider The Wild Predator Loss, Control and Compensation Program adopted by British Columbia as an alternative, and much more humane way of controlling predation, she said. “This program acknowledges that indiscriminate poisoning of wolves does not work and encourages manager to make the necessary effort to identify and remove only those individuals that have atacked livestock. The retention of non-of-

Myrna Pearman, biologist and manager of Ellis Bird Farm, is concerned about the use of poison to control the population of wolves and coyotes in the Town Creek Natural Area, south of Winfield. Photo by Myrna Pearman fenders is important to long-term success because a preserved pack structure discourages new problem predators from moving into the territory.” Daryl Hunt, president of Rimbey Fish and Game Association, was not aware of the signs being posted, adding that enforcing such a rule would not be within the fish and game association’s mandate. However, he said poisoning may be the best way to rid the area of wolves and coyotes as shooting or trapping them may result in injury or death to the livestock being protected. “They are illusive animals and when you get your sights on one, you may hit a cow instead.

And trapping or snaring might not work either as a cow may step into the trap. There is a fine line. I don’t totally condemn them (Alberta Sustainable Resource Development) at all.” Hunt said fish and game association members go by the rule that big game and predators are “fair chase.” “We pride ourselves on being able to take our rifles and hunt those animals. Period.” A spokesperson from Alberta Sustainable Resource Development did not return calls from the Rimbey Review by press time. Pearman has not yet received a response to her letter.

Fines for fish trafficking handed out By Treena Mielke Illegal fish trafficking resulting in charges being laid last spring have proved costly for three area men who were issued hefty fines in Rimbey provincial court Jan. 4. Brendan Cox, spokesperson for Alberta Justice and the Solicitor General, said Frank Hofer received a $2,000 fine and a threeyear sport fishing license ban for buying fish harvested illegally. George Hofer was handed two $3,500 fines after being convicted of two counts of buying fish harvested illegally. He also was banned from having a sport fishing license for five years. Elias Hofer received fines of $2,000 and $5,000 for knowingly buying fish that were harvested illegally. His fishing license was revoked for five years. The men are among 27 individuals from Pigeon Lake, Wetaskiwin, Camrose, Rimbey and Edmonton who were charged with 72 counts under the Fisheries (Alberta) Act. The men were fined after being charged with forming an underground network of illegal buyers and sellers who worked together to avoid detection by authorities. Anyone with information that would assist in solving any fish or wildlife crime in Alberta is asked to contact a local Alberta government Fish and Wildlife Enforcement office or call the toll-free Report A Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800. The Report A Poacher line is open 24 hours. Anyone who provides information can remain anonymous and could qualify for a reward.

RCMP called to investigate case of starving horses Rimbey RCMP had a refreshing week, investigating only 25 files. Highlights of the week include theft, impaired driving, motor vehicle collisions and more illegal drug investigations. Tools stolen from oil lease Police are investigating a theft at an oil lease site near Township Road 442. Thieves entered a building and stole tools from the site during the
night of Jan. 5. Stolen truck recovered On Jan. 9 someone stole a Ford F350 diesel truck from a hotel parking lot sometime during the night. Later, that same day, the truck was recovered by RCMP in Sturgeon County. Owner ordered to feed starving horses Officers were approached by a
concerned citizen who brought to their attention a field of horses near Gull Lake that looked very skinny. One of the horses appeared to have recently died. Mounties immediately responded to the scene and found seven mares in a small pasture. One had already died and others in the pasture looked malnourished. There
was no visible feed available to the animals. The horses had pawed up the snow-covered ground to scrounge the little bit of grass that did exist in the small pasture. Further investigation revealed several more horses were penned up in corrals with no visible feed source. Continued on page 6

Did she or didn’t she? Ethics commissioner Neil Wilkinson has advised Premier Alison Redford he will investigate incessant opposition allegations she mislead the legislature and all Albertans about her involvement in the awarding of a $10 billion tobacco litigation contract to a law consortium connected to her ex-husband. For months Redford has denied she made the decision to award the contracts to International Tobacco Recovery Lawyers (ITRL). She maintains the decision was made by her successor as justice minister, Verlyn Olson, after she left cabinet on Feb. 16, 2011 to arrange her successful run for the Progressive Conservative party leadership. Opposition parties have now convinced the ethics commissioner there is at least enough evidence to investigate whether Redford breached sections of the Conflicts of Interest Act. They have documents that show the premieress in December 2010 and January 2011 had selected ITRL and instructed department officials to advise the successful firm and runners up that, “Shortly before Christmas, Minister Redford selected the International Tobacco Recovery Lawyers.” And an email was sent Jan. 6, 2011 from a partner in one of the
firms in the ITRL consortium saying, “We were very happy to learn that we will be working with you on the health care recovery claim.” Redford maintains the final contract to award the deal to the firm that included her ex-husband was signed in the summer of 2011 while she was out on the barbecue circuit drumming up votes for the leadership. Instead of pussyfooting around the issue with legal technicalities, Redford should have said ITRL offered the best deal for the government and Alberta, and state unequivocally the accusations of conflict are baseless. Oddly, but then again maybe not if you have an intimate understanding of the relationship between exes, former spouses are not covered in the government’s conflict of interest guidelines. Of course, Redford could have been proactive and asked the ethics commissioner for his opinion before it all hit the farm.
It doesn’t help the perception of her innocence when the usually unflappable speaker, Gene Zwozdesky, stuck his neck out by ruling Redford did not lie to the house and then slammed the door to Wildrose questions about the tobacco litigation contract — going so far as to disallow any discussion that mentioned the word tobacco. The ethics commissioner’s investigation should keep the opposition wolves at bay for a while but there’s still the matter of hospital queue jumping by Friends of the Party, expense claims from the premier’s sister, questionable donations from Oilers owner Daryl Katz among others, a $6-billion budget deficit, service cuts to seniors basic health and personal services, hospital wait times, borrowing billions for provincial infrastructure, and a forced contract on doctors. 2013 is shaping up to be a watershed year for transparency and accountability under the dome.
Reflections of a long, Alberta winter It has been less than a month since the first day of winter, and already I am sick of it. From what I understand, lots of other people are sick of it too, and have wandered off to warmer parts of the world, even snagging seat sales to places like Vancouver, where it is dark and dreary and rains incessantly which makes your hair flop like a wet dish rag, unless, of course, you have curly hair, then it springs around your head something like one of those metal scrubbing things. (I think I must have been spending too much time in the kitchen lately, since I keep relating hair to kitchen like objects.) But, getting back to winter in Alberta. It is true. It is cold, and my teeth chatter lots for the two and a half seconds it takes to walk to my car to start it so it will be at a reasonable temperature when I slide behind the steering wheel. It is true. The roads are often not fit for cars or humans or any moving form, and I know from experience that watching the car in front of me do a crazy careening thing before finally end up in the ditch is really bad for my blood pressure. It is true. Snow, with all its pure white, almost ethereal beauty can quickly lose its appeal when you are looking at it from behind the vantage point of a snow shovel. I thought that I faced the challenges of an Alberta winter like a true Albertan, strong and silent, thinking deep thoughts about nature and wonder and magic
that I kept mysteriously stored inside, only to be brought to life in the spring, kind of like the wild rose. After all, I was born here. I am a child of the Prairies, born West of the Fifth for crying out loud. I remember lots of cold, except, I was, of course, Treena Mielke a kid, and kids have some On The Other Side sort of insulation so they don’t’ really feel cold, even when they should be freezing. The winter of my 15th year I lived on Vancouver Island for a short time. I liked it there, the ocean amazed and fascinated me and I learned to love clam chowder soup, but, mostly, I just wanted one thing. I wanted to come home. And, so I did. Back to the land of snow and ice, booster cables and snow tires. I love it here. But, apparently, as I slip and slide and shiver through yet another winter, my lips have been frozen into one single lament. “I’m so cold, I’m freezing.” I have said this once, maybe twice, ok, probably a hundred thousand times. And people heard me and, I’m thinking, felt sorry
for me, but mostly just wanted me to ‘shut up.’ And, weirdly enough, it seemed almost every single one of my Christmas presents was designed, in some way, shape or form, to keep me warm and, no doubt, to serve the other purpose, as well. There were the plug in slippers that vibrated and heated up and were guaranteed to keep my feet toasty warm. There was the towel warmer than allows me to slip out of my bath and wrap myself in a delicious layer of warmth. There were the boots, designed to keep feet warm for temperatures of up to 40 below. There was the hot chocolate heater upper thing that promised to whip and froth my drink to chocolaty perfection. There were several flavored drinks in a package with a snowman cup, which was just the right size for my frozen fingers to curl around with almost sinful pleasure. I’m sure the duct tape tucked into the slippers was an accident, and not really meant to be used to silence me. I shuffle to the hot chocolate thing, which is only as far as I can go before my slippers become unplugged, and glance out the window where white smatters of snow hit the window with a stormlike ferocity. I sip my hot chocolate and curl my fingers around the snowman mug. I smile. Winter. It’s not that bad.

In several recent cases, Rimbey Mounties have been involved in drug investigations elsewhere that have led to charges. Disqualified drivers caught In four recent cases, officers have charged drivers for operating a motor vehicle while their licenses were suspended and they were disqualified from driving. In all cases, their vehicles have been seized for a minimum of 30 days. One offender was sentenced by the judge to serve two months in jail. In the other cases, the accused drivers were sentenced to serve 30 days in the crow bar motel. Take your valentine dancing Plan ahead to enjoy a “date nightâ€? on Feb. 9. County council to discuss financial contribution to asphalt for CARS By Amelia Naismith Ponoka County council is debating how much money to contribute to the paving project at the Rimbey Kinsmen Motorsports Park Project: Central Alberta Raceways. The request came in the form of an update presentation at the Jan. 8 meeting. By the end of the presentation council had decided on two courses of action. The first, to pursue a contractor and come up with reasonable costs for the asphalt project. The second was their financial discussion. “It’s (the park) just been a package that’s come together with the community and the county like you wouldnít believe. We’ve had stepping stones we’ve had to get to, and weíve come across them all,” said track manager Rod Schaff. Schaff reported on the status of the projects within the park and outlined what still needs to be done before the season opens in June. “Our major mission is to provide a
safe and exciting motorsports facility,” said Schaff. He feels having the motorsport park at Rimbey will help keep kids off the street and keep both the town and county in the spotlight of Western Canada. ìThis facility is going to do that. It’s the tip of the iceberg. It’s going to have such as snowball effect when we get things going.” Schaff is receiving letters of support and interest in the track, which he believes will attract new business to the area while encouraging current citizens to stay, especially younger families. Bob Ebertz, president of Top Eliminator Edmonton, expressed in an email to Schaff that they are interested in the track. “They would like to support our track in any way they can, plus they would like to have us in their events. This is a real crowd pleaser. These cars, they’re basically all 6.9 seconds and faster,” said Schaff. Chris Klassen, president of the
Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing Association, has also expressed interest in the park for the 2014 season. “They can only go to certain tracks. They have to be dead smooth, as you can appreciate on two wheels. They have to have lots of run out and our track fits the bill,” said Schaff. The association’s events generally have 100 bike entries as well as other groups, such as the Nostalgia Funny Cars. Schaff says, in central Alberta there are 50 known junior dragsters, starting at 12 years old, who have no place to race. “That’s the start of this. You get these kids involved and they tell their friends, now they’re not racing on the street. “I’m seeing a problem right now, our summer might not be long enough,” said Schaff with a laugh. One of the biggest projects of the park is the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) sanctioned track. The first 660 feet have been
completed, including the concrete launch pad. “That meets the specs of the top tracks in Canada and the United States,” said Schaff. He said the NHRA was willing to allow a 150-foot launch pad, however, the larger one provides more safety. “But they said the big tracks, the guys who want to get the big sponsors — 660 feet. So that’s what we did.” The balance of the track’s strip is asphalt-ready, with grading and compaction. When the snow is gone a grader will come with a laser level to touch up the surface. A pit area, where contestants would park, has been sloped for runoff and is ready for base gravel. “That’ll be a work in progress over the years. Our major hope on that for sponsorship is a lot of guys will come in and want to purchase a pit area,” explained Schaff. The staging area, where cars enter onto the track, must be asphalt but the roads leading to the staging area will start out as gravel. “The
guys with the really low vehicles will need real good gravel, maybe Chinese pavement,” said Schaff. Eventually he hopes to have the whole area paved and feel this is a realistic goal. Recently a motocross track was added to the park. “They had a professional track builder come up and lay everything out so that things were done properly and safely,” said Schaff. “They’ve been getting calls from all over Alberta to hold events for this.” The park also holds mud-bog pit racing events and in the future Schaff wants a sprint boat racing area developed. To entice sponsors to the park, Schaff says they need to get the asphalt laid down at a cost between $500,000 and $700,000. Ponoka County CAO Charlie Cutforth is concerned these numbers are too high. He believes TBL Construction should be looked at for the project because they do more specialized jobs.

Seniors talk about issues and services By Treena Mielke Seniors attending a seminar in Rimbey recently listed friendly faces, a hospital, stores that deliver, and a police force as positives that help enhance their lifestyle and keep them living in Rimbey. About 40 people attended the half-day “When I’m 64” seminar held at the Seniors’ Drop In Centre Jan. 3 to talk about challenges and issues they face as they age. “There were no surprises, really,” said Peggy Makofka, executive director of Rimbey FCSS, which co-sponsored the seminar along with Rimoka Housing Foundation and the Seniors Drop In Centre. “People really value having access to M MOORE’S AGRI-TRADE LTD TEA OUR homecare and the handivan.” OORES EAL TY CA Cathy Hatt EALTY 780-388-3759 TTrent rent Wirsig Makofka said seniors appreciate services al® .MooresR .ca www.MooresR .MooresRealty ealty.ca An entirewww team of REAL TORS ealty working for you REALTORS Lor raine Moore Lorraine ready available. Reader questions need for library Dear Editor: I also have questions regarding the library needing space. In this day and age, do we even need a library? All books are available online including the good ones that have been censored like Huckleberry Finn. We live in a digital age and the book is coming to an end. Why do we need a huge amount of space to store so many obsolete items. If you need information on an issue or just directions on how too, Google will show you how, where and when. Did you know that Google servers hold the entire knowledgebase of humankind?
Store owner wants seatbelt check moved
Need a good book to read? Try www.gutenberg.org. There are literally millions of books on this site all free and not one tree had to die. I say scrap the library shred the books for recycling and use a newly vacated room for space for social meet ups and movie nights for the kiddies. These activities, I believe are a heck of a lot more important than a good book. Everyone knows that paying rent is money you will never see again. Why flush our hardearned tax dollars down the tubes for such an antiquated technology when a device on your lap will do nicely? Think about it, $36,000, which is equal to one year’s rent at the provincial buildHockey action: Bashaw defeated Rimbey boys peewee team 4-0 on ing, would buy an E-reader for every person in home ice Jan. 5 Matthew Kohke tries hard to get Rimbey on the scorethis town with loads left over. board. Dear Editor, Is there nowhere else in town that the police could set up their seatbelt check besides in front of my store? It takes up customer parking spaces, idling engines discharge fumes that come in the door, and even the no parking spot in front of the loading dock is used. When this practice was first started, I asked that vehicles be directed to park across the street just off the alley where it wouldn’t affect anything else. The officers complied for awhile, but are now back to having them park in front of the store again. I talked to the sergeant this morning (Jan. 10) and voiced my concerns and objections once again. It appears that I wasted my time and effort. The police would like our respect, and in most cases they deserve it, but don’t we as well? L. Scott www.rimbeyauction.com Rimbey New and Used

What’s Happening #50 - # 70
LOYEK SCHMIDT - Doris Alvina It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Doris on Dec 26th, 2012 after nearly a year long battle with cancer. She was born on May 13, 1939 at the Wetaskiwin Hospital to Edward and Marjory Schmidt. The family moved to the Hoadley area in 1940 where her father farmed. She started school in 1945 at the Pineville School at Hoadley walking the two miles or so with her older sister, Doreen and brother, Robert. After High School she took a secretarial course in Edmonton and worked for the Dept. of Mental Health for a number of years. She moved to Calgary in 1972 looking for a change of career and weather. She took a travel consultant course at SAIT and worked in that business in Calgary till moving to Toronto in 1989. She visited many countries enjoying Russia, Ireland, Greece as well as numerous others. After retiring she moved back to Rimbey in 2009. Doris loved the arts, music and was an avid reader. She loved to cook and we all enjoyed letting her! In the last few years she started painting and was looking forward to her retirement to pursue that endeavor. Doris is survived by her sister, Doreen (Fred) Glanfield of Rimbey, her brother, Jim Schmidt of Winfield, her brother Greg (Shirley) Schmidt of Neapean, Ont., her sisterin-law, June Schmidt of Manning as well as fourteen nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Edward in 1993, Marjory in 2010 and her brother, Robert in 2011. Following Doris’ wishes cremation has taken place and no service will be held. Her ashes will be buried at Hoadley beside her parents’ graves in the spring. Bentley history is now well documented By June Norvila There were happy faces all round following the success of the launch of the new Bentley history book entitled, Bentley - A Gateway through Time by the Bentley and District Historical Society on Dec. 27 at the Blindman Valley Agricultural Centre. There was a good attendance, with many people from outside the community attending. The program opened with the singing of O Canada and a welcome and invocation by historical society president Jack Siebenga. After an introduction of the local “Queen Elizabeth II,” Her Majesty offered a message to the community, and indeed the country, much to the delight of attendees, as the event also honored her 60th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee. The singing of God Save the Queen followed her appearance. After the introduction of the historical society board, Mike Stewart, who has been involved in printing many community history books and is the general manager of Prolific Graphics, the firm from Red Deer that printed the books, offered up some interesting statistics concerning the publishing of the Bentley books. Stewart reported that there were 1,296 pages with approximately one million words. He said 11 tons of paper and paperboard were used, along with 50 pounds of ink and 4,000 feet of gold foil. The two-volume set includes 2,246 photos and 20 maps, and took the company 600 hours to format onto pages, he said, and they needed to use 165 printing plates. He offered great accolades about the terrific job done by the very dedicated, keen, enthusiastic Bentley group. The winner of the free book set, drawn earlier from among names of those who had entered an early contest to prompt people to contribute articles and stories, was Doreen Woods. Then came the part of the event many people had been waiting for — the live auction of the limited edition sets. The reprint of the original history book printed in 1982 was included along with the double-volume new set. The auction was exceptionally well handled by accomplished auctioneer Allan Olson from Rimbey who knew how to get the most from the bidders while entertaining the crowd. The very first set to be offered for sale, the “gold copy set,” brought $3,000. The second set fetched $1,200, while the third set was purchased for $400. Olson warned people not to wait too long to bid and he was right. When there
A local “Queen Elizabeth II” appearance was included in the Bentley and District Historical Society history book launch. June Norvila Photo were only two sets left, the price went up. The fourth set sold for $550 and the last limited edition set brought $750. In total, the limited edition sets brought in $5,900 for the historical society. Following the auction, free refreshments including hot dogs and Queen Elizabeth II decorated cakes were offered and people could now buy the regular new two-volume set or get a deal that included the older publication as well for only $100. There were display booths by the Bentley Elks Lodge No. 318 and the Bentley Museum Society. Stuart Lyster offered free horse-drawn sleigh rides courtesy the Bentley Museum Society. There was even free face painting offered for the kids, but because the event drew an older type crowd the sleigh rides and face painters were not kept real busy. Bentley - A gateway Through Time a two-volume set, or as a three-book set that includes the reprint of the first book can be purchased from society president Jack Siebenga, secretary Myrna Robinson, treasurer Lorna Landry, and directors Cora Knutson and Suzie Wiese, as well as at the Bentley Town Office and the Bentley Museum. About 300 new sets have been sold to date.
