A Burnaby senior was rescued Monday night by Burnaby firefighters who had to cut him free from his clutter with a chainsaw. Burnaby RCMP received a call at about 10 p.m. from someone who had not been able to reach the man for a couple of days, said Corp. Dave Reid. Police were told the man was not answering his phone, had been ill and had mental health issues related to hoarding. Burnaby Mounties went to
the home in the 6900-block of Mandy Avenue with Burnaby Fire Department and an ambulance. “We made verbal contact with the guy but he basically told us he was trapped underneath a whole pile of debris, couldn’t get out, couldn’t move, hadn’t moved in a couple of days,” Reid said. So the rescuers kicked in the door, and firefighters used a chainsaw to cut through the clutter to get to him and free him. The man, in his 70s, was taken to Burnaby Hospital with a “severe

injury” to a leg, which had been trapped underneath him, cutting off circulation to it for a couple of days, Reid said. He was suffering from dehydration and there was reportedly no heat or electricity in the home. “Had no one called, we would have found him down the road and it would’ve been a lot more tragic.” It was a serious case of hoarding, he said. The clutter was “floor to ceiling in every room, on both floors. So it was bad.”
While police sometimes go into homes with a lesser degree of hoarding, “this is an extreme case, you don’t see these too often.” Hoarding is a symptom of a mental illness, Reid said. If the man has no family to look after him, under the Mental Health Act, social services could get involved. The house has been the subject of complaints in the past about unsightly premises.

A 44-year-old Burnaby man has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the 2009 stabbing death of his estranged wife. She was killed in front of three of their five children who were aged three, seven and 10 at the time. A publication ban has been imposed on the names of all those involved, who are referred to by their initials in Monday’s court judgment. The victim, L.V., was killed Sept. 21, 2009 at her home in South Burnaby. Their three daughters were home at the time while their sons, aged 14 and 16, were at school. The defendant, O.V., had been living in a separate residence in Burnaby for about two months. His wife and children planned to move to a new address the following month without informing O.V., according to the reasons for judgment by Justice Catherine Bruce, and packing boxes and materials would have been evident in the house.

Mini We Day hopes to inspire Jennifer Zhang and Cynthia Chiang were so inspired by the We Day events they attended at Rogers Arena they decided to organize one of their own. The mini We Day they’re hosting at Burnaby North secondary on Friday won’t have the star power of a Mikhail Gorbachev, Desmond Tutu or Magic Johnson, and there won’t be 20,000 screaming teenagers packed into North’s gym and multi-purpose room, but Zhang and Chiang are hoping their event will be just as inspiring. We Day is an annual event for youth put on by Free The Children, an international charity dedicated to creating opportunities for young people through active citizenship and child-focused development. The day-long celebrations fill giant hockey arenas across Canada and in Seattle. The event Zhang, Chiang and the executive from Burnaby North’s human rights club
and leadership programs have put together will be on a much smaller scale. Up to 150 students from North, Burnaby South and Mountain secondary schools will spend the afternoon attending workshops to learn about the work Free The Children does around the world to help give kids better lives and how they can get their friends and peers involved through education and fundraising activities like bottle drives, doughnut sales, karaoke competitions. “We want to get everyone to know what Free The Children is,” says Zhang, who’s in Grade 12. “We’ve already made a big change in our own school, so if everyone brings ideas back to their school, it just creates that much more exposure to more students.” Two years ago, says Chiang, North didn’t have a human rights club; now there are about 200 members. Last year they raised $1,000 for Free The Children. Organizing their modest event, which also includes a keynote

Urban Digs Farm has launched its harvest box program for the season, with plans to make them available to the general public soon, after giving priority to returning members and people on its waitlist. The program involves participants paying up front for a share of the upcoming crop from its South Burnaby and Delta farms. The money provides the farmers with the capital they need to plant and maintain it. At harvest time,
customers receive a weekly box of produce and potentially other farm products such as honey, eggs and flowers. “In addition to the traditional vegetable box, we are offering what we are calling the ‘Beasty Box’ which will be a weekly harvest box filled with allnatural, ethical, locally sourced meat,” said Urban Digs Farm manager Julia Smith by email. He had previous convictions for assault and mischief involving abuse of his wife. On the day of the murder, he arrived unannounced and while the victim did not want him to enter, she allowed him to use the washroom. He stayed to make an herbal remedy for a stomach complaint, they argued and he eventually grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed his wife while she sat on the couch watching television with her three daughters. He dropped the knife in the sink then fled. The girls ran to a neighbour’s home to call police as their phone line was disconnected in anticipation of the move. O.V. was arrested by New Westminster police a short time later at the Petro-Canada station at Canada Way and 10th Avenue in Burnaby. The autopsy found L.V. bled to death from 15 stab wounds, most of which pierced vital organs. Swabs of blood taken from O.V.’s nose and cheek after his arrest matched that of himself and the victim. Police officers testified that O.V. was calm and showed no emotion after his arrest. Hours before the murder, O.V. visited the Burnaby RCMP detachment to complain that people were following him. Several of their children testified that O.V. had a history of mental health issues, was paranoid and physically abused their mother and themselves and accused their mother of having an affair and taking drugs. In court, O.V. admitted he killed his wife but defence lawyer Roxane Vachon argued that his mental state at the time was an issue. A forensic psychiatrist, Dr. S. Iskander, assessed O.V. in 2011

City to review Bonsor’s future in face of new growth Wanda Chow
wchow@burnabynewsleader.com
With condo towers springing up in the Metrotown area, the pressure will be on Bonsor Recreation Complex to accommodate the new residents. Parks and recreation director Dave Ellenwood said he expects to look at the future of the centre within the next two years, with the first step to be sitting down with council to find out what they want to see there. Meantime, significant changes are expected at the centre this year. The new two-storey, 8,200-square-foot seniors centre, being built as a community amenity by Polygon next to its Chancellor at Metrotown highrise residential development at Bennett Street and Nelson Avenue, is expected to be completed late this spring, Ellenwood said. When the seniors move into the new facility, they’ll free up about 3,600 square feet, roughly one-third of Bonsor’s space, on the upper floor which will be redesigned and renovated at a cost of $150,000 to $200,000. Ellenwood said once a concept plan is completed, it
will be presented to the public, in about two months time. It’s looking like the space will be used to meet the high demand for multipurpose space that can be divided into smaller rooms, he said. With installation of a sprung wood floor, it would be usable for everything from Pilates and aerobics to card games. Additional smaller rooms could also be built to accommodate facilities such as a cycling studio, similar to the one that has proved popular at Cameron Rec Centre. That renovation work will likely be finished at the end of this year or in early 2014. Another project expected to ease the space demands isn’t even at Bonsor. That would be the new Edmonds Community Centre and pool scheduled to open this spring. “We think the Edmonds dry space with two gyms will take a lot of pressure off Bonsor,” he said. People from Edmonds who have migrated to Bonsor to use its pool and recreation facilities will be able to get those services closer to home. In fact, the
Edmonds centre is expected to attract users from across Burnaby and even Vancouver, just because it’s new. Once the dust settles, parks and rec staff will look at what’s needed at Bonsor to accommodate the thousands of new residents expected in the Metrotown neighbourhood. Funding is available for projects through the community amenity funds developers pay in exchange for bonus density, he noted. If additional facilities need to be built, it might involve building on Bonsor’s parking lot, or on adjacent Bonsor Park. Ellenwood noted that council has been wanting to acquire all the properties that make up the triangle-shaped land where the cenotaph is located, bounded by Nelson and Jubilee avenues and Imperial Street, for inclusion in the park. That would allow for redevelopment of the park and more room for new amenities to built in future, he said. But first, Ellenwood and senior city staff will have to meet with council to get their feedback before conducting a feasibility study.

ADRIAN RAESIDE:
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Stifling debate
LAST WEEK: Are you concerned about the assessed value of your home?
If the federal Conservative government hasn’t already thought about its penchant for omnibus bills in Parliament, it needs to. The Idle No More movement has focused some of its attention on changes to federal legislation like the Navigable Waters Protection Act and Environmental Assessment Act, which are rolled into an omnibus bill. These bills, often part of a budget, give MPs little chance to debate important issues because there are so many items jammed together. The Conservatives did not invent this strategy, but they have honed it to a fine art. Omnibus bills began appearing regularly during the five years the Conservatives governed with a minority, and were often crafted in such a way as to keep at least one opposition party from voting against the government. While this was an understandable legislative strategy, the need for such omnibus bills does not exist when there is a majority government. But the government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper likes the approach, because it limits the usefulness of Parliament and the ability of its critics to draw much public attention. That worked fine when the critics were solely from the opposition parties. But when they are from outside Parliament and are energized by a variety of causes, as is Idle No More, omnibus bills have the potential to do a great deal of harm. The harm comes from emasculating legitimate opposition in Parliament, where differences within a democracy need to be discussed. If too many people believe Parliament doesn’t work any more, and this leads them to do serious damage to Canada’s economy because of their frustrations, omnibus bills become very dangerous. – Black Press

The pros and cons of legal suites Many cities do a strange little dance when it comes to secondary suites. It’s all secrecy. Hush-hush, wink-wink, nudge-nudge. Throughout Burnaby there are hundreds and hundreds of such suites, despite the fact they are illegal—unless they are used by family members and easily accessible from the main part of the house. In fact, most people living in these suites have no idea they’re illegal, or exactly what that means. For those who do know, they might feel they have little recourse if there are issues with their living conditions. But that could soon change, as city council may make it possible for people to legalize existing suites and for builders to build the suites into their future houses. So what does it all mean, really? It’s being touted as a way to give more housing options in an increasingly unaffordable city, but it’s unclear whether it will have much impact.
Chris Bryan The legal route may actually be too cost-prohibitive for people considering adding a suite to their home. A downside to the current system though is, if you live in a suite and your neighbour suddenly decides they don’t like your new hairstyle all they have to do is call City Hall. Inspectors will stop by and might say to the homeowner/ landlord well, everything in here looks OK but you’re going to have to get rid of that second stove. Take out the wiring and we’ll be back for inspection. And then suddenly you, the renter, are out on the street. Sure, the owner/landlord could just rip the wires out, get inspection, then put them back in

(as some do). But that’s not really ideal, is it? That’s the strange dance that goes on right now. City inspectors know it well. In fact, when a new home is built, wiring is often stashed in the walls so that once the final inspections are done, the crews can quietly return and suite it. Will it meet code? One hopes. If Burnaby moves to a legal suites situation, there will still be those who choose the illegal-suite option. It will no doubt be cheaper, and even let them have three and four suites, which is not unusual in Burnaby. And for people who want to make their existing suites legal, they might face a big bill to bring it up to code. Advocates for low income people, like Acorn Canada, say legalizing secondary suites is a positive move. But those at Acorn and Tenant Resource and Advisory Centre (TRAC) would also like to see Burnaby adopt a Standards of Maintenance bylaw for all rental propertes, which would effectively

give the city the power to inspect everything from three-storey walkups to secondary suites, to ensure they’re safe, clean and in good repair. After all, saying a suite is “legal” doesn’t mean it isn’t deplorable. And there is some awful accommodation out there. It’s an awkward reality that with illegal suites, we turn a blind eye because low income people need a place to live. And yet, upholding a standards bylaw could be pricey for the city. Hiring additional inspectors would be expensive, though the fines generated from slum landlords could offset some of that. So as the city moves forward in coming months and fleshes out its plans, and decides whether it will begin legalizing suites, the effectiveness of the shift will depend upon how they execute the new regime. COMMENT
Shelter would help homeless make transition Re: Burnaby’s silence on homelessness deafening (Column, NewsLeader, Jan. 11) The “deafening silence” on homelessness is not altogether due to a lack of caring or compassion, but rather to frustration. Social service agencies have been trying for many years to establish at least one permanent shelter in Burnaby. However, for just as many years they have been thwarted by the city’s intransigent attitude towards any kind of such a project and the agencies proposing it. The Progressive Housing Society, silenced, has obtained funding from provincial and federal sources for a mobile service, as well as a program of finding accommodation and providing support for reintegration of the homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless. The integration would be much more rapid and lasting if there were a shelter where the initial stages could be undertaken. Doris Routliffe Burnaby •••••
Thank you for keeping the torch lit on this important social issue. Aside from identifying locations for a permanent homeless shelter, this issue will not get any attention in a municipal non-election year unless there was a reason for Burnaby city council to pay attention to this issue, as there is no opposition bringing this forward at council. (Disclosure: I ran for council in 2011 and was not successful.) Perhaps a date needs to be set and concerned citizens can meet in a school gymnasium one evening or at a local public library to discuss the willingness to proceed on Burnaby’s behalf. My question is: under what conditions would Burnaby be agreeable to moving forward with a facility? Let’s find reasons to move forward. If five people show up at the meeting, then it indicates this issue is not important to the voters of Burnaby. If a gymnasium is packed with concerned voters, I am confident city council will take notice. I know I would if I was sitting on council. This is an important issue to me as a long-time Burnaby resident. What do others think? Would
you show up? Tweet me if you would (@jimfavaro). If I get 50 tweets from Burnaby citizens who are concerned, I will organize an evening meeting and invite our city council representatives, so we can continue this dialogue and find solutions. Jim Favaro Burnaby
Way to stir the pot I read with a great deal of interest the column on the homelessness issue in Burnaby. I agree, we as citizens are much too silent on important issues in our community. After reading the editorial I turned the page and read the letters to the editor. Oh boy, if a couple of those letters don’t create some debate than we are all brain dead. First was a letter from a right-wing gun nut stating guns save lives, and the second was from a left-wing pinko talking about the ongoing genocide of the Aboriginal people of Canada. Way to stir the pot. Larry Melnyk Burnaby
taxpayer funds not for propoganda It’s enough to make you wonder why we pay taxes at all. Recently, the BC Liberals have spent $15 million in taxpayer money to promote themselves and their economic action plan, which according to recent statistics has not succeeded in producing jobs at anywhere near the rate promised. We also have the newest outrage from Ottawa, where Minister Fantino used the CIDA website to write a partisan attack against the NDP and supporting the Conservatives by name. This is nothing new, but it’s startling to see the extent to which our right-wing governments are going to spend your money and violate the impartiality of government agencies simply to deliver partisan attacks against their opponents. Even if we’re generous and say that work time was not used to produce the BC Liberal ads, or that staff time wasn’t used to post the CIDA rant, that still doesn’t explain why they’re being promoted on sites that are supposed to be meant for official government information.
A reminder, I think, is needed for our provincial and federal governments: Orwell’s 1984 was not meant to be an instruction manual, and we have no need for the endless propagandizing, particularly when the government is using our tax dollars to finance the propaganda. Trevor Ritchie Burnaby

BC hydro keep hands off the meter Big Brother at BC Hydro has sent me a letter to say he can’t wait any longer. He’s going to come and replace my old analog meter, still working perfectly, with his new so-called smart meter. I tried to tell him no, I don’t want the thing. I sent a letter last March to Corix along with copies to my MLA, the premier, the leader of the opposition and B.C.’s energy minister. I also laminated a form, signed by myself and wired to the meter which warns Corix to “Stop, Do Not Proceed With Meter Removal.” More recently, on Nov. 9, I installed a more legible “No Trespassing Corix” sign below my analog meter. However, after receiving the letter from Hydro, I phoned them and was given assurances, which I don’t believe, that the meters are safe. Several have already caught on fire in B.C., resulting in the destruction of at least one home in Mission. I was told they would be here in four to six weeks despite my “No Trespassing” sign and despite Burnaby city council’s motion for a moratorium on their installation. Is BC Hydro a law unto itself whereby they don’t have to respect the wishes of a property owner? I’ve told these people privately, now I’m stating it as publicly as possible. Stay off my property for the purpose of changing my meter. When the rights of a taxpaying property owner can be abused by a government agency, what do we have but a dictatorship? Jim Ervin Burnaby

Philippe Schick’s lightbulb idea was to get rid of the lightbulb. The vice president of engineering for Cooledge Lighting Inc. had an idea to create solid state lighting arrays that could illuminate broad areas without the heat generation or energy inefficiencies of conventional incandescent or florescent lights. But to turn his patents into a marketable product would require a huge investment in technology and talent, a challenge for a fledgling company already relying on venture capital to get off the ground. Schick and his Burnaby-based team of engineers searched the world, but the solution to their needs was in their own backyard, at Simon Fraser University’s 4D Labs. “They welcomed us with open arms,” said Schick of the applications and science-driven research institute that helped his company get his idea to the prototype stage. “They had the

Auditor offered two-year extension Tom Fletcher Black Press
Premier Christy Clark wants to amend the Auditor General Act to offer John Doyle a twoyear extension of his term, due to end this year. Clark told a news conference in Vancouver Wednesday that she has asked the three B.C. Liberal MLAs on the selection committee to offer the extension to Doyle, as they prepared to meet Wednesday with the two NDP MLAs on the B.C. Auditor General John Doyle committee. Clark said the amendments would change on the committee must be the B.C. auditor-general’s term unanimous for that to happen, to a non-renewable eight-year and their votes and reasons are term, to avoid controversy as officially secret due to personnel politicians vote on their own privacy restrictions. financial watchdog. All five MLAs was the subject of a random

Liberals who form the majority are Chilliwack MLA John Les and Peace River South MLA Blair Lekstrom, both of whom are not seeking re-election in May. Burnaby-Deer Lake MLA Kathy Corrigan and Surrey-Whalley MLA Bruce Ralston represent the NDP on the committee. Opposition MLAs cite Doyle’s reports criticizing the recent buildup of BC Hydro debt and the state of B.C.’s forest inventory in the wake of a devastating pine beetle epidemic as likely reasons why Doyle wasn’t reappointed. Doyle is also leading a court action seeking release of detailed defence lawyer billings for former ministerial aides Dave Basi and Bobby Virk, whose $6 million in legal costs were covered by the province after they pleaded guilty to breach of trust in the 2002 sale of BC Rail operations.

Yet the closer we get to either the more elusive the colour. Over the centuries since its introduction into Western art via Arab traders in search of Venetian gold, blue has been associated with transcendence, divinity, emotion, depression and even pornography. The stone lapis lazuli was transported 3,500 miles from Afghan mines and processed with pine resin, beeswax and
Linda Lewis acacia gum, then soaked in a caustic lye solution by Venetian artists to become ultramarine, literally meaning “from across the sea.” Artists like Giotto, the father of the Italian Renaissance, was one of the first to utilize blue when he
used by artists to denote deep emotion, the most famous being Picasso’s Blue Period. When his best friend Casagemas shot his girlfriend and, believing he had killed her, committed suicide Picasso was devastated and his overwhelming grief began to appear in canvases painted with the colour blue expressing his depression and eventual healing. Another artist Yves Klein took up the cause of the colour blue and along with The piece Blue Puzzle is by artist Olive Leung, currently among the works on exhibit at the arts council’s Deer Lake Gallery.

a chemist developed International Klein Blue or IKB which he used in monochrome painting, sculpture and performance art in the 1950s. Blue is also associated with melancholy and sadness. These days the cures are pharmaceutical and only a slight change of body chemistry is believed to be enough to bring us back to our natural(?) state of happiness. Historically the condition of melancholia was associated with genius and creativity. The term “blue devils” referring to these conditions was eventually applied to the Blues, a musical genre which originated in the Deep South of the U.S. Primarily an African-American form of music, lyrics were associated with misery and oppression documenting their experience of enslavement. All of these blues are being celebrated in the exhibit January Blues: a celebration of the condition blue. All of the art pieces are blue, from an installation called Balance by Nicole Smith, to a post in the gallery painted IKB blue by Burnaby artist Bill Thomson. The exhibit runs until Feb. 2.

GVHBA gearing up for a great 2013 By Kerry Vital
The Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association is welcoming the new year with a slate of big events. The first will take place on Feb. 6 at the Delta Burnaby Hotel and Conference Centre. The Legends of Housing event will include a panel of residential construction industry leaders including David Podmore of Concert Properties, Peeter Wesick of Wesgroup and Ward McAllister of Ledingham McAllister discussing where they think the housing industry is going and their experiences in the industry, followed by a question and answer session. The session will be moderated by urban design specialist Bob Ransford of Counterpoint Communications. The GVHBA will also announce the finalists for the 2013 Ovation Awards at the event, which is also the first dinner meeting of the year. Tickets can be purchased on the GVHBA website until Feb. 4. The next big event in the GVHBA calendar is the BC Home and Garden Show on Feb. 20 to 24. The association hosts the GVHBA Pro Renovation + Design Centre every year, showcasing before and after photos of professional renovations by member companies. You are also able to book a free consultation with a renovation or design professional. The event will take place at BC Place, with tickets available on the day or at www.bchomeandgardenshow.com. Admission is free, though preregistration is required on the GVHBA website and attendees are asked to bring an item for the Surrey Food Bank. “Our experts will help first-time buyers consider all available options and important issues before they take that critical first step onto the property ladder,” says GVHBA CEO Bob de Wit. “Real estate continues to be a hot topic in this region, so seminar attendance is expected to be as many or greater than the 750 young people who attended last year’s event.” The seminar will cover a wide range of topics, including
finding the best home for you, how to choose a location, what’s involved when buying a home before it’s built and wading through the legal considerations that come with purchasing a home for the first time. Doors will open at 6 p.m. to allow participants to talk to the experts one-on-one, and the seminar will take place between 7 and 9 p.m. For more information about any of these events and to see a list of others, visit www.gvhba.org.
