Letters are going to more than 38,000 people in British Columbia whose personal data was copied onto a data stick and shared without permission last year. On Jan. 14, Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid announced details of a data breach that led the ministry to fire seven health ministry staff and contractors involved in patient research related
to approval of drugs for B.C.’s Pharmacare program. MacDiarmid said there were no names attached to the health data, which included personal health numbers, gender, date of birth and postal codes, as well as information from Statistics Canada’s Canadian community health survey. The data did include hospital admissions and discharges, medication history and Medical Services Plan claims. The

Statistics Canada survey included information about patient health status, mental, physical and sexual health, lifestyle information and use of health services. Three separate breaches of ministry privacy policy have been identified so far. None included names, social insurance numbers or financial information, and no evidence has been found that the information was used for anything other than medical research, MacDiarmid said.
An internal ministry and police investigation is ongoing, and the ministry would not disclose the identity of anyone involved. Most of the fired employees and contractors have identified themselves publicly, and at least one has filed a wrongful dismissal lawsuit. MacDiarmid said there were two data breach incidents in June 2012. The first one prompted the letters to be sent. The second was a data stick provided to a ministry contractor

containing similar information on five million individuals, including length of hospital stay and health condition, such as whether they have diabetes. The third case of a data stick shared without permission, password protection or encryption took place in October 2010. It contained diagnostic information on 21,000 people for 262 chronic conditions, including prescription history for certain drugs.

Resolve to be safe in 2013
The BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) has three suggestions for resolutions that can make the world a safer place for you, your family and your community.
• Learn how to give CPR. BCAS attends 2,400 to 2,800 cardiac arrest calls each year. Only 12 per cent of British Columbians who suffer a cardiac arrest survive; the majority of incidents occur at home. “Bystander CPR is critical to patient survival of a sudden cardiac arrest,” says BCAS superintendent Okanagan North Norm Matheson. “We know that bystander CPR saves lives. The more we can encourage everyone to be trained in CPR, the greater the chance of saving lives and ensuring a happy ending to what could be a devastating event.” • Teach children to call 9-1-1. “Teaching your child to call 9-1-1 and to know their home address is one of the most important things you can do to help keep you and your loved ones safe at home,” said Vancouver Island BCAS emergency medical dispatcher Brad Mitchell.
Even very young children can learn to call 9-1-1. Start with the basics when your child is three or four; role-play some simple scenarios and revisit the process every year. • Install proper safety latches on windows. Screens should never be relied on for safety; they are not strong enough to withstand the weight of a child pushing against them. Paramedics see the critical injuries that result from falls from
windows: from broken bones to facial and head trauma. “The best advice for caregivers is to ensure you have the right safe-
ty locks on windows and doors, especially if you have young children,” says BCAS unit chief Marilyn Oberg in Vancouver.

Public Advisory Notice Cariboo Region Lake Aerators
The British Columbia Conservation Foundation (BCCF), under contract to the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, advises that commencing in December lake aerators will be in operation on: • Irish Lake • Skulow Lake • Higgins Lake • Simon Lake The purpose of the lake aeration program is to minimize fish mortality associated with reduced oxygen levels during the winter months on lakes at high risk. During periods of operation, the aerator units will create areas of open water and weak ice. The BCCF would like to remind residents to stay away from safety fencing placed around the aerators. Also, as a reminder to anglers, it is unlawful to fish within 100m of any active aeration unit (see pg. 10, BC Freshwater Fishing Regulations Synopsis). Dr. Neil VanderHorst
Dr. VanderHorst and his family relocated to 100 Mile House in May 2006 shortly after he graduated from Pacific University with his Doctorate of Optometry. Since then he has thoroughly enjoyed the South Cariboo and the friendly people here. He’s happy to be able to fulfill the eye care needs of the community he has come to love.
An eye exam with the optometrist typically includes evaluating visual clarity and ability to focus. The health portion of the examination can detect eye diseases or abnormalities such as glaucoma, macular degeneration or amblyopia (lazy eye).

Minor hockey starts at the Timbits Initiation level for most players and it’s always delightful to watch them scrimmage, as was the case at the Junior B Kamloops Storm/Penticton Lakers KIJHL regular season game in 100 Mile House on Jan. 11. The Timbits players get into such a huge cluster that it’s often hard to see the puck.

Minor Hockey Week is celebrated Jan. 13-19, but with 100 Mile & District Minor Hockey Association, it happens all season long, from September to March, says association president Darrell Blades. Basically, he adds this is why the local association won’t be straying from its regular schedule to acknowledge the special tribute week. Blades notes they have every minute of available ice time booked from now until the end of the season with practices and games, and another coaching clinic to complement courses offered earlier. “We’re making sure
volunteers have the tools to do their jobs and that’s been the focus this year. We’ve had nothing but positive comments and our coaches are looking forward to the next course.” The club is now heading into the busiest part of the season, with the younger divisions starting to concentrate on playing games, rather than practices and scrimmages, which have been the focus. Many of the teams will be heading out of town for games and tournaments and the Novice and Midget divisions each have a home tournament planned. The Initiation division has a fun-day scheduled in February. Blades says the asso-
ciation greatly support Junior B hockey taking root in 100 Mile House through the new 100 Mile House Wranglers club. He adds many of their volunteers were involved with the recent Penticton Lakers versus Kamloops Storm game played at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre. He notes minor hock-

HOW TO PLAY: Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 only once. Each 3x3 box is outlined with a darker line. You already have a few numbers to get you started. Remember: You must not repeat the numbers 1 through 9 in the same line, column or 3x3 box.
AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, you may need someone to light a fire under you this week. Welcome this effort because once you get going you will be able to accomplish anything. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, it may be a challenge to balance work and home life responsibilities this week. Aim for a 60/40 split of requirements.

Brazilian teen loves Cariboo cold
An exchange student from Brazil visited 100 Mile House recently to
enjoy some real Cariboo flavour, from sled dogs and snow to hamburgers
and hockey. Yara Patriota, 15, has been living in Kamloops
for the past six months with Kathy McBride, the daughter of 100 Mile House residents Ken and Susan Fryer. Susan says she and her family escorted Yara to the Cariboo Challenge Sled Dog Race last weekend, which was the teen’s first time to see this northern winter sport. “She was quite taken by the dogs, and really loved the team she got to hug in the pictures [I took].” When Yara returns to Brazil at the end of January, she must write
and submit a paper to her school about her adventures, so the exchange student is excited about including tales about her experiences in the South Cariboo. Yara loves Canada, Susan adds, especially experiencing her first snow and her first hockey game. The teen also tried downhill skiing – her favourite new activity – as well as snowshoeing and other activities. “Her favourite new food is any burger from the A & W.”
