Greyhound has applied to the Passenger Transport Board of B.C. to reduce service on a number of routes in the province. Among them is the Highway 3 trip from Kelowna to Alberta that travels through Cranbrook 10 times a week in each direction. “The reductions in the province are being made because of serious losses across the province,” said Grant

Odsen, regional manager of passenger services for Greyhound Canada in B.C. Currently, the route goes through Cranbrook daily in both directions, and an additional three times a week in each direction. Odsen said they have asked the board to drop the additional three trips a week, while keeping the service running every day through Cranbrook,
the Elk Valley and on to Alberta. “It’s a consistent service, just as we have now,” he said. “This decision allows Greyhound to reduce frequency without abandoning any routes.” Greyhound will continue to run its daily service from Cranbrook to Calgary via Kimberley and Kootenay National Park, so passengers will still have access to a fast-
tracked trip to Alberta’s largest city. Ground transportation in the province is regulated by the Passenger Transport Board of B.C., which provides licenses for bus services like Greyhound to operate. They have minimum trips that must be met. Greyhound must apply to the board for any reductions in service. If the application is granted, they will then have to
provide a certain amount of notice to customers. For Cranbrook, that means notices will start appearing in the terminal 30 days before the trips are eliminated from their schedule. They will also post notifications on their website, www.greyhound.ca. Odsen, who spoke from Calgary, said executives were discussing how the changes will take affect.

Cranbrook is mourning the passage of one of its most beloved citizens — Ruby Sinclair, who died last week at age 95. Sinclair’s love of Cranbrook led her to become one of Cranbrook’s most recognized volunteers, and one of the most well-known and respected people in the community. A story from one of Sinclair’s favourite venues — at a Kootenay Ice hockey game — illustrates the regard in which she was held in Cranbrook. Sinclair was invited to drop the puck at a ceremonial face-off during an Ice playoff game last September. Accompanying her to centre ice was Mayor Wayne Stetski, who invited the crowd to sing “Happy Birthday,” in honour of Sinclair’s nearby 95th birthday. The crowd was happy to serenade the Kootenay Ice’s uber-fan. “Ruby loved this community,” said Karin Penner, Manager of the Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce and longtime friend of Sinclair’s. “Love is more than a relationship between two people, it’s an expression of yourself.”

Sinclair demonstrated her love for community with her actions. There was never a more dedicated volunteer. She never missed a Chamber of Commerce function, Penner said, nor a Fort Steele play opening. “Everybody knew Ruby, and that’s the way she wanted it. She always had a smile for everyone.” Sinclair was born Ruby Heaney in 1917 in Esther, Alberta. She married William McEachern Sinclair, in 1946, and moved to the East Kootenay, first to Elko — where her three children were born — then to Bill’s hometown of Wardner.

St. Mary’s Band fills council seat Annalee Grant
The St. Mary’s Band has the final piece to its council puzzle after Codie Andrew was appointed by acclamation. A nomination meeting was held Jan. 14 at the St. Mary’s Band Hall to nominate members for the band’s by-election. Andrew’s name was put forward by Robert Williams and seconded by Diane Whitehead. With no one challenging Andrew, the nomination stuck to fill up the vacant spot on the St. Mary’s Band Council. Andrew will be sworn in on January 21 at 5 p.m. at the Band Hall. She will join fellow councillors Joe Pierre, Corey Walkley, Marty Williams and chief Jim Whitehead. Congratulations were offered to Andrew following the announcment by members of the St. Mary’s Band on their Facebook page. The by-election was called after outgoing chief Cheryl Casimer stepped down following the original November election for three new councillors.

Two sold-out upcoming shows at the Key City Theatre in Cranbrook reflect the local excitement of returning hometown boy Dean Brody. Brody, who grew up in Jaffray, B.C., is about to launch a cross-Canada tour in support of his album “Dirt,” released in April of last year. Since its release, his career in the country music biz has kicked up a notch. The “Dirt” tour comes through Cranbrook for two shows, Jan. 27 and 28. Brody, who currently resides in Chester, Nova Scotia, said his last cross-Canada trek was about a year and a half ago, with the CMT Hit List Tour. Since then, he’s released his
third album, “Dirt,” which reached number 12 on the Canadian album charts, had a single in the top 40 of Canada’s Hot 100 (“Canadian Girls”), and taken awards for Album of the Year and Male Artist of the Year at the 2012 Canadian Country Music Awards. So one could expect considerable excitement as he sets out on his first tour in a year and a half. “I don’t have a whole lot of expectations,” he said. “I do have myself — I have high expectations of myself and the kind of show we put on. “So as far as the crowd goes, it largely depends on how well I do,” he said with a laugh. Looking for a unique way to get that New Year’s Resolution going? The Mountain Town Maulers have a perfect fitness regime for you: Get Derby Fit! Cranbrook’s roller derby team is offering the course for women who are interested in learning the in and out turns of derby skating, and to get them prepped to join the team. “There’s no butt like a roller derby butt,” the team said in a recent release. The course is not just for skaters, but will provide a great introduction to Flat Track Roller Derby. It can also provide women who just want something a little different with a welcoming, all-woman environment to improve fitness and have some fun. Both beginner and intermediate skaters are welcome to attend. “We will lead you in high energy classes for beginner and intermediate skaters where you will become healthier, physically and mentally, as you learn to skate ‘a la roller derby’ without the pressure of impact or competition,” said the release. The workouts will be two hours each and will start with a dynamic warm-up, then move into on-skate skills and drills, core strength exercises and cool down stretching. “It’s a balanced whole body workout that’s never boring, shows amazing results week after week, and brings you into a welcoming community of women like no other,” the release says. The Maulers will host an info session on January 26 at 12:30 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Elementary gym. The class will begin on February 2 and run until March 9 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. every Saturday. Classes will also take place at the St. Mary’s Elementary gym, 1701 - 5th Street South. It’s a lot of fun playing at home in the East Kootenay.” “Dirt” has received rave reviews in the music press on both sides of the border. And Brody’s bringing a band along with him to bring out the best in it. “I’m really proud of my band,” he said. “They’re some of the best players in Canada — in North America, really. Jason (Barry, for example), who plays guitar for me, is a multiple CCMA Award-winning guitar player. He’s produced records for Terri Clark, he’s played

with Alabama, and all the guys have those kind of resumes. “That’s one of the most exciting parts about the show — I get to listen to my guys, who are some of the best players in North America.” Part of the show will be full-tilt rocking country, and some will aim for a different approach. “We’re going to try a
different approach for part of the show,” Brody said. “We’re going to go unplugged, to give the audience a bit more of an intimate, campfire kind of setting. So the fans can get a closer connection to us.” On the first leg of the tour, Brody will be joined by supporting act Small Town Pistols. Listeners get a sense of the Canadiana in the music and lyrics on “Dirt.” Songs like “Canadian Girls,” “It’s Friday” (with Great Big Sea) or the “Sleeping Bag Song” (written with George Canyon) reflect the small town experience, which most of us who grew up in places like the East Kootenay or south shore Nova Scotia can immediately recognize. But though his songs
are informed by this smalltown experience, Brody’s craft is also in part shaped by Nashville, Tennessee, where he moved in 2004 to pursue his music career, and where he landed a song-writing contract. “I learned a lot when I was in Nashville,” he said. And Brody’s been asked to return. “My producer, Matt Rovey, is an executive for a major record label in the U.S., and he’s talked about it. I’ve recorded albums there, my publishing deal is still in Nashville. “But I just love Canada. My experience going back and forth between the U.S. and Canada has given me a real appreciation for being at home. Some people think I’m crazy
— they’re like ‘Man, if I could make it in the U.S., that would be the ultimate.’ Yeah, it would, but the sacrifice I’d have to make in regards to my family would be too much. “But we probably spend a month, a month and a half there every year, just hanging out with friends, writing songs and recording music. So it’s kind of like a second home to us. “Until you’ve been across the border, and lived in another country, it’s hard to explain to people that Canada’s special, and whenever you’re away from home there’s a little part of you deep down that reminds you that you’re not quite at home. In Canada I don’t have that feeling.”

The family relocated to Cranbrook in 1961, where Ruby worked as school secretary at T.M. Roberts Elementary and then at Laurie Jr. Secondary (now Laurie Middle School). She retired in 1983, and assumed her inimitable career as a volunteer — at Fort Steele Heritage Town, the Key City Theatre, the Cranbrook Visitors’ Booth, the Hospital Auxiliary … She and Bill were both inveterate travellers, and even after Bill’s death in 1990 she indulged in this passion. Sinclair was named Cranbrook’s Woman of the Year by the Canadian Federation of University Women in 2001, and Volunteer of the Year by Volunteer Kootenays in 2008. This week, Volunteer Kootenays issued a statement at the news. “Ruby is a testament to what we promote every day — volunteerism as a vital part of a balanced, healthy lifestyle,” the organization said. “Many local volunteers looked up to her as the matriarch of volunteering — a fabulous role model with a beautiful smile and a sharp wit. “She was honoured in 2008 as our Volunteer of the Year, but she dedicated her entire life to helping others and building community. “Ruby leaves behind a huge legacy of community involvement, and a very big set of shoes

She will be missed.” Sinclair was a dedicated volunteer at the Key City Theatre. “We always looked forward to a visit from Ruby, even when she stopped volunteering,” said Leslie Cupidio of the theatre. “Quite often we would put her in charge of programs and when she had them during a school program where donations were required, everyone always paid. After all,
who could say no to Ruby?” Sinclair’s love of hockey was well documented — for example, she was one of the public faces in Cranbrook’s run in the Kraft Hockeyville contest of 2010. She was the oldest Kootenay Ice season ticket holder. “She was a great community ambassador — her warm personality appealed to everyone,” said Cranbrook City Councillor Gerry Warner. “If you went to an
Ice game and didn’t see Ruby, you felt shortchanged.” Sinclair’s 95th birthday celebration, held in August at the Heritage Inn, was a community gathering in its own right, as wellwishers from all levels of Cranbrook came to pay their respects. A Memorial for Ruby Sinclair will be held Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 10 a.m. at the Alliance Church in Cranbrook.

Holding a political fundraiser out of province has raised some eyebrows, and in fact Premier Christy Clark defended the fundraiser in the Globe and Mail on Wednesday. Clovechok defends it as well, though he says he is a bit surprised at a “little tiny fundraiser turning into a national event”. “This is not an unusual thing as other parties including our provincial NDP raise money in other provinces,” Clovechok said. Clovechok said he wasn’t aware if the NDP had ever held an actual fundraiser out of province, but that it wasn’t that unusual. “RCR owns two resorts in Columbia River - Revelstoke — Kicking Horse and Kimberley — and one in Bill (Bennett)’s riding (Fernie). I am going to Alberta representing the people I hope to represent after the next election, the people of Columbia River - Revelstoke. “We are Alberta friendly, we want Albertans to invest in this area and are open to Albertans doing business here. Columbia River Revelstoke is Alberta friendly, but I will be representing British Columbians, not Albertans.” However, Clovechok says that as second homeowners at many resort communities in this riding, Albertans do pay taxes and contribute to the economy. “I get so many phone calls from Albertans who have bought in this riding who want to know where their tax dollars are going. They can’t vote, but my office will be open to them. “Currently I’ve been told by countless Alber-
tans that they have tried to write to Norm Macdonald (NDP MLA) with questions and have received little support.”

spending less money than any other winning campaign. That speaks to a whole lot of people — from Kimberley to Revelstoke and across this riding — putting their time and effort into the political process and I am very proud of that. “It roots you in doing what is best for all people as a whole rather than a vested interest.” Macdonald also says he does hear from Albertans. “What Mr. Clovechok is asserting is wrong. We do a good job responding to anything that comes to us. “But I represent the people of Columbia River - Revelstoke. The idea of holding a fundraiser in another province brings up questions. Who are you beholden to? “We do hear from Albertans and they complain about gas prices which have increased dramatically because of BC Liberal policy. “They complain about the HST, which was official BC Liberal policy. “They complain about second home purchases being impacted by the HST, which until recently were flatlined because of BC Liberal policy. “These complaints go directly to very controversial BC Liberal policies.” Clovechok said that the timing of the fundraiser was opportune as both Coleman and Bennett had other business in Calgary at the same time.
“We’re currently meeting to see what the timelines will be,” he said. Odsen said the company is committed to offering services in B.C., and with the new changes they can expand their offerings elsewhere to better suit customers. “We want to stay in the province,” he said. With the reduction of services comes the expansion of others. Odsen said they are looking forward to launching their popular Grey-
hound Express services in B.C. in the late spring, following its success in Alberta. That service will offer customers a more comfortable bus experience with expanded leg room and modern amenities like Wifi. It will operate between B.C.’s major hubs like the Kelowna to Vancouver route. While it won’t hit Cranbrook directly, Odsen said passengers connecting in Kelowna may get a chance to ride the new updated buses once they become available.

Community rallies around Cranbrook family Annalee Gr ant Townsman Staff
A young Cranbrook family is facing a long road to recovery after a mysterious illness struck a father of two on November 27, 2012. Randy Byman was returning from his job in Elkford to Cranbrook when he was suddenly hit by an unknown illness. “He became very ill and it was a downhill spiral from there,” said his wife, Deanna. It continued for five weeks, with his health deteriorating. Randy was sent to a specialist in hopes of finding a diagnosis – and they got one. “The doctors didn’t know what they were dealing with until a trip to Calgary to see a neurologist on December 28 gave us the diagnosis of mononeuritis multiplex with an associated vasculitis,” Deanna said. As the family struggled with the realization that they would be battling the disorder for at least a year before Randy was back to his

Family friend Sara Jerke launched a Facebook page and an online auction, which will open bids this Sunday, January 20. Many businesses and local artisans have stepped up to offer items for bidding, with all proceeds going to the Bymans. Sara herself, who operates Sara’s
Kitchen, has offered up some goodies for the auction. “Sara had the idea for this auction and has totally just taken the ball and run with it,” Deanna said. “She is an amazing friend and a wonderful support system to us.” So far the donated auction items have totalled over $3,000. They range from gift certifi-
cates from local auto dealers for service, to handmade bracelets, goodies from the many talented homegrown bakeries in town, and gift certificates to restaurants. Deanna’s two children even picked out a special auction item from her Scentsy collection. The disorder has caused Randy to have

It took 15 years of consultations before the Columbia River Treaty was signed by Canadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker and U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower on January 17, 1961. The important treaty turned 52 years old on January 17. The Columbia River Treaty is an international agreement between Canada and the U.S. to develop, regulate and manage the Columbia River on both sides of the border in order to control flooding and optimize electrical energy production. The treaty itself has no expiry date, but after 60 years either side can terminate it or ask for changes, which will happen in September 2024. The deadline for any requests for changes is 10 years before the minimum length of the treaty, which falls in 2014. Before the treaty was signed after WWII, the mighty Columbia River was often spilling its banks as the population in the basin increased. Both sides of the border also saw an economic upswing, and energy needs were increasing. And so began 15 years of deliberations and investigations by the International Joint Commission to develop a plan. The treaty was finally signed by Diefenbaker and Eisenhower on January 17, 1961. It was later rati-

Randy’s life has changed significantly since the diagnosis. “He has extensive nerve damage and struggles with the ability to do even the basic stuff – eating, showering, reading a book. He cannot drive,” Deanna said. The family is still reeling as they adjust to their new life. Randy gave up his apartment in Elkford recently where he stayed when he was away working. The family is now focusing on his recovery, which is expected to take 18 to 24 months. “We have no idea what the future holds but we are taking it day by day,” Deanna said. “He has been hospitalized twice and is under-
going extensive treatment with chemotherapy drugs and steroids.” The Bymans are backed not only by the community, but by the health care team at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. “We don’t know the ‘why?’ part of all of this, but tests are being done and he is under the care of an amazing specialist here in Cranbrook, Dr. Karen Pont,” Deanna said. Randy also sees a neurologist, who was able to estimate his recovery time. Nerves are capable of regeneration, the family has been informed, but it happens slowly. “Nerves can regenerate but at a very slow pace – approximately a half to one inch per month; however, there
are no guarantees,” Deanna said. Randy suddenly went from being an otherwise healthy man to being on 16 pills a day to control the disorder and the excruciating pain he has experienced. “He went from zero meds to about 16 per day. It has been very difficult to say the least,” Deanna said. The family is determined to see Randy return to full health and to return to normal function. City of Kimberley PUBLIC NOTICE Call for Expressions of Interest for the Kimberley Tourism Infrastructure Advisory Committee From now until January 30, 2013 the City of Kimberley is accepting expressions of interest from prospective members of the Kimberley Tourism Infrastructure Advisory Committee (TIAC). Kimberley is a BC Resort Municipality and receives provincial funding to enhance its tourism economy. The TIAC will be a non-statutory group made up of 11 members providing the City of Kimberley with advice and recommendations with respect to investments in tourism infrastructure. Initially, appointments will be for a mix of one and two year terms. In future years the terms will be for two years. The Committee shall meet biannually, or as frequently as required. Participation will not be financially remunerated. The treaty meant that the countries could now control the catastrophic flooding by installing three dams in Canada: the Hugh Keenleyside, Duncan and Mica, and the Libby Dam in Montana, creating the Koocanusa Reservoir which is enjoyed mightily by vacationers and locals alike. The U.S. also paid Canada $64.4 million, which at the time
was calculated to be half the worth of the flood protection the country would enjoy over the treaty’s 60-year life, according to the Canadian Encyclopedia. sraeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was once seen as a right-wing figure. Now he’s widely considered to be a moderate. But it’s not Netanyahu who has changed; Israel has. His governing coalition will certainly win the largest number of seats in the Knesset (parliament) again in the election on 22 January, but his new government will contain lots of people who make him look very moderate indeed. Consider, for example, Moshe Feiglin, one of the ultra-right-wingers who recently displaced the remaining moderates in internal elections in Netanyahu’s own Likud Party. “You can’t teach a monkey to speak and you can’t teach an Arab to be democratic,” Feiglin told the New York Times recently. “You’re dealing with a culture of thieves and robbers....The Arab destroys everything he touches.” Last October, when Likud merged with its hard-right coalition partner, Yisrael Beitenu (Israel Our Home), it was hailed as Netanyahu’s political masterstroke. Opinion polls predicted that the new alliance would win 47 seats in the new Knesset, compared to the 42 seats they won separately in the last election. But even with Likud-Beitenu’s lurch to the right, it’s still not right-wing enough for many Israeli voters. Just in the past month, a new party that is even farther to the right, Bayit Yehudi (Jewish Home), has surged in the polls, and now Netanyahu’s alliance is predicted to drop to only 34 seats, while the upstart party gets 15. And what is Bayit Yehudi’s leader like? Naftali Bennett is the 40-year-old son of American immigrants to Israel, a religiously observant man who made a small fortune in software development before
going into politics. And he has no intention of wasting his time “babbling about Israel and the Palestinians.” His solution to the problem is for Israel to annex about 60 percent of the West Bank, including almost all the land occupied by Jewish settlers, and to rule the rest forever. “There is not going to be a Palestinian state within the tiny land of Israel,” he said in an interview with The Guardian. “It’s just not going to happen. A Palestinian Gwynne state would be a disaster for the next 200 years.” So Dyer in the 40 per cent of the West Bank left to them, in Bennett’s version of the future, 2.5 million Palestinians would live under some kind of “autonomous” authority, permanently supervised by the Israeli intelligence services. Most of the issues being debated in this Israeli election are domestic questions about the economy and the social welfare net, as in any other country, but there is no doubt that the rise of the right has been fuelled primarily by its hard line on security and territory. What needs to be explained is why so many more Israelis are attracted by those policies nowadays than they were twenty years ago. The founding generation of Zionists in Israel in 1948 were mostly secular and socialist, and most of them voted for the Labour Party, which dominated Israeli politics until the 1980s. But the Israel of 1948 contained only two-thirds of a million Jews. Today’s Israel has six million Jews, and most of them are neither secular nor socialist in their outlook. Nor, in most cases, are they descended from that founding generation. The early post-independence waves of immigrants were mostly “oriental” Jews, primarily refugees from Arab countries,
who were religious and conservative in their outlook. They were numerous, and had much higher birth-rates than secular Jews. Then, from the 1980s onwards, came the Russians and other post-Soviet Jews, who had no sympathy at all for socialism. Together, they have transformed Israeli politics. About 50 per cent of Israeli Jews now identify themselves as traditional, religious or ultra-Orthodox. Only 15 per cent describe themselves as secular. And both the religious and the post-Soviet Jews are mostly on the right politically – in the case of the ultra-Orthodox, 79 per cent of them, compared to only 17 per cent of secular Jews. The new Israel is capitalist, religious and, in many cases, ultra-nationalist. Did the “peace process” die because Israelis were becoming more right-wing, or did the failure of the peace process push Israelis to the right? That may sound like a chicken-and-egg question, but in fact Israel was already moving right for demographic reasons at least a decade before the peace process began. By now it has traveled a long way in that direction. Together, Netanyahu’s Likud Beitenu alliance and Bennett’s Bayit Yehudi will win around 50 seats in this election, which puts them within easy range of a majority in the 120-seat Knesset. Just bring in a couple of the minor parties (some of which are also quite far over on the right), and they will have a strong right-wing coalition. Netanyahu will still be prime minister, but he will have to bring Naftali Bennet and other hard-right leaders into the cabinet. And then life in the Middle East will get even more interesting than it is already. Gwynne Dyer is a London-based independent journalist.

ranbrook has a Mount Baker. So does the State of Washington. In fact, so does Uganda. All three are named for relatives of the same family, of whom our own town founder James Baker is a member. There is a Baker’s Falls in Sri Lanka and the seventh-largest lake of Africa is Lake Albert and if you think that is beside the point, it’s not. In creating the town of Cranbrook and thereby, according to some, denying nearby Fort Steele the opportunity to become the district railway centre, James Baker has been both lauded and vilified, depending from which side of the political and real estate fence the voices came. He was a soldier, a scholar, a politician, a rancher, a scion of the landed gentry – in short, the quintessential English squire. James Baker is a singularly interesting individual as were many of his family. Collectively, he and his relations, especially his brothers, create a fascinating tale rarely found outside of fiction, a saga of love and war, glory and sacrifice, wealth and scandal, a tale of derring-do of the highest level. To understand the brothers is to more clearly understand James and to therefore more clearly understand the roots of our community. We look first at Samuel White Baker Jr., the second-eldest of the four Baker boys, sons of Samuel Baker Sr., a wealthy Englishman whose investments in the sugar industry on the islands of Jamaica and Mauritius ensured that his heirs would want for neither money nor prestige. Samuel White Baker, born June 8, 1821, in London, was an adventurous, clever and jovial lad. Handsome, not too tall, square-shouldered and barrel-chested with curly auburn hair, he was raised in a life of ease to become every bit the sporting English gentleman. His somewhat haphazard schooling in England and Ger-
many eventually brought him a degree as a civil engineer in 1841, following which he spent some time designing railways in Romania. His true passion was, and always would remain, hunting – big-game hunting if possible – for which he designed a twenty-one pound, muzzle-loading rifle capable of blasting large things into much smaller things. In 1843, he married Henrietta Martin, daughter of an English rector, in a double wedding in which Sam’s eldest brother John married Henrietta’s sister, Eliza. In due time both couples sailed to Mauritius to oversee the family plantation. Sam and Henrietta had seven children over the ensuing years, of which both sons and one daughter would die young. In 1847 Sam moved his family to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) to create an English settlement at the remote Nuwara Eliya, a mountain health resort where, joined by brothers John and Valentine, his brewery, crops and livestock eventually began to pay dividends. It was seven years later when he and his family returned to England, all suffering poor health from the effects of their extended stay in the tropics. Henrietta died of typhus in 1855, leaving Sam with four children whom - declaring himself incapable and the girls in need of a woman’s touch he turned over to his sister Mary (Min) to raise. He fell into a funk and began a period of idle wandering, travelling to the Crimea to visit his brothers James and Valentine as they fought in the cavalry against the Russians during the Crimean War. Although fearless by nature, Sam was not inclined towards soldiering and journeyed onward to Romania, overseeing the construction of a railway from the Danube to the Black Sea. He even considered joining David Livingstone’s expedition to Africa but was refused on the grounds that he “lacked a useful occupation”. It was in 1859, during a visit to the Bulgarian City of Vidin on a hunting expedition to central Europe with Maharajah Duleep Singh, that Sam’s life took a most dramatic turn. Avalanche ready for Mariners TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
Volleyball action will take over the gym at the College of the Rockies gym this weekend as the Avalanche host the visiting Vancouver Island University Mariners. The two teams have clashed before, when the Avs travelled down to the Island in their final road trip of the fall semester. The Mariners swept both the men’s and women’s Avalanche teams, with the men winning one set in their first game. Both teams are hoping home court advantage gives them an edge. “It’s no fun to play in their gym, it’s kind of an odd place to play but I think it’ll be a lot different with home court advantage,” said Kellan Ward, who plays libero for the men’s team. Rebecca Zemlak, who plays middle with the women’s squad, agreed, noting that her team will be fresh, while the opponents will have to deal with the effects of a 15-hour bus ride. “We’re well rested and those teams that come here, they’re not used to having those
long bus rides,” Zemlak said. “That’s a big advantage for us, is they’re tired and they’re out of their element.” Ward points to an unusual court that threw his team off when the men were playing at VIU in November, especially when it came to deploying the serve as a weapon. “Their house is very wide and very weird to play in, there’s not a lot of bearing, so they served us quite well, whereas in our home, we serve quite well,” said Ward. “I think we have a good chance of hurting them in that regard.” In addition to good serving, Ward notes other parts of the men’s game against the Mariners is important. “Just shutting down the middle attack,” Ward continued. “They have a pretty good middle there—Lee Hamilton— he’s pretty big, pretty established in the middle, so we’ll find strategies to shut him down and minimize his success.” The women, coming off two losses last weekend, are hoping to take a few lessons learned to
heart against their opponents. “Just being consistent and coming out with that fire and all of us being on the same page,” said Zemlak, “and having that will, motivation and desire to win. We’ve done a lot of mental prep this week, so I think that’ll be beneficial going into this weekend.” The ladies have worked hard in practice
over the last week and remember a few things from their last meeting on the Island as well. “Just play to their weaknesses, so being strategic and having a strong offence will be really good for us, as well as keeping up a solid block,” continued Zemlak. “We have our two outside hitters—Kelsey and Andy—they’re really huge for our team so
we want to use them, but we also want to switch it up by using our middle and all of our offence, so VIU doesn’t know who’s going to be attacking.” The women kick off competition at the College of the Rockies on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m. Action on Saturday starts at 1 p.m. followed by the men two hours later.

The Mount Baker Wild junior basketball team returned with a second place finish at a tournament in Penticton this past weekend, falling to the top-ranked team in the province in the finals. The team cruised through competition from Merritt, South Kamloops Secondary and Kelowna Secondary School to make it to the final game, where they faced W.J. Mouat Secondary out of Abbots-
ford. The Wild held a 12point lead in the first quarter, but lost it and faced a two-point deficit by the half. The Hawks drained a trio of three-pointers in the third quarter and had a 16-point lead against the Wild. However, the Baker girls fought back and came within six points of catching up, before the final buzzer sounded, with a 53-39 score in favour of W.J. Mouat. Even in victory, the Hawks coach praised
the Baker girls, saying they were the toughest team his squad has faced all year. The Hawks still retain their number-one ranking in the province, but the Wild aren’t far behind, with a fifthplace provincial ranking. Ray-Lyn Pighin was the top scorer against Merritt, South Kamloops Secondary and W.J. Mouat, while Bobbi-Jo Colburn took the honour against the Kelowna Secondary School.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Home sweet home. Sure works for the Patriots in the AFC title game. New England gets a chance to extend its mastery in the final step to the Super Bowl on Sunday against Baltimore, the team the Patriots beat a year ago for the conference crown. That win made them 4-0 in home conference title games. Although they were more vulnerable at home than usual during the 2012 regular season, losing to Arizona and San Francisco and having tight games with Buffalo and the Jets, the Patriots (13-4) are happy not to be heading to Baltimore (12-6) this weekend. Or anywhere else. “Everything is on
deck,” Patriots Pro Bowl defensive tackle Vince Wilfork said. “You have to put everything you have into this game. If you lose you go home, plain and simple.” But the Patriots are at home, where they’ve been beaten in early-round games, including against the Ravens 33-14 three years ago. At this stage,
though, no way. That success rate for the AFC championship doesn’t fool Wilfork into feeling complacent. Just the opposite. “This team always plays us tough,” Wilfork added. “This team has been in the playoffs on the road and won a lot of games. They won here in the playoffs. We have to be able to pre-
pare well and execute very well at a high level. I don’t think we can (leave) no stone unturned in this game, because if we do it could cost us.” The Patriots are one of the NFL’s best home teams, going 73-15 since Gillette Stadium opened in 2002, including 10-2 in the post-season. Many of

Temptation of NHL hockey too strong to resist They say there is a sucker born every minute, and I am one of them. Why, do you ask? Well, when the Canucks get set to drop the puck against the Ducks on Saturday night, I’ll be in front of a TV cheering them on. During the labour dispute, I swore that once a deal was made and a new season began, I would turn my back on the NHL, just like it turned it’s back on their fans when the lockout began in September. However, I am weak.
My hockey cravings have been sated by keeping tabs on the Kootenay Ice and the Kimberley Dynamiters, but I’ve missed the feeling of being let down by my Canucks. I’m a sucker for abuse. I was destined to be a fan of Vancouver’s NHL team, as I was born in the Lower Mainland and grew up watching guys like the Russian Rocket and Captain Canuck lead the team to oh so close to Lord Stanley’s cup in 1994. With the same fer-
vour, I sat on the edge of my seat in the spring of 2011, when the Canucks again made a run to the final round of the playoffs, which ended with an agonizing loss in Game Seven to the Boston Bruins. I was choked about the lockout 2004, just like everyone else, but it seemed as if the latest dispute really struck a nerve with the fan base across the league. After the last CBA was signed in the summer of 2005, NHL revenues have done nothing but up at a compound
annual growth rate of 6.35 per cent. In 2011/2012, the NHL raked in $3.28 billion. That’s billion, with a B.

Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My parents have been divorced for 30 years. Both made mistakes when they were married, but the end was due to my mom’s drinking. Dad provided for me and now takes an active role in his grandchildren’s lives, always making an effort to show up for their events. Mom is a different story. She is an alcoholic. When I was younger, she constantly criticized me. I was never “good enough.” She demeans my housekeeping skills, my parenting and my appearance. Mom also has become increasingly negative about my father. She has something bad to say about him every time I speak to her. She blames Dad for the way her life turned out. I have a hard time trusting her with my children. I attempted to make regular visiting arrangements when the kids were younger, but she would never commit to a specific schedule. Now she rarely sees them because making the time isn’t a priority. Over the years, I have gone to counseling, and I have created a good life for myself. I have suggested counseling to Mom, but she refuses to get help for any of her various issues. I’ve also suggested talking to other family members, although she’s estranged from most of them. I really am at the end of my rope. The few visits she makes are stressful and anxiety filled. I have already limited contact to when I am prepared to handle her, and frankly, I don’t want to bother anymore. But I hate the idea of hurting her. She is still my mother. How can I deal with her negativity? -- Tired Daughter Dear Tired: We understand that Mom’s visits are exhausting, and you are right to limit them. Now you need to create boundaries for her behavior. If she speaks negatively, say, “I don’t wish to discuss this.” If she keeps at it, you can leave or ask her to leave. It might change her behavior, but if not, at least you won’t be there to listen to it. We also urge you to contact Adult Children of Alcoholics (adultchildren.org) for additional support. Dear Annie: A few days ago, I attended the wake of a good friend of 40 years. She was in her mid-50s and died unexpectedly. She left a 12-year-old daughter. As we arrived at the funeral home, we thought there was a line to sign in. Wrong. It turned out to be about 25 “tweens” practicing their cheerleading. These girls blocked the front door and the hallway. They were loud, laughing, taking pictures and running around. This continued all night long. Not one person said a word to them. I don’t know whose job it should have been to tell them to sit down and be quiet, but I feel I didn’t get the chance to properly mourn my friend. There was no funeral service. Should I have talked to these girls or someone else? -- Still Grieving Dear Still: Someone at the funeral home should have taken charge of this circus and asked the girls to be more respectful, and you could have spoken to the funeral director. But we hope it was comforting to the 12-year-old to see her friends there, even if they were laughing and taking pictures. It’s a blessing not to know death at that age. Dear Annie: “Realistic” referred to the decline of the elderly as “the angry human wreckage they become.” That statement is a sad commentary. Most elderly do not take such a negative route in their final days. My grandmothers were both sweet, vulnerable and a little bit scared in the end, but neither hostile nor combative. This may have been because they were surrounded by people who truly loved and supported them during that vulnerable time. The difference between power and violence
T
here is a remarkable coincidence of events this coming Monday in the U.S. First of all, it’s a federal holiday celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent action in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. A Baptist preacher, King proclaimed that people needed to stand up for an end to racial discrimination and to do so in a nonviolent way. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. The citation accompanying the award acknowledged that he was the “first person in the Western world to have shown us that a struggle can be waged without violence.” Secondly, it’s also the day when President Obama will celebrate his second inauguration. In a very real sense, Obama as the first African American President is a visible symbol of the legacy of King and the civil rights movement. Thirdly, this year marks the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation during the Civil War between the northern and southern states, and decreed “that all persons held as slaves” within the Southern states “are, and henceforward shall be free.” I was reflecting on this sequence of events coming together, particularly in the wake of one of the worst mass shootings in the history of the U.S., the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. Martin Luther King Jr. understood that violence does not equal power. Our neighbours to the south are grappling now with the question of gun violence and gun control. We dare not think that we are immune; the same kind of violence is growing in Canada as well. I found the response made by the gun lobby in the U.S. and those who are strongly in favour of maintaining the status quo to be quite shocking, almost beyond belief. In the week following the shooting at Sandy Hook, gun sales
soared dramatically because people were afraid that new restrictions on gun ownership would be put in place. Advocates of the right of people to own guns started flooding the airwaves proclaiming loudly that it’s not guns who kill people; people kill people, they say. They’re wrong. It’s people with guns who kill people. The NRA continues to shout that it is a fundamental right for citizens to be able to purchase assault weapons. The other thing I couldn’t believe is that

areas around schools to keep them safe. Both in the U.S. and in Canada, weapons are becoming an idol for many. There is a growing cycle of violence in which people respond more and more quickly to each other with violence. But Martin Luther King reminded us that violence is not power. As someone (I forget where I read this) put it, “A gun may kill a person, but it cannot kill the spirit. It cannot kill an idea. Its ability to effect long–term change is negligible. A gun can-
not protect us from tyranny, especially when we are facing the tyranny of fear.” We honour Martin Luther King, Jr. because of his commitment to nonviolence and for his ability to articulate a dream of justice and equality, not just in the U.S., but across the globe. He sought to bring out the best in people and in his nation. He said: “With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.” He taught that soul
force was more powerful than physical force. He believed strongly that only nonviolent means could bring nonviolent ends. His movement faced extreme and relentless violence. People in the civil rights movement were shot and bombed; he himself was assassinated. That level of violence, however, wasn’t able to stop the movement towards more equal rights. “The arc of the moral universe is long,” King said, “but it bends toward justice.” On the night before
he was brutally gunned down on a Memphis hotel balcony at the age of 39, he said, “I’ve been to the mountaintop and I have looked over and I have seen the promised land and we as a people will get to the promised land.” I pray that we will seize this moment as another opportunity to renounce violence, to restrict access to assault weapons, and to make a new commitment to power through nonviolence. Movie theatre, site of massacre, reopens in Colorado A S S O C I AT E D P R E S S
AURORA, Colo. — The Colorado movie theatre where a gunman killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others reopens Thursday with a private ceremony for victims, first responders and officials — an event boycotted as insensitive by some of those who lost loved ones in the massacre. Theatre owner Cinemark plans to temporarily reopen the entire 16-screen complex in Aurora to the public on Friday, then permanently on Jan. 25. Aurora’s mayor, Steve Hogan, has said residents overwhelmingly support reclaiming what
he calls “an important venue for Aurora.’’ Former neurology student James Holmes is charged with 166 felony counts, mostly murder and attempted murder, in the July 20 massacre at a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises.’’ Holmes has until March to enter a plea. Details about Thursday’s ceremony — which was to include the showing of an undisclosed movie — were a closely guarded secret. Cinemark, of Plano, Texas, refused to comment on the remembrance, refurbishments to the theatre, or security measures. Victims and invited officials also re-
fused to comment. Victims have filed at least three federal lawsuits against Cinemark alleging it should have provided security for the midnight “Dark Knight’’ premier and that an exit door used by the gunman to get his weapons and re-enter should have had an alarm. In court papers, Cinemark says the tragedy was “unforeseeable and random.’’ Those invited to attend included victims, families, first responders, Hogan and Gov. John Hickenlooper. Some victims said it’s important to reclaim the theatre. Others called its reopening insensitive and refused an
invitation to attend Thursday’s event. “The community wants the theatre back and by God, it’s back,’’ said Tom Sullivan, whose son, Alex Sullivan, 27, was killed. “Nobody is going to stop us from living our lives the way that we lived our lives before.’’ Michael White Sr.’s son, Michael Jr., suffered a punctured lung and a broken rib and shoulder blade. He ultimately decided to stay away from the cinema. “With me, it’s like going to a cemetery and walking across somebody’s grave,’’ the older White said. “I think it’s disrespectful to do that.’’

Anna was born on June 22, 1923 in Lethbridge, Alberta. She was a stay at home mom and enjoyed time with her family and friends and baking. She will be forever remembered as a kind and caring lady. Anna is survived by her siblings Jim (Elsie), Connie, Lil and Ken (Bernice); her children Clarence (Rina), Marion (Jim), Martha (Syd), Irene (Elgin), Dave (Tracy) and Mark (Tannis); as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Wayne and two husbands. A memorial service for Anna will be held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 1:30 pm. Gone on before Mae were her parents John Harlow and Mae Scott, step-father John Scott, son-in-law Don, and grandson Sean. In 1951, while working at Fabro’s, Mae met and married Frank, settling into raise her family. During this time mom was active with many things, including being secretary for the Senior Citizen Association, president and secretary for the East Kootenay Vintage Car Club bowling and PTA. Mae also enjoyed swimming, knitting and sewing. Family was important to Mae and she enjoyed the growth as her children married, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren came along to share in her life. Ten Reasons to Advertise on a Newspaper Website 1. Frequency: The online newspaper Web site user accesses the Internet almost twice as much as the general user. 2. Credibility: The credibility of the newspaper brand
extends to the advertiser. Fifty-nine percent of Web users agree that online advertising is more believable from a trusted Web site. Online, newspaper Web sites are the dominant local media site in most markets.
3. Targeted: If you want to focus on a particular backyard, advertising in an online newspaper is more personal, and more relevant because it is local. Newspapers also publish a plethora of niche sites (youth, women, movie fans, seniors, are illustrative) for virtually any demographic advertisers could possibly hope to reach. 4. Purchasing power: Sixty-two percent of newspaper
Web site users purchase online compared with 49 percent of general users. Thirty-nine percent of online newspaper users have incomes higher than $75,000; 65 percent own their homes. Reinforcement: Seventy-six percent of online newspaper users also read the newspaper in the past seven days, and repetition increases awareness. The Internet Advertising Bureau found that, by increasing the number of online banners from one to two per week, branding results on three key metrics increased 42 percent making online a great, inexpensive way to increase the branding lift of traditional campaigns. 9. Quality: Seventy-five percent of advertisers generally said newspaper Web sites’ advertising was as good or better than other Internet sites.
10. Mix: A variety of recent studies have demonstrated the power of online, when included in a mix with traditional media, to elaborate the brand message. Anxiety interferes with relationship Dear Wendy: I met this man in October and I was wondering if you could do one of your “specs” on him for me. I came to see you several times but I have moved to another town. Christmas is coming and he wants me to meet his parents. I find that he is rushing the relationship that we have. Could I be paranoid and wrong that he is hiding something from me? Feeling Paranoid Dear Feeling Paranoid: We don’t feel this man is hiding anything from you. However, it’s like you said: he is always in a rush when it comes to your relationship. If you notice, he is always in a rush no matter what he does. We feel he suffers from anxiety disorder. Picking up on the vibrations of his first and last name, we feel that he has genetic anxiety disorder stemming from the mother’s side of the family. We feel we know you and you are such a laidback person that this type of energy may

I asked my guides if we could do a “spec” on your boyfriend and this is what we have discovered: He is not an alcoholic and he does not take drugs. He is not a verbal abuser but he can and does have a tendency to have his little temper tantrums. The reason he gets into these states is because he becomes overwhelmed with what is happening around him. If you notice, he will have a hard time emotionally if he has a heavy work load, or there is a lot of clutter around him or if he can’t accomplish what he wants to in the time he wants to do it. He will appear to be angry but he is not angry at all just overwhelmed in what he feels he needs and has to do. He will not ask for help but he will appreci-
