Kootenay Regional Workforce Table Chair, David Ridge of Fairmont Ridge Construction says, “This is a very important initiative for meeting the skilled labour shortages throughout the region over the next 10 or more years. We will be holding focus group sessions in both the East and the West Kootenays to provide an opportunity for industry and community stakeholders to give input on labour force needs, training challenges and projected labour demands specific to the region.” Supported by Columbia Basin Trust, focus
groups will be taking place in a variety of East and West Kootenay locations in February and March. These groups will allow business and industries in the Kootenays to voice their concerns about labour force shortages and to provide any input or suggestions they may have. Though locations are not yet confirmed, focus groups will be held in the following subregions: (East) Elk Valley, Columbia Valley, Cranbrook/Kimberley, Creston Valley, (West) Boundary/Grand Forks, Trail/Castlegar, Slocan/Nakusp, Kootenay Lake/Nelson.
Chair, David Ridge indicated, “These focus groups will be an important way for us to ensure wide representation across the region and that all industry and community voices are heard. The Table will be facilitating the research, focus groups, and development of the Regional Skills Training Plan.” To learn more about the Kootenay Regional Workforce Table, contact the Secretariat Manager, Leah Bradish at 250-489-8286, or by email lbradish@cotr. bc.ca

Building a place to store your wine Building a wine cellar isn’t as complicated as you might think, whether it’s simply a way to make use of some wasted space under the basement stairs or a remodelling of the children’s old playroom. The first step is to choose a location where you can maintain a steady temperature between 11 and 14°C. To ensure the optimal ageing of your wine, the humidity rate should be kept between 60 and 80 percent. A good wine cellar compressor guarantees low energy consumption and will be able to regulate
all these details. Wine has to be stored in the dark as it is sensitive to light. Consequently, you should plan to use a windowless room with a ceiling light and switch. The most efficient storage method is to use individual bottle racks, where the label for each bottle is visible and where your wine will be easily accessible. Piling the bottles one on top of the other means moving them every time you come to choose a wine, and you will also risk disturbing the contents. Plan to use building materials resistant to humidity, such as waterproof gypsum, which is specially designed to resist mold. To safeguard the delicate flavour of your wine, the raw materials you choose for the racks and wall coverings should be free of odours, which can filter through the corks and into your prize vintages. The floor can be covered in ceramic, marble, or stone, all materials that have proven their worth in humid conditions. If undertaking a wine cellar remodel is a bit beyond your skill and budget, or if you like to keep things simple, another option is to buy an electric wine cellar that will be able to pamper your wine, hassle free.

FORD (BC) LTD
The 2012 Jetta is at home on A family vehicle that shines the highway or in your city with luxury and efficiency
PHOTO SUBMITTED
The 2013 Jetta combines European styling with handling good enough for the race track. Overall: As far as fourdoor sedans with German badges on them, it doesn’t get any less expensive than Jetta; challenging Toyota and Honda on their own turf. Drivetrain: The 115-horsepower four-cylinder engine helps keep Jetta ownership affordable; a 2.5-litre five-cylinder, 2.0-litre turbo-diesel and 200-horse turbo-four-cylinder gas engine return; allnew hybrid features some unique powerplant technology. Two years ago, pundits got all up in Volkswagen’s grille about the perceived “dumbing down” of the sixth-generation Jetta. Those prognosticators are now dining on heaping helpings of crow as the Jetta has become VeeDubs hot seller. Dropping the price to make it competitive with other compact se-
dans helped, but a spacious interior and great handling was and still is a strong selling point. The priceleader Jetta functions with a 115-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that gets reasonable fuel economy. The 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder gas engine also returns as an option, but for serious fuel thriftiness opt for the 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel (called the TDI) rated at 6.7 l/100 km in the city and 4.6 l/100 km on the highway. The performance-minded Jetta GLI returns with its 200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder and tracktuned suspension, big wheels and sticky tires. The big news on the 2013 engine front is the launch of the Jetta Hybrid that uses a turbocharged 150-horsepower 1.4-litre four-cylinder gas
engine in combination with a 27-horsepower electric motor for 170 net horses. The Hybrid’s torque flows through a seven-speed DSG. and it can reportedly run for up to 1.9 kilometres on electricity alone at speeds up to 70 km-h, reach 60-mph (96 km-h) from rest in less than nine seconds. There’s no report on expected fuel performance as of this writing. VW is on record as stating the company expects that hybrids will constitute three per cent of its total production by 2018, which means that the Passat, CC and upcoming 2014 Golf hatchback are likely candidates for this form of propulsion. Meanwhile, the smaller Jetta SportWagen that’s based on the older Golf platform basically carries over for 2013.
The Kia Sorento is stylish, fuel-efficient and with room for the whole family. Overall: The only way to get seating for up to seven people in the Kia line also has an available V6 and offroad capability. Drivetrain: Two four-cylinder engines and an available V6; all-wheel-drive is an option. The Sorento remains a stylish, comfortable machine that takes its highway-cruising role seriously, regardless of weather or road status. The 2013 edition, available in front- or all-wheel-drive, also offers a split-folding third-row-seating option for folks needing to transport up to seven passengers. Buyers can choose between a base 175-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a
191-horsepower direct-fuelinjection version of the 2.4 and a 276-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. All three are closely matched in terms of fuel performance, although the direct-injection four-cylinder does hit 9.5 l/100 km on highway. Ultimately, your final choice will likely boil down to affordability and the amount of grunt you require. A six-speed automatic is the sole transmission available, while all-wheel-drive is available with any engine. Standard LX features — four-cylinder and V6 in front-wheel-drive only — include air conditioning, tilt and telescopic steering column and steering-wheel-located audio controls. The EX

means you get all-wheeldrive, bigger wheels, leather seats, dual-zone climate control and pushbutton start. The EX V6 Luxury adds panoramic sunroof, navigation with rear-view camera and a power passenger seat. The top model is the SX, which is what it will take for you to get the third-row seat. The only other model where it can be added is the EX V6 Luxury as an extra-cost option.

In Memoriam Thomas Montgomery Worobec (Monty) March 31, 1944-Jan. 23, 1982
There will always be a heartache, And often a silent tear. But always the precious memory, Of the days when you were here. My life goes on without you, But nothing seems the same. I hold you close within my heart, And there you will remain. To walk with me throughout my life, Until we meet again. Remembering you is easy, I do it every day. But missing you is a heartache That never goes away. Lovingly remembered and sadly missed by Mom, Wendy and family

Auto Services
Cranbrook Dodge is pleased to commence 2013 with the continued addition of Norm Zulps in the position of Service Manager for their full-line Dodge, Chrysler, Ram & Jeep dealership. He joined the team in May of 2012, and has been an integral part of continuing to build on our valued reputation within the community. Norm grew up in North Vancouver, and has always had a keen interest in cars, motorcycles and woodworking. His dealership experience began with Regency Chrysler in 1988, where he progressed from Service Advisor to Tower Operator to Service Manager. In 1995 he and his wife moved to Kelowna as they started their family, where he took the position of Norm Zulps Service Manager at Scott Chrysler (now Okanagan Dodge) and continued there until 2004. He changed career paths into the construction Àeld, but the pull of the fast pace and customer contact of the auto industry was too strong. Norm jumped at the opportunity to join the team at Cranbrook Dodge as Service Manager when it was offered to him by his long-time friend Dave Girling, in May of 2012. He and his wife Kathy and two daughters are looking forward to continuing to explore Cranbrook and the surrounding Kootenay area, and becoming part of the community. It just may take a bit to break him of his 17 years of cheering for the Rockets when attending our Kootenay Ice games.

ARE YOU PART OF THE COMMUNITY? GREAT BLOG POSTS LIKE THESE WEEKLY When my son started the ABC program, he was reading at a mid-grade one level. We were told by his school he would be fine, he would catch up, every child learns at his own pace, etc. He was in grade 5. He hated going to school; every day was a struggle to get him out the door. He thought he was going to hate going to the centre too and not get anything out of it. By the end of the first month, I no longer had to fight him to go. He liked the centre and didn’t feel judged or out of place there. My son wanted to learn to read for the first time in his life because he finally believed he would be able to. We used to hear him tell us how stupid he was. Now he tells us, “I can read, I’m not stupid.” He is more social, fits in better with his peers, and considers them friends. When we go out for dinner, he reads the menu himself. His confidence has soared. Parent teacher interviews are no longer something we dread. We hear how much his attitude has improved, he tries everything and instead of “I can’t”, “It’s I can.” For the first time since he started school he brings home his report card and can’t wait to see it. It’s all letter grades and he is so proud of it. He has caught up 4 years of school since he started at ABC. Thank you to the centre for giving my son the tools he needs to be successful. It’s the best gift he has received.
