Uplands target of vandalism
city scene
Soccer goal nets burned Police are looking for who was responsible for setting a soccer goal net on fire over the weekend. The incident happened at Harry Wipper Park on Williamson Road in Nanaimo’s Hammond Bay neighbourhood at about 1 a.m. Saturday. The net appeared to have been set on fire in several places, said Ennis Mond, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention office, who had only had a chance to view photographs of the damage Monday morning. Ian Blackwood, manager of parks maintenance and construction for the City of Nanaimo, said goal nets are supplied by local soccer associations and the various groups choose whether to take them down after games. He said the nets are worth about $200 or $400 depending on quality. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

JENNIFER MILLBANK wants to see council treated like residents.
Activity centre needs repairs
BY NIOMI PEARSON
In the story ‘Several angles needed to close infrastructure funding gap’, published Jan. 19, it was reported that the Departure Bay Kin Hut was one of the city’s two key parks facilities assets in need of repair or replacement. The article should have said the Departure Bay Activity Centre. The News Bulletin regrets the error and any inconvenience it may have caused.
A desire to see more fairness and equity prompted Lantzville Coun. Jennifer Millbank to serve a notice of motion to launch an investigation into a colleague’s Christmas tree farm. The notice, which was served Jan. 14, calls for fellow councillor Brian Dempsey to be removed as Regional District of Nanaimo director while an investigation is launched into a possible breach of the district’s zoning bylaw 60, which prohibits the sale of agricultural products on a residentially zoned property. Millbank said bylaw enforce-

ment has been a contentious issue for the district and she is concerned that it has been used as a political tool. Bylaw enforcement in Lantzville is ordered by council and executed by the regional district. “Lots of people have asked me about Mr. Dempsey’s farm and I’m not particularly concerned with what the outcome of an inquiry would be, but residents expect that politicians are subject to the same rules, and I think restoring faith in government and the council starts with looking at our own conduct,” Millbank said. She expects the investigation, if approved, to be a routine bylaw inquiry and not a firing squad. “It’s generating quite a bit of heat but my main premise is that I don’t see why it’s controversial to expect municipal politicians to be treated the same as everyone

else,” she said. Urban agriculture has been a hot-button issue in Lantzville for the past several years. Dempsey, who purchased his two-hectare property in 1986, said the motion came as a surprise. “I guess I’ll have to wait and see where it all goes,” he said. “I’ve been here doing my thing for a long time and never hid it, have been on council since the beginning and with the improvement district since 1990. I’ll let my record stand for itself.” Lantzville council will discuss the notice of motion and come to a decision at its next meeting on Jan. 28.

Vandals struck at Uplands Park Elementary School on the weekend. Nanaimo Fire Rescue was first to respond at about 1 a.m. Sunday to a fire alarm at the school. “When the crews got there – they were called to an ‘alarms activated’ – there was some rubbish burning in one of the patio areas, but when they did the walk-around the building, they found somebody had tried to break in,” said Ennis Mond, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer. A wooden realtor’s sign hanger had been pulled up and used to smash a window in a door, which allowed someone access to pull a fire alarm inside the building. Donna Reimer, school district spokeswoman, said three windows had been smashed and the school broken into. “No fire entered the school, just smoke,” Reimer said. RCMP checked for intruders in the building, but found no one, she said. Reimer did not have information on whether the damage affected school operations Monday. Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said costs for repairs will likely be at least $1,000 because window frames and glass were damaged. “They also lit the real estate sign and its frame,” O’Brien said. “They threw something into the school as well, hard enough that they dented the white board.” Police are investig ating whether the incidents at the school and a fire set at Harry Wipper Park Saturday are related. Anyone with infor mation about this incident is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-7542345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.nanaimocrimestoppers. com. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

◆ From /1 Patten taught outdoor survival to air cadets and because he was an excellent speaker, thanks in part to his involvement in Toastmasters, Slowski also recruited him to be the master of ceremonies at several air cadet events. Slowski said there wasn’t much going on in the community that Patten wasn’t part of. Merv Unger, president of the local St. John Ambulance branch, said Patten was a highly regarded member of the society, both locally and provincially, and his dedication to the organization was well known across the Island. “The community has lost a very strong pillar who dedicated himself to Nanaimo over the years and to Vancouver Island,” he said. “He was the type of person you treasured to have as a friend.” Friend Jules Xavier, who got to know Patten when his sister worked with him at Sharman Mobile Home Park, said he mentored many local children and was a fixture at local events as a St. John Ambulance volunteer. “He was likeable right away,” he said. “He had a personality that drew people to him.” Patten is survived by his wife, two children and multiple grandchildren.

Trustees want to see students
Nanaimo trustees want to hear more from students. Trustees at the education committee meeting decided to send out an invitation to students at all elementary and secondary schools urging them to do presentations at the beginning of board meetings on things that are happening at their schools. “We haven’t had that many [stu-
dent presentations] in the past few years, so this is simply making them feel welcomed, said Jamie Brennan, school board chairman. “Trustees really like to know what’s going on, give students a chance. It’s refreshing, it gives us a sense of why we’re there. For more information about making a presentation, please call 250754-5521 or go to www.sd68.bc.ca.

During the boot camp, which was held over the weekend, new and prospective cadets participated in all sorts of activities relating to naval knowledge, marching, drills, communications and survival.
If your old wood stove is burning a hole in your pocketbook, the Regional District of Nanaimo can help. Under the new re gion-wide Woodstove Exchange and Outreach Program, residents can receive a $250 rebate to replace an existing wood-burning appliance with a new high-efficiency wood stove, insert, pellet stove or gas stove/ fireplace. “The RDN board is pleased to continue the popular wood stove exchange program in 2013, said chairman Joe Stanhope. “This p ro g r a m s u p p o r t s several objectives of the RDN board’s commitment to sustainability, including the protection of local air quality. This funding ensures that residents across the region can continue to meet their home heating needs by using abundant natural resources. New high-efficiency wood stoves are proven to burn one-third less wood, reduce emissions by up to 70 per cent and significantly reduce the risk of chimney fires. The appliance must have been purchased after Jan. 18, 2013, and rebates are available while funding lasts. It called for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions – six per cent below 1990 levels by 2012. Not surprisingly, that didn’t happen. In fact, overall world carbon emissions are up by 58 per cent over those of 1990. Is there a need to keep EMISSION the growth of carbon emisGOALS sions to more reasonable virtually levels? impossible to Of course. There is conachieve. siderable proof of climate change despite what some lobby groups would have us believe. Nonetheless, Kyoto was never a viable option. The biggest polluters in the world refused to sign it or even abide by its most modest aims. Its call for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions were unrealistic, unless the developed world was to go into a selfinduced economic depression. B.C. government was late in jumping on the Kyoto bandwagon, with a carbon tax, carbon credit purchases by government bodies and promotion of alternative fuels. While the latter makes some sense, the first two do not. The carbon tax is simply a cash cow for the province that we will never get rid of. The carbon credit program involves taxpayers subsidizing private companies for capital projects that they would likely undertake anyway. It is ridiculous to demand that schools and hospitals be carbon neutral when the tax dollars spent to do so go to the private sector. The federal and provincial governments need to have realistic programs to reduce emissions, and not buy into agreements that aren’t possible.

At first glance, it would seem reasonable that in order to reduce packaging costs, retailers and manufactures would simply reduce packaging amounts. But if there is value in recycled paper, newsprint, cardboard, tins and other recyclables, where is the incentive to stop producing it? Mega-corporations like Tim Hortons and Loblaw, both of which are stakeholders in MultiMaterial B.C., aren’t dummies – they won’t incur a cost if there isn’t a potential profit in it. It only stands to reason that if recyclables are profitable, the more that is produced the more profit is made, especially if there is a monopoly. What we can also reasonably presume is that under this new system, expected to take full effect in spring 2014, consumers will be forced to pay more for packaged materials, packaging itself won’t be reduced, and that industry will profit from it. Not exactly a stunning win for the environment, especially since much of that material has the potential to still end up in the landfill at additional cost to taxpayers. Putting recycled materials and costs in the hands of retailers and industry can be manufactured to look like a good idea, but I’m not buying it. reporter2@nanaimobulletin.com

More answers needed on dam removal
To the Editor, Re: Estimates sought to rebuild dams, Jan. 3. More answers need to be forthcoming from the city regarding the so-called necessary removal of the dams. First, why has the process been sole-sourced to one company? At a quote of $7 million for their plan to remove and re-vegetate, the consultants stand to make $700,000 in design fees without any competitive process. The city staff has a fiduciary responsibility to the taxpayers and leaves some wondering if this process is typical. Second, the city website showed a cost of $450,000 to reinforce and upgrade Westwood Lake. Why would Colliery Park, with significantly smaller bodies of water, cost so much more? Several engineers in the industry have stated that the dams can be reinforced
and upgraded for a fraction of what the city technologist suggested it would cost to either repair or remove the dams. The drawings and photos on the website paint a pretty picture, but the reality is that it will take decades for the forest to regenerate to its original form. Lastly, did the city consider the social implications of removing the dam? From what I’ve observed, many seasonal users don’t have the economic wherewithal to afford a car to drive up to the free swimming at Westwood Lake or pay for swimming in an indoor/outdoor facility. For this reason alone, we should be reinforcing the dam out of enlightened selfinterest. Taxpayers deserve better and they deserve answers regarding the whole tendering process. Conservatives divide the right
To the Editor, It’s sad that our public officials are so unaware of basic biology, health and environmental issues. The 2012 Bioinitiative Report was just released at www.bioinitiative.org. Twenty-five international scientists and doctors reported on the most recent science on electromagnetic radiation, in particular, radio frequency microwaves emitted by wireless devices, and their summary says we’re in deep doo-doo (my words, not theirs) already, and will be in deeper if we continue adding layers of radiation to our already over-saturated environment. North America has the absolute worst regulations worldwide, and our elected officials, who are supposed to protect public health, don’t. Christel Martin Nanaimo
To the Editor, What do you do when one political party has been in office too long with repeated incompetence? Why not just build your own party. Looks like John Cummins’s strong will and tenacity to rebuild and resurrect B.C.’s oldest party, the B.C. Conservatives, is beginning to take shape. Now the B.C. Liberals and the B.C. Conservatives both appear to occupy the centerright political spectrum. Clearly Cummins knows you can’t re-build a party with same-dung differentday. They have to keep the discredited Liberal brand apples out of their barrel. The B.C. Conservatives need a public outcry or revolt and who knows, the frustration levels are high enough to trigger that very thing. Roland Seguin Langley

Greenhouse gas effect an unproven fairy tale To the Editor, Re: Climate coalition claims simply not legitimate, Letters, Jan. 12. Ian Gartshore argues about “balanced coverage” in the climate discussion. But then he repeats again the never proven fairy tale of a so-called greenhouse effect. The comparison of the car in the summer sun and our atmosphere shows that he has no idea about physics. The car is a closed system while the atmosphere is an open system and not comparable. A greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide gases is not possible and not proven by any climate scientist. He should take note of the facts that climate change is the most natural thing in the world and will happen whether people like it or not. Wilfried Weber Nanoose Bay
Climate debate hasn’t changed To the Editor, Re: Climate coalition claims simply not
legitimate, Letters, Jan. 12. It is one of the most enduring modern myths that people believed the Earth was flat. Eratosthenes judged the circumference of the earth to within a couple of thousand miles in the third century BC. Famous disputes between religion and scientists were more about power and image than substance. The debate hasn’t changed much. Waving the great sheaf of doom with its bundled woes, accompanied with suitable algorean histrionics, is likely to distract the focus from climate change and lead to paralysis instead of coherent action. Al Gore built the oft-repeated bundle in his famous movie while managing one of the most energyprofligate households in the state of Tennessee. No fortunate son, I will point out that no one ever cites Gore’s environmental accomplishments during his lifetime in
political office. But I’m sure they’re equal to those of his bizarro twin, George Bush. Easy to see why Gordon Campbell was such a fan. That performance matches well with giving yourself a $64,000 raise while keeping the minimum wage stagnant for a decade. The greatest unreality of all is the carbon tax and accelerated schedule of hydro and fuel increases meant to ameliorate global warming. This allows government to advertise its low tax rate and fiscal responsibility while hiding behind B.C. Hydro, its rev-
enue collecting agent. It makes the poor poorer, forces people to drive older polluting cars longer, and spend more money on repairs with little hope of change. All these things are guilty of stalling the issue. All act to obscure the fact that this province and this country have not a ghost of a plan to deal with climate change. Michael Dance Nanaimo

protests highlight a foundational problem in the 1982 Canadian Constitution. Section 15(1) establishes equal rights and states “every individual is equal before and under the law.” Section 15(2) then creates other rights for some based on race. A race-based Constitution undermines the unity and common good of all Canadians. The vice-president of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs claims “the Snuneymuxw people have been here since the beginning of time.” The coastal Indians emigrated here from Siberia, sometime between five thousand to 12 thousand years ago. The Kennewick Man tribe may have preceded them. There should only be one race in Canada, and that is the human race. There should only be one Canada, not 630 First Nations. It is time to demand equal citizenship for all Canadians. Bart Jessup Gabriola Island

arts Tribute to the king
Randy Elvis Friskie performs two shows at the Port Theatre Saturday (Jan. 26). PHOTO CONTRIBUTED
an Elvis impersonator, one of the best in North America. “The guy went up and sang and when he got off stage he had the worst attitude,” recalled Friskie. His father convinced him to perform. “I did really well and people went nuts,” he said. That experience started his journey to paying tribute to Elvis as a career. He then went to the Elvis Elvis Elvis Show and eventually started to perform in Las Vegas, even though he was underage at the time. But Friskie got tired of the Las Vegas format because it was the same two shows every night and he wanted to mix it up. He said Elvis had more than 400 hits and he had to do the same seven each night. He’s looking forward to performing at Nanaimo’s Port Theatre. The last time he did his show in the community he was onstage with his father and daughter. His father has passed away since then and he said the Port holds a special soft spot in his heart. This time his daughter Cassandra will join him onstage for a duet. The fans fuel his commitment to having a great show every night. “You are out there for them … without them you are nothing,” he said. Randy Elvis Friskie and his Las Vegas Show Band perform two shows at the Port Theatre Saturday (Jan. 26), 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $39.50 and are available by calling 250-754-8550, www.portthe atre.com or the box office, located at 125 Front St.

andy Elvis Friskie pays tribute to the King of Rock ’n’ Roll. People tell him he bears an uncanny resemblance to Elvis in both ma annerisms and looks. One fan told him afteer a concert “when I saw you it’s kind of llike his and your spirits were amalgamated.” But Friskie doesn’t intend to impersonate the King onstage, but ratheer pay tribute to a man he respeects and admires. “Nobod dy sounds exactly the same ass someone else,” said Friskie. “You’ve got to have a bit of yourself in there to keep it real.” He alsso doesn’t perform to cues. Friiskie said some people wait for a specific spot, but he feels freee to just perform. “I feel the music. You won’t see me wait w for a programmed spot,” said Friskie. Friskiee also steps out of character when he’s offsstage and speaks to people as himself, som mething many Elvis performers don’t do,, he said. Friskie’s introduction to Elvis started when hee was in Grade 1. He saw an Elvis movie an nd then for a school show and tell sang Elv vis’ Blue Suede Shoes. “I reallly like the way the guy carried himself. He sseemed personable. He just wanted to enterttain and that is all I ever wanted to do,” said d Friskie. “He would bring you into his story y and he would put everything on the line. He would take you with him.” Friskiee grew up in a musical family. His father w was a singer. He got his first taste of performing as the King at 14. There was perform

Grants available for arts and culture Non-profit arts and culture organizations can apply for financial support under two B.C. government programs calling for applications. The B.C. Creative Communities Program aims at helping arts and cultural organizations get more people involved in artistic activities in their communities, which includes festivals. It includes creating new community engagement activities, producing milestone anniversary celebrations such as historic community anniversaries and undertaking cultural mapping projects. The program provides one-timeonly grants and the government has designated up to $500,000 to support these goals. Priority will be given to projects that demonstrate a need for capital development, engage underserved groups, involve partners, included environmentally sensitive practices and have secured other sources of funding. The B.C. Creative Spaces Program is meant to address chal-
lenges that arts and culture organizations face in improving the physical conditions of spaces and facilities. It includes developing new spaces, improving existing facilities and acquiring specialized equipment. The government is providing up to $1 million for the program. Applications for both programs must be received before Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. The funding is available for B.C. artists and cultural organizations, First Nations band councils and friendship centres that encourage participation in creative activities, improve quality of life for residents, create identity and a sense of place, and contribute to the local economy. Application forms and a list of guidelines are available at www. cscd.gov.bc.ca/arts_culture/index. htm. For more information on the programs please call 250-952-6510 or e-mail BCCreativeCommunities@ gov.bc.ca.

NANAIMO WINS 7-1 to rebound from 6-4 loss. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
The Nanaimo Clippers’ goal scoring was a constant on an up-and-down weekend, and it helped the team to a victory. The city’s junior A hockey team won one of its two games, defeating the Powell River Kings 7-1 on Saturday on the road one night after a 6-4 home loss to the Vernon Vipers. Coach Mike Vandekamp said his team was loose defensively and wasn’t sharp in goal in Friday’s loss. Those factors prevented the team from gaining much momentum after goals. “There wasn’t much flow to the game. It was a pretty ugly game,” said the coach. “We mustered up a lot of attack, we just didn’t keep it out.” Reid Sturos scored twice for the Clips and Matt Grant and Garrett Brandsma also tallied. Jayson Argue was pulled in the loss as Nanaimo outshot Vernon 44-24. Former Clipper Mason Blacklock was selected the game’s first star with a goal and three assists. Vandekamp said the defeat stressed the need for the Clippers to come out focused and ready every game.
GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN
Nanaimo Clippers player Chris Newton, left, is chased by Vernon Vipers opponent Geoff Crisfield behind the goal during Friday night’s B.C. Hockey League game at Frank Crane Arena. The Clippers were outscored 6-4.
“We are not good enough to come out and play river hockey and win,” said the coach. “We have to play solid as a team. We have to be focused on that.” The next night’s game took a little while to become a blowout, as the score was still 2-1 late in the second period. With 45
seconds left in the frame, the Clippers scored and the Kings took a doubleminor penalty during the visitors’ goal celebration. Nanaimo broke it open with one power-play marker late in the second, one more early in the third and another goal seven seconds after that.
Kyle Kramer finished with two goals, Trevor Fitzgerald and Sturos had a goal and an assist each and Brendan Taylor, Aaron Hadley and Grant were the other scorers. Derek Dun stopped 37 shots and was chosen first star as his team was outshot 38-29.
GAME ON … The Clippers play the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on Wednesday (Jan. 23) at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. Nanaimo is also at home for games Friday and Sunday against the Trail Smoke Eaters and Merritt Centennials, respectively. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
Basketball Mariners win every game
GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN
VIU Mariners player Jamie MacFarlane, right, drives past a Quest Kermodes opponent in Friday’s game.
The VIU Mariners didn’t just defeat the league leaders, they thrashed them. Vancouver Island University’s women’s basketball team blew out the Capilano Blues 73-43 on Saturday at the VIU gym. Bill McWhinnie, coach of the Mariners women, said his players gave a complete 40-minute effort in both their weekend wins – VIU also beat the Quest Kermodes 68-39 on Friday – which allowed the M’s to compete with two good teams. “It’s important. We needed two victories to enhance our playoff position and it gives
us momentum going forward for the rest of the season,” McWhinnie said. “And I think it showed the girls we can play with anybody if we play well.” Saturday’s result lifted VIU (8-5) to third place in the Pacific Western Athletic Association standings, six points back of Cap (11-2). Shayna Worthington led the M’s against the Blues with 18 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals. Jocelyn Jones scored 13 points to go with nine rebounds and seven assists and Erin Vekic had 13, as well. “We took away a couple of
[Cap’s] strengths and went on a huge run between the third and fourth quarters that kind of put them away,” McWhinnie said. The previous night against the Ker modes, Jones’s 17 points led the way. The Mariners men (10-3) also won both their weekend games, topping the Kermodes 77-64 on Friday and beating the Blues 93-59 the next day. GAME ON … VIU’s b-ball teams are on the road for the next three weeks, starting Friday (Jan. 25) with games at Columbia Bible College. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
One of the longest road trips of the season was a successful one for Vancouver Island University’s volleyball teams. Braxton Clark travelled to represent the club at the Saskatchewan Open in Regina on Saturday, where he won gold in his under-18 division. He won every one of his matches via ipon (fullpoint takedown). The same day, his teammates took part in the Campbell River Open.
