Town must spend up to $7,500 on carbon credits BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

“It just happened to turn out that they are all from here,” said training director Diana Miller, who operates Helping Paws Service Dogs in the Creston Valley.

Creston town council got a reminder at its Jan. 15 regular meeting that signing on to a provincial carbon neutral commitment comes with a cost. In response to pressure in recent years for local governments to reduce carbon emissions, three adjoining regional districts — Central Kootenay, East Kootenay and Kootenay Boundary — along with Columbia Basin Trust and some First Nations, formed their own consulting organization. The result, Carbon Neutral Kootenays, provides advice on how to reduce carbon footprints and how to mitigate target shortfalls with carbon credit purchases. “Creston signed on to the voluntary climate action charter several years ago, committing, among other things, to be carbon neutral in its operations by 2012,” CNK’s Trish Dehnel told council. She outlined steps the town has taken toward achieving that goal, but said that it will be as much as 300 tons of carbon emissions over neutrality when the analysis is complete. “To meet this commitment, Creston must take responsibility for its remaining emissions by purchasing offsets,” she said. The cost will be under $7,500, possibly much less, Dehnel said, and CNK recommends that the credits be purchased from the Darkwoods project, the forest on the southwest side of Kootenay Lake that was recently bought by the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

On Jan. 5 at 4 a.m., Pridham Studio owners Micah (above) and Jeremiah Wassink became parents to Adeline Elyse Dahlia Wassink, the Creston Valley’s first baby born in 2013. She weighed seven pounds, nine ounces, and was 20.5 inches long, born a week early after four hours of labour. Micah gave birth at home, and the baby was delivered by midwife Leah Barlow at the start of a busy day — she delivered two more within 24 hours. This is the second New Year’s baby for the Wassink family; Jeremiah’s sister, Rachael, is the mother of 2009 New Year’s baby, Zoe.

Therapy dogs From page 1 Tommy and Barney (10-monthold German shepherd crosses), Chevie (three-year-old Shar-PeiGreat Dane cross) and Kenzie (German shepherd) recently completed a six-week training program — called “basic training” because it’s veteran-related — to qualify them with Citadel. (Kenzie’s littermate, Jane, will be sent with three others at a later date.) Miller and PAWS president Vicki McDonald went to Vancouver ahead of the dogs to interview potential recipients. “We have to pick which ones would be right for them,” said Miller. The dogs already meet Assistance Dog International requirements, but their training will go further once they arrive at their new homes, following a flight donated by Pacific Coastal Airlines. “Once they’re paired up with new owners, they go through a 14-week training program,” said Miller. “It’s very structured.” The second round trains both the dogs and their owner, who learn handling skills, obedience, grooming, general care, feeding, first aid, public manners and etiquette. And if required, the dogs may go through still further training to become actual service dogs. Miller gives a lot of credit for the dogs’ success to McDonald, Pat May and Joan Halvorsen, who worked with the dogs around town, as well as to local business owners who allowed the dogs inside. “We want to thank local business for allowing public access,” said Miller. “It’s been so huge for their training.” People in the community, too, have been helpful, not distracting the dogs by petting them or speaking to them while they are wearing their blue training vests. “Members of the community have been really good about that,” said May. Although these four dogs were unwanted and turned over to the PAWS shelter, their future looks bright, partly because of the second chance given to them by PAWS. “Volunteers spend time to make sure they are adoptable,” said Miller. “These were throwaway dogs,” said May. “People didn’t want them. Now, look what they’ve become in the community!”

Johnson’s Landing farmer teaching COTR seed saving workshop BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

Saving seeds is an ancient skill that is slowly becoming a dying art — but Patrick Steiner hopes to steer Creston Valley gardeners and farmers back to traditional ways when he presents “Starting with Seeds” on Saturday, the first in the College of the Rockies’ Food in the Valley workshop series. “This is something that for a long time, generations, was practiced all the time,” he said. “Farmers, and gardeners too, used to grow their seeds.” In the latter half of the 20th century, selfsufficiency began to fade as seed collecting became something done by large companies. “A lot of people lost skills and knowledge about how to save their own seeds,” said Steiner. “With the loss of that knowledge base, you’re stuck with what the seed companies give you. For a long time, that was not a concern.” With Colleen O’Brien, Steiner operates Stellar Seeds and Kootenay Joe Farms in Johnson’s Landing at the north end of Kootenay Lake, where they grow mixed vegetables and seeds for everything from beans to eggplant to rutabaga to annual flowers. Most of their seeds are heirloom or heritage varieties, which have been around for generations, and have distinct colours, flavours and shapes. Some of those seeds were once easy to obtain, but disappeared as larger seed companies took over small ones. “With that, they would often drop part of the seed lines that were offered,” said Steiner. “We actually lost agricultural biodiversity.” In Saturday’s workshop, Steiner will tailor information to the audience, as he does when he has offered a similar presentation around the province. “It’s kind of aimed at gardeners of all experience levels who have an interest in harvesting, collecting and growing their own seeds,” said Stenier. “Usually, it’s more of a gardener crowd, but we do get farmers.” No matter the experience level, it’s important to discuss the basic rules of seed saving — and for some, that will mean starting at the beginning. “A lot of people either don’t save their own seeds or think its very difficult,” Steiner said. “Within a few hours, we can go over those seed saving rules and make your seed saving successful.” Saving seeds is a step toward developing stronger food security, as seeds are saved based on their reaction to a particular climate. “Find out what you like,” he said. “Often if you grow them in your own garden or farm, you acclimatize them to conditions around you. Many seeds you buy off the shelf, they’re produced as far away as China or Israel, and not necessarily acclimatized to own gardens. “With just a few years of saving your own seeds, there should be a beneficial dif-

ference with your crops. … You’ll have probably selected seeds that will grow best in your own garden.” Steiner and O’Brien have been farming for about 17 years and lived in Salmon Arm before moving to Johnson’s Landing two years ago. “We’d been farming for many years, but always leasing land,” he said. “We were in the process of looking for our own land and looking for an area we wanted to live in for a long time. The Kootenays was one of the places we wanted to be because of the community and young families around.”

Binks now Directors help Thunder chairing Cats make up lost committee concession revenue BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks took the reins of the local services committee on Jan. 14, assuming the role Creston Mayor Ron Toyota has had for two years. “In the past we have often approved resolutions that haven’t had a time frame,” he said after assuming the chair’s position. “I don’t want us doing that. When we pass a resolution it should have a time frame attached to it. When we don’t do that it puts the staff in a compromised position and I don’t think that’s fair to them.” With that statement on the record, the second-term RDCK director proceeded with a meeting agenda that started off with a report from emergency services co-ordinator Alanna Garrett, who said that plans are underway to prepare for the annual spring freshet and flooding issues that can arise. Garrett heard concerns from Area A director Garry Jackman about the lack of response when blocked culverts are reported along Highway 3A. Dealing with those blockages can prevent bigger problems that occur with the buildup of water on the high side of the highway. “How the Ministry of Transportation and YRB address those reports is beyond our capacity,” Garrett said. Area B director John Kettle concurred with Jackman, observing that provincial governments historically “won’t do anything to prevent a disaster but they will pay after it happens.” He said a meeting designed to “get all the players in the same room at the same time”, including various cabinet ministers, is planned for February to talk about the issue.

Creston Valley Thunder Cats president Bob Gollan presented a financial report to the Regional District of Central Kootenay local services committee, saying that the loss of concession revenues will leave the club about $2,500 in the hole for the 2012-13 season. In the absence of a concession kitchen since renovations to the arena foyer were undertaken, the Thunder Cats were selling pop, chips and candy, netting $200-$300 per game. Now, with the concession open and being operated by A Break in Time Caffé, the club loses that revenue. “Don’t get me wrong,” Gollan said. “I agree with the decision made to operate the concession in this way. But we need those revenues to be made up so we don’t go into debt.” Area B director John Kettle ($1,000) and Area A director Garry Jackman ($750) agreed immediately to help with grants to cover the shortfall, while Area C director Larry Binks and Creston Mayor Ron Toyota said they would take the issue back to their constituencies. Gollan said the lack of concession revenues should be a factor in the team’s ice rental agreement because Thunder Cats fans are the largest concession users. “We have an obligation to the hockey team to make this work,” Kettle said. “Without the Thunder Cats we would have to raise user fees or taxes to cover our costs for this facility.” Committee Briefs •Pet Adoption and Welfare Society treasurer Lynn Ray presented a report

and requested that directors consider providing ongoing funding for an organization “that is a victim of its own success.” Relying on grants, donations and fundraising takes a lot of energy out of the volunteers, she said, and the many services PAWS provides are of direct benefit to local taxpayers. “We need sustainable funding,” she said. “Without it we could need to start charging fees for services.” Directors acknowledged the value of the work PAWS does and promised to explore ways of helping to fund services. “We need to step up to the plate,” Binks said. “We can’t just keep asking you to do this for free.” •RDCK staff were directed to explore the feasibility of moving building inspection and emergency preparedness staff offices to the community complex from the library building. “Let’s let these departments tell us what they need,” Kettle said. Kettle and Joe Chirico, RDCK general manager of community services, got into a brief discussion about whether the emergency operations centre should also be moved to the complex from town hall. Binks put a stop to the conversation when it was revealed the discussion was referring to a report to the RDCK that was not made public. “If the information can’t be released then it shouldn’t be brought up at a meeting,” he said. •A draft bylaw that will make the Creston Valley local services committee an official arm of the RDCK is expected to be ready for February’s meeting. •Staff were directed to get a report on necessary upgrades to Rotacrest Hall.

It wasn’t a surprise that the first two comments after town council heard a presentation about carbon credits came from Couns. Judy Gadicke and Tanya Ducharme. They are typically the first two members on council to raise questions and challenge assumptions. Gadicke always questions spending and Ducharme has lots of experience in environmental issues relating to carbon emissions from her work at Columbia Brewery. The presentation was made by Carbon Neutral Kootenays, an organization formed and funded by the three regional districts in the southeast of the province, and a number of municipalities. Chalk the formation of CNK up to good decision-making, an effort to help guide local governments to reduce their carbon footprint and to help identify local projects that offer carbon credits. My first brush with carbon credits came a number of years ago when we were purchasing flight tickets to Europe. Did we want to purchase carbon credits to offset our contribution to carbon emissions the flight would make? the website asked. I was unfamiliar with the concept so I did some research, learning that non-profits and forprofit companies were setting up systems that allow companies and governments to offset their own carbon emissions by purchasing credits from projects which help reduce carbon emissions. Planting forests with long-term management plans is one way but there is a myriad of others, more popping up almost daily. I did

Lojong slogan 58: Don’t be frivolous

To work with this slogan, it is necessary to look at how you spend your physical, mental and emotional time. In short, how do you invest your life energy? It is easy to fritter time away in frivolous pursuits that are entertaining and do not infuse your life with quality. Such activities lead nowhere and are a waste of your one precious and wild life. Chasing after and indulging in mindless entertainment is like eating junk food: It is ultimately unsatisfying, and, if truth be told, ultimately harmful. Frivolity comes across as lighthearted and innocent, but it is not. It is not real openness, but a form of aggression toward your own best self. To be frivolous is to be selfindulgently carefree, unconcerned about or lacking any serious purpose, to have little or no importance, to be unworthy of careful attention. Frivolity results in a life not fully lived.

Arab Spring struggle for democracy is a sham To the Editor: Several years ago it was leaked that the U.S. and its allies were going to orchestrate “regime change” in five different countries in the Middle East in order to protect their interests. The socalled Arab Spring struggle for democracy is nothing but a sham. The first nation to fall, according to the leak, would be Afghanistan, then Iraq, then Libya, the next would be Syria, and finally Iran. In the recent past we have seen three down and two more to go. Syria is the most anti-American country in the region, and its struggles against American power plays is creating an ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region. Dr. Radwan Ziadeh, senior fellow at the U.S. Institute for Social Policy And Understanding in Washington, D.C., is on the ground floor of involvement in supporting the opposition in Syria. In his advice, the intervention in Syria needs to be “velveteen” in nature and woven patiently over time. The mission has to be led by a regional force composed of Turkish and Arab militaries, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are funding the opposition, and Washington and European powers remotely back the operation facilitating its success.

Speaking in Zagreb, Croatia, in November, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced that Washington is reorganizing the front representing the so-called rebels in Syria, and went on to explain U.S. efforts to groom a new leadership capable of forming a government after the government of President Bashar al-Assad is toppled. So things in our world are not as our mainstream media leads us to believe. Going completely off the present subject, if the U.S. is so concerned about helping people establish democracy in their oppressive countries why has it done nothing about the situation in Burma where the most despotic military dictatorship has been in power these past 30 years or so? Obama and Hillary have just visited the leader of the opposition who had been under house arrest for nearly 20 years, and only recently released. Alex Ewashen Creston

Town should have current statements available To the Editor: Budget meetings are coming up for the Town of Creston. I wanted to look at the financial statements prior to the

www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca 7

budget meetings to understand the town’s financial state and see if the financial reporting was relevant, reliable and comparable to other communities’ financial information (which is the main criterion of financial reporting and wise decision making). From these statements I wanted to see how much we have coming in and from where — and see how much we owe, and to whom — long term and short term, and therefore see if the budget allocations and later budget decisions were wise. I could not get these relevant figures, and the town council does not get them either — no one has access to them now or access to them prior to budget decisions. The town council is given a net figure, I was told by the head of finance and corporate services, and from this individual figure the town council makes its budget decisions. The finance and corporate services official would let me download 2011 financials, but that does not make relevant 2013 decisions. If any corporation, company, or household ran their finances like this, they would probably be a lost cause very shortly. How can any institution know how to wisely handle their future finances without knowing where they made and will make their revenue from or who they owe money to? I was astounded. No wonder taxes are apparently higher in Creston than they are in West Vancouver, Victoria or Kelowna. This interim 2012 financial reporting (statements) needs to be freely available to all citizens of Creston, and for sure every town council should study them, before making any budget allocations. Landscaping for energy savings

Besides raising your property value and generally making your home a nicer place, proper landscaping can also help you keep your energy bills lower all year round. Most people can see the obvious benefits of a few carefully placed shade trees through the heat of summer. Besides keeping you and your home out of the direct sun the living plants in your yard actually keep you cool through evaporative cooling as moisture is lost from their leaves to the atmosphere. It's like having your own giant air conditioning system. But seeing that it is winter right now I'm going to call attention to how your landscaping can actually keep you warmer for less. Years ago in agricultural college, I learned the benefits of shelterbelts to crop production on the prairies. These oversized hedges planted around the edges of fields actually help to increase heat units and crop yields by reducing the wind speed. It is this same principle that can help keep your home warmer. It is accepted that a windbreak of

Q

some sort will save you 10 to 25 per cent on heating costs by reducing the air infiltration (leakage) rate on your home. On cold and windy days, heat losses due to leakage may represent up to 50

Nursery Notes Evan Davies per cent of your total heating costs. Blocking cold winter winds also reduces heat loss due to conduction through your home, as well. By placing a hedge near your home you can reduce the wind velocity on the surface of your house and therefore reduce the air infiltration rate. For example, here in Erickson our old house gets a regular crosswind from the northeast. That part of the house was fully exposed to the wind with the exception of an area to the

UOTE OF THE

north corner partially protected by some large rhododendrons. The sliding glass door, picture windows and walls all lose heat through air infiltration and conductive heat loss. By planting a hedge of yew trees about six feet out from the house walls, I have reduced the wind speed from 12 miles per hour to about four miles per hour. This serves to create a dead air space beside the house walls as well as deflecting some of the wind around the house. While this evergreen hedge has taken some time to establish, it is low maintenance, drought tolerant and deer proof. There are a number of other evergreen shrubs that could be chosen, including some varieties of holly, mugho pines, junipers and cedar trees. Semi-evergreen and densely twiggy deciduous shrubs can also work well to reduce wind speeds and if you are short on space you could even opt for a vine of some sort growing on a trellis. Evan Davies owns Beltane Nursery at 2915 Highway 3 in Erickson.

What Parents Need to Know Dear Parents, The Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA), given to Grade 4 and 7 students, does not count towards your child’s marks. The results do not actively support your child’s learning. • FSA tests are expensive and waste money at a time when cuts are being made. teachers teach. • FSA tests do not help students learn or teachers teach. • FSA tests take valuable time away from more meaningful learning. • The data does not provide real help to students, parents, or schools. • The results are misused to rank schools and promote privatization. Winter is a good time to concentrate on sounds of birds other than the calls and songs of spring and summer made by robins, warblers, song sparrows and buntings, to list a few. Now seemingly dominating the winter season are the calls of ravens, crows, Steller’s jays and pileated woodpeckers, whose loud “kak, kak, kak, kak” rings through the winter forest.

Out There

Ed McMackin Detecting the location of a pileated woodpecker is not as challenging when it is calling as when it is just “chopping” at some tree. Now, when one is located, it is even more challenging to get close enough to this sometimes not-so-shy bird to find that there is a difference between some individuals. While on a winter walk, I chanced to get a close look of a pileated chopping away on a tree below my location. In the bright afternoon sun, I got a good view of its glistening red crest and the red “moustache” streaking back from the beak, a distinguishing mark of a male pileated woodpecker. The most common indication of the presence of woodpeckers, when winter’s chill permeates the forest, is the sound of their persistent pecking on the trunks of trees. That is how I have located most woodpeckers. However, determining the precise location may not be so easy, either. Once I heard the sound of pecking coming from some treetops. Unable to determine which tree it was, I put my ear to the trunks of several trees until I could clearly hear the pecking sound, loud and clear, through a specific trunk. It was then I knew which was its choice lunch stop. Actually, I think some woodpeckers lunch all day long, cloudy or sunny. It doesn’t seem to matter. Late one winter afternoon, I was on the edge of a dense stand of evergreen trees where I heard a pecking sound that I had heard there before. I tried to get a good view of the bird, which I expected was a northern three-toed woodpecker. It was on the right kind of tree, had the right pecking habit and was pecking where I had heard it before. But, here it was pecking away into the dusk till it got too dark for me to possibly identify it. Not too many of us “listen for lunch”, but woodpeckers do. They will perch on a tree trunk, cock their head one way and then the other until they get a bearing on where to drill. The sounds of wood-boring beetle larvae carving their wooden tunnels just under the bark can, at least to a woodpecker, be quite audible. Once on a summer day I was snooping some woods when I heard a barely audible scraping sound coming from a tree trunk. I was able to pinpoint the location of the sound, whereupon I put my ear to the

trunk and heard it even more clearly. I am sure woodpecker hearing and smelling ability is much more acute than mine. Tracking down a three-toed woodpecker is probably the most difficult, not because they are that quiet but because they are probably the least common of all our Kootenay woodpeckers. Along with that would be our black-backed woodpeckers. I sometimes call the three-toed a “ladder-backed” woodpecker because of the horizontal black stripes on the back between the black wings. However, ladder-backed is officially applied only to a woodpecker of agave communities of the southwestern United States. Our male three-toed and black-backed woodpeckers both have yellow crowns winter and summer. Last week the best view of a three-toed this season came, in spite of crunchy snow, on a trail in the Arrow Creek district. This male was foraging on the lower trunk of a larch giving plain views of each side, the back and of the yellow crown. Our two common woodpeckers are the hairy and the smaller downy woodpeckers. The hairy is nearly robin size and the downy is about half that, but when they are hard to distinguish that way, then, perhaps, they can be distinguished by the bill length compared to the head. The bill of the hairy is over half the length of its head and the bill of the downy is less than half the length of its head. Both males have a little red topknot. This winter I have seen more hairy woodpeckers in pairs than individually. A pair is coming to my beef fat feeders. They, along with pileated woodpeckers, may be seen just about anywhere there are trees or even hydro poles. The northern three-toed and black-backed woodpeckers favour dense forests of cedar-hemlock that include western larch. Checking out our winter woodpeckers can make out door walks and exercise more interesting. Have fun! Ed McMackin is a biologist by profession but a naturalist and hiker by nature. Improve mind and body with Taoist Tai Chi TAOIST TAI CHI

Improve your mind and body. Lift your spirit with Taoist Tai Chi, a gentle set of movements that promote health and wellbeing for people of all ages and in all health conditions. Tai chi originates from an ancient Chinese art and system of holistic health practices which involve the movement of the spine and all parts of the body. The Fung Loy Kok Taoist Tai Chi Society teaches a set of 108 moves, a sequence of slow and graceful movements designed to help the body regain natural health by strengthening and relaxing both body and mind. The beginner level helps the student develop body awareness and a healthy physical posture by gently moving the body in ways that optimize muscular relaxation, body alignment, co-ordination and balance. Beginners also learn the benefits of practicing together as a group, to let go of self-consciousness, to work at their own level of physical ability, to trust the group to guide and support them, and to have fun. Continued practice of tai chi will increase circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids, increase overall strength, mobility of joints and elasticity of muscles and tendons, improve breathing and cardiovascular fitness, enhance concentration and relaxation, reduce tension and stress, and generally improve a wide range of health problems such as poor circulation, high blood pressure,

arthritis, back pain, digestive disorders just to name a few. The style taught by the Fung Loy Kok Taoist Tai Chi Society can be practiced by people of any age or in any state of health. It is a self-regulated form of exercise that lends itself to the needs of all participants. It is non-combative and non-competitive and is practiced for its health improving abilities.

ered his health through his study of tai chi and other internal Taoist arts. He understood the great potential to improve health and alleviate suffering with the practice of these disciplines and vowed to make the Taoist internal arts available to all who wished to learn them. To do so, Master Moy developed the Taoist tai chi internal art of health, an art that brings together the many insights he learned about the workings of human physiology, internal circulation and spiritual training. He immigrated to Canada in 1970 and formed the Fung Loy Kok Taoist Tai Chi Society, a registered charity through which he devoted the remainder of his life to helping others and making Taoist tai chi available to all. The Fung Loy Kok Taoist Tai Chi Society has since become an international society with members in more than 500 locations in 27 countries. Taoist tai chi is taught by members who have experienced the benefits of tai chi and wish to perpetuate Master Moy’s legacy by becoming accredited instructors teaching as volunteers without monetary gain. More information about the Fung Loy Kok Taoist Tai Chi Society can be found at www.taoist.org. A beginner class starts Feb. 5 and runs from 9-11 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church. The first class is always an open house and anyone curious about tai chi is welcome try it out, ask questions and join the group for tea. Peewees finish East Kootenay season undefeated, Bantams fourth in home tourney CRESTON VALLEY MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

Thunder Cats win two on weekend BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats are now tied for last place in the Eddie Mountain Division after winning two games on the weekend, beating the Golden Rockets 5-4 and Penticton Lakers 4-3 in overtime. And with nine games left until the end of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League season, that’s what head coach Josh Hepditch hopes will keep happening. “It’s been a while since we could string a few together,” he said. “But with our division being so tight, we’ve got to get on a roll and keep it going. It’s right down to the wire.” On Friday, the Thunder Cats hosted the Golden Rockets for a game that started out well, with goals by Matthew Murray and Jesse Collins tying the score 2-2 after the first period. “[Murray] really stepped it up in the first period and got the guys going,” said Hepditch. Angus Johnston, assisted by linemates Ty Kronewitt and Matti Jmaeff, scored twice in the second to give the Thunder Cats a 4-2 lead. “Two goals in one shift was a huge energy boost for us,” said Hepditch. The boost didn’t last, though, and the Rockets scored twice in the third period, tying the score to send the game into overtime, which lasted two minutes before Andrew Hodder scored on a power play. “I give full credit to our players for staying with it and battling and finding a way to get that extra

point,” Hepditch said. Sunday’s home game against the Penticton Lakers had a slow start, with the Lakers scoring three goals before Marcel Fuchs scored one for the Thunder Cats late in the second period. Angus Johnston and Ty Kronewitt scored in the third period to tie the score 3-3. “We showed some character and battled back to get into overtime,” said Hepditch. After two minutes of overtime, the Thunder Cats won the game with a goal by Trevor Hanna. The return of Jesse Collins, who had been out for weeks with an upper body injury, played a big part in the weekend’s wins. “He provided some good leadership and offense,” said Hepditch. On Friday, the Thunder Cats will visit the Fernie Ghostriders, who they beat 6-1 on the road and lost 3-2 in double overtime last month. The Ghostriders lead the Eddie Mountain Division with 57 points, one ahead of the Rockets, who are followed by the Kimberley Dynamiters with 45 and the Thunder Cats and Columbia Valley Rockies with 36. “It‘s going to be another bit of a test for us,” said Hepditch. “They’re fighting for first and we’re fighting for every point we can get.” The Spokane Braves will visit the next night, and although they have fewer points than the Creston team, the Thunder Cats have to stay on guard. “We don’t want to fall in trap of thinking of them as a lower-place team,” said Hepditch.

For the second year in a row, the Creston Chiefs peewee team has finished the East Kootenay regular season undefeated. At home on Saturday versus Whitefish, the Chiefs led 3-0 after the first period and 7-1 after two, with the final score ending up 9-2. The team did some good things, but needs to clean up its own end and quit turning the puck over. Overall, they did enough to keep the streak alive and also have some fun. Leading the way were Kale Plotnikoff with two goals and two assists, Shayne Walker with two goals and an assist, and Etienne Boutet with three assists. Starting with the Trail tournament this coming weekend, the team has 17 games lined up from now until end of first weekend of March, which should have them ready for provincials being held in Creston. •The first weekend in January, the Creston Valley Minor Hockey Association’s bantam rep Chiefs hosted a tournament. Five teams travelled to the Creston Valley, including High River, Elk Valley, Invermere, Spokane and Lethbridge. The boys started the play Friday afternoon with a tough loss, giving a shutout to Invermere. Matthew Armitage was starting goaltender and didn’t disappoint, allowing only one goal. On the Friday evening, the boys battled hard but came up short with a final score of 7-5 against High River. Cole Bright was starting goaltender. Creston buried three goals in the first, by Ethan Plotnikoff assisted by Brody Ryan, Jake Kolodychuk assisted by Plotnikoff and Tyler Everitt, and Jake Livingstone assisted by Hunter Smeaton. Two second-period goals were scored, the first by Ryan assisted by Plotnikoff, and Plotnikoff, with his fourth point of the game, assisted by Kolodychuk. On Jan. 5, the team faced Spokane and found a win and a shutout for starting goaltender Bright with a final score of 6-0. Four goals for Creston were scored by Plotnikoff with assists by Everitt, Livingstone, Kolodychuk, Ryan and Alex Blackmore. Creston’s two other goals were scored by Kenton Blackmore assisted by Ryan and Plotnikoff, and Jordon Wood, unassisted. That afternoon, the team was back at it against Lethbridge, which put two on the board in the first period, but Creston answered in the second, scoring two. The first goal was by Kolodychuk assisted by Livingstone and starting goaltender Armitage. Six minutes later, Livingstone sniped, with assists going to Vinson Blackmore and Ryan. In a tense third period, despite Lethbridge’s best efforts, only one

goal was scored and it was the game winner for Creston, by Alex assisted by Wood. On Jan. 6, Creston played an early game against one of the tournament’s top team, Elk Valley, and won with a final of 3-2. Creston’s first goal was scored by Plotnikoff, assisted by Livingstone and Kolodychuk. Less than a minute later, Livingstone scored another, assisted by Plotnikoff and Everitt. With two minutes remaining in this exciting game, Livingstone scored his second goal and the game-winner with an assist from Plotnikoff. Armitage was the starting goaltender. Elk Valley took first place in the tournament, with Invermere placing second. Third went to Lethbridge followed by the Creston Chiefs in fourth. High River followed in fifth, leaving Spokane in last place. •On Jan. 18, the bantam rep team travelled to Princeton to compete in the Princeton and District Minor Hockey Association 2013 bantam Tier 3 Tournament. On Friday evening, the boys faced Mission in their first of four games of the weekend. Matthew Armitage was starting goaltender. After a scoreless first period, Creston put three on the board in the second. The first was scored unassisted by Hunter Smeaton. Alex Blackmore was next up, assisted by Kenton Blackmore, followed by another unassisted goal by Brody Ryan. In the third period, Mission scored with 13 minutes on the clock. Ethan Plotnikoff answered with a fourth goal for Creston minutes later, assisted by Jordan Wood. A final score of 4-1 gave the boys a great start. On Saturday afternoon, Creston battled West Vancouver and lost 5-4. Goals for Creston were scored by Plotnikoff, assisted by Ryan and Tyler Everitt, and a hat trick by Jacob Kolodychuk, with assists to Ryan and Plotnikoff. Goaltending was shared by Armitage and Cole Bright. Later on Saturday, the boys faced another loss against the strong South Okanagan team, with a final score of 8-1. Creston’s only goal was scored by Kenton Blackmore assisted by Everitt. Goaltending was shared by Armitage and Bright. On Sunday morning, the boys showed up to play, ending the tournament with a well deserved win against Aldergrove. Ryan scored a hat trick with an unassisted goal in the first period, and a goal each in the second and third, both assisted by Plotnikoff. Kolodychuk buried four goals, assisted by Alex Blackmore, Levi Palmer, Kenton Blackmore, Jake Livingstone and Smeaton. Plotnikoff also scored assisted by Armitage, as did Levi Palmer assisted by Kolodychuck. With two minutes remaining, Aldergrove scored their first and only of the game, giving a final score of 9-1. Goaltending was shared by Armitage and Bright.

Sasquatch hosting jazz quartet, electronic solo act SUBMITTED

Stuart McRorie Tait’s live solo musical performance, McRorie, uses unique and innovative electronic instruments to perform a variety of musical styles and originals in realtime. Using the skill and technique of “co-ordinated independence”, McRorie performs the multiple parts of a musical composition live. Tait was born in Edmonton, where his family owned and operated a music school and store. Being immersed in music from an early age, he learned to play drums, vibes and accordion, sing vocals and even took tap lessons. In his teens, Tait sold drums at the store and taught drum lessons at the music school. He performed in concerts with his family, sang tenor in the church choir and also became the percussionist in a youth symphony. It was his love for polyrhythms that would lead to the study of advanced techniques for the modern drummer called coordinated independence. Mastering this technique allowed him to play more than one rhythm at once. This skill in combination with an innate ability and desire to focus and complete his own form of musical expression would later become an asset in which he could evolve and complete his own unique form of musical endeavors and ideas. Tickets to the Jan. 26 show are $10 at Black Bear Books or

After 10 years in the Vancouver music scene before moving to Toronto in 2009, Childs has built an international career as a performer, and is highly regarded for his deep swing feel, sensitivity, versatility and musicality, as well as his reverence for jazz history and wide-ranging musical vocabulary. His current group features three musicians from Toronto with equally impressive pedi-

grees: multi-award-winning saxophonist Kelly Jefferson, former Boss Brass pianist Dave Restivo and one of Toronto’s most indemand bassists, Jon Maharaj. Their blend of sophistication and soul is a rare and unique treat! In 2009, Childs won the Grand Prix du Jazz at the Montreal Jazz Festival, with pianist Amanda Tosoff’s acclaimed quartet. He returned to Montreal in 2012 and won the award again with legendary HungarianCanadian pianist Robi Botos. He is one of only a handful of musicians to win the award twice in its 35-year history. Tickets are $15 in advance at Black Bear Books or Kingfisher Used Books, and $18 at the door, which opens at 6 p.m.; the show starts at 7.

World in our hands

From page 8 Following Jesus, more and more people are integrating care for the poor, the fight against social injustices and stewardship of God’s creation into a dynamic Christian spirituality. We care for creation in obedience to the Holy Christian Scriptures. When Christians act against their own story, arguing that the Bible supports exploitation, they should be challenged biblically. The “rule” of Genesis 1:26 is loving stewardship, not ruthless domination. God created this amazing world and gave humans responsibility, under him, to nurture and sustain it. God is so committed to creation that he became part of his creation in Jesus. God will not abandon it. And while we have messed things up, we are still responsible and response-able. As Christians, we must partner with others concerned with creation, confident that we are being faithful as our Creator’s earth-keeping images. If you are a Christian, what keeps you from faithful stewardship of God’s creation? Have you been reading your Bible obediently or evasively? If you are of another faith or no faith, are you willing to read up on the Christian basis of creation care and then challenge your Christian friends from their own scriptures? Bringing this out in the open may make for some interesting conversations! I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and Earth. And I believe God placed his precious and yet broken and groaning world into our hands. God hasn’t taken that responsibility back; we are still God’s Earth keepers. It’s time to be the loving caretakers God created us to be, to God’s glory and for the sake of God’s good Earth. Obituaries Lloyd Eliot Ibbitson Lloyd Eliot Ibbitson passed away at Creston Valley Hospital on January 8, 2013 at the age of 84.

Lloyd came to the Creston Valley with his parents from North Battleford, SK in 1933. After receiving his education at Creston Valley High School, he enrolled at the Molar School in Vancouver to learn the barbering trade. He spent his apprenticeship under his father in Creston and eventually took over the shop. He retired in 1997 after working for 52 years. The atmosphere at Lloyd's Barber Shop was friendly and often humourous. It was a well known main street gathering place for people from all walks of life. As a youth, Lloyd was a trumpet player who, as a member of the C.V. H. S. band, participated in some of the local Blossom Festival parades. While growing up he and his brother raised and sold raspberries on an acreage where lbbitson Street is now located. In 1947 he married Marie Seitz of Medicine Hat, a quiet artistic lady who was well known for her homemaking abilities. Lloyd was a skilled orchardist, having learned the art of pruning, grafting and other aspects of fruit management from his mentor Lyle Kemp, a once local fruit grower. For many years Lloyd grew Rob Roy apples and cherries on his hobby farm on Devon Road. He was also an ardent Àsherman who spent many hours Àshing in his boat on Kootenay Lake with his father Roy, son Don and grandson Jason. Lloyd will be remembered for his humour and his stories of the early days of Creston. He was a witness to the widening of Canyon Street circa 1947. He said the workmen who moved the buildings were so skillful that he was able to keep on working as the shop was jacked up and moved backward with little discernable movement during the operation. Lloyd was predeceased by his parents, brother Bobby, wife Marie and son-in-law Slim Charman. He is survived by sister Noretta (Keith), Crawford Bay; sons Don (Jennie), Creston and Doug (Lorraine), Salmon Arm; daughter Marj Charman, Creston; four grandchildren; Àve great-grandchildren; one niece and two nephews. By request there will be no service. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association, or to the charity of your choice.

Ravenstein, a student in the fire training certificate program, was very happy to be the first recipient of this scholarship. “I am honoured to be chosen,” he said. “I love what I’m doing so having this scholarship helps me to feel even better about going to school.” Presenting the scholarship to Ravenstein was an emotional experience for Brandon’s parents, Enzo and Laurel, as they saw their dream of honouring their son realized. They are grateful for all the help the received along the way. “Enzo, Morgan, Bryanna and I would

like to thank all of the volunteers, businesses and participants for all of the donations over the last three years that allowed us to create this scholarship in Brandon’s name,” said Laurel. “We want each and every person who helped out to feel that they are a part of this scholarship.” Information regarding the fundraising efforts for this fund can be found on the Brandon Salviulo Memorial Scholarship Facebook page. For more information about fire services training at College of the Rockies, call 250-489-8243, email ask@cotr.bc.ca or visit www.cotr.bc.ca/fire.

Freedom First helps local overeaters Maria R. (to respect anonymity, names have been changed) was 65 years old and weighed close to 200 pounds when she first noticed that walking had become painful. A doctor told her she had developing osteoarthritis, a physiotherapist showed her some exercises to strengthen specific muscles and a massage therapist helped her relax. But her pain levels didn’t change. All the professionals agreed that losing weight would alleviate her situation, but Maria had tried that before without any lasting success. She had gone on diets, restricted certain foods, attended weight loss clinics and retreats, and joined diet and calorie groups, but each time she lost weight, she gained it back again. She had to find a different solution and she decided to try Overeater’s Anonymous (OA). She approached a friend, Selma P., who was also struggling with obesity and arthritis pain, and together in early November 2012, they started Freedom First, an OA

group. Since then, Selma has lost 23 pounds. Maria is 27 pounds lighter than when she began her quest for health. Both women are now walking without pain. Every year, women and men spend tens of thousands of dollars on weight loss schemes. They join clubs where they count calories, weigh in or have extreme exercise regimes. Maria and Selma have both tried all those methods, but not one of the methods brought lasting success. Each time the women lost weight, they gained it back again. Since getting active in OA, they have given up dieting, have stopped fighting with food and are slowly developing a healthy relationship with the foods that sustain them. The first OA meeting was held in 1960 in Los Angeles, Calif. Since that time it has grown to about 7,000 meetings in more than 80 countries — about 54,000 members. OA is not just about weight loss, weight gain or maintenance, obesity or diets. Instead, the OA program offers physical, emotional and spiritual recovery for those who suffer from compulsive eating. The inaugural Brandon Salviulo Memorial Scholarship for $1,000 was recently presented to Adam Ravenstein, a student in College of the Rockies fire services program. The Salviulo family has raised over $40,000 so far in memory of their son, Brandon, who passed away in a tragic ATV accident in 2009. With the help of the Creston-Kootenay Foundation, which is managing the funds, the Salviulo’s are honouring Brandon’s dream of becoming a firefighter.

recovery on all three levels by following a twelve-step program patterned after Alcoholics Anonymous. Members who recover through the twelve steps find that yo-yo dieting and obsession with food is a thing of the past. OA is not affiliated with any public or private organization, political movement, ideology or religious doctrine. No membership dues or fees are required for participation in OA. The organization is self-supporting through members’ voluntary donations and the sale of OA literature. This article is the beginning of a public information project initiated by Maria and Selma. They have put posters up around Creston and information packets have been placed in the offices of Creston’s health service practitioners. If you have a troubled relationship with food and weight, Maria and Selma invite you to come to a meeting and see if OA is for you. The group meets Sundays at 7 p.m. at 824 Regina St. (use the ninth Avenue gate). For more information, call 250-4286500 or 250-428-0439 and ask for Overeaters Anonymous.
