Big-time accolades for Castlegar hosts JIM SINCLAIR WKA Editor
Seventy-six out of 83, any way you want to count it, has to be excellent. t r i p a d v i s o r. c o m has rated the Windborne Bed and Breakfast among the top 25 B&Bs in the country. The people who put Windborne in the top 25 are the guests. Of 83 who took the sur-

vey, 76 rated the Robson establishment as “excellent”… four felt it was “very good” and three had an “average” impression of the
facility run by Marc Conacher and Mirja Vahalla at 3900 Broadwater Road. “I went on my Internet last night and
it said, ‘you won the award.’ I just figured it was for B.C.” Conacher enthused on Jan. 17. “I thought… B.C… that’s pretty good. Then I went to Nelson this morning, came home and Mirja said ‘it’s not for B.C. it was for Canada. We’re the 25th top B&B in Canada.’” This is the first such award for the couple who is in its
fifth year of business near the shores of the Columbia River. It’s quite significant given the number of B&Bs across the nation – estimated at 6,000+. “We’re quite happy about it,” Marc understated. The achievement will be something extra to celebrate in the next couple of weeks as Marc and Mirja head for some R&R in Brazil.

What’s New with What’s Old? Souvenirs of the Rossland Winter Carnival greg nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
In honour of this weekend’s Rossland Winter Carnival, a look at collectibles associated with the long-running event. In 1907, to mark the carnival’s tenth anniversary, the Rossland Miner issued a series of postcards depicting various events to entice visitors. They were printed on heavy stock, raggedly cut and poorly lithographed, but they’re still interesting — especially the one bearing the caption: “A hockey match at Rossland, BC rink. The largest skating and curling rink under cover west of Winnipeg. Come to our Winter Carnival.” Indeed, the photo shows an enormous ice surface, miles of bunting suspended from the ceiling and a crowd of thousands. Only problem: it was actually taken in Montreal. Other images in the set were similarly cribbed, with the possible exception of
Illustrator’s depiction of Rossland hockey venue is spectacular, but not accurate. Pictured below, lofty promotion of ski-jumping, Rossland style. Submitted photos
one titled “Ready for the Snowshoe Race,” showing three men with capital Rs on their chests, presumably for Rossland. Another card shows some kids on a sled plummeting down a sheer drop. The caption reads: “A mile a minute on Rossland’s zip — 250 feet of a drop in 1,500 feet. Going some!” A fourth example depicts a ski jumper flying over a crowd of
bowler-hatted men. The caption promotes the “Ski jump for Championship of America. American championship, 106 feet. Canadian championship, 84 feet, held in Rossland. First prize $150, second prize $50. Also a magnificent cup, offered by Eddie Sullivan and Arthur Seagram, for breaking Canadian record.” A fifth card has someone with long
skis and a long tasselled toque above the caption: “The great Norwegian-Canadian winter pastime SKI RACING.” A variant with several skiers reads: “Championship of Canada — Open to all amateurs — Ski Race.” The cards were each spot coloured in pink, indigo, red, blue, or green. A similar set issued in 1908 had the same images and slogans, but at least one addition: a card showing a skier floating above ... well, are they people or shrubbery? It’s hard to tell. The caption says: “Torgal Noren making his championship of Canada jump of 91 feet at Rossland’s tent winter carnival. Championship of Canada Jump for the Jeldness Cup.” (Olaus Jeldness was the man credited with bringing skiing to Rossland.) The cards fetch up to $40 each at auction today. • A 1902 envelope for the firm of Taylor and McQuarrie, advertising the fifth annual carnival sold
in 2006 for $33 US. It promised $2,000 in prizes for “hockey, skating, ski races, cutter races, snowshoeing, dog races, and masquerade,” as well as “Single fare for the round trip on all railways.” • A rare handbill for day one of the 1917 carnival hockey championship sold in 2001 for $99 US. It trumpeted three games: Anaconda (a Greenwood suburb) versus Spokane in senior men’s play, Trail versus Rossland in intermediate play, and Anaconda versus Rossland in the international championship semi-final. Chuck Clark was advertised as judge of play and Nelson’s Harry Bishop as official referee. Bishop, a superb player himself, died in the 1924 train explosion that also claimed the life of Doukhobor leader Peter (Lordly) Verigin. See photos of all of the mentioned items by searching “Rossland Winter Carnival” at nelsonstar.com.

SPEAKING FOR ANIMALS
PETS on PARADE New Years Resolutions
New Years Resolutions are an extremely common practice for humans in January of each new year. The Trail BCSPCA would like to thank our generous donors and volunteers for all the time and money that we received for our 2012 year and would like to express our happiest and best wishes for your new 2013. We wanted to offer something fun for you to read in regards to New Years resolutions, with a animal twist!
I think that the resolution to exercise more to lose weight is pretty much number 1 for most people. Our busy life can often leave the priority of healthy living at the bottom of our daily to do lists, although it is in the back of our minds often enough. This same resolution can be said for our animal family members. At the end of the your long day, Fido’s need for a walk can be forgotten or you tell yourself that tomorrow you will take them out. It happens to all of us who have animals and this year I would love to see your resolution to get healthier expand to your dog. As on owner of a crazy bichon mix, I know that when Brandy gets her exercise in the day, she is far more calm and content. Don’t walk the dog too much? Take it small then, and go for a walk with your pooch after dinner, You both will digest your food more easily and your sleep with be more restful. Adding small changes to both of your health plans can add up to big changes in your waist line and overall fitness.
I know a lot of us also want our resolution to include finding more happiness, learning new things, and meeting new people. This once again can fall to your pets. Taking in a group dog training class can do all of these things. What could be more fun for you and your canine than to do this in a controlled training session, like one you could see through businesses like Barks and Rec in Trail. If money is a issue, go for a fun play date with a friend who has dogs as well. The interaction for your pooch is huge for them to learn how to act in a social setting, and the chit chat you get with your human friend will leave you feeling happy.
Don’t forget about your kitties this year either. While they are often not ones for playdates and walks outside, setting the time each day to play with them will give them something to look forward to. I know my cats really enjoy play with a fishing rod toy. It makes them hunt and jump and enjoy time with their cat siblings and with me. If your dog gets a thirty minute walk, try and do thirty minutes of play with your cats, and you can break that up through the day to allow for your own schedule. The Trail BCSPCA ‘s hope for you and your animals this year is to continue to love and care for each other. Don’t have a pet of your own? Why not stop into the shelter and give our animals in need of homes a few minutes of your time and kindness, it goes a very long way with them! If you have any questions please contact the Trail BCSPCA at 250-368-5910 or by email at trail@spca.bc.ca.
RECRUITING NEW VOLUNTEERS FOR THE NEW YEAR The BC SPCA Trail Regional Branch relies on the support and commitment of community volunteers to continue our mission of protecting and enhancing the quality of life for animals. Was your New Year’s resolution to give more of your time? Do you have spare time to spend on a worthwhile cause? Are you passionate about or interested in animal welfare? Consider volunteering. From cat socializer to dog walker, to fundraising, humane education and fostering, there are positions for all levels of comfort with animals that complement your existing skills and knowledge. We want to meet the needs of our volunteers while they meet the needs of our animals. We recognize that your time is valuable. Volunteering isn’t one-sided. Mir centre to co-host Amnesty International Film Fest submitted
The Mir Centre for Peace in Castlegar will host part of the annual Amnesty International Film Festival on Thursday,
A great time to butt out submitted
January 31. According to local activist Anna Purcell, “These films are really interesting and inspiring without being too disheartening. For example, the film
Umoja: No Men Allowed follows a group of Kenyan women who turn patriarchy on its head by starting their own village - with no men allowed. You will laugh
and cheer with these women, even with the serious social critique.” Umoja is on a double bill with Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, about an internation-
ally famous artist of the digital age who has been called China’s Andy Warhol. He blurs the line between art and politics in his highly entertaining fight for free speech.
These awardwinning films have showed to sold out audiences in several other cities. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door. The films run
from 7 to 9:30 pm on Thursday, January 31. More films are showing in Nelson February 1-2 at the Shambhala Centre, Selkirk College.

This is National Non-Smoking Week, a week designed to raise awareness about the effects of tobacco use in order to help prevent individuals from starting to smoke, help smokers quit and promote smoke-free environments. This year’s theme is “Live, work, play... even better smokefree.” Smoking is responsible for more deaths each year than drug and alcohol abuse, car crashes, AIDS, murder and suicide combined. According to the World Health Organization, every eight seconds, someone dies from a tobacco related illness. It’s clear that nicotine has a firm grip on those who consume it, but should they decide to quit, there are things to support their quitting. Before quitting: Track your smoking. Record every cigarette you smoke, when you smoke, how you feel when you smoke and what you are doing at the time. This will give you a picture of your pattern of smoking and help you identify some of your most challenging cigarettes - the harder ones to give up.

Power up Duncan Dam, so say some local residents NELSON STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser
The president of Columbia Power Corporation says the 50 or so people who came to a public meeting in Meadow Creek last week strongly endorsed turning the Duncan Dam into a power producer. “I think there was broad support,” Jane Bird told the Advertiser. “I think everyone recognized — and we reinforced — that it’s early days. We’ve barely finished a prefeasibility level of work. But their preliminary view was supportive. So that was encouraging.” The BC Hydroowned dam, com-
pleted in 1967 as part of the Columbia River Treaty, has no generators. It’s purely a storage facility, controlling the Duncan River’s flow into Kootenay Lake. Columbia Power is in the midst of community consultation on what project it should tackle once the Waneta expansion wraps up in 2015. In addition to Duncan, it has been eying the small Elko dam in East Kootenay. Bird spoke to the Regional District of Central Kootenay board last week. Regional director Andy Shadrack, whose area includes the Duncan Dam, told Bird he was pleased Columbia
Power is also looking at investing in fish enhancement on the Lardeau River. Waneta hits safety milestone The Waneta expansion project has reached 1.3 million workers’ hours with only a single lost-
time incident. “We’re just so proud of the workers and our contractors,” Bird said. “It’s an extraordinary safety record. As an organization, we’re thrilled.” And that lone injury? “My understanding
is it was related to an achilles tendon,” she said. Once complete, the project, a partnership with FortisBC and the Columbia Basin Trust, will increase the dam’s generating capacity by 335 megawatts.

Rossland author Darcee O’Hearn recently won the Richard Carver Award for her book series Legends of the Forest. The award was given out at the Kootenay Literary Competition Awards Ceremony and Celebration on Jan. 18 in Nelson. The criteria for the award is firstly someone who represents the spirit of Richard Carver. O’Hearn explained
in all forms, encouraging them to use a nature journal,” O’Hearn said. All the information is curriculum-based, and she said it fit nicely into the school curriculum. She does this through the Columbia Basin Environmental Educators Network. She plans on doing a series of six for Legends of the Forest. The first two books in the series, Leonard the Larch and Cedric
the Cedar, have been lauded for their entertainment and educational value in teaching kids about nature. The more recent addition, Cedric the Cedar, is all about firefighting and the importance of letting fires burn. “They help clean the forest and they help plants and trees grow because of the enriched soils,” she said. The third book, which she is working on now, is Wen-
dy White Bark Pine. It talks about White Bark Pine trees and why they are a threatened species. She said she is still looking for an illustrator for the third book. O’Hearn can also be booked to do presentations and readings through Columbia Basin Environmental Educators Network. More information, and ways to purchase the books can be found on her website www. legendsoftheforest.ca.
Darcee O’Hearn shows off her book series Legends of the Forest last month in Rossland.

Trail gearing up for staging of major seniors’ curling event West Kootenay Advertiser
The Trail Curling Club has kicked into full organizing mode as it prepares to host the B.C. Seniors Curling championship Feb. 11-17. The organizing committee of Cal McKerracher, Flo Woodhouse, and Sandra Stajduhar has put in countless hours to make the event a suc-
cess, but as in most cases one element in particular is vital. “More volunteers,” said McKerracher bluntly. In addition to servers, hosts, ice cleaners, and scorekeepers, the challenging roles of on-ice official and timekeepers are especially wanting. “We need a lot of officials for this,” added Woodhouse. “We need about 20 per
game.” To increase confidence and knowledge, the Trail Curling Club will conduct officiating courses, where volunteers can learn the ins and outs of Curl BC’s officiating and new timing regulations. “They (Curl BC) are sending me all the equipment next week, and we’re going to set the clocks up all across here. We’ll
have them (the courses) on a Tuesday night for men’s, we’ll come down if there’s anyone available to time the ladies in the afternoon, and if the ladies want to do it, they can time the retirees, so they can learn how to do it for the next two weeks,” said McKerracher. A full complement of local businesses has kindly chipped in... Continued on P. A20

Community Boundary Historical Society works to keep local history current Shara J. Cooper West Kootenay Advertiser
The Boundary Historical Society has been around since the 1950s and strives to keep local history alive for future generations. As part of its constitution, the society says its purpose is to stimulate interest in local heritage and promote preservation of historical sites throughout the Boundary.
Over the years, it has done this by printing 15 books (called reports), which tell stories from the past. Because community members write them, they often share interesting anecdotes from local families. The books are easily found at gift stores and Boundary museums. Of the 15 books, only three are currently out of print. The society is hoping to digitize the books
in the near future and publish a 16th edition. In addition to literature, the society maintains the Phoenix cemetery – one of the few structures left of the old mining town that was slowly abandoned when the mine closed in 1919. The buildings were removed or disassembled so the supplies could be used in other structures, according to Bound-
ary Historical Society President Les Johnson. The organization helps groom the cemetery so visitors can find their way around. This still means something to the public, says Johnson, telling a story about a Japanese man who recently came to the cemetery and was able to find his grandfather’s grave. Each year the society holds only a

handful of meetings and events. One of its key events is an annual picnic which is held at a different historical site every year. Stories are told about the site and its history while everyone enjoys lunch. This event is open to the public. The society also has other plans for the future, including a postcard book, collector mugs and better access to local historical sites.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week
January 25, 2013
Tip of the Week: Aquarius is a unique and paradoxical sign. As the 11th Sign of the Zodiac, it is represented by the main Master Number in Numerology. Aquarius’s traditional ruler is Saturn and the modern ruler since its discovery in 1781 is Uranus, both still apply in various branches of Astrology. Contrary to the symbol that depicts it, The Water Bearer, Aquarius is an Air Sign. The glyph symbol for Aquarius is two parallel wavy lines, one above the other, suggestive of water, as in waves. The wavy or zigzag lines actually symbolize the principle of vibration and frequency. In turn, these symbolize the very principle of vibrational frequencies. What is fascinating about this is that the scientific understanding of frequency and vibrational wave patterns, linked to otherwise invisible spectrums like light, radio and brain activity, some would say consciousness itself, is relatively new. Yet, the symbol is ancient. Of course, beating drums reveal vibration and as the sign of revolution, such arguments do apply. But, the archetype of Aquarius extends beyond simple physics. Archetypes by their very nature are multifaceted. Themes like Innovation invention and rebellion are linked to Aquarius, Uranus and the 11th House – which are each reflections of the same archetype. So too are themes of individuality, liberation, equality, respectful appreciation of differences and democracy. Thus it represents political processes as well. The disruptive reality of progress is also very Aquarian as are the unusual and the even though it is a ‘Fixed’ Sign. The term ‘paradox’ transcends linear logic and allows for apparently contradictory facts, realities, and/or laws to co-exist. This is the gift and challenge of Aquarius.

The tide is turning. A feeling of rebellion is rising. Deep changes continue to unfold within and perhaps around you. Certain situations that once were are no longer in your control. You sense it is important to work with the situation. This requires tools, means, methods and a plan. Your sights are set on the future. You are focused to make a break for it.
Ambitions to be recognized and appreciated, at least seen and heard, are evident. Your inner voice is speaking loudly and it has an edge. As if motivated from some higher source, you feel compelled to comply. Yet, due to the consequences factor, you must exercise restraint. Exposure to art and culture will help balance the intensity.
You feel the urge to explore new territory and in a variety of ways. Meeting new people and perhaps making new friends is highlighted. Your ideals are peaking and you want to realize dreams. Yet, you are also called to make certain sacrifices. Add to this some measure of confusion about where you belong in the world and the plot is outlined.
The individuality, revolutionary attitudes and actions and/or the genius of others is drawing your attention. You are no longer a stranger to momentous change. Now you would like the flow to activate more satisfaction on relationships fronts. You are ready and willing to push, yet you must get your weight behind things, to be patient and deliberate.
The New Year is well underway and you can see the signs of renewal. Outer circumstances and/or others key players are making it clear that you need to give more somehow. Giving to family and/or to charity is possible. Yet, the call may be to give more to the realization of your dreams. If these benefit others as well then you will achieve a golden mean.
Some cycles ask that we work even harder than usual, like now. Desires to diversify your business interests, services and/or income will increase this week. Taking the initiative to activate awareness and to stimulate the actions of others is important. Clarify what you and what those you are approaching want and need for best results.

A fun-loving and possibly romantic cycle has begun for you. Desires to be close, cosy and intimate are being stimulated. Playing with the prospects includes exchanges of thoughts and feelings. You are eager to entertain more adventurous activities. Create a setting with atmosphere to support your interests and aim for long-term results.
Shifts and changes close to home may be leaving you feeling a little unsettled. If you want to make these changes happen, then the upset will be minimal. Either way, these are stimulating adjustments in your usual routine, perhaps your overall lifestyle. At best, this presents an opportunity to make a clean break with the past. Tune-in and engage.
The pace is quickening. As if suddenly, your days are all filled-up with communications galore! Running errands, paying visits and swinging deals has you on the go. While mixing pleasure with business may be your usual style, your mood is more sober than frivolous. Moving on and redirecting your energies towards new ambitions is ‘all the rave’.
All being well, you got a jumpstart on the year. Hopefully it was the kind you wanted. Now, phase two has begun and this includes increased communication with key power players. Directing your energies to higher causes may feel necessary, in fact fulfilling. Some of the real work includes having faith and feeling confident.
The Sun, Mercury, Mars and soon Venus (Feb.1) in your sign are activating your initiative. There is a freedom cry woven into this combination. Adventure, philosophy, foreign culture and perhaps a twist of the exotic are flooding your airwaves. This may well represent the best window you will have for a while, so take strides to ride those waves.
Beneath it all you are a rare bird. Some may chime-in with words like unusual, enigmatic, and unpredictable. Accepting and embracing your individuality is more important than you realize. The more you do the more at peace you will feel. You just might even lay claim to a reservoir of genius that lies just beneath the surface, or at least distinct individuality.

...to sponsor and donate items for door prizes, and with close to 100 curlers descending on Trail, the Silver City should see a boost in its normally sluggish February economy. The Kootenays Zone 1 and 2 playdowns wound up last week in Cranbrook. In the women’s event just two teams faced off to determine which team would advance to the provincials. Grand Forks’ Teresa Hiram rink with Trail’s Rose Beauchamp third, second Rhonda Lee Bedard of Trail and Cindy Pettapiece lead, won convincingly over Nelson’s Deb de Tremaudan foursome, with 10-1 and 12-4 victories to ensure its spot in the B.C.’s. On the men’s side skip Tom Shypitka’s rink with third Fred Thomson of Nelson, second Don Freschi of Trail, and lead Bill King of Fruitvale curled to victory in the A qualifier, while Castlegar’s Myron Nichol rink with Trail native Rick Brown as third, Terry Kryzka second, and lead Rob Babiarz earned a berth by winning the B side. Shypitka opened the event with an

11-2 six-end drubbing of Nichol, and followed that up with a close 6-5 second draw win over Sparwood’s Ken McHargue rink. With a berth to the B.C.’s on the line, Shypitka took on Ralph Will’s foursome from Creston and tied 8-8 heading into the ninth end, Shypitka scored two to seal a 10-8 victory. After a tough start, the Nichol rink got back on track with wins over Salviulo of Nelson 7-6, an 8-1 victory over Trail’s Rob Ferguson rink, and an 8-6 win over McHargue. In the B qualifier, Nichol faced the Will rink who lost the Afinal to Shypitka, with the final berth to the B.C.’s hanging in the balance. Will held a 3-2 lead heading into the fifth but Nichol scored two with the hammer, then added three enders in the seventh and ninth ends to cruise to a 10-5 victory. Langley’s Craig Lepine rink won the A event at the Lower Mainland playdowns last week, while Rick Pughe’s foursome and Mel Steffin’s rink – both from Royal City – qualified at the Zone 11 playdowns winning the B and C events respectively.

Sports Rivalries and talent are fueling battle between WK hockey teams Jim Sinclair WKA Editor
What would sports be without rivalries? Friendly (and sometimes… not-sofriendly) rivalries are the seasoning on a main course made up of competition and athleticism. It’s the rivalries that put the passion in the performance, and add entertainment value that can boost atten-
close to the top of the league standings. Nearing the midJanuary mark the two Kootenay divisions had combined to enjoy a significant lead over their rivals in the Okanagan/ Shuswap conference and Nelson, Castlegar and Beaver Valley each had a skater in the scoring top-ten: Colton Schell, Stuart Walton and Dallas Calvin, respectively.
dance and success on the field, track, court, pool or rink. West Kootenay junior B hockey clubs are serving notice on the rest of the KIJHL that they’re a collective force to be reckoned with. While the Beaver Valley Nitehawks, Castlegar Rebels and Nelson Leafs battle one another for points, their collective success has installed the trio
Hockey is huge in and around Fruitvale as the Beaver Valley franchise has enjoyed an illustrious history. Longtime team secretary and current board member Terry Jones Sr. was contacted on Jan. 14 and accommodated the request for information on the state of the Beaver Valley organization. “Things are going quite well,” said
Jones from the team office. “Crowds are decent, our players are healthy, they’re all having fun. Our record’s been decent for the last while.” When it comes to competitive entertainment with a little something extra, the local influence comes through in Jones’ opinion. “I think any one of the three teams can certainly win it,”

he continued. “We always have great games. I always look forward to playing Castlegar and Nelson. In terms of attendance Jones indicated that a strong trend is being followed and ticket sales may even be up a bit this year.” “We would always like more fans in the seats,” says Castlegar Rebels’ president Jim Craig, “and considering we are currently tied for the KIJHL lead in points overall, I would have expected that we would be doing better than we are. Currently we are down about 300 or so fans over last year’s number for attendance to date. However, we recognize that with three drawing hockey teams in this town this could be an issue. In essence we have more drawing teams with the Rebels, the Saints and the Major Midgets in our town than, for example, Penticton – a city more than four times our size. “With respect to the team, we are extremely pleased with our results to date. As of Jan 15, we are tied for the KIJHL lead with Nelson, a natural rival and
only three points up on Beaver Valley – another natural rival. In my opinion this division has perhaps three of the top five teams in the KIJHl this season making for a very competitive division this year.” Closing out the executive viewpoints on this topic, for now, are comments from Nelson Leafs president Russell Stocks who spoke by phone with the West Kootenay Advertiser on Jan. 18. Stocks, like the others has a special interest in games involving any combination of these three teams, and sees their positive results. “We’ve always had good success as far as attendance goes,” he related. “But when the race is as close as it is there’s no doubt the fans come out in greater numbers.” Edging closer to the end of the schedule it can only build in terms of intensity. “Going into the final games of the season,” the Nelson exec. concluded, “we should have some really great crowds coming out, especially against Castlegar and Beaver Valley.”
Curling conclusion Continued from P. A20
One team will advance this week after the Zones 3, 4, and 7 playdown in Enderby, and two teams from the Coastal playdown in Victoria will round out the field. Three ladies’ teams
from the coastal playdowns in Squamish and one from Enderby are still to be determined. The Trail Curling Club will host the B.C. Seniors curling championship Feb. 11-17. Admission is free.

Trail party money cut back by $12k Trail staff West Kootenay Advertiser
The 50th anniversary splash for the city’s largest festival may not be as large as it could have been, says the president of the society tasked with pulling it off. Ian McLeod said the Trail Festival Society (TFS) received less than the requested amount for the silver anniversary in
the Silver City for Silver City Days. The city will give the committee $60,000, which is $12,000 short of the group’s request, said McLeod, and that means the festival’s activities will be cut back. “Right now, with the funding we are being told about, we plan on doing the best we can for the community, and we
plan on giving the best we can for the dollars we have,” he said. But the amount approved by council Monday night is nearly double what the society received last year, said councillor Sean Mackinlay, the city’s liaison on the board. All in-kind services the festival had previously requested will also be
given again, Mackinlay noted, including street closures and the use of city facilities, adding in around $20,000 to the amount already being given. The society will be given around $15,000 in “seed money” to get the planning nailed down for the May festival, and trim the actual plan for the anniversary show, said McLeod.
