Six people, ranging in age from 16 to 18, were able to escape a partially submerged Ford F150 4x4 that went through the ice about 2 a.m. Sunday morning, according to RCMP Cpl. Kevin Halwa. Sylvan Lake firefighters, RCMP and Associated Ambulance personnel responded to the scene. When photographed the truck’s, headlight and radio were still on. The potential disaster happened within feet of where a Razor off-highway vehicle went through the ice last January. The truck was finally removed shortly after noon on Tuesday by a crew from Chad’s Off Road Recovery. STEVE DILLS
Fishing gear stolen while McKillop helped retrieve truck that went through ice by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
After helping pull a truck from the lake Tuesday afternoon, Dave McKillop returned to find someone had stolen about $3,000 of his fishing equipment from the enclosed box of his pick-up truck, parked by the skating rink at the pier. The theft took place in the middle of the day between noon and 2:30 p.m. An obviously irate McKillop told the Sylvan Lake News, “I didn’t realize Sylvan was that bad. Somebody’s got to do something about those low life little bastards.”
And if that wasn’t enough, the truck hauled from the lake was parked by the skating rink awaiting a tow truck and the rescuers returned to see somebody rummaging through it intent on stealing whatever they could. “I’ve had enough problems having to pull the truck out and then this happens. It just puts the icing on the cake,” he said. “It just amazes me this happened in the middle of the afternoon. They just steal you blind.” McKillop’s truck has a tonneau cover on it and the end gate was closed so no one would have been able to see his fishing equipment. He explained the end gate doesn’t have a look. “They had no business touching anything. It just
floors me.” “It’s a good thing I locked my truck,” he said. Stolen was a big fishing box with green top and beige bottom. He had about 20 ice fishing rods in a five gallon pail. “Somebody’s got to have seen something,” McKillop said, adding he contacted the RCMP and gave them a piece of his mind. The Ford F150 4x4 pickup truck went through the ice near the entrance to Marina Bay about 2 a.m. Sunday morning. Six occupants, ranging in age from 16 to 18 were able to escape the partially submerged vehicle which still had its lights on and radio playing when photographed by the Sylvan
Lake News shortly afterwards. One of those in the vehicle was transported to hospital suffering from frostbite. The operation to remove the truck began about noon on Tuesday and the vehicle was back on solid ice by just after 1 p.m. Sylvan Lake Fire Department and RCMP are warning lake users to stay off the thin ice near Marina Bay. The location of this incident was within feet of where a Razor off-highway vehicle plunged through last January. There are various ideas about why the ice is thin in the area. One person watching the rescue operation said the area is aerated yearround to keep the algae down
while others have said there are springs in the area. Marina Bay Homeowners Association has been notified and will remind all residents in the area to stay off the ice, according to a news release from the town’s communications officer Joanne Gaudet. “The creation of homemade skating rinks along the lake is strongly not recommended.” The release stated the town “ensures the three skating rinks on the lake along Lakeshore Drive are still safe as they fall under the management of staff trained to monitor the depth of the ice for safety. The town also manages an additional six community skating rinks around town for the public to enjoy.

Poplar Ridge School first in province to earn outdoor recycling bin this year by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
It’s now easier for parents and friends of Poplar Ridge School students and staff to donate to the school’s field trips. A big blue metal outdoor recycling bin was placed at the curb outside the school last Thursday, the latest in the awards won through recycling efforts in the Poplar Ridge area. Trina Sveinson, along with student recycling managers Hunter Roberts and Shaylee Dixon, said the school participates in the Every Empty Counts program through the Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation (ABCRC). The student managers go to every class and talk to students about how the program works, said Roberts. Each class then has its own month where it’s responsible for recycling in the school. As a result, money raised through the classroom recycling portion of the school’s efforts is split between field trips and the participating classrooms for their own use. “That’s why the kids want to do recycling,” said Sveinson, who’s the staff member at the school championing the recycling program. The parent council, under the leadership of BJ Moore, holds a very successful bottle drive in the fall which raises about $1,800 to $2,200, she said. At 10¢ a container that’s up to 22,000 containers. “The community is very supportive.” The parent council is conducting another bottle drive at the end of this month, putting a stock trailer in the yard at the school to encourage people to bring in empties. This, Moore expects, will generate about $500 to $1,000. The new recycling container was awarded to Poplar Ridge School because they’d recorded 50,000 Every Empty Counts (EEC) prize points through the ABCRC program since September. Only six bins are awarded during each school year. They earned one EEC prize point for each beverage container the school reported to the program. Sveinson said each month they fill out a report online for ABCRC
of how many containers have been collected and recycled. This allows them to collect points towards prizes for their hard work. The school also gets the money from the recycled containers. “We reached the quota to win the bin. We were the first out of all the schools in the program,” said Sveinson. “We had double the points that we needed, we far surpassed the quota to win the container within the time frame.” “This school is particularly hard working,” said Alexis Mackenzie, vice president of communications and marketing for ABCRC. “They also contribute to a positive environmental impact.” Taking part in presentation of the new bin were Mackenzie, Emily Schmidt, manager, community events and environmental education with ABCRC, Lynda
Olson, executive director of Cosmos Group of Companies where the school takes its recycled beverage containers, Chinook’s Edge School Division trustee Sherry Cooper, parent council chairperson BJ Moore, Vice Principal Claire Funk, Principal Barb Hanson, student recycling managers Hunter Roberts and Shaylee Dixon and Trina Sveinson. “This is such a valuable opportunity for students and the school council to work together, set an example for the kids of what adults can do, they can make a difference with partners,” said Hanson. “It’s so nice to know our small school can make a difference. We don’t have to be big to be a leader.” Cooper also noted it’s nice to see the school and community working together. “Poplar Ridge is
a real beacon for the whole division.” The school has been recycling bottles and cans for the past seven years and has won prizes previously from ABCRC. Beverage container recycling isn’t the only recycling effort at the school, said Hunter and Dixon. They’ve also been involved with cellphone recycling, are just kicking of a battery recycling program, collect pull tabs to help a little boy in Red Deer who’s trying to collect one ton in order to get a wheelchair, do paper recycling in the classrooms, and have participated in the Caps Off For Kids program through ABCRC which raised money for the Rainbow Society of Alberta to support wish-granting programs for chronically and terminally ill children.
As Poplar Ridge School student recycling managers Shaylee Dixon and Hunter Roberts (fourth and fifth from left) reached up to open the deposit door on a new outdoor recycling bin at their school, they were joined by parent council chair BJ Moore, Vice Principal Claire Funk, Principal Barb Hanson, Trina Sveinson, the school’s recycling coordinator and Chinook’s Edge School Division Trustee Sherry Cooper. The school was the first in the province to collect enough points through the Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation’s Every Empty Counts program to earn the bin. Only six are awarded in the province each school year. STEVE DILLS

Surprise, surprise. “Albertans support ongoing savings, investment in infrastructure, responsible and efficient government spending and a more diverse economy that reduces Alberta’s reliance on oil and gas,” according to a government news release about the results of the province’s Dollars and Sense consultation with residents last fall. That sounds pretty straightforward. It also sounds like what we’ve been hearing. Savings, efficient government spending, investment in infrastructure. Who could argue. We need more schools, highways and support for seniors to address a growing population. What’s not so clear cut were the comments of Doug Horner, President of the Treasury Board and Alberta’s Minister of Finance. “There is an immediate need to deal with our fiscal challenges and deliver on
Albertans’ priorities — this work began well before the price for Alberta oil began to plummet. While we look at every dollar we are spending, we must not lose sight of the long-term direction of Alberta and the vision of Premier Redford.” No hints there about what the forthcoming budget will contain. When it’s delivered on March 7, we could expect from the first sentence that drastic cuts are in the works. But then you throw in the second sentence and, if you understand the premier’s vision, you may see a hopeful light. University of Calgary Professor Ron Kneebone recognizes there’s a lot of sorting to do when listening to our politicians. As a result he’s created a “citizen primer”. “Budgets like this tend to be laced with financial jargon and political rhetoric, making it hard for the average citizen to understand the true state and direction of provincial
Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
finances,” states a university news release on his research. “As Kneebone outlines the basics of how governments arrive at either a surplus or deficit in any given year, and what they do in response to either case, he begins to unveil some unnerving realities regarding Alberta’s finances — some of which are the produce of basic budgeting rules being broken,” states the release. He wrote that between 2008 and 2012 the government reduced savings by $16.5 billion. “The average rate of burn of the government’s savings during this period — $4.1 billion per year — is eerily similar to that during the Getty years — $4.3 billion per year.” (The report can be found at www.policyschool.ucalgary. ca/publications.)
In the past couple of days, Horner has warned that Alberta’s next budget isn’t going to be pretty. But there will be no talk of tax increases, yet. “The first thing that we do is we look to our own house before we dig into the pockets of those in your house,” Horner told reporters.
We can just imagine the balancing act that’s going on behind the doors of government. And we must be prepared when we hear their conclusions. After all we’ve benefitted from this government’s financial leadership without enough squawking to change the directions they’re headed.

Drive the speed limit and bumps not a problem Dear Editor, I wish to comment on two letters regarding speed bumps which appeared in the Jan. 17th edition. In his letter, Craig Little suggests adding an additional lift of asphalt on Lakeshore between the speed bumps. This might have the desired effect but it is costly and disruptive. I suggest the following solution to the perceived problem: enforce the 30 km speed limit on Lakeshore. If those who drive down
Lakeshore at excessive speeds bottom out and damage their vehicles, it is their own fault and not a design problem. If people obey the speed limit they will not bottom out. Why should the taxpayers spend a lot of money to fix a “problem” which is caused by individuals who are breaking the law by speeding? To those who say they cannot pull trailers down Lakeshore without bottoming out, I suggest using Railway (50th) Avenue. A sign at either end of town,
saying vehicles pulling trailers should proceed down Railway, is a lot cheaper than repaving or grinding down the speed bumps. Two additional benefits of enforcing the 30 km speed limit would be increased safety for those walking to the beach and increased revenue from the myriad of speeding tickets which would be issued. In his letter, Ken Somerville expresses concern that emergency vehicles have difficulty negotiating
the speed “jumps”. I suggest there is no need for emergency vehicles to be using Lakeshore as an east/west route through town. They should also use Railway Avenue. There is direct access between Lakeshore and Railway on every street from 34th through to 50th. Lakeshore is never more than a couple of hundred yards from Railway between the above mentioned streets. It can be reached more quickly, and safely, than driv-
ing over all the speed bumps. Rather than spending massive amounts of the taxpayers’ money, the town should use common sense combined with enforcement of the speed limit. Do so and the “problem” disappears. The money saved by not physically altering the speed bumps could be used to benefit everyone in town, not just those who speed down Lakeshore. Kortebaan sprint among events added to Sylvan’s speedskating schedule by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
The endurance of speedskaters will again be tested on the ice of Sylvan Lake with several new events as well as those of past years. A 24-hour relay marathon has been added to mark Sylvan Lake’s Centennial. It will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17 and end of Family Day, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. Henrik Helmig, president of Foothills Speed Skating Marathon Association said they have at least three groups of four to eight skaters interested
in the 24-hour event. Members of each team will take turns skating on a 2 km. track with one hour on and two hours off. “We’ll see how many kilometres we get,” he said. All money raised through this event is going to the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada. Then the following weekend, from Feb. 22 to 24, there are races and tours for people of all ages and talents. New this year is the Kortebaan which is a 160 metre sprint. These races will take place at 12 noon all three days. “It depends on the weather, if there’s nice
weather and enough interest,” Helmig said of the Kortebaan races. “They’re quite popular in Europe and will be held in Edmonton the weekend before (during the Silver Skate Festival). It’s an open event and adds to the fun. It’s fun to watch because it’s so short.” The Kortebaan races will take place on a small track beside the speedskating loop so as not to interfere with the marathon. This year’s events include to 50 km race or tour for men and women of all ages on Friday, Feb. 22 beginning at 11 a.m., the Nutrisource 100
km race and tour for men and women of all ages beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, a recreational tour of distances from five to 100 km. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and a 25 km youth race and tour for those 16 years and under beginning at 12 noon on Saturday. Also added this year are 10 km and 25 km races and tours for men and women of all ages on Sunday. Volunteers with the Foothills club will begin making the five kilometre loop on the lake the first or second weekend in February, depending on weather,

Costumes are as varied as the dippers — some choosing to wear uniforms of the organizations they’re supporting or favourite teams while others add a zany aspect to their performance using various water toys or comic attire. Last year 48 dippers who jumped, pirouetted, cannon-balled and otherwise performed for a crowd of hundreds of cheering sup-
porters set a new record raising $24,859.51 for 22 non-profit community organizations. Top money raisers were the team of Chrystal Belanger and Shelly Garner whose combined total of $5,256 was collected for Central Alberta Women’s Shelter. They’ve been perennially at the top of the list. As a result of their efforts and those of others, Central Alberta Women’s Shelter was the top beneficiary receiving $8,517.50. The top individual was Wendy-Jo Sakofsky
who raised $3,098 for Sylvan Lake Playgroup Society. The organization was second in the beneficiary list. Third on the list of organizations benefitting from the efforts of dippers was Sylvan Lake and Area Community Partners and their Frozen Chosen team which included Mark Lizee, Jackie Schmidt, James Torrens, Todd Prechnau, Andrew Loughrin, Andrew Prechnau, Jodi Hinshaw and Chantel Boos. They raised $2,784.51.

Admirals were in the game to the end despite 5-3 loss to Bentley by Ted Stephens Special to Sylvan Lake News
The hometown Sylvan Lake Admirals hosted Bentley Generals, last Friday night, losing a 5-3 decision. With just a handful of games left, only the first place Generals have secured their position and second, third, fourth and fifth place are yet to be determined. The Admirals have struggled all season with defence, having lost all but one player on the back end from last season. Offensively the Admirals are vastly improved and in fact, have scored more goals than the second place Innisfail Eagles and just four less than the third
place Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs, but scoring goals is only half the equation. Both teams seemed anxious to get the game started as there was obvious nervous tension in and around both dressing rooms. As the puck dropped it was obvious that the Admirals were wound a little tight and the Generals were in full attack mode, quickly taking advantage. Barely two minutes in the Generals took a quick goal that all thought was a 1-0 lead but the net was off and after a discussion with his linesmen the goal was waved off by the referee. A minute late, on a scramble around the Admirals net, Bentley scored with a goal by Sean Robertson from
Curtis Austring and Chris Neiszner. This was followed 48 seconds later by Travis Brigley from Scott Doucet and Chris Neiszner to make it 2-0 Generals. Every Generals’ fan was cheering and smiling, nodding to one another, confident that the Army was going to easily march over the Navy. That confidence was shattered 14 seconds later when the Admirals replied on a goal by Aaron Boyer from Branden Gay and Kurtis Ross and 50 seconds later it was Thomas Frazee from Cody Esposito to tie the game. From that point on it was a battle, neither team giving an inch and both teams playing hard solid hockey. At 10:15 Generals

were on the power play when an Admirals defenseman, in an attempt to clear a rebound, had the puck go off his skate and into the net to give the Generals a 3-2 lead at 9:12. Hard fast hockey, end to end, was what the second period brought. Solid chances at both ends were turned away by the tenders and the battle continued. At 13:50 the Generals struck, this time Geordie Wudrick from Travis Dunstall made it 4-2. At 10:51, the speedster, Jeff Young, broke down the left wing, pulling the Generals D man with him as he headed for the net. Seeing he was at a bad angle for the shot he looked to the slot for an open man and saw Thomas Frezee, the newest Admiral, open and ready. With one motion and no hesitation, Frezee found the net, pulling the Admirals within one. At the other end, Andy
Williams, the Admirals netminder, was doing everything to keep the Admirals in the game and was forced to changed helmets as he took a hard slap shot on his mask that broke the straps. Minutes later a second shot also clipped his helmet and he took a minute to clear his head. With 3:26 remaining, Brett Robertson from Matthew Kinch and Kyle Sheen made it 5-3 Bentley, when the Admirals defence failed to clear the puck. The period ended without further scoring and the total shots on net were tied 22-22 at the end of two. Starting the third period Caylin Relkoff, a new goaltender for the Admirals, stepped between the pipes as Williams was feeling dizzy and light headed after taking the two shots to the head. This was no slow

dance for Relkoff in his first dabble with the Chinook Hockey League. Both teams were looking for the win and had a full head of steam. Action continued at a high pace and the younger legs of the Admirals kept them in the game but the Generals kept everything to the outside giving little room for the Admirals’ speedsters to get quality shots on net. At the Admirals end, newcomer Relkoff had quickly settled into a groove and was stopping everything the Generals had to offer. That was how the third played out, lots of action and chances but no one gained an inch and the game ended 5-3 Generals. “I thought it could have gone either way,” said Coach Jason Stephens. “We played well enough and had our chances but just failed to connect. We scored on ourselves and gave up a power play goal

of international competition between teams from Denver and Sylvan Lake. “It’s such a great experience for our players. This was a game our guys have had circled in their calendars for a long time,” said Lakers head coach Pat Garritty. “Some of our players have been playing the Warriors since their days in Atom and others this was their first international experience. Either way you look at it, it was an experience they won’t soon forget.” The Warriors’ head coach is Sean Caple, a Central Alberta product, thus the connection to the area. They played

The Bantam AA team is the reigning Colorado state champions and lost in the quarter finals at the 2013 USA Hockey U14 Tier II Nationals in Newark, New Jersey. “They only play 18 league games and their games are 14 minute periods with no flood so this was a great experience for them,” Garritty said of the Arapahoe team. singing the Star Spangled Banner and Carly Kennedy singing O’ Canada. Then it was on to the action with Jared Waldo of Zed99 doing the announcing. The Warriors jumped onto the scoreboard two and a half minutes into the game when Adam Anderson netted a goal assisted by Taylor Dugas and Jared Duncan. About a minute later Gunnar Kasha notched the first marker for the Lakers with assists from Landon Siegle and Brad Hellofs. The score at the end of the first was tied 1-1. Again early in the second the Warriors beat the Laker goalie when Billy Bostwick scored unassisted less than two minutes in. Ryan Chambers scored an unassisted goal
for the Lakers to tie the game, then about midway through the second Landon Siegle gave the Lakers a lead, the only time they were ahead during the game. The Warriors then shut down the offensive efforts of the Lakers scoring three goals in the final six minutes of the second and adding two more unanswered markers in the final frame. The game ended 7-3 for the visitors. “We lost our form for a bit. They’re a good team and took advantage of it,” said Garritty. “It was an incredible experience for our players.” “They are well coached and have a very high skill level. Their program is highly regarded in the U.S. and they’re the one to beat in Colorado.”

Operation: Safe Side-Walking! Ensuring a Safe & Accessible Community For All to Enjoy With the arrival of snow and ice, Sylvan Lake Municipal Enforcement wants to remind property owners and occupants of their responsibility to ensure that all walkways and sidewalks adjoining their property are completely free of snow and ice. Snow and ice left on sidewalks is extremely hazardous, especially for those who are disabled or who have limited mobility. Severe injuries and legal consequences can result from a mishap on a snow or icecovered sidewalk. Residential or commercial sidewalks left unmaintained also create difficulties for mail services, meter readers, delivery drivers, and emergency personnel. For this reason, the Sylvan Lake Community Standards Bylaw (1592/2012) requires that all property owners and occupiers clear snow and ice (down to bare pavement) on all public sidewalks next to their property, within 48 hours of any accumulation. Operation: Safe Side-Walking! is all about community sidewalk health and safety. The Program aims to promote a stronger partnership between citizens and the Town of Sylvan Lake to identify potentially hazardous winter conditions on residential and commercial sidewalks. Using a “teamwork approach, the Program enhances vigilance and encourages property owners to responsibly remove snow and ice from community sidewalks adjacent to their property *Sylvan Lake residential property owners or occupiers can pick up free pails of sand and salt from Public Works for their use on sidewalks (Note: Residents must supply their own pail). *This service is NOT available for commercial purposes. Identify and share your winter sidewalk safety concern with us by any one of the following methods: Email safesidewalking@sylvanlake.ca or, Submit an Online Complaint by visiting
