Buf falo Creek Elementary and 100 Mile Junior Secondary schools will be closed at the end of the school year, despite some significant community opposition. School District #27 trustees made their decision on school closures and reconfigurations at a Jan. 22 board meeting, after about four months of public feedback on their Initial Options Report (IOR).

EVERY ITEM IN EVERY DEPARTMENT
Other decisions include reconfiguring Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School (PSO) to grades 8-12, rather than grades 9-12 as proposed in the IOR, which would have resulted in all South End elementary schools going to kindergarten-Grade 8. Trustees had indicated they might move in that direction at a Jan. 8 board meeting at PSO, citing many parents and students polled preferred to have Grade 8 classes held on the secondary campus, as
opposed to in an elementary school environment. Board chair Will Van Osch says that under declining enrolment and dwindling budgets, the board has made these “very difficult” decisions. “I can understand the angst that people are feeling ... I’m sure there is quite a bit of sadness around the school closures.” He explains the trustees “listened intently” to the public and their decisions were “not made lightly,” and notes no single option
exists that would please everyone. “Nobody on the board wants to see school closures, but we are left with very few other options. “While I realize it is going to create some hardship for some students, I think what we have done is the best and the least disruptive for our students. I think we’re doing the right thing in the end.” Van Osch says the board adopted the IOR with amendments as its
comprehensive longterm plan, and the related bylaws are scheduled for formal adoption at its Jan. 29 meeting. The chair adds he is “quite glad” a motion made at the meeting to begin the 90-day public process to consider closing Lac la Hache Elementary School did not succeed. The approved changes will be implemented by the start of the 2013/14 school year. For more information, visit the website at www.sd27.bc.ca.

January is Alzheimer Awareness Month MLA REPORT Donna Barnett January is Alzheimer Awareness Month across Canada, and so this week I would like to take some time to talk about this condition. Alzheimer’s is a degenerative disease. It causes memory loss and impairs thinking processes.
Symptoms of the disease often include loss of short- and longterm memory, changes in mood and behaviour, reduced ability to communicate and think clearly, and, eventually, a breakdown of immune functions. Tragically, Alzheimer’s patients typically die of this disease within seven to 10 years of being diagnosed. It is estimated that one out of every 11 Canadians over the age of 65 has Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. In our province, that comes to more than 70,000
Hockey game raises funds for Dry Grad Arlene Jongbloets Free Press
Some of the funniest hockey of the season comes to the South Cariboo Rec. Centre, Jan. 31, as Grade 12 students take on teachers in the annual Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School Dry Grad hockey game. It’s a fundraiser for Dry Grad 2013 celebrations, and the game is always loaded with laughs when both teams dress up in
kooky costumes and rewrite the rules of hockey. The puck drops at 7 p.m. and there will be an airplane toss contest with prizes, 50/50 draw and much more. Admission is $5 at the door and children 12 years and under get in free of charge. It’s a fun event for the whole family to enjoy, so come out to support the grads and help them make memories they’ll cherish for years to come.

British Columbians living with the disease. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, and it is estimated the number of Canadians living with Alzheimer’s will more than double within a generation. In November, our government introduced new guidelines for improved dementia care, based on national, evidence-based best practices. They provide increased support for doctors, nurses, and care providers in decision-making for people with dementia, promoting person-centred care for those living with this condition. MarketplaceBC.ca launched for region’s agri-producers A new web-based enterprise tool for agriculture producers from 100 Mile House to Quesnel was launched by Community Futures Cariboo Chilcotin (CFCC) recently. MarketplaceB C.ca is a community partnership, including CFCC, the Cariboo Chilcotin Beetle Action Coalition (CCBAC), the South Cariboo Agri-Culture Enterprise Centre (SCAEC) based in 100 Mile House, and the Ministry of Agriculture. Quesnel producer Wylie Bystedt, who was hired by Community Futures in 2011, was in charge of co-ordinating the project. She talked to regional producers to determine what they wanted from the web-tool. Many producers were individually accessing information and making connections via the Internet, Bystedt says, so developing MarketplaceBC.ca was a move forward. MarketplaceB C.ca allows producers who don’t have their own websites to have a page on the new web-tool. By clicking on “Find Local Products,” on the website, Bystedt says local producers who have signed up to be part of the list so far can be viewed. She adds there is information about where they are located, what they sell, where their products are available, if they offer agri-tourism, or even if they are looking for a farm sitter. By making the webtool broad enough, anyone involved with agriculture will “find
a home” on the site, Bystedt explains. Cariboo Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett says MarketplaceBC.ca is the result of a long process, including a great deal of regional consultation and research. To view an online video explaining how the program was developed and how the website connects local producers to the world go www.cfdc cariboo.com, or www. youtube.com/user/ CFCaribooChilcotin.

BC Services Card to replace CareCard
Starting Feb. 15 and over the next five years, eligible British Columbians between the ages of 19 and 74 will be required to replace their CareCard with the new BC Services Card, by renewing their enrolment in the Medical Services Plan. The current CareCard was introduced in 1989 and has not been significantly updated during the past 20 years. The new BC Services Card takes advantage of significant advances in technology since that time, to provide a more convenient and secure piece of identification with enhanced features to protect citizens’ personal information. The new card is more secure, as it includes a photograph of the beneficiary, anti-forgery features, identity proofing and an expiry date. The card can also be combined with a driver’s licence and acts as photo ID – meaning one less card to carry. To get a new BC Services Card, eligible British Columbians can simply enrol when renewing their driver’s licence. People who do not drive can still enrol at the nearest location where driver’s licences are issued. Once a person enrols, they will be issued a new BC Services Card, or a combined card, and will need to re-enrol every five years. Children and certain groups of adults, such as the elderly or those in residential
care or extended hospital care – for whom renewed enrolment would be impractical or present a hardship – will be exempted from re-enrolling or managed through special arrangements. The BC Services Card also provides the foundation for supporting the potential future development of more convenient access for citizens to new online government services. The B.C. Liberal government first announced plans to roll out a replacement to the CareCard in May 2011 when amendments to the Medicare Protection Act were introduced to support the introduction of a more secure card, designed to improve patient safety. To learn more, visit www.bcservicescard.ca.

Store manager Sean Watson, left, notes that for the month of January customers receive Texas Hold’Em scratch tickets at the checkout and there were numerous prizes, such as diamond earrings, watches, luggage, headphones, and a lot of grocery items, won already. However, there are only two TVs to be won at each Safeway location.
Forest Grove Volunteer Fire Department captain Ken Kerr did some finishing touches on the concrete floor at the Canim Lake Fire Hall. Kerr was the project leader for the recent upgrades.

Congratulations
‘HIP’STERS
WEEK OF JANUARY 27 TO FEBRUARY 2, 2013
ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, patience and calm is the way out of a tricky situation. You also may want to keep your opinions to yourself until everything gets settled, which shouldn’t take long. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, though you are pinching pennies that doesn’t mean you cannot make a purchase that will benefit the household. Make a budget to learn how to spend wisely.
Palo Bolletti
Stephane Messner/100 Mile House and Palo Bolletti/Lone Butte each won a pair of tickets to the Tragically Hip and dinners for two from the Red Rock Grill.
GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 You may need to subscribe to a new way of thinking, Gemini. The way you have been doing things lately is not working out too well. Ask a family member for advice. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, it can be easy to get into a routine and then in a rut. Try switching up just one thing from your daily tasks, and it could provide a breath of fresh air. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, take advantage of the many opportunities for you to meet new people and forge new friendships this week. You may just meet someone who changes your life. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, too much of a good thing can make it difficult to focus on other tasks and responsibilities. Make the effort to stay focused so you don’t find yourself falling behind. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, you will likely find yourself in a domestic groove over the next few days. Get creative in the kitchen, straighten up the abode and do some decorating. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, don’t allow your emotions to get the best of you during a disagreement this week. Be sure to gather all of the facts before you form an opinion.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, this is the perfect week to correct any wrong impressions you might have made. Be overly generous with all the people you meet. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, speak up if you don’t like the way something is being done. Change can’t happen if you don’t voice your opinion, so overcome your reservations.
HOW TO PLAY: Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 only once. Each 3x3 box is outlined with a darker line. You already have a few numbers to get you started. Remember: You must not repeat the numbers 1 through 9 in the same line, column or 3x3 box.
AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, if you want to broaden your horizons you will have to explore beyond your comfort zone. It may not always be comfortable, but it can be adventurous. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, you have many questions, but not enough answers are coming your way. Delve a little deeper this week.

Passion for skiing results Whatever You Need in Forest Grove ski hill
Free Press Classifieds Have It!
By Marianne Van Osch In the 1950s and ’60s, Forest Grove was in its heyday. It was a bustling community where many small sawmills were thriving. Ranches nestled in open areas and hunters and fishermen found their way into lodges and camps along the lakes. Around this time, a young man began a unique project. Dick Larsen had been a skier since his childhood on a farm south of Kamloops. His father made his first pair of skis from barrel staves that he steamed and bent at one end. They were tied to the boy’s boots with leather straps. Dick loved to ski on the hills around the farm. When he moved to Forest Grove later on, the nearest ski hill was in Williams Lake. The ambitious young man decided to build his own. At the bottom of the hill on Canim Hendrix Highway, just outside of the Grove, is a narrow valley known as Hood’s Hollow. The road dips down to a bridge over Bridge Creek. A little further on, the old Forest Grove Road turns to the right. Directly ahead is the hill where Dick built his ski run. In the summer of 1962, he cut trees from the site using John Hood’s CAT to haul brush. Later, Louis Judson’s CAT was used to level the base of the slope. The first winter the ski hill was in action, Dick and his friends skied happily down the hill but had to trudge all the way back up to the top after each run. Dick decided to upgrade his operation with an ingenious power-driven towrope. He bought a 1952 Plymouth for $75 in Kamloops. Although barely drivable, he managed to get it home to the Grove. He cut off the body behind the driver’s seat. The right rear wheel became the rope drive drum. Next he ran 1,200 feet of rope to the top of the hill, where he had installed idle wheels, made from car wheels. A winch at the top anchored the rope. The 600-foot ski hill was a great success with local youth. Dick recalls the Henderson kids being avid skiers. Ski clothes and equipment were a far cry from what they are now but everyone made do with what they had. At the end of the first winter, Dick disassembled the machinery for storage. By the second year, Dick’s ski hill had attracted the attention of skiers in 100 Mile House. An excellent hill for skiing was

Since the towrope was now equipment. in two sections, a safety gate was constructed to shunt skiers to the side at the junction of the ropes, Dick explains. “There was a phenomenal amount of spindles and wheels involved in that structure. A governor was put in to regulate the speed of the wheels.” By this time, skiing had become very popular around 100 Mile. A 300-foot run was built at 112 Mile by enthusiasts from Lac La Hache. In 1970, the Ainsworth Lumber Company enlarged the 100 Mile ski area and put in a T-bar. Dick’s machinery and ropes were sold to a group in Clinton and set up on a hill across the valley from the town.
For 38 years, Dick has been the owner/operator of Larsen’s Truck Service on Exeter Road. Once in a while, the old 100 Mile skiing days comes up in conversations. The town hill can still be seen directly across from the pull out on the highway above Bridge Creek Ranch. Young trees have filled in much of the hill. Looking up at Dick’s original ski hill in Hood’s Hollow today, one can imagine the hard work and determination that went into clearing the slope and hauling gear to the top. All that remains is a barely discernible path through the trees and the story of how a young man’s passion for skiing resulted in the first ski hill in the area.

Business confidence down slightly
British Columbia’s small business confidence fell slightly in December, dropping to 65.0 from 67.1 in November. However, it was still above October’s 64.7, while the Canadian average remained virtually unchanged at 62.6. B.C. fell back from third to fourth place nationally in terms of small business confidence, behind Newfoundland and Labrador, Saskatchewan and Alberta. When asked to characterize the current state of their business, 33 per cent of respondents answered “good versus 55 per cent who replied “satisfactory and only 12 per cent who responded with “bad.
More highlights: •Seventy-one per cent of B.C. employers do not plan to make changes to full-time employment levels, while 20 per cent plan to increase them and nine per cent plan to reduce them. • Taxes and regulations remained the biggest cost pressure, chosen by 61 per cent of respondents, followed by wages. • Forty-four per cent of B.C. small businesses say insufficient domestic demand is their main operating challenge, with the shortage of
skilled labour the next most common choice. The national report, including a comparison

100 Mile Midget Milers captain Mike Montgomery, left back, and Damian Lindberg, right back, created a wall of defence against Cougars attacker Parker Dowhy in their Jan. 12 game at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre in 100 Mile House.
Cougars get by Milers in showdown Arlene Jongbloets Free Press
Mayvin Midget Rep Milers hosted Prince George Cougars Tier 3 squad in a couple of games at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre, Jan. 12-13. Both contests ended in losses for the Milers with Saturday’s match ending 8-4 for the Cougars and Sunday’s game finishing in a 7-1 victory for the visitors.
Milers Brayden Sanford opened up the scoring in game 1, potting a goal midway through the first period. The Milers then turned it into a brief 2-0 lead early in the second frame on a goal from Emmett Collins. By the end of the period, the teams were deadlocked at threes after a goal from Milers captain Mike Montgomery evened it up.
100 Mile took the lead once again in the opening minute of the third period with another marker from Sanford, but it was short-lived as the Cougars hammered home five consecutive goals for the win. In game 2, the Cougars dominated from the start with two unanswered goals in the first period. Adrianna Johnson notched one for the Milers in the sec-
ond frame, but that was the only puck to make it past the Cougars goaltender.
