Who can plan Canada Day? July 1 in Limbo after Sunrise Rotary announces it can no longer organize annual celebration
SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff
Cranbrook may not have Canada Day celebrations this year. Sunrise Rotary notified the City of Cranbrook Leisure Services in December that it could no longer take on organizing the annual event. In recent years, the Canada Day party was held at Moir Park. There was live entertainment, vendors, and a giant birthday cake prepared by the Sam Steele youth ambassadors. The eve-
ning was capped off by a spectacular fireworks display. But the future of the celebration is up in the air after Cranbrook’s Sunrise Rotary Club decided not to plan the event this year. “The decision wasn’t taken lightly. I’ve been the main organizer on it for the past three years and it’s a great event,” said Frank Vanden Broek, past president of Sunrise Rotary. Planning for Canada Day involves applying for several grants, Van-
den Broek explained. Grants usually come from the City of Cranbrook, Columbia Basin Trust, and the federal Canadian Heritage – Celebrate Canada fund. But Vanden Broek said some of that allocation doesn’t come through until the last minute. “Some of the grants, we don’t know for sure whether we have received them or how much we have received until June,” he said.

Security fright for breast cancer survivor Local woman upset that U.S. airport security patted her down despite a double mastectomy

RETURN OF THE MAPLE MAN: Grade 1 students Hallie Harris and Sierra Daignault lead their class down the line of dancers at T.M. Roberts Elementary School on January 24. The students were visited by the Maple Man — René Turmel (far back against the wall), who told the students about traditional maple syrup harvesting and French Canadian culture. He later showed the students a few dance steps and finished things off with tasty maple taffy for every student.
A Cranbrook breast cancer survivor is crying foul after an experience at Spokane airport that has upset her deeply. Still undergoing chemotherapy, Lynn Haskin is recovering from her second battle with breast cancer, and she had a second mastectomy in November 2011. She is set to have breast reconstruction surgery next month Earlier in January, Lynn and her husband were travelling to Phoenix for a conference
from Spokane, Washington. Lynn was braced to go through airport security, she says. “They have full body scanners. I had heard about these scanners and how if you have a ‘void’ you may have to be patted down. So I wore a shirt with no bra so they could see that I didn’t have anything there,” Lynn says. However, after Lynn went through the scanner, a female Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer ap-
proached and said Lynn would have to submit to a pat-down. “I didn’t want to be patted down, that’s why I specifically didn’t wear a bra,” Lynn says. “I explained to her that I have had a mastectomy and there is nothing there. She said, ‘Well, it’s procedure. I have to pat you down.’ At this point in time, I really have no choice. I’m going somewhere, I have to be patted down obviously.”

For the first time, British Columbia is marking a statutory holiday deep in the heart of winter. Family Day in B.C. is on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, and Fort Steele Heritage Town is inviting all and sundry to celebrate the long weekend on a golden winter’s day on the premises. On Sunday, Feb. 10, a full slate of events is planned at Fort Steele, starting at 11 a.m. The ever popular sleigh rides will be happening through those vintage streets (by donation, and weather permitting), and the spacious outdoor skating rink will be open. A family-style lunch will be served at the International Hotel, and hot apple cider and fresh baked goods at the Lambi House. The International Hotel is also the site of Valentine cookie decorating ($2 each), in advance of another special day coming up later in the week. There will be bonfires, and much more. Not everyone is aware that Fort Steele is open all year round — here’s a good opportunity to take in the joy of a Canadian winter. Admission is by donation. First Family Day On January 10, 2011, while running for the leadership of the BC Liberal Party, Christy Clark proposed establishing a Family Day holiday on the third Monday of February. Clark subsequently became premier; the Speech from the Throne, delivered on October 3, 2011, said that BC would observe its first Family Day on February 18, 2013. In 2012, a two-week consultation process was held in order to determine if British Columbians preferred the holiday to fall on the second or third Monday in February.[13] On May 28, 2012, it was announced that Family Day would be observed on the second Monday in February each year, starting February 11, 2013.

Dave Quinn, a member of the Canadian Avalanche Association and local Avalanche Skills Training course provider accepts a cheque for $2,600 on behalf of the Canadian Avalanche Center’s Public Education Program from The Choice owner Mike Peabody. “Donations like this are critical for the Canadian Avalanche Centre to continue with the public avalanche bulletins and public education and outreach programs, all of which are critical foundations for public safety in the backcountry,” said Quinn.

Townsman readers Fred and Rose Stevens shared this photo from a family album picturing their tour through Cranbrook, Tasmania on April 12, 1998, after reading Wednesday’s story about the new Cranbrook. The list of fellow Cranbrooks has also grown, with historian Dave Humphrey adding in another Cranbrook already in Devon, England, which features the Cranbrook Castle. In London, there is a part of London called Cranbrook. Followers of the U.S. election might remember the Cranbrook School attended by none-other than Mitt Romney. There are actually four schools sharing the Cranbrook name in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
Canada Day needs organizers Continued from page 1 “So that has caused me a lot of sleepless nights over the past few years. If the grant didn’t come through, our Rotary Club would be on the hook for it.” The fireworks alone, Vanden Broek explained, cost $8,000 last year. “It’s just that funding hanging out there has been a nagging
issue,” he said. “We commit to musicians and to a stage and tent rentals – all this stuff has to be lined up ahead of time.” Vanden Broek said after hearing that Sunrise Rotary was bowing out, the City’s Leisure Services department offered to underwrite the outstanding grants.
But still, Rotary’s time was up. “Unfortunately, we’ve moved on and we’ve got a couple of other projects that we are looking at,” said Vanden Broek. If you represent a community group interested in taking over the Canada Day organization, please contact Leisure Services at 250-489-0220.
Bridging the gap S a lly MacD on al d Townsman Staff
Cranbrook is in the process of replacing four park bridges, three in Kinsmen Park and one in Idlewild Park. At Idlewild, the main bridge at the east end of the lake has been removed. The new bridge will be installed within the next two weeks. Three bridges in Kinsmen Park are being replaced, set to be completed by summer. The first to go was a bridge by St. Mary’s Catholic School, next to the playground. It was removed in mid-October and has already been replaced. The bridge is usable, but some more work on the asphalt surfacing and landscaping will be com-
pleted in spring. The short bridge over Joseph Creek near Brookview Crescent – on the opposite side of Victoria Avenue – will be replaced in the spring. This section of Rotary Trail will be closed during the construction. Finally, the main pedestrian bridge in Kinsmen Park will be replaced in spring. Because this section of Rotary Trail is so well-used, a temporary bridge will be built upstream of the existing bridge., The old bridge will then be dismantled and a new bridge built at the original location. The project is funded by the Community Recreation Program grant through the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development.

Teachers slam proposed 10-year deal VANCOUVER — The B.C. government’s proposed 10-year contract with teachers is a pre-election political document that aims to strip educators of their bargaining rights as they prepare to negotiate a new deal, says the head of the teachers’ union. “This is not good for students, it is not good for teachers,’’ Susan Lambert said Thursday after Premier Christy Clark announced the proposal as a way to stop labour acrimony from disrupting the education system. “I’m very upset that Christy Clark would try to use teachers, teaching and the public education system, and students, as a political football,’’ Lambert said. The proposal includes the creation of a policy council made up of the government, school trustees and the teachers’ union to discuss issues that have historically bogged
down negotiations, the government said. But Lambert said teachers will not give up bargaining for hardfought rights such as class size, noting a B.C. Supreme Court ruling in 2012 that gave teachers victory over that issue after a 10-year legal battle. “It’s ludicrous on the face of it, and it’s quite sad that the government would use rhetoric of reconciliation and re-establishing respectful relationships and yet quite aggressively and relentlessly try to deny teachers their constitutionally guaranteed right to bargain working conditions,’’ she said. Clark said the 10year deal would prevent labour acrimony from spilling into classrooms, adding a Grade 2 student could graduate from high school without the disruptions that have plagued public education in the province for decades. The B.C. Teachers Federation and the
VANCOUVER METRO
BCTF president Susan Lambert province have waged a fight over various issues including wages, class size and education being deemed an essential service in 2001, meaning teachers could not go on strike. The government also imposed two backto-back contracts that added fuel to an already tense relationship between the two sides, prompting teachers to mount an illegal walkout in 2005. Labour woes that lasted the entire school year starting in Sep-
tember 2011 meant teachers refused to write report cards, supervise students or take part in extra-curricular activities before a oneyear contract was reached. It’s set to expire at the end of June. Clark, who is preparing for an election in May, said Thursday the deal would allow teachers to go on strike and would index their salary to the same increases given to nurses, college faculty and other public-sector employees. “We have signed agreements with more than half of the provincial employees in British Columbia,’’ Clark said. “And I believe that same spirit of co-operation can go a long way to making sure that we ensure a decade of labour stability for our kids in the education sector.’’ The 10-year contract would also provide $100 million for an education investment fund and allow teachers a say in how the

What’s more, after the pat-down, which was focused on Lynn’s chest, the TSA agent also scanned Lynn’s hands for explosives. “I was just dumbfounded,” says Lynn. “I knew it was procedure for her, but it still really bothered me that even though she could see there was nothing there, she patted me down.” Describing herself as an outspoken person, Lynn says the experience was traumatic. “I consider myself a fairly strong person. I’ve never had to go for counselling. This is really bothering me. I’m going to get hold of the cancer society and see if I can talk to somebody about it, because it’s really bothering me,” she says. “There is no reason to be put through that, as far as I’m concerned.
What are you hiding? There is nothing.” Lynn is now thinking twice about travelling in the U.S. “It makes me reconsider it. We are going to a convention in Vegas in August and instead of flying out of Spokane, we may fly out of Calgary even though it’s a little bit farther.” A spokesperson for TSA was not able to comment specifically on this incident. However, she suggested breast cancer survivors visit www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/whatexpect-if-you-arebreast-cancer-survivor to prepare for screening procedures. The website states: “TSA understands that passengers who are breast cancer survivors may have concerns about the screening process. While TSA will make every effort to accommodate a person’s

Education Minister Don McRae and Premier Christy Clark announce their proposed new teacher bargaining structure at a Surrey elementary school Thursday. money is used in classrooms, said Education Minister Don McRae, a teacher who is still a member of the teachers’ union. McRae said the negativity that has engulfed the teacher-government relationship must end for the sake of students. “In the end, even with essential service, there was a 10-day strike,’’ he said of the
mends that, if they are comfortable doing so, breast cancer survivors should let the security officer know. 2005 job action. “We don’t want to, every two years, or every four years, go through this repeated cycle of labour angst. Since 1991 we’ve had eight series of this. That’s too many times.’’ Lambert said McRae wrote letters to the government about classroom conditions when he was teaching. “Now he’s in government and he’s got a dif-
ferent tune and a different story and that’s very unfortunate,’’ she said. Lambert said the teachers’ union has reached a tentative agreement with the B.C. Public School Employers Association, the government’s bargaining unit, to facilitate the next round of negotiations and that both parties will be discussing ratification this weekend. The 10-year deal is a “heavy attempt’’ to intervene in that process, she said. She said the teachers’ union hopes to start contract talks on Feb. 4 if there is agreement on several issues, including the inclusion of a facilitator from the beginning of the process. NDP education critic Robin Austin said the length of any agreement is typically negotiated at the bargaining table so he doesn’t understand why the government has stipulated its proposed contract would cover 10 years. Austin said he’s also surprised the premier announced the proposal just before teachers are expected to ratify the framework for the next negotiated contract and start talks with the government’s bargaining team.

Opinion/Events Sam and Florence Baker and the quest for the source of the Nile
S
JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now
Jim Cameron amuel White Baker. Born: London, June 8, 1821, one of seven siblings, including his brother James, founder of the town of Cranbrook B.C. Son of a savvy and successful businessman, most notably for wise investments in the sugar trade. Intelligent, adventurous, convivial with an unending passion for the hunt. We pick up the thread of Sam’s life in 1861, already a much-travelled man of the world, most recently returned from a long stint in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to establish an English settlement at Nuwara Eliya. Three children and a wife now dead, four daughters in the care of his sister Minnie, and, to the dismay of many friends and peers who have heard the rumours, a new lady at hand. Her name is Florence, a daughter of Hungarian aristocracy forced into slavery while a child. She is rescued from a white-slave market in the Ottoman Empire by a smitten Samuel, stolen from the very clutches of the hopeful Ottoman of Vidin, conveyed to safety in Romania and on to England. Florence is an independent, intelligent, good looking young lady who refuses to be daunted by those who view her as an improper choice for one such as Samuel Baker. She refuses to play the role of Victorian hausfrau while her husband seeks adventure. They are a deucedly good match and together they will travel into the history books as soul mates of the first order. For a number of years Sam’s burning ambition has been to explore Africa, the Dark Continent that captured so much of the English imagination of the day, and so it was, in March, 1861, Sam and Flo journeyed to Cairo to begin their explorations. Traveling up the Nile and later on land by camel and donkey with a small group of natives, battling weather, disease and malnutrition, they eventually reached Khartoum in June, 1862. Following complicated preparations they left Khartoum in December, sailing up the White Nile in three ships loaded with supplies, transport animals and 96 men, 45 of whom were armed soldiers, the entire expedition
funded by Sam. Their main purpose, aside from some serious biggame hunting along the way, was to discover the true source of the Nile, a burning question amongst explorers since the return from Lake Victoria of Richard Burton and John Speke in 1858. The intrepid pair had discovered and named the lake which they stated as the source of the river but had failed to ascertain if the lake itself was itself fed by yet another waterway. Speke and his new partner Grant were already once again up the Nile in an attempt to settle the matter. Sam and Flo were not far behind. Speke and Grant, generally unsuccessful in their attempt, met the Baker party at Gondokoro, in February, 1863, where Sam turned his ships over to Speke for their journey back down the river. The Baker party struggled valiantly on, eventually arriving at a large body of water that Sam promptly named Lake Albert. In poor health at the time of their discovery there followed a Florence and Samuel Baker. KOOTENAY ICE
Ice back on the road to the prairies TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
Whether on the road or at home, the Kootenay Ice are finding ways to win. And not just winning but doing it in nail-biting fashion. The Ice had to erase a Medicine Hat lead twice on Wednesday night, and trailed at one point in all four of their wins during a swing through the East Division last week. Each team during that trip, including the affair against the Tigers on Wednesday night at Western Financial Place, scored first— something that the team will likely want to change. Kootenay is heading back on the road for a pair of games in Moose Jaw and Regina this weekend, two teams they defeated last weekend while in Saskatchewan. “It’s good having that confidence going back there and knowing you can win in those barns,” said Ice forward Austin Vetterl, “but this time we got to have a better start and not have to come back and go into overtime and all that.” However, despite those bad starts, Kootenay has managed to make the comeback and
pull out the win in regulation, overtime or a shootout. “Knowing that if we come into the room down 1-0 or 2-1 going into the first intermission or second intermission, we still believe that we can come back,” said Vetterl. “We just got to keep playing our game, get back to the simple things and eventually it’ll come for us.” Vetterl, who was acquired earlier in the season from Vancouver in exchange for a draft pick, has solidified his role on the third line along with fellow trade pickup Zach McPhee and Jordyn Boyd. “I’m sort of turning into more of a PKer, third-line checker, put out at the end of the game, so I like that,” said Vetterl. “I did that last year, so I’m used to it. It’s nothing new to me.” Landon Peel, Kootenay’s newest defenceman, made his home debut against the Tigers, and while he didn’t make an impact on the scoresheet, he also didn’t make any egregious mistakes. “It was great,” said Peel, of his first game in Cranbrook. “It felt like a home barn and we picked up the win.” Peel is joining a hot team, as Kootenay has
won five in a row and 12 of their last 13 games, after coming up via the MJHL, where he was playing with the Swan Valley Stampeders. Not a bad way to break back into the WHL. “It’s a great feeling,” added Peel. “Nothing better than winning, that’s for sure.” Peel, who was drafted 50th overall in the third round of the 2009
WHL Bantam Draft by the Regina Pats, faced his former team last week, and will do it again on Saturday. “It’s real weird,” said Peel, on facing his old WHL squad twice right off the bat. “I know some of the guys and the coaching staff, but hopefully we can pull out another win against them.” Kootenay faces Moose Jaw on Friday,
before heading to Regina to take on the Pats. The Warriors are mired in a 10-game losing skid, while the Pats are winless in their last five outings. ICE NOTES: Jon Martin returns to the lineup after serving a one game suspension during the tilt against the Tigers. Martin was sentenced by the WHL for a charging major on Jan. 19 in Moose Jaw.
Scott Niedermayer honoured by Blazers and WHL TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
Scott Niedermayer will have his jersey retired and will also be presented with this year’s WHL Alumni Achievement Award in a pre-game ceremony on Friday with his former major-junior club, the Kamloops Blazers. The Cranbrook native won a Memorial Cup with the Blazers in 1992, but was also recognized for his efforts off the ice a year earlier, getting the nod for the WHL and CHL Scholastic Player of the Year award. Following his time in major-junior hockey, Niedermayer went on to
a highly decorated career in the NHL, winning four Stanley Cups with the New Jersey Devils and Anaheim Ducks. Along with his professional accomplishments in the NHL, Niedermayer has also been on teams that captured a World Junior Championship gold, a World Championship gold, the World Cup of Hockey and an Olympic Gold. “Given that Scott’s remarkable career started in the WHL with the Kamloops Blazers, it is only fitting that he receives the highest honour the WHL presents to our graduate players,
the WHL Alumni Achievement Award,” said WHL Commissioner Ron Robison, in a press release. “Scott is not only a future inductee in the Hockey Hall of Fame, but a great role model to all current WHL players.” The WHL Alumni Achievement Award annually recognizes WHL graduates who pursued professional hockey and achieved a distinguished career in the NHL as well as an alumnus who has obtained a post-secondary education through the WHL Scholarship Program and has moved on to a highly successful business career.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Jackie Harbaugh will wear a neutral-colored outfit, still to be determined. Her daughter, Joani Crean, little sister to coaching brothers John and Jim Harbaugh, plans to sport all black at the Super Bowl to show no allegiances whatsoever. “I am wearing whatever fits that day,” Crean quipped. The entire Harbaugh family - a close-knit, hyper-competitive crew that also includes Indiana basketball coach Tom Crean - realizes it has already won big. They got their Super Bowl victory on Sunday, when each coach did his part to ensure a family
reunion in New Orleans next week, with John’s Baltimore Ravens facing off against Jim’s San Francisco 49ers in the first Super Bowl with sibling coaches on opposite sidelines. One Harbaugh will haul home the Lombardi Trophy from the Big Easy. And, no, the family members haven’t decided where to sit for the Feb. 3 NFL title game at the Superdome - or at least they aren’t revealing it if they have. “We are neutral in the Super Bowl, and we are just excited that they have brought their teams to the pinnacle of sports,” Jackie Harbaugh said Thursday. “The Super Bowl is the ultimate ac-
“We are neutral in the Super Bowl, and we are just excited that they have brought their teams to the pinnacle of sports.” Jackie Harbaugh complishment for them and for their teams and for all of the extended football family and all of the teams who have participated in this great game. We are excited for that type of thing.” Her sons, all of 15 months apart, have tried to downplay this matchup from the moment it developed - each want-
ing to keep the focus on the players, on the field. The Harbaughs have been inundated with well wishes and media requests since the moment John’s Ravens beat New England on Sunday night a few hours after the 49ers won at Atlanta. This matchup provides the storyline of storylines, one that will compete with Ravens star Ray Lewis’ last hurrah before retirement and the emergence of second-year San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick (in a savvy move, he had pizza delivered to the overcrowded press trailer Thursday). Fortunate for the Harbaugh folks, they’ve been through this once before - albeit on a slightly
smaller stage: prime time on Thanksgiving night 2011. John’s Ravens won 16-6 at home. “We experienced that last year at Thanksgiving,” Jack Harbaugh said, “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” Jack visited each locker room after that game and observed the “smile on John’s face,” then headed over to see how Jim was handling it. “It was quiet and sombre, and finally I saw Jim, all by himself, no one around him,” Jack said. “He still had his coaching thing on, and his hands on his head, and we realized that that is where we were needed. . And we know we are going to experience that next week.”

MELBOURNE, Australia - Victoria Azarenka had to endure some anxious moments before and after her win over American teenager Sloane Stephens. Li Na wasn’t flustered at all while beating No. 2-ranked Maria Sharapova. The result is that Li will play for the Australian Open title against Azarenka, who ended Stephens’ unexpected run to the semifinals that included a quarterfinal upset of 15-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams. Another player with an easy run Thursday was defending champion Novak Djokovic, who looked like he was conducting a tennis clinic in overpowering No. 4
David Ferrer 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 in just 1 hour, 29 minutes. “I played perfectly,” he said in a post-match TV interview. “I played incredible tennis.” Djokovic will attempt to win his third consecutive Australian Open when he plays the winner of Friday’s semifinal between Roger Federer and Andy Murray in Sunday’s championship match. While Li’s 6-2, 6-2 win over Sharapova, who set a tournament record in dropping only nine games in five matches en route to the semis, never appeared in doubt on Thursday, Azarenka added some intrigue in the second semifinal on Rod Laver Arena. Azarenka finished off a 6-1, 6-4 over Stephens
after a medical timeout for rib and knee injuries. The No. 1-ranked player had wasted five match points in the game immediately before leaving the court for medical attention, then returned to break Stephens’ serve to end the match. “Well, I almost did the choke of the year,” Azarenka told an oncourt interviewer immediately after the match. “At 5-3, having so many chances I couldn’t close it out.” Australian Open officials said the tournament doctor reported that Azarenka had left knee and rib injuries. “I just felt a little bit overwhelmed. I realized I’m one step away from the final and nerves got into me for sure,” Azarenka said.

SAN FRANCISCO An aide to former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said he was so taken by Lance Armstrong’s first memoir of battling back from cancer to win the Tour de France multiple times that he immediately read it “cover to cover” and recommended it to several friends. Now he wants his money back - and then some. Rob Stutzman and several others who
bought Armstrong’s “It’s Not About The Bike” and “Every Second Counts” have filed a lawsuit in Sacramento federal court. It alleges Armstrong that duped them into believing the books were inspirational true accounts of the cyclist’s accomplishments done without performance-enhancing drugs. The lawsuit accuses Armstrong and the books’ publishers of committing fraud, false advertising and other wrongdoing for publishing the cyclist’s ve-
hement denials that he wasn’t a cheat. Armstrong admitted to cheating throughout his career in a televised interview last week. His lawyer Tim Herman didn’t immediately respond to inquiries for comment on Thursday. The lawsuit seeks class-action status on behalf of all readers who felt misled by Armstrong’s denials of drug use in “It’s Not About The Bike,” published in 2000, and “Every Second Counts,” published three years later.
B.C. Lions trade veteran receiver Geroy Simon to Roughriders Monte Ste wart Canadian Press
SURREY, B.C. - B.C. Lions logos were everywhere, but Geroy Simon was no longer a member of the team. As Simon sat in the Lions dressing room at the club’s training facility Thursday, he was officially a member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Simon, the CFL’s all-time receiving yards leader, was traded earlier in the day in exchange for receiver Justin Harper and a third-round pick in the 2014 Canadian college draft. But as Simon said
goodbye after 12 seasons in a Lions uniform, the longtime face of the franchise had trouble letting go. “This has been the toughest decision I’ve ever had to make in my professional life,” Simon said during a news conference. “This is a tough day. This is a very tough day. But in the end this is a decision we had to make.” Lions general manager Wally Buono said the decision to trade the popular slotback was mutually agreed upon by Simon and the club after the team indicated Simon’s role with the
team was likely going to change this upcoming season. Buono also wanted Simon to take a pay cut, the extent of which Simon was unwilling to accept. In an unusual scene, Buono sat next to Simon after trading him. Noting the club did not give other former players such treatment, Buono said he had to separate his emotions from his personal feelings, but the trade was difficult for him. “When I woke up this morning, I felt like I was going to a funeral,” said Buono. Buono said he sat
down with Simon to discuss “the next step” for the receiver’s role with the franchise, and the two sides agreed that a trade would be the best option. “He has to fit in and he has to want to fit in,” Buono said when asked of the decision to trade Simon. “For us to part ways is not something we enjoy,” Buono added. “But it’s a part of the sport that you have to deal with.” A two-time Grey Cup champ and six-time CFL all-star, Simon has recorded 15,787 yards over his 14-year career.
Hamstring problems forced him to miss five games last year, limiting him to 54 catches for 700 yards and two touchdowns. It marked the first time in 10 seasons Simon hadn’t cracked the 1,000-yard plateau. The six-foot, 198pound native of Johnstown, Pa., needs just 29 catches to break Ben Cahoon’s CFL record of 1,017 career receptions. “In order for me to exhaust my talent as a football player I felt I had to move forward,” Simon said. Once the Lions’ season ended, Simon said
he was open to restructuring his contract but if the team didn’t want him back he’d look to continue playing elsewhere. Buono said Wednesday that he had given Simon and his camp permission to gauge interest in a potential trade. “You have to separate the emotional side from the business side,” said Simon, who has agreed to take a lower salary in Saskatchewan. “This is what is so tough, because emotionally I’m still a B.C. Lion.” Speaking at an availability in Regina, Riders GM Brendan Taman
said Simon’s talent and experience will help his team. “Obviously, his onfield play speaks for itself,” said Taman. “But the other thing he’s going to bring is his leadership. His value to our team on and off the field is going to be immense. Geroy’s got some points to prove to a lot of people he still can play. So I think there’s a lot of bonuses to doing it. “We know he’s 37. We’re aware of that, but (Baltimore Ravens linebacker) Ray Lewis is 37 and he’s going to the Super Bowl.”

OTTAWA — A small-town Quebec fisherman who ended up stuck with a staggering $1.2-million repair bill after he decided to cut an underwater cable to save $250 worth of gear is getting another day in court. The Supreme Court of Canada has agreed to hear Real Vallee’s appeal of a case which pits the crab fisherman against giants Telus and Hydro-Quebec, owners of the cable. Lower court judges have had kind words for the selftaught mariner, but have so far refused to let him off the hook for the bill. ``Real Vallee is a good man; a decent man; an honest man — a fisherman. However he did a very stupid thing,’’ Federal Court Justice Sean Harrington wrote in a 2011 judgment. A subsequent appeal court panel expressed sympathy for his plight and spoke of the ``valiant efforts’’ of his lawyer. But the judges also said Vallee was reckless in cutting the fibre-optic line that ran under the waters off Baie Comeau and as a result his insurance was voided, leaving him personally responsible. Vallee, who now is in his 60s, has fished since he was 15. The courts were told that he had no formal training but picked his fishing grounds by experience.

Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am in the process of converting to Judaism. Among other things, this involves eating only kosher food. Initially, it was difficult, but I know that doing this brings me closer to understanding more of my new religion. My problem is that most of my friends, including some Jewish friends, have an issue with my eating habits. They say eating kosher is “outdated,” or they imply that I think I’m better than they are. They actively discourage my efforts. This confuses me because I don’t scold my friends for eating cheeseburgers or pork, and I never insist on any special treatment. Conversion is not an easy process, and I’d like the support of my friends, but it’s hard to keep my head up sometimes, especially during meals together. How do I approach this? Do I need new friends? -- Questioning in California Dear Questioning: Maybe. Your friends think conversion will change who you are and the relationship they have with you. They feel marginalized by your new religious interest and are trying to undermine your convictions. This is all about them and their needs. If you are truly committed to conversion, you should not be so easily derailed. Please talk to your rabbi. If you attend services at a synagogue, see whether they have a social group for those in your age bracket. You are more likely to make new friends and find support there. Dear Annie: Some years ago, my wife and I met a lovely couple while on a trip in Germany. We had such a good time together that we made arrangements for the four of us to take other trips. We kept in contact with cards, phone calls and emails. On the occasions where we traveled to their city, we had lunch with them. We hadn’t heard from them in a while, so I sent a card that came back stamped “Deceased.” We don’t read the obituaries from their city, so we have no idea whether both of them died or one died and the other moved, or what happened. This couple had several children who may have known of our friendship, although I never learned the children’s names. It surely would be nice if their survivors would browse through the couple’s address book and let the contacts know of their passing. -- Miss Them in Minnesota Dear Minnesota: This is a situation that comes up whenever someone dies. The survivors do not always think of going through the deceased’s address book -- written or electronic -- and sending notes to those listed. But it would be a kindness to do so and something the deceased surely would have wanted. You can look online for your friends’ obituaries and any other information that might indicate how to contact one of their children. We hope you find out what happened and have the opportunity to express your condolences. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Too Many Leftovers” about people who don’t RSVP to invitations. It encouraged me to share my experience. Our two daughters were married in the same year. The first wedding brought the same issue of the lack of receiving RSVPs. When it came to the second wedding, I had our new son-in-law use his calligraphy skills to make a nice sign that read “For those who did not RSVP.” I placed the sign on the gift table next to a jar of peanut butter, a knife and some soda crackers. I don’t know why my wife and the mother of the groom didn’t see the humor. I have shared this with several people, and the men always think it’s hilarious. -- Father of the Brides Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Faith is for those who don’t have it all together I had a conversation recently with a young woman in which she asked, “Would it be okay if I just come to your church and explore? I don’t really know what I believe or think, and I don’t have it all together. Could I just come?” We live in a world which says we need to have it all together. The commercial advises us, “Never let them see you sweat.” Our society has a real difficulty with being vulnerable. Some of us can’t admit our need because we want to project an air of success. It’s scary to be vulnerable. What if someone else notices, or takes advantage of us? Or maybe it just seems that life would be even tougher if we admitted that we’re not on top of everything. I know I’ve felt that way at times. Some of us can’t admit we
don’t have it all together because we think that others need us to have it all together, and we don’t want to let them down. We’re not sure they’d love us if we admitted that we’re having a tough time. I’ve felt that way at times, too. And some of us know we don’t have it all together, but we can’t admit it because we’re pretty sure that it’s not acceptable to do so. What would people think? We want to appear to be successful, and so we keep up the front. It’s exhausting work, but we can’t see any other options. What’s the alternative? I’ve felt that way at times, too. Even to think about admitting that we don’t have it all together can be a little terrifying. It’s so hard to ask for help. It’s so hard to admit that our lives aren’t going
Rev. Yme Woensdregt well. It’s so scary to open ourselves up that way. But when we do, when we screw up the courage to admit that we’re having some difficulties, when we dare to become vulnerable, three things happen. First, there is an amazing sense of freedom when we admit the truth. It comes as a relief when it finally comes out. We no longer have to pretend that we have it all together. We no longer have to work so hard to keep up a front. The second thing is that we finally receive the help which we need. When we
dare to admit that we need help, it comes. We reach out, and others respond, whether it be family and friends or professionals in the caring professions. When that happens, we are on our way to becoming whole again. The third thing that happens is that as we slowly become whole again, we discover that we don’t just receive it for ourselves, but we are set free to offer healing and grace to others. We become more empathetic, more caring, more loving ourselves. We become part of the healing process for other people. Rather than just talking about it, let me find the courage to become vulnerable here. A dozen or so years ago, I was diagnosed with clinical depression. As a priest, I didn’t feel that I could let others know of my
struggles. After all, my role was to be a helper, not to be someone who needed help. But it came to the point where I no longer had a choice. I couldn’t hold it together, and my world came crashing down around me. I was clinically depressed, and ready to say goodbye to it all. It was sheer grace that someone found me in time. In the healing process, I experienced those three things. The first thing I felt, other than a real sense of embarrassment and shame, was a profound sense of relief. I wasn’t alone anymore. I didn’t have to worry about keeping up appearances. My dark secret was out. Guess what? The world didn’t end. In some real sense, a new world was born. I also got the help I needed, from psychiatric nurses, family and friends. The pro-
cess of healing could begin, now that I had no choice but to say I needed it. When I reached that moment of desperation, I was able to admit I couldn’t do it by myself. And thirdly, my experience has made me a better priest. I have more sympathy for the difficulties of life experienced by others. I know that we are bound together in our common humanity, and that we are deeply loved for who we are, not for what we do or who we might become. None of this is easy. It’s pretty scary to admit our need and to become vulnerable. But I also know that’s when my life began again. I know I don’t have it all together. And that’s okay.

On Christianity, Religion and atheism The following essay was written by my father George Moody (1899–1988) a few years before the onset of World War II. I found the tiny, yellowing handwritten pages after Dad’s death, when my brothers and I
were clearing out the family home. I offer Dad’s thoughts here as a continuation of the conversation begun on these pages by Bud Abbott and the late ManWoman. Occasional edits are shown in

family wanting. Like most working class children of the time, Dad left school at the age of 14 and went out to work. He got a job as a mould apprentice in a foundry and worked there until 1916, when he joined the

British Army at the age of 17. He served two years in France and Belgium during the final years of the First World War, and then signed on for a further four years, which he spent on the Northwest Frontier of India, then still very much a colony of the British Empire. When he left the army, Dad signed on with a British merchant ship but undertook only one voyage as a seaman, travelling back to India and other Far Eastern ports. Back home in London and now 27, he joined England’s National Fire Brigade Service. His career as a professional fireman spanned 30 years, and included the 1940 bombing blitz that left London ablaze during the Second World War. Throughout my life I knew Dad as an ardent atheist, but never thought to question why he held views so contrary to the norms of the day. Now I know. Peter R. Moody Kimberley George Moody circa 1937
M
y father was a navvy and an atheist, and yet although there were nine of us, brothers and sisters, I never once knew him to try to force his views on us. I used to
say my prayers daily, I read the Bible, yet my father never ridiculed me or the religion I believed in. At school with the rest of my class I have sung “Be Present at Our Table [Lord],” gone home to no dinner — or one of bread and marg — returned to school and sang “We Thank Thee Lord” on an empty stomach, and still believed. Why? The answer now is simple: I was not able to think for myself. I believed as a matter of course in the particular religion which had been thrust upon me at birth. That is the trouble with religion; before we are old enough to say “aye” or “nay” we are forced into religion which varies according to the faith of our parents and it grows up with us, accepted by us as a matter of course, just as much as the colour of our eyes or nationality. [In my father’s day, and mine too for that matter, English law required that each school day begin with a “corporate act of worship,” which took the form of a brief Church of England service with the whole school in attendance.] At the age of 18 I was caught up in that terrible catastrophe, the [First] World War, and in France saw things that should have convinced
anyone that such a thing as a benign deity “who so loved the world,” etc. was an impossibility. Yet still I believed, although it was mainly fear maybe that there might be one, and I should keep on his right side. It was while on leave during the [1918] Armistice that I started thinking. Passing the spot in Stratford where some [many] years ago a number of brave souls were burned at the stake because of their religious opinions, I pondered why it should be. These people, I thought, maybe they were Catholics, maybe Protestant, but they all worshipped the same God. And yet that same God whom I had been taught was all good, all powerful, had from his place on high witnessed this scene and, in spite of his omnipotence and love for all, permitted it. [During World War I the soldiers on each] side had been urged on by their priests, telling them that God was on their side and victory would be for the righteous. Well, as we know now, neither side won and in the next war, which appears mighty imminent [World War II began Sept. 3, 1939], they will still be saying, “Attaboy, you are winning” or words to that effect.

On Christianity, religion and atheism Continued from page 15 I thought also of the time when Jesus was sent to save the world and how unfair it was that he had been put down in that one spot on the globe to teach the people of God, while the rest of the world had to go on believing in their own particular deity. And then I thought if the world was in need of revelation, it is now. Millions of lives had been sacrificed in all manner of horrible ways, many millions more were crippled for life, blinded or insane, and all for what? What a fine opportunity had been missed by the heavenly father to prove to the world that there was someone. I became an atheist on the spot, in a matter of seconds. I had cast
aside a belief held for nearly 20 years without question and in that moment I felt like a man who has cast aside fetters that had been holding him down so long as he could remember. Never once have I regretted that action. Just before my father died he sent for me and my next eldest brother and said when we arrived, “My boys, I’m dying and I want you to know that I’m dying the way I lived. I’ve never prayed and I’m not going to start now.” I answered, “That’s the idea, Dad, I hope I’ll be the same when my turn comes.” To which he replied, “That’s right, my boy, and when it does come you won’t fear death anymore than I do now. There’s nothing in it.” And he threw out
even an atheist turns to God when he is dying that it was quite a relief to me to see my father game to the end. [When I was an adult, my father told me that his mother pleaded with her husband on his deathbed to pray and save his soul. Her strong belief and unwavering faith were my father’s earliest religious influences, reinforced by his eight years of schooling.] I believe now that organized religion is a racket; that’s a hard
his hand in a gesture that one uses in the army to signify a “washout.” How I wanted to grasp his hand and tell him I was proud of him, but we are an undemonstrative family in regard to affection for each other. It was difficult to believe that death was so close upon him. He died soon afterwards. I could not tell him how glad I was that he had not recanted at the last. I had heard it said so many times that

stand a man feeling that way about the beauty in nature – it certainly is wonderful – but have you seen the effects of tornadoes or bombs from these same skies? The bodies washed up on seashores, that the waves have destroyed? Have you heard the [crying of people] dying from cancer? Or seen the face of a starving child who has never known what laughter is? Who is responsible for all of that?

most of the others are apathetic. [A fellow at work once] said, “I can’t look at the sun in a blue sky, the stars at night, or watch the waves beating on the seashore, without believing that some master mind is responsible for it all.
