Bobcat goes on a killing spree, 23 chickens dead By Emily Wessel THE HERALD
reporter@merrittherald.com
The loss of 23 heritage chickens at a local farm on Granite Avenue is the result of a bobcat encounter on Wednesday morning. “I heard a ruckus. The dogs were freaking out,” property owner Roslyn Duclos said. “Normally the dogs bark at the back of the property, but they were over by the chicken coop, so I ran. I knew as soon as I turned around.” The bobcat had killed all but three of Duclos’ chickens, two of which she managed to cordon off in a separate part of the chicken coop, and a rooster,
which was in her house at the time. Duclos said she didn’t know how long the bobcat had been in there, but her friend and fellow chicken producer Katie Sanders speculated it probably didn’t take long. “I would think, the way chickens panic, it would take five minutes to kill them all,” Sanders said. Some of the chickens were still warm when Duclos and Sanders went in to check the carnage. Most of the chickens died either from puncture wounds to their heads or from snapped necks.

Merritt adds 134 hectares to boundary The area is designed to accommodate a boom to the number of seniors in the Nicola Valley By Phillip Woolgar THE HERALD
newsroom@merrittherald.com
About 30 people gathered in Merritt council chambers last Tuesday to discuss plans to designate to the municipality 134 hectares near Midday Valley Road. After about a 45-minute public hearing, council signed off on the land transfer previously granted by Thompson Nicola Regional District, which, until Tuesday’s approval, had jurisdiction over the land. City staff said the transfer is needed
to accommodate a growing community, which is expected to be largely driven by an increasing number of senior citizens. “The population is aging at a greater rate than the provincial average, up three per cent in the last census,” Development Services Officer Sean O’Flaherty said. “There is a focus [in the zoning of the lands] on walking paths, park benches, health services, et cetera.” Each developer would need to earn council approval for

their project before construction begins. Wildfire and geotechnical assessments are required on each lot. The geotechnical component aims to address concerns about underground earth materials. This was a major concern among the public, particularly the availability of water.
According to Ginny Prowal, chairperson of the Water Resource Advisory Committee to the city, enough water might not be available to serve such a vast number of homes and businesses. “I don’t think this has been fully addressed,” she said. “We need to approach that with caution, or
at least with a sustainable approach to water conservation.” O’Flaherty said water can be stored in reservoirs, but further studies are needed to determine capacity. Prowal also said she is concerned about an asphalt plant rumoured to be in the area, though no one could confirm its existence. An operating asphalt plant would emit stinky toxins, but the city only confirmed the application of an asphalt factory and aggregate storage. As the second and final member of the
public to speak at the hearing, Linda Baird said she is concerned because city documents don’t include a map from the Ministry of Mines. “If we don’t have the documents to show it, how do we know how safe that is?” she asked. “There was coal mining out there and I’m concerned about gases coming up from the ground. I can see the wisps of steam rising throughout the winter, and I wonder how much more there will be if the ground is disturbed.” Staff said that
will be determined with the geotechnical assessments. The city overview outlines BC Stats information that indicates Merritt’s population could reach nearly 15,000 by 2030, demanding an estimated 881 new housing units. However, a lower projection of nearly 9,000 people in that same time period would demand about 661 new housing units. The area is designed for residential properties, commercial buildings, industrial and future development.

Bylaw officer and bobcat tussle From Page 1 Tracks in the snow on the coop’s roof led City of Merritt Bylaw Services Officer Bob Davis to believe the bobcat got into the coop through a gap of about five inches between the roof and the top of the fence. When Davis arrived on the scene, he found Duclos at the front of the coop with one of her dogs and Sanders around the back, with the bobcat crouched in one of the coops’ corners. As he approached the small wild cat with a blanket to capture him, the fur started to fly. Davis said the bobcat lunged past him, narrowly missing
his face, and a tussle ensued. Davis managed to get the blanket over the bobcat, and it was almost out from under the blanket when he managed to snatch it by the neck and tail. “It’s amazing how strong that little fellow is,” Davis said of the bobcat, which was about the size of a large house cat. Davis later released the bobcat into a wooded area off Sunshine Valley Road. Duclos purchased the chickens last May after she lost over a dozen birds in a similar incident, though she was unsure about the type of predator in that incident. She spent $10 to purchase each day-old, unsexed
chick, and put time, effort and money into feeding and raising them. Duclos said she just started recouping some of her costs because the birds had recently started laying eggs. But to Duclos and Sanders, the 23 dead chickens represent more than just a financial loss. “We worked so hard intentionally sourcing chickens difficult to find because we wanted to support small businesses and heritage breeds, organic farmers, all that kind of stuff, so we really put in so much time and effort to find the right birds,” Sanders said. “To have to start from scratch is devastating.”

How’s your hearing? Ask an Audiologist. CAT FRENZY Several people said they saw a Rottweiler chase a cat along Coldwater Avenue on Thursday until the kitty eventually scurried up a telephone pole. The cat was stuck for about 1.5 hours before BC Hydro’s Scott O’Laney (pictured) climbed the pole. The cat was scared off and looked healthy as it ran away from a group of people who gathered to watch the rescue. Witnesses reported earlier that the Rottweiler’s owner didn’t attempt to seize his dog, but instead watched and laughed as the pooch hunted the cat. Two sources who didn’t want to be named also said the owner uttered that the cat should be killed. Phillip Woolgar/Herald

ElectroRecycle looks to attract more appliances By Emily Wessel THE HERALD
reporter@merrittherald.com
Merrittonians are encouraged to tweet or email a picture of themselves recycling small appliances or power tools at the Merritt ReturnIt Depot before March 15, during the first regional ElectroRecycle contest. Each picture gets the recycler into a draw for a $50 Visa gift card, but it’s not just participants who stand to win — the program is designed to cut down on the environmental impact of improperly disposed electrical waste. “Small appliances range from things like countertop blenders to personal care items like blow dryers and electric toothbrushes,” said Melissa Pelto, communications manager for Product Care, the organization that administers the ElectroRecycle program. “We also accept power tools, sewing machines, and exer-

the main components that can be extracted from old and unwanted items. The products are disassembled by being chopped into small pieces, then the materials are separated using electromagnets, dense liquids,
current separators or centrifuges. Metal and glass then goes back into the manufacturing supply chain, and plastic joins them on the assembly line after it’s re-processed. Fourteen depots throughout the
Okanagan and Thompson-Nicola are participating in the challenge, and the depot with the most e-waste collected between Jan. 15 and March 15 gets an advertising campaign produced by
ElectroRecycle ambassadors, a pair of university students who raise awareness about recycling initiatives and issues throughout the province. The campaign includes advertisements and radio broadcasts from the winning depot. Merritt Return-It Depot owner Pauline Warren said she’s seen an increase in the number of small appliances coming in since the contest started, which she attributes partly to the brochures about e-waste that the depot has been distributing. “It’s just good to see that people are starting to realize what is available out there for recycling,” Warren said. “Programs like this help.” The depot is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2326 Clapperton Ave. Pictures of recyclers can be sent to info@electrorecycle.ca or tagged @electrorecycle on Twitter.
Merritt celebrates Literacy Week with luncheon A spelling bee and tabletop idea swap are a couple highlights of the gathering By Emily Wessel THE HERALD

The Literacy Merritt and Nicola Valley Society is celebrating Family Literacy Week with a luncheon that will unite the community’s literacy promoters. The free luncheon will include a presentation from Decoda Literacy Solutions and a spelling bee, as well as a tabletop idea
swap. “Our goal for the event is to talk about where we’re headed,” LMNVS outreach co-ordinator Robyn Grebliunas said. “This is about inviting people out so we can hear what they’re doing and seeing what we can do to support their literacy services.” LMNVS started in 2008 to provide reading and writing programs, and since

HERALD OPINION
Too often free again to wreak havoc
There are many complaints about the justice system in Canada. These almost always concern perceived lack of justice when a sentence is handed down in a courtroom. There is often much more than meets the eye when it comes to why a certain sentence has been imposed. However, there are cases — and there are two fresh ones occurring right now in Kamloops — in which it is incumbent for the state to incarcerate people for the safety of others. On Nov. 21, Valerie Brook was killed while walking in a downtown crosswalk. The alleged driver the truck that hit her is a 62-year-old man who was banned from driving at the time of the accident. Last week, police arrested this same man for driving while prohibited — in the same area in which Brook was killed. The man was issued yet another ticket (under the Motor Vehicle Act, not the Criminal Code) and remains free to drive again today, or tomorrow, or the next day. Meanwhile, a trial continues today. It involves allegations David Jennings sexually assaulted a boy. This would be the same Jennings who was the subject in 2011 of a warning from police about an untreated, high-risk sex offender living in Kamloops. This would be the same Jennings who was the subject of a similar warning in Kamloops in 1998. Is there a point at which rehabilitation of certain people becomes a moot point and the justice system decides to err on the side of caution by placing the protection of the innocent above the rights of those who commit crimes? If there exists such a point, these two men passed it long ago and should not be allowed to roam free. This will not happen, of course, which serves as a salient example as to why so many ordinary Canadians are so frustrated with some aspects of their criminal-justice system. Kamloops This Week

Cats curbed by compassion, not cruelty

Quilchena Avenue have. Of course, they didn’t disappear into thin air or morph into bobcats — an impossibility, but not too far-fetched judging by the sheer number of the animals prowling around Merritt these days. But, alas, there is little sign of where about 100 cats (as reported by the City of Merritt bylaw services officer) went. Earlier numbers reported by the founding member of the society tallied the cats at 525, and that’s just the animals housed at the former Quilchena Avenue storefront. Whatever the number, we can be certain we’re talking about a lot of cats. Calls to members of the rescue society weren’t returned when the cat house was shut
down in August. The meow factory was ordered to close because of operators neglecting to obey a bylaw that only allows two cats per household. The same rule applies to societies, the bylaw services officer said. He received constant complaints from business owners, one of whom even declared he wouldn’t renew his lease if the cat stench persisted. Now that they are gone, no one really knows where they are. And that’s sad. Despite the nuisance these cats may have caused several people who lived near the shelter, there is the matter of compassion to consider. But the challenge is providing the cats with a safe place to live, without disturbing them, and without creating a

cat orgy that only worsens the problem. That major problem — as former Price is Right host Bob Barker pointed out on nearly a daily basis for about 35 years until his 2007 retirement — is people not having their pets spayed or neutered to help control the pet population. So wherever the kitties are, I hope they are receiving the care they need, without being a burden to the community in which they live. Let’s also hope that the large number of cats are fixed, so that the problem doesn’t worsen, and so hundreds of cats don’t turn into thousands. In order to avert this problem, “Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered:” Bob Barker.

PROVINCE
BCTF spurns government ‘peace’ offer Tom Fletcher BLACK PRESS tfletcher@blackpress.ca
The B.C. government’s proposed new bargaining framework for teachers has been rejected by the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. Premier Christy Clark and Education Minister Don McRae unveiled their proposal Thursday, calling it a new path to a 10-year agreement to “labour peace” with the province’s 40,000 public school teachers. The proposed framework calls for pay increases based on an average of nurses, post-secondary faculty and other government employees, and a separate “education policy council” to administer funds for classroom support. Clark and McRae stressed that it would offer teachers a formal role in policy decisions, and a voice in allocating a “priority education investment fund” that would rise to $100 million by the third year. BCTF president Susan Lambert said the proposal was shared with her Wednesday, and she considers it a “nonstarter.” Removing

It’s about helping the kids,” Clark said. “I know that’s a culture shift for many of the parties around the table, including the government, but we have to do it.” Lambert said the timing of the government’s announcement is surprising, since the BCTF and B.C. Men’s and ladies’ rec hockey take centre ice Logan Lake wins with some local help By Ian Webster THE HERALD
sports@merrittherald.com
For the second time in a fortnight, Merritt hockey player Dan Post has put himself out as a “rent-a-rec” in a men’s hockey tournament and wound up on the winning team. The latest instalment of scorer-for-hire took place this weekend as Post and fellow Merrittonian Dylan Couture helped a visiting Logan Lake side claim victory in the annual Vipers invitational tournament, held at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Two weeks ago, the 40-year-old Post signed on board with the Grand Pub & Grill Rednecks and helped them win their own eight-team old-timer tournament. A former Merritt minor
hockey player, Post scored four goals in the Rednecks’ 6-3 win over the NVIT Eagles in the 40+ division final game. Despite playing on the blueline with Couture, Post scored three times in the championship game on Sunday to help Logan Lake defeat the host Vipers 9-3. The visitors scored the final four goals of the game to break open a close contest. Marksmen for a weary Vipers’ squad that was forced to play back-to-back games Sunday afternoon were Tom Harrington, Craig Draney and Christian Guay. Despite playing valiantly between the pipes, netminder Dan Morrissey took the loss. In round robin action, Logan Lake defeated the Desert Dogs 7-0 and tied
the Phantoms 7-7. The Vipers beat the Silverbacks 13-7 in their opener Friday night, then lost to the Maniacs 2-1 on Saturday. The semifinals on Sunday saw Logan Lake edge the Desert Dogs 5-3 and the Vipers trounce the Phantoms 16-8 in a scorefest highlighted by Jason Robinson’s six-goal/ three-assist performance for the winners. Six teams took part in this year’s men’s rec tournament. Prowlers forced to settle for fourth place Out at the Shulus Arena on the weekend, a trio of Kamloops teams took the top three spots in the annual Queens’ ladies rec hockey tournament. Leading the way were the Kamloops Coyotes who went a perfect 4-0 to take the tournament title. They
defeated their crosstown rivals, the Jets, 1-0 in a hard-fought championship game on Sunday afternoon. In the B final, another team from the Tournament Capital City, the Valleyview Lions, defeated the local Prowlers 2-0 to take third place.
In an all-Merritt C final, the Krushers narrowly disposed of the Thrashers, 3-2, while the D final went all the way to a shootout before the Drifters prevailed 3-2 over the Falcons. Eight teams took part in the 2013 Queens’ tournament.
(Top) The Vipers’ Wade Fisher (2) battles with Logan Lake’s Dan Post in the men’s rec final on Sunday. (Above) The Vipers’ Jason Robinson scored six goals and added three asists in his team’s 16-8 semifinal win over the Phantoms. (Right) A busy Vipers netminder, Dan Morrissey, takes a puck off the chest. Editor The Merritt Herald, an award-winning twice-weekly newspaper published in the Nicola Valley, is seeking an editor. The editor will manage a newsroom of one reporter and both will be responsible for all aspects of getting the newspaper to press — writing, editing, taking photographs and laying out using InDesign. The successful candidate will be community-oriented and have a serious interest in current events — locally, provincially, nationally and globally. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with some experience in journalism, one who works well with others in an office setting, one who thirsts for an opportunity to improve their skills while helping to mentor those around them, one whose copy of CP Style is dog-eared and one who has a passion for new ideas. Qualifications • Proficiency with InDesign and Photoshop are required, as is a background in the community newspaper industry. • Previous experience in the community newspaper industry • Own transportation required.
