skills in and out of the school; for example, during the animal care spark sessions students will visit local farms on the Island to learn how to care for horses and donkeys. The spark sessions are facilitated by community expert volunteers and supported by teachers or educational assistants. The sessions just started up this school year, and Wolters says they’ve been a big success with the kids so far. “They are thrilled, you know, it’s once a week on Wednesday afternoons, and it is such a highlight,” she explains. “There’s a buzz in the schools, the kids are just — can’t wait until the afternoon. We’re completely pleased with the response the kids are showing.” Students can also do a combination of online home-based learning and face-toface learning at school. The school is open five days per week, but attendance is optional Mondays and Fridays. “We want to give some flexible choices to parents and kids because for some kids Cont. on Page 4

“Big ideas for a little school.” This phrase posted on the Denman Island Community School’s website fits what is going on at the school as it is indeed ‘little’ with only 27 kids enrolled from kindergarten to Grade 7, and it has been taking a more flexible approach to learning in an effort to keep the school vibrant. According to Lucinda Wolters, viceprincipal and teacher, community discussions started up a couple of years ago to see what direction parents thought the school — which faces declining enrolment — should go. “We came up with three big ideas of our central focus, student sparks, or areas of interest, learning to learn and social responsibility,” says Wolters. “The planning was last (school) year — and we call last year our bridging year as we tried to explore and see what we were really wanting to create — and the parents really gave us permission to
take this vision and run with it. “And then we really got great support from Sherry Elwood (Comox Valley School District superintendent) with the BC Education Plan to go for it and try some new things, so it’s a great opportunity to be creative.” Like Navigate powered by NIDES (North Island Distance Education School), Denman school holds ‘spark’ interviews at the beginning of the year to get to know the kids, including what their natural interests are, and then the school operates on sixweek learning cycles. The school offers spark sessions each Wednesday afternoon, where community experts visit to teach kids various skills like cooking, animal care, mask making and building and engineering. Students choose one of the three or four spark session topics they would like to learn about at the beginning of the six-week cycle, and new topics are offered at the beginning of the next learning cycle. New Port Hardy cenotaph taking shape Black Press PORT HARDY—A new vision for the cenotaph in Port Hardy’s Carrot Park is taking shape thanks to the work of veterans in the town. The 101 (North Island) Squadron, along with members of the Royal Canadian Legion, formed a working committee after taking on the project. They have had their plan agreed to in principle by Port Hardy Council, and representatives presented the vision for the site to councillors during last week’s council meeting. 101 Sq. member Russ Hellberg led the presentation and explained that the current cenotaph, erected in the mid1980s, had, “done us well over the years but
the foundation was pretty poor.” Hellberg explained the committee was seeking the district’s assistance in applying for grant money to fund the updated cenotaph, and presented an artistic impression of the final product. The current cenotaph, focal point for Remembrance Day and other ceremonies in the town, would be taken down entirely and replaced by a modernized triptych version. The vision is to retain the cross from the current cenotaph and add it to a new monument. This will be flanked by a monument to the forgotten soldier and a memorial totem. The memorial totem, currently positioned by the Chamber of

The three monuments would be backed by a grassy berm incorporating some of the stone from the existing cenotaph, to give some protection from the elements to both the monuments and any participants in ceremonies there. The project is planned in two phases, the first phase to be completed for Nov. 11 this year in time for the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean conflict. The second phase would then see the site completed by Armistice Day 2014, in time for the 100th anniversary of the onset of the First World War.

Council in favour of direction the project is going From Page 8 has a way to go before breaking ground however, with public consultation sought and a full costing to be performed. In addition, the area’s drainage would also need some improvement during construction. Council was in favour of the direction of the project but stopped short of
committing entirely. “I want to see the whole project,” Mayor Bev Parnham said. “We need to know what it is going to cost us.” Hellberg remained confident that the project could be a success. “We’re very positive we can do it,” he said. “The squadron has been successful in its
other projects; this is just a bit bigger.” The mayor congratulated Hellberg and the other representatives, and told them to proceed with the plan, with the council to evaluate it as it evolves. “We’d like to see it proceed,” she said. “You’ve put a lot of hard work into it, congratulations.”

If you clench or grind excessively, Botox can reduce these habits, saving your teeth and relaxing your Dr. Jana Lamb DMD tense facial muscles. People who suffer from headaches are getting relief with Botox. Also, people who suffer from excessive sweating can use Botox to inhibit the sweat glands. In 1992 it was two Canadian ophthalmologists who first used Botox to treat wrinkles around the eyes and forehead. This treatment has been approved by the FDA and it is reported to last up 4-6 months. Botox treatment offers advantages for men and women. Botox is a purified protein which is safely metabolized by the body. The appointments are short and you are able to carry on with your day as it allows for natural movement of the face. Results last up to 6 months or even longer with repeated use. The CDSBC has approved the use of Botox in dental offices. For more information or to find out if Botox will work for you please contact Dr. Jana Lamb for a Complimentary Cosmetic Consult at 250-287-7343.

Amateur radio a lifeline in emergencies What do you do when the lights go out...and the telephone does not work and your neighbour says that roads are blocked because of the earthquake, or flood, or wildfire? Luckily you have a cell phone, you think, so better check on your family...hmm! Can’t get through, better keep trying. This is a scenario that is easy to imagine and most of the time, yes, you eventually get through, the power and telephone are restored after a few hours – or days – and it is something to make a story of later. But what if it is a widespread catastrophe like Katrina, or Sandy or the wildfires in the Okanagan a few years ago, when many thousands of people had to be evacuated?
“I guess we’ll just hunker down and manage as best we can until government help arrives,” you think. You may be surprised to learn that government help could be as close as one of your neighbours; if they are emergency volunteers. Municipal and district emergency plans form the backbone of disaster relief so that the local emergency coordinator can rapidly mobilise volunteers and direct resources as needed. Volunteers in Emergency Support Services (ESS) practise to run reception centres for evacuees, track family members and provide immediate support in the way of food, clothing and lodging when necessary. In the Okanagan it

If you are burned out of your house in the middle of the night you may find yourself the next day, dressed in clothing supplied by ESS, shopping with a voucher for essential clothing or food and
being lodged free for the next couple of days to give you time to make firm arrangements. This happens a number of times each year and for people, without family or friends nearby, ESS can be a lifesaver. Going back to the

person with the cell phone, unfortunately that time it was a large scale disaster, work crews were overwhelmed and it took some time before help could arrive from outside. The cell phone system got overloaded with the number of
calls and after a few days, the backup generators for phones began to run out of fuel and crews were unable to reach the communication towers to refuel them. When help did arrive there were problems communicating with some areas so they had to wait longer for relief. Hospitals had their own supply problems since it was not practical to keep large stocks of medical supplies in reserve. Communications and supply lines are so efficient now that we expect next-day delivery of all kinds of supplies even if something has to come hundreds of kilometres. almost everything to us. If they are cut we must be prepared to depend on our own resources for some time. Amateur (ham) radio is a new focus of attention for emergency communications since it is the only long range system which does not depend on the infrastructure of phone towers, satellites and landlines. In Strathcona Regional District, ham radio volunteers with the Campbell River Amateur Radio Society (CRARS) work with the other agencies under the Strathcona Emergency Plan in which Campbell River is a partner.
