Main, not ‘Main’ Pacific Highway, or 176 Street, was incorrectly identified as “Main Street” in a subsequent reference in a Cloverdale Reporter story (“Long Vacant, Historic Corner to be Redeveloped,” Jan. 24). Highway 10 and 176 Street in Cloverdale were formerly known as New McLellan Road and Pacific Highway, completed in 1923. Long time Cloverdalian Wayne Dermody points out our original “Main Street” was actually located on what’s now 177B Street. It was named after Mr. Main, a resident, although Dermody concedes that 176 Street/Pacific Highway was always the “Main Drag”.

Theft warnings mount By Jennifer Lang The Surrey RCMP have joined the chorus of concerned voices urging students and residents to be careful with cell phones the wake of several recent robberies in Cloverdale and across the city. Young people in particular are being reminded to be extra vigilant with their belongings – and to avoid short cuts. “Simple steps, like trusting your instincts and being aware of your surroundings, will help reduce the risk of being a potential victim,” Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said in a statement last week. Not texting and walking, sticking close to friends, and calling ahead if you’re going to be late are other tips. Small, portable and in-demand, smart phones are extremely attractive for thieves, Paquet added, advising people to avoid using phones on the street, in full view, and to be discreet while doing so. Along with noting the serial number of a smart phone and keeping it in a safe place, Surrey RCMP also suggest considering software that will locate
the phone remotely. Robberies should be reported to the police immediately, along with service providers. The high demand for expensive smart phones is driving people to purchase them online at cheaper prices, resulting in additional robberies of potential buyers and sellers at agreed-upon meeting places. Police suggest if you do make arrangements to meet with a stranger to buy or sell any item to avoid secluded areas and to choose a safe, public place. Over the past few weeks, Surrey Mounties have responded to a number of personal robberies. Two incidents involved students from Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School who were robbed of cell phones, money and a watch while they were walking home from school. In both instances, the thieves were described as men in their 20s who forced students to hand over valuables. One report occurred in Greenaway Park while the other involved students walking in a public laneway near 64 Avenue. No students were physically harmed, but warnings were issued to parents and to neighbouring schools.

Your main headline in the January 24, 2013 Cloverdale Reporter was misleading! It read, “City Ponies up for Schools.”

The City of Surrey did not come up with $5 million for Surrey schools, as the headline implies. The Surrey School Board dug into its emergency fund to come up with the money, to help Surrey schools because the provincial government is too slow! By Jennifer Lang Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Cloverdale campus will soon be home to some much-needed new training equipment for students in the trades. The trades and technology campus has received $733,006 in money from the B.C. Ministry of Advanced Education, it was announced last week. The money will allow the university to upgrade its facilities with more current equipment, enabling students who are on their way to becoming trades professionals to practice their skills, said Henry Reiser, dean, faculty of trades and technology. “The new equipment has been identified by our dedicated faculty who will be able to maximize the benefit in their true-to-life practical exercises,” he said. The list of items includes: a geothermal training system for the plumbing program, a “LabVolt” electromechanical trainer used in electrical training, submerged arc welding equipment and welding robotic simulators for the welding program, scan tools for automotive service technician training, and two items for the millwright program – a hydraulic circuit board and laser alignment equipment. The new equipment will be on campus and ready for students by the end of March. At its trades and technology campus, Kwantlen trains apprentices in automotive mechanical repair, automotive parts, bricklaying, cement mason, industrial engines and equipment parts, industrial warehousing, millwright, welding, upholstery, carpentry and farrier. The Cloverdale campus also offers public safety communications 9-1-1 and drafting programs.

By Sheila Reynolds There’s a saying that goes a little something like this: “There may be snow on the roof, but there’s still fire in the furnace.” Surrey Little Theatre’s latest comedy, says director Rita Price, embodies the phrase. “Regardless of how old you are, the need to be loved and to love never goes,” she says. “This doesn’t change as you get older.” Of course, Bermuda Avenue Triangle, written by Renee Taylor and Joseph Bologna, doesn’t take anything resembling a straight and narrow path to get to that moment of clarity. Instead, it meanders down a trail littered with laughs and nearfarcical scenes as it follows a pair of rather miserable and unfashionable women in their late 60s who are put in an upscale retirement condo in Las Vegas by their career-oriented daughters. Between bouts of complaining and crying, the “old biddies” end up having a run-in with a charming, sweet-talking scoundrel named Johnny Paolucci. He decides

the two are easy prey, and after years of unhappiness, they undergo a re-awakening of sorts and find the lost bounce in their step. “But don’t give away my storyline!” warns Price, afraid to divulge too much about the plot. Bermuda is her 17th show in the director’s chair. And a comedy like the one in which
she’s currently ensnared is her genre of choice. “Life is enough of a drama,” she says. “People just love to sit and laugh. “So often, they are going through their own hurdles … if anything, they want to get away from their problems, they don’t want to see them acted

Long on laughs – and insight
By Jennifer Lang Jim & Shorty, a play set in the margins of urban life, opens up a world of humour and despair in Langley Players latest production. The play, by Canadian actor and writer Alex Poch-Goldin centres around the lives of homeless men, characters who keep a sense of humour amid the despair as they trade stories about doughnuts and smokes, sisters and girlfriends, shelters and welfare. The cast includes Langley’s Mitch Kaputinsky, making his stage debut as Big Tom, Dann Wilhelm – who’s appeared in several Fraser Valley Gilbert and Sullivan Society productions – as Jim, plus Reginald Pillay as Shorty. Pillay is another familiar face from FVGSS. He’s CONTRIBUTED PHOTO also acted in previous shows with Beach Jim & Shorty is a comedy about homelessness.

The show runs Thursdays to Sundays to Feb. 16 at Langley Playhouse, 4307 200 Street in Brookswood. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Thursdays to Saturdays and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15. - Rita Price, director
Kate Major (who plays the other biddie, Fannie) is a common face on local stages. In fact, Price has worked with her five times previously. Peter Cowhig (Johnny), Michael Powell (Rabbi), Lisa Beaulieu (Rita, Fannie’s daughter) are also experienced. But while Terry Ford (who plays Angela, Tess’s daughter) may be recognizable to Surrey theatregoers, Bermuda will allow audiences to see her in a new light – a spotlight, in fact. “She’s done costumes, she’s worked front of house, she’s on the board of directors,” says Price, “but she’s never been on the stage. This is on her bucket list … to finally get on stage.” Price lauds the devotion her small bevy of actors has shown, noting that contrary to popular belief, comedy is actually the more difficult of the genres to act. “With comedies, not only do you have to deliver the lines, you have to pace the lines and you have to have the right body movements to support them.” And with only six weeks of rehearsals under their proverbial belts – not to mention careers and families to balance – the cast has done a tremendous job, the director says. “I’m very proud of them.” To be fair, Price has attached a warning to the show, due to a bit of coarse language and some adult content. It’s not suitable for children, she says. “It is a bit spicy.”

Below four, she says, and it’s often less interesting to watch and doesn’t involve as many people as a community theatre production should. More than eight and the actors simply don’t fit on the small stage. With a cast of six – four men and four women – Bermuda Avenue Triangle is perfect, she says. While some of the faces may be familiar to local theatre crowds, Dr. Laurie Kortschak, who plays one of the “old biddies,” Tess, is new to the SLT stage. While she acted years ago, it’s her first return to the stage in a long while. “So she’s back treading the boards,” says Price.

Globetrotting lensman meets his fans half way By Jennifer Lang For global adventurer and photographer William Jans, there’s something about being a follically challenged, bespectacled, pasty white guy that tends to make you stick out in a crowd. And standing 6-ft., 1-inch tall, there’s really no point trying to blend in when you’re rambling through places like Nepal, where he was more than a foot taller than everyone else. Which is why he says it helps to dress like a local, learn a few phrases (his Swahili version of “I’m not bald, I’m bald and handsome,” came in handy as
a snappy retort in Tanzania) and to keep a positive mental attitude while jumping in with both feet. Social gaffs are a great way to learn about a different culture, he says, and weirdly, make new friends. “They kind of watch the goofy foreigner. If you can roll with it, you can really make great friends,” says Jans, who’s used to being the odd man out. He’s about to set off on his newest adventure – performing his live, one-man travelogue in Surrey for the first time, after wowing audiences in Van-

A provincial review is underway to reassess whether 1,200 drivers caught under B.C.’s tougher impaired driving penalties must still undertake responsible driver programs and use ignition interlocks. The review applies to drivers who were caught and penalized prior to a November 2011 court decision that found part of the original Immediate Roadside Prohibition program was unconstitutional, forcing a revision. According to the Ministry of Justice, the roadside fines and suspensions handed out to those drivers won’t be reversed. The case-by-case review looks at each of the 1,200 drivers’ driving records, including alcohol-related infractions, to determine whether they still require the costly remedial measures. The reassessment comes after a handful of affected drivers sought a judicial review.

The first batch of more than 620,000 monthly statements or invoices are being mailed out to users of the new Port Mann Bridge. Most won’t owe anything yet because they haven’t used up all of the $30 credit for 20 free trips they got for registering by Dec. 1 with the TReO electronic tolling system. Registered customers who haven’t crossed the bridge yet won’t get a statement but can check their account
online at www.treo.ca. About 370,000 statements are going out to registered TReO customers – whose credit cards or bank accounts are automatically debited for tolls after the credit runs out. Another 250,000 invoices are being mailed to unregistered drivers who have used the bridge and were detected by licence plate cameras. Unregistered car drivers will see their tolls jump to $3 in March if they don’t sign up before then. Those registering by Feb. 28 lock in the $1.50 introductory toll on regular vehicles for a full year.

New rail span crosses Langley Bypass Surrey’s largest road project in terms of engineering reaches ‘a bit of a milestone’ at 196 Street last week By Dan Ferguson Two heavy lift construction cranes moved steel beams into place across the Langley Bypass one week ago Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, bringing the biggest municipal project of its kind one step closer to completion. Ken Zondervan, design and construction manager for the City of Surrey, was on hand as the first span of the 196 Street overpass was bolted into place with the assistance of a third, smaller truck-mounted crane. “Today is a bit of a milestone,” Zondervan told Black Press. “This is probably the single largest project that the City of Surrey has undertaken in terms of an engineering project.” Langley Bypass was closed overnight to allow the work to proceed. The 196 Street span is one of three three separate railway overpasses known as the the “combo” project, constructed on 192 Street, 54 Avenue and 196 Street. It includes the opening of what was formerly a right of way into a two-lane connecting road along 196 Street, south of 56 Avenue. The overpasses are being built as part of a larger campaign
to reduce traffic delays along the Roberts Bank rail corridor that handles container and coal trains to and from the Deltaport terminal near Ladner. Currently about 18 trains a day are using the rail corridor. That number is projected to more than double to 38 trains a day, many of them as long as 12,000 feet. The initiative includes improvements to roads and traffic signals as far north as 196 Street and 64 Avenue, including a system of warning signs to advise drivers when a train is approaching a level crossing to give them an opportunity to divert to an overpass. Overall, the combo project is “on or slightly ahead of schedule” said Zondervan. “We’ve had a few delays in the relocation of third party utilities but overall things are progressing well.” The work is being funded by the federal and provincial governments, Port Metro Vancouver, the railways, the City of Surrey, Langley City and Langley Township. The “combo” overpasses are scheduled to open in January of 2014.

operating budget. Each year, the Board works to sustain priority programs and services to support students across the district. As was true in past budget planning cycles, district needs outpace the funds the Board will receive from provincial government grants. This means there are difficult choices to be made in order to achieve the balanced budget required by law and ensure student needs are met in the best way. In coming weeks, the board will meet with employee groups and community stakeholders, including the district parent advisory committee, to share details of the budget challenge and to obtain input. The Big Snip: for the Cloverdale pet and the people who love them
Lorie Chortyk
It’s hip to be snipped! Did you know that in just seven years one unspayed cat and her offspring can produce more than 450,000 cats? For dogs, that number is 4,000 and one unspayed female rabbit and her offspring can produce 95 billion rabbits in that same period! Tragically, many more animals are born in B.C. than there are homes for. The BC SPCA and other animal rescue organizations shelter can find homes for tens of thousands of these unwanted animals each year, but sadly many more are simply abandoned by their guardians and suffer a cruel death from starvation, disease, predation or injury. The BC SPCA has declared February Spay and Neuter Awareness Month and is urging all pet guardians to have their pets sterilized if they haven’t already done so. In addition to saving lives, your pet will live a calmer and happier life. Here are just some of the benefits for your pet: - Neutering generally reduces aggressive behaviours in pets. Neutered dogs are calmer and less likely to bite, attack or get into altercations at the dog park. Neutered cats don’t have the drive to mark and protect their territory
and are less likely to spray or get into cat fights; - Female cats go in and out of heat every three weeks between January and November. In addition to preventing unwanted litters, spaying your cat will reduce her desire to escape to find a mate, spraying or inappropriate elimination, howling and attracting unwanted male cats onto your property; - Spaying or neutering your pet reduces the likelihood of them developing uterine, ovarian and testicular cancers; - Having your pet sterilized also provides an opportunity to have other important health procedures performed, as necessary, such as an identification tattoo or microchip or teeth cleaning. Spaying and neutering is done under a general anesthetic, so your pet won‚‘t be in pain. If cost is a concern for you, check with your local SPCA. The SPCA provides assistance to low-income pet guardians where possible and many communities have low-cost spay/neuter funds administered through the local government. For more information on spaying and neutering your pet visit spca.bc.ca. Lorie Chortyk is the general manager of community relations for the BC SPCA.
We are here to provide the community with anything they are in need of for their pets. We Carry a wide variety of products including Holistic and Raw foods, treats, toys and more.
