Vol. 39, Issue 05

The Honourable Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, stopped in the community of Barriere last Monday to greet area dignitaries and residents at a District luncheon, tour the North Thompson Agriplex, and spend time with area youngsters. Her Honour’s first stop was at the Agriplex, where she noted she is no stranger to the facility, having attended the Provincial Winter Fair with family 4H participants over the past two years, being from a strong ranching background, and still operating Guichon Ranch in the Nicola Valley. “It’s amazing what the North Thompson Fall Fair and your community have done here,” the Lieutenant Governor told Mayor Humphreys, NTFFRA president Jill Hayward, and members of the Agriplex Committee, “It’s not even two years since you first embraced the idea, and look how far you’ve come. You’ve done a wonderful job.” Next stop for the official visit was at the Ridge where the municipality hosted a luncheon for community members to meet Her Honour. Introduced by Simpcw First Nation Chief Rita Matthew, the Lt. Governor spoke to those present about her back-

ground in agriculture, and told the Barriere attendees, “We in agriculture are so grateful that there is still a community that values agriculture. It’s important that our communities remember that first dollar to be made has to be produced by sunshine. Whether hay, or grass, or something else. I tell people I’m harvesting sunshine on my ranch. I use the cows to harvest the grass, and they turn it into a wonderful product for human consumption.” Her Honour spoke about her constitutional role. “I’m here to keep our civil society more civil, and I have a role to inspire and connect British Columbians. Like the folks in this town, who built the Agriplex and present the Fall Fair. The best Fall Fair in a small community in the province. “I get to meet First Nations, look after the constitutional framework, and keep our politicians honest. And during my five year term I hope to get to every corner of the province to see and meet the people of small communities all over. “It’s important to have healthy land and healthy communities; you folks here in Barriere are certainly a healthy community.” The Lt. Governor made note of the Yellowhead 4H members who were in attendance, and who assisted in serving the lunch, saying, “4H is

Speaking to the

students she said, “The environment and its protection is of the greatest importance to everyone. Young people need to take an active part in working toward better protection of it - how we can live responsi-

bly and not waste our resources.” Her Honour also told her audience that they have to be active in their community, take part in what is happening there, and not just complain about the government.

But when the time comes, “go out and vote to do your part”. After the formal presentation, almost all of the students filed past the Lt. Governor, and had the opportunity to shake her hand.

$1.4 million in gas tax money to construct septage facilities in Clearwater and Barriere By Keith McNeill The Times

Chilled robin

STAR/JOURNAL photo: Elli Kohnert

A Barriere resident caught this recent photo of a robin sitting on her garden fence. Poor bird looks like he can hardly wait until warmer days arrive in the valley. Although most robins migrate away from the area to warmer climates during the winter months, some robins do stay in the valley and feed off backyard bird feeders. We wonder if this bird is a year-round resident, or just an unlucky traveller who arrived far too early for temperatures to be on the rise as we move towards spring. Every Thursday we bring you the NEWS and the VIEWS from the Lower North Thompson Valley. The STAR/JOURNAL Keeping valley residents informed!

M.P. Cathy McLeod announced two major grants while in Clearwater on Saturday. The first was for $1.4 million in gas tax money to construct septage management facilities in Clearwater and Barriere. The second was for $92,000 to upgrade the former Dutch Lake School into a community center. “I think this is a really important addition to your communities,” McLeod said of the septage management project. “Kudos to the people who waded through the federal application form.” The two facilities will be used to treat sludge that has been pumped from septic tanks. About 7,300 people in the North Thompson Valley or 90 per cent of the population depend on septic tanks, said McLeod. Until now, contractors have hauled the sludge for disposal at pits at the Clearwater and Barriere landfills. Those landfills are closing, however, and a new method of disposal needed to be found. The alternative would have been to haul the septic sludge to Heffley Creek. Clearwater’s septage management facility will be located near the present sewage lagoons, said Mayor John Harwood. Canfor has agreed to provide land for a new road into the facility so trucks won’t need to go by residences to get to it. The Barriere site is located just south of Gilbert Smith Forest Products mill. Both the Clearwater and Bar-

The facilities will help make the North Thompson Valley a better place for families to live, grow and work, said TNRD board chair Randy Murray. The Clearwater facility will mean a long haul for septic tank sludge from the Blue River area, said Thompson Headwaters (Area B) director Willow MacDonald. However, it will be much shorter than hauling to Heffley Creek. “I’m thankful that we were involved in the discussions,” she said. M.P. McLeod said she has been involved in discussions to upgrade Dutch Lake School for several years. Several funding sources were explored before the successful application to the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund produced the

$92,000 announced on Saturday. School District 73 has agreed to lease the former school for 25 years (in five-year blocks) at $1 per year, said Mayor John Harwood. Plans include handicap access and bathrooms, rooms for seniors, free space for non-profits to meet, as well as art and theater to make use of the stage in the gym. The former school will be a hub for the local transit system. The money from the federal government will augment $50,000 from Wells Gray Community Forest for the project. District of Clearwater plans to move its offices from the Flats to the Dutch Lake School. It will, however, keep the maintenance yard in its present location. About half the former school will be used by the District while the other half will be used by Yellow Community Services. It appears that possibly the Community Resource Center, now managed by YCS, will move from its present location next to Raft River Elementary to Dutch Lake. The mayor praised YCS executive director Jack Keough for his cooperation on the project. “We are very happy that this has come to fruition,” said S.D. 73 vice-chair Kathleen Karpuk. “We’re absolutely delighted to see the school back in use again.” Other dignitaries present for Saturday’s announcement included Barriere Mayor Bill Humphreys, Wells Gray Country director Tim Pennell. Lower North Thompson director Bill Kershaw, and TNRD chief administrative officer Sukh Gill.

MP reminds first-time home buyers of tax credit Cathy McLeod, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue would like to remind everyone buying their first home to take advantage of the FirstTime Home Buyers’ Tax Credit which helps make the transition into home ownership more affordable. “First-time home buyers can face additional expenses such as legal fees, land transfer taxes, and other costs involved in buying a family home. To help make this dream a reality, our Government created

MP’s Report

Cathy McLeod the First-Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit to support families as they make the leap into home ownership,” said McLeod. “If you or your spouse or commonlaw partner bought your first home this year, you can claim an

amount of $5,000 on your income tax and benefit return. The amount only applies if you did not live in another home owned by you or your spouse or common-law partner in the year of acquisition or in any of the four preceding years,” stated McLeod. “Equally important, if you or a person related to you is eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, you can claim the credit even if you are not a first-time home buyer as long as you are purchasing a house that is more accessible

or better suited to the needs of the person with a disability,” said McLeod. In its first two years alone, more than 550,000 Canadians claimed the FirstTime Home Buyers’ Tax Credit, which resulted in over $2.5 billion claimed. For more information about how this credit may apply to you and to find out about other credits and deductions for homeowners, I encourage you to visit the Canada Revenue Agency’s www.cra. gc.ca/myhome.

Digital detective helps police track down thieves Kamloops This Week When a Surrey man vacationing in Sun Peaks became the victim of a thief, he became a digital detective, scouring the web in an effort that led to the return of his $7,000 snowmobile and the arrest of two people believed to have stolen it. Kamloops Rural RCMP say the man was on holidays at the ski resort 45 minutes northeast of Kamloops and had enjoyed an afternoon of snowmobiling on Jan. 3. He had left on his trailer another machine, a 2009 Skidoo Summit XP, valued at $7,000. When he returned from his snowmobile outing, the skidoo and trailer he had left

behind were gone. The trailer was found days later on a back road in nearby Louis Creek. The victim decided to check several online sales sites and came across his Summit being sold on kijiji.com for half its value. The owner started an email conversation with the seller and, at the same time, contacted police. He eventually arranged to meet the seller in Nakusp to buy the Summit. The seller said he was a two-hour drive away. Kamloops Rural Mounties, working with their counterparts in the Nakusp and Slocan Valley detachments, went to work, creating a plan to intercept the delivery.

On Wednesday, Jan. 9, officers from the two RCMP Kootenay detachments stopped a Honda CRV with two Kamloops residents inside — a 30-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman. The pair was hauling the stolen Skidoo Summit XP on a trailer that may also have been stolen. The couple claimed they had bought the machine a week earlier in Sun Peaks for 25 per cent of its value, a story that raised the eyebrows of Mounties. Why? Well, it turns out the man driving the Honda that was hauling the stolen Skidoo is the same man who, a week earlier, had tried to sell skis stolen from Sun Peaks in

late December. The owner of the skis told police, who set up a meeting with the man in a parking lot in Kelowna and seized the skis, as well as two laptop computers. The man remains under investigation for that incident and declined to comment on the similarities of his sale of stolen skis via kijiji the week earlier, the sale of a stolen snow machine on the same website and the use of stolen licence plates on his Honda. He is scheduled to appear in provincial court in Nakusp. Police say the man was using an iPhone application to access a different gmail account each time he was selling items on kijiji.

Guest Editorial; by Don McRae, Minister of Education

Students first

This government has announced a proposed new framework to bring about 10 years of labour peace with B.C. teachers. We have a great education system in this province, but wherever I travel in B.C. people tell me that it is time we put students first. The last round of labour negotiations was difficult and prolonged, and as usual students and classrooms were disrupted across our system. This is nothing new in the history of our negotiations. I believe our children deserve better than this. It is time to set this behind us and embark on a more collaborative way of doing things. We are proposing a new framework with bold, new ideas designed to give us a fresh start. It includes a new structured and transparent bargaining process that would draw on professional mediators and conciliators to help resolve impasses. We would seek a relationship with teachers built on transparency, collaboration and openness to new ideas. The proposed framework also includes an Education Policy Council with representatives from government, the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) and school-board trustees to advise government on public education policy priorities, including a proposed new $100-million Priority Education Investment Fund. We are also prepared to index teachers’ compensation on par to their fellow B.C. public-sector colleagues, like nurses, college faculty and government employees. Had we used this model over the past 10 years, teachers’ salaries would have increased by an average of 2.0 per cent, as opposed to the 1.8 per cent average teachers have received. In other words, teachers would be farther ahead today than they were in the last system, without all the heartache that’s gone on with all the labour disruptions that we’ve seen in the last decade. Our proposed framework is the start of a conversation and represents our commitment to long-term stability and a more effective relationship between teachers and government. With a signed ten-year agreement, the government will offer B.C. public school teachers a voice in funding education priorities and an official role in education policy decisions. We are standing on the threshold of a wonderful opportunity for the future of education and we can’t afford to let it pass us by. Teachers and government can use this opportunity to reflect the ideals of cooperation, acceptance and respect for our children. It can be a new relationship that we can all be proud of. Just imagine what this framework would mean for students and families. Imagine an education system where it is normal for a student in Grade 2 today to graduate in 10 years without his or her classroom ever being disrupted by job action. Imagine what this would mean to teachers - to be able to focus on their students in a stable learning environment, and at the same time, have a real voice in their relationship with government. B.C. families deserve an education system without interruptions caused by labour disputes. On behalf of all British Columbians, I believe teachers and government can work together from our shared passion for youth and education and choose to do things in a new way. Together, we can imagine a decade of labour peace - and then achieve it. The STAR/JOURNAL welcomes all letters to the editor. Reader weighs in on local doggie-do issue To the editor; I must be missing something. I have been living in downtown Barriere for eight months, and during all that time I doubt that I’ve seen more than a half dozen dogs wandering at large.

My dog and I frequent Fadear Park a few times a day. I find so few dogs’ deposits in the park that they stand out. Oh, they’re there, but their numbers are so small their mere presence draws comment. Perhaps the prob-

lem is greater in other parts of town. Probably, somewhere out there, a dog barks in the night or (God forbid) chases neighbourhood cats, but overall, dog owners in Barriere deserve applause for their responsible performance.

Surely the doggiedo dilemma is not so extreme as to deserve a half-page of commentary in our newspaper of record. Aren’t there more pressing issues to consider? Ann Piper Barriere

New season for B.C. ‘School Wars’

VICTORIA – Like a bad reality show about a dysfunctional family, B.C. School Wars has lurched to life again for the 2013 election. Coming soon to billboards and buses across the province: staged pictures of sadfaced kids crammed into dirty classrooms by a heartless government. It doesn’t even matter which government. This ritual combat went on through Social Credit and NDP governments too. Premier Christy Clark opened the new season with her promised pitch to restructure bargaining. It suggested splitting up bargaining into traditional wage and benefit talks, and a separate table and fund for classroom size and support. Cast in her familiar role of the sullen, rebellious teenager, BCTF president Susan Lambert staged a news conference to distort and mock the government’s offer. A 10-year deal if we give up bargaining wages and classroom conditions? “Ludicrous.” What’s ludicrous is her characterization of a formula to link teacher pay to nurses,

BC VIEWS BC BRIEFS

with

Tom Fletcher post-secondary faculty and other government workers. Nurses are renowned for getting raises when no one else does, so this should be an opportunity for these powerful unions to coordinate. But the BCTF can’t get along with other unions any more than it can negotiate with any discernible competence. Lambert falsely claimed there was no consultation on the proposal. This reminded me how she low-balled the costs of her union’s demands by hundreds of millions during what passed for negotiations in last year’s strike season. Behind the scenes, the BCTF executive and the school district bargaining agent had just settled on a mutual costing model. What this means is the school districts, which have to make payroll and balance

budgets, have convinced the BCTF to stop misrepresenting costs. I’ll believe that when I see it. Before Education Minister Don McRae had even spoken, BCTF vice-president Glen Hansman was growling his reply on Twitter: See you in court. That message presumably also goes for premier-in-waiting Adrian Dix, unless he replaces the hated B.C. Liberals in May, then quickly kneels before the BCTF and extends the key to the provincial treasury. Two generations of British Columbians have been bullied by this bad drama, since Bill Vander Zalm decided an industrial union bargaining structure was just the ticket for public schools. Students are taught by example, if not by blatant propaganda in classrooms, that all problems are solved by demanding more money from the government. After this conditioning, older students are sometimes pressed into service as union pickets. There’s your Social Justice class, kids. Sorry about those sports teams and field trips, but we need those as bargaining chips to get more paid

leave time. To state the obvious, Clark and McRae staged this as a pre-election event to frame the issue. They knew their effort would be greeted as a declaration of war. The main reason the BCTF agreed to a contract extension with a wage freeze last year? It wasn’t the blindingly obvious fact that every other public sector union had already taken two zeroes. It was strictly tactics. The delay sets up the latest rematch of these old warriors in the spring election. The plan is to get the dreaded B.C. Liberals out and then start working over the weaker, more uniondependent NDP. That’s who caved in earlier and gave the BCTF broad control over staffing levels, the proverbial key to the treasury. Along with basic math and economics, a point the BCTF seems unable to grasp is that its strategy is self-defeating. Those sad kids are making more and more parents seek a better deal. * Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com

North Thompson Co-Terminus Fire Protection Feasibility Study presented to District of Barriere By Margaret Houben North Thompson Star/Journal The January 21, District of Barriere Council meeting was fairly short, with only a few items of business to be discussed. Council members received the North Thompson Co-Terminus Fire Protec-

tion Feasibility Study, which has now been completed. The study covered the seven fire departments who provide fire protection services for specified areas within the geographic area: Blackpool, Vavenby, Barriere, Clearwater, McLure, Little Fort, and Chu Chua. All the Fire Chiefs have

agreed that implementation of the CoTerminus plan recommendations is a good idea. However, the final decision to proceed will be dependent on the TNRD’s cost benefit analysis which is currently underway. Council members also passed a motion to support application ALR-13-01, to

remove part of Lot 2, DL 55 and 56, KDYD, Plan KAP66586 PID 024-763-845 from the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), while adding the northeasterly corner of the same parcel into the ALR. The next District of Barriere Council meeting will be on February 4, at 7 p.m.

Kamloops awarded 2018 BC Winter Games Kamloops This Week When the B.C. Winter Games open in Kamloops in 2018, there should be a solid contingent of local athletes ready to take part. Carolynn Boomer, general manager of PacificSport, which provides sportdevelopment and performance programs and services, said she’s confident many of the athletes training now will be aiming for the event. During a press conference on Friday, Jan. 25, just outside the McArthur Island Sports and Event Centre, the city was named host of the event by Kamloops-North Thompson Liberal MLA Terry Lake. In the audience were many athletes who took part in the first BC Winter Games, hosted by Kamloops in 1979. Their legacy, Lake said, was the determination that grew in the city to first become known in the province as the place to go for sports events and, later, as the Tournament Capital of Canada. Celebrating that history will be important when the four-day Games begin on Feb. 22, 2018. Boomer said athletes attending a competition like the Games for the first time will be in for some new realities. “It’s very different than a single-

Now, they have to figure out how do you perform at your optimal level in that kind of environment.” The friendships and camaraderie will be one of the lasting memories athletes will take from the Games, Boomer said.

Lake noted 40 B.C. athletes at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games in London had once competed in the BC Winter Games. “When Kamloops hosted the first ever BC Winter Games, it inspired us as a community to take our first steps down the road to becoming Canada’s Tournament Capital,” Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar said. “Since then, our facilities have come a long way and this event will give us

the opportunity to showcase them.” As Canada’s Tournament Capital, Kamloops hosted more than 100 events last year and has played host to numerous high-profile sporting competitions, including the 1993 Canada Summer Games, 2011 Western Canada Summer Games, and two previous BC Games. The 2018 BC Winter Games in Kamloops will see more than 2,100 athletes, coaches, and officials visit from Feb. 22 to Feb. 25. Sport venues include the Tournament Capital Centre (gymnastics), the Thompson Rivers University gym (badminton), McArthur Island Sports Centre (curling, figure skating and speed skating), Interior Savings Centre (hockey and ringette), Memorial Arena (hockey), Sun Peaks (alpine and freestyle skiing and biathlon), Stake Lake Ski Trails (cross-country skiing), South Kamloops secondary (judo and karate), Pacific Way elementary (archery) and NorKam secondary (netball). The cost of hosting the Games is covered by the province, which kicks in $525,000, and the city, which adds a minimum of $45,000 cash and $50,000 in kind. The Games are expected to provide about $2 million in economic impact to the city. Athletes competing will range in age from 10 to 19.

New websites for YCS and WorkBC

Submitted

Yellowhead Community Services (YCS) and WorkBC Employment Services in the North Thompson are ringing in the New Year with newly redesigned websites. According to YCS Financial Administrator, Jackie Enfield, “The YCS website needed to be refreshed with a more modern design and functionality.” YCS has recently taken on the role of Contract Service Provider for WorkBC Employment Services in the North Thompson. It was therefore also timely to refresh the websites for Clearwater and Barriere Employment Services, who deliver WorkBC Services in our valley. The YCS and WorkBC websites share a similar design to inform end users that the organizations are related.

The Yellowhead Community Services website (www.yellowheadcs.ca) highlights all of the programs and services offered through YCS, including the services offered through the Community Resource Centre, which is now under the management of YCS. Additionally, visitors can find information regarding upcoming YCS events, latest news, volunteer and employment opportunities, Annual General Meetings, and more. There is a photo gallery that compliments the site’s colourful new design, which is full of photos showcasing many of our local citizens and landscapes. In addition to a dedicated web page, funding partners are highlighted through rotating logos on the homepage. The greater visual prominence expresses

Yellowhead Community Service’s gratitude for the ongoing financial assistance which allows YCS to develop and provide a large variety of services and supports for residents of the North Thompson Valley. The WorkBC website is a joint website for both Clearwater and Barriere Employment Services. The website can be accessed though each centre’s domain (www.clearwateremployment.ca or www. barriere-employment. ca), but these will take you to a single site for both organizations. The WorkBC website offers a single site for employers and job-seekers within the North Thompson, and has been laid out to be easy to navigate. Employers can begin the process to “Post a Job” with the click of a single button on the homepage.

Dog Obedience Classes start in February! Learn to teach your dog basic good manners and acceptable behaviour in all situations. Six week courses start on Sunday • Feb. 17 • 11 a.m. at Barriere fall fair hall. For dogs 6 months & up Cost $100 • Call Jill 250-319-8023 to register

If you are looking for work, you can s t r a i g h t fo r w a r d l y “Find a Job” in the job postings section, which indicates whether jobs are posted in Barriere, Clearwater, or both. The new WorkBC website offers everything employers and job seekers throughout the valley need in one central location. Additionally, the WorkBC website highlights services offered, upcoming events and workshops, funding information, work search sites, and local training opportunities. Public input regarding both websites is appreciated to make these tools better for the members of our communities. Feedback can be emailed to info@yellowheadcs.ca. YCS and WorkBC hope you enjoy exploring their new websites.

CSS basketball players save Follow me; learn to ski Barriere man from choking By Keith McNeill The Times Two Clearwater Secondary School Senior Boys basketball players and their coach probably saved the life of a Barriere school-bus driver last Thursday evening. “They’re heroes, as far as I’m concerned, said Jack Kelley. “They saved my life. I think they should get nominated for something.” According to Kelley, the incident occurred at a Wendy’s in Kamloops after he had taken the Barriere Junior Girls basketball team to a game. He was just enjoying a bite to eat with the team when he started to choke. “I tried to cough it back up but it wouldn’t come,” he said. “I was pretty scared. The Barriere coach tried to help me but wasn’t able to do much. I saw the Clearwater coach coming over. He asked, ‘Do you need help?’ I nodded yes. Then I blacked out. That was it.” Kelley missed most of the excitement, according to Clearwater coach Geoff Giesbrecht. He was trying to lift him up to perform a Heimlich maneuver on him from behind when he went unconscious. Giesbrecht partially tore the muscles in one bicep when that happened and so was unable to do much more. However, two of his players, Jairus Bromley and Brock Vandamme, came over and offered to help. Both had taken First Aid training the year before in Grade 10. They lowered the unconscious man to the floor and began performing chest thrusts on him.

Clearwater Secondary basketball players Jairus Bromley (l) and Brock Vandamme helped save the life of Barriere school-bus driver Jack Kelly, in Kamloops last Thursday evening. “For 16-year-olds to handle that and act so calmly, I was very impressed,” said the coach. He contrasted this with some of the Barriere players, who were just screaming, and with one adult male bystander, who just stood there, doing nothing and then quietly walked away. However, one adult female bystander did help, he said. Unfortunately, Giesbrecht did not get her name. At this point, Kelley was not breathing and had no detectable pulse. “I’ve never seen anyone that blue,” said Giesbrecht. The boys kept giving him chest compressions for what seemed like several minutes. Finally, the unconscious man started wheezing and he spat out the piece of food he had choked on. The ambulance arrived about a minute after the bus

driver started breathing. The attendants checked him out and took him away to hospital. “It was a scary moment,” said Jairus Bromley. “We’re very thankful that Mr. Giesbrecht was there. He guided us through it.” Kelley said he recalls when the ambulance arrived. The driver of the Clearwater bus came over and assured him that he would drive the Barriere students home on his way to Clearwater. The doctors at the hospital checked him out and found nothing wrong. The following day he went back to driving school-bus with just a sore chest to remind him of his misadventure. It was only during the day, when he spoke with people who had been there, that he realized how close had been his brush with death, said Kelley.

Seventy-seven people signed up and took to the streets during the Alzheimer’s/Investors Group Walk for Memories held in Barriere on January 27. All ages of folks were in attendance for the start from the Barriere Senior’s Centre, some brought their dogs along, and the community’s mascot, Barrie the Bear, also turned out to help with the fundraising walk. Cadets carried the flags and led the group, as walkers followed a route that took them past the elementary school, up Barkley, and back down Barriere Town Road to the Senior’s Centre for a light lunch, socializing, a silent auction, a raffle for a laptop and other items, as well as a number of door prizes that were given out. This year’s Walk participants included individuals from many areas of the valley, including a group from Clearwater. The Alzheimer’s/Investors Group Walk for Memories, 2013, was dedicated to Barriere resident Jean Hambrook. The Walk raises awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and raises funds for people in your community who are living with dementia. The Alzheimer Society of B.C. supports current research directed at finding the causes and the cure for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and improving the lives of the more than 70,000 individuals and families in our province who are living with the disease.

Community 2 Community Forum held in Barriere There was another Community 2 Community Forum (C2C) on January 23. The last C2C meeting was in February of 2012 and was held in Clearwater. This time it was held here in Barriere. There were elected representatives and staff from the District of Clearwater, Simpcw First Nation and the Thompson Nicola Regional District. We gathered to discuss matters of mutual concern and to hear presentations from various groups that involve all communities. Randy Murray, Chair of the TNRD, gave a presentation that outlined the strategic priorities of the TNRD for 2013. Once again one of those priorities was solid waste management. Peter Hughes, TNRD Director of Environmental Services, then gave an update on the plans for the various landfill and transfer stations in our area. Ted Richardson, Susan Garland and Elizabeth Elston, from the North Thompson Food Action group, gave a presentation on improving food security and sustainability in the North Thompson. They hope to build a frame work here in the valley to insure there are adequate local food sources. Jenny Turco and Alexis Blueschke, from the Interior Health Authority, gave a presentation based on the Snakes and Ladders Life Game, that explained ways to balance life setbacks and turn those setbacks into opportunities. To a certain extent, we all experience setbacks and low points in our lives, and the Interior Health team is there to help should anyone need them. Alison Coyne, Regional Corridor Economic Development

liaison from the Ministry of Jobs Tourism and Skills Training, gave a presentation to help gain some direction and focus on our request for a Labour Market Analysis here in the North Thompson. What we are hoping to do is to identify possible labour needs and concerns, to prepare action plans to fill any skills based shortages and gaps that may occur as the various projects planned here in the North Thompson Valley unfold. Chief Rita Matthew gave a report on how Simpcw Council views the recent actions of the “Idle No More” group, and also reported that the Simpcw Council had been rated number two in Canada for their accounting procedures. Considering the number of different First Nations Bands and Councils in Canada, that accomplishment is indeed noteworthy. Councillors Tom Eustache, Tina Donald and Shelly Loring gave a report on various projects that are underway through the Simpcw Council. One project was the recent purchase of land on the Raft River that was the site of traditional fishing and Band gatherings. There are plans

ayor As the M ... sees it with District of Barriere Mayor

Bill Humphreys to develop the land to showcase traditional Simpcw heritage and activities. The meeting was filled with a number of different topics and reports. Despite the cramped timeframe much was said, and by most accounts was well received by those attending. My thanks to all those that took time out of your routines to attend. It is important to discuss certain matters face to face with as many community representatives in attendance as possible, so that we can have the benefit of the cross-pollination of innovative ideas. Speaking of gathering ideas, District staff was out asking residents questions on the condition of our roads. Currently the District does not handle the maintenance of the roadways as it is still controlled by the province. We need to know what is working well, and what needs to be improved, so that we can formulate a future roads plan that suits the needs of the

residents of Barriere. Thanks to those that have given input. On Saturday, January 26, our MP Cathy McLeod was at the Clearwater ski hill to announce “The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) will receive $1.4 million dollars from the Government of Canada through the Gas Tax Fund to construct two septage management facilities in partnership with the districts of Barriere and Clearwater. The project will serve over 7,300 residents located in the North Thompson Valley.” It is important to note that this is a joint application involving all of the communities in the valley. By working together we all benefit from the grant monies. Thanks to the TNRD Board members and staff for making this happen. Grant applications can be difficult. Thanks also to MP Cathy McLeod for her continuing support of all the residents here in the valley.

Yellowhead Pioneer Assisted Living: Comfort, care and safety for seniors By Jill Hayward North Thompson Star/Journal “The community really doesn’t have any idea of how nice the suites are here, and how much room there is,” said Yellowhead Pioneer Assisted Living Facility administrator Pam Simpson, “Each one really is a full size one-bedroom apartment of just over 1,000 square feet.” Simpson was giving a tour to this reporter of the 10 suite assisted living facility that sits in the heart of the Barriere community. She noted that assisted living is basically for seniors who need some assistance but are aware of their own needs. Currently the facility has three empty suites and Simpson says they want to let the community know what is available at the residence for folks who are in need of “a little assistance” with their daily lives. The one bedroom suites are impressively spacious and inviting, with a warm and welcoming design that instantly makes one feel at home. There are plenty of windows that let in the light, and the whole floor plan is set up to help

those who may have mobility limitations, need a cane, walker or wheelchair. For the ladies, or those who may have a lot of personal items, there is a full size walk through wheel chair friendly closet between the bathroom and bedroom. The washroom has oodles of space, with strategic grab bars and a gigantic five foot wide walk in shower. For those who like to soak in a tub, Pam tells that the facility has its own ‘Spa Room’, complete with a special tub that has a removable side door, and the whole tub can be tilted for ease of access. Once staff have the bather comfortable, the lights can be dimmed, soft music played, and a the gentle gurgle of a little waterfall completes the whole spa experience. Pam also notes that each suite receives light housekeeping once a week, with the linens and towels washed by staff. There is an easily accessible laundry room where residents can do their own personal laundry, or they have the option of paying an additional amount to have their personal items washed for them. The laundry room is also the home of the facilities resident feline,

Ginger, who made her first appearance a few years ago, as a tiny kitten on the Labour Day weekend when she was found abandoned in the parking lot at the annual North Thompson Fall Fair. Ginger now has full run of the facility, and stops in to visit any of the residents who welcome her company. An honourary staff member, Ginger distributing purrs, love, greetings and companionship as she makes her daily rounds. Pam shows off the residence’s scooter garage, complete with a powered scooter garage door that opens automatically onto a blacktop pathway, giving easy access to Barriere’s downtown shopping area. Within easy scooter distance just down the road, can be found Fadear Park and the Barriere Bandshell, and both are accessible by a blacktopped pathway. Our next stop was the dining room, where cooks post a daily menu that offers up two delicious choices for lunch and dinner. Pam notes they also serve one snack at approximately 10 a.m. each day that includes fresh fruit, and another snack around 3 p.m. Having attended one or two of the 3 p.m. ‘snacks’ in the past, this reporter can vouch that they greatly resemble an English afternoon tea with a number of delicacies served, along with good conversation. Facility cook Cheryl Cochran says the residents are responsible for making their own breakfast in their suites, but that some residents, especially those who might be late risers, make the 10 a.m. snack their breakfast time. “Just about everything is made from scratch in the kitchen,” says Pam, “And it all follows a dietician approved menu. Our cooks get very creative with the presentation of the food, and utilize garnishes to make each meal appealing to our residents. One of our cooks said, “You eat first with your eyes”. We very much believe that how the food is

Residents can also have a friend or family member join them at meal times, for a nominal cost. Pam knocks on the door on one of the occupied suites, and resident Myrtle Printzhouse, welcomes us into her home. Myrtle says she has been a Barriere resident since she was 13 years of age, and she has now been a resident at the Yellowhead Pioneer Residence Assisted Living Facility for well-

over a year. This reporter appreciated her graciousness in opening her home, and in sharing her experiences at the residence. Asked what her impressions of the facility as a whole are, Myrtle answered, “I think its all good. It’s more than anyone can understand, and it is so well managed. This is just like your own home. Your suite and things are your own, and there is excellent care. It’s just like a family here. I enjoy it so much.” Asked, how’s the food? Myrtle replied, “They think we’re loggers or something! Everything is home cooked,

Yellowhead Pioneer Assisted Living: and is very good.” Myrtle noted that she uses the full kitchen area within her suite to bake and make treats for the other folks who also reside at the facility. “Once a month many of us get together to bake and make goodies, taking turns on who’s home we do it in. Then we share them and put some aside to bring out for when we play bingo,” said Myrtle. Myrtle also said she really enjoys where the residence is situated in the heart of the Barriere downtown area, “It’s close for family so they can visit me, and easy for visitors to stop by when they are shopping or doing business in town. I am not isolated at all!” Pam says the facility offers a number of activities for residents who wish to participate, but she is quick to point out that “No one has to participate. Some of our residents may not want to take part in the activities we offer, and that’s just fine. Everyone can make their own choices here.” However, for those who do wish to participate there is a good choice of ongoing activities they can take part in. Crafts, bingo, or theme weeks - such as High Tea with the Queen, keep everybody entertained and interacting. At the time of this writing the upcoming theme week “Hawaiian Cruise” was being awaited with much anticipation by residents as staff planned theme meals, costumes, and a number of fun surprises for the residents. Many of the residents also enjoy decorating the facility for special days such as Halloween or Christmas. They make a number of the decorations during craft sessions, and in fact they are so good at what they do the Yellowhead Pioneer Residence has been a consistent winner in the North Thompson Fall Fair’s Best Decorated Business competition over the years. Raised garden beds are available outside for tenants that may wish to exercise their green thumbs, and there are a number of walking areas for those who like to get out and about close to

home. The closest being directly outside each suite; where an all season well-maintained blacktopped pathway circles the entire facility, and the staff do their best to keep it snow and ice-free throughout the winter. The facility is next door to the Barriere Medical Centre, and within an easy walk is the Library, and the IDA Shopping Mall with a grocery store, pharmacy, art gallery, real estate agent, stationary supply and bookkeeper. There is also a Credit Union, Post Office, and hardware store within close proximity. We bid Myrtle a cheery goodbye and continue our tour; next stopping in at the office of Catharine Lyons to ask about the people who require assisted living? “Tenant needs to direct their own care. They need to be aware of why they are taking their medication. It’s about being competent in their own care. Things such as if they notice their legs are swelling, they know they need to wear stockings, but it is their choice whether or not they do,” said the assisted living manager, “We do remind residents to take their pills, and we can give assistance with blister packs and ointments. We can also do clinical skills that are transferred to staff by a registered nurse. Or a Home Support nurse can come in and do temporary care.” She notes that staff are present 24 hours per day, and each resident has their own call button with them in case they need assistance. There are three full time staff members, and 11 parttime. To make an application for an assisted living suite, a person must first make application to Interior Health. During the selection process, local Interior Health Home and Community Care case managers meet with each applicant to determine if assisted living is the best option to meet his or her needs. Once short-listed the applicant will have an interview with the Assisted Living Manager at Yellowhead to discuss assisted living philosophies, the person’s wants and needs,

and answer any questions about the residence. Applicants are not “firstcome, first-served”; they are selected on their need for housing, hospitality, personal care, and individual and assisted living suitability. Catharine says the assisted living facility opened in January of 2007, starting off with a waiting list, and during the past six years vacancies have been minimal. “These are really nice, stress-free years for seniors here at the residence,” said Catharine, “This is a really nice place to live where they don’t have to worry about managing their meals, their pills, or being safe at night.” She also notes that the move to Yellowhead can improve the quality of life for a senior. “Even if a resident never leaves the building, they often become more involved in activities here and in the community, but only if they wish to. Some may wish not to participate in activities. Many make new friendships and new connections. Everyone needs to have connections, even if it’s your Home Support worker. We find that for residents who previously found it lonely at home due to difficulty in getting out, or lack of visitors stopping by, that here, in most instances, they receive many more social calls from family and friends. People pop in when they are shopping or doing business in Barriere, They don’t have to make a special trip to see a parent or friend.” Catharine tells of one instance where a resident who was blind, and a poor sleeper, spent a lot of time awake at night. Staff would read a chapter or two from a book to him during the night to help him pass the time. “Our residents can come out of their suites at night and make tea in the kitchen, or watch TV in the dining room, or even cuddle the cat,” said the manager. The facility is governed by a nine member board, the Yellowhead Pioneer Residence Society, that has been in existence since 1976, and is accountable to the community. The Board conducts annual food

service, housekeeping, hospitality, and recreation audits, as well as a Tenants Satisfaction Survey, and there are also Tenant Council meetings. Pam explains that assisted living residents pay 70 per cent of their net income (usually calculated using line 236 on the income tax return, divided by 12 months). For an individual with an net income of $19,000 per year, the monthly rate would be just over $1,100. This includes the suite, two meals and two snacks each day, personal care and assistance, weekly housekeeping and flat laundry (sheets/ towels) and social and recreational activities. The services are subsidized by Interior Health and BC Housing, so the rate for that annual income would be about $37 per day. “We are always working to improve,” said Pam, “We pay attention to how our staff actions actively impact our tenants.” Asked how she likes her job as administrator for the residence, Pam answered, “It’s like working with a family, because staff are so consistent, dedicated and reliable. It is so nice to see how assisted living makes a difference in peoples lives. I love it.!” More information can be obtained about the Yellowhead Pioneer Assisted Living Residence by calling Catharine Lyons or Pam Simpson at 250-672-0019.

NT Agriplex now open for riding two days a week North Thompson Star/Journal For some, open riding in the North Thompson Agriplex has been a long time in coming, but facility managers say the time is actually just right. Part of the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association facility in Barriere, the Agriplex is still in a construction phase. However, NTFFRA reps say the construction on the inside of the arena part of the building is now completed to the point where they feel comfortable in opening the arena for local

horsemen who want to get some riding in during the winter months. At this time the arena will be open each week for riding on Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Wednesdays, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Riders must be members in good standing of the NTFFRA (which has an annual membership fee of $5), or the Barriere and District Riding Club. There will be a $10 per rider fee for each day, with monies collected going towards the Agriplex building fund. ...continued on page 19

VALLEY

VOICES

Cold start for a young immigrant The North Thompson winter of 1954 was memorable for bride-to-be North Thompson Star/Journal January 1954 was a bitterly cold night when a new immigrant to Canada stepped off the train in Kamloops. It was dark, and a sharp icy north wind was blowing into the face of Elli Hoehre as she stood on the platform of the train station. She was chilled through, and feeling forlorn and lost in this new country. A country where she only knew one person, her fiancé, who had come to Canada just over a year earlier. But relief and excitement quickly replaced her dark mood when her husband to be, Otto Kohnert, was suddenly beside her, taking young Elli into his arms. Once the greetings and excitement had slowed down, Otto introduced Elli to Johnny Uppenborn, who had driven Otto in from Darfield in the North Thompson Valley, to pick Elli up. Elli says she was “horrified” when the two men told her they were expected to stop in at Dr. and Mrs. Walles’ home in Kamloops before heading to Darfield, as the couple were eager to meet their new nanny from Germany. Elli could only comment in shock, “What, go to the home of my new employer at midnight?” This was a complete breach of good manners in the eyes of the newly landed German girl. But Johnny told her, “Don’t fret, you are in Canada now, we do things a bit different here.” So off they went to the doctor’s home, where Elli had an introductory meeting with Mrs. Walles, which proved slightly complicated due to the fact that Elli could only speak a few words of English. However, much to her relief, the three were soon on the road up the North Thompson where Elli would start her life in Canada with the Uppenborn’s and Otto, as she adjusted to this vast country and a brand new page of her life. The cold was so sharp it could take your breath away that first week in January of ’54. Snow covered everything, including Highway 5, which was just a winding unpaved road back then. As Elli sat between the two men on the way to her new home, she was stunned by the winter landscape she was being transported into, it looked like an endless land of ice and snow. The temperature was hovering around minus -40° degrees Fahrenheit, and the snow was reaching above her knees, but then, she was only 5’2” tall. They arrived at the Uppenborn’s Darfield farm in the wee small hours of the morn-

ing, and it was not long before everyone had settled down to sleep. When Elli awoke and looked out the window, she saw that the moon was still out along the hills across the valley, it was starting to get light outside. Elli wondered where everyone was at 6:00 a.m. in the morning? As she looked out the window Elli saw Gertrude Uppenborn just going into the milking barn carrying a coil lantern. It was still cold outside, really cold; Gertrude’s frozen breath looked like a tiny cloud on her face. Elli opened the front door to call to her, but just as quickly closed it again; the cold seemed to bite at her face as soon as it touched her. Once the milking had been completed, and all the other chores done in the barn, it was time for the people to have breakfast. Johnny was the cook that morning, and Elli, being a city person, was amazed how quickly everything was prepared on the kitchen’s wood stove. There was no electricity in the North Thompson Valley back in 1954, but the wood stove kept the room cozy and comfortable as everyone gathered around the big table for Elli’s first breakfast in Canada. However, once the meal was completed Elli was told there were more outdoor chores to take care of. Johnny thought it was a good idea to get Elli off to a good start in her new country, minus -40° below or not! She was to go out and feed the beef cows in the field with him, as Otto was already busy looking after fire wood duty that morning. Everyone helped to get Elli so bundled up in warm clothes she could hardly move, and then off they went loading hay bales onto a trailer, which was hitched to a tractor and driven across Highway 5 to a field where the cows were already eagerly waiting. Elli’s job was to cut the strings on a bale, and toss the hay off the trailer to the cows as Johnny slowly drove the tractor along. Throwing hay proved to be a bit much for the new farm girl, so Johnny told her to drive the tractor. Elli was speechless – she had no idea how to do that. “No problem”, said Johnny, “Just sit here and hold the steering wheel still and keep your foot on the gas, but not too hard.” To Elli’s amazement, she managed to drive the big tractor, and everything worked out without incident. But she was glad that Johnny took over when the trailer was empty, and drove them back to the house. Otto was all smiles to find his bride to be

Elli Hoehre’s introduction to the North Thompson Valley in January of 1954, had her feeling a little forlorn with the deep snow and minus -40° temperatures that greeted her on arrival at the Uppenborn Farm in Darfield. If you look closely you can just see the young Elli, she is coming in from doing chores in the dark of early morning, to the much anticipated warmth she will find inside the friendly farmhouse kitchen. had been properly initiated into country life, and told her, with a big smile on his face, “Guess you’ll do okay in Canada”. Now that all the chores had been done, and everyone, both human and livestock had been fed, Elli and Otto were finally able to spend some time together in the warm friendly living room of the farm house; then happily caught up on what had been happening in each of their lives after 14 months of separation. The young couple were content to sit together and look out the window at the beautiful snow-covered landscape of a Canadian winter. The warmth of the house, and warmth of their love for each other, gave Elli a feeling of contentment and hap-

piness, as she and Otto celebrated their first day together in a lifelong adventure of living in the North Thompson Valley. Although the beauty of the area was inviting them out for a walk, both agreed it would be prudent to leave that for another time, mostly due to the fact the young German immigrant’s short stature could place her in danger of disappearing into one of the numerous deep snow drifts that Old Man Winter had brought to the valley for the new year of 1954! * Editor’s note: Just over one year later, Elli and Otto became man and wife. They will be celebrating their 58th wedding anniversary in April of this year where they now reside in the North Thompson community of Barriere.

Cold weather photography in the vineyard It’s beginning to be a long, cold winter. Lots of snow, wind, crappy roads, and well, I suppose that’s just winter in British Columbia. I have been getting out with my camera (chasing the light as it were) whenever I can and just having fun photographing as many different subjects as I can. Sometimes, however, I have to remember to make a living. So I packed up my camera and flash when I received an email from the owners of a vineyard I have been photographing since spring, reminding me it was time to get pictures of the seasonal pruning. I have written about my excursions in the winter snow, but for those I could take my time. I would wait for, or follow the sun; and when the weather got too windy or too cold all I had to do was go inside. On this occasion I couldn’t do that. The day was very overcast, flat, and gray. The temperature on the high, flat, plain

along the river wasn’t painfully cold, but even at minus five degrees Celsius the constant wind made fingers and ears uncomfortable quickly. The vineyard workers slogged through sometimes knee deep snow, and were all bundled up against the wind and cold as they pruned the acres of vines. My job was to make pictures that were more than just documents of people working at a local winery. I put on my warm winter boots, several layers of clothes, and my convertible fingerless mitts. My biggest problem wasn’t the weather; my concern was the light, or at least, the lack of it. I didn’t want to be limited to a wide aperture. Limiting my depth of field would put foreground and background out of focus, and I wanted vines and/or people on both sides of my subject to be in focus. To compensate, I increased my ISO to 800, selected 1/250th shutter speed, and tried to keep my aperture at F8 or smaller.

Making Pictures with

John E n ma n For any close shots of the vineyard workers pruning vines I had a flash mounted on a flash bracket attached to my camera. I like that bracket. It positions the flash about 10 inches above my camera so it doesn’t get shadow from my big lens hood like the pop-up flash, and I can easily move the flash off-camera to light subjects from different directions. I didn’t have to worry about the vineyard people being camera shy because by now they are pretty used to me, and most have an easy smile and are happy to discuss their work. They don’t seem to mind me joining into a conversation, and even pose a bit to make my pictures better. That’s my style anyway. I’m not one to hide behind a camera. Whenever I am

involved in an event I change my position a lot, and am never concerned with getting my clothes dirty or wet. I work to keep everyone relaxed, and I quickly lift my camera to make an image, and just as quickly lower it to keep contact with my subject. After the cold, windy hours of photography I hitched a ride on a tractor back to the barn. Those fellows were happy to get out of a long day in the cold snow and wind, returning to their warm homes to relax and pack ice on their sore, right hands. The hours of pruning comes at a cost. For me it was a productive day. And, even though I now have lots of images for my clients I’ll keep an eye on the light for the next week and return to the vineyard hoping to get a few

Make an egg wash w/yolk & 1 tsp of cold water. Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces. Roll each one out on a floured work surface to a length of about 16” & about 7” wide. Crumble a quarter of the feta about an inch evenly over the dough, leaving about an inch feta-free along the lower edge from end to end & about 4” along the top (the feta should be concentrated in a long line from end to end). Brush egg wash lightly all around the exposed edges & roll up the dough around the feta; you should end up with a long thin log. Starting at one end, lightly but firmly roll the length of dough into itself, forming a round spiral, tucking the end underneath. Gently lift the spiral & place it on baking sheet. Repeat w/remaining 3 pieces of dough. Brush each spiral w/ egg wash, & dust w/sesame seeds. Cover baking sheet loosely w/plastic wrap & allow to rise until doubled in size, about 45 mins. New showing at local Gallery starts in February Both of the following artists will be featured during the month of February at the Armour Mountain Art Gallery in the IDA Mall in Barriere. The community is invited to stop in and meet the two artists during a ‘meet and greet’ on Tuesday, Feb. 12, starting at 5 p.m. in the Gallery.

ARTY-FACTS

Marie Downing: “I was one of those kids who was always drawing, always had a pad of paper, and pencil in my hand. Over the years I went from pencil sketching to painting. I tried oils and watercolors and just wasn’t 100 per cent happy with my results, I eventually started painting with India inks, probably due to what I had available on hand - and I was

hooked! Over the last 30 years I have worked in graphic design, but have found time to also use my creative energy painting, and doing leather work making purses, masks and birdhouses.”

grew up in the Interior. I have always had a knack for creating new and unique things out of unusual items. I started my journey into design at the age of five, when I discovered the joy of making Barbie outfits out of tube socks and any scrap of fabric I could get my little hands on. I realized

Sherri Humphrey:

“I was born in Ocean Falls, B.C. in the early 70’s, and

I could make unique outfits for myself out of hand-me-downs, often handed to the middle child of five siblings. When I am not in my studio, you can find me tending to my gardens, or just enjoying nature. I started making jewelry as a hobby in 1999 and soon found my niche. I started selling at crafts shows in 2002, and have had a wonderful response to my different and affordable creations. In 2008 my family and I moved to Barriere, B.C., and we have found the community very welcoming. I love working with all types of materials such as gemstones, acrylics, wood, horn, metals and fabrics. I am always finding new and interesting ways to express my creativity.”

Agriplex now open for riding representative on open riding days,” said Hayward, “She will be there to help make open riding days a pleasant experience for everyone.” Hayward also noted that there will be a few rules that must be followed for those wishing to ride in the facility on open riding days. Rules will be clearly posted inside, and each rider will be given a copy of them as well. Rules include: • Riders 18 years old and under must wear a helmet. • No tieing of horses to arena fencing or other areas inside the building

• No lunging or loose horses She notes that while there is so much snow on the ground, all horsemen wishing to use the Agriplex should arrive via the gate on Dunn Lake Road, and unload in the parking lot on that side of the building. “Right now it is just not that easy to access the entry doors for the other side,” said the president, “But once the ice and snow starts to go riders can park in the light horse area of the fairgrounds, and can also lunge their

Area resident Bev Henry says, “I stumbled upon the remains of a wolf kill just off my snowshoe trail last week, so set up my trail cam at the site. Wasn’t much left of the deer by the time I found it, but I did get some shots of a lynx at dusk, lots of coyotes and ravens, and a poor shot of a Golden Eagle.”

horses out there if needed.” She also notes that as the program moves forward the NTFFRA and the BDRC hope to be adding other open riding days in the future, but of course the open riding days may be interrupted if there is an event pre-booked to use the facility. “If that happens, we’ll have the event listed on our website calendar, and Darcey will post it on the rules and regulations board inside the Agriplex so riders will know what’s coming up.

Geneology 101: Look at the photos for information By Margaret Houben North Thompson Star/Journal

Continued from page 12... NTFFRA president Jill Hayward says the association is really happy to finally be able to let local horsemen and horsewomen have the opportunity to enjoy riding inside the facility. “I know for some, it seems to have been a long time in coming, but it was impossible to open the doors when we have had construction going on in so many areas. Even just setting up the arena panels needed to be put on hold until we no longer needed to be moving equipment in and out.” Hayward says NTFFRA Light Horse convenor, Darcey Woods, will be on site for open riding days, and she will be able to answer any questions riders may have. Woods will also be collecting the $10 fee, and getting each rider to sign a liability waiver that will be kept on file so the waiver won’t have to be completed each time a rider returns to use the arena. “Darcey will be our

When researching your family tree, one of the most enjoyable things (at least for me) is when you come across some old photos. Old photos are great, and sometimes can provide a wealth of information about your family. If there are buildings or streets in the background, watch for signs, whether they be street signs or store signs. Even if the pictures aren’t marked as to who is in it or what was happening, those signs will tell you where it was taken, and sometimes when (like if the building in the background burned down in a certain year, you know it was taken before the date it burned down). Watch for distinctive hair styles or clothing styles, they will tell you approximately when the photos were taken, too. It’s also fun find-

ing old negatives, and generally, the larger the negative, the older the picture will likely be. Mind you, getting those old negatives printed can get expensive, as they will likely have to be sent away in order to be processed. There aren’t that many places left that will develop the old negatives, but there are some. Ask your favourite photography store, they’ll be able to tell you who can help you with them. Then, of course, there are sometimes pictures with no people in them, just of places or buildings. Such as the family homestead, the office building or store where someone worked, or a gravesite. One website that is worth a look is w w w. f i n d a g r a v e . com. This site lists many cemeteries from around the world, including Barriere, and anyone can add information to them, including pic-

tures of the tombstones. If you have a relative buried in Barriere, there aren’t any pictures loaded yet, but most of the names are recorded online. Some records will include pictures of the deceased, the cemetery, with info about the individual, and sometimes even a full obit. Once it gets a little warmer outside, and the snow has completely gone away, I may arrange a day for the Barriere Genealogy Group to meet at the Barriere Cemetery, to take pictures of all the stones to update the findagrave website. It would certainly make a change from sitting in front of a computer. The Barriere Genealogy Group meets on the first and third Friday of each month, at 6 p.m at the Barriere Library. Everyone is welcome to come, but the Library only has two computers, so if you have a laptop, bring it.

Stay in tune with your community. The North Thompson STAR/JOURNAL – keeping you connected!
