Grand Forks Fire Rescue recruiting Grand Forks briefs
Grand Forks Fire Chief Dale Heriot is recruiting. The local fire halls could use a few more volunteers to make sure that all calls can be responded to with an appropriate number of men and amount of equipment. “We have a range that we like to operate within and we are a couple of firefighters below that right now,” Heriot said. Omega in Grand Forks to expand Omega Restaurant owners Mike Giannikos and Andrée Harrison want to expand their restaurant. By May, they hope they will be able to serve an additional 32 customers beneath a brand new pergola. Harrison said the expansion will take place on the south side of the building in a spot currently occupied by a concrete patio slab. Part of an ongoing series about local collectibles. A reader wrote this month to ask about a pop bottle labelled “Property of W.H. Jones, Nelson, BC.” Sandra Seminoff said her husband Mike found it years ago while scuba diving below their home at Four Mile on Kootenay Lake. Coincidentally, an identical bottle sold on eBay this month for $20 US. It’s the second to be auctioned online — in July 2009, another sold for $32.50 US. What can we say about them? Just that they came from the Columbia Bottling Works, which was founded in Rossland in 1898, but moved to Nelson around 1934 and operated at 607609 Ward Street. Proprietor William H. Jones lived on High Street and later at 611 Ward Street with wife Edith. What’s more intriguing is whether this W.H. Jones was the same one who came to Nelson from Rossland around 1902 to work as tele-

graph editor on The Miner and later had a commercial printing business that became Leno-Whimster. His wife, Dr. Annie Verth Jones, was a pioneer physician and the first woman elected to public office in Nelson when she took a seat on the school board in 1911. But she immediately butted heads with longtime secretary Dr. E.C. Arthur, and eventually forced his resignation when she was re-elected along with a like-minded ticket. She was then nominated to chair the board, but declined. In the mid-1920s, with Annie’s health failing, the couple

moved to Ontario, where they were originally from. Annie died in early 1933 in Cayuga. Might William have returned to BC, found a job at the bottling works, and remarried? Perhaps, but it’s hard to say. This W.H. Jones showed up in Rossland in 1931 as manager of the Columbia Bottling Works, and held that position until the firm moved to Nelson three years later. In 1946, E.W.
White was listed as the new proprietor of the Columbia Bottling Works, and Jones was no longer in Nelson. Other noteworthy auctions of the last few weeks: • An amethyst bottle from Rossland’s Lion Brewery sold last week for $219.50 US. This company’s story was told in this column last October after a clear example of the bottle sold for $147 US. • A Medalta flour
cup from the Company Store in Trail advertising Ogilvie’s Royal Household Flour sold for $182.50 US. A handful have appeared before, fetching between $150 and $640 US. • A couple of scarce Rossland trade tokens went for very reasonable sums: one from the Windsor Hotel for $24 US and another from the Clifton House for $33 US. the Objects of Significance exhibition, put on by the Rossland Historical Museum and Archive Association offered some tangible history of Rossland and area. The exhibit is noteworthy as each item in the collection was chosen by an organization in
Rossland, each supplying a brief summary of why the object is important to the history of this town and why it was chosen. The exhibit will run until the end of March at the Nelson and District Credit Union Rossland Branch from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
COUGAR HUNTING SEASON CLOSURE This notice is to advise the public the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations has closed the cougar hunting season in the East Kootenay effective at midnight on January 31, 2013. The West Kootenay and Caribou Recovery area (Management Units 4-05 to 4-08, and 4-20) season remains open at this time. The closure is guided by the ministry’s regional cougar management program to reduce the potential for over-harvesting of the cougar population in the area. The closure covers the following Wildlife Management Units: 4-01 to 4-04, 4-21 to 4-26, 4-34 to 4-37, and 4-40. The cougar pursuit-only will remain open until February 28, 2013. For more information contact the ministry’s Kootenay Boundary Region office at 250-489-8540.

Outdoors there were many chances to take part in or watch snow sports. Up at the hill there was a chance to learn how to luge, try out multiple skills in the King of the Mountain race and do a few laps on the night skiing course. Every night there was action with most pubs having live music and DJs. That was on top of the Olaus Ice Palace which also featured music and was open Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Of course, one of the main events took place on Friday with the parade, followed by the official unveiling of the Olaus Jeldness statue downtown. Earlier on Friday, from 2:30 a.m. to 6 a.m., Canada AM shot live footage from downtown, where hundreds of people showed up in the early morning hours to take part and have a chance to be seen on a national TV program.

Nursing students cook for fundraiser
Super finale
sheri regnier West Kootenay Advertiser
Add onions, garlic, tomatos, rice, soaked beans, and stir. Those are a few of the ingredients third year nursing students will serve on Friday, February. 1 at the Trail United Church. The rice and beans event is to raise money for an educational trip to Guatemala coming up for ten Selkirk College and University of Victoria nursing students. The three-week trip is scheduled for the end of April. Students will travel to the community of Sipikapa; free trade zones surrounding Guatemala City; rural highlands; and the remote northeastern jungle of Peten. The future nurses are hoping to learn more about how community development impacts health, said Selkirk student nurse, Caitlin Marynowski. Through first hand experience, I want to learn how we, as nursing students, can empower others to build capacity to achieve optimal health, she added. “I hope to gain an appreciation for societal and political issues that can impact health and health outcomes,” said Marynowski, “and apply this knowledge to my nursing practice here in Canada.” The traditional Central American meal costs ten dollars at the door and will be served from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Cornbread, coleslaw, coffee and dessert are included in the feast. There will be a silent auction and live music by local artist Brian Kalbfleisch. Past experience will be shared for the benefit of all as students who traveled to Guatemala in 2012 will give a presentation about their trip.
Beans and rice will be prepared at the Trail United Church on Friday. Submitted

More Kootenains singled out for Queen’s medal honours nelson staff West Kootenay Advertiser
Seventeen more West Kootenay residents will be presented with Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medals next month for their outstanding contributions to public service. They include award-winning author Rita Moir, Slocan Valley Heritage Trail Society president Rory Lindsay, South Slocan educator Peter Wood, conservation-
ist Lorna Visser, and Hills resident Richard Allin. Moir, a Vallican resident, has worked locally as a journalist and written several books including Survival Gear, Buffalo Jump, The Windshift Line, and The Third Crop. Lindsay, who lives near Slocan City was instrumental in an initiative last year to commemorate the Japanese Canadian internment in the valley.
Rita Moir will receive one of 17 medals. Submitted
Both will receive their medals at a ceremony at the Vallican Whole on Saturday, February 9 at 3 p.m. Wood, a Selkirk College biology instructor for 30 years,
and member of the South Slocan commission of management, will receive his medal the same day at the Anglican Church Hall in South Slocan at 11:30 a.m. Lorna Visser, who in 2009 spearheaded the successful campaign to add a piece of private land known as the Valhalla Mile to Valhalla Provincial Park, will be recognized along with Allin, a longtime executive of the Hills Recreation Society, at

the Hills community hall on February 10 at 2 p.m. “Each of these individuals is exceptionally deserving of this honour,” Slocan Valley regional district director Walter Popoff said in a news release. “It is thrilling to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime event.” Popoff nominated the five through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Twelve Salmo and Ymir residents will
also receive medals on February 9 at 1 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion. They are: Ken Anderson, Phil Berukoff, Art Field, Pat Gould, Henry Huser, Wally Huser, Jane Lyon, Maggie MacDonald, Ian McInnes, Carla Stephenson, Heather Street, and Mary Jean Taylor. “It is such an honour to celebrate the achievements of these wonderful individuals who have made such a positive impact
in our community,” Salmo mayor Ann Henderson said. “This is a terrific opportunity to recognize the tremendous value and work of these exemplary volunteers,” said rural Salmo regional district director Hans Cunningham who last year received a medal himself. They join 45 other recipients from our area to date. The medals mark the 60th year of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.
Enjoy up to $1,850 in price adjustments until January 31.

Fruitvale quilter’s quest leads to ‘trunk show’ in Castlegar jim sinclair WKA Editor
Quilters of all skill levels enjoyed a show on Jan. 24, coinciding with the grand opening at Jean’s Material Things in downtown Castlegar. Artist June Bell was giving what’s known as a “Trunk Show,” a perfect way for fans of the quilting craft to spend a grey Thursday afternoon. Bell had brought along a trunkful of works accumulated
over the past fourplus decades, samples of her favourite creations. Each brought along its own story. Having made quilts since the ‘60s, June had also been involved in weaving, earning her Masters designation along the way. These days it’s the quilting that dominates her attention. “She’s one of the premier quilters,” said host Jean from her Material Things location on Columbia Avenue just south of

ambassador for the craft of quilting, also demonstrating the value of imagination
and persistence. Even with as many years as she has under her belt the visual creator continues to put in five-to six hours a day in her studio, and she loves other people to see it. “What’s the sense of having work if it’s going to be shut up in a drawer?” asked Bell. “When I can share it, I do.” Were it not a labour of love it’s unlikely there’d be as much quilting going on as there is. Bell says the
prices commanded by the works don’t consistently come close to what they’re worth, although she does feel the situation is improving. All the same, she’s happy she doesn’t have to rely on the commercial component. “I have made a few bigger sales,” she related, “but I’m not too interested. I have four sons who love my work… and my grandkids, so if I don’t sell it they’ll get it.”

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week
February 1, 2013
Tip of the Week: The Sun Mercury and Mars in Aquarius indicate communications both carried by and propelling of revolutionary forces. Yet Mars’ shift, which has taken a significant lead in this dynamic, is now over and it will ingress into Pisces on February 1st. Less than an hour later, Venus will begin her shift in Aquarius. This will synchronize with events that reveal a more diplomatic, humanitarian and civil tone than we have witnessed over the past few months when in mid-November Mars entered Capricorn followed by its tour through Aquarius which began on Christmas day. Whenever a planet transits a sign, Astrologers look to the ‘ruling planet’ of that sign to decipher subthemes and influences. Capricorn’s ruler is Saturn which has been in Scorpio since October 5, 2012 and will be until September 17, 2015. Saturn in Scorpio is a very provocative, sexual and yet potentially ruthless placement. The Sandy Hook massacre and the gang rape leading to murder incident in India are two prime examples. When Mars entered Uranus ruled Aquarius the Idle No More movement began to stir. Uranus in Aries (2011-2019) is a potent pioneering and revolutionary indicator. While Mars was in Aquarius and Uranus in Aries – each in the other’s ruling sign, revolution surfaced. Meanwhile, Pluto in Capricorn (2008-2023) continues to purge and purify especially at high levels of power, authority and influence. Pluto’s core function here is to activate accountability and higher levels of integrity. Mars entering Pisces and Venus entering Aquarius just 53 minutes apart will produce more outer calm, grace and diplomatic politics with the revolution going underground, or under water, with Mars in Neptune’s realm. Yet, when Mars then Venus enter Aries beginning in mid-March, the sounds of beating drums will overtake the bleeding hearts that Pisces often produces.

Your sense of individuality is shining brightly. This is helping you to attract and meet new friends. Yet, you may feel divided. You want to make new connections, yet you also want it on your own terms. You are not interested in settling in any way. In some respects, you feel the urge to run away. But doing so is not so easy; the openings are just not there...yet.
You are getting all the attention you want and deserve and more. Whether you want it all is another consideration. Yet, this time does offer some golden opportunities to ask for favours and/or earned rewards from others in key positions. Success now, however, depends on whether you can win the hearts of others. Making good use of the right tools is the other angle.
A growing urge to take new initiatives is a current theme. Clearing the way for this to happen has been necessary. You want to have a healthy start and you have been focused to this end. But now you are in the mood to play and/or at least to enjoy some cultural stimulation. The time is right to cruise for a while, to ease the pace. Maintain your focus yet enjoy the ride.
You are in an innovative mood. Tapping into your reserve of talents is highlighted. Yet you are also open to accessing the genius, creative gifts and resources of others. Your ambitions are on the rise but you are determined to work smarter than harder. This is where hiring enlisting the support of others enters the picture.
You are in the mood to get out and meet the people. The timing may be a bit tricky, however, as you are straddling between what once was and what will be. Yet, others are calling you out, challenging you to rise to the occasion. You are willing as long as you can be convinced that it is for your higher good. Make that your stipulation.
You are in the mood to make some deliberate changes in your usual routine. The overall quality of your entire lifestyle may be in question. You have been keen to do what it takes. In some respects this has pushed you to get to the bottom of things, to clear clutter, get organized and make some core repairs. Others have taken notice and they are pushing you to persevere.

You are in the mood to play. This is causing you to make some changes on relationships fronts, or at least significant others are motivating you. Yet your energy levels of state of health may be a barrier. The power of belief and faith are among your best allies now. Yet, herbal medicine and endeavors to boost your immune system in general will help a lot.
A lot is shaking within and on the home front. With each new day you feel the urge to explore new territory. This may be literal, as in geography, or it may be creative or intellectual territory that you have never been exposed to that attracts you. What is clear is that you want to make a break with the past.
Your curiosity levels are rising. Dreams of what might be are entering your mind. New and more satisfying relationships rhythms are featured. You want more stimulation, social interaction and variety. The time has come to visit new places and see new faces. Yet some important changes close to home may have to happen first. These may include attitude adjustments.
You are feeling the urge to make some real power moves. This includes breaking free from old barriers and/or cutting ties that bind. On the flip side, forging new alliances with people of influence and affluence is extra appealing. If you can achieve both, make clean breaks and play for higher stakes, you could well be in promising new territory soon.
A pioneering mood continues. This includes new perceptions as much as new places. Your desires, values and priorities are changing. You may not feel so sure where you fit or belong anymore. Deciphering your best place, position or approach is on your mind. A steep and possibly intimidating learning curve is implied.
Yours is the sign of the dreamer and the mystic, the one that lives in the world but is not of this material dimension, at least not entirely. The time has come to assert yourself. Will you move towards or away from your dreams and ideals? Moving away suggests denial and escapism. Moving towards means you are ready to take deliberate steps.

As part of the celebration, five words were chosen to be the favourite words from the community. The public submitted personal favourite words and gave reasons for their choices. The winners were “Jesus” submitted by Sean Simons, “agape” submitted by Evon Bauser, “mittens” submitted by Forrest Miles, “beauty” by Leanne Hammett and “fabulous ‘lello’ (yellow)” by three-yearold Noah Perry Van Moll. Library visitors drew the winning words from a box but if frequency counted, the word “love” would have been number one – four residents submitted it. “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” would have come in second
