Riding 200 km. to conquer cancer COURTENAY — Huge hearts and unparalleled spirit connects the members of the Torry and Sons Plumbing and Heating Team riding to conquer cancer. The Comox Valley group has committed to a team goal of raising $17,500 for the BC Cancer Foundation. Each one of the riding members has been affected by family, a co-worker or close friend who has been stricken with this devastating disease and each are doing what they can to support the fight against cancer. This cycling journey is a 200-kilometre, two-day ride that will be tackled by the team in June. The route will take them from Cloverdale, over the U.S. border, and through northern Washington State before winding up in
Seattle. The Torry and Sons team consists of a cross-section of talent from throughout the company, including from their Courtenay and Nanaimo divisions: owner Brian Farnham; gas fitter Chris Sykes; tool control Ron Gibson; electrician Chris Gytenbeek; HVAC estimator Warren Hill; marketing manager Wendy Mayers; and the initiator of it all, project manager Jason O’Connell. O’Connell has completed this epic ride twice already. This year, he called on his co-workers to step into the pedals and join him on this amazing journey. Why is O’Connell riding 200 kilometres and personally raising $2,500? “I am riding for my sister Kristina who passed away from
cancer and also my pastor, Brian, who is currently fighting cancer,” O’Connell says. “My sister left behind two beautiful girls and a great husband. I would like to do my part in making sure no one else has to go through this. I would like to see this disease come to an end and I hope that by raising this money it will help move forward in making this happen.” The team is seeking support in donations from friends, family, colleagues and the community to reach their ambitious goal. The funds raised go to the BC Cancer Foundation for research and programs to help fight all types of cancer. To join the heart and spirit of the Torry and Sons Team in their effort to Conquer Cancer — a donation

Glaucoma, which can strike at any age without warning, is one of the leading causes of blindness in Canada. Usually caused by an elevation of pressure within the eye, glaucoma can damage the optic nerve and lead to permanent loss of peripheral vision. Symptoms: The most common form of glaucoma usually presents no symptoms until significant peripheral vision is lost, earning glaucoma the nickname “the silent thief of sight.”

If a close friend told you she has dementia, would you avoid her for fear of being embarrassed by what she might say or do? If you answered “yes,” you’re not alone. According to a recent poll by Alzheimer’s Disease International, 40 per cent of people with dementia reported they had been avoided or treated differently after diagnosis. It’s no surprise, then, that one in four respondents cited stigma as a reason to conceal their diagnosis,
says Jane Hope, the Campbell River support and education coordinator for the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. That’s why the Society has chosen “See me, not my disease. Let’s talk about dementia” as the theme of the annual Alzheimer Awareness Month, which runs through January nationally. The goal is to address myths about the disease, shift attitudes and make it easier to talk about dementia, says Hope. “Stereotypes and
misinformation are what prevent people with dementia from getting the help they need and stop others from taking the disease seriously.” For example, Alzheimer’s disease is more than having the occasional “senior moment” or losing your keys. It is a progressive degenerative brain disorder that affects each person differently. Sadly, it is fatal and there is no cure. “Although one in three Canadians know someone with

dementia, it is not discussed as openly as other chronic illnesses, so the prevalence is there but the conversation isn’t yet and that’s what we hope to address,” explains Hope. Today, 747,000 Canadians have dementia, 70,000 whom are British Columbians. While dementia can affect people as young as 40 years of age, the risk doubles every five years after 65. The number of Canadians with dementia is expected

Help to dispel inaccurate information to change society’s attitudes and opinions towards people with the disease. ● Stop making jokes about Alzheimer’s which trivialize the condition. ”We don’t tolerate racial jokes, yet dementia-related jokes are common.” ● Maintain relationships with people with dementia at home, in the community or at work, especially as the disease progresses. Bone up on your joint diseases Campbell River to explore the prophecies of revelation in new Bible study series Osteoarthritis is a disease that affects the joints in the body. Although it can affect any joint, it is most common in the hips, knees, spine, and feet. It is caused by the breakdown of cartilage, which is the tough rubbery material that covers the joint surfaces of all of the bones in the body. In healthy joints, the cartilage acts as a shock absorber against any weight or impact that is put through the joint. When a joint develops osteoarthritis the cartilage becomes rough and thin. The thinning of the cartilage increases the friction in the joint and can cause an increase in the growth of the underlying bone resulting in the formation of bone spurs. If the arthritis continues to progress, the cartilage can wear away entirely leaving bone to rub on bone. Damage due to osteoarthritis progresses slowly over time and may result in several problems. You may have pain, especially when moving a joint. Sometimes, you may hear a grating sound when the roughened cartilage on the surface of the bones rubs together. Interest in prophecy has recently captured the attention of North America, and in the last decade, the topic has graced the covers of TIME and Newsweek. Many are wondering if the recent political and economic upheaval is a sign of the end. In the midst of all this confusion, many people are turning to the Bible for answers. It is for this reason that, beginning Feb. 15, It Is Written Television will be presenting a special DVD series about the book of Revelation called Revelation Today, featuring John Bradshaw director and speaker for It Is Written Television. Over the course of this free, media event,
Bradshaw will open the Bible to explore Revelation chapter by chapter. In a world where many people are terrified of what the future holds, Bradshaw has found that Revelation actually contains a message of peace and hope for the future. He also will show that the Bible itself holds the keys to revealing the signs of Revelation, and that by studying other parts of this Holy Book, one can find answers to what will happen in the final days of Earth’s history. “The book of Revelation is possibly the most misunderstood and confusing book in the Bible, when in fact it is the revelation of Jesus Christ,” said Bradshaw. “During this series, Bible subjects
typically shrouded in confusion will be made clear as we learn how the messages in this book apply to our lives today.” Revelation Today begins Friday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. in the Sportsplex located at 1800 Alder St. South Room 1 in Campbell River. You may register to attend on-site during this free event, or by calling 250-9232383.

Celebrate BC’s first Family Day Monday Feb 11
Eat together Family Day is the ideal tim time to bring your family ‘back to the table’. Given the inc increasingly busy schedule of family, eating together has been every member of the fami a casualty of our hectic da days. Whether you’re together in your home, on a minilocal restaurant, there are nuvacation or enjoying a loc benefits to eating together. merous benefits Sharing a table means sharing your day, sharing your undivided attention and sharing conversation. It is a chance to give extra attention to your children and teens. Family meals foster warmth, security and love, as well as a sense of belonging. The way that you act at the table becomes a model for your children. They learn from your appreciation of the meal and your social skills - especially when outside the home. Table manners are social skills and leading by example makes it easier for parents to teach without lecturing. Using family meals as a way to sample new menus can be both fun and a great learning experience. By giving family members input and the opportunity to
choose the menu, it becomes an ideal way to expand their horizons on a wider range of foods and cultures. It also can lead to healthier choices as well as developing an open mind for experiencing new things. A way to get more out of a family meal is to engage the family in menu selection, shopping and preparation. You can begin this at a very young age giving children age-appropriate tasks like stirring ingredients, washing vegetables, tearing lettuce and setting the table. As your children grow they can take on more key responsibilities and the pride that comes with preparing a special family meal. This teaches your children cooking skills, nutrition and appreciation for the effort of meal preparation. It can also provide a great source of accomplishment and sense of self-sufficiency. Plan to make your Family Day special by including all those who make up your family. Pay tribute by making your meal special and so memorable you’ll want to ensure you do it more often.
Explore together There is no better province to explore than British Columbia and no better family bonding experience than sharing the thrill of a new discovery or experience. Day trips can create remarkable family memories. They offer a wonderful way to spend time together and learn more about where you live. The variety of experiences available to families is different in each region of this spectacular province - you might decide to explore close to home or venture to one of the other regions in B.C. over the Family Day weekend. Whether taking SkyTrain, BC Ferries, driving, or hopping a flight, there are many ways to invest in a day of discovery. Travel is just one aspect. To maximize the experience families should involve everyone in the planning. By planning ahead you and your whole family can experience a worthwhile outing and make every aspect fun. Create a list of activities or venues and assign a rough budget for each. Allow family members to weigh in on their preferences and discuss what they would like to see, do or learn at each. You might decide to stay in a hotel and be a tourist in your own hometown. Kids or youth can map out the sites and activities, creating a family agenda including selecting the points of interest, lunch and shopping as well as enjoying the amenities your hotel might offer. It’s the perfect way to free up everyone from everyday tasks and roles. Researching history, attractions, museums, parks
and markets can teach valuable lessons and it helps children to plan within a budget. This way they are part of making important decisions, appreciate both the effort and cost of outings and will be more enthused about an agenda they helped develop. Be sure to capture your family time by taking photos, saving literature or purchasing a memento. This can lead to great family discussions about what each individual enjoyed or learned and starts you planning for future family explorations.

Getting a taste for Japan PORT HARDY— Gyoza? Yaki Soba? Oyaka Don? What’s your favourite Japanese dish? At one time many locals would have confessed that they’d never even tried Japanese food. But times have changed. These days, folks are regularly tantalizing their taste buds by sampling the many dishes served at several North Island eateries. It seems there is nothing like food to spark an interest in another culture. But while eating at a restaurant is great, members of Port Hardy’s Twinning Society have also had the chance to take it to the next level by sampling authentic Japanese cooking as guests in the homes of Port Hardy’s sister city of Numata, Japan. They’ve also joined in with a community picnic where beef was
cooked over outdoor hibachi grills; watched a chef demonstrate sushi-making, then prepared their own; and even sampled a “McSushi at the airport food court. But food is just one part of the cultural travel experience that Twinning Society members have enjoyed on trips to Numata, a town with a population of about 3,600, situated in the northwestern part of Hokkaido Island about 100 kilometres north of Sapporo. The Twinning relationship between Port Hardy and Numata goes back almost 20 years. Every year trips alternate between the communities, with North Islanders traveling to Japan one year and hosting visitors to Port Hardy the next. Planning for the next trip, in August
2013, is under way now, and if you’ve ever thought of visiting Japan, this summer may be just the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. About a dozen people usually participate in each trip, usually a mix of adults plus several high school students (especially those keen to practice the Japanese language skills they’ve been learning at school). A few of the Twinning Society members who were hoping to go to Japan this summer have had to postpone their trip, so there now looks to be spaces for more people to join the group this August. If this sounds interesting to you, a trip with the Twinning Society begins by contacting the group, many of whom have already been to Numata and can answer all your
questions. The best way to do this is to come to the next meeting on Monday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Hall, or by contacting one of the phone numbers below. On a trip, everybody pays for their own plane tickets and there are usually a couple of nights in hotels along the way, but after that the costs are minimal because our Japanese friends welcome you into their homes as home stay guests and make arrangements for sightseeing and cultural outings. A highlight of the visit will be a chance to participate in Numata’s famous “Yotaka Andon Festival, an event featuring huge seven-metre-tall, colourfully lit “andons (Japanese lanterns) that are paraded through the town streets accompanied by

Twenty-five years of Bowl for Breath
The 25th annual Bowl for Breath takes place Feb. 9-10, at the Campbell River Bowling Centre. The event helps to raise funds and promote the awareness of cystic fibrosis. More than $200,000 has been raised for Cystic Fibrosis Canada through the Bowl for Breath. There have been tremendous developments to improve the quality of life for people with cystic fibrosis. Unfortunately, a cure for this devastating, inherited disease still has not been found. Cystic fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian
children and young adults. Cystic fibrosis causes a build-up of thick mucus in the lungs leading to severe respiratory problems. Meanwhile, mucus and protein build-up in the digestive tract results in extreme difficulty in digesting and absorbing adequate nutrients from food. Elementary and secondary students can participate in the Bowl for Breath. There are several shifts to choose from and each participant bowls two game. Students can collect pledges or make a minimum $10 donation to cystic fibrosis. Adults are able to

Students prepare for journey of a life A group of 12 Campbell River Christian School (CRCS) students are raising money for a mission to Uganda that their viceprincipal says will be a life changing experience. The 12 students – along with four school leaders including Vice-Principal Peter Terpstra and local pediatric plastic surgeon Dr. Robin Evans – will spend 16 days in July working at the Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, a facility that is chronically overcrowded and underfunded and where the struggling staff serves an impoverished rural population that cannot afford even basic health care.
Terpstra says: “We will be going there to assist in the hospital where we are needed. These students will be encountering tough conditions, stuff they have never seen. They will be totally changed.” Grade 12 student Oksanna KindyOlesen, 17, says it will be her first visit to Africa. “I’m expecting to find conditions I’ve never experience. I’m preparing to find conditions I will have difficulty getting used to. I am preparing for something I will probably never fully recover from.” The CRCS team will be working with Dr. Sister Mary Margaret Ajiko at the hospital to provide humanitarian aid and assist with projects
around the hospital and grounds. The hospital is the main government referral facility for the mid-eastern region of Uganda. It has 274 beds to serve approximately one million people in the city of Soroti and the surrounding rural area. The picture Sister Mary Margaret paints of the conditions is not a pretty one: “Picture if you will an operating theatre with cracks in the floor and leaks in the ceiling; single beds with many patients crowded in them with no bed linens; mothers delivering babies on the floor; premature babies with no chance of survival due to lack of incubators; patients wheeled into surgery
Members of the Uganda Team at the Campbell River Christian School hand out goodies at their school’s Christmas market. The team of 12 students heading to Uganda includes (from the left) Heather Belanger, Josie Corrado, Jaden Welsh and Brielle Kelly. Photo by Brian Kieran with their plastic bag of rubber gloves, sutures and medicines they have purchased locally because the hospital has limited supplies; a virtually useless X-ray machine due to lack of film; sutures cut into small strips to use as many
times as possible.” CRCS Education Assistant Jessica Kelly, who is also going on the mission, says the process of preparing the students for the terrible conditions they will see has already begun. “We have a variety of
