Metro wants port banned from using ALR land By Jeff Nagel Metro Vancouver will ask the federal government to ban the port from encroaching on agricultural land as it seeks to amass more industrial land for port-related expansion. It’s the latest volley to be fired in a running battle between regional politicians and Port Metro Vancouver over preservation of scarce farmland. The resolution approved by Metro’s regional planning committee Feb. 1 calls on federal Transportation Minister Denis Lebel to direct the port, which is drawing up its own land-use plan, not to allow non-agricultural uses on port-controlled properties in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). As a federal Crown corporation, it’s widely believed the port could – if push came to shove – supercede both the Agricultural

Issue could be settled in court From page one

Richmond has already warned it may take Port Metro Vancouver to court to settle the issue, he added. “If we won, fine,” Steves said. “If we lost, I think it would be such a major public issue that the public would want to know why these authorities have such powers.” Duncan Wilson, Port Metro Vancouver vice-president for corporate social responsibility,

said the port understands the concerns of local cities and also wants to protect farmland. “We’re not looking to develop the agricultural land, what we’re looking to do is create more industrial land to take pressure off agricultural land,” he said. Wilson said the port is working with Metro and others to foster the protection and enhancement of industrial land, which has also been steadily converted to other more lucrative purposes.

Encouraging industry to densify and make more efficient use of the land it’s on is one strategy. “The industrial land that’s left in the Lower Mainland is insufficient for the future of our economy,” he said. Wilson said the farmland the port has already bought is a longterm “emergency relief valve” it hopes won’t need to be used. “Our strong preference is to develop on non-agricultural land.”

Has the province added up the true expense of Family Day? Open letter to Premier Christy Clark, Michael de Jong, Minister of Finance, Stephanie Cadiuex, Minister of Children and Family Services; I was not pleased when this holiday was first announced but kind of put it out of my mind, however with the day now approaching I must ask a tough question. What is the cost? In these tough economic times and as this huge expense will hit my pocket personally I felt I had to write. I don’t believe at the time of the announcement there was any costing done. Now somebody must pay the piper. Are any of you prepared to provide the information required to properly evaluate what this holiday will cost the provincial economy and non government employed taxpayers. I believe the following expenses must be included: 1. The direct cost to the tax-

Adams Road leads the way A keynote address, guest speakers and breakout sessions were among the items on the agenda at a Grade 7 student leadership conference last week at Adams Road Elementary. The two-day event – entitled The Leader in Me – focused on personal and social responsibility, along with leadership topics for students. Set up in a true conference format, the students heard a keynote address from Dr. Jordan Tinny, Deputy Superintendent of Surrey Schools, and took part in a range of group activities and breakout sessions with presenters that included Adams Road

Topics covered included leadership qualities, community connections, teamwork, stress management, setting goals, and responsible decision making. And of course, no conference would be complete without some downtime – the event concluded with a movie night in the school gym. Student leaders at Adams Road are involved in school activities and events, from monthly assemblies and school-wide team activities, to spirit days, charitable fundraisers and other events.

Shirt with a message

On Anti-Bullying Day later this month, an estimated 10,000 students and others will be wearing a T-shirt bearing the design of a Grade 12 Guildford Park Secondary student named Bea Venzon. Her winning design shows two hands clasped together in the shape of a heart over the slogan, “See something, say something.” A member of her school’s Gay Straight Alliance, Bea is thrilled that her design is part of an initiative like Anti-Bullying Day, being marked on Feb. 27. “Nobody deserves to get bullied for their race, orientation, financial status, disability, gender, religion, perceived subculture or for anything at all,” she says.

Pro-D Day next Friday

Just a reminder that Friday, Feb. 8 is a non-instructional day, meaning schools across the Surrey School District will be closed. The Pro-D day leads into the first-ever Family Day long weekend in B.C., where Jan. 11 has been declared a provincial holiday. Next month, schools close for spring break on March 18, and reopen April 2. To view the Surrey school calendar, visit www.surreyschools.ca/K12Schools/SchoolCalendar/Pages/default.aspx.

Vikings lay seige to museum Living history re-enactors to launch an educational invasion The Vikings are coming to Surrey! On Feb. 16, The Surrey Museum will transform into a medieval Viking encampment for Viking Invasion, the first in a series of monthly Discovery Saturday events. The event is in celebration of the Museum’s new feature exhibition, Vikings, and will include historically outfitted members of the Reik Felag Norse Culture Recreation Society. “Our goal is to produce living history,” said Reik Felag member Linda Woodcock. The non-profit society aims to educate the public, “dispelling some of the myths and stereotypes” surrounding Viking culture and society. “We interact with the public, answering their questions and even letting them try their hand at an ancient craft.” Members of the historical re-enactment group will be busy from 1-4 p.m. participating in traditional Viking activities, such as weaving, spinning, leatherwork, metalwork, spice trading and sword practice. Children will have a chance to try their hand at Viking-themed crafts, while families can watch videos on Viking history. Merchant Gerry Larson of For Vikings Only will bring a selection of Viking-inspired jewellery for viewing. At 1:30 p.m., museum visitors will see a performance by touring dance troupe Poulsbo Leikarringen of Poulsbo, WA, which performs traditional folk dances from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. “We have close to 100 children, ages five to 19, in our Scandinavian folk dance program, making us one of the largest youth folk dance groups in the world,” said group coordinator Ingrid Marlow. “Some dances tell stories, while others are com-

Valentine’s vote By Jennifer Lang “I’ll have what she’s having.” “Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.” Classic lines from some of Hollywood’s greatest love stories. So, what’s the perfect date movie for Valentines Day? The Clova Cinema is turning to its patrons to answer precisely that question. The locally-owned and operated movie theatre is trying to arrange a romantically-inclined line-up for Feb. 14, asking movie-goers to vote for their favourites – from When Harry Met Sally and Romeo & Juliet, to The Notebook and Pretty Woman. Casablanca, with its popular gin joint, is a possibility, too, writes Clova staffer Samantha in the Feb. 1 newsletter. “Basically, the top two movies with the most votes will be played, so we really need your feedback on this,” she says. “If there’s any movies that your’e interested in that I didn’t mention, feel free to put them down.” Patrons were asked to email their suggestions to clovacinema@telus.net, or to visit the Clova’s facebook page, where there were dozens of votes coming in earlier this week. Proceeds from the Valentines Day movie event will go towards the cinema’s digital conversion. The Clova’s 35-mm projectors must be phased out or the theatre will have to close its doors. Over on The Clova’s Facebook page, votes were stacking up for Crazy Stupid Love, Pretty Woman and The Notebook. “The Clova will be full of women and the bar next door will be full of men,” predicted Stephanie Barrett. Annie Hall, A Walk in the Clouds, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind were other suggestions, along with Chocolat, starring Johnny Depp. “Johnny Depp for Valentines Day would be a real treat!” according to Denise Warren. There were several votes for Pretty in Pink, too. True to type, men weighing in voted for non-romantic titles like Expendables 2 and Alien, although kudos to Todd Foxcroft, who had the decency to reveal as he voted: “An American President is my wife’s fav…” he said. – The winners are posted at TheClova.com

posed of many different forms.” Those with a deeper interest in Viking history are encouraged to register for History Speaks: Vikings! (2:30-3:30pm, $5 fee, registration required), where fully outfitted in period clothing, including sword, sea axe and sounding horn, Reik Felag member Jeremy Smith will cover various aspects of Norse mythology and the ways in which they related to daily Viking life. Of particular interest is the discussion around the creation of the world according to Norse canon, and the story of Ragnarok, an epic battle in the future that results in the destruction of many major gods, including Odin and Thor.

– Discovery Saturdays are on the third Saturday of the month from 1-4 p.m. Admission is by donation. The Surrey Museum is located at 17710 56A Ave. For info, call 604592-6956 or visit www.surrey.ca/heritage.

ASK THE DENTIST! Treating Headaches and a Bad Bite Question: For many years now I’ve been suffering from daily headaches. My Family Doctor’s only solution has been pain killers and muscle relaxants! I’ve seen several medical specialists but they have been of little help. I know my bite is off because my jaws ache when I chew and click when I open but, how can my teeth be causing me this constant headache pain?

Answer: 90% of all headaches are muscular in origin and Neuromuscular Dentists focus on the relationship between the TemperoMandibular Joint (TMJ), the muscles, nerves and boney structures of the head and neck and how this system is affected by the patients dental occlusion (“bite”). When jaw joint, muscle and related head and neck problems are associated with a bad bite, Neuromuscular Dentists refer to it as Cranio-Mandibular Dysfunction (“CMD”). Signs and symptoms of CMD include; cluster headaches; migraines; clicking and popping jaw joint sounds; limited opening; deviations on opening; neck or shoulder pain; worn or missing teeth; sore tired jaw muscles; tingling in the thumb and fore-fingers; tinnitus; itchy plugged ears; vertigo; speech and or problems swallowing. Patients suffering from longstanding headaches and TMJ symptoms are usually very skeptical until we complete our examination because NM Dentists employ a zero based medical model whereby CMD symptoms are compared to objective, reproduceable computer derived data. Unlike traditional methods for treating CMD, Neuromuscular Dentists recognize that the muscles of the head and neck must be in a state of Physiologic Rest or relaxation – if the muscles are in a state of chronic contraction the patients bite and jaw-joint relationship cannot be optimized. NM Dentists evaluate muscle strain and activity using EMG leads and relax jaw and neck muscles using ultra low frequency Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation (TENS). This type of analytical diagnostic information is preferable to subjectively quantifying pain and discomfort solely through manual muscle palpation. NMD’s employ digital Joint Sonography and sophisticated realtime computer diagnostics and jaw tracking equipment called “K7” Evaluation system to accurately locate the jaw in a precise position that supports optimal health for the entire body. The K7 system allows a NM Dentist to develop base line data and evaluate tangible im-

provements in clinical outcomes on a predictable and repeatable basis. This objective data can also be readily shared and interpreted by other healthcare professionals. Case Study: 37 year old Caucasian female presented with a 20+year history of chronic migraine type headaches (3-4 weekly) and was being treated at a Headache Clinic in the lower mainland with a combination of Anti-depressants, NSAID’s, Triptans, and Botox but, her migraines were not improving. In late January, 2012, patient received a complete NM workup utilizing K7 equipment, a CT scan of her TM Joints. The result of her zero based clinical exam was a diagnosis of CMD. The patients malocclusion was causing severe muscle spasm in her Temporalis muscles leading to a torqued and retruded mandibular position causing internal derangement of her disco-condylar complex. Treatment involved fabrication, insertion and adjustment (with TENS) of a removable lower NM orthotic to reposition her mandible and allow for disk recapture. Within the first few days of wearing the NM orthotic, the patient’s migraine headaches had reduced in both frequency and intensity. Within 3 months they had almost completely resolved, allowing the patient to successfully titrate off her meds. Physical therapy was implemented throughout this period and all postural manipulations were made while wearing the NM orthotic. Patient is now finishing Invisalign orthodontic therapy and the correction of her malocclusion is nearly completed. Patient remains med free and pain free as confirmed by low EMG rest and adjusted jaw trajectory scans.

Answer: It is no longer acceptable to turn a blind eye to what may have once been considered a rite of passage in attending school. Taunting, exclusion, harassment, intimidation, gossip, cliques- these all too common experiences for children are at the root of bullying. The statistics are shocking. At least 1 in 3 adolescent students in Canada have reported being bullied recently. 47% of Canadian parents report having a child victim of bullying. As educators and parents, we have a responsibility to introduce strategies that will help all students come to understand those involved in the bully triangle; the bully, the bullied and the bystander. This involves helping children understand what bullying is, what different forms of bullying look like and the roles that children play when an act of bullying takes place. At the heart of the matter; bullying is a relationship problem. To find relationship solutions parent and educators need to find the time and space, in our classrooms and families, to support students in developing empathy, tolerance, care, respect, conflict resolution, and forgiveness. Working together, listening to our children, and holding up the values and behaviours that confront bullying will help ensure bullying is no longer a rite of passage for any child. Jon Mayan (M.Ed.) meters will ultimately be mandatory, Coleman said: “I’m not going to make that decision until I see the results of the next couple of months.” BC Hydro officials also said they’d take more time to work through customer concerns and won’t install meters without permission in households who oppose them. But the controversy ramped up a level last week when South Surrey-White Rock Liberal MLA Gordon Hogg claimed Coleman had agreed smart meter objectors would get a permanent opt-out. “He actually contacted me and apologized,” Coleman said, adding Hogg’s office misinterpreted his position. Reached later, Hogg insisted his office checked with Coleman’s first and that he does not believe he was wrong. NDP energy critic John Horgan accused the Liberals of making a muddled attempt to neutralize the contentious issue ahead of the provincial election. “They want to reduce the amount of frustration they find in communities right across B.C.,” Horgan said. But Hydro officials said those who didn’t take such steps and now have a smart meter won’t be allowed to switch back – no matter how the province ultimately handles the final holdouts. “We can’t remove a smart meter once it has been installed because they are now standard operating equipment like utility poles and power lines,” BC Hydro spokesman Greg Alexis said in an emailed statement. “Also, the old meters are being recycled

and are no longer available.” Hydro officials have so far refused to disclose what proportion of smart meters are required in a given area for the new smart grid to function effectively. More than 1.74 million smart meters have so far been installed province-wide, pointing to a penetration rate of at least 93 per cent, with a combination of holdouts and accepting customers still to go. Horgan said an NDP government would ask the B.C. Utilities Commission to advise on how best to deal with households who refuse the new meters. “What we need now is not government or a political party telling

the public why this is a good or bad idea, but an independent third party.” That’s what the province should have done from the outset, Horgan said, but added B.C.’s Clean Energy Act exempted the smart meter program from regulatory scrutiny. “They’re reaping what they sowed,” he said. “This $1-billion program was jammed through for reasons unknown to me.” Horgan said he expects the BCUC would consider a range of options for holdout households. He said one might be to subsidize the cost of placing a wireless meter at the edge of the property and running a wire to it, potentially allowing the customer to pay their share over the long term through small monthly payments. Horgan said he has no personal concerns about smart meter safety but said the government’s approach of dismissing opponents as “just irrational people doesn’t diminish the anxiety they’re feeling.” Some objectors have also refused to accept smart meters because they believe BC Hydro will eventually implement time-of-use pricing that charges more at peak periods. Coleman previously ruled that out.

Young at heart forever

The play stars Kate Major, Dr. Laurie Kortschak, Terry Ford, Lisa Beaulieu, Peter Cowhig and Michael Powell, and is directed by Rita Price. Bermuda Avenue Triangle, written by Renee Taylor and Joseph Bologna, tells the story of two elderly widows – one Jewish, the other Italian Catholic – who are set up in an upscale Las Vegas retirement condo by their career-oriented daughters. One weeps and the other complains. But all that changes when a charming scoundrel crosses their paths, transforming the grey old ladies into glam-rock golden girls. The show runs Thursdays to Saturdays to Feb. 16 (showtimes at 8 p.m.), with a Sunday matinee Feb. 10. Performances on Feb. 22 and 23 also start at 8 p.m. Warning: some adult content and coarse language. Not suitable for children. Terrific team off to Alberta A promising junior twosome with one-half in Cloverdale had a strong showing over the weekend at the B.C. Mixed Doubles Curling Championships. Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary’s Tyler Tardi, 14, from the Langley Curling Club, along with his partner Dezaray Hawes, 16, of Royal City Curling Club, decided to take on 15 other teams at the North Shore Curling Club. Tyler and Dezaray were the youngest team at this event, the only Juvenile Team (Under 16) and only one of two Junior teams to make the quarter-finals. After beating Ernie Daniels and his daughter Sarah (who was the youngest curler at the event at 13) from the Delta Curling Club, they went on to successfully beat the Kerri Miller/Edward Blumke Team representing the Langley Curling Club. The pair beat some notable opponents, including Neil Houston’s team (Houston is the 1986

Racers return to the Cloverdale Agriplex By Rick Kupchuk The KTM Canadian Arenacross championship concludes where it began, with the final two races of the 12-round series this weekend at the Cloverdale Agriplex. More than 2,000 motocross fans packed the Agriplex for the first weekend of the series Oct. 19-20. The next eight events were staged in Chilliwack, with champions in several categories of indoor motocross racing to be determined Feb. 8-9 in Cloverdale. The series, staged by Future West Promotions Ltd. of Rosedale, B.C., attracts roughly 30 riders for the two Pro class categories, with another 100 riders contesting the amateur categories, which ranged from the 4-6 year-olds on 50cc bikes to the Intermediate and Junior

He has the points lead in both the Pro Open and Pro Lites categories. The GA Checkpoint Yamaha rider hasn’t won a race in the Pro Open category since the second race in Cloverdale, but by placing second in each of the past five races, he has managed

to maintain a 12-point lead over Brock Hoyer of Williams Lake going into the final two races of the season in Cloverdale. Hoyer has earned points in all 10 rounds, never finishing below sixth place and earning a win in round 7 in Chilliwack. Knowles has a 29-point lead over Hoyer in the Pro-Am Lites category. title in the 250 Intermediate class. He was leading the points race until a snowboarding injury sustained over the Christmas break forced him to sit out two races last month. He goes into the weekend tied for second with Skyler Archer, six points back of Kyle Springman. Ladd is also nine points back of points leader Jesse Pettis in the Open Intermediate group, two points ahead of Springman.

Cloverdale’s Ethan Ladd returns to the Agriplex this weekend for the KTM Arenacross finals. Ladd is in a fight for first in both his 250 intermediate and 250 open classes, and has also been racing in the pro classes. He’s coming back from a knee injury but has been working with several sponsors including Gator’s Gym in Cloverdale to ensure he’s in top shape. Ladd works at Lordco and just wrote his last exam. He’s graduating early from Clayton Heights Secondary to focus on his racing.

Walnut Grove residents were warned last week of possible cougar sightings that kept children a local elementary school under lockdown as a precaution. Ecole des Voyageurs at 8736 216 Street in Langley warned residents that the animal was spotted more than once, prompting staff to keep

children inside during lunch, recess and gym class all that week. B.C. Conservation Officer Service spokesman Jack Trudigan told Black Press he hadn’t yet heard from anyone who reported seeing the cougar. He said cougar attacks are rare, and asked anyone with a personal report of a sighting in Walnut Grove to call 1-877-952-7277.

Last weekend I took off for Paris…sort of… courtesy of Boeing-Boeing, the 1960s airline farce crafted by the late French playwright, Marc Camoletti, and directed in Vancouver by David MacKay. Architect Bernard (Jonathon Young) is convinced that, thanks to his Paris flat, three air hostesses, wellspaced flight schedules, and Berthe (Nicola Lipman), a caustic elderly French maid-cumhousekeeper, his life is first class. Contest winners announced Two Cloverdale residents have won tickets to see Friday’s live show at the Clova Cinema, Off the Wall in China – an evening of absurd travel tales by adventurer William Jans – courtesy of the Cloverdale Reporter and Jans himself. Marilyn and Irv Dusik entered an online contest at Jans’ website, www.wrjphoto.com, after following a link from our story posted at www.cloverdalereporter.com (“Globetrotting Lensman Meets His Fans Half Way,” Jan. 31). There’s still time to purchase tickets for the allages Jan. 8 show, his first in the Fraser Valley. His live, multimedia extravaganzas are frequently sellouts, and he was determined to provide a venue that was closer to loyal fans who have been driving into Vancouver to see him. This is Jans’ sixth show, and it features sleeping on the Great Wall, the Crucifixion festival in the Philippines, a thrilling hike and a climb to the perfect

combined with a plethora of inbound and outbound air hostesses. Both men easily handle their roles with wit and panache, but Berthe steals the hearts of the audience. Shuffling in and out, changing photographs and menus to suit the romantic arrivals and departures, she dishes out dollops of less than diplomatic wry dialogue in French accented English. Her body language alone speaks volumes, and contrasts cleverly with the very effective

use of physical comedy dispensed by her boss and his pal. For me, Gretchen, the Lufthansa gal, could have been slightly less strident and Germanic, even though exaggeration was the order of the day. Boeing-Boeing will be parked in Vancouver at the Stanley Industrial Alliance stage until February 24. Whether you see it in Vancouver, or wait until it takes off for the suburbs if the show goes on the road during the year, you’ll chase the winter blahs with good old-fashioned chuckles. The bulky printed airline schedules reminded me of how far we’ve come with today’s

pretty slick on-line check-in, and drastically reduced flying times. As a former air hostess – minus the fiancé in Paris – the pencil skirts, fitted jackets, white gloves and caps brought back many memories. On stage, or off, the airline business is still a lot of fun. This cast demonstrated that classic comic timing never goes out of style. Ticket prices start at $29 including taxes.

So how are your New Year’s resolutions going? Probably about the same as mine. Probably about the same as everyone’s. The problem with resolutions is that they’re pretty much all or nothing: one little slip-up and the resolve aspect is gone. At that point, most of us just pack it in until next New Year’s. Recently I’ve heard about an alternative to the New Year’s resolution. You choose one word to live by for the year. Say you choose the word kindness; even if you have an off day or two, you can wake up the next day and start anew. You’re working at increasing the level of kindness in your daily life, and it’s a process rather than a resolution.
